Alternatives to Squishmallow

So as many of you have probably already heard, Jazwares, the company that produces Squishmallows, is donating to charities that support Israeli soldiers and the IDF. They’re also supporting Canary Mission, which has been doxxing people who speak out against Israel. BDS hasn’t called for a boycott against them, but I can’t in good faith spend my money on their products, and I would strongly encourage everyone who enjoys plushies to really think long and hard about if you want to give your money to a company that’s helping support genocide!

But the holidays are coming up, and lots of us enjoy plushies and were fans of Squishmallow, and were planning to give Squishmallows to friends and family this year.

Fortunately, there are a number of great plushie companies out there, and I want to promote some of my favorites in the hopes that folks will get their plushie fix from a source that doesn’t side with Israel. So without further ado:

Fluffnest

Fluffnest got their start on Kickstarter a few years ago, and I adore the round shapes of their PuffPal plushies! My favorite is Pete the Possum, which is probably the best possum plush I’ve ever seen. I’ve also got a beautiful moth from their Kickstarter and I’ve been wanting their bats for ages. They also recently had a Kickstarter for an Animal Crossing-esque video game featuring their plushie characters and it looks fantastic.

Squishables

I can’t get over the plague doctor plushies. They’re so perfect and cute, and they’ve released other variations of them called Alter Egos, like a ghostly version, an alien, or a really sweet cottagecore one! They’ve got a ton of variety, but what I like the most are the fantasy plushies. There’s a lich! There are dragons and demons! Cryptids! Biblically accurate angels! A lot of really fun stuff!

Also they do a lot of great charity work! Right now they’re doing an auction for the Food Bank of New York City.

AfternoonFika

AfternoonFika is a very small business of only three people, but their plushies are extremely cute. They tend to sell out fast, so I recommend following them on social media to stay on top of any restocks! They recently released a line of dinosaurs that are precious, and of course I love their iconic cactus cat and cinnamon bun bunny.

Jellycat

Jellycat has been around since 1999, so they’re the oldest of these companies. They’ve got great designs, a ton of variety, and a lot of their plushies are made to be cuddled on and not just displayed. All three of my tiny nephews sleep with a different stuffed dog from Jellycat. My mom has a sun and several succulents that she uses as decorations. There’s a little something for everyone who enjoys plushies!

If you have any other favorite companies I haven’t mentioned, feel free to add on! I’ve enjoyed Squishmallows for a while now and I’m sad to see their leadership coming out on the side that’s committing war crimes on a daily basis, but this is a good time to discover new favorite plushie companies! And remember, money speaks loudly. Even if BDS hasn’t called for a boycott of Jazwares, it sends a message when sales start dropping for companies that support genocide. It’s a small thing, but the little things we do can add up!

i sometimes feel like the community can give allos the wrong idea of what it is and feels like to be asexual or aromantic, and especially both.

like i feel when searching for perspectives you either find that being aroace is the greatest thing that ever happened it's so cool and swag or that's it's utterly miserable. when it's more then often both. it's a big package of good and bad.

it's part of you which means it's something so beautiful and powerful and right and wonderful and that's something to be proud of.

on the flip side as a romance favorable aroace person, it hurts like shit. i know that i won't feel like other people. i want to seek out a relationship but i know i'll never love them the way that they deserve and the way that any other person could love them because i will never feel romantically attracted to them. i feel the need to disclose this to people because i don't want to hurt them. i don't want to be a shitty person just for trying to find a relationship.

i've seen allos online claim how Easy it would be to be aroace. oh how they wish they were aroace no more crushes no more problems.

they don't realize that society is so romance and sex focused that you are forgotten and left to the side. and that even your own community might not support you if you aren't perfect. they fail to realize that people around you won't believe you or care. that society tricks you so you feel like you're missing out on things. being queer means that conservatives hates you and even if you don't feel attraction to anyone they still want you dead. like it is not all sunshine dragons and rainbows i swear to god.

It’s really good, and the religious imagery is neat, and it’s so good. It’s really gender, it gets the gender feelings.

Jon focused, introspection. I love Jon focused introspection.

