Skin Tone: Pale, and no amount of sun can change that. She just gets burnt.

Eye color/shape: Her iris is a distinct grey (different from the Hyūga’s white) when the eyes are inactive, but her eye (save sclera) is ivy green when active. The ends of her eyes are slanted upwards, slightly, almost fox-like, after her Sage training.

Hair: Black, a tiny bit wavy. It reaches slightly below her elbows, though it was a shoulder-length bob before leaving it to grow when she became chūnin.

Hairstyle(s): Wears it down when outside duty; clasps it in a loose ponytail that she sweeps in front of her shoulder when in duty. Sports a long fringe that helps make her seal inconspicuous, but otherwise prefers her hair out of her face. When she advanced into chūnin, she began to instill chakra in her hair as a trap for anyone who grabs onto it – it marks them with trace amounts of her chakra and allows her to pin-point them quickly later on in the fight. When she sleeps she braids it sideways. In the lab, puts it up in a bun, no arguments.

Markings: Beside her left eye, where a variety of seals that suppressed the Ryokugan is imprinted, one after another. It’s been a ripple-patterned one currently, and has been the same for years. Her next longest had been one in her teenage years: a butterfly-patterned one.

Scars/Tattoos: A huge patch of darker skin on the side of her torso where Obito had punched a wooden branch through (broke and crushed the entire left side of her ribs—torn the diaphragm and grazed the stomach); another burn mark on her arm, below her ANBU tattoo, from Kakashi’s Raikiri, obtained on same occasion as the stomach wound; a diagonal slash scar (faded just a shade darker than her skin) running from collarbone to right breast, received from a Mist ninja in the above instance; faded scars on her body from accidents in training and combat, mostly on the back of her legs and the front of her arms; another jagged one from below her right eye to her cheek, fresh, from an unsuccessful attempt to disable her eyes during Obito’s personal invasion.

— Appearance —

Overall: Haiko is tall for a female, with a lithe, slender body build. Her looks are above average. Dresses conservative, unless required.

Clothing: Full-body ninja mesh, cotton sleeveless turtleneck and shorts, cotton elbow/knee warmers [color(s)—prussian blue/army green/dark grey/gun-metal/black] – For ease of movement. Ninja mesh is uncomfortable if worn against skin, so it goes over all the cotton. Cotton soaks up sweat well, is comfortable, flexible, and thin. Sometimes she wears elbow and knee warmers. The Sound cloak goes over all this. During her stint in the ANBU she wore the standard ANBU armor.

Fingerless gloves with Metal Guards – these are black as well, some dark gray to blend in better. She has about five pairs of these, all cotton with metal plates sewed onto the back of the hand for blocking, two pairs also feature metal knuckles. None of them feature any village sigil. All are worn for better grip on the leather of her sai.

She also has two specially made pairs that sport summoning seals on the palms, which summons her sai. Those are intricate seals, and she mostly used them during her time in ANBU to lighten her load, since if the fabric is torn, the seal becomes unusable.

Open-toe sandals – the standard Konoha issue shoes, black. Shin guards are sometimes there, depending on the mission.

As a child she wore yukata.

Over the years her clothing choice didn’t change drastically, the only change was that when she reached jōnin, she added a Cloak – worn over the above. Later became the standard attire of Sound ANBU. Worn it like a cape, fastened at the collar. All her gear is strapped under the cloak. The cloak is fastened at the front, but loose, for ease of access. Her arms are not normally in the sleeves. Her sai holsters—if she used them—are strapped to her back, the kunai and shuriken pouch strapped to her right thigh, both under the cloak. Her scrolls for storage is normally kept in the ninja pouch. The cloak does not interfere with her fighting, and if tugged hard enough, will unfasten so it’s unable to be used against its wearer.

For ANBU: ANBU (Captain) Mask — All ANBU masks are stored within a seal that’s placed on the ANBU operative’s dominant palm. Her mask is the fox, and the captain version has red marks around the eyes.

Before she’s made an official of Sound: Beige shirt and pants – a variation of the standard sound attire, complete with the purple sumo-wrestling waistband. She only wears this when she is doing open missions in the name of Sound. She still wears her mesh underneath the shirt.

