🎯 Federal Judge Orders Oakland Airport to Stop Using 'San Francisco' in Name Amid Lawsuit

A federal judge has directed the Port of Oakland to cease using "San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport" as the name for its airport while a lawsuit filed by the city of San Francisco proceeds.

The lawsuit, initiated by San Francisco in April, claims trademark infringement and seeks a preliminary injunction. The city argues that the new name is misleading for travelers intending to fly to San Francisco International Airport and constitutes a breach of intellectual property rights.

On Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson ruled in favor of the copyright infringement claim, noting that San Francisco has invested millions in building its brand. The judge also instructed Oakland's airport to take down any signage featuring the new name.

Port of Oakland spokesperson Robert Bernardo stated that officials are reviewing the court's decision and are evaluating their next steps, which may include filing an appeal.

In May, the Port of Oakland's Board of Commissioners formally approved renaming Oakland International Airport, despite objections from San Francisco officials who argued the change could create confusion and negatively impact the financial standing of San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Oakland airport representatives have maintained that many travelers unfamiliar with the Bay Area mistakenly choose SFO, even when their intended destination is closer to Oakland. They believe renaming the airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport will help address this issue. However, the airport's three-letter code, OAK, would remain unchanged.

Port Commission President Barbara Leslie emphasized the importance of the decision in a statement following the vote. “We are advocating for Oakland and the East Bay,” she said. “The new name highlights that OAK is the nearest major airport for 4.1 million residents, three national laboratories, the nation’s top public university, and California’s Wine Country.”

This is what #generosity looks like. Just about everything in the #OaklandAirport was closed, or didn’t have anything #vegan - but I finally found a little bar with a refrigerator case. As I was about to spend $9 on one of these, the young fellow working the register pointed to a box on the counter and said they were required to throw all this food away at the end of the night, and asked me if I wanted to put the new hummus pack back and take one from the throw away box. He was smiling and kind and talked about what a shame it is that they are made to throw all this food out, and unable to take it out of the airport to feed the homeless or anything like that. I could tell it made him feel good to offer this to me. I thanked him, headed to my gate and filled my belly with this kindness. He didn’t have to give me anything, but he did. And that’s how this works, generosity takes effort. He connected with me, and I with him.