Also, I won’t spoil it, but it’s got a moment near the end that I love so much, and it’s just… this fic really tackles a lot of things in TMA and a lot of things with soulmate AUs and makes me Very Horrified.

So, for realistic depictions of depersonalisation, Jon themed musings on humanity, and Stranger!Jon propaganda… this is the fic for you!

The Bird of Paradise (comic, 47 chapters) by lady_libertine

This was required reading for a different fic. It’s about Jon meeting Odin, Dionysus, and Lucifer during the Unknowing, and getting slightly magical therapy that helps him fix his problems. It’s actually pretty good. Very long, though. And not described (unless it is through alt text).

Cry For Me (words 4,827) by BusinessCasualAura

(who is apparently my mutual, i keep forgetting this)

Okay, so this series is like, so sad. It’s so bloody sad. It starts between s3 and s4 (getting off to a Sad Start), continues through s4 and s5, ends in like, the worst way (for the characters). It’s so bloody good, and the Upton House portion is like… top 2 Upton House fics.

can’t be helped (words 5,308) and rituals (words 8,492) by doomcountry

The first fic is set in season 4, but canon diverges, and both Martin and Jon fall fully to their patrons (i.e. Jon becomes a lot more evil and inhuman, Martin fulfils more of the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder).

The second fic is set after the first fic, with Martin (less lonely) trying to see if there’s any Jon left in the Archivist. First fic focuses pretty equally on Jon and Martin, but in separate storylines, second fic is from the Archivist’s POV, but focuses on Jmart.

stopgap prophecy (words 16,686) by prismatical

It’s about humanity and monsterhood and “is it right to die bc living will hurt people” and change, and I love it. It’s so good. And Jon’s narration is wonderful, and the climax is just, it’s amazing to read, it plays out in my head all the time. Set in season 4, post-MAG 146.

Jon reads a truth telling Leitner during season 4, and then people have heart to hearts with him. It goes. It certainly goes.

It’s just, argjhhh it’s so painful. Might be my favourite tma fic. Go read it. Right now.

This is a really good post-MAG 154 fic, and it’s got this cool original character, and it’s got this absolute BANGER of an ending that never gets elaborated on, it’s fine i’m fine and yeah. Favourite post-MAG 154, easily.

in the chillest land and on the strangest sea (words 19,632) by imperfectcircle and raven (singlecrow)

I’m pretty sure this is one of those fandom classics. Based on the amount of comments, it’s pretty well known, but I enjoyed it, so… it’s about Hope as an entity. It’s in the format of Daisy telling Jon a story while the latter is staying at the Scottish Safehouse. The story is from season 1 onward but the framing device is post-MAG 159 pre-MAG 160. It’s got great moments that live in my mind rent free.

Set immediately after MAG 160, Jon reflects on his humanity, the loss of it, and the relation of that to Jane Prentiss, and also biblical themes. The title is the bible quote: “Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.”

Pretty much exclusively focuses on Jon. Stream of consciousness ramble, yknow.

This is my favourite of the 40 fics Citrus wrote while s5 was coming out. It’s a conversation after Upton House. It’s titled after a line from Hamlet. Frankly I don’t think I need to say any more.

Time travel fix it fic, time travel fix it fic! To be completely honest, I don’t really like time travel fix it fics, but this one is an exception. s5!Jon basically replaces season 4 Jon, and still has issues, and they focus on multiple characters, and there’s so much getting angry at Jonah Magnus — if I’m being honest, sometimes I just read this fic and go through the content warnings to see which chapters probably mention Jonah Magnus and read those, because the handling of Jonah Magnus is like, thank you. I love it.

Focuses on multiple characters, but Jon’s the main character. Also, diverges before MAG 187, and it was being written pre-finale. It’s still ongoing.

rewind. play. eject. (words 39,543) by boredshyandbi

Jon’s stuck in a timeloop of MAG 39, and it’s heartbreaking to see him every time try to fix things, try to save Sasha and Martin and Tim, and there are Lines. There are Lines. That stick out in my brain. Do you think I’m ever going to be okay about paperclips again? No! I’m not. It’s another exception to the time travel fix-it rule, but only because it’s got... a different plot. And it’s just that good.