Jōnin – She was first promoted to tokubetsu jōnin in the Leaf Jōnin exams during the war, for her kekkei genkai and highly specialized wartime ability but a lack of leadership ability. After ANBU, she took the exam again to be promoted to Jōnin, and got the position.

ANBU Captain — this was directly after the war. She showed the aptitude to operate both alone and in a team, and due to displaying a great capacity for leadership in the last vestiges of the war was selected for this position. Because of her kekkei genkai requiring her to be slotted with specific supplementary abilities for it to achieve its full potential, she was frequently assigned and re-assigned, and finally the Hokage simply appointed her the captain of a special Ryokugan oriented team.

Weakness: Genjutsu – if cast correctly, it forces her to stop, catch her breath and re-orientate herself, which breaks her chain attacks and opens her up to attacks. She deals with this by making sure she picks out the potential genjutsu users first, and never overcommits.

Neon colors – Her eyes are generally sensitive to loud colors or sudden, bright flashes of light, and especially in use. A flash grenade is very effective on her. She deals with both by hiding underground.

Reflective surfaces – rather obviously, if she were to catch sight of the Ryokugan in any clear reflective surface, she’d be turned to stone like her victims. She avoids activating her eyes until absolutely necessary to reduce the risk of killing herself. Reflective surfaces can also be used to reflect light in her face, which, if she isn’t prepared for it, can be just as useful a counter.

Chakra Nature: Water and Earth — can use all other elements besides Lightning, in which case she’s hopeless

Ninjutsu Range: mid

Weapons: Sai – Introduced to her by Ririchu (Uchiha OC) as sais were what the Uchiha Police Force used, and it suited her combat style if she ever needed to get up close and personal. Normally keeps three pairs in use, with double of each making a total of six: a pair with a sharpened tip, a dull pair, a pair with inverted prongs. She has several other sharpened solo sais of varying weights and balance, that she uses mostly to throw, though they can be used for close combat in a pinch.

– the one(s) she throws is in a holder strapped to the shoulder of her throwing arm, and what she uses her gloves to summon.

– normally picks a pair to use for a particular mission and favors the sharpened tip, but in high-stakes missions uses the gloves to be able to use her entire arsenal

– uses sai less for killing and more for disarming and disabling, playing up the advantage by her kekkei genkai.

– all the six pairs have similar weight and balance, and therefore can be cross-matched in battle.

Medical Appliances – She had a stint as a first-aid medic, and she is still the official assistant of Orochimaru’s scientific experiments, therefore she knows the human body well and can do emergency first-aid and the after-treatment to some effect, aided partially by the recuperative powers of natural energy she can control. She keeps by the single moral of save those she sees to the best of her ability. She carries all the basic medical necessitates and then some specials: for Deidara — extra clay and a whole pack of bandages; for Suigetsu — a sealed scroll full of water; for Kakuzu — thread. She also carries some simple surgery tools because the company she keeps requires a lot of emergency mini-surgery.

Ink and Brush and Scrolls – she’s learnt sealing from young, from a variety of teachers including Minato and Orochimaru, but Kushina is her main teacher, and can prepare sealing traps in-field if time is allotted.

Style (mostly Lightning Bruiser+Confusion Fu) – if forced into direct combat, she is a mostly short-ranged fighter, with accuracy decreasing as she extends into middle-range, and almost useless in a long-range fight, unless she has full chakra (which is almost never the case). This holds true during her Sage mode.

– She specializes in hand-to-hand combat, and once locked on to a target, can dish out sustained damage and chases it down reliably if it tries to flee, relying heavily on the Ryokugan and aim with the sai. She rarely uses shuriken, she’s more used to the heavier, steadier sai, or the kunai (she still prefers her sai, which has less danger to herself, explained in ’kekkei genkai’). Thus, her aim with the shuriken is not very good, due to the vast weight difference.

