Ssd For Mac Pro Retina
2010 Mac Pro Ssd
Ssd For Macbook Pro Retina 2015
I have a 15' Macbook Pro that is no longer under warranty. Back in October 2016, the original SSD hard drive failed. I bought another SSD to replace it and used time machine to restore my files without a problem. My drive failed again a week ago after displaying unusually behavior for several weeks, like crashing with few programs loaded or while browsing the internet. Then, one boot up, I saw the folder with the question mark. I could not even wipe the new drive in recovery mode with the disk utility because it would not show up. The only think I see is 'disk0' and under that, Mac OS X Base System which I know is not my new SSD given the size. It does not show up no matter what I do. I checked that the cable and SSD were in correctly etc.
Upgrade your 2012 - 2013 MacBook Pro Retina Display with an SSD for a total system performance and capacity boost. SSD kit includes all the tools you need. Apple MacBook Pro 15.4' Retina True Tone Laptop (Touch Bar, 9th Gen 8-Core Intel Core i9 2.30GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, AMD Radeon Pro 560X 4GB) Space Gray - A1990 (2019) Resolution: 2880 x 1800 Chipset: Intel Mobile Core i9.
OWC has also offered PCIe SSD upgrades for MacBook Pro Retina laptops from 2012 through early 2013. If you purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, you already shelled out at least $1,300 for the 13-in. Upgrade the PCIe-based flash SSD in your (Late 2013 - Mid 2015) MacBook Pro with Retina display with up to eight times the original capacity. Available in 24. Use this guide to upgrade or replace the solid-state drive in a MacBook Pro 15” Mid 2014. This MacBook Pro uses a proprietary storage drive connector, and is therefore not compatible with common M.2 drives without the use of an adapter. Before you perform this repair, if at all possible, back up your existing SSD.Then, either familiarize yourself with internet recovery or create a bootable.
Believing that the drive was faulty I bought ANOTHER ssd and installed it. Again I cannot get disk utility to recognize it so I can format and restore. I then bought the cable that attaches the SSD to the logic board thinking perhaps that was the problem, but still my SSD is not recognized.
What do I do to get my Mac to see the new SSD I have installed? I did not have this issue when I installed the first replacement. Would I even be able to get into the disk utility and recovery mode if this were an issue with the logic board or have I neglected something totally obvious here?
2010 Mac Pro Ssd
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Macs fan control work for imac
#Macs fan control work for imac upgrade#
#Macs fan control work for imac full#
#Macs fan control work for imac software#
Discovered that when booted from a USB drive, starting the SSD Fan Control daemon causes the SSD to entirely disappear from the System Information – hence the freeze when booted from the SSD itself.Ĭhris Upton: did the proposed solution fix the problem? Just encountered the same problem as Hugh. It took me a long time to isolate, but manually starting the daemon consistently froze the system. Has anyone else had the problem with SSD Fan Control or Macs Fan Control whereby the daemon freezes the system (keyboard and mouse have no effect, and spinning beachball of death spins until power cycle). I have 8GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD drive in mine. Love the 2011 iMac!! So upgradable and I still love the optical drive. This will blow out some dust and then you can set the fan speed at a more normal speed to keep your iMac cool. Set the fan speed to 100% (but not for too long). Randy, I forgot to say I use a 2011 imac still on Snow Leopard and loving it but I want to make my fans come on at 100% to blow the dust out.ĭownload and run Macs Fan Control ( ). Not very good ones here in Central FL and I don’t want to take back off. I don’t want to take it to a computer tech.
#Macs fan control work for imac full#
The fans used to come on at full speed occasionally to blow dust out but they haven’t for two years. It was getting hot to the touch and I blew the top slit with compressed air, also in the back. Is there a way I can make them come on HIGH. Randy, I want my fans to come on at full speed to blow the dust out. Just follow the OWC video and you’ll do well. At some point I’m going to add 4 more GB of memory and I figure I’ll be able to use this machine for a few more years. No fan noise and the new SSD was much more responsive. Finally I updated to macOS High Sierra (can’t go any higher on the mid-2011), and the machine ran like a clock. I bent the Display Port Cable initially and had to order another one from ebay.
Display Port Cable (not too difficult to disconnect but quite difficult to reattach).
Now you have the four cables to disconnect: So, off comes the glass (you really don’t need suction cups), and after eight screws out comes the screen.
