Okay I'll say it. People ship Telemachus and Pyrrhus, but where are the fanfics? It makes me wonder how many shippers there actually is.
I know there's a lot of people who love the ship! I swear, I know! I read all of the literal 10 fucking fanfics from ao3 about them. (And mind you, 2 of them are with ships I don't even like, but I still read because I love them so much. Even if they were only background characters and so was the ship.)
But tell me where are all the fanfics, huh? Where are the modern aus? The high school aus where they're an bestfriends to lovers slow burn or an academic rivals to lovers kind of vibe? Because I swear, every single fandom has one of those. What about a fanfic of Ody like running across Pyrrhus in the palace halls, freshly killed all of the suitors a few days ago and being all like :
"Neo? Why are you here, Aren't you supposed to be at scyros or with Thetis training for a new war?"
And Pyrrhus and Telemachus have to explain and all that. Where's the fanfics of that?
Or what about the same thing with the trope of meeting the parents but it's with deidameia meeting tel?
Or a nice coffee shop au where they're both oblivious and idiots in love with no social life and it's super cliche and they could be in the same college for an extra cliche middle schooler worthy story of a 13 year old girl who just recently transitioned between wattpad to ao3, because fuck it. Those types of fics are my guilty pleasure.
Or what about a cute little 5 + 1 fics or something? Where's those fics? Because no matter the ship, they have that. FIGURE 5, A FANDOM THAT IS DEAD AS FUCK (hi, if you're a figurine it's me @no.1kymieshipper on tiktok I think I'm kind of at least a veteran in the community) HAS ONE OF THOSE. BUT TELEMACHUS AND PYRRHUS? NONE.
I want a cringe fic. I want a beautifully written novel worthy amazingly pitched fic by a girl who's first language isn't English. I want a cross over fic with Lady bug or some shit. I want a fic where it's all angst, with no happy ending what so ever. I want a fic from someone who only knows them for Madeline Millers horribly done books with an great writting style but horrible characterization that is just inaccurate and horrible so they make Dei a bitch, Achilles an innocent little bean, Patroclus a WARRIOR who CANNOT FIGHT, AND PYRRHUS THE MOST RUTHLESS EIGHT YEAR OLD WHO WAS AT FAULT FOR THE ASHES THING EVEN THO IT. DID. NOT. HAPPEN. THAT WAS MADELINES THING.
heck, I'll even stroll through the dark sides of fanfictions and look through watpad for them if I have to. I am THAT desperate.
And I can write, I can. I am in fact writing a fic for them as we speak. I am trying, and trying, and rereading everything. Every little scene. Analyzing every detail. I love them so much they are my cuties.
#pyrrhus#telemachus#neoptolemus#Telemachus and Pyrrhus#i love them#ao3#watpad#fanfics#PLEASE.#anti tsoa#i love you guys please write fics

Ok, I think I'm able to form words now. Thoughts on The Ithaca Saga let's go!!
The Challenge
I love how after two acts, eight sagas of Odysseus going on and on about his love for Penelope the very first thing they do once she actually shows up is to establish that 1) she's as smart and as cunning as Odysseus, and 2) she is 100% as loyal and devoted as Ody is.
I also like that we can see quite a bit of her personality. Like. I don't know how else to describe her, but Penelope reads kind of prideful to me? Like 'they don't know / that every night / I unthread all the work I've done / cause I'd rather lie / than allow them to think they've won' really reminded me of Odysseus gloating to the sirens on how he figured out their whole schtick (like, some kind of satisfaction at being able to trick them for so long if that makes sense), and 'cause I'd rather die than grow old without the best of you' is very obviously an I deserve the best (which is Odysseus, but the suitors don't know that). And I like that! Let Penelope feel superior to the assholes hogging her palace! She is better than them!
My favorite part of this song: just about everything from 'oh, could it be some kind of sign / that my world is all about to change?' onwards.
Also, I'm sure it's been said before, but I love how Penelope talks about Odysseus during the description of the challenge. It's My husband's old bow, not the old king's bow (like it'll be in Hold Them Down). And also the phrasing of 'rule with me as his queen' is pretty detached from whoever the 'winner' would be, I think; like, she's not even thinking of herself as the winner's wife, just the queen. Odysseus is her husband and no one else and is not even worth to think otherwise. They make me insane.
Hold Them Down
I don't have a lot to say about Hold Them Down other that it's a damn good song, man. Fucking chills when they started to talk about what they were going to do to Penelope.
Also I think it's pretty obvious that the suitors see Penelope more as a trophy than as a person. They want to posses her, and the status she'd bring them.
My favorite part of the song: 'here and now, there's a chance for action / here and now, we can take control / here and now, burn it down to ashes/ channel the fire inside your soul and / hold 'em down'
Also also, I WAS NOT EXPECTING ANTINOUS TO DIE IN THIS SONG. I THOUGHT HE'D DIE DURING THE NEXT ONE. I FUCKING SCREAMED WHEN I HEARD THAT ARROW.
Odysseus
My honest to god reaction during this whole song was incomprehensible screaching. From start to finish.
Eurymachus calling Odysseus old king even as he begs for mercy is so disrespectful omg. Even as you're asking for forgiveness and to be spared you think he's replaceable, you think there'll be a new king. And then you said to have open arms?? bitch that's why you got shot lmao
*hears piano* Me: ATHENA??!?!?!?! Me: Oh it's Telemachus Me: TELEMACHUS?!!??!?!!
Having Telemachus willing to show mercy and to spare his foes right after (and before!!) Odysseus refuses is actually so important to me. Similarly to how Telemachus describes monster fighting in Legendary, it really shows how different experiences the two of them have had so far; Odysseus is jaded and has accepted ruthlessness, while Telemachus hasn't had a reason not to greet the world with open arms. I think it also somewhat shows how Athena (or at least her teachings) has changed; from Ody refusing to finish the cyclops in Remember Them, to Telemachus offering to spare the suitors.
I think my favorite part was the whole 'Mercy? Mercy?! / My mercy has long since drowned' because it made me scream.
Also, obligatory "Odysseus's name being chanted like other monsters names in the background" mention. Good shit.
I Can't Help but Wonder
ARE WE READY FOR THE SONGS THAT MADE ME CRY????
10/10 Father-son reunion, no notes. can't think too much about it or I'll cry again
I knew Athena would be back but I still gasped. Odysseus and Athena's journeys are so interesting to me because they basically went opposite directions. Odysseus became a monster and learned ruthlessness, but Athena became more human and learned to greet the world with open arms. I even think that 'I can't help but wonder / what this world could be / if we all held each other with a bit more empathy' somewhat reflects 'what good would killing do / when mercy is a skill more of this world could learn to use'. And it makes sense that they don't reconcile here, they're too different right now and everything is still too fresh but I HAD HOPE. Fuck it, I still have hope. 5 years post-canon they become friends again.
My favorite part of the song is Telemachus and Odysseus whole deal, man. Just reading the lyrics makes me tear up.
Would You Fall in Love with Me Again
This. Song. Fucked. Me. Up.
The lyrics the instrumentals the vocals???
This is my favorite song in the whole saga. Like. I've never wanted to make an animatic for a song more in my life. I don't even know how to draw?? I'm this close to learning how to draw just so I can make an animatic of this song.
I adore how they both get mad at the end when the other seems to be questioning their love. Especially Penelope. I love how she goes yes of course I will always love you no matter what, what kind of question is that. She has so little time on-screen and yet she makes herself so clear during her songs.
And omg the instrumental of Just a Man???? It sounded so Epic omggggg
And the last words of the musical are I love you I'm-
Anyways I love this song I love this saga I love this musical that is all thank you for reading
I think The Ithaca Saga made me forget how to speak, man