Countdown to Extinction (words 131,464) by starspangledbread

Another exception! Tbf though, it’s another different one.

First fic isn’t quite monster4monster4monster jongerrymart, but it’s got the Vibes. Jon commits petty crimes and also major crimes like Multiple Kidnappings, uh and then the second fic is just. Wow okay that’s a tonal difference. Dealing with repercussions…

to second your answer, i fucking LOVE aromantic charles and each fic surrounding that premise is an absolute treasure. it really is about the all-consuming and wholly devoted love, and how POWERFUL that is, no matter what form it takes. it's about charles feeling like there's something wrong with him/like he doesn't deserve edwin because he can't give edwin what he needs, only for edwin to assure him that romantic or not, he as never felt as loved by anyone else as he is loved by charles. it's about the realization that there is nothing "lacking" in the way you feel, even if it's not quite the same as everyone else. and yeah it really is about not knowing what the fuck romantic love even is anyway because really WHAT THE FUCK IS IT

in an effort to give an answer that is more than just me parroting your answer but with more words, i also absolutely ADORE all the headcanons people have come up with for the boys' orb forms, and the many wonderful fics that have been born from the idea of them caring for each other in those forms!

13. favorite onscreen case:

i've said it before and i'll say it again, i LOVE the case of the two dead dragons so incredibly much. not only is it fun getting to see the boys and crystal have the time of their lives scaring the shit out of twitchy ritchie, it's such an excellent exploration of interpersonal relationships, both between the agency crew and with the side characters in the episode (shelby, maren, ritchie, the dead jocks, etc.)

I HAD A THOUGHT

so I'm abrosexual.

today I was feeling bisexual for the first time IN AGES. like you don't understand how rare that is for me. I messaged this to my friend, who was busy at the time.

then, I had to go out into the real world to do an errand. sad, I know.

when I got home, I messaged my friend again. "home safe. feeling less bisexual by the minute."

my friend then answered back, saying "what does that even mean?"

and I was like, oh my gosh, people won't understand what that means. BUT THEN I HAD A THOUGHT. A METAPHOR THOUGHT.

this is how people usually explain abrosexual:

it's similar to being bisexual, in that it's fluid. but sometimes you can be pan, or ace, or only attracted to one gender, etc. it's like genderfluid but for sexuality.

which is a good explanation! it is! but I thought of a better one.

imagine you've been cursed. (by an evil wizard or fae trickster or old god, whichever you prefer. the origin of the curse is not the point.) (i am not at all saying being abrosexual is a curse, this is just a metaphor to explain it.)

imagine that the curse is that your tastebuds are ever-changing. y'know how like when you get older, you enjoy new things, or maybe hate things you used to love? imagine that's what's happening to your tastebuds, on a daily basis.

you crave different things. sometimes you crave ice cream, or vegetables, or both, or nothing at all.

it's infuriating, because you can't control it.

imagine you have a favorite food. one from before the curse, something you've loved since you were young. let's say it's Reese's peanut butter cups.

HOWEVER. this spell has ruined your tastebuds. for a while now, you've only been craving peanut butter. you stare longingly at chocolate, for you love it. but when you try to eat it, it just doesn't taste right. the joy isn't there. in the past, it has been the opposite. you crave chocolate, but not peanut butter. or even sometimes, you crave nothing at all.

but one shining morning, you wake up craving both. it's a euphoric moment. you say to yourself, I'm going to have a peanut butter cup today. I'm going to enjoy it so much.

but before you can, you get busy. have stuff to do. before you know it, when you're finally done, you think about that peanut butter cup again. you head to a vending machine. then, as you punch in the numbers, you realize something. your craving is dwindling. your stomach drops. you know if you don't hurry, it won't taste good. it will simply be bland. you put the food to your mouth, and - it's too late. you've stopped enjoying chocolate the way you could have. you die inside, a little.

in this metaphor, craving chocolate is attraction to women. craving peanut butter is attraction to men. craving reese's is attraction to both (feeling bisexual.) craving nothing is attraction to no one (feeling asexual.)

this is a horrible metaphor as it equates being asexual/aromantic to not having taste, which is simply untrue. aspec ppl have great taste! they can still have attraction in many ways, and can enjoy things like food, fashion, dragons, and unicorns.

