Red-Legged Grasshopper - Melanoplus femurrubrum
The posts that will be uploaded over the next few weeks will highlight some of the recently overlooked insect orders on this blog. Specifically, the orders of Diptera and (today's subject) Orthoptera.
Today, we get another look at a familiar insect specie who spends its days vaulting itself across grass and diving into plants. Although I've seen individuals throughout the years, I still have let to find one devouring the front yard's plants. On a nature walk, however, I was able to find one individual eating goldenrod flowers. They're otherwise always hopping away at the first sign of trouble. As some of these pictures indicate, they may be attempting a bit of cryptic camouflage. Conifer needles look like a good hiding spot (depending on the colors), but they do not offer much in terms of food. If they're still enough or quick enough, it could be very easy to lose a Grasshopper among the long grasses or beneath a plant's shadows if discovered. In my yard, they may hide but they always return to the open eventually. Summer has only just arrived, so it's too early in my area to search for adults. Generally, I've found Grasshoppers a few weeks after Cicadas make themselves heard, and then the former remain active until the approach of autumn (they are active earlier in more southern regions). That said, the smaller, wingless Melanoplus nymphs might be on the rise soon. They will be shared here as soon as they can be found and photographed between each skittish hop and turn.
Pictures were taken on August 3 and 22, September 5 and October 7, 2021 with a Google Pixel 4.

let's talk: canon events! how'd you get into the dream team? what brought you to dtblr?
ok so it wasn't really an event, i saw people adding dsmp fans to their dni lists and shitting on them on my dash during all of 2020 and 2021, so when my hyperfix on homestuck ended in october2021 i needed a new fandom t get in, and went "if it creates so much hate i want to know what it prompts from in people who love it". I sent a message to a friend that said "i think i'm gonna get into the dsmp" on noevmber 8 and that was it for me
#eras.ask#dtblr especifically it was just a slower ajustment#i was never in twt so it was easy#mwuah anonie

Uranus is an eye
(If you look at it in certain frequencies of light. These images are in radio waves. source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PIA25951-Uranus-NorthPole-Cyclone-October2021.jpg)
I love how your newfound hatred for planets stems from the fact you couldn't tell Neptune and Uranus apart
NO. NOT TRUE. NOT TRUE ACTUALLY.
I don't hate them because I "couldn't tell them apart".
I hate them because they look the fucking same.

Oil Beetle - Meloe campanicollis
It’s Blister Beetle season here in Ontario as we now we roll into autumn and the days begin to cool down. It’s an odd time to reach insect adulthood, but such is the nature of the insect world. Not everyone cooperates on the same timeframe, but that can be advantageous. Specifically, during the summer the larvae of the Meloe genus can take advantage of flying male Bees. They can imitate a female’s pheromones in order to mount a male Bee and hitch a ride to a new location or a food source, usually Bee or Grasshopper eggs depending on the season. After spending all that summer in development and eating insect eggs, these Beetles pupate and emerge as large, low-mobility adults. With reduced wings and large abdomens, getting around can be tricky business. The individuals I found had a long journey ahead of them as some wanted to cross to the other side of a paved road. Though somewhat risky, I did pick up a few sprinting individuals helped them cross the sidewalk without any incidence. I know these Beetles aren’t looked upon too fondly given their blistering potential, but its heartbreaking to see them splatted on the pavement. If you do plan on handling one, I suggest you use a barrier to protect yourself and to reduce agitation of the insect. I’m pleased to showcase these pictures as finally there are some nice captures, mostly in focus.
Today, we have a mix of males and females found out and about in the woods, although on my trek I found far more females than males around. Even factoring in those those squished on the pavement (whose antennae could be investigated), the females outnumber from what I could find. You can of course tell the difference by looking at their antennae: males - Pictures 5-7 - have a “c” shaped segment used to grasp the female’s antennae during mating rituals. Males also tend to be a little smaller overall, but size can vary among individuals as can be seen here. Though safety is of the utmost importance here (especially given the strength of cantharidin), it is important to see what behaviors these lumbering, metallic creatures display. When given a finger to investigate, most females approached curiously and begun to probe with their antennae and take small nibbles like the one in Picture 10. When it tried to climb on, I gently pulled back; I’m not that brave without a barrier. Interesting to see that they’re inquisitive and don’t recoil. Always if their body is poked of stroked with a blade of grass or a small stick, they stop and arch their bodies (Pictures 3 and 4). This may be a warning of some sort, so I didn’t push much further. Safety first when it comes to these insects, always!
Pictures were taken on October 20, 2021 with a Google Pixel 4.