compilation of bts/army tweets i retweeted but doesn’t actually appear on my profile (TWITTER WHY)
TEXT POSTS:
Namgi are actual prodigies, how did bang pd just casually pick em up like that
ARMYs give BTS amazing promo but it only works cause...
And just in case anyone doesn't know, we call K-army "diamonds" because...
namjoon: i made espresso!! jungkook: i wanna try it namjoon: u hate bitter coffee
seokjin couldnt give less of a shit!!!!
Hoseok is Rock Lee
We have faves that are so willing to educate themselves...
I actually adore the final verses of The Last so much.
Hobi’s pseudo-triple entendres
why is this something i feel like rap line does in the studio
the funniest part of this run ep was when taehyung said...
BTS teletubbies @ MBC Gayo 2017
every update this year
top three betrayals are bighit not releasing tony montana feat jimin...
When I first began to fully get into BTS, I had a pretty jaded view...
Dear BTS 2013, its ARMY 2018.
MY DNA
*Yoongi's dating rumour*
this episode (run ep. 46) was so full of innuendos
fake trans on jin’s supposed feelings about the SIN separation
whoever is directing run should be reigned as the nation's hero...
What do you call a company that surpassed and outsold the big3?
bts are the definition of hyping ppl up for doing the bare minimum
an actual conversation that happened (run bts ep 46)
suran suga again and army
So I suddenly remember when Namjoon said these during Wings Tour The Final...
She was pushed by another members of staff while doing namjoon’s makeup
I WAS IN THE SHOWER BLASTING BTS AND ONCE I GOT OUT...
to the female staff who consoled jimin and keeps saying “you didn't mess up”...
they went from pardon to what was that
What happened at the first two episodes just made me respect Namjoon more.
on a serious note, it would be nice if when bts gets a special someone...
Next time during BTS concert, instead of screaming “encore encore”...
yall ever wanna think about how namjoon said that jimin needs lots of love and attention and thats probably why he shared a room with hoseok bc thats what exactly hoseok gives him
if I have any feeling towards BTS thats stronger than Love then it's RESPECT
the reason Jin was going on and on with his (R)evolution (E)volution (D)rop in the ocean thing might be because he was "hinting" at Youtube Red
one day, there will be a last...
namjoon came to post a selfie and left with a dating scandal
remember when hobi said “i wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for bangtan”...
Namjoon admitting that he’s also “just a kid” ...
"The reason I make music is because, after all, I am also afraid of the world."
Yoongi's scalp is braver than any US marine
Sometimes we forget that Namjoon is also just trying to figure out the world.
PUMA fansign: thank you for making music that changes the world
Everyone has a musical preference & enjoy when their artists reflect that.
let me talk about taehyung and how amazing he is as a friend
i like when seokjin shares stuff about his childhood, we get to know his orijin
BTS is also for redefining masculinity (hiphop is their way of life)
from humble beginnings to legends
burn the stage makes me realize that whenever rm post photos of nature ...
what exactly makes namjoon the sexiest for me ...
the reason seokjin’s chest and shoulders are so wide
Bighit: O! R YU DEAD, 2?
"What's your favourite song currently?"
the mask guy: u didnt bring anything to exchange so i cant help u
namjoons exchange [in the Fake Love Teaser 1] is so funny to me...
here are some of my favourite joon interviews
"How did you join BTS?"
jin: i’ve been doing it for 4 years
I hate it when people say armys have two brain cells like bold of you to think we even have a brain (sarcasm lol)
i’m a new generation anpanman
When the Billboard news was released this morning... (wisha)
interviewer: so what are your goals?
sometimes i still think about how the fanchant of cypher pt4...
"Hoe calm down, my shoe lace is untied"
“itʼs ok, we all found bts when we needed them in our lives the most”
i’m so sorry but it’s fake love
i want to see the world from taehyung’s view
just for youuuu
i love that taehyung is never anything but proud when talking abt the fact that he’s gained weight
i bet taehyung gives the best hugs
Our bomb is like a permanent reminder...
remember when we were like omg hixtape‘s mv gonna have bomb ass choreography lmaooo
no but it's so cute bts call it family pictures and not group pictures??
there's an undeniable sexual energy between yoongi nd every trophy...
bh staff: describe yourself in one word
jin: man, blowjobs sure are a mouthful (incorrect bts quotes)

Former Australia paceman Glenn McGrath claims visitors can win first Ashes in England for 18 years
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
‘England are not playing with confidence’: Australia legend Glenn McGrath backs his nation to win first Ashes series in England for 18 years
Glenn McGrath played the last time Australia won an Ashes abroad in 2001
McGrath believes the current side are well set for a series victory this summer
He also states that the series will come down to performances with the bat
The 49-year-old refused to make a prediction ahead of opener on Thursday
By Dan Ripley for MailOnline
Published: 18:46 EDT, 29 July 2019 | Updated: 19:41 EDT, 29 July 2019
Glenn McGrath has claimed Australia are in their best position yet to end an Ashes drought in England that stretches back 18 years.
Australia currently hold the urn after hammering England 4-0 on home soil during the 2017-18 series. They will hope to retain it at the end of a five-match tour which begins at Edgbaston on Thursday.
But they have suffered defeat in their four previous tours, and have not won since a 4-1 triumph over England back in 2001 – a series that saw McGrath rip havoc into the hosts’ battling line-up with 32 wickets.
Glenn McGrath took 563 wickets in a Test career lasting 14 years
McGrath was speaking at The Oval in an event to encourage more children to take up sport
McGrath believes that England’s lack of confidence with the bat is an important factor that could help the urn stay down under with the tourists and offer their best chance of success in England for the first time in nearly two decades.
‘Without a doubt [it is the best chance]. England are not playing with confidence. If Australia can get on top early it will have a massive impact,’ he told Sportsmail.
‘Australia have got the ability to win this series. Both bowling attacks are quality, so they are going to play well. It’s going to depend on the batting for who is going to win rather than the bowling.’
Australia captain Tim Paine poses with the prized urn ahead of the Ashes opener on Thursday
England’s performances with the bat has been their achilles heel over the last few years and it showed up again in the Test match with Ireland at Lord’s where they were bowled out for 85 in the first innings.
It was the fourth time since 2016 they had lost all 10 wickets in one session. It came with the Test debut of Jason Roy, who starred as an opener in the ODI World Cup winning squad and is seen as the latest attempt to fix a creaking top order.
Roy responded with a fluid 72 runs from 78 balls in the second innings after being out for five in the first, but his fellow top order batsmen Rory Burns and Joe Denly hit just 45 between them in the victory over Ireland.
McGrath sees the fragility of England’s top three as a weakness to be exploited, claiming that while they have the ability to compete at Test level they can be exposed mentally.
England struggled with the bat in their Test match against Ireland last week at Lord’s
THE ASHES 2019
First Test – Edgbaston, 1-5 August
Second Test – Lord’s, 14-18 August
Third Test – Headingley, 22-26 August
Fourth Test – Old Trafford, 4-8 September
Fifth Test – The Oval, 12-16 September
‘The fast bowler’s job is to get rid of the top order, those are the match ups you want to win,’ he added.
‘If Australia win that, that’s how they are going to win this series. They’ve got to pick on the top three, keep on top of them, and get rid of them as soon as possible.
‘In Cummings, Hazlewood and Starc… with those guys it’s going to be hard work to start with and if you are down on confidence then it’s going to get worse. If England start poorly, it’s going to be a tough series for them – but if they get off to a good start, that’s just what England need.
‘Everyone [in the squad] is good enough to play Test cricket, it’s just mentally how they go about it. They don’t have many options, unless someone is performing incredibly well at county level. But then picking someone out of nowhere, throwing them into a Test series as big as the Ashes… that’s an incredibly tough thing to do.’
McGrath, who was speaking at a Thinkmarkets event at the Oval to help promote cricket to young people, is notorious for his frequent 5-0 whitewash predictions in favour of Australia, but despite his high hopes for a win in England admitted he wanted to see the outcome of the Edgbaston Test, a ground Australia tend to struggle on, before making a call.
England captain Joe Root is looking to regain the Ashes after a humiliating 4-0 loss in 2017-18
Even the offer of a 4-1 to Australia scoreline couldn’t tempt the former fast bowler to commit to a prediction.
‘No. I don’t like saying Australia has lost a Test before it’s even started! I find it hard to say we are going to draw one, so to say I think we are going to lose one before the series, then I cannot bring myself to do that. I’m going to sit on the fence and see after the first Test before I make my predictions.
‘If Australia can win that first Test on a ground when England do really well it will be a massive. If they do win then I will be backing 5-0!’
Glenn McGrath is working with online trading broker ThinkMarkets to encourage more young people to get into sport through the Think2020initiative. For more information please visit www.thinkmarkets.com.