– She specializes in high-speed, mixed tactics combat, backed up by her mastery of the Body-Swap technique. Most shinobi cast a short illusion while they swap out to trick the enemy into thinking they hit the right person, but Haiko doesn’t, because she can’t use genjutsu. She simply swaps places with the target, confusing both the target and his allies, which makes her a fearsome opponent in group fights. Combine that with her tendency to sink into the ground and attack from there, she is a powerful solo attacker even without her Ryokugan.

– The Ryokugan allows her to be a powerful solo attacker. Combined with the confusing Body-Swap, she is able to hold her own in fights. However, her kekkei genkai causes her to tire very quickly, and that gives her a huge weakness.

– Also, she is a tactician. When she does use kunai, she almost always have liberal amounts of razor-thin wire attached to the end, to confuse and trap the opponent.

Dominant Hand: Right

— Summonings —

Summon: Fox summons from Ama-no-Iwato – (refer to _Summon) Signed on her graduation day from the scroll her mother left her, locked by a blood seal and opened by her blood with the help of Jiraiya.

– They help with ambush, assassination, information gathering, and frontal assault. Their unique trait is their tracking: they’re not very good at it, but they track by tracing the subject’s chakra residue in the air. They are normally summoned in pairs.

– Smaller-sized foxes are used as messengers.

– All foxes have a connection to nature chakra. Uniquely among the summon animals, they are the most accomplished in the Sage arts and have a Sage for all five elements, and Sage-in-trainings for each. They trained Haiko in Sage Mode after listening to Minato tell the story. The training took years, and Haiko only achieved it when she was 21. She started when she was 15.

– Due to her intense and different Sage training, Haiko can transform (henge) into a large brown fox, the uses of which still remains to be seen.

— Abilities —

Kekkei Genkai: dōjutsu, Ryokugan – Only compatible with the females of their clan, according to the fox summons. Because it’s passed down matriarchally, the clan name and the name of the kekkei genkai were both lost. Haiko fashioned it a simple name: Ryokugan, literally ‘green eyes’.

– It is a passive power, meaning that it’s always ‘on’. It however, can be suppressed with a chakra containment seal, which is fashioned first by Mito Uzumaki. The details of the seal is passed from her to Senko, the receiver, who then taught Orochimaru and Jiraiya, the latter who taught it to Minato [as an exercise] and Kushina [for her to help her student, Haiko]. Because of the volatile nature of the chakra [natural chakra] that the seal suppresses, it needs to be tweaked every now and then. It centers around the user’s eyes.

– the Ryokugan has two innate abilities, one offensive, the other all-encompassing. Its inherent eye ability is that it can see energy: natural energy, in green, and chakra, in blue, at the cost of natural colors for everything else.

– One: the ability to turn a victim to stone upon eye contact, which strengthens as the user’s power and skill increases. As child, unless the user’s chakra is immense and is inherently powerful, as was the case for Haiko’s mother, eye contact cannot turn a human victim to stone, though small animals seemed to be an exception. At that stage, the most eye contact can do is to freeze the victim in place, unable to move and feeling a disgusting sensation of hardening from the core of their chakra as long as eye contact is maintained. On the opposite end of the power spectrum, at near maximum mastery (or in Haiko’s case Sage Mode), the victim is ground to dust. The principle behind this is the unconscious manipulation of nature energy that the eye provides, explained below.

– Two: it has the inherent ability to manipulate the green-colored nature energy as long as the energy is seen, i.e. the ability while activated. She can shape it, move it or use it as a physical force (at the cost of a huge chunk of chakra), but it is only achievable when the user condenses the natural energy into something physical, like a shield. However, it is brittle, and can only withstand one or two physical contact before it disperses.

– Because the green is also a physical substance, it is not transparent. With her eyes activated the green substance floating in the air will block her vision. She can also see a person’s blue chakra system, however, if it’s far away it’ll be blocked by the green color. If she moves the green away, she’ll get clearer vision, and due her color sensitivity, she can spot a blue chakra system from far away against the monochrome background of her vision. She can also, through wrapping the opponent’s chakra system with remotely controlled natural energy, stop his or her movements temporarily.