#Macs fan control work for imac upgrade#
I did not want to pay the $39.00 but I wanted to do the upgrade the right way and I knew that a hardware solution to the fan problem was the right way to go.
#Macs fan control work for imac software#
I did not want to control the fans via a software solution so I “bit the bullet” and bought the $39.00 OWC In-Line Digital Thermal Sensor Cable. I also had to be constantly adjusting the smcFanControl settings.Ībout two months ago I decided to go with an SSD drive and I chose the Crucial MX500 SSD. I choose smcFanControl and I was fairly satisfied but I did notice that the back of the iMac still got very hot to the touch. I certainly didn’t want to open the thing back up so I went with a software solution. It therefore ran the fan speed at 100% all the time. My new drive had no temperature sensor on it, so my iMac motherboard didn’t know what the HD temperature was. The Hard Drive that Apple uses from the factory has a proprietary controller on it for reporting the drive temperatures to the motherboard. When I booted up the new install, the iMac fans went crazy. A few years ago I installed a new 1TB Hard Drive (spinning SATA).

#Apple egpu nvidia drivers
NVIDIA released new macOS drivers for its latest Pascal-based GPUs such as the 1080 ti just this year, so we were hopeful to get the amazing GTX performance on the Mac.Īlthough fitting it into the enclosure went without a hitch, we had to "liberate" one of the power pins inside the enclosure to adequately power the GTX 1080 ti. It is widely considered the best consumer GPU for VR gaming (the GTX Titan Xp is slightly higher spec but is considered "prosumer" and considerably more expensive). We went with a top-of-the-line NVIDIA GTX 1080 ti.
#Apple egpu nvidia install
So the solution would be to install a more capable GPU into the eGPU enclosure, right? The RX 580 being on the lower end of the GPU VR performance spectrum will in many instances fall into this reprojection fallback scenario. The problem with this technology is that it introduces visual artifacts such as ghosting that can reduce the level of immersion of the VR application. It does this by doubling up the frames to the VR headset so that it appears to be running at 90 FPS. There are GPU technologies such as Valve's asynchronous reprojection that allow for a weaker GPU to "fake" 90 FPS but actually be running at only 45 FPS. Anything below will cause a sense of disconnect and make the VR user feel queasy. In VR applications, in order for a user to not feel motion sickness, it is imperative that the frames per second (FPS) of the application runs at 90 FPS. You can run VR applications on it, but in terms of frame rate, it's on the lower end of the performance charts. If you follow the GPU industry, you'd note that as far as VR goes, the RX 580 is a capable but not an awe-inspiring graphics card. Can you change the GPU to a more powerful one? Not Yet. You can get more information about what's inside the box here. It also comes with a USB-C to USB-A adapter so that you can connect the HTC vie to your Mac. The eGPU dev kit comes with an AMD RX 580 with 8GB of ram and the enclosure has a single Thunderport 3 connection port. I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from AKiTiO Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 eGPU Enclosure + AMD Radeon RX 580 Graphics Card Bundle. So with these things in mind, I tried to see what I could get away with with as little tweaking as possible, knowing that I could be completely wasting my time using the enclosure beyond the supported features outlined in Apple's release notes. I'm very pleased so far with this purchase. It was a plug and play setup and I had it up and running in about 10 mins. It did seem large at first but upon consideration, I understand that room provides future upgradability. Performance is good.many times the graphics abilities built into my Mini.
#Apple egpu nvidia mac
This was only apparent to me because I'm using it with a silent Mac Mini. The eGPU enclosure has a built-in power supply so only a standard 3-prong power cable connects the unit to power (no external large power brick.) The unit is near-silent at idle but there is a little fan hum if you listen closely.
#Apple egpu nvidia upgrade
The AKiTiO enclosure is extremely well built and provides both the power and cooling requirements for a more powerful graphics card upgrade at a later date if needed. The card must be inserted in the eGPU enclosure which is a simple plugin that requires no tools. While both units are shipped together they are in their own individual packaging.
