Headcanons
Rem has studied martial arts with a focus on judo and karate since childhood which has made her quite agile and well versed in different techniques. The role as Dream Guardian was assigned to Rem during her early teenage years but signs of spirituals gifts showed themself early on.
There is little known of Rem's parents and background. As Rem is fighting off a demonic entity that feeds on teenage hatred and revenge she is shrunk into a small child who's calling for her mother's comfort. Based on this it could be concluded that they havent seen each other in a very long time. I headcanon that Rem's mother used to be a Dream Guardian and for one reason or another decided to be a single parent despite knowing the risks her role could bring to a child's life. A Dream Guardian's life is quite tumultious after all. In order to keep them both safe she travelled to a temple for protective rituals during the pregnancy. During the birth they both were nearly attacked by a demonic entity but were protected by an elderly monk.
As Rem grew up she soon showed signs of spiritual gifta which alarmed her mother. Thus she started to place Rem in extensive training to prepare her for the coming dangers. She made sure to contact her old friend Gepetto who's aided her for years with weapons, cars and gadgets to make sure Rem would be familiar with guns and sword fights as well. Gepetto soon became a grandparent figure in Rem's life while her mother battled demons once again. Her mother was last seen leaving to Tokyo for finding a violent succubus who targeted young monks in training. What happened is still debated but Rem's still searching far and wide after her while also solving paranormal cases.

"'Ey, Strawberry Shortcake, is Angel in? He's had my Sunday Dress for ova' a week. I'm gonna need it this weekend 'n' he's been ignorin' my texts." - @pxppinmolly (succubus!molly verse :3)
"Molly! What a pleasant surprise," the Radio Demon greeted her, both hands resting on top of his cane which was in front of him.
"Not at the moment. He hasn't been here much at all this week because I believe Valentino is 'riding him hard' in his words. We are expecting him shortly though so you are quite welcome to stay if you'd like," Alastor offered, removing one hand from his microphone cane and gesturing towards the bar and lobby area.

The R-Lore #4: The Writer
How it began
In 2008, a just turned 10 year old boy in the small European country Austria was bored during his class, where he thought about "What if Sonic was in our world?" and thus his mind started racing. With this thought, he started something that lasted for many years.
The invaders and the group
Sonic, Tails, and Eggman appeared outside of his classroom and after a short fight, Sonic and Tails ran off.
When the boy went to sleep at his home, he interacted with Sonic and Tails (who turned themselves into his plushies) and got the idea to protect the world from Eggman (and potentially other villains) as a group.
About two years later, the boy read the 4th(?) issue of "Sonic der Comic"("Sonic the Comic") and came across the short comic "Mr. T and the T-Force". After a short read, he got the idea to name his imaginary group "R-Force", after his first name "Roman".
Many adventures and the " end" of the group
After 4 years filled with imagined adventures of the "R-Force", Roman decided to put a nice end to his group after "defeating his evil Twin brother called 'Böser Roman'('Evil Roman')".
The big finale between the R-Force, now filled with characters from different cartoons and video games, versus the "X", an organization filled with villains from cartoons and led by "Böser Roman"(shrotened to "BR") ended when Roman graduated middle school
The start of "The Adventures of Roman"
One day in 2013, after going home from computer class, Roman got the idea to make an anime... in his head.
The anime turned into a mix of "Guy gets isekaied to an anime" and "What if guy got superhuman powers, he had his whole life". In that anime, "Roman Mayr"(yes, a self-insert) was turned into the protagonist with a special gimmick that gives him "god-like" powers. At first, that gimmick was unnamed but after having the gimmick "out of his body" it was named "Emerald Heart", based on its appearance of a Chaos Emerald from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
In another "episode", Roman replaced Yuzuru Otonashi (the male protagonist of the anime "Angel Beats") in his respected anime and during the story, his unnamed powers got the name "Scart Skills"(it would be actually "Guard Skills" but I misheard it in the anime as "Sguard Skils" and that turned into that name)
Many TAoR seasons later
Roman had a lot of fun to create his own anime in his head, but sadly the anime went much longer then expected... over 40 seasons with an unknown amount of episodes.
The second iteration
At one point, around the end of 2017/beginning of 2018, Roman decided to end his anime in a two-part movie. The first part is a "What happened after the final fight", where his grandson will find the girls from DDLC and learns about the R-Force(and everything that happened in those over 40 seasons), and the second, where his grandson has to face "Ruppet" who came into the original series after about 35 seasons.
After he imagined the two movies, Roman was still not satisfied to end it there. So he decided to make "TAoR 2.0", which consist of many MANY OVAs split into multiple timelines.
In one timeline, the R-Force became an intergalactic band who has to win a tournament to get the "Super Phantom Ruby"(the same Phantom Ruby from Sonic Forces, but much powerful to influence the whole universe), and in another, Ruppet became good but that triggered the destruction of the dimension and the main unit got kidnapped by the X a month before the dimension got extinct.
The third iteration
"TAoR Alternate" is Romans third version of his anime(and the current one), where in 2020(without COVID) he suddenly get visited by a succubus who he has to protect from the succubus hunter "Ruppet"(not the same Ruppet, he appeared later in the series) and then learn about his new heart. That version had not so many seasons, like the first one, but its timeline spans over one thousand years.
It started nearly the same as the first version, but many changes were made. For example, a new villain named "Kai"(the R-Force supercomputer "Ai" infected by Ruppets virus), "White"(he was actually always there since the first version... also he looks like Friagne from Shakugan no Shana but with the face of Sebastian from Black Butler... somehow), and lastly the destruction of Ruppet(he is now stored in a stone in his original dimension).
Currently, his successor "Mika"(with help of Charlotte Wilthsire, Scarlett Eyler, Henrietta "Anri" Warhol, and all nearly three thousand "Gods Hearts") has to face a new incarnation of BR, who has taken over hell and could be powerful enough, to eradicate the whole R-Force and the linage of the "Gods Heart".
The fourth iteration
Back in 2020, after looking for an artist and rigger for a new model, I needed to think of a background story for "him".
And that's when I decided to create this.
The fourth version of TAoR has started in January 2021 as an interactive experience. So, follow me as "The R-Man" and as "Ronika"(and also as Ruppet) in this version, where you have to either get R-Man back to his original dimension or let Ruppet loose onto this world.
More about that in the stream, that should've started by now.
-Roman "The Writer"