– The user can also inject it into living chakra. This is the core principle behind the first technique: eye contact forces nature chakra into the opponent’s chakra system until impossible, or until the user’s chakra runs out. As a result, the opponent suffers an internal unbalance of energies, and turns to stone. With the optimum control when mastery is high, the natural energy doesn’t just upset the internal energy balance, it overwhelms the physical aspect of energy and rips it out of the body into the atmosphere, and the body disintegrates, becoming a pile of dust.

– With enough mastery and chakra, one will be able to fashion elements from raw natural energy, such as Senko was able to set fire to the bamboo forest despite being a ground type. Haiko is unable to achieve that level of mastery.

Weakness: – the Sharingan. It is a powerful opposing bloodline. They cannot affect Sharingan users as the special chakra of the Sharingan blocks their access of the Sharingan user’s chakra. They are unable to see the chakra system of a Sharingan user clearly, and cannot affect them with the natural energy (their chakra feels hard and unyielding, unlike a normal person’s squishy chakra). Eye contact simply bounces off, having no effect on Sharingan users.

Genjutsu – It’s their weakness and strength in one, and also a very effective counter. Because of the eye’s ability to see chakra and natural energy, they are able to see their own chakra if they turn their eyes to themselves. When a genjutsu is cast, they will notice the unnatural circulation of their chakra immediately and their chakra system will force itself to return to normal circulation, dispelling the illusion. As such, any level of genjutsu, even Itachi’s Tsukiyomi, can’t affect them. Shisui suspects Kotoamatsukami won’t work on her as well. However, because the chakra system is forcing itself to normalize circulation, it not only takes a moment that could mean life or death in combat situation, it also makes them nauseous for that time. Their vision will blur and their sense of balance upset, and they recover quickly, but seconds are a lifetime long when one is a shinobi. The Ryokugan user can’t use genjutsu themselves due to the same reason. As the level of mastery rises, so does and Haiko avoided this as much as possible by not ever going into a fight alone, just in case the opponent knows high enough genjutsu techniques to upset her system. When she does solo assassination missions that includes taking out bodyguards, she either slays the bodyguards fast enough that they don’t have time to react, or she stays to the side, first immobilizing guards via natural energy manipulation then kills them.

Chakra usage – because all the abilities of the eyes deal with raw energy manipulation, it takes up a lot of chakra. Like the Nara abilities, prolonged maintenance of shape manipulation of nature energy is heavily taxing on the user. The amount of chakra exhausted during the eye contact technique is half the amount of chakra of the victim, and as such Haiko, whose reverses are a little above average, does not attempt to kill powerful people that way, because she will either die from the attempt or be unable to do so and waste a lot of chakra trying.

Traits [there isn’t going to be good or bad, because I believe all traits can be both good and bad, dependent on the person]: stoic, observant, judgmental, independent, charismatic, proud, responsible, adventurous

Likes: Reading; calligraphy; shade (like from the sun); drawing.

Dislikes: Noise; people who insist they are right without proof; heat; brightness

Food(s): Her favorite food is dark chocolate, which is very rare. She dislikes anything bitter or spicy, and while she likes sweetened things, is very picky with them.

Drink(s): Her favorite drink is tea (all types) while she greatly dislikes sugared or sparkling water. Grew to like alcohol, but does not like getting drunk. Dislikes sake — thinks it’s too weak, goes for shōchū. When she can get her hands on whiskey, goes for that.

[she misses coffee horribly, and the only good coffee she gets is super expensive and her pay allow for that kind of opulence]

Color(s): Her favorite color is gray. Other shades she prefers is pastel or dark, while she hates bright colors (yellow in all its forms, for example). Her palette is black, grey and white, with a smattering of tasteful blood-red, and after she is made an official of Sound it becomes grey, beige and lavender.

Season(s): She doesn’t have a favorite season.

Spring and autumn are too bright, summer and winter are too hot or cold, and the latter two rarely happens in Fire. Temperature-wise she likes autumn best, but color wise prefers a rainy winter day where everything is nicer to her and grayer (in summer everything is brighter because of the sunlight; spring is gentler to her eyes but still has some cringe-inducing colors thanks to the flowers; autumn is too red, despite the good memories it brings.)