Glenn Maxwell's Test profession cruelled by World Cup flop
Failing in the glaring spotlight of a World Cup has derailed lots of a global cricket career and Glenn Maxwell is now looming as the most current victim of this curse.
Despite averaging nearly 50 in the past two Sheffield Guard seasons, having a first-class average of 40, and offering added worth with his convenient bowling and elite fielding, Maxwell is not considered among the leading 25 Test choices in Australia.
The all-rounder was neglected of the 25-man squad for the Australia versus Australia A four-day match beginning on Tuesday. Australia's chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, stated while revealing this squad that Maxwell would be "actually dissatisfied" with his World Cup project.
It was a strong tip that Maxwell's flop because competition had actually cruelled his Test ambitions.
While I would not have actually had Maxwell in my Ashes squad, the fact he's not even ranked in the top 25 cricketers in Australia suggests his hopes of building a Test profession are slim while Hohns and Justin Langer are in charge.
The Victorian will quickly turn 31, which implies his ODI career also might be in jeopardy if Australia now decide to concentrate on selecting players young enough to compete in the next World Cup.
Paradoxically, being disposed from the 50-over side might be the only thing that can revive Maxwell's Test profession.
Glenn Maxwell(AP Photo/Aijaz Rahi)His routine presence in Australia's white-ball teams over the previous 5 years has restricted his exposure to first-class
cricket. More than 8 years after making his first-class debut, Maxwell has actually played simply 63 matches. As a contrast, Matt Renshaw is eight years more youthful than Maxwell yet has played 56 first-rate video games. That's partly due to the fact that Renshaw has had very little white-ball commitments.
Maxwell is unlikely to earn another fracture at Tests by making, say, 400 perform at 50 in five Shield matches this summer. He requires to pile up a 900-plus run Guard season to make his claims hard to overlook. That hasn't been possible in the past because of Maxwell's white-ball commitments.
Since he debuted for Australia 7 years ago Maxwell has, typically, played just 4.5 Shield matches per season. To earn a regular Test area playing so little Guard cricket is extremely challenging-- particularly when you are not one of the golden kids in regards to Check selection.
Over the last few years it has actually looked like the selectors have actually searched for any reason to choose particular players and any factor not to select others. The likes of the Marsh brothers have actually been picked consistently with flimsy reason. It has been simple for them to rise to the Test team and after that tough for them to be discarded.
Players like Maxwell and Joe Burns have actually had to work hard to get opportunities in the saggy green, only to be dropped after performing well.
Less than two years ago Maxwell was having his second run in the side. Over those 4 Tests in Asia, where so numerous batsmen have actually floundered, he balanced 37 with the bat and scored an uncommon load by an Aussie in India.
That century in Ranchi was not scored at a sprint, it was not laced with audacious strokes. Maxwell the red-ball batsman and Maxwell the white-ball slugger are 2 different entities. The Victorian showed composure-- a quality frequently lacking in his limited-overs profession-- to grind to 104 from 185 balls. He spent more than four hours at the crease.
(Mark Nolan/Getty Images) At the time it looked like that outstanding stint would see him hold his place for the Ashes series that following summer. Maxwell then made a strong 200 perform at 40 in the Shield, batting in the beginning drop for Victoria before the nationwide squad was revealed.
When he was overlooked, it ended up being clear Maxwell was going to have to do more than the majority of Australian batsmen should to make a spot.
Many over the last few years have actually practically fallen under the Aussie XI on the back of minimal achievements. Maxwell, meanwhile, had succeeded in a Test stint on the side's most troublesome continent, been solid in the Guard batting up the order at 3, and yet had not just been axed from the beginning XI for the 2017 Ashes however likewise overlooked of the squad.
That is significantly appearing like the sliding doors moment in Maxwell's Test career. He was in the type of his life at the time. As Australia won the first Test, Maxwell accumulated 278 in the Guard against a strong NSW attack featuring Steve O'Keefe, Trent Copeland, Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger and Moises Henriques-- all of whom have actually represented Australia.
Sports viewpoint delivered daily Had that innings come in the previous Guard round, Maxwell would have remained in the Ashes XI. Of that, I have no doubt. And versus a threadbare England attack on some great batting house pitches, he could have run amok.
Almost 2 years on, Maxwell is now up until now from Test selection that he's not even in the leading 25 choices. It may take something exceptional from here to reanimate his Test career.

#667 Rayadu, Pandya and spinners help India outclass NZ in final ODI; England in state of SHOCK as WI beat them by 10 wickets in 2nd test, thereby lose series as well; Australia in firm control in 2nd test against Lanka; Saurashtra impress on day 1 of Ranji final; Messi helps Barca secure a draw against Valencia in La Liga; Spurs and Chelsea impress in EPL and more..:-)
On day 3, England had to dismiss WI for under 320 and expect their batsmen to fire. Day started with a sad news. WI pacer Joseph’s mother expired early on Saturday morning. He continued to play though. Both teams wore bands as mark of respect.Though Bravo scored 3rd slowest fifty , WI managed just 306. They had lead of 119. It looked a huge lead though. England had to make around 260 and put WI under pressure. England started off well as openers Burns and Denly had a 35 run opening stand. Roach and Gabriel bowled a bit short which helped England as well. Holder though pitched up and was rewarded in the first ball itself. He dismissed Burns. Bairstow played a rash shot and was castled by Holder. England 49-2. It was not a short which is expected from number 3 batsmen. Root was dismissed by Joseph for 2nd time in the match. Umpire had given not out. Holder took the risk of going for DRS and was rewarded as there was faint edge. Root didn’t like it though. England 56-3. Post that it was a procession. Wickets fell at regular intervals. Roach ripped apart middle and lower middle order. He ended with 4-fer. England were dismissed for 132 inside 43 overs. England just played 103.1 overs including both innings. WI faced 131 overs in just one innings. That’s staggering stat. Just goes to show that Root isn’t as brave a captain when he loses the toss. He won the toss 8 of 9 times between India and Lanka series. He has lost both here and lost both the matches. Another factor is lack of proper test batsmen when conditions are tough. They have more of proven ODI batsmen in Bairstow and Butler. They need to rethink on batting order. They have lost the series here. WI have beaten England for the first time since 2009. This is a historic series win for WI considering their recent record. WI bowlers have been a revelation in this series which should augur well for them. It is a series loss which will be hard to digest for England considering they have Ashes in 6 months time. Vaughan had commented that Australia have no chance in Ashes. He needs to rethink that now after this dismal performance.
In final ODI, India won the toss and elected to bat. India made 3 changes. Dhoni came in for Dinesh Karthik. Vijay Shankar came in for Kuldeep. Shami came back for Khaleel. India struggled in early swinging conditions in Wellington again. Rohit was castled by Rohit for just 2. Boult dismissed Dhawan in next over. India 12-2. Henry dismissed Shubman Gill for just 7. 17-3. Shubman Gill need to be given more time to settle in India A tours. Players like Shreyas Iyer and Manish pandey need to be given a longer run. Dhoni survived a LBW appeal in his first ball. He was castled by an incoming beauty by Boult. India 18-4. All India fans though “ Here we go again!! “. Vijay Shankar joined Rayadu. Vijay managed to rotate strike better. He hit a boundary of his 2nd ball. He looked in good touch. Rayadu was just blocking which what was needed considering the situation. They took India to 39-4 in 15 overs. Once Boult and Henry were taken out of the attack, Vijay and Rayadu settled into good rhythm. Singles started to come with odd boundary. They brought up fifty stand and even took India past 100. Against the run of play, Shankar was runout for 45. India 116-5 in 32nd over. Rayadu then had a 74 run stand with Jadhav who played smart cricket. In this partnership Raydu upped the ante and hammered a few sixes. Just when it looked like he would get a century, he was dismissed trying to slog Henry for 90. India 190-6 in 44th over. India needed someone to hammer in last 5 overs. Jadhav felt soon after for 34. That gave license Pandya to go for the kill. He hammered 3 consecutive sixes of Astle. That gave India momentum to get past 240. They reached 252. Pandya hit 45 of 22 balls. 253 was chaseable but India di brilliantly to get to this score from 18-4. India started well. Shami and Bhuvi didn’t give bad balls early on. Shami removed Nichols early on. Munro hit a few blows before being castled by Shami. NZ 37-2. Pandya dismissed Taylor in his first over. Taylor should have gone for DRS as ball was going above the stumps. NZ 38-3. Williamson and Latham dug in hard and took NZ past 100 in 25th over. Just when it looked like NZ would march towards victory, Jadhav and Chahal changed the complexion of the match. Williamson failed again as he was dismissed by Jadhav for 39. Chahal trapped Latham plumb in front. NZ 119-5. Grandhomme was also dismissed by Chahal. NZ 135-6. Neesham gave India nightmares with 32 ball 44. He got runout in silly manner which diminished NZ hopes. NZ were eventually dismissed for 217. India won by 35 runs to take series 4-1. It has been stunning series for India.
In 2nd test, Lanka were dismissed for 217 from 90-0. Starc got back to form with a 5-fer. Khawaja hundred took Australia to 196-3 before Paine declared. Lanka were 17-0 needing 517 for a win. Australia should win test by tomorrow unless somebody from lanka play out of their skins. In Ranji trophy final, Vidarbha chose to bat after winning the toss. Unadkat reduced Vidarbha to 60-3 including that of Jaffer. Wickets fell at regular intervals. For first 6 wickets, highest stand was 46. They had 57 run stand for 7th wicket before Wadkar was dismissed 3 overs before close of play. This is not the kind of innings expected in Ranji trophy finals on opening day. Vidarbha ended day at 200-7. Saurashtra are on top of as now. With Pujara in the etam match could be over by day 3 here if he comes to the party.
In La Liga, Valencia gave Barca a huge wake up call by going 2 goals up. Gameiro and Parejo scored goals. Barca needed their star player Messi to stand up and he did. He scored a couple to give Barca a draw. Should Athletico Madrid beat Real Betis, lead by Barca would be reduced to 3 points. In EPL, Chelsea hammered Huddersfield 5-0. Higuain and Hazard scored 2 goals each. Spurs beat NewCastle 1-0. Spurs are one point ahead of Man City though have played one additional game. They are 4 points behind leaders Liverpool. Man City face Arsenal later today and Liverpool face West Ham.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has won the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Player of the Year after a fabulous 12 months that saw him play a decisive role in England’s dramatic victory at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 along with a host of other memorable performances.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Stokes, who kept his nerve to smash an unbeaten 84 in the final against New Zealand, aggregated 719 runs and bagged 12 wickets in 20 ODIs during the voting period. He also scored 821 runs and took 22 wickets in 11 Tests, the highlight being an unbeaten 135 to win a nail-biting Ashes thriller in Leeds.
Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has been named the Test Player of the Year and India opener Rohit Sharma the ODI Player of the Year in other major men’s ICC awards announced on Wednesday. India seamer Deepak Chahar won T20I Performance of the Year, Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has been named as Emerging Cricketer of the Year, whilst Scotland’s Kyle Coetzer is the Associate Cricketer of the Year.