Mini-Review: Interviews with Monster Girls
A time when demi-humans have slowly begun to be accepted into human society but remain rare, and most humans have little knowledge about them. High school biology teacher Tetsuo discovers he has three demi students, along with a new demi coworker, and hopes to learn more about their lives.
This short (12 episodes + an OVA) series was really fun and enjoyable! The idea is that many mythological beings are actually demi-humans--born to humans (all the demi characters have human parents, and the vampire actually has a human twin) and generally embodying only some of the aspects ascribed to their mythology. For example, the snow woman (yuki-onna, a Japanese legend) can chill the air around her when experiencing negative emotions, cries ice and is very susceptible to heat, but can’t hurt people or freeze them.
A large part--but not all--of the series is focused on Tetsuo interviewing (formally and informally) the girls, and thus the viewer gets to see the difference between “real” demis and their legends. Hikari the vampire--my favorite character--is cheerful and enthusiastic, drinks blood from packets occasionally, and is sensitive to the heat, but doesn’t need to attack people, isn’t repelled by garlic, and doesn’t turn into a bat. She does, sometimes, have “itchy teeth” and just needs to nom on things without breaking the skin--usually her human twin sister, as seen below.
The show walks a line between teacher Tetsuo’s curiosity and prying too much, and occasionally I think it landed on the side of Things You Shouldn’t Discuss With Your Students (like, how does biological process X work in your body?), but to the show’s credit it didn’t linger there, and I think maybe it could have been trying to actually show that Tetsuo was sometimes getting so caught up in his research interest that he was forgetting whether something was actually appropriate?
The show also addresses his relationship with the students--there’s actually a whole episode dedicated to the question of “do the demi girls rely on him too much? Should Tetsuo step back from seeing them so often?”, and I also want to note that at no point is it implied that Tetsuo ever is *interested* in any of his students. He’s very much a teacher/mentor and remains in that role; the demis actually come to like him so much because he’s one of the few humans who is willing to openly ask them questions about their demi sides.
The difference and tension between “demi” and “human” is part of the show, especially because most demi-humans don’t seem to have demi ancestry. The girls’ classmates are reluctant to ask any questions about demis, or even to acknowledge their differences. Kyouko the dullahan can crack a joke about being headless and her classmates are unsure how to respond--laugh? Make their own joke? Awkwardly change the subject (bingo)--when all she wants is for people to not pretend that, like, her head isn’t sitting on a pillow on her desk.
There’s a secondary plot following new math teacher Sakie, a succubus who can cause arousal with just a touch, or even being in just close proximity. This is something of a disability--she has to take the first and last trains each day to avoid crowds, can’t live in an apartment complex, is always covered neck-to-toe and wears glasses to obscure her face, and obviously tries to avoid touching anyone.
Tetsuo, who understands proper adult behavior and manners, works very hard not to show if she affects him because obviously she is his Valued Coworker who doesn’t want to cause problems. Apparently this doesn’t happen often (or hey, maybe he does have super willpower) because she is blown away that he can continue talking to her like a rational human. Seriously, this guy attracts demis like black shirts attract my white cat’s fur, all through the power of Normal Conversation and Remembering His Manners.
Pictured below: Sakie under the impression that Tetsuo is immune to any aphrodisiac affect; Tetsuo not understanding the idea of flirting and trying his darndest to stay cool.
Verdict
English dub? Yes, and it’s great. Hikari the vampire in particular, I loved her enthusiasm and ability to sound like an actual teenage girl. Tetsuo also sounded just like an affable adult, very natural.
Visuals: Pretty standard. I didn’t notice any wonkiness in the characters or backgrounds, but also nothign that really made it stand out. The opening and closing sequences are really fun, though: the opening has the demi characters in front of their demi caricatures (see the first gif above for Hikari the vampire’s), and the closing is a sweet sequence showing art being colored in.
Worth watching? Yes! It’s a fun high school comedy more from the perspective of a teacher, and I really enjoyed all the characters. I hope we get another season, because I think it would have benefited from more episodes. It tries to follow a lot--Tetsuo, each of the individual demi students, and succubus teacher Sakie as well--so some bits (Sakie, tbh) got less than they needed.
(There’s really 2 stories this series wants to tell: one about demi-humans in human society overall, and one that goes in depth with each character, their specific quirks, and relationships. It doesn’t have time to do both. And while the students’ stories at least can overlap with each other because they’re all friends, Sakie, like Tetsuo, has more alone time or time-with-secondary-adults by virtue of being not a student. And so any time really focused on her and/or her+Tetsuo together required more plot set-up. I’m definitely not saying this is bad, just that it would’ve been stronger if it had had more episodes in which to tell its story.)
Where to watch (USA, as of June 2020): Funimation (sub and dub); Crunchyroll (sub)

My Review of Konosuba

(Short for: KonoSuba - God's Blessing on This Wonderful World)
How did I get into this anime? As you all know, I’m being an absolute lazy-ass when it comes to Isekai animes and have only gotten into the recent hits as of 2019. I already finished the suffer edition and the struggle edition. Let’s check out the light-hearted, wonk-fest! But before that…