BUT I think it gets the point across.

being abrosexual is like craving different things in an unpredictable way. sometimes it can be really frustrating, and complicated, and downright confusing. a lot of internalized phobia and imposter syndrome is involved.

for me, I consider myself Sapphic, as I love women very much. they're incredible. however, I don't always feel attraction to them the way I'd like to. usually, I find myself drawn more to men, even though I could never really see myself dating one (that isn't fictional.)

so yeah, for anyone wondering, I hope this helps.

I mostly worship the Legendaries/Mythicals, and use Pokémon spirits in my practice for help.

Worship and working alongside are two sides of the same coin.

I celebrate the Wheel of the Year, but from a non-Wiccan perspective.

I use all sorts of oracular tools in my work. Tarot, oracle decks, runes, dice, charms, pendulums, etc.

I practice things like astrology, I'm not very good at it.

I do not follow the Threefold Law.

I believe deeply in animism.

I keep a few physical shrines group-dedicated, and use other methods for personal shrines.

I partake in daily worship.

I perform "entity juggling", where I pick and choose entities based on need, want, or their presence.

I am not Wiccan. I am a chaotic eclectic pagan.

The WOF Love Interest slander has made me think about it. What would be my ideal love interests for each Wings of Fire protagonist?

Clay - Keep him without a solid one, he can have minor flings but honestly I like how the books kept him single and made it pretty clear Peril’s crush was one-sided. I don’t personally headcanon him as aromantic or anything I just think him not having a love interest is more useful and interesting to the character dynamics and the story than having one would be.

Tsunami - As I have previously stated, pathetic malewife ( gender-neutral as usual for the bisexual queen ) or equally as tough dragon who has a soft spot for Tsunami and she has one for them. I like how Riptide is the first person Tsunami meets but not in the way the books portray it, it shouldn’t just be “first male of the same tribe as her now they are dating” I feel “this was the first person I felt I could relate to on all the things I never knew why I did and you taught me so much but never used me for being a princess or forced me to be a certain way thank you”

Glory - Okay girlboss and her hitman bodyguard is cute, kinda reminds me of Yor and Loid Forger in a way but also the age gap has to go Tui how’d you fuck up the timeline that bad 😭😭 I don’t actually like how Deathbringer is written either I kinda would want more of a serious to outsiders but playful slowburn when alone with eachother. I feel like Glory wouldn’t actually get with anyone until she’s an adult because she would be so focused on her career BUT GOD GET A MAN OR A WOMAN OR WHATEVER IDC WHO IS YOUR AGE PLEASE DONT MESS UP THE TIMELINE AND IMPLY STRANGE AGE GAPS IT RUINS SHIPS

Starflight - Tbh… I love him and Fatespeaker nerdy quiet boyfriend and his bundle of energy nerdy girlfriend, just crank it up to 11 I want more I don’t care if she’s annoying it’s fun I just wish they did more with it it was so cute :(

Sunny - The aromantic queen.

Moonwatcher - Everytime I heard her worrying about “oh gosh oh me should I choose the nice funny guy who is nothing but kind to me or the nasty racist man who keeps telling me who hates me because I’m a nightwing” makes me want to rip my hair out. If you can’t tell love triangles are often poorly written and both choices are not equal. Solution: Give Qibli more apparent flaws and maybe don’t make Winter dragon racist it makes the bad boy character a lot less of a bad boy and more of “why are you giving this man the time of day Moon he hates you” energy. That was a rant and a half but basically balance it out more and in the end I don’t want her to decide. She can have some romance drama on the side but I feel like she could never choose, or she could go poly or open relationship but who knows. If I could throw Qibli and Winter in the love interest trash bin I would give Moon a quiet gf with an interesting backstory or something like that, someone who doesn’t have a bombardment of thoughts and is calm and peaceful and Moon can just chill with her. Or honestly if Arc 2 wanted to focus on plot more, discard love interest for Moon until Arc 3.

