[Alright. This is the THIRD time I’ve tried to post this. Let’s hope it works. Anyways,
I actually started on this a couple of days ago, but I read Part 4 Chapter 2 last night and it just resonated SO hard with the whole idea I was goin for that I just dropped the ambiguity and directly correlated ‘em
Is it concerning that the whole deal there was so unbelievably REAL to me? Like, like DUDE. The concept of entering a situation so strenuous that you lock yourself into some incomprehensible space in your head. And, AND LIKE, and the recollection of seemingly random childhood memories that connect to the complicated things you’re feeling and the phrase repetition and the realization of years and years of frustration with the world and the PHRASE REPETITION?! DID THEY WRITE THIS FOR ME?! IS THIS LITERALLY ME?!
The whole thing read like an EVA breakdown scene, and the thing is I WAS blasting EIIRP while drawing this and I WAS just going to link the song itself but this AMV came up in the search and it was just so EXCELLENT that I had to link it instead. Go check it out it’s beautiful man.

One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest should join the “you’re missing the point by idolizing the protagonist” media list.

never getting over harding as a character. fym “for myself? guilt. shame. fear. self-belittlement. i discovered at an early age that i was— shall we be kind and say different? […] it wasn't the prac-tices, i don't think, it was the feeling that the great, deadly, pointing forefinger of society was pointing at me— and the great voice of millions chanting, 'shame. shame. shame.’ it’s society's way of dealing with someone different." huh? how tf am i supposed to feel about that? normal? get outta here

I hate myself because I can't be me. I always end up mimicking someone else. I also feel like I'm so similar with cheswick from ofotcn. the way I can't do shit myself because I'm not the strong one. I always end up people pleasing because I can't let them leave. even if I understand that those who will see my real face and leave aren't the real friends. but with people pleasing I myself, the way I talk, the way I think, my political position is too slightly affected by them. I mean my previous fp was making fun of being "problematic" and of course I was too. then I left him (he betrayed me) and then I was left with several online friends. and one of them wasn't american, he was from western asia but he was very american-braiwashed. I mean bro was concentrating on american issues so bad instead of concentrating on his own country's issues. and of course he was against being "problematic". and of course then I became one too (not that my previous fp was pro problematic meaning pedo, zoo, slurs n shit. it was more about "cultural appropriation" kinda problematic and other dumb accusations). and I have this old oc which is a white rasta gal. so this friend of mine kept telling me he's not leaving because he likes me about my the most twisted confessions (blood kink for example) and I didn't believe him. so once I just randomly decided to redraw this rasta gal to see how he reacts (I often did tjis even with confessions to prove my point that I'm an unlovable disgusting guy when they leave after one of them). and he said it is wrong (white rasta gal) and left. (he's never thought about the existence of cultural APPRECIATION because my gal wasn't wearing a blackface or mocking black culture. she came to this culture when she was at her lowest and it helped her get better) therefore he's confirmed that it's enough to stop people pleasing and start doing what you want (WITHIN THE FUCKING LAW EVEN) and there us no unconditional love for me

I feel like my almost instantaneous attachment to Chief is in part due to the hyper specific concept of both being a POC and having an anxiety-based disorder. Cuz like let’s think. Is it REALLY paranoia if you’re personally aware of the fact that both historically and in current time, people just deadass DON’T LIKE YOU?? Is it REALLY overreacting if you realistically can’t fully trust the majority of the people around you?? At what point can I reason with myself that my brain is inherently dysfunctional and is constantly in panic mode and when can I acknowledge that the reason I’m terrified of something or someone because they might ACTUALLY hurt me?? Who am I supposed to trust knowing that the people societally put in place to protect DO NOT want to protect me?? Can I stay inside forever?? Can I lock myself in one place and never leave again?? Wait goddamnit ethic parents don’t play like that I’ve gotta actually have a life.
Maybe his character wasn’t meant to be read in such a way, and regardless it’s not like he’s gonna resonate with me completely cuz like. I’m black. We’re comin from different perspectives here. Idk what I’m sayin man he’s just my guy and I love him and I really need to look for more media with severely anxious individuals who AREN’T being weirdly infantilized or romanticized so that I can salivate over them and murmur “Literally me……literally me……” while violently gripping a pencil to draw them. Lol lmao.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest and Rain Man both have the same problem of the entire plot being some dysfunctional white dude realizing that mentally ill people are people, but where they differ is that OFOtCN has actual artistic value and completely unrivaled East Coast Aesthetic(!!) while Rain Man's entire legacy is "Tom Cruise was kinda hot in the 90s"

Remembering Bo Goldman 1932-2023
Screenwriter Bo Goldman has died at 90. He won two Oscars for two of the greatest films ever made IMHO: Milos Forman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Jonathan Demme's Melvin and Howard. OFOTCN was adapted and it was one of Jack Nicholson's great performances. Demme's M&H is a phenomenal piece in Demme’s body of work. The inherent goodness in people despite their flaws is a constant theme in a lot of his work and that’s especially true here.
Goldman was an uncredited writer on Demme's 1984 film Swing Shift as well. That movie gets a bad wrap mainly because Demme didn't have final cut, star/producer Goldie Hawn did. I have seen the released version and I've also seen the director's cut version and there was some great scenes in there, just not as good as one would hope from Demme and Goldman.
Goldman is the father-in-law of another talented director Todd Fields as well.
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.

Back on my bullshit (making fanart of a book from the 60s with almost no fandom)
Updated my designs for the Therapeutic Community- really minor changes for the most part, but I’ve also just gotten better with posing/angles since the last time I drew these guys 🖤