#Apple egpu nvidia professional
Reviewer: HappyMac53 Location: NC Age: Over 65 Experience Level: IT Professional Owned Product: less than a month Rating: 5/5 A well built eGPU I received my AKiTiO Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 eGPU Enclosure with Radeon RX 580 GPU quickly, only a couple of days after placing my order. I bought it here because everything I have bought from OWC over the years has been 100% compatible with any Mac I have used it for. The good part is I am getting 60fps in World of Warcraft. My unit is connected to a Mac mini which I do power off and I didn't want the eGPU on 24/7. The power switch is a tad confusing, in that obviously it needs to be on for the unit to work, but you also have to turn it off when you turn off the connected computer, or the fans in the eGPU run constantly. With one set, the fans on my GPU would never turn on, with the other, the fans worked fine. One set worked and the other did not, no clue why. The only thing that caused me pause was the additional power cables there are 2 sets of cables: two 2 prong and two 4 prong, for a 6 prong plug on the GPU. Fortunately it is really easy to install a GPU in this device. The instructions are almost completely useless. The included TB3 cable is pretty short so this also limits where you put the unit. I was going to put it on my desk but ended up putting it on the floor under my desk which works fine. Not really a problem, but it's huge: maybe 12 inches long, 10 inches high and about 6 inched wide. Rating: 4/5 My first eGPU DecemSeems to be a good product with a couple issues. OWC AURA PRO INSTALL VIDEO UPGRADE
Shortly after its release, tear-downs of the rMBP revealed both good and bad news: RAM was soldered to the system, and would not be user-upgradeable, but the internal SSD, despite its custom design, was removable and potentially upgradeable.Ībout two months after the rMBP’s release, Other World Computing (OWC), a longtime member of the Apple community and the first to release upgrades for many Macs with non-industry standard parts, released the Aura Pro, the first and thus far only third party SSD for the rMBP.Ĭurrently available in a single 480 GB capacity, the Aura Pro promises to increase rMBP storage speeds and provides a nice upgrade path for users who initially purchased their rMBP with a stock 256 GB drive and are now looking for more space.Īs mentioned above, OWC has been serving the Apple community since 1988, and they follow Apple’s “it just works” mentality. As Apple customers slowly stepped out of the “reality distortion field,” however, some were concerned that upgrading such a tightly-integrated beast would be impossible. When Apple announced the newly designed MacBook Pro with Retina Display (rMBP) at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, many marveled at the power and speed that a completely custom design could bring.

How to use Activity Monitor to free up RAM. Restarting your computer is the simplest way to free up RAM. How to clear memory on a MacRestart your Mac. It may also be an app that is hogging all of your resources. Though more expensive Macs have more RAM, even they can butt against limitations when too many applications are running. Mac memory usage is often occupied by apps, even browsers like Safari or Google Chrome. Moving from 4GB to 8GB of RAM (the most common upgrade) usually costs between $25 and $55, depending on whether you need to swap out a memory card or just add a few more gigs.
#HOW MUCH IS THE APPLECARE FOR MACBOOK PRO UPGRADE#
If you can upgrade your laptop's memory, it won't cost you much money or time. If you're doing any video rendering, music production, design work, or photography editing, you might see a big improvement in speed if you upgrade the RAM. How you use your computer determines whether a RAM upgrade is worth it or not. If you do a ton of memory-intensive work, upgrading the RAM may help. Some newer iMacs technically have user-upgradeable RAM, but doing so requires extensive teardown of the machine.
#HOW MUCH IS THE APPLECARE FOR MACBOOK PRO PRO#
Recent MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models have the RAM soldered to the motherboard. Unfortunately, most modern Macs don't allow you to upgrade the RAM yourself. For the vast majority of gamers, 16GB is enough.Ĭan you upgrade the RAM on a MacBook Pro? Instead, the extra capacity gives you some wiggle room in running other applications while your games are running.
#HOW MUCH IS THE APPLECARE FOR MACBOOK PRO FULL#
Few games, even the latest ones, will actually take advantage of a full 16GB of RAM. All 2011 MacBook Pro models - which include the early-2011 15-inch and 17-inch models, and the late-2011 13-inch and 15-inch models - support up to 16GB of RAM in the form of an 8GB module in each of the two slots.ġ6GB of RAM is the best place to start for a gaming PC. The most obvious upgrade is to add more RAM. How much RAM can I put in a late 2011 MacBook Pro?