Winter and Qibli - Stated before. Honestly would prefer if Winter didn’t have a love interest at all and worked through his own issues with his friends where as I’m a little more open to Moon and Qibli personally I’m not the biggest fan. I think Qibli is another character like Clay that I can’t see any story reasons to actually give a love interest until after Arc 2.

Peril - Realize she doesn’t need Clay to love her to be worth anything and slowly come to realize to learn to love herself, maybe she gets to be with someone as an adult but after lots of healing and being able to separate her worth as a person from a partner’s love. <3

Turtle - I like how he has a crush on Kinkajou and how Anemone kind of ruins it but I don’t want it to go anywhere and I want he and Kinkajou to have more discussions about it and for them eventually decide not to get together. Or something like that I can’t really see Turtle with anyone but I liked that storyline.

Blue and Cricket: I actually really enjoy this ship and I want them to be happy, make it less sudden though Tui I stg they went way too fast but I do enjoy pathetic little boy x nerdy girl it is a very cute dynamic and made arc 3 tolerable in the first half for me.

Sundew: No complaints. Willow is amazing, I just wish she had more of a role in the story.

Snowfall: I think she and Lynx are cute but they do also work as friends, I don’t think she needs a love interest. Single girlboss.

Luna: I like Luna and Swordtail a lot actually Arc 3 had pretty good romance for Wings of Fire standards, I just wish it was fleshed out more before Luna’s POV book. Her thoughts and memories of Swordtail also made her book tolerable I’m ngl the plot was lacking but Luna and her awesome thoughts and mind and memories was super cool!!

I could also include the humans, the winglet characters and Darkstalker but I don’t want too!! Fuck the humans I hate them!!! Also I acknowledge I didn’t include any MLM ships in here at all but that’s kind of just because most male characters have pretty solid ships already which are primarily straight, which is sad that there isn’t a lot of LGBT rep in Wings of Fire besides Sundew x Willow and side characters Pineapple x Jambou(? He is so irrelevant I forgot his name help 😭 ) and arguably Sky/Peril. Maybe after Winter works through his angst he can get an emo boyfriend that would be my heart and soul.

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

I think William Bush/Horatio Hornblower - I went into the fandom having only seen the show and read the first book, and therefore was fully on board with both Pellew/Hornblower and Archie/Hornblower but was not quite certain on Bush's having any feelings for Hornblower outside of firm friendship. Aaaaand then I started Lieutenant Hornblower. That man took one look at gangly, mournful Hornblower and lost his everloving mind about him. And who can blame him? So I guess you can say C.S. Forester himself changed my mind - the coyness around the Kingston Debauch sealed the deal. Now I'm more fully on the Bush/Hornblower train than I am on the Archie/Hornblower one.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Oh I just answered my #1 baby boy Anders, so I will have to come up with another! I think William Laurence. He goes from being this incredibly by-the-books, not quite hardhorse but very exacting Naval Captain in the first book, to committing treason and temporarily defecting to France by the fourth. And then, because he holds himself to the most absurd standards, he returned to England to be put to death; he fully believes that he both did the right thing committing treason, and is entirely deserving of being hanged for it. Laurence, babe. Please for the love of god get yourself some therapy. (This is apparently Tharkay's job)

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

I'm gonna answer this two ways: a trope that appears in canon that will always catch my heartstrings, and a trope in fanworks that I gravitate to every time. First, canon tropes and themes: Loyalty and love. I think this is what pulls me to the Boat Book series like Aubreyad and Hornblower. I really love it when characters are dedicated to each other, and when it's well done it will make me insane. Patrick O'Brian does it incredibly well. Jack and Stephen are unwavering in their loyalty to each other, of course, but so are the Surprises to both of them, and Sophie to both Jack and Stephen, and Stephen to Diana. (I also consider Jack loyal to Sophie, and Diana loyal to Stephen, just not perhaps chastely so.) And in fanworks: It's very funny as an aromantic-spec staunch relationship anarchist, but I love love love a WELL DONE soulmate AU. I think they can be a fascinating look into the world, and how something like that would change society. I have soulmate AUs rotating slowly in my head for Hornblower and Aubreyad, and for Dragon Age, if I ever convince my brain to stop thinking about the Napoleonic War. I also love HDM/Daemon AUs. I think everyone should have an independant, sublimating portion of their soul that can talk back to them and takes the form of a Beaste which you can cuddle.