India captain Virat Kohli, who had swept the Player of the Year, Test Player of the Year and ODI Player of the Year last year, has won the Spirit of Cricket Award. He won the award for his gesture at the World Cup, when he egged the crowd on to support Steve Smith rather than boo him soon after his return to international cricket from a one-year suspension for changing the condition of the ball. Kohli has also been named captain of both the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year.
Meanwhile, England umpire Richard Illingworth has become the seventh person to win the David Shepherd Trophy for Umpire of the Year. This is the first time that the 56-year-old has won the award named after the late umpire from England.
ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney congratulated the winners of the awards this year and wished them all the best for the future.
Manu Sawhney: “On behalf of the ICC, I would like to congratulate all of the individual 2019 award winners as well as those players named in the ICC Teams of the Year.
“The awards celebrate the world’s best cricketers and this has undoubtedly been an extraordinary year for men’s cricket. The highlight of course was the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 that ended in such dramatic fashion. Ben Stokes was, of course in the midst of all the action during the event from that quite incredible catch at the Oval right through to that epic final at Lord’s and is a very deserving winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.”
The 28-year-old Stokes was elated at winning the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy but remembered to credit his team and support staff.
Ben Stokes: “It is quite flattering to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year. The past 12 months have been incredible for England cricket and to lift the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time was our greatest achievement.
“This award is testament to my teammates and the support staff that have been there every step of the way. Fundamentally, without the support of these individuals, we would never achieved our objective of lifting a major trophy.
“There is an incredible bond between teammates and to savour our achievements, whether that’s winning the World Cup Final at Lord’s or digging deep to win a Test match against Australia at Headingley. It is satisfying you can accomplish these superb highs together.
“The last 12 months have been the best in my career, and I believe what we attained will be the catalyst to achieve further success over the next few years.”
Pat Cummins, who grabbed 59 wickets in 12 Test matches during the period and finished the year as the top-ranked bowler in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings, won the award staving off stiff competition including from compatriots Smith and Labuschagne.
Pat Cummins: “It’s a tremendous honour to be considered the best player of last year and one which was certainly unexpected. I owe much to my team, team-mates and all those involved in Australian cricket for what was a really successful year for the team. The highlight was certainly being able to retain the Ashes which was a great reward for the hard work that went into that tour.”
Rohit Sharma looked forward to carrying his form in the coming year, after an aggregate of 1409 runs from 28 matches with seven hundreds earned him the award for ODIs.
Rohit Sharma: “I would like to thank the ICC for giving me this award and the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to represent the country. It is great to be recognised in this fashion. We are very happy with the way we performed as a team in 2019. We could have done better but we have a lot of positives and a lot to look forward to in 2020.”
Chahar said his haul of six for seven against Bangladesh in Nagpur, which included a hat-trick, would always be cherished by him.
Deepak Chahar: “I am very happy to receive this award. I would like to thank the ICC for this award and to the BCCI for giving me a chance to represent my country. That performance was very special for me. I got an opportunity to play for India after a long time. Taking six wickets conceding only seven runs was a dream performance for me and will always remain close to my heart.”
Labuschagne was an easy winner of the Emerging Player award after scoring 1,104 runs in 11 Tests, which saw him zoom in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings from 110 at the start of the year to fourth by the end of the year.
Marnus Labuschagne: “It’s been exciting, it has been a great journey and I am very humbled with this award. It has been a great summer but the challenge is when you have a summer like that is to make sure you are backing it up and keep doing it. Being part of such a great team has been amazing, I have been very fortunate to be able to play in what is a great time for Australian cricket.”
India captain Virat Kohli was surprised to win the Spirit of Cricket Award and explained his reasons for backing Smith the way he did.
Virat Kohli: “I’m surprised that I have got it, after many years of being under the scanner for the wrong things. It is part of camaraderie that sportsmen must have with each other. That moment was purely understanding an individual’s situation. I don’t think a guy who is coming out of a situation like that needs to be taken advantage of. You can sledge, can have have banter on the field, you say things to the opposition in wanting to beat them. But booing someone is not in the spirit of any sport, I don’t endorse it.
“Also, that should not be a representation of our fans and what we stand as a cricketing nation, a sporting nation. We need to all take responsibility towards that. Intimidate the opposition, definitely try and have an upper hand but in a matter that is not targeting someone emotionally. That is not acceptable at any level and people should be wary of that.”
Coetzer was surprised at winning the award in spite of leading the Associate batsmen in ODIs with 880 runs in 18 matches and also aggregating 702 runs in 22 T20Is.
Kyle Coetzer: “It is a huge honour to have won the award. It was a huge shock, I certainly did not expect it, which makes it even more special. A big shout out needs to go to everyone who supported me throughout in 2019 – my family, my friends, all Cricket Scotland supporters who have come out through thick and thin, usually in some poor weather to be honest, everyone in the Cricket Scotland office as well as the backroom staff. A very special mention needs to go out to the players who support me on the field every day.”
Illingworth thanked all of those who supported him over the years and was happy to join his predecessors already on the list.
Richard Illingworth: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be named umpire of the year. To join the prestigious list of previous recipients of the award is very humbling. “Although umpiring can be seen to be quite individual, there’s a huge amount done as a collective .I’d like to thank all my fellow match officials, the ICC and the ECB offices who have been great sounding boards and inspirations over the years. Also, thank you to my coach Denis Burns who helps me a huge amount and puts a great perspective on tough days.
“My family have been a tremendous support over the years and I’m delighted to share this award with them.

Former Australia paceman Glenn McGrath claims visitors can win first Ashes in England for 18 years
Former Australia pacemaker Glenn McGrath claims that for 18 years, visitors can win first Ashes in England playing hosts & # 39; not confidently & # 39;

McGrath believes that the current side is well set for a victory series this summer
He also declares that the series will come down to bat versions

Glenn McGrath has claimed that their best position to date has ended a drought of the ashes in England that retreats for 18 years.
Australia currently has the urn after England hammering 4-0 on its own soil during the 2017-18 series. They hope to keep it at the end of a five-match tour that starts at Edgbaston on Thursday.
But they have suffered defeat on their previous four tours, and have not won since a 4-1 triumph over England back in 2001 – a series in which McGrath caused chaos in the battle of the hosts with 32 wickets .
Glenn McGrath completed 563 wickets in a 14-year career test
McGrath spoke in The Oval in an event to encourage more children to go sports
McGrath believes that England's lack of trust with the bat is an important fac tor that could help to stay among the tourists Best chance of success in England for the first time in almost two decades.
& # 39; Without a doubt [it is the best chance]. England is not playing with confidence. If Australia can reach the summit early, it will have a huge impact, & he said to Sportsmail.
& # 39; Australia has the opportunity to win this series. Both bowling attacks are of quality, so they are going to play well. It will depend on hitting for who is going to win instead of bowling. & # 39;
Australia's captain Tim Paine poses with the belly in front of the Ashes opener on Thursday
England's performance with the bat was their Achilles heel over the past few years and it reappeared in the test match with the Lord of Ireland, where they were thrown out in the first 85 innings.
It was the fourth time since 2016 that they had lost all 10 wickets in one session. It came with the test debut of Jason Roy, who played as an opener in the winning team of the ODI World Cup and is seen as the last attempt to repair a creaking top order.
Roy reacted with a liquid 72 runs of 78 balls in the second innings after being five in the first, but his fellow top order batter Rory Burns and Joe Denly hit only 45 between them in the win over Ireland .
McGrath sees the vulnerability of the England three as a weakness to exploit, claiming that although they have the ability to compete at test level, they can be exposed spiritually.
England struggled with the bat in their test match against Ireland last week in Lord & # 39; s
& # 39; The job of the fast bowler is to get rid of the top order, those are the match-ups you want to win & # 39; , he added.
& # 39; If Australia wins, they will win this series. They must choose the top three, stay on top of them and remove them as quickly as possible.
THE ASHES 2019
First test – Edgbaston, August 1-5
Second test – Lord & # 39; s, 14- August 18
Third test – Headingley, 22-26 August
Fourth test – Old Trafford, 4-8 September
Fifth test – The Oval, 12-16 September
]
& # 39; In Cummings, Hazlewood and Starc … with those guys it will be hard to get started and if you have no confidence, it will get worse. If England starts off badly, it will be a tough series for them – but if they start well, that's exactly what England needs.
& # 39; Everyone [in the squad] is good enough to play Test cricket, it's just how they handle it mentally. They don't have many options unless someone performs incredibly well at the provincial level. But then choosing someone out of the blue, throwing them into a test series the size of the Ashes … that's an incredibly difficult thing to do. & # 39;
McGrath, who spoke at a Thinkmarkets event in the Oval to help promote cricket among young people, is notorious for his frequent 5-0 whitewash predictions in favor of Australia, but despite his high Expectations for a win in England, he admitted that he wanted to see the outcome of the Edgbaston test, an area that Australia often struggles before calling.
Captain Joe Root from England wants the Ash after a humiliating 4-0 loss in 2017-18
Even the offer of a 4-1 to Australia scoreboard could not tempt the former fast bowler to make a prediction to do.
& # 39; No. I don't like to say that Australia lost a test before it even started! I find it hard to say that we're going to draw one, so I think we're going to lose one for the series, so I can't get myself to that. I sit on the fence and look after the first test before I make my predictions.
& # 39; If Australia can win that first test on a ground like England is really good, it will be a huge one. If they win, I support 5-0! & # 39;