Let’s go back to the mid-1990s and rewatch the first episode of Yu Yu Hakusho. We all remember Yusuke Urameshi sacrificing his life in order to save a child about to be hit by a truck followed by being told that the child would have survived regardless if Yusuke interfered or not. So dude just wasted his fucking life for nothing! Let’s amp this trope up to 483 with the way our main lead in Konosuba dies. Kazuma Satou was on his way back home from purchasing a video game when he noticed a girl about to be hit by a car. He pushes her out of the way and yada, yada, yada he’s dead!
He is now in a limbo setting, standing before a goddess named Aqua who tells Kazuma that his death was absolutely meaningless. Not only would the girl have survived, it wasn’t even a car, it was a slow-moving tractor. And Kazuma didn’t get hit by the tractor, he suffered a heart attack due to shock, followed by pissing his pants, followed by doctors, family, and relations laughing at Kazuma’s humiliating experience. And then he dies!
Aqua tells Kazuma that he has two options. He can either go to Heaven or be transported to a fantasy world (much like a game) and try to defeat a demon king. Choosing the fantasy world, Kazuma is given the opportunity to take an item with him on his travels. Now at this point, Kazuma has been annoyed by this goddess’s attitude towards him and decides to be a dick. So Kazuma chooses Aqua to be with him on his journey. Sucks for Kazuma however, because Aqua is useless! And unlike the video games Kazuma’s used to, he and Aqua must do manual labor and pay off expenses in the first town. So they might be there for a while.
Kazuma ends up with two more members in his crew including a witch named Megumin that uses explosive magic and a masochistic crusader named Lalatina Dustiness Ford (or Darkness for short). But don’t get too excited! Megumin’s magic can only be used once a day, wiping away her energy. And while Darkness has a mean sword, she misses every time with it. So yeah, this is a rag-tag team of useless dopes. Let’s watch the wacky misadventures of Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness as they go on missions, drink until they puke, explode castles, and steal underwear.
Yes, Kazuma occasionally does this.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Crunchyroll has been able to bless the masses with an English dub. Can’t let FUNimation have all the Isekai hits. So far it’s been alright and I’m hearing more Erica Mendez and Cristina Vee. All good things here! Plus it gives me a chance to hear the voices of Kazuma, whom up to this point I have minimal time listening to either person who plays him. And annoying as Aqua may be, Faye Mata does a really good job with that range Sora Amamiya set in the original. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Kazuma is played by Jun Fukushima (known for Naruko on Yowamushi Pedal and Makoto on Fruits Basket 2019)
*Aqua is played by Sora Amamiya (known for Touka on Tokyo Ghoul, Chizuru on Rent A Girlfriend, Miia on Monster Musume, Yachiyo on Magia Record, Akame on Akame ga Kill, and Elizabeth on Seven Deadly Sins)
*Megumin is played by Rie Takahashi (known for Emilia on Re:Zero)
*Darkness is played by Ai Kayano (known for Alice on SAO: Alicization, Menma on Anohana, Nana on Golden Time, Ryouko on Food Wars, Itsuwa on Index, Yukika on My Love Story, and Mayaka on Hyouka)
ENGLISH CAST: *Kazuma is played by Arnie Pantoja (known for Watchdog-Man on One Punch Man and Kanbarry on Re:Zero)
*Aqua is played by Faye Mata (known for Rin on Love Live, Aluminum Siren on Sailor Moon Stars, Yukako on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Pt. 4, Frederica on Re:Zero, and a bitch on Shield Hero)
*Megumin is played by Erica Mendez (known for Ryuko on Kill la Kill, Haruka/Sailor Uranus on Sailor Moon S [redub], Raphtalia on Shield Hero, Retsuko on Aggretsuko, Nico on Love Live, and Emma on The Promised Neverland)
*Darkness is played by Cristina Vee (known for Homura on Madoka Magica, Rei/Sailor Mars on Sailor Moon, Mio on K-ON, Sakura on Fate/Stay Night UBW, Kotori on Love Live, and Kanaria on Rozen Maiden: Traumend)
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Darkness is best girl, don’t at me!
SHIPPING (sorta): Can we just all agree that Darkness is just a sober version of Cheryl from Archer?
Whoever ends up with her will end up choking her either because she tells you to or she annoys you with her masochistic nature! I seriously do not know how you want me to turn this shipping discussion into anything other than a comment about a bitch getting choked.
ENDING TO SEASON ONE: Kazuma has been able to get a little good luck in his other world as he was finally able to move out of the stables and into a house with the rest of his crew. Although, it didn’t come easy! Then again, what has in this series? In the final episode of the first season, all of the adventures of the town were called to take on a scary foe. Up to this point, we’ve seen these guys take out mutant cabbages and an idiot dullahan. Today we’ve got…

A giant, mechanical spider!
Why do the stupidest stories always rely on a giant, mechanical spider? Kazuma and the rest were able to stop the spider from moving. However, this monstrosity is set to explode and the impact could take out the entire town. Darkness wants to repay the town for all it has done for her and her family. The adventurer men want to repay the town because of all the succubus taverns they love. And Kazuma just wants to continue his journey so he can take out the demon king. Now, because Megumin already used her explosion magic for the day, she’s down for the count. But she was able to do it a second time thanks to Kazuma transferring some magic from Aqua through his spell and with a little help from Wiz. The day is saved, Kazuma and his crew got a hefty reward, and then Kazuma is immediately charged with treason for sending the evidence to a higher up and it exploded.

Believe it or not, but a lot of these quests end with a giant middle finger to them. Almost like Curb Your Enthusiasm!
EPISODE 11: The special episode that followed came with some more misfortune for Kazuma. A trip to Wiz’s shop ends with a choker around Kazuma’s neck that’s going to strangle him in three days if his wish doesn’t come true. So to figure out what Kazuma’s wish is, Kazuma has all of these girls fulfill his greatest desires in the hopes of one of these humiliating tasks will release Kazuma from the choker.

As you can guess, because this is an OVA, it will be filled to the brim with degeneracy compared to the television series. Fuck yeah it was! Kazuma used this opportunity to use Wiz’s tits as comfy pillows, have Megumin play “Strip Rock/Paper/Scissors” with Yunyun, have Aqua fetch him food, and watch Darkness jiggle her breasts. Even when he thought he was at death’s door, he uses this special time to tell each girl with him at this dramatic moment that they are nothing more than tits and ass. All except for Aqua! No love for her. Not even a pity erection! So when the spell on the choker was released due to a simple wish, Kazuma was then killed by Aqua and quite possibly everyone else and Kazuma was sent back to the goddess chamber as he learned a powerful lesson.
Don’t ever do that again!
Damn…Kazuma died 3 times so far in 11 episodes. Subaru got you beat by a country mile. He’s probably looking at you like, “You damn, lucky dumbass. I got frozen, shanked, stabbed, sliced, maced, and eaten by bunnies”.