Weather: Her favorite weather is overcast or when it’s raining — because of the color balance. She also hates the seasons on principle, because in the Elemental Nations, the characteristics of each season can’t be experienced all in one place, unlike her old home. (she dislikes the reminder.)

Flower: She likes flowers, but can sometimes be physically pained by their colors, even if she enjoys the scent. Her favorites are the foxgloves, name notwithstanding.

Animal: Her favorite animal is a fox, though she likes cats and snakes, in that order. She dislikes any animal that’s noisy, including domestic dogs, which is ironic, because foxes are some of the nosiest animals.

Shisui married Ririchi, took his own life, entrusted his eyes to Ririchi and sent her to Haiko, who after Danzō publicly denounced her and kicked her out of the village, left Leaf to settle in Rain with the Yahiko-led Akatsuki

Pet(s): Used to own a stray cat called Miko while she and Kakashi still lived together, but due to negligence became a stray again after two years

Hyūga Kiryū — Branch family member. Due to being placed on Haiko’s team and the longest survivor of her old team, is well-versed in killed during Obito’s invasion

Makiko Yuhi — first team mentor. Was killed in the Kiri-based clan-targeted operation during the Third Shinobi War, in a separate mission from her team.

Shiranui Genma — had a crush on her for about a month after their team was formed, then realized she doesn’t care for such things and became friends and training buddies.

Maito Gai — not much to say about him except that he didn’t change from his canon-self much. Side note: Haiko got used to his antics pretty fast.

Uzumaki Kushina — took over Minato’s role of sealing mentor and took over Jiraiya’s role of seal-watcher, since Haiko’s Ryokugan needed constant changing during her development years.

Legal Guardians: Hatake Sakumo — was the first person to train her in the shinobi arts, enrolled her in the Academy with Kakashi, and allowed her to stay on in the Academy, until the pressure of the war forced her out.

Orochimaru — not the ‘legal’ guardian, as by the time Sakumo died, both Hatake children had graduated the Academy and were legal adults. Orochimaru’s role was simply as a fallback to appease the Council to the case of two clan children acting on their own at a young age. Thus officially, Haiko is Orochimaru’s apprentice, and thus the man has some measure of responsibility over her. The apprenticeship was terminated after Haiko was sorted into Team Kushina, and anyway Orochimaru was called back into the field for the war effort.

— Background and History —

Clan: Unnamed, presumed lost – Supposedly, once, a whole clan of them populated an area off the boundaries of Sand and caused the circulation of a terrible rumor. They were a powerful clan that fell out of power sometime in the early Warring Clans Period.

– Supposedly, the Uzumaki and Uchiha working together, early during the Warring Clans, crushed them. Uzumaki, because of their large and special chakra, gave the unnamed clan some problems with their non-eye contact techniques (explained in kekkei genkai), and Uchiha, because of their Sharingan, gave the unnamed clan a lot of difficulty with dōjutsu itself. Also, because the clan’s fighters were all female, as the males did not possess the kekkei genkai, the male warriors of the Uzumaki and Uchiha could overpower most of the main fighters through sheer strength and build and stamina, and as the kekkei genkai is dangerous to themselves as well as their enemy, many were tricked into locking eyes with their own clansmen or a reflection. There was only a passing mention of the temporary alliance between the two clans in the history archive of the Uchiha, and there were no elaborations on anything else until a short passage in the Uzumaki archive was found. It was way before Hashirama and Madara’s time.