The Ten Best Films of 2018
As one of our greatest poets once sang, the times they are a-changin'. While certain film institutions seem intent on defying the incurrence of streaming cinema, Netflix had their best year to date, releasing three of what we consider the greatest movies of 2018, and landing the top two spots. How this will impact moviemaking going forward isn’t clear yet, but it almost certainly will. Once again, our list is a wonderful blend of new voices like those of Boots Riley and Sandi Tan, alongside that of established veterans like Spike Lee and Alfonso Cuarón. We chose films from around the world this year, including entries from Korea, Poland, Mexico, and an anthology about the Old West. From documentary to comedy, drama to Western, Paul Schrader to James Baldwin—this may be our most diverse list to date, indicating the breadth of great art we saw in 2018.
About the rankings: We asked our regular film critics and assistant editors to submit top ten lists from this great year, and then consolidated them with a traditional points system—10 points for #1, 9 points for #2, etc.—resulting in the list below, with a new entry for each awarded film. We’ll publish each critic’s individual list as the week goes on. Come back for more.
10. “Cold War”
Inside the Iron Curtain of the 1950s, a rising composer named Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) and his producer, Irena (Agata Kulesza), scour the Polish countrysides and mountaintops for folk songs to bring back to Soviet bloc cities. While auditioning peasant singers to perform these folk numbers on tour, Wiktor’s eyes meet those of a confident and mysterious blond, Zula (Joanna Kulig). He’s quickly taken with her bold presence, and she soon follows his lead into a tempestuous relationship that will stretch years, borders and other partners.
There may only be a handful of times in life you lock eyes with someone like Wiktor and Zula do in Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.” You remember where you two met in that moment, what that person wore, who else was there and how you hung on their every word as you tried to hide how intensely you both looked at each other. Some details of the day fade, others grow sharper as you replay the scene over and over—even if that person is no longer in your life.
Beyond its lovestruck appeal, the gorgeous black-and-white cinematography of “Cold War” enchants viewers with dazzling compositions, bringing intimate moments to an epic scale. Almost every note of the movie’s eclectic soundtrack—which ranges from forlorn Polish folk tunes to sultry French jazz—aches as much as the lovers’ wistful stares. They are echoes of the way Humphrey Bogart looked at Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” how Omar Sharif looked at Julie Christie in “Doctor Zhivago” and the glances Maggie Cheung gave Tony Leung during “In the Mood for Love.”
Under the lens of an unromantic reality, it’s possible to view these two lovers as mere hopeless mismatches. But in Pawlikowski’s film, there is a tragic beauty in Wiktor and Zula’s doomed-to-fail love. "Cold War" sympathizes with those who know it is a blessing and a curse to have feelings outlive an affair. (Monica Castillo)
9. “Burning”
Cats. Wells. Borders. Victims. Killers. There is a lot that’s indistinct and even invisible in the discomforting thriller “Burning” from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong. Loosely based on Barn Burning, a short story by Haruki Murakami, “Burning” rises from the ashes of unspoken battles and deeply held grudges between friends, genders and those that dwell on the opposite sides of the socio-economic tracks so casually that you wonder for a while where this devious suspense, co-written by Lee and Jungmi Oh, might take you. Trust me when I say, it will neither escort you somewhere commonplace nor answer your burning questions like an ordinary movie would—this elegantly calibrated chiller led by a pitch-perfect ensemble is more about the search amid blurring boundaries than reaching an orderly conclusion.
It all begins by a chance encounter that unfolds as uneventfully as any pivotal occurrence that would follow it. Working as a promo rep handing out raffle tickets, the young, bouncy Hae-mi (Jong-seo Jeon) spots and greets the aspiring writer Jong-su (Ah-In Yoo), a guy she knew from childhood. He doesn’t remember her, so she randomly mentions she’s had plastic surgery for beauty. Boyish to an extreme, awkward and clearly taken by Hae-mi, Jong-su follows her into her tiny rental room where the two have sex after Hae-mi (again, abruptly) reminds him he once called her ugly. Taking care of his burdened father’s farm close to the North Korea border, Jong-su finds his bliss cut short when Hae-mi leaves for an overseas trip, asks him to feed her cat Boil in her absence and comes back with the handsome, wealthy and enigmatic Ben (Steven Yeun) who seems to be everything Jong-su is not. Ben lives in an expensive apartment, drives a Porsche and (to Jong-su’s intense distaste) listens to music while cooking pasta.
A virtuoso of slow-burns (“Secret Sunshine” and “Poetry” among them), Lee Chang-dong patiently folds in mysteries as well as themes around gender and social class into “Burning,” while occasionally playing up a comedic tone that strengthens the unclassifiable nature of the film. Is the arsonist womanizer Ben a version of Patrick Bateman driven to insanity by capitalism? Does Hae-mi really have a cat or is she settling scores with the boy who was once cruel to her? Does Jong-su suffer from an overambitious writer’s imagination or is Ben’s uncanny smile really as condescending as it looks? When Jong-su acts upon his justified instincts on a bitterly cold, snow-covered day, you will inhale the frosty air with shivers down your spine, feeling only certain that “Burning” is one of those all-timers that begs to be re-watched repeatedly; a true one-of-a-kind with a lot on its mind. And Steven Yeun? His dismissive yawning is the stuff of (alleged) villains for the ages. (Tomris Laffly)
8. “BlacKkKlansman”
Every scene in “BlacKkKlansman” is practically watermarked with “A Spike Lee Joint” in the bottom right corner. This true story is the perfect vehicle for Lee's penchant for hilariously pitch black humor and it also allows him to settle an old score. Taking Godard’s advice about using a new movie to criticize another movie, Lee aims squarely at D.W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation,” ridiculing it relentlessly wherever appropriate. Not only does the film appear as a snarky punchline during a Klan rally, Lee also uses Griffith’s own devices against him by structuring Ron Stallworth’s last reel race against time as a thrilling, Klan-centric montage that serves as a corrective to Griffith’s racist imagery. This sequence deviates from the real-life story Lee is telling, so it was deemed controversial. Surely Lee relished the thought of this perception. Because when Griffith dabbled in propaganda, it was “history written with lightning.” When Lee mocked that dabbling, it was heresy written with politics. And it was just as effective!
John David Washington and Adam Driver give stellar performances, though the latter is surprisingly the film’s biggest proponent of identity introspection. While Washington hides his identity behind a telephone and a voice, Driver hides his in plain sight, thereby incurring more collateral damage. And though the plot comments on racism and anti-Semitism, Lee builds a reality-based trap door into his cinematic contraption, one that opens as soon as he invokes his trademark people mover shot. Suddenly, we’re thrust into the terrifying, present day fate that befell Heather Heyer, whose appearance at the Charlottesville protest ended with her death. This real-life footage is a provocation, but it’s one bursting with truth about the state of racism in America and is therefore not exploitative. Lee dedicated “BlacKkKlansman” to Heyer, and the film’s rise in the award season coincides with the recent guilty verdict delivered to the man who killed her. This is one of Lee's most urgent and timely films. It's also one of his best. (Odie Henderson)
7. “Annihilation”
In 2018, Stanley Kubrick’s landmark science fiction film “2001: A Space Odyssey” turned 50. That same year, writer-director Alex Garland released “Annihilation,” a rare film that lives up to the totality of what made “2001” so revered and valuable, rather than merely imitating certain aspects of its design, structure, or tone. It’s one of the great science fiction films of recent years, easily the equal of “Ex Machina,” “Arrival,” “Under the Skin” and “Blade Runner 2049,” and superior to all of them (except “Under the Skin”) in one respect: it encourages multiple interpretations and deeply personal responses, while waving off any attempt to simplistically “explain” what the audience has seen. Adapted from the first of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach novels, the movie structured as a series of discrete set pieces, complete with Kubrickian chapter titles (a la “The Shining” as well as “2001”). If you watch it more than once—as you should; it deepens with every viewing—you start to see it as a set of thought prompts rather than a traditional narrative, though one that’s anchored to strong, simple characterizations and full performances.
The heroine is Army soldier turned biologist Lena (Natalie Portman), whose husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) went missing for a year during a top secret mission, then briefly, miraculously returned to her shortly before puking up blood and being rushed to the intensive care unit at a top secret research facility in a swamp near the Florida coastline. The area was impacted by a meteor that created a “Shimmer”—a demarcated zone where the rules of evolution seem to have gone haywire, integrating the DNA of plants, mammals and reptiles that were thought incompatible, and killing off all the members of expeditions sent to explore the place (Kane is the only survivor, though we immediately sense that the person returned from the Shimmer isn’t actually Kane). Lena joins up with four other women—Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Thorensen (Gina Rodriguez), Radek (Tessa Thompson), and Sheppard (Tuva Novotny)—to journey into the Shimmer and attempt to understand it.
But there are limits to understanding, and the key to the excellence of Garland’s film is its determination to pose questions without supplying answers. I hosted a screening of the film back in March—my third viewing—and discussed it with the audience afterward, and together we came up with at least nine different answers to the question, “What is this movie about?”
It’s possible to piece together what happened, event-wise, to everyone in the expedition, and how one event might’ve led to another, culminating in the finale, an audacious two-character confrontation that feels like a cross between a modern dance performance and a spectral assault. But once you’ve done that, you’re still left with the question of what it all meant, and you’re on your own. Which is as it should be, because in life, you’re on your own, too. (Matt Zoller Seitz)