Bracket H thoughts:

Both of the first ones were good so I chose "Attack at the Wall" out of personal preference.

Darla had a point, people do love things that are "Big and Loud." The reprise is better with the context of the original.

...I know everyone is gushing in the notes about "I'm the Villain in My Own Story" and "Playing With the Big Boys Now" isn't the best villain song in that movie, but I honestly enjoyed it more? Probably because of a combination of nostalgia and *Megamind voice* PRESENTATION! Also probably doesn't help that I haven't watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend in forever.

"Marley and Marley" is a darkly awesome bop.

"Molasses to Rum" is such a weirdly cool callout of Northern hypocrisy that I voted for it, but I was really tempted by "When the Chips Are Down" because I do think that one is better musically.

After much deliberation, I voted for "One Step Ahead" because I am a sucker for the homoerotic power of swordfighting and calling someone "old friend". Also the soundtrack version of "Made in America" is better than the live performance because everyone was kind of sick when they did the Black Friday proshoot and it really shows.

The lyrics of "Why We Build The Wall" are so good, damn.

"Descole's theme live version" just sounded better to me, IDK.

Oh my god "Countdown." Dawn's singing. The hidden countdown in the lyrics. "The tick-tock of my flintlock's hangfire." The Western guitar. Vote for "Countdown," PLEASE. Everyone needs to hear Dawn sing right now.

"I Love You (As Much As Someone Like Me Can Love Anyone)" doesn't even seem that evil to me, that's just an aromantic trying to clarify the nature of her relationship with her fuckbuddy (joking). Anyway, try watching the actual Omega Flowey boss fight and tell me "Your Best Nightmare" doesn't deserve the win.

...I love "The Ballad of Sara Berry," but "God-Shattering Star" is one of the few redeeming factors of the rushed clusterfuck that is the final stages of Verdant Wind*. Anyway it's still a really badass song with a badass title.

"Friends in Low Places" is a kickass rock number. Also why are FernGully's villain songs so weirdly horny.

how i feel about hiccstrid, a ship i used to mildly enjoy until it got so overwhelmingly heteronormative

so obviously. i’m aromantic asexual, more specifically i’m apothiaroace and shipping very quickly gets dodgy for me the first few years of httyd i thought hiccstrid was fine. i was also 7 so it’s not like i had much of an opinion on romance, but regardless. it didn’t bother me and i liked their relationship* (< note the asterisk) entering 2016 - 2017 i started to become... hesitant, rtte was doing more romantic stuff involving them and it ... i wasn’t a Huge fan of it y’know? i think romance in shows is annoying when it’s all about dragons n shit when i found out that they started dating in blindspot (which i didn’t watch until 2022) it. urked me for some reason i never really thought of hiccstrid as explicitly Romance but more just oh yeah friends but they can kiss ig idk  coming into 2019 i started to really not like hiccstrid, esp after seeing what they were doing with it in modern years. it was all so heteronormative, hiccup is the boy astrid is the girl, he’s her husband she’s his wife type of thing (plus i started hcing hiccup as aroace)  when i watch how they portrayed hiccstrid in httyd 2010 compliant material (first film, shortfilms, riders + defenders) it’s fine. sure i’m PERSONALLY averse to kissing but i can deal with it because the romantic aspect isn’t absurdly obvious and defining their relationship. they can talk to eachother outside of boyfriend girlfriend but when i see how their relationship is portrayed post 2013 it’s...... bleh? especially those last few years of the main franchise (2017 - 2019). it feels like they lost all spunk to their relationship and only exist to kiss eachother and stare allosexually into eachother’s eyes when i think abt hiccstrid in the early days i’m like ya :) they’re fine together :) but that’s because it didn’t change how they interact with eachother. they could be normal, banter and get silly not to mention what it did to characters and plots. shit from snotlout not trusting the two to astrid completely losing her edge and having to rely on her husband for everything (do NOT make me go into a thing abt astrid’s character and her acting like that likely due to trauma but also her softening up does not help her character) hiccstrid i like when it’s just the two being close and stuff, it’s nice seeing them get along so well and whatnot which is why i think they work so well as a qpr. whenever you have the dating element it fundamentally alters their relationship in a way that makes both less interesting also the shippers are some of the most heternormative and amanormative people i’ve ever seen my god goodbye

