#OTD in 1014 – Battle of Clontarf | The Dublin Norse and the king of Leinster, with Viking allies from overseas, are defeated by Brian Boru’s army at Clontarf.
The bounds between Irish Legend and Irish Myth has often been blurred, especially as the retelling of heroic deeds has been passed on through generations. Brian Boru was no legend although his life deeds were legendary. He was very much a real man and was in fact the last great High King of Ireland and perhaps the greatest military leader the country has ever known. Brian Boru was born Brian Mac…

OTD in Music History: Immortal composer and virtuoso pianist Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) is born in Bonn, Germany... probably. Although there is no *definitive* record of the exact date of Beethoven's birth, the baptismal registry in the Catholic Parish of St. Remigius is dated to December 17th -- and the regional custom at that time was to carry out baptisms within 24 hours of births. Beethoven himself always claimed December 16th as his birthday. PICTURED: The handwritten address panel of an autograph note that Beethoven wrote and sent to a local elected official in ~1816/1817, regarding matters relating to settling the estate of his late brother, Kaspar van Beethoven (1774 – 1815), on behalf of his adopted nephew, Karl (1806 – 1858). The fierce five-year-long custody battle that raged from 1815 - 1820 between Beethoven and his hated sister-in-law, Johanna (1786 – 1869), is the stuff of legend. At great personal and financial expense and after many failed attempts, Beethoven ultimately succeeded in wresting custody of Karl away from Johanna, whom he considered to be an unfit mother and an “immoral woman." Unfortunately, Beethoven proceeded to drive his nephew crazy with his own highly eccentric “parenting” style, ultimately leading to Karl’s infamous failed suicide attempt in July 1826. When the police questioned Karl after he was discovered laying on the ground with a bullet wound in his head and a pistol clutched in his hand, the explanation that he offered was chilling: "My uncle has tormented me too much." Emotionally shattered by this tragic episode, the previously overbearing Beethoven immediately relented and finally allowed Karl to pursue the military career that he had long sought. The day after Karl left for his assignment, Beethoven drew up his own last will and testament. He bequeathed his entire estate to Karl, who would inherit it when Beethoven passed away just three months later.

UNCLE SAM-I-AM: Happy B-Day Dr. Seuss!

Many WW2 soldiers were young, newly-enlisted men with minimal formal education. To both impart info and improve morale, the Army Motion Picture Unit – headed by Hollywood director Frank Capra – created nearly two dozen "Private Snafu" training films that featured a bumbling new recruit who routinely breaks rules (SNAFU = Situation Normal All Fouled Up). Many "Private Snafu" shorts were written by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, voiced by Mel Blanc (infamous voice of Bugs Bunny), directed by animation legends Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng, and produced by Warner Bros. Studios.
RUMORS Military Training Film
Dr. Seuss's unique and imaginative style is evident in this "Rumors" training film. Pvt. Snafu chats with another soldier in the bathroom about "nice bombing weather."
It was a bright sunny day, air fresh and clean Not a rumor was stirring, except... in the latrine!
The rumor spreads rapidly, taking the form of hot air.
The hot air is blowing. A rumor is flowing!
The hot air fills giant balloons that then go through the "rumor mill" and become animated flying sausages that swarm the training camp, leading to the base shutdown/quarantine for "RUMOR-ITIS."
Balloon juice - it's phony, but it makes nice baloney! That's right. Exaggerate it. Stretch it. Multiply it. Now shoot off your face, And baloney is flying all over the place!
Even worse, Private Snafu ends up straitjacketed in a psych ward's padded cell #13, where he is tormented by Napoleon Baloney (Bolognaparte?). Lesson learned...