6. “Shirkers”
One indication of why this is a near-great film: although it is a relatively straightforward and coherent narrative account—albeit one so surprising as to be, weirdly, equally exhilarating as it is upsetting—almost everyone who watches it has a different idea of its theme. Is it about toxic males holding women down? The challenges facing a female artist? The difficulty of making art in Singapore?
Sandi Tan’s documentary memoir/detective story cannily maintains a core pose of modesty while insinuatingly exploring a series of big ideas. Serving as her own narrator, Tan tells of her 1990s time as an artistically ambitious teen in Singapore, under the spell of maverick filmmakers like David Lynch and believing she had found a cinematic partner in crime with an older man from the States, a teacher and self-styled would-be auteur named Georges Cardona. Sandi forges alliances with the smaller-than-a-handful number of like-minded conspirators on her not-yet-economically-booming island to make her film. A film that Cardona absconds with, leaving behind no explanation or apology.
The rediscovery of the footage in 2010 made this movie possible. But it didn’t determine this movie’s power. Even if it took Tan several decades to realize it, “Shirkers” proves her a born moviemaker. (Glenn Kenny)
5. “If Beale Street Could Talk”
When I interviewed writer/director Barry Jenkins about “Moonlight,” we talked about the movie’s haunting score, composed by Nicholas Britell. “Many directors would use songs of the era to place the audience in the film’s three time periods,” I said. “Two things,” he replied. “First, we could not afford the rights to those songs. But more important, I believe these characters deserve a full orchestral score.”
I thought of those words as I watched Jenkins’ latest film, “If Beale Street Could Talk,” based on the 1974 novel by James Baldwin. Or, I should say, it did not feel like I was watching the film. It was more like I was immersed in it. The entire theme of the movie could be, “These characters deserve a full orchestral score” along with the highest level of every other creative and aesthetic element available to a filmmaker, from Baldwin’s lyrical words to the luscious cinematography of “Moonlight’s” James Laxton, another gorgeous score by Britell, and performances of infinite sensitivity and humanity.
“If Beale Street Could Talk” succeeds brilliantly at one of cinema’s most central functions: a love story with sizzling chemistry between two impossibly beautiful people. Stephan James (“Race”) and newcomer KiKi Layne are 2018’s most compelling romantic couple. Their relationship is in every way the heart of this story, the reason we feel so sharply about the injustice that befalls James' Fonny, the film's most undeniable signifier of generations of institutional racism. We see that most powerfully when Regina King, as the girl’s mother, looks in the mirror as she prepares like a matador entering the bullring for a meeting that could make all the difference for the couple. She cannot expect much, but she has to try. Throughout the movie, there is resignation and there are diminished hopes but there is also resilience. And “Beale Street” reminds us that there is also undiminished and imperishable love: romantic love, the love of parents and siblings, even an unexpected encounter with a warmhearted landlord. There is the love Baldwin and Jenkins have for these characters. And, most of all, it reminds us that this is a story that deserves to be told with the best that movies have to offer, including a full orchestral score. (Nell Minow)
4. “First Reformed”
Ethan Hawke just gets better with age, as he casts aside the boyish good looks and swaggering sense of rebellion that made him both a superstar and an indie darling in the 1990s for more mature, fascinatingly flawed characters. He's well into his 40s now and letting the passage of time show on his face, in his demeanor and in the complicated men he's choosing to play on screen. In Paul Schrader, Hawke is ideally matched with a filmmaker whose own work has only grown deeper and more resonant over the past several decades. "First Reformed" feels like a culmination of sorts for both the writer/director and his star. It has echoes of past efforts from both while it also wrestles with bracingly contemporary themes of personal responsibility, stewardship and activism.
Hawke stars as Reverend Ernst Toller, a country priest in upstate New York whose involvement in the lives of a married couple in his congregation steadily causes him to lose his grip. With heavy shades of the iconic character he created in Travis Bickle, Schrader vividly presents a man who's grappling with reality and his perceived role within it. He says so much within the film's quiet stillness and precise austerity as well as with masterful narration that offers a glaring contrast between Toller's journals and the truth. "First Reformed" represents the best work of Hawke's lengthy and eclectic career, and it's a welcome return to form for the veteran Schrader. But it also allows Amanda Seyfried to show a dramatic depth we haven't seen from her before as the woman who could be Toller's salvation or his undoing. That sense of ambiguity only becomes more gripping as the film progresses, leading to an ending that's boldly open for interpretation but is undeniably daring and haunting. (Christy Lemire)
3. “Sorry to Bother You”
Like many good dark comedies (ex: "Office Space," "Bamboozled") the hysterically caustic "Sorry to Bother You" feels like a full-blown panic attack. The film's class conscious anxiety (and mordant sense of optimism) is also contagious, as it is in movies like "Starship Troopers" and "Putney Swope."
With "Sorry to Bother You," writer/director Boots Riley takes credible, if pointedly exaggerated sources of social, racial, and economic tension and exaggerates them beyond the realm of our known experiences. At the same time: Riley's thrillingly inventive conception of the rise-fall-rise-fall-and-rise-again character arc of call center worker drone Cassius "Cash" Green (an incredible Lakeith Stanfield) always feels real enough, even when it takes a hard turn into (what is currently) the realm of science-fiction.
In that sense: "Sorry to Bother You" is also a great American social critique (ex: "A Face in the Crowd," "Idiocracy") since it teaches viewers how to watch it. Riley handily realizes Francois Truffaut's goal of introducing four ideas per minute—and they're each fully-realized and easily understood. That's a major talent when your film essentially weaponizes audience surrogate Cash's relatability. We grow more and more aware of the unbearable heaviness of Cash's existence as a young, black, and talented man. First he stops thinking of himself as a barnacle on an unfathomable ship of industry and starts to see himself as a major player. Then he stops letting himself be seduced by the trappings of his newfound financial success and starts to focus on the application of his talents. Finally, Cash stops fooling himself into thinking that he's just a messenger of utilitarian progress and becomes a victim of his own self-deluded progress. But by then it's too late.
Or not. It's late, but it ain't never. (Simon Abrams)
2. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”
Like so much of the best work of Joel & Ethan Coen, their latest film is a tough one to describe. On the surface, it’s an old-fashioned anthology piece, a reworking of what was once an idea for a TV series into a collection of Old West vignettes, playing out like a storybook. But that sells it short. It sells short how each narrative feels like it flows into the next. It sells the short the mastery of tone both within each individual story and tying together the overall piece. It sells short the way the Coens intertwine their vision of the Old West with a dissection on the very practice of storytelling and their roles as beloved storytellers themselves. And it sells short the incredible individual pleasures within each of the six short films, all of them bursting with gorgeous cinematography, memorable performances, and fascinating subtext. It’s the best western in years because it’s both completely knowledgeable about the tropes of the genre and able to subvert them at the same time.
Take the opening short, the one that gives the film its name. A singing cowboy plods through the desert, warbling a tune to the rhythm of his horse’s footsteps. He speaks directly to the camera, showing us that he’s been labeled a misanthrope—a title that has been incorrectly applied to the Coens’ dark sense of humor on more than one occasion. This leads one to presume that what follows is designed to defy or subvert that label. But that’s not really what happens. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is constantly going left when you expect it to go right—and then making you feel dumb for thinking it would ever go right.
It’s also a fascinating dissection of death—from enemies, former friends, and even by one’s own hand. Death comes for everyone. It’s a theme woven through all six vignettes, and it’s telling that the final piece is about a pair of men who distract their targets with stories. If filmmakers have ever put themselves on screen more bluntly, I can’t think of when. While the story is unfolding, there’s something else happening underneath or off to the side. Joel and Ethan Coen are two of our most impressive cinematic magicians. You’re so carefully enjoying what one hand does that you don’t realize how much they’re doing with the other one until it's over. And then you just want to watch it all over again. (Brian Tallerico)
1. “Roma”
Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma" takes place in the Mexico City neighborhood where he grew up in the 1970s. Filmed in vivid black-and-white (Cuarón shot it himself), "Roma" features long long takes, the camera moving horizontally through a house, across fields, into the sea, down city streets, creating a sense of reality so intense it almost tips over into dream. The film's central figure is Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a Mixtec woman working for an upper-class family as a nanny and a maid (she is based on the woman who raised Cuarón). Surrounding Cleo is a world of political upheaval, seething student protests, marital strife, economic stresses, and cops in riot gear. In another film, these events would be center stage, but in "Roma," they drift in the background, seen through windows, heard through open doors, as Cleo strolls by, or around, trying to manage her own life, enduring stress and doing her best. "Roma" is pierced with issues of class, privilege, ethnicity, and resurrects a time and place, a whole era, with details that sometimes overwhelm, like a wave roaring into shore. Swarms of extras live out their lives in complicated vignettes unfurling behind the action, seen briefly as the camera moves by, gone in a flash. The city, the house, the village, all bristle with life. This is a very personal film for Cuarón, and "Roma" is both a determined act of memory and a work of powerful tribute. (Sheila O’Malley)