Engage Drip Marketing: Alear

Edit: Don't know why but my brain farted and thought the characters name was spelled Elear. Oof.

Oh me, oh my. Oh yee, oh ha! A new Fire Emblem’s been revealed at long last, and it seems like we’re already getting drip marketing. So, I feel like posting my thoughts about it.

Alear

Their design… is a little silly, but otherwise fine. The fandom came around on Corrin, it came around on Byleth, it’ll probably come around on our new minty fresh protags as well. And aside from their hair color, I actually dig both of their outfits quite a bit.

As for FireEmblemJP’s tweet about them, here’s a rough translation…

The main character of this work is the divine dragon "Alear". (CV: Hiroshi Shimono, Aya Endo) A thousand years ago, after the Fell Dragon was sealed. I was asleep in the sacred land "Ritos", but one day I suddenly woke up. I can't seem to remember who I am because I've been asleep for so long.

So, we have another amnesiac Avatar. I actually think it’s a good thing. The player is a stranger to Elyos, so it makes sense for the avatar to reflect that, as cliche as it may seem. Another thing that caught my eye was a name for the Holy Land, Ritos. I don't know if this’ll be the English name or not, and I can’t seem to find anything the name would be a reference too. Either way, I feel this confirms the game starts out in the Holy Land.

Another tweet says…

You can choose from two appearances for the main character. The default name is called "Alear". Red and blue hair and eyes are impressive.

Well, it seems like customizable appearances are out the window. Figured as much considering the cutscene quality. Chances are the theories about joycons determining hair are also not gonna pan out. I’ll admit, I was curious to see how Alear would look with my green and pink joycons, but oh well.

Finally, we have the tweet detailing Alears class and crit animation…

Alears initial class is "Dragon Child". A descendant of a dragon clan that has lived since ancient times, and can use divine dragon swordsmanship.

So, it seems the avatar is sword locked, at least at the start. Apparently they use a special school of swordsmanship though. Ordinarily, I’d assume their “descending from a divine dragon” bit was similar to how various cultures have claimed their royal families descended from gods throughout history, and just that. However, in the ui his class is listed as “Dragon Child/ Dragon”, implying wyrm slayers will deal bonus damage. This makes me wonder if Alear will be able to transform into at all later on, perhaps via promotion or a story event. If so, I'm eager to see their dragon form. 

Now before I finish this post, I wanna examine the crit animation clip, and what will likely be the game's first map. It seems to be a small map, taking place in a valley outside. We’re up against some corrupted, all ax users. The twin characters are green units, and Alear and Vander seem to be rushing to their rescue. However, the top half of the map is completely empty. As such, I think after you talk to the twins and recruit them, more enemies will teleport in, and give you tutorials on mage and healer units.

Considering there's a cutscene where Framme and the others seem to see corrupted for the first time, I think the story will be that once Alear wakes up, they and the others will journey outside the castle. After some brief introductions and worldbuilding, the corrupted will arrive to become fodder for tutorials.

So, all in all, Alear seems to be a pretty basic but functional Avatar. And while I don’t hate them as much as others, I’m still pretty lukewarm.  Hopefully their swordsmanship will stay flashy, and they’ll transform later on. That’s all I’m really hoping for. As an aromantic individual, I find shipping the units with each other more enjoyable than shipping my own character with one, so the Avatars of the series will never really be a big deal to me. 

Now, what I’m really excited to learn about are the other characters.