One of the most common ways to upgrade your RAM is to replace your 4GB strips with 8GB strips, giving you a total 16GB.ĤGB RAM For Desktop Price ListBest 4GB RAM For Desktop Price List ModelsPriceHynix Genuine (H15201504-11) 4 GB DDR3 Desktop Ram₹1,349Kingston HyperX FURY (HX318C10F/4) DDR3 4GB PC RAM₹2,050Transcend JetRam (JM1333KLH-4G/JM1333KLN-4G) DDR3 4GB PC RAM₹1,750Kingston (KVR1333D3N9/4G) DDR3 4GB PC RAM₹1,673 Because of the way memory fits into your laptop or computer, it's actually quite easy to remove and expand. Mac Hard Drive
Over the past weeks, I’ve written approximately the (fantastically easy) technique of including strong nation drives (SSDs) to significantly accelerate older iMacs, and the various challenge degrees of including SSDs to older Mac Pros, Mac minis, and non-Retina MacBooks. Today’s manual seems at the easiest SSD installations of all: the MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro. A new SSD in this kind of machines ought to have two, 4, eight, or sixteen instances the original garage, plus two to four instances quicker speeds. Apple shipped maximum MacBook Airs and all Retina MacBook Pros with stable country storage, so upgrading those machines for extra capability and speed is usually as easy as choosing a brand new pressure, then the use of two special screwdrivers during the set up procedure. Assuming your Mac hard drive upgrade is old sufficient to be out of warranty — besides for some specific models — you’ll locate that quite a good deal everyone can handle this change with the right equipment. Below, I’m going to reveal those equipment to you, as well as the MacBook-ready SSDs which can be really worth thinking about… The unique MacBook Air became designed with stable state reminiscence as an option, now not a mandate. But those are Apple charges; 1/3-birthday party drives are an awful lot extra affordable. Following a few enormously straightforward pointers, you may bump a unique MacBook Air as much as 128GB for $ninety five, or beautify newer MacBooks for hundred and seventy, $three hundred or 1TB. Many MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro SSDs include kits that help you transfer the contents of the old power to the new one, open your laptop, and maintain the antique SSD round as an outside pressure if you want it. There key generations of the MacBook Air that use distinct styles of strong country drives. First-generation 13″ MacBook Airs (sold among 2008 and mid-2009) may be upgraded to a 1.8″ SSD with a ZIF connector. Second-generation thirteen″ MacBook Airs offered between 2008 and mid-2009 may be upgraded to a 1.8″ SATA force with among 120GB to 480GB of capability. Third-era MacBook Airs (eleven″ and thirteen″, offered among past due 2010 and mid-2011) use blade-fashion SATA III SSDs that appearance much like RAM forums. 9to5Mac’s Seth Weintraub delivered a $one hundred ninety 240GB Transcend JetDrive 500 SSD to his wife’s 2011 MacBook Air final yr; the same force now sells for $a hundred and seventy on Amazon, with a 480GB version at $three hundred, and a 960GB SSD at $540. They promise 460-570MB/second speeds. OWC’s Aura/Aura Pro collection for this specific Mac hard drive upgrade has had relatively terrible reviews, but a 1TB OWC drive for the identical computer may be had for $549 via Amazon. Fourth-generation MacBook Airs (eleven″ and thirteen″, offered starting mid-2012) need to go along with the 4.Eight/5-Star reviewed Transcend JetDrive 520 fashions. Mixed evaluations of OWC’s 240GB Aura Pro and 1TB Aura might deliver me pause. Fifth-technology MacBook Airs (eleven″ and 13″ offered beginning early-2013) switched to faster PCIe SSDs, which are not yet being offered by using Transcend or OWC for this specific laptop. Except for the older first- and 2nd-generation MacBook Airs, the method is pretty simple: you usually use a Pentalobe screwdriver to take away 10 screws from the Air’s backside, then a Torx T5 screwdriver to unscrew one screw on the SSD. The JBtek $nine kit shown below consists of each screwdrivers.

Imac 27 2019 Ram Slots
The screenshot below shows a variety of utilities all showing one of the new iMacs fully loaded with RAM: (Various macOS and third-party utilities showing a 2019 iMac loaded with 128GB of RAM.) Updated: Here are the prices and links for the memory upgrades now available for the 27-inch Retina 5K iMac: 64GB (2 x 32GB) – $579.99. I have had my 27' iMac for over a year now and really need to upgrade the ram as it is running so slow. I know where I am going to get my ram from but I would like to know how many ram slots I have. I have the 2020 27' iMac with two 4 GB RAM (2667MHz) from Apple installed in slots 1 (Channel A/DiMM1) and 3 (Channel B DiMM1). When I followed the instructions, and installed two OWC 16GB RAM chips (2667MHz) in the free slots (2 and 4), it told me that my Mac had 4 memory slots each of which accepts a 2133 MHz DDR4 memory module - which is. Apple has guidelines for the maximum amount of RAM each iMac model supports, but upgrade specialists say the devices are capable of supporting more. While earlier versions of the iMac (17-inch or 20-inch models from 2006) have two memory slots, starting with 2007 models Apple decided to implement four slots instead. With a maximum of 128GB of ram with 4 available memory slots, the 2019 iMac Retina 5K (27 inch) can boost performance cost-effectively with NEMIX RAM's memory upgrades. NEMIX RAM's 27' 2019 iMac Retina 5K ram upgrades are for the following models: iMac 19,1.