Iron-willed Smithies on the crest of an unending wave
Iron-willed Smithies on the crest of an unending wave “I came here actually in 1998 to coach and play at the University of Pretoria. Fell in love with the place and moved out here in 2000″ – Karen Smithies. © Wisden India Among the many people sitting in the stands at the SuperSport Park in Centurion when South Africa were beating India by 135 runs to take a series-winning lead, was one very interested person. Much more than a spectator, but neither South African, nor Indian. Karen Smithies is the manager of the Titans, the domestic franchise whose home ground is the SuperSport Park. A team so strong that seven of their players featured in the XI for the Test: Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Morne Morkel and Lungisani Ngidi. On the bench, was Chris Morris, making it eight players in the squad. Dale Steyn plays for the franchise too. Being the go-to person for a franchise with such a galaxy of stars would have been a sort of career-high for most people. Smithies is not most people though. And she has something in cricket none of the illustrious names around her do: a World Cup winner’s medal. Smithies is the former England Women’s captain, who played 15 Tests and 69 One-Day Internationals from 1986 till 2000. In 1993, she led England to victory in the tournament at home. In 2017, she was at Lord’s to witness Anya Shrubsole deliver the trophy for her team against Mithali Raj’s India, completing an evolutionary circle for women’s cricket. But first things first. How is a former England Women’s captain the Titans’ manager in Centurion? When it’s put to her that we generally see the reverse – South Africans going to England – she laughs. “Well it’s 18 years ago now since I left the UK,” Smithies tells Wisden India. “I came here actually in 1998 to coach and play at the University of Pretoria. Fell in love with the place and moved out here in 2000. I landed up at SuperSport Park in 2003 coaching women, but I’ve been with the Titans now since 2006. I go once a year to see the family, but otherwise, I’m a resident here now. “Cricket’s been part of my life since I was a small child, so it’s great to be part of it. And I work with so many great guys here at the Titans,” she continues. “To work with the likes of AB, Morne – guys who were coming through when I first started. It’s a special part of my journey here at the Titans. Dale Steyn started here, and I’ve had the privilege to work with some of the great players of South African cricket. Mark Boucher, for example, is the coach, and my boss. It’s a privilege to see how he goes about his business. The memories of some of the great players she has seen and the ones making their way up is something she treasures. “AB was different. He was already earmarked. He went very quickly. Morne Morkel made his debut for the Titans just as I started, in 2006. He was very nervous about bowling a no-ball, and what does he do with his first ball in domestic cricket? He bowls a no-ball! “For me now, seeing Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi, two outstanding gentlemen and two fantastic cricketers, get debuts was pretty special for us as well. It’s a special place SuperSport Park that has produced a lot of Protea cricketers.” But for Smithies, this is just the second half of her cricketing life. The first was probably even more eventful. She’s played in an era when women still had to wear skirts and seen the change to trousers. She burnt a bat with Belinda Clark at Lord’s to mark the beginning of the Women’s Ashes. She was there when Rachel Heyhoe-Flint used to sell chocolates and raffle tickets to raise funds so that women could play the sport. She’s been to two tours of India, and taken part in one of the most thrilling women’s Tests ever, which England won by two runs. “It went down to the final ball,” she remembers. “And there was an lbw decision. I took a gamble with the last over, it was quite a slow, turning wicket but I brought on the left-arm pace of Jo Chamberlain. She bowled a good over and off the last ball of the over [actually the third ball], we all went up for the lbw and it was given. So it was a fantastic game of cricket actually.” Karen Smithies burnt a bat with Belinda Clark at Lord’s to mark the beginning of the Women’s Ashes. © Wisden India Set 128 for victory, India were all out for 125 in 38.3 overs in what was the second Test of the series. This after Neetu David had taken 8 for 53 in England’s second innings, setting India a very gettable target. “We were in big trouble throughout the Test actually,” says Smithies. One of those where you were down and out and then you managed to scrape and turn it around a little bit. So it just to-ed and fro-ed all the way through.” Smithies has fond memories of India, both in 1995 and 1997, though she had her share of adventures too. “As a cricketer, to play in India is something every cricketer should do,” she says. “We’d have good crowds, and it’s nice to have a knowledgeable crowd. I loved India, and to play in different conditions. And we did have a lot of different conditions. “For food, I was given a little trick. An old soldier that I knew was based in India. And he said, ‘To look after yourself, just take a little tot of brandy every night, a little cap. And you will be fine!’ I lost a lot of weight there. I basically survived on potatoes that were in the curry, bananas, poppadum and naan bread. That was just about my diet while I was there. But thankfully I was good. “In Pune, we played an ODI and it got a little volatile. Claire Taylor got a bang on the head from someone who’d thrown something from the crowd, and we had to stay in the changing rooms for about three hours after the game because the crowd would not disperse. That was a tricky stay for us, but I suppose it all added to the experience.” It was a different era then. “I played in skirts from 1986 to 1997. And 1997 was the first year that we brought in the trousers,” smiles Smithies. “In India, it’s not very pleasant because you’re diving around on the field and the heat and the dust… hated it (wearing the skirt) actually! But that was the call of the day, so we had to go by it. It wasn’t very comfortable, and it wasn’t very good to look at either. Thankfully 1997 saw the change.” The next year also saw the launch of the Women’s Ashes. The men’s trophy is said to have the ashes of a burnt bail. The women burnt something more substantial. “We burnt a bat. This was at Lord’s,” says Smithies, pointing to a photo of Belinda Clark and her burning the bat, flanked by Roger Knight, the MCC president then, and the England manager. Women cricketers today are still not near the earning level of the men, but they are far removed from their predecessors at least. “The great Enid Bakewell, who I played all my cricket with in Nottinghamshire, and Rachel Heyhoe-Flint – they used to sell chocolate to raise funds for our club,” recounts Smithies. “Sell raffle tickets to get money for training facilities. I also did a sponsored walk if I remember, from Lord’s to the Oval and back. Again pioneered by Rachel Heyhoe-Flint just to raise awareness and money. That’s what we had to do, you know. It was part and parcel. “I know that back in the day, 1986 onwards, a lot of the Indian players worked for Railways I believe, and were given time off to play cricket,” she adds. “But I don’t think they had a lot of support, the conditions, the facilities or the money to do what they wanted to. Although they had some very good quality players. Since then there has been a lot more women’s cricket, and the ICC have really put in a lot of effort into the game. They play more competitive cricket than we did on a regular basis, which also helps the momentum of it.” One of the great showcases for how the women’s game has changed was the Women’s World Cup in 2017, whose final Smithies attended. “The game has evolved beyond recognition. I wish I was playing now in this era, with the opportunities that they get,” she smiles. “We were amateurs, we didn’t get paid. Most of the early tours we went to, we paid for ourselves pretty much. But now look, the top international women cricketers now are full-time. It gives them time to train, just concentrate on the cricket, which is a huge difference. And of course T20 cricket has also made a difference to their hitting areas, their power. I would love to have played a T20 game.” “To have 26,000 people at Lord’s for the women’s final, I never thought I’d see that. And just the atmosphere around the ground and the game was a credit to women’s cricket.” – Karen Smithies. © Getty Images For Smithies, the advent of T20 and particularly the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia, have played key roles in pushing the game’s popularity steadily upwards, until it all came together at the 2017 World Cup, whose final has been hailed as perhaps the grandest showcase for women’s cricket. “Absolutely,” agrees Smithies. “To have 26,000 people at Lord’s for the women’s final, I never thought I’d see that. And just the atmosphere around the ground and the game was a credit to women’s cricket. It was televised, most of it. So a lot of people could see it. A lot of the games were close as well. “The other thing is the women’s Big Bash League in Australia. Those kinds of tournaments are doing the women’s game so much good. I know that Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp and Mignon du Preez are over there now. It’s like the IPL, you’re playing with and against the best players in the world. It can only do your game good.” Smithies only went to the final though, thus missing out on both semifinals, which were classics in their own right. The first one would have been more poignant for Smithies, with England squeaking home by two wickets, with two balls to spare – against South Africa. Who would she have been supporting? The question is followed by the ready, and infectious, laughter Smithies has. “Umm… Obviously, England because that’s where my home is. And home is where the heart is. But I was also keen to see some of the South African girls that I know, they also put in a very, very good performance. And again England in the final, were up against it for quite some time and India really should have taken it. But you know these big-pressure days bring and with Shrubsole doing her in-duckers and a couple of wickets falling, momentum went back to England.” The title triumph brought back the memories of her own moment of glory in 1993, when she lifted the World Cup as the England captain. “In 1993, women’s cricket was run by the Women’s Cricket Association. And they really had to rely on donations to stage the event,” she says. “We won, against all odds, I believe. It was live on TV that afternoon, and John Major was there, he was Prime Minister at the time. So there was a lot of high profile to it and it really gave women’s cricket a leverage. And five years later, the Women’s Cricket Association merged with the ECB. And now the World Cup was run by the ICC. “Look in 1993, we stayed in Wellington College. In dormitories. And in 2017 they probably stayed at The Hilton in London. We had to do our own washing, things like that. The game has evolved immeasurably over the years, and quite rightly too because there’s some good players out there.” The win though did produce a moment that remains etched in minds for many, though its one Smithies would rather forget about. Flushed with victory, she told Derek Pringle, the allrounder, that since the men’s team didn’t seem to be winning anything, perhaps the women could teach them a thing or two? “I think I got a bit cocky at that stage because we were doing very well, and the men under Michael Atherton were down and out,” she says, eyes twinkling. “It was a rushed comment, and one which I wished I never made. It was probably something like “You can learn how to play from us”. Most likely. Bit cocky, eh? But it was just one of those heat-of-the-moment things. I was 24 years old, I was on the crest of a wave after winning the World Cup and… I lost it, to be honest!” There’s no losing it now for Smithies, whether in her office sorting through mail for the Titans’ cricketers, in the open-air press box of the SuperSport Park ready to lend a helping hand to journalists, bustling about with the thousand and one administrative tasks she has to attend to, or just sitting back quietly and enjoying the game to which she has given two careers and is still not done.