SEASON TWO: As I mentioned at the end of season one, Kazuma is charged with treason and usually that comes with a death sentence. Unfortunately for Kazuma, his unintentional crime was against this big, fat, smelly noble who has many higher-ups wrapped around his finger. The townspeople can’t really help him out otherwise they’d risk being charged as well. And you have a prosecutor wanting Kazuma’s head on a pike not only for the major charge, but for being a pervert. The writing is on the wall, Kazuma is screwed. However, thanks to Darkness (and her family lineage) she was able to take one for the team by saving Kazuma (for now) and have that big, fat, smelly noble do God knows what to her. Also, the kingdom repossessed a lot of things from Kazuma’s crew.
So they’re worse than “square one” at this point. They’re at “square -57” with how much debt they’ve all accumulated.
ENDING TO SEASON TWO: Things are starting to look up for Kazuma and his crew. They were able to abolish their debt, got the treason charges lifted, and they were able to gain back some respect around the village. So what better way to celebrate then to go on a bit of vacation. The gang decided to head off to another town for some rest and relaxation. Unfortunately, the town they spent their time off at is full of religious wackos. And what I mean by religious wackos, I mean WORSE than Jehova Witnesses, Evangelical Christians, and the Heaven’s Gate cult all rolled into one.
…Okay, I’m obviously embellishing here. I just really fucking hate all of those ones I just mentioned. This cult is so fucking annoying! At every turn they’re trying to convert Kazuma, Megumin, and Darkness into their fold.

Oh wait, it gets better! This cult worships the goddess Aqua! And of course our favorite idiot Aqua was using this to her advantage. That is until a priest didn’t believe her, starting a chain reaction with the townsidiots all leading up to them chasing Kazuma and crew out with pitchforks and fire. Apparently, Aqua did a big no-no by purifying the hot spring water and now it’s just regular water.
Unfortunately at that same time, a general to the dark lord was in area poisoning all of the water in this town. Yeah, this guy is serious trouble since he’s on a higher level than Wiz (back when she was working under the demon king). But he’s a slime and works with poison. In this world, Kazuma doesn’t stand a chance. Surprisingly, this battle went well (albeit Kazuma dying inside the slime), but we got to see Aqua at her baddest of ass. Now you’d think the town would be grateful to Kazuma and his team for ridding them of a demon king general. Hahaha, never trust religious nutjobs! They still found fault with Aqua purifying their hot springs and they were thrown out.
In the 11th episode (or second side-story), Kazuma thought he was meeting a new fan in town. So he regales her with tales of his expoditions to woo her. Turns out the girl is a new member of the local tavern and one of her jobs is to listen to useless adventurers to boost their morale. And this girl was totally not digging Kazuma. I think this hurt Kazuma more than all the times he’s died in this series.

MOVIE: We head off to the land where Megumin and Yunyun were born and raised. While there was some miscommunication into if the town and their families were in trouble to begin with, trouble sure found Kazuma and the gang once they arrived. Another general of the demon king ends up causing quite a stir in the town. Sylvia was extra hard to take down in this story. Just when you thought she was dead, she returns from death’s door and brings the poison slime from season two and the dullahan from season one to wreck havoc all across the land. Luckily, Kazuma, his crew, Wiz, Yunyun, and the rest of the townspeople were able to put an end to Sylvia and her cohorts.
But man, Kazuma got some really shitty deals in this movie. His trashy and perverted reputation isn’t any better. Megumin’s father wanted to kill him. Megumin’s mother locked Kazuma and Megumin in a room together in hopes of doing the nasty, was messed with by a chimera of two genders, and was killed in a gruesome way that even the angels had to throw up when they saw the state of Kazuma.
On a positive note, Megumin seemed to have grown a little with this adventure as she was even thinking of putting her explosive magic on hold and give a whirl at other options. But she still gave a giant explosion that’s worth 120 points.
Konosuba was amusing. Definitely worth a few chuckles! I know it won’t be for everyone as comedy in anime can often be hit-or-miss. But the combination of characters with many quirks, the animation, the setting, the tasks, and misunderstandings, you’ve got yourself an anime version of Curb Your Enthusiasm. So…yeah, not for everyone, hit-or-miss! But in the big five isekai animes, this one is a little more light compared to some of the others. Overlord can get quite gory. Shield Hero will anger any sane person to a point of madness. And Re:Zero is just a misery blanket! Konosuba is that light-hearted comedy where sometimes the main protagonist dies horrificly in battle, but will return like Kenny from South Park. So if Shield Hero and Re:Zero depress you, maybe you might need a break with the silly, zany antics of Kazuma’s crew in Konosuba.
Results may vary on your views of Aqua.
If you would like to watch Konosuba, the entire series is available on Crunchyroll. That’s the first season, second season, both OVA’s, and the movie in several different languages!
Okay, let’s pick our next Netflix, Crunchyroll, or Amazon exclusive!

Alright! An anime like Black Lagoon if it involved gay boys! Banana Fish time.