I am expecting a new 27 inch iMac tomorrow, and I plan on upgrading the ram. I have watched the videos on how to upgrade the ram; and in some videos they mix the existing Apple ram and the new ram. I am transitioning from the PC world and I would like to know if this is a common practice. I plan on installing 16 gig Corsair Vengeance ram, which is supported by Apple in the 2017 27 inch iMac. Should I mix the ram, or only use the Corsair Vengeance ram? Any and all replies are greatly appreciated from a Mac newbie.
iMac

You might have heard plenty of times that it’s better to buy a Mac with the maximum amount of RAM (random access memory). Why? The answer is very easy: there is no such thing as too much system memory. Just consider the fact that the more RAM your iMac has installed, the more windows and/or tabs it can have open at one time without slowing down. Also, with physical memory available, macOS won’t need to resort to using virtual memory, which ultimately slows things down.
iMac RAM upgrades are easy for most models, and it’s a good idea to do it yourself, for two reasons: firstly you’ll get to know your iMac better, and secondly it’s possible to save a few hundred bucks rather than having Apple do the expensive upgrade. There are a few situations, though, where you might need to contact Apple or an Apple authorized service provider to install the RAM. Memory isn't removable by users on 21.5 inch iMacs from late 2012, late 2013, mid 2014 and 2017. Nor is it possible to manually remove the RAM on a 21.5 Retina display from 2017, either. In these cases, sadly you will need to pay higher prices to get the upgrade you want.
How to Upgrade iMac RAM
Upgrading your iMac with more RAM is super-easy and requires only a few steps. The first and most obvious task is to identify your iMac to know which memory it is that you will need to purchase. The price of the memory module will differ based on the iMac model you own.
Download CleanMyMac X from MacPaw’s website and clean up to 500MB of junk data from your computer while enjoying all the features of the software without major limitations.
However, we highly recommend checking the type of RAM you need to buy, otherwise the iMac won’t recognize it.
Here’s a guideline for the type of RAM you should be looking to buy, depending on your model of iMac:
Mid 2007 models use 200-pin 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Early 2008 models use 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Early 2009 models use 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
It’s worth noting that memory specifications change dependent on the iMac model, and so models after this can include additional sizes of memory. As such:
Late 2009 iMacs can equip 2GB or 4GB SO-DIMM, DDR3, or SDRAM formats of RAM, running at 1066 MHz in each slot.
Mid 2010 and mid 2011 iMacs can also use 2GB or 4GB SO-DIMM, DDR3, or SDRAM formats, with a maximum of 1333 MHz in each slot.
Meanwhile, 27-inch models manufactured between late 2012 and mid 2015 with the option to upgrade the RAM each come with a base memory of 8GB, and support a maximum of 32GB. The earlier 27-inch and 21.5-inch models released between late 2009 and mid 2011 support only 16GB of RAM, according to Apple.
Once you’ve figured out which memory types are compatible with your iMac, installing the RAM is easy. It only requires a few minutes, but there is still a slight difference between some models since Apple migrated from one design to another. Essentially the one thing you’ll need for all models is a soft, clean towel or cloth that you’ll place on the desk or other flat surface to protect the display from getting scratched.
The installation of the memory is pretty straightforward: first, you need to locate the memory compartment. On models released between 2006 and 2011 this is located at the bottom. The memory access door is secured by three screws on these earlier models.
On newer models released after 2012, this compartment is located on the back of the iMac above the AC power port. Apple made access easier, and the memory compartment opens with a button. A full step-by-step guide on how to install iMac RAM on various models is available on Apple’s support page.
One last thing that you should be careful with when upgrading your iMac’s memory is the compatibility between each of the individual components. Computer operating systems handle memory in very specific ways, so after finding the right type of RAM for your iMac with the guidelines above you should then try to ensure that you upgrade your system with matching memory.
