The gay flag, its meaning and history!

(A separate post will be made about the rainbow flag, it's meaning and history!)

This is the modern gay flag. It was created by the Tumblr blog gayflagblog, and Mod Hermy in 2019. Although each color has it’s own meaning, the green and teal combination has a broad meaning of nature. This is in reference to gay men historically being told that their sexuality is un-natural. The blue to indigo hold a broad meaning of how gay men present themselves, not just in terms of sexuality but also as men.

Of course, each color has it's own meaning,

Green: Comunity

Teal: Inclusion

Light Teal: pronoun nonconforming gays

White: GNC, nonbinary, and trans men

Light blue: Ace/aro and split attraction gays

Blue: Love and attration

Indigo: Diversity

On March 5th 2021, Mod Hermy posted a updated on his blog specifying the inclusion of his flag to all gay men not just transphobic gay men. He also posted a alternate version created by gayflagblog shown below.

It's the Achillean flag, the counterpart to the Sapphic flag.

THIS is the Gay Flag:

The "Ocean" Gay flag is the counterpart to the "Sunset" Lesbian Flag.

There are other gay flags like the Cinthean flag.

However, I only ever see people mix up the ocean flag.

You wouldn't call the lesbian flag the wlw flag bc it excludes Bi, Pan etc women. So why do you call the gay flag the mlm flag?

Edit for clarification: I am saying gay & lesbian are their own sexuality and separate from the bi, pan etc community, therefore you shouldn't be using their flags for all wlw and mlm people 👍 especially bc there are separate mlm and wlw flags (Achillean and Sapphic) that include all mlm and wlw labels

Also whilst I'm at it. Reminder that Gay, Achillean, Lesbian & Sapphic are all terms inclusive to the Nonbinary community!

Reblogs are off bc I know ppl will think I'm trying to cause "flag discourse" when I just am trying to keep this educational. I'm not actually mad at you if you used the gay flag and call it mlm. It just is frustrating to see bc its different things. (& I've seen ppl draw canonly bi characters with the gay flag which feels like erasure so I figured I might post this to explain the difference)

OCEAN FLAG CAKE

A multi tiered cake with each of the colours of the 5 stripe version of the ocean flag. This cake is flavoured to taste like the blue curaçao liqueur.

Must be baked as whole cake (you can't bake a single slice of cake)

Optional SCCO baking ingredients, as well as my own blue curaçao and lahara ingredients (food can still be cooked without)

Vegetarian-Safe.

GENDERFLUID TIE DYE CAKE

Here we have a multi tiered cake, it's citrus flavoured and is decorated in yellow and purple sprinkles.

Optional SCCO baking, EA blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and blueberry ingredients (food can still be cooked without)

ABROSEXUAL WATERMELON CAKE

Also fitting well with the flag in question, this cake has been iced to look like the rind of a watermelon. Inside the cake, the tiers all match the colours of the abrosexual flag.

Optional SCCO baking ingredients, icemunmun watermelon, and KingZace wantermelon ingredients (food can still be cooked without)

OMNISEXUAL MARBLE CAKE

Finally the outside of this omnisexual flag cake has a marbled effect in various muted and classy purple shades to match with the colour tones in the flag itself, each of the tiers have been dyed to match the colours of the flag.

I thought I’d share my thoughts on this one, because DEAR LORD, is this a subject…

In my honest opinion, Flag Discourse is completely and utterly stupid, and half of it is just speaking over certain groups. There are real-world issues affecting queer folks that are leagues more important than if xyz flag is “problematic” or whatnot. Yes, there are some legitimately problematic flags, such as the Labrys, but I’m not talking about those. What I’m talking about is stuff like the debacles with the “toothpaste” flag, pan flag, etc.. Speaking of toothpaste, as a lesbian, WE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED TO SPEAK ON THAT. OH MY GOD, were mlm spoken over to the high heavens on that one. (Fun fact: when I called out a bunch of twitter users for speaking over mlm about this discourse, they asked if I was mlm, which THEY WEREN’T EITHER.) In my honest opinion, I would much rather focus on the worsening discrimination against us worldwide than if a gay person’s flag “copies” my own.

Actually, speaking of the tags on my last post, you guys get so violent over online queer discourse and it’s honestly really fucked up.

I’ve seen baeddels talk about how they want to misgender and beat up “transandrophobia truthers”. I’ve seen people say they’ll kill fellow queer people who use the “toothpaste” ocean mlm flag. I’ve seen exclus talking about sending gore to mspec monos.

You guys seriously need to go outside and maybe get therapy if you have such violent tendencies towards fellow queer people. Like you honestly sound insufferable if you act like this. Where’s this energy towards the politicians killing us? Or do you just hate other queer people who aren’t queer in the way you like?