FEATURE: Every Crazy Aqua Face in KONOSUBA
This article written by Joseph Luster was originally published on April 30, 2020
Like any good story, KONOSUBA -God’s blessing on this wonderful world! starts out totally low-key and gradually intensifies from there. Alright, I can’t even pretend that’s remotely true, but if there’s one thing we’ve scientifically determined, it’s that Aqua’s already pretty crazy facial expressions get even crazier over time.
If you haven’t watched this delightfully ridiculous anime in a while, or at all — seriously, now’s a great time to start! — we’ve got the overview you’ve been dying to see: Every crazy Aqua face in KONOSUBA! These are in chronological order, starting with KONOSUBA Season 1, Episode 1, and moving all the way through the finale of Season 2 and including both OVAs. Truly, this gallery is a blessing on OUR wonderful world.
WARNING: There WILL be KONOSUBA spoilers, in that we WILL spoil all of Aqua's absurd reactions.
Aqua Ramps Up in KONOSUBA Season 1
How else should a goddess — useless or not — react after finding out the ridiculously embarrassing way our lead protagonist Kazuma died? Getting isekai’d may sound like fun, but not when it comes at the cost of your dignity. Aqua eventually composes herself, but it isn’t long until we’re treated to a season full of absurd reactions and unforgettable faces.
When the shut-in otaku you’re dealing with makes the one choice you didn’t expect:
When you find out everyone isn’t worshipping you exclusively:
When the all-powerful God Blow move fails to faze a giant toad:
When Kazuma tells you he just netted a cool million as a reward:
When you get busted for being Megumin’s explosive accomplice:
When you’re seconds away from using Kazuma’s tracksuit to kindle the fire:
When Kazuma completely KOs you with a door in a haunted mansion:
When you realize you’re the reason the mansion was haunted in the first place:
When you absolutely insist on eliminating the succubus Kazuma ordered for himself:
When some shut-in NEET drains your holy power so a two-bit lich can save the entire town:
When you definitely didn’t eat half of Kazuma’s yakisoba bun:
Aqua Knows KONOSUBA Season 2 is About to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.
When you support Kazuma but aren’t trying to join him in the slammer ...
… but you’re all about a good ol’ prison break:
When the court seizes your most prized possessions (seriously, I was gonna drink that well-aged booze!):
When Kazuma’s new snipe skill is all that stands between you and another toad’s belly:
Ah, yes, that all too familiar feeling:
When every little noise in a dungeon shaves a day off your life:

Random Kuro AU: The Cambion

I was having some late-night thoughts about the Kuro ladies (as is my wont), and realized there was one in particular who I’ve neglected and who hasn’t exactly received the best treatment at the hands of the fandom: Mathilda Simmons the nun.
Based on a couple of screenshots from the Hamlet OVA, some have speculated that Mathilda’s infamous roll in the hay with Sebastian resulted in her being pregnant with his child. This set my fic-writer’s brain churning. Let’s say there’s some truth to this theory. If she survived said pregnancy, what would the child be like, and what would become of this single mother? Thus the idea for The Cambion was born. (”camion” is the term used to refer to half-human, half-demon children, especially if the demonic parent was an incubus or succubus)
In this AU, Sebastian was genuinely attached to O!Ciel (in a platonic father/son sense), which compelled him to stay on Earth after eating the Earl’s soul. Out of compassion, the Midfords add him and the other Phantomhive servants to their staff. I know this is improbable, but make-believe land can have whatever you want. :P Around this time, a pregnant and desperate Mathilda shows up at the doorstep--as a single mom, she has nowhere else to turn, and strange, unnerving things have been happening to her. The other Phantomhive servants are shocked and disappointed in Sebastian, and Frances Midford reads Sebastian the riot act, making it clear there will be hell to pay if he doesn’t take responsibility and help Mathilda out. Sebastian is forced to confess that he’s actually a demon because even he can’t explain away all the obvious signs that Mathilda’s carrying a diabolical child. Mathilda is understandably furious and upset at being duped by the butler, but she resolves to keep their baby, and the other servants rally around her and (eventually) forgive Sebastian for deceiving them and devouring O!Ciel. Through circumstances that I need to figure out, it’s revealed that Mathilda has a latent aptitude for witchcraft; this, along with Sebastian’s efforts, enable her and the child to survive delivery. Babey turns out to be a son, who Mathilda names Eusebius (”pious”; he’s called “Eusie” for short). His character design is heavily based on Yato from Noragami. Eusie can be quite a handful; he’s a naughty little scamp with an unfortunate tendency to get into scrapes, much to his mother’s dismay. It takes a while for him to master his dark powers (he has a lot of “horsepower,” which is challenging to manage), even with Sebastian’s guidance, and his very presence tends to attract all manner of supernatural creatures to the Midford residence. As he matures, Eusie grows into a mighty warlock with a knack for necromancy. Sometimes, he can cruel and ferocious.

Most of the time, though, he’s a lovable dork.
Along the way, Mathilda would grow into a powerful witch in her own right and realize that she’s actually a lesbian (and maybe settle down with a loving wife). Though her relationship with Sebastian is rocky at first, they gradually come to stand on equal footing and put aside their differences for the sake of their son.
I have no clue what (if anything) I will do with this idea, but I thought I’d go ahead and write it into existence.