Why Not Apple RAM
It’s good to have the maximum amount of RAM in your iMac at the moment of purchase, since this is a good way to expand its lifespan. But if you didn’t opt for the maximum RAM, then that’s no problem because you can upgrade it at anytime. And you won’t break the bank, either. In fact, this is the main reason why we don't recommend maxing out RAM at the moment of purchase of an iMac with upgradeable memory. For example, the mid 2017 21.5-inch 4K iMac comes with 8GB of RAM. But if you want to upgrade to 16GB it will cost you an additional $200, while 32GB of 2400MHz DDR4 RAM (the maximum supported) adds another $600. By comparison, a similar non-Apple 32GB DDR4 2400MHz kit costs $250 on Amazon.
In other words, while a factory upgrade is nice as you won’t have to worry about performance for the next ten years or so, it does come at a cost. Opting for a third party RAM upgrade will save a significant amount of cash, and considering how easy upgrading is this is definitely something worth doing.
Best RAM Brands for iMac
With so much choice available when it comes to system memory, it can be a challenge just to pick the one that is right for you. As such, we’ve picked three brands that we think you should consider when looking to upgrade your iMac’s memory.
Crucial
U.S. company Micron Technology can be found among the top ten companies for memory manufacturers; it produces affordable memory modules through its Crucial subsidiary. The company has products in computer memory, internal SSD and internal HDD categories on the Amazon store. If you are eyeing an iMac RAM upgrade, Crucial’s products should be on your list since its memory upgrade kits are well priced. For example, a Crucial 32GB Kit (16GB × 2) DDR4 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory costs $239.99 compared to Apple’s $600. Crucial has modules for earlier versions, as well, and maxing out RAM in an iMac released between 2012 and 2015 would cost you roughly $200 if you opt for four 8GB modules ($103/2 × 8GB).
OWC
Other World Computing’s (OWC) “MaxRAM” Certification Program is often cited by Mac blogs. It’s software that determines the maximum amount of memory supported by any Mac. As a retailer deeply connected with Apple’s platform, the U.S. computer hardware company OWC sells memory modules through its online store, MacSales. Here, besides getting a good quality RAM module, it is possible to find out how much RAM your iMac actually supports based on OWC’s testing results and then go on to purchase the modules. For example, Apple suggests the mid 2010 iMac supports only 16GB of RAM, but OWC has discovered that the actual maximum is 32GB. That means even greater performance for a long time.
Timetec
Ram For Imac 27
Timetec, another U.S. memory manufacturer, was founded in 2013 and seeks to provide memory modules to compete with established players such as Kingston, Corsair, Crucial and OWC. Although the Timetec name may not sound familiar to many, the Hynix name does, and Timetec uses integrated circuits from this renowned IC manufacturer. Timetec tries to position itself as a budget-friendly option, and just a quick glance at its products on offer would confirm that to you: while Crucial’s two 8GB RAM kit for a late 2012 iMac costs $103, the same package sold by Timetec comes in at $85.99.
Video Guide and Instructions
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how much is a video worth? But would you prefer written guidance or a step-by-step video on how to install memory into your iMac? OWC’s online store, MacSales.com, is the best option for easy-to-follow video guides. Here you’ll find detailed videos on how to install memory and SSDs into your iMac and various other Mac products. These video guides deliver just the right amount of information that you won’t find on Apple’s iMac RAM upgrade support page.
Of course, if you have already done a few RAM upgrades then the steps should be familiar, but those upgrading their iMac’s for the first-time should definitely watch the tutorial videos to get an overview of the complete process from beginning to end.
FAQ
Should I Upgrade My iMac’s RAM?
The short answer: yes, definitely. When it comes to performance, any computer’s limits – even the iMac’s – are outlined by its technical specifications. The more RAM you have, the better the computer performs in the long term. To understand the reasons for a RAM upgrade, you should know about its role: random access memory is where macOS, apps and data currently in use by the system are stored. This enables quick access to that data by the computer's processor. The advantage of RAM is that it is much faster to read/write from/to than other storage type in your Mac. But when your Mac reaches the physical limits of its RAM storage, it turns to the system’s virtual memory, which is much slower since it utilizes the startup disk. If this happens then you’ll certainly notice your Mac running slow.
Does Upgrading My iMac’s RAM Void Warranty?