During this week in 1786, frontiersman Davy Crockett is born. Crockett is known for his escapades as a hunter, scout, and storyteller. He was a legend, of course, with plays and books written about his adventures even during his own lifetime.
“I’m that same David Crockett,” he once said of himself, “fresh from the backwoods, half-horse, half-alligator, a little touched with the snapping-turtle; can wade the Mississippi, leap the Ohio, ride upon a streak of lightning, and slip without a scratch down a honey locust; can whip my weight in wildcats . . . .”
Would he have lived longer if he and Andrew Jackson had not been at odds with each other? Crockett scouted for Jackson during the Creek War, but he did not share Jackson’s ruthless style. Tension between the two came to a head after Crockett was persuaded to run for pol itical office.
Crockett later remembered that his first opponent didn’t think “he was in any danger from an ignorant back-woods bear hunter.” But Crockett could entertain a crowd, and he sometimes wrapped up a stump speech by inviting the crowd to join him for a drink—leaving his opponent behind without an audience.
Obviously, he won.
Crockett was serving in Co ngress when Jackson was elected Pres ident. The two clashed, perhaps most notably over the Indian Removal Act. Crockett voted against the measure, calling it “a good honest vote, and one that I believe will not make me ashamed in the day of judgment.”
But Jackson was getting tired of the popular frontiersman who too often opposed him, and he personally recruited someone to challenge Crockett in 1831. The camp aigns that followed were messy. Crockett lost in 1831, won in 1833, then lost again in 1835.
You’ve likely heard how Crockett responded? “Since you have chosen to elect a man with a timber toe to succeed me,” he stormed, “you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.”
Many have speculated about his reasons for going to Texas. He was then separated from his wife and deep in debt. He was interested in good land and a chance to start over. He wasn’t trying to join the fight for Texas independence—at least not at first.
Perhaps the adventurous frontiersman couldn’t help himself once he arrived? By January 1836, he’d joined a volunteer corps, and he'd signed an oath to support Texas.
“I must say as to what I have seen of Texas it is the garden spot of the world,” he wrote his family, “the best land and the best prospect for health I have ever saw . . . . I am rejoiced in my fate.”
Did Crockett’s old animosity for Jackson seal his fate at this juncture? Or was he just itching for a fight? Crockett joined Colonel William B. Travis at the Alamo during those weeks, even though Sam Houston, a Jackson supp orter, wanted the Alamo destroyed.
Travis and Crockett would stay and fight. They would be among those kil led at the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
The horrific treatment of Alamo defenders gave Texans a new rallying cry: “Remember the Alamo!”—and it solidified Davy Crockett’s reputation as one of the most memorable frontiersmen of his day.

#OTD in Irish History | 29 October:
In the Liturgical calendar, today is the Feast Day of St Colman Mac Duagh. Born in Co Galway, he was the son of the Irish chieftain Duac. With King Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin of Connacht he founded the monastery of Kilmacduagh. The ‘leaning tower of Kilmacduagh’, is almost twice as old as the famous tower in Pisa. There is a legend that angels brought King Guaire to him by causing his festive…

OTD in Music History: Composer, conductor, and piano / organ virtuoso Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) is born in Germany. Nothing short of a living legend in his own time, Mendelssohn still remains one of the most popular and frequently performed composers of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's considerable compositional output encompass symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music, art songs, and chamber music. His best-known individual works include the "String Octet" (1825 -- written when he was just 16!) the "Overture To A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1826 -- written when he was just 17!), the "Italian" (1834) and "Scottish" (1842) Symphonies, the "St. Paul" (1836) and "Elijah" (1846) Oratorios, and his 1st Piano Trio (1839) and Violin Concerto (1844). Mendelssohn's collections of "Songs Without Words" are probably his most famous solo piano compositions; he also penned the melody for the ever-popular Christmas carol, "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!" Mendelssohn was also hailed for helping to spark revived interest among the concert-going public in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750), through his landmark 1829 performance of (a highly-edited and thoroughly rescored version of) the St Matthew Passion. One of the greatest and most influential conductors of the early 19th Century, Mendelssohn’s ten visits to Britain – during which he oversaw the premiere of many of his most important works – exerted a profound and lasting impact on the musical culture of that country. PICTURED: An 1844 autograph letter written and signed by Mendelssohn -- in surprisingly good English! -- to a female admirer, regarding various musical and social matters. Most notably, Mendelssohn describes celebrated Italian bass Luciani Mariani (1801 - 1859) as "his favorite singer.” Mariani created a number of important opera roles, including Oroe in Giacomo Rossini's (1792 – 1868) "Semiramide" (1823), Rodolfo in Vincenzo Bellini's (1801 – 1835) "La sonnambula" (1831), and Alfonso d'Este in Gaetano Donizetti's (1797 – 1848) "Lucrezia Borgia" (1833).

#otd in 1959 a star was born at Covent Garden. • Hersinging was exquisite; particularly notable were the sustained notes, followed by an octave drop. Her decorations were tastefully and justly conceived and beautifully executed. Arpeggios were delicate and lovely, trills were confident. But beyond this there was a meaning in everything she did. A singer who can make florid bursts in sixths with the flute heart-rending in effect has understood the secret of Donizetti's music." History Wednesday: W. B. Yeats is Born.
Tumblr media
William Butler Yeats, photographed by Alice Boughton ca. 1903. Source: Wikipedia.
OTD in 1865 William Butler Yeats, one of the greatest irish Poets of the 20th Century was born. One of the greatest forces of the Irish Literary Revival, along with Lady Gregory, Yeats’ early poetry brings to life his childhood fascination with the occult motives of Gaelic Legends, which he later renounced almost completely. He was awarded a well deserved Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. His love story with Maud Gonne, who refused him as a husband three times due to his non-violent position in the Irish struggle for independence, is as notorious as his poetry.