CanvasWatches: KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!
You know what was a surprisingly nice discovery? Crunchyroll has the english dub of the first… season? Cour? First ten episodes of KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (also known and henceforth referred to as KonoSuba) with the english dub. How magnanimous of the Dub-unfriendly service.
Konosuba was a pleasant follow-up to Kill la Kill (the review of which I’d been struggling with as I write this essay, so we’ll see if anything from that materializes). The network of Youtube Anime Reviewers had decided this was real good and funny and is worth the time. And, hey, I did have that free month courtesy of Twitch Prime, I might as well![1]
I thought it was fine! But the massive hype might’ve dragged it down. Comedy’s difficult. A lot relies on the unexpected, so if you prime viewers with “It’s really funny,” you raise critical expectations, which can undercut the weaker material.
Or maybe I’m too much of a comedic writer to get the full effect. Learned to read set-ups and such.
But I can recommend it if you have access and are interested. You won’t be disappointed.
Possibly another hurdle to my enjoyment is I went in intending to mine ideas for my own works. Spoofing RPGs and such is something I’ve long been wanting to set my skills towards, and it’s not always clear the best way to interpret mechanics.
Anyways, Konosuba has decided to parody the increasingly popular isekai[3] genre.
First ingredient: an average loser everyman for the viewer to project on. Filling the role is Kazuma Sato.[5] He goes out to buy a video game, decides to save a girl’s life from a perceived threat, and dies.
So, he needs to be reincarnated. As part of the typical Isekai set-up, he’s allowed to ask for whatever he needs to make himself massively overpowered.
So he takes Aqua, the sassy goddess offering him the choice.
This is the point where the typical formula breaks down. Kazuma has no notable advantages, and Aqua isn’t actually competent. Thus, we spend the 10 episodes stuck in the starting town of the pseudo-video game world.
So, when you throw someone into a video game or (less commonly) TRPG world, there’s the question of how to depict the actual GUI and game mechanics.
There’s the Sword Art Online and Log Horizon method, where the mechanics and their relationship with the world is unchanged, including the “players” being able to pull up a system menu to do… system menu things.
On the other end, we have Overlord, where the menu and other visuals vanish, and the tasks they accomplished must either be intuited by those translated into the world, or become part of their innate knowledge.
KonoSuba has everyone talk about the mechanics and such freely (in a tutorial NPC sort of way), but the menu has been replaced by an Adventurers ID, which shows stats and allows the adventurers to swipe and learn skills. Functional and easy for the viewer to accept.[6]
From this starting point, we have Aqua as the healer, and Kazuma as… an unclear role. He learns a Steal skill early, but he then starts learning magic, so he’s a bit of a Jack-of-all-Trades. The show’s not shy about the Master of None side of that, because the only decent stat our protagonist has is Luck, which counts just enough for him not to die and get the crucial things to fall in his lap.
Such crucial things include a Mage (who refuses to cast any spell except an excessive explosion spell) named Megumin, and a Tank-Fighter (who is… rather excited to take damage) named Darkness. Not the ideal companions, but functional.
But that also means we don’t have a straight Rouge, so I’m required to be salty about that.
Kazuma attempts to build a sustainable and fulfilling life, but the quests available are either above his capabilities or menial labor. Because life is more funny whenever things don’t go well for the hero.
The first three episodes are dedicated to establishing the setting and the characters, and aren’t actually that funny. Yes, there are things I can identify as attempts at comedy, but they’re modest attempts that don’t really build to a satisfying laugh. Kazuma’s attempt at straight-manning the shenanigans of his allies is restricted to complaining and feeling put upon, which flattens the funny moment by drawing attention to how wacky it’s meant to be.
Episode four, however, finally introduces a desperately needed element: a victim. In the form of a Dullahan who is up to his nonexistent neck with annoyance at Megumin casting a daily explosion spell on his castle.
His attempts at intimidation fall flat due to the apathy of our main party, and then Darkness steps in with her masochism, which bewilders him. He casts a death curse on Darkness, to her delight, and rides off to await Megumin to fight him in his castle.
Aqua then casually removes the curse, and our party forgets about the encounter.
A character desperately trying to do his job in spite of the ideocentricies of the main cast is much funnier than a character that just complains.
Comedy works better when it builds off what is established in narrative than over-relying on meta-knowledge and lampshade hanging. Those things have their place, but they work better as augmenting jokes or to speed up delivery, not as whole jokes themselves.
The next episode does a better job in that respect by introducing another guy with the same deal as Kazuma, except he’s a more traditional Isekai protagonist, and thus kind of a loser NEET. He also chose a massively overpowered sword instead of Aqua, and is doing better because of it.
Kazuma easily outwits him, steals the sword, and fences it. This sets a stronger character base for Kazuma: a genre savvy jerk willing to exploit the world around him for a quick buck. It turns him from a put-upon everyman into a jerk able to cause the same sort of chaos as the rest of his party.
Unfortunately, such moments are few and far between, as the rest of the season has Kazuma back to being a useless whiner. We do get closure with the Dullahan, which showcases Kazuma is actually pretty good at analytical thinking and tactics, but lacks the personal capabilities to actually fight.
The show then introduces an important character (a lich named Wiz) in a manner that clearly cut segments from the source material that, if shown in full, probably would’ve strengthened the rest of the story.
Instead, that time is used for an episode where Kazuma patronizes a succubus business that offers customized dreams. We watch an extended Q&A segment that raises uneasy implications about Kazuma’s predilections, then an uncomfortable encounter between him and Darkness which I don’t know how to fairly judge, since Kazuma is forcing Darkness into foreplay and intends to go further, but he thinks it’s a dream while Darkness doesn’t know that and thinks he’s being forceful, but she also could very easily overpower him and the show’s established…
Look, episode 9 should’ve been cut and I don’t wish to dwell on it any further.[7]
Anyways, the fall-out of that adventure is suddenly ignored as Howl’s Moving Castle (Dark Edition) lurches towards the town. Deary dear.
It belongs to the Dark Lord, though the exact nature of it and it’s controller is rather ambiguous. But it’s scary, powerful, and has immense defense. What will the town do?
Fortunately, Kazuma’s surprisingly powerful party and his tactical scheming allows them to stop it. However, in true villain lair fashion, the moving fortress starts a self destruct sequence. So now that needs to be addressed.
While searching the place to figure out how to deactivate it, Kazuma finds the corpse of the builder/driver with his diary.
Turns out, the guy was hired to build it, but thought the requirements were excessive and he didn’t really want to do the job. So he told his employers he needed a rare relic to power it, thinking it’d never get supplied.
The relic gets supplied.
So he builds the fortress, turns it on, and immediately loses control. The fortress goes on an unstoppable rampage as the builder is stuck inside. Oops. So he just kind of kept bluffing his way along.
Which tells us something crucial about this world: it runs on a narrativium fueled by malicious luck. Kazuma’s form of luck is not unique, wherein he is only fortunate enough for the next inconvenience to come along. He gets a rent-free manor not because he particularly deserves it, but because fate demands he be able to survive the winter. His companions are just competent enough to excuse their quirks. Even a second isekai protagonist finds success for only long enough to become a punchline.
It is a universe with a cruel sense of humor, and the greatest success goes to those who stumble uphill while trying to avoid detection.
It’s a world that rewards not the Aragorns, but the Rincewinds. So that’s fun.
This is best exemplified when Kazuma’s rousing success in saving the town results in him being arrested for at least property damage if not regicide.[8] And that is where the first 10 episodes end.
Now to wait for the season 2 and OVA dubs…
It’s a fine anime, but I think it’s been oversold. The premise is strong, the characters are fun, but the storytelling felt more like an attempt to hit the Greatest Hits beats. It might be worth the effort to read the Light Novel, as I suspect that might be the superior version in this case.[9]
Still, there are strong ideas, and a few things I’d aim to emulate. Especially the distinct leads. I do struggle with making a cast of diverse personalities.
If you enjoyed reading this review, please consider paying me. I have a patreon, a Ko-fi, and a burning desire to branch out into other projects but require investment to make it worth it.
We can’t all reincarnate into a fantasy world. Some of us need support to create them for ourselves.
Kataal kataal.
---
[1] My brother, meanwhile, has been binging Deltora Quest for… some reason… I know the books were pretty good for elementary school Canvas, while the succeeding series made less of an impression.[2] [2] Which is to say, bother Vulpin if you think it deserves a review. [3] Isekai (Japanese: 異世界, transl. "different world") is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy light novels, manga, anime, and video games revolving around a normal person from Earth being transported to, reborn, or trapped in a parallel universe. (Wikipedia)[4] [4] Yes, I actually used a footnote to cite a source and provide further information. Don’t get used to it. [5] I desperately want to make a Yakuza joke, but I got nothing. [6] The solution I devised for Penn & Pauper puts the Stats read-out on smartphones, with everything else being as it is in the normal world. IE, you have to manually equip weapons and armor and such. [7] Not just because my Mom is my only patreon patron. [8] They don’t specify if anyone was in the manor that got exploded. [9] Not that the Light Novels I’ve read thus far have been particularly strong. The writing of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Spice & Wolf felt very stiff on the other end of the translation process. Log Horizon, meanwhile, has meandering Light Novels with a poor sense of rhythm for page breaks.[10] [10] Also, the Mighty Santa Clara Library System refused to accept my Spice & Wolf books, so now I don’t know what to do with them.

Version 2.0 Update Info
I am currently working on a new version of NGoS that will be ready in roughly a month or so. I had originally planned on releasing this in March, but my schedule became too crowded and I didn't have as much time to devote to it as I had hoped.
The new update has numerous bug fixes, as well as new content and a few new features.
Bug Fixes
Bug Fixes are pretty numerous, mostly small stuff, but here are some examples
I defined a nymph specific skeleton to conclusively resolve feet deformity issues caused by having an out-of-date XPMSE skeleton
Fixed a lot of mismapped texture paths on meshes that caused them to show up solid purple.
A few meshes had the normal maps generated upside down. This is because OpenGL and Direct3D have different conventions for lighting direction, openGL is Y+ for up whereas Direct3D is Y- for up. On some of the older textures I generated normals for I accidentally baked them with the OpenGL directions. This causes areas that should look recessed to actually stick out. The most noticeable example of this is Kayellie’s Sword. The Glyphs on her sword are supposed to be engravings, but they actually look like they are protruding in most lighting.
Bodyslide generated body meshes had the wrong .tri file specified so it wouldn’t work with in game uunp morphs
The followers were not correctly using some of the Nymph Racial abilities which applied their effects through perks. This affected all of the followers to some degree (they didn’t get the default Nymph iron/steel protection) but it affected Kayellie and Mystra more, since they weren’t getting the Blended Nymph protection either. Mystra is a lot sturdier now that both of those are working (as she should be!)
Synne’s Flames of Sin was not correctly scaling.
This also includes the bug fixes from the hotfix updates I posted back in January, so you will only need to download 1 file. There are a few other minor bugs I have fixed, and I intend to go through and examine each and every part of this before I release the update to make sure I didn't miss anything.
New Features
As for new features, the biggest one is that I am adding “Ultimate Abilities” to each follower.
These are powers that they can only use once they are level 50 or higher, and these abilities are either a super powerful spell that can only be used once every 10 minutes, or a permanent upgrade to their basic fighting style.
These abilities have very elaborate shaders that I have put a lot of work into, special audioFX, and a voiceline that each follower will say when they cast it.
Right now I have two of these completed, Yulia and Synne. I will make another post to showcase these as well as give updates as I complete the other 4 follower ultimates.
The other big feature I am adding is preset placement. A lot of people were asking for this, as well as Nymph world encounters, so I ended up creating a kind of scavenger hunt with the Nymph presets.
There are 22 in total, randomly scattered all over Skyrim. There are more presets than this, but several of them ended up becoming crew members of the new follower, who I will get to next.
There are a variety of locations you can find them in, ranging from caves, ponds, rural inns to big city taverns, and they are placed according to their subtype.
You are most likely to find a Blended Nymph at a small Rural Inn, such as “Old Hroldan Inn”

The best place to find a Night Nymph is a major city, as you might expect. They are part of the normal populace, but fortunately the perception-altering magic of the Night Nymph doesn't work on the Dragonborn, so you should be able to spot them easily.

While the two previous subtypes generally stay dressed and live discreetly alongside humans, the other three subtypes are encountered naked in the Wilderness, in typical Nymph form.
Most of time you can find a Wood Nymph at a glen or grove, just like you would find a spriggan. Good thing Nymphii get along with spriggans!
The easiest place to find a Desert Nymph is in a Grotto type cave. Frequently they get in territory disputes with the local bears or horkers, but wildlife aren’t a match for the warrior prowess of your average Desert Nymph.
Since there are no jungles in Skyrim, and the few swamplands tend to be shallow and lack sufficient foliage to suit a Beast Nymph, most of them live in caves.
There are a couple Khajiit Nymphii that have claimed abandoned housing due to the particularly appealing treasures within: one has discovered a shack full of fish, while the other has found a house full of mice.
Each of these 22 Nymphii has been given a distinct class, combat-style, and spell-list, along with appropriate class-perks and the same leveling perks that the Nymph Followers possess. I tried to make each one of them unique, and they run the range of magic, stealth, and different styles of combat, so that none of them is quite the same. A few even have unique powers, but they will be harder to find!
New Content
The big addition is the inclusion of Nai’Yari, the new Desert Nymph Follower. I have described her already in other posts, so I won’t go into a whole lot of detail here.
The biggest thing I have to add is that I have made her crewmates into potential followers as well, and given them unique equipment and a special ability.
Currently she has 2 crew members that are camped out with her in Skyrim, a Desert Nymph and a Blended Nymph, but I am planning on adding at least one more, possibly two, a Bretoniic Nymph (!!!) and a Nord woman.
Besides the new follower I have already shown on this blog, I am also in the process of finishing up the lore updates that I have been working on.
This is pretty extensive, and I don’t think I will be able to include it all with this update. For now, here’s a teaser of some of the tidbits that have come up in questions I have received.
Nymphii have a mating selection process that is based almost 100% on some innate ability to sense the compatibility of any mortal's "magical essence" with the Nymph’s own magical composition.
Most Nymph subtypes have almost no interest in status, wealth, power, or any other kind of social advantages or material resources. A prince or a pauper makes very little difference to her.
The Nymph, like any humanoid creature, will obviously have some sense of aesthetics. However, since all Nymphii are inhumanly beautiful, regardless of the father’s appearance, this is not a major factor in her selection process. Whether a man is handsome or ugly is only relevant if they have equally compatible “Magical Essence.”
The result is that the Nymph may display strong preferences for one person over another that make very little sense, and her preferences may often seem incomprehensible to mortals.
For example, a Nymph may show an irresistible attraction to the one-eyed beggar of solitude, and be completely disinterested or even repulsed by the wealthy, charming, and handsome nobleman.
Two males of the same race can still have hugely different patterns of essence.
A Desert Nymph, whose composition generally favors Redguards, can be highly compatible with the essence of one Redguard man but may be totally incompatible with the essence of another.
Every mortal has a unique pattern of “Magical Essence” that a Nymph can intuitively read. Call this perception something like "Magical Pheromones" if that helps to explain it.
This pattern of “Magical Essence” is usually something only a Nymph can sense, though it may be possible to "read" a person's essence with powerful divination magic.
Every Nymph can perceive this essence this upon reaching maturity. It is part of the basic reproductive behavior of every subtype, even the Blended Nymph, for whom selection is not quite so necessary.
“Magical Essence" is contained primarily within mortal reproductive cells, male and female. Similar to how a Succubus obtains whatever it is that keeps her alive from semen, the Nymph requires the "Magical Essence" housed within functional humanoid reproductive cells in order to reproduce, which she eventually uses to start an arcane catalytic reaction that generates a new Nymph.
She can gather “Magical Essence” from both men and women, but due to the great difference in number of cells produced (billions of sperm vs. a single ova), it is almost impossible for her to obtain enough essence from a woman to reproduce. Her strong preference for males as mates is based on this fact, rather than on any anatomical reason.
Human males possess significantly more essence per cell to account for their shorter lifespans, and this helps to account for why Nymphii generally do not prefer Mer over Human except by specific Nymph subtype.
An egg will have thousands of times the quantity of essence per cell, but this is rarely enough to make a difference.
The only situation in which she might obtain enough essence from a woman would be a relationship with a Mer woman that persists for more than five centuries. It is not impossible, but very nearly so.
It is next to impossible for a Nymph to get pregnant the first time she has sex with any given person.
Most Nymphii are aware of this fact, and it contributes somewhat to the “promiscuous” reputation that the Nymph species has.
They are also generally immune to most sexually transmitted diseases that affect mortals, though with the exception of the Wood Nymph, they are not immune to magical diseases.
There may be a few diseases that only affect the Nymph which are carried by mortals...
Basically, there is very little risk or consequence for the Nymph if she chooses to indulge her desires.
The genes of the male are totally and completely irrelevant in terms of the composition of the new Nymph: she does NOT reproduce through genetic inheritance.
The “Nymph Generating Reaction” proceeds more quickly based on the amount of "Magical Essence" that she can use as building blocks: the more times she has had sex with the same person, the shorter her pregnancy will be.
A Nymph could conceive with a mate she has only slept with a few dozen times, but her resulting pregnancy will last decades.
Comparably, a Nymph who has been in a relationship with a Human man for his entire lifespan may have a pregnancy that lasts only a few weeks.
The building blocks of different individuals are wholly incompatible with each other and cannot be used to fuel the same reaction; each person has a unique variant of "essence" and she cannot further this reaction by sleeping with many different people.
A Nymph might be quite promiscuous normally, but once she has taken a mate she thus has a very strong incentive to be monogamous.
The essence of incompatible mates does not necessarily disrupt the reaction, but it does not provide any benefit either. Since a Nymph pursuing reproduction is always engaging in a deliberate and conscious decision, it does not make much sense for her to sustain an interest in other mates until after she has conceived.
There’s a lot more, but that’s part of what I consider the “essential” basics of Nymph reproduction, and it should help you get an idea of the life-cycle and motivations of the Nymph.
That’s all so far. I hope you look forward to it!

Darker games may employ an unlikeable jerkass who changes for the better or for the worse, and some may even use a Villain Protagonist, or someone not human and subject to Blue-and-Orange Morality - in either case, completely devoid of morals. The Handsome Lech is also a popular character archetype that is rarely portrayed negatively. Nice Guys and Troubled, but Cute characters who may be flawed or even somewhat jerks with a good heart can be found in games with a lighter tone. In general, the protagonists will be one of several specific character types, and only rarely if ever generic and faceless. There is a large crossover between Visual Novel and Porn with Plot because of the more story-oriented nature of Visual Novels. As a result, many are re-released with said content cut for the sake of reaching a wider audience. Many games tend to only have one sex scene at the end after hours of play, and in a large number of others, sex scenes can be disabled by menu options. Although the term "H-game," literally translatable as "pervert game," would suggest otherwise, the erotic content is sometimes about as important as similar content in an R-rated film.