Cricket News: England selector Ed Smith tips Jason Roy to be Ashes opener
That's enough to bask in the glory of the World Cup, it's Ashes time. That was the message when England named three potential debutants – Jason Roy, Lewis Gregory and Olly Stone – for an inaugural test against Ireland which is basically the practice for the big one against Australia.
This summer of all cricket summers, England barely allowed to catch a breath after the tumultuous events of Lord & # 39; s before the national selector Ed Smith turned up in Canterbury on Wednesday to remind us of the old enemy who waited for the red ball half of this very important season
It is a shame that a ridiculously debilitating schedule – five axis tests being crammed in just over six weeks – does not allow the country to enjoy the hardly credible World Cup Final any longer , but that's the game obsession with packed programs & # 39; s.

It is almost as if Ireland, who is England too is faced with a four-day test that begins on the following Wednesday from the Lord, a necessary inconvenience is to avoid all thoughts and planning on the first ash test in Edgbaston on August 1.
To that end, England will have to do without Mark Wood, man of the competition in England & # 39; s Last Test in St. Lucia , for at least the first two Ashes games and probably more because of his side injury, t while Jofra Archer is against the clock for the race to be fit for Birmingham.
But Jimmy Anderson was included in a 13-man squad to face Ireland after he made good progress with his calf injury and allowed to play, with a limit on his workload in a six-man attack.
Perhaps the most significant move was expected – Roy confirmed as the
It says a lot about Roy's scarcity of alternatives. Jos Buttler followed by being picked up for Test cricket on the back of his white ball shape, but, really,
Roy has the ability to take a test away from Australia in a single session and faces Ireland, although he has not fully recovered from the hamstring injury, simply because he needs some sort of red-ball practice before facing Mitchell Starc.

LEWIS GREGORY
Gregory has the S omerset attack led fantastically this summer, with 44 wickets at 13.88. The 27-year-old captures the English lions against Australia XI in Canterbury and was last included in the senior squad for an ODI in Ireland in 2015.
]
& # 39; The only question with Jason was when it was the ideal would be time to bring him in, & # 39; said Smith. & # 39; I talked extensively with Joe Root months ago about the scenario in which Jason closed the World Cup full of confidence and full runs and went straight into the ashes and that is what we do with him.
& # 39; We & # 39; ve grown up completely in white-ball cricket and he is a more complete player than he has ever been. There has never been any doubt about his talent, courage and presence on the fold. It really feels like a good time for him to come in. "
Gregory is also certainly looking at a nine-hour bowling all-rounder as a reward for a consistently impressive form for Somerset and the Lions – although at 27 he may not have the pace for an extensive testing career. Stone is bowling back for Warwickshire after a back fracture has shortened his engagement with England in the winter and is now a surprising choice.
Stone will complete the trio of debutants if England decides to Anderson or Chris Woakes In the meantime, Jack Leach & # 39; s presence in the 13 is a reminder to Moeen Ali that he must regain his hitting feeling if he is not allowed to lose his test site and his 50-plus.
By letting Ben Stokes and Buttler rest while Smith admitted that coach Trevor Bayliss had a word with Jonny Bairstow, who was a bit ahead of the last World Cup, to see if they were wanted to add to the sidelines. He didn't do it.
Now Bairstow has withheld the gloves from Ben Foakes, he is not going to let them go, and Foakes does not even make Ashes training camp hopeful that England will compete at St George's Park this weekend

A large number of England greats met in London on Wednesday for the premiere of The Edge, a film about the side that rose to number 1 in the world in 2011 – by Felix White (soundtrack), Swann, Barney Douglas (director), Anderson, Collingwood, Panesar, Bresnan, Bell, Trott, Strauss, Cook and Finn.
But the fact is that Bairstow is a world-class batsman with the ability to solve England's problems in the top three, where Burns and Joe Denly, as well as the untested Roy,
Foakes has not only proven to be the best wicket-keeper in the world, but is arguably a good enough batter to be a better tall.
The big shame is that Archer is not fit to join the debutants after his spectacular World Cup introduction, but England has shown good management to let the 24-year-old superstar rest and recuperate in Barbados instead from St George & # 39; s Park.
& # 39; We are not sure when Jofra will be available for selection again, but he has a fight when he is fit, & Smith added. & # 39; The medical staff is everywhere in the situation.
& # 39; He ran a side strain, but continued to perform at the highest level at the World Cup, there will be full attention to get him back as soon as possible. & # 39;
For the time being, England should have enough to beat Ireland and get some very important thousands in the legs of their bowlers, with experience of the red ball on the highest podium for Roy.
World Cup? Which World Cup?

Jason Roy and Jofra Archer favourites to open with bat and ball in the Ashes
It was the day that the English World Cup campaign was back on track after the nerves and problems of Trent Bridge.
And, perhaps more importantly, it was the day that England undoubtedly discovered their new opening stunner and bowler for the Ashes. teammate Rory Burns in Edgbaston to open the battle against Australia in the first test in August.

And there is even less doubt Jofra Arch there will be a new ball next to Jimmy Anderson
Not after the wonderful shows of the couple with bat and ball in Cardiff on Saturday to be sure that England would slip against Pakistan, it wasn't the complete crisis that would have brought defeat to Bangladesh.
It may be premature to think about what comes after this tumultuous summer, when the lively World Championship is still in its infancy, but the sight of Australia in the Oval on Sunday was a reminder that there is still nothing is like the Ashes to whet English appetites.
And there would be nothing more inclined to excite that English audience than the sight of Roy bringing his destructive white-ball game to test cricket and bower bowling at 95 miles per hour against the old enemy later this summer.
Both were handed over by the ICC to minor crimes against Pakistan, but both were in their exciting best against Bangladesh, Roy sublime in beating 153 and Archer I have the fastest opening speech in English one-day history.
The result was a relaxation of the fear of the English World Cup and a huge promise for their future with the red balls.

Long ago were the days that potential test players had to prove themselves with a red b before they could be called up by England in the ultimate format. call to bring Jos Buttler back to Test cricket last summer, although he had barely played in the first-class game and now Roy, with five scores of 50 or more in his last six one-day internationals, certainly looks to follow the same
In reality, it has been a long time. Paul Farbrace, the assistant coach who has done so much to get England where they are now in the white ball game before moving to Warwickshire, has long thought of Roy as a potential test batsman and told the BBC in his
Graham Thorpe, who replaced Mark Ramprakash as the British bat-coach and retains his role as a white-ball, is a great advocate of Roy in the long form while Sportsmail revealed that England came to pick him up in the neighborhood to tour him through Sri Lanka last winter before finally settling for Joe Denly as their extra batsman
There is no doubt a confrontation with Mitchell Starc with a swinging ball from the Duke and four slips and a well in Edgbaston will be another kettle of everything that Roy experienced, but I have the ability to take a test away from Australia in one destructive day
& # 39; I & # 39; I said this before, but I think Jason can play Test cricket at some point, & said the English captain Eoin Morgan after Saturday's pounding victory.
& # 39; He has all the qualities to be a test cricket player, whether it is or in line. & # 39;
As well as the Archer elevation.
It seems to be certain now, starting with the inaugural test of England against Ireland in Lord & # 39; s in July that precedes the Ashes. It is not surprising that the new recruit from England turns out to be the real deal.

Mark Wood darkened his teammate Archer by sending one delivery to 95.7 mph teammate Archer by one delivery 95.7 mph
England would always follow him quickly to the World Cup and were already talking to the Ashes before he had thrown a ball for his adopted country.
But what's exciting is that Jason Gillespie, his coach at Sussex, believes that Archer is an even better red-ball cricket player than a white ball.
How exciting it was to see Archer, with the Welsh wind on his back, coneing so fast but with so much control at Cardiff.
And how potentially enormous it was to see Mark Wood obscuring by bowling a delivery at 95.7 mph compared to Archer & # 39; s high of 95.1.
& # 39; I am a bit faster than him, & # 39; Archer smiled, warmly received in the dressing room in England, when Wood's name was mentioned.
& # 39; None of my speeds entered the scoreboard today. Woody & # 39; s only. That is actually a bit biased. "
The prospect of Archer and Wood, as long as he can keep fit and operate against Australia at the same time, is a tempting one. And intriguing for the selectors of England.

Anderson's teacher is sure to play, but all the positions of Chris Woakes, who are so far expensive in this tournament and even Stuart Broad, are far from guaranteed.
& # 39; I'm not thinking about Test cricket yet, "Archer said diplomatically. & # 39; We need to do a job first. I worry about that later. & # 39;
England are worried about their next World Cup opponents, some West Ind on Friday. A great game for the Archer born in Barbados?
& # 39; It's just another game of cricket, the same as today and the same as the previous game, & # 39; he insisted.
I know them pretty well and I played with a few of their boys for the West Indies under 19 years old. It is good to play against them this time.
The feeling will not be mutual if he touches his belts again.