Mother’s Background — Senko was an orphan who lost her parents sometime before the Second Shinobi War. She was found by Leaf shinobi on a recon mission and brought into the village. When she first arrived she accidentally killed several of the rescuers, and Uzumaki Mito, who recognized the girl’s power in time, placed on her a powerful chakra suppression seal that the clan head had devised in the time of war. The seal reigned in Senko’s kekkei genkai, and the knowledge of the seal was passed onto the students of Hiruzen Sarutobi, who were friends with Senko. Amongst the three, Senko was closest to Tsunade. When Mito died, Jiraiya and Orochimaru took up the duty of supervising her seal and changing it. Due to her participation and contribution to Leaf during the Second Shinobi War, Senko’s ability was eventually leaked to opposing countries and they sent hunters to kill her and obtain her eyes. She was sheltered in the village for a while, and then Nawaki was killed in an accident that Tsunade blamed her for. Senko was also close to Nawaki, and the boy looked up to the attractive kunoichi and wanted to be as powerful as Senko alongside his ambition to become Hokage. She would occasionally tell him tall tales that she makes up on the spot, and they contained heroes and villains and powerful sacrifices that had happy endings. Tsunade believed that Nawaki thought himself to be one such hero, and thus threw himself into the mission believing he’ll be alright because heroes, in her stories, were always safe and fine in the end, but he was killed. Jiraiya was still very much in love with Tsunade, and backed her, though he didn’t verbally or actively antagonize Senko. Orochimaru retreated behind the emotional bulwark of warfare and his experiments, and did not back her up. Senko, hurt, shocked and desperate, suspecting she was pregnant though she didn’t know who (she had slept around, it was war and shinobi took what they got) it belonged to, fled the front-lines and seemingly the village. When her child was born, she notified the village. The war had ended, Dan had died, Tsunade was a shell of her former self. The Council, led by Danzō because Hiruzen was injured, withdrew their amnesty and protection of her and her child with the reason of her abandoning post and refusing to take on clan status. Senko retreated from her village-sanctioned safe-house to build a cottage in the bamboo forest with her power. The Sannin protested heavily, but the Council did not relent. When the child became three, Senko was found and killed, but not before she hid her child in the safe-house. When the Densetsu no Sannin heard about it, Jiraiya rushed to the safehouse to try and find the child, wanting to save her and atone for his mistakes in the past, but Senko was already dead, and the child she left behind had the same eyes, with a thousand-year gaze.

[i got a whole story for her it’s super long and convoluted typing it all here would basically be writing my story so…nope

I have to say, I really enjoy this whole elaborate world you’ve established with Haiko. It’s clear you’ve put in a tremendous amount of research and consideration, especially in regards to her clothes and her kekkei genkai.

I do have a few things that I’d like to see developed a little further, since you’re on an excellent track;

How does she relate to Orochimaru and the Akatsuki? Why does Orochimaru pick her? Did she become a missing nin and flee the country? And for what purpose? How does her relation to Kakashi impact her after her departure? How does she Sound feel about her ties to the village?

Secondly, I’d like to see how Haiko’s kekkei genkai and her fox’s interrelate. Is there a reason why they use the fox, and is it more of a kitsune or an inari? Or is it simply a fox?

I am a little concerned with her being a sage, and being able to turn people to stone with just eye contact, and being a medical nin, and having a traumatic backstory™ etc. might be a little much for readers to digest and they may possibly distance themselves from her. Maybe take a look at how this is handled, or pace it out in a believable way; maybe she doesn’t become a sage until she’s much older? Or never fully harnesses the clan’s ability to turn people completely to stone? Perhaps she tries a few things before settling down into her niche.

Lastly, I’d like to see the childhood trauma thing explored. I feel like this could be a great point to develop her further as a character and elaborate on her personality. She’ll clearly have things that trigger her emotionally and bring back unpleasant memories, or perhaps it will be sort of ‘skippy’, where there are parts of her memory missing. It differs from person to person, and I feel like exploring this might bring an extra dimension to her character.

I do ADORE the concept of her original clan being matrilineal. I think it’s a really fresh take on how the Naruto Universe handles the roles of female characters, and it’s nice to see women being put into a more powerful position.

I’d be interested to see how your character grows as a person. How does she come to terms with the loss of Shisui? With her mother? How does she deal with the inevitability of growing older? How does she face her fears?

I look forward to hearing more about Haiko. She seems like a well thought out character with an engaging story. I can definitely see her existing within the Naruto Universe! It’s abundantly clear you’ve put a lot of heart and soul, as well as elbow grease into the creation of Haiko.