Performance slowdown is a very good sign that your iMac deserves a RAM upgrade. If you have AppleCare+ or the one-year limited warranty is still valid, then know that upgrading memory doesn’t void warranty. Unfortunately, this claim is only valid for iMac models that allow the user to replace the memory. If you opted for – as an example – a 21.5-inch iMac (late 2013 model) then sadly the only warranty-acceptable option for RAM upgrades is via Apple-authorized services or Apple itself. But upgrading RAM on the 27-inch model from the same year, for instance, can still be performed manually at home without ruining your warranty. As such, before jumping on the RAM upgrade hype-train, be sure to always check Apple’s support page to identify what is possible for your iMac.
How Much Memory Does My iMac Need?
Every iMac comes with a minimum amount of memory that it needs for even basic performance. But that’s mainly optimized for the operating system released in the year of that particular iMac’s launch, and as technology and operating systems advance the physical limits of the installed memory modules are reached more quickly. Although Apple has done a great job of optimizing macOS for earlier Mac models, there are still going to be more issues with their limited hardware resources as the machine gets older.
Also, while Apple suggests a maximum amount of supported RAM on every iMac model it releases, as OWC’s tests have shown these machines are capable of recognizing up to twice as much as Apple’s guidelines. The more memory your iMac has, the better the computer’s performance and longer its lifespan.
Optimizing RAM Usage
Still, having the maximum amount of RAM under the hood doesn’t mean you don’t need to pay attention to the remaining details for optimal performance. If this means a change in usage habits, then consider it well worth the investment.
macOS has a very good memory management tool called Activity Monitor, which allows knowledgeable users to keep an eye on resource-demanding applications. But if you want a similar experience that is packed into a more convenient and visually appealing user interface, third party Mac optimization apps can help to manage memory usage.

Mini-SAS offers more 'lanes' for data to travel, providing the ability to reach higher speeds. Just like the SATA/eSATA interface, mini-SAS offers the convenience of a one cable connection. However, in a multi-drive SATA/eSATA solution which, only offers one lane for four drives to send/receive data on, mini-SAS provides four separate lanes so each drive can deliver its maximum capable data transfer rate. Now you can use one or more mini-SAS equipped external storage enclosures like the OWC Mercury Rack Pro for greater speed, protection, or both compared to single channel multi-drive eSATA RAID or eSATA Port Multiplier solutions.
Up to 6.0Gb/sper lane
The MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G-2e card features two external mini-SAS ports that enable connecting and RAIDing multi-drive mini-SAS external enclosures or up to eight eSATA external enclosures via mini-SAS to eSATA breakout cables.
Automatic Device Passthrough
The MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G-2e has an automatic passthrough feature that will pass any connected drive to the OS without needing to initialize it via the Web Manager. With other RAID cards, the card's RAID system takes immediate control of the drive rendering it unusable until you configure it. With the MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G-2e card, as soon as an unformatted drive is inserted, it is immediately available for formatting with no need to release it from the RAID system. This feature lets the card act like a non-RAID card, which is helpful when you just want to swap single non-RAIDed drives in and out quickly. The MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G-2e card can be configured to set aside extra drives in a 'spare pool'. If a drive should fail in RAID 1, 5, 10 or 50 modes, a drive from the spare pool is instantly implemented so a rebuild can start immediately, minimizing the risk of data loss.
NewerTech RAID Manager Offers Easy Array Management

Does the MAXPower mini-SAS 6G card support tape devices?
The MAXPower mini-SAS 6G card was optimized to RAID HDD's and SSD's and does not support tape devices. When using Passive/passthrough mini-SAS storage solutions equipped with '6G' 6Gb/s (SATA 3.0 Revision) drives, we strongly recommend only using connecting cables of 1 meter or shorter length due to the increased signal integrity requirements of 6G drives. Active storage solutions such as SAS expander systems equipped with 6G drives can utilize mini-SAS connecting cables up to 10 meters in length. This is dependent upon the external enclosure.

