Speaking OET: How Your Work Is Assessed
For medical professionals who want to work in English-speaking nations, the Occupational English Test (OET) is a crucial test. The Speaking test is distinct from the other four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — because it assesses your ability to interact with patients or their family in authentic settings. Therefore, you can perform better if you understand how the test is graded.
The OET speaking test’s structure
There are two role-play scenarios on the OET speaking exam. The duration of each scenario is roughly five minutes. In these role-plays, the examiner will pretend to be a patient or a member of their family, and you will pretend to be a medical professional, such as a doctor or nurse.
Linguistic standards:
The capacity for intelligence
This is a reference to the clarity of your speaking. Words must be pronounced correctly, with the appropriate stress and tone. When describing a new medication, for instance, you should emphasize crucial information like the dosage and timing of ingestion and pronounce the name clearly.
Fluency
It entails speaking at the appropriate tempo and with naturalness. Speaking too quickly, too slowly, or hesitating too much should all be avoided. For example, you can take a brief break when delivering delicate news to give the patient time to process it.
Language appropriateness
Instead of utilizing complicated medical jargon, you should speak in plain, understandable terms. For instance, to make a medical treatment easier for the patient to understand, break it down into manageable steps.
Expression and grammar
To effectively communicate your ideas without confusing the listener, use a range of words and proper syntax.
Criteria for clinical communication:
Developing relationships
Engage in a polite and courteous introduction. Demonstrate your attentive listening skills and comprehension of the patient’s circumstances.
Recognizing the viewpoint of the patient
Inquire to learn about the patient’s worries. Ask them what worries them, for instance, and reassure them if they appear anxious.
Establishing a framework
Make your conversation easier to follow by structuring it. To indicate when you are switching to a new subject, use short words.
Information collection
Ask broad questions first, then more focused ones. You would use open-ended questions to elicit further information from a patient who responds, “I don’t feel well.”
Information sharing
Give detailed explanations while providing information. Take a moment to see if the patient is understanding, and if not, encourage them to ask questions.
You can improve your performance on the OET Speaking test by being aware of these characteristics. In your job in healthcare, these abilities will also help you communicate effectively and clearly.
StudyOET provides expert-led OET courses to help you pass the test with confidence if you are prepared for it.

Achieving the required score isn't just about passing; it's about proving that you have the English proficiency to handle real-life scenarios with patients and colleagues. If you're aiming to work in the UK, Benchmark Education Solutions can be your partner in acing the test.
1. OET Reading Mock Test: Practice for Real-World Scenarios
One of the best ways to improve your reading skills for the OET is through mock tests. At Benchmark Education Solutions, our OET reading mock tests are designed to mirror the actual test format and difficulty level, helping you practice under realistic conditions.
The OET Reading section consists of three parts, each testing different skills:
Part A focuses on speed and accuracy with short texts.
Part B covers workplace-related texts, requiring attention to detail.
Part C involves longer passages where you need to comprehend and interpret opinions.
Our mock tests let you practice each part, giving you a clear picture of where you stand and which areas need improvement.
2. OET Reading Sample: Improve Comprehension and Confidence
If you’re not ready for a full mock test, starting with an OET reading sample can help. Sample exercises allow you to familiarize yourself with the type of texts and questions you’ll face without the time pressure of a complete test. Benchmark Education Solutions offers free reading samples that you can use to develop your reading comprehension skills. By practicing with samples, you'll gradually build confidence and improve your reading speed and accuracy.

Benchmark Education Solutions’ online speaking test service is designed for healthcare professionals who need personalized feedback on their spoken English skills. Our one-on-one practice sessions are conducted with experienced English-speaking examiners who provide constructive feedback on fluency, pronunciation, and clarity.
The OET Speaking test simulates real-life healthcare scenarios, where you'll interact with patients or colleagues. For instance, you might be asked to give instructions to a patient, explain a diagnosis, or handle a difficult conversation. Practicing with our online speaking test helps you handle these situations smoothly, preparing you to communicate effectively and confidently in your healthcare role.
4. Understanding the OET Score Required for the UK
For healthcare professionals aiming to work in the UK, the OET score requirements vary depending on the role and the institution. Typically, most organizations require a minimum of Grade B (350/500) in each subtest. However, it's essential to check with your specific regulatory body, as requirements can differ slightly for doctors, nurses, or other healthcare professions.
Benchmark Education Solutions keeps up-to-date with the latest OET requirements, helping you understand what’s needed for your career goals. Our resources are crafted to help you reach and exceed these benchmarks, giving you the confidence to succeed in your healthcare journey.

OET Reading Sub-Test: This 60-minute test also has three sections that are intended to assess a candidate’s reading comprehension in-depth.
OET Writing Sub-Test: This section of the test evaluates the candidate’s ability to compose formal correspondence, such as an official letter, in 40 minutes.
The OET Speaking Sub-Test: This is a role-playing test that evaluates a candidate’s general communication abilities by having them engage with a patient.

I hope your visa stuff works out 😘
Thank you 🩷 the only obstacle for now is not having the English certificate: OET (Occupational English Test - healthcare professionals like me can take this one, or IELTS (International English Language Testing System. They can be quite expensive unless the recruiting hospital decides to fund it, which some do. And just as any English test, it will feature writing, listening, speaking, and reading, which I'm 101% comfortable with tbh 🩷
