Is Fullmetal Alchemist objectively the best anime? Probably Not. There are a lot of good anime so it’s hard to say for sure. But what it does have is an extremely low barrier of entry and a wide range of appeal. Especially with western audiences, it’s easy to get someone who has never seen an anime before to watch fma.
I personally think Beastars is an equally good and complex show, but it has a much higher barrier of entry. You have to be ready to watch a show about gay furry cannibalism sex, and getting someone to that point takes time.