Update Macbook Pro Firmware
2019 Macbook Pro Firmware Update
Macbook Pro Smc Firmware Update 1.7
Apple has released a new firmware update for its AirPods Max, one that fixes battery issues experienced by a few owners. The new update name is 3C39 and replaces 3C16, which was the firmware number when AirPods Max was first launched. Here’s an unusual update. Apple has released macOS 11.2.2 Big Sur, saying that the update prevents MacBook Pro models from 2019 and later and MacBook Air models from 2020 and later from being damaged by “certain third-party, non-compliant, powered USB-C hubs and docks.” Apple lists no other changes, even security fixes. By default, 13-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro models are configured with 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of SSD storage. Via custom configuration, some models also can, or could, be equipped with as much as 768 GB or 1 TB of SSD storage at the time of purchase. Additionally, Apple’s latest AirPods firmware update adds the automatic switching feature to your second-gen AirPods and AirPods Pro. We’ll get into both of these below, but for now, here’s.

The MacBook Pro 'Core 2 Duo' 2.4 13-Inch (Mid-2010) features a 45 nm 'Penryn' 2.4 GHz Intel 'Core 2 Duo' processor (P8600), with two independent processor 'cores' on a single silicon chip, a 3 MB shared 'on chip' level 2 cache, a 1066 MHz frontside bus, 4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500) installed in pairs (two 2 GB modules), a 250 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, an 8X DL 'SuperDrive', a NVIDIA GeForce 320M 'graphics processor with 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory', integrated iSight, and an LED-backlit 13.3' widescreen TFT active-matrix 'glossy' display (1280x800 native resolution). Connectivity includes AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a Firewire '800' port, two USB 2.0 ports, the same 'combined optical digital output/headphone out (user-selectable analog audio line in)' port used by the iPhone, a 'Mini DisplayPort' that supports an external display at 2560x1600 (it also passes an audio signal), and an SD card slot. This model uses a 'Unibody' aluminum case design -- milled from a single piece of aluminum -- and has a backlit keyboard, a new 'no button' glass 'inertial' multi-touch trackpad, and a non-swappable battery design that provides up to 10 hours of battery life. Compared to its predecessor, this model has a very similar external enclosure, but an enhanced trackpad, and the same connectivity, except for the enhanced audio passing Mini DisplayPort. Internally, it has a similar architecture as well (with the same bus speed and memory), but has improved graphics and battery life. Also see:

How do you upgrade or replace the storage in the 13-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro models? Is it the same storage and process as the 15-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro? Is it possible?
By default, 13-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro models are configured with 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of SSD storage. Via custom configuration, some models also can, or could, be equipped with as much as 768 GB or 1 TB of SSD storage at the time of purchase.
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage after purchase. However, as firstreportedby site sponsor Other World Computing, the SSD is installed as a removable module in all of these systems and is fairly straightforward to upgrade.
However, different lines use different proprietary SSD modules and it is important to identify both the MacBook Pro and the SSD module correctly.

Upgrade Obstacles & Compatible SSD Details
Apple does not intend for end users to upgrade the SSD in these models themselves, the company even has used uncommon 'pentalobe' screws -- also called five-point Torx screws -- to discourage access. Typora mac. However, access is straightforward with the correct screwdriver, the SSD is simple to access, and upgrades are not blocked in firmware, either. There are two significantly different SSD designs for these models, though.
There is one 6 Gb/s SATA-based SSD for the 'Late 2012' and 'Early 2013' 13-Inch Retina MacBook Pro models. Unlike the 15-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro, the SSD in the 'Late 2012' and 'Early 2013' models is mounted in a small 'drive caddy' that can hold a 5 mm or 7 mm tall SSD (or hard drive), in lieu of the small proprietary SSD module that Apple uses.

The proprietary PCIe 2.0-based SSD in the 'Late 2013' and subsequent models is limited to a smaller 'blade' option, though. By default, the 'Late 2013' and 'Mid-2014' models negotiate a x2 PCIe connection, but in testing, OWC discovered that when a 'blade' SSD from a Cylinder Mac Pro was installed in a 'Late 2013' or 'Mid-2014' model, it 'negotiates a x4 PCIe connection versus the stock cards, which negotiate a x2 PCIe connection,' which means that this newly transplanted SSD was substantially faster than the stock one. The 'Early 2015' models support a x4 PCIe connection by default.
Upgrade Instructions
The bottom panel of the 13-Inch Retina Display MacBook Pro is attached with ten screws of differing lengths. After removing the bottom of the notebook, the battery removal process is fairly involved -- with four more screws to unscrew before disconnecting the battery -- but the drive caddy itself is easy to remove.
OWC provides excellent videos to walk one through the entire procedure for all of the 13-Inch 'Retina Display' MacBook Pro models:
