[“Many years ago when the Channel Tunnel—connecting England and France—was being built (1986–1992), I got the chance to talk to a nurse working on the project on the English side. The project was big, deadlines were tight, and the workers, she told me, were suffering terrible conditions in the tunnel (a total of ten workers died during the construction (Smith 2015)). I wondered how complicated her job was as part of the onsite health personnel for such a large project. Not very. “The men mostly come to me complaining of terrible headaches,” she explained, “my job is to give them two aspirin and get them back down the tunnel as quickly as possible.”
Speaking of medicine under capitalism, Waitzkin (2000: 37) notes the fundamental contradiction between the perception of health as the ultimate “caring profession” and a society which establishes obstacles to the goal of alleviating “needless suffering and death,” for “[t]he social organization of medicine also fosters patterns of oppression that are antithetical to medicine’s more humane purposes. These patterns within medicine mirror and reproduce oppressive features of the wider society as well.”
Marxist scholars of medicine have theorised this replication of the wider class struggle within the health system in a number of ways. First, the priorities of the institution favour those of capitalism and the ruling class. For example, the modern system of health care emerged out of the need for a healthier and more reliable industrial workforce (Waitzkin 2000: 48); concern for the health of the working classes has tended to peak when there are imperialist wars to be fought, while the majority of current medical research prioritises lifestyle and “me too” cosmetic treatments for the global market rather than research on life-saving treatments for cancer and infectious diseases (see, e.g., Rapaport 2015). Second, the exploitative work relations within capitalist societies are replicated within the rigid hierarchy of medicine, with high-waged, upper middle-class consultants holding a great amount of decision-making power at the top, the lower middle-class nursing managers administering consultants’ needs in the middle, and—holding no power whatsoever and subject to the whims of health managers—the low-earning working-class orderlies and auxiliary staff at the bottom of the pyramid. Navarro (1976: 446) also notes the tendency of the medical profession to maintain and reinforce these class relations through “both the distribution of skills and knowledge and the control of technology” within the health service. Third, the health system functions as an institution of social control. That is, it reinforces the dominant values and norms of capitalism through its surveillance and labelling practices. In the words of Freidson (1988: 252), medicine acts as a “moral entrepreneur” to the extent that illness is viewed negatively and as something to be “eradicated or contained.” Even cancer, he states, is a social valuation by the profession, a moral rather than an objective judgement of the body, even if it is one “on which most people happen to agree” (Freidson 1988: 252).
Taking a Marxist approach to medicine includes recognising the policing function of the health professions to label and “medicalise” social deviance as illness, as well as reinforce the ideological prerogatives of capitalism as natural and common sense (for instance, through biomedical interventions focused on the individual rather than the wider social environment).
The social control function within psy-professional work practices and knowledge claims is reasonably easy to identify and has been a major focus of critical scholars—Marxist and otherwise—since the 1960s (see, e.g., Conrad 1975; Goffman 1961; Rosenhan 1973; Scheff 1966). The moral judgements that mental health experts make of people’s behaviour under the claims of scientific neutrality and objectivity allow them to sanction forms of deviance which run contrary to the prevailing social order. For example, Szasz (cited in Freidson 1988: 249) stated in 1964 that “agoraphobia is illness because one should not be afraid of open spaces. Homosexuality is an illness because heterosexuality is the social norm. Divorce is illness because it signals failure of marriage.”
Specifically, Marxist contentions of the psy-professions as agents of social control focus on the ways in which these experts contribute to the alienation of people from their own creative abilities. These experts utilise their knowledge claims on human behaviour to depoliticise attempts at social transformation at the group and community level, in turn acknowledging only individual solutions as possible. Consequently, states Parker (2007: 2), this “psychologisation of social life” performed by mental health workers “encourages people to think that the only possible change they could ever make would be in the way they dress and present themselves to others.”]
bruce m.z. cohen, from psychiatric hegemony: a marxist theory of mental illness, 2016

btw america has some kind of fucked cw supernatural esque view of the "working class" and who counts like it loves the idea of "small family businesses" and petit bourgeoisie small business owners at the same time it shits on all kinds of service sector jobs like mcdonalds fry guys and the pink-collar and often more highly educated jobs like teachers, nurses, and civil servants. (it does not like to do things to support small and medium sized businsses against mass corporations though - that would be bailouts and gov money!)
it also has a fundamentally whacko idea of "blue collar" professions like farmers, plumbers, and electrical engineers while remaining totally unaware of the fact that with modernity and rising technological advancement a lot of those jobs require more training and sketchy urban liberal college degrees and little computer things. and it totally ignores the undocumented mass labour force in the country.
like that's the thing about all these political back and forths about "the working class" and what it is and what jobs they contain- they're for an idea of america that never existed and certainly doesn't exist now

The core traits of psychopaths — superficial charm, grandiosity and self-importance, a need for constant stimulation, a penchant for lying, deception, manipulation and the inability to feel remorse or guilt — are celebrated. The virtues of empathy, compassion and self-sacrifice, are belittled, neglected and crushed. The professions that sustain community, such as teaching, manual labor, the arts, journalism and nursing, are underpaid and overworked. The professions that exploit, such as those in high finance, Big Pharma, Big Oil and information technology, are lavished with prestige, money and power.

William the Nurse? Fallfest Theory Part 2
So, after my last Ask, I’ve been thinking about the Carnival Nurse. It’s interesting that she only appears in one game mode, the Patch Up for Helpy. Furthermore, it’s interesting that the animatronics in this game mode are Lefty, Scrapbaby, and Pig Patch (and Helpy, but he’s not directly important).
TLDR: What if William Afton was a medical professional from the UK, who came to the US seeking a new entertainment profession, and the Pig Patch mini game in Help Wanted 2 is a symbolic retelling of his medical experiments of children at the Fallfest Carnival?
**For a theory refresher**:
- Fallfest was being run by Mrs. Afton’s family (before she was an Afton, so I refer to her as Clara for convenience) for generations, possibly since the 1930’s with the Fredbear singing show, with her also doing ballet tight-rope performances.
- Henry Emily was working as an engineer for the carnival attractions, likely creating Carny and Mystic Hippo, alongside the musical melodies and Fazband.
- William Afton was a British man who immigrated to the US to pursue the entertainment industry (hence why all his children grew up with British accents). He would help Henry create the characters of the musical melodies, mascot outfits, pring Bonnie and Fredbear, and the Fazbear characters (who we see eventually play at Fallfest 1983 according to the HW2 crane game).
Back to Carnival Nurse. It’s interesting that she is... well, a *carnival nurse*, in the Pizzeria Simulator location. In a game mode that has carnival themed characters (Lefty is just reskinned Carnie, Pig Patch is a musical melody member of the Carnival, and Scrapbaby is a clown, and we know that William Afton built two businesses based on circuses).
[Side note: FuhNaff pointed out that the Silver Eyes novels had mentioned William and Henry having books on the Circus]
It’s also interesting that we don’t actually *know* what William Afton was doing in the UK before he moved to the US. I say he came to the US because he wanted to enter the entertainment industry… but what if that wasn’t what he was doing before?
Gibi postulates that William Afton only thought about the mysteries of the human body after studying yoga gurus that were mentioned in FNAF 1 in hidden sounds, which is where he learned about the idea of combining metal and flesh for remnant.
I don’t disagree… but I think William has ALWAYS been interested in the human body. What if he was a medical professional in the Uk and used his talents here?
Because, beyond working as a Mascot performer and businessman with Henry and Clara, William could possibly have been a nurse or doctor AT the Fallfest Carnival.
It makes a certain amount of sense for how he became a genius with experimenting on children, not just in stuffing them into suits, but in creating technology that targets their minds (nightmare experiments) and in trying to recreate human physiology (Sister Location faces we see in the main room).
We always assumed his experiments started with his own kids, but what if he actually took an interest in the kids whom Helpy represents? The injured ones who were sent to his medical tent.
The carnival nurse voice lines are very interesting, because they are all easy ways for William to pick up unsuspecting children to experiment on.
What is even more damning is that these injured children actually stop being “injured” at some point: general neglect, parental neglect, and “unclassified trauma”.
What does **THAT** mean? Unclassified trauma???
What I think it means is that William slowly went from treating injured children to grabbing and sedating any child who was vulnerable with the 1970’s equivalent of the gas mask we see in Help Wanted 2, possibly just outright grabbing a kid who was alone in the case of “unclassified trauma”. Possibly as his Spring Bonnie mascot character…
As I’m typing this, a dark realization occurs.
Helpy, screaming as he makes too much noise, attracts “unwanted attention”.
What if, symbolically, this is meant to express how much work William was doing to avoid having his various carnival colleagues from noticing that his medical treatments were… morally unorthodox (aka cruel and unusual).
I don’t expect this to be 100% accurate, but it could possibly answer a lot of potential Fallfest questions.
It would rely on a lot of information we don't have yet but it's an interesting idea

hello chief!! spacecrew fan reporting for duty!! 🫡 what's everybody's reason to leave their former situation and become bounty hunters (and/or joining this particular ship)?
iirc tally left his planet cuz he was "inferior" and dispensable so he just headed out and kip followed him to protecc him but idrk for the rest of them....
ehehe ive actually been thinking about this a lot lately!!! some of the details are subject to change but ill share what ive had in mind thus far
youre basically right about tally and kip, still not settled how they get into the bounty hunting profession specifically but tally left because he was miserable and kip followed bc he loves him (also because he is desperate for adventure ehehe)
roy works a shitty on-site engineer/technician job at a machine rental service which she is entirely overqualified for. she follows technology-related news and tinkers with little contraptions at her family home.
one day she hears about a certain missing android, which catches her attention. there is little precedent for a report like this, and the details released to the public dont make sense. she decided her next project will be finding this little runaway. not to turn it in, just out of sheer curiosity.
um cw for suicide in this next bit i spose
bax is a human, fucking miserable. its not like his life is particularly bad. his family are upper middle class and love him. he does fine in school. he just hit the genetic lottery with mental illness in addition to being a huge egg ahah. when hes around 16 he tries to kill himself.
cw over for the rest of this bit
to his utter chagrin, he wakes up. he wakes up in a strange place, his hair is longer, all his memories are foggy. it must be a hospital, but its no hospital hes ever seen before. for one, there are no other humans. no other earth creatures he recognizes, for that matter.
the nurses and attendants have skin of cold steel. synthetic voices, synthetic faces, synthetic hair.
one of them, he builds a rapport with. this one is strange. instead of being exasperated with baxters constant badgering, quippingz and questioning of the attendants, he is intrigued. he even asks baxter questions in return.
the android begins sneaking baxter little treats. snacks, better food, little toys. in exchange, bax talks his nonexistent ears off during every second of its free time. he nicknames it clam chowder.
this of course, does not go unpunished. this robot has a job to do. codes to abide. their time together is subsequently limited, clam is assigned to a ward on the opposite side of the building. this sucks. clam desperately wants to leave the hospital grounds, see the world, bax doesnt know what he wants other than that he fucking hates being at the hospital and he likes clam, so hell help him at any cost.
they come up with a plan for escape. and they gtfo.
from here, everything gets hazy. my plan is to start with the first mission all 5 of them go on and work backwards, fleshing out the events that actually bring the rest of em together :3
maybe kip is a mailperson who meet roys parents by chance and end up agreeing to track her down for them accidentally, before roping his con artist nephew in, idk!

Do you think there are certain things that confuse Carlisle because he’s an old man not from this time period? Technology? Language? Social cues and womens rights? Sexuality? Not like gay stuff, I’m sure he gets that. More like people are more open about being sexual and talk about sex and wear sexy revealing clothing a lot.
Maybe? But just like anyone facing something new takes a time to accept, familiarize and understand it, nothing more. Surviving hundreds of years as a vampire makes him in turn less likely to let him hold on to things tightly.
Carlisle is a vampire, not a time traveller to the future. If he wants to stay integrated into human society, his ideas and values have to evolve with it, because the generations that defend the "old ways" always be died eventually (except for a very few individual vampires, but they can't stop the change of the whole society). If we look at things from vampires' long-period perspective, for example, in the early modern era most women were unable to read professional medical works let alone practice the profession, then in the 18th century there were very few women graduating from medical school, but they were excluded from the hospital; during WWI and WWII women medical workers were mostly nurses; by 1970 25% of medical school applicants were women and by 2003 it was 50% but female doctors nowadays are still trying to break the glass ceiling of gender bias and stereotypes. You know what I mean? like the "old" and "new" definitions of today's generation of humans don't mean anything for those vampires who have lived for centuries. They have no way to hold on to some of the ideas of the time they were born because those ideas don't exist anymore. What about the "old stuff" that still exists today? Surely he could have judged at revealing clothing of young people like some stubborn and conservative 90-year-old, thinking a female surgeon can't perform better than a man. But why would he? he knows things will change eventually, his experience of witnessing the world develop over the past few centuries is more likely to give him an open mind.

I've read in one of the replies to precious asks that you're a doctor. How would you describe the experience of being a doctor, what type of doctor are you, and what aspects of the profession do you find particularly engaging or compelling?!
Hey, Nonnie :) Well, you've hit on a topic that I could talk about for hours on end, because I'm so passionate about my work. So if you're ready for a bit of a rant, I'm more than happy to oblige!
Being a doctor can be a rewarding and challenging experience. We play a crucial role in the healthcare system, working to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries, and improve the overall health and well-being of our patients.
Those who know me personally are aware that I'm a certified neurosurgeon, but I haven't limited myself to just one specialization - I'm currently working towards completing my second specialization, which is clinical neuropsychiatry ❤️ 👩‍⚕️
PROS:
Ability to help people: One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a doctor is the ability to make a difference in people's lives by helping them overcome illnesses and injuries
People and their stories: Another great aspect of being a doctor is the opportunity to work closely with people and to learn about their unique stories and experiences. As a doctor, you become intimately involved in the lives of your patients, and you have the privilege of helping them through some of the most challenging and difficult times of their lives. You get to witness firsthand the resilience and strength of the human spirit, and you have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others. There is truly no greater feeling than helping a patient overcome a serious illness or injury, and seeing the joy and relief on their face as they recover ❤️
Dealing with critical situations: Another imprtant aspect of being a doctor is the training you receive to handle extreme situations. I have seen and dealt with a lot of drastic things in my career and life overall, and I can confidently say that nothing really scares me anymore. It's a unique skill set that you develop as a doctor, being able to remain calm and focused in high-stress situations (it helped me oh so many times!)
Job security: The demand for doctors will always exist, which means there will always be job opportunities for qualified professionals
Opportunities for lifelong learning: As a doctor, you never stop learning. New treatments, technologies, and procedures are constantly being developed, and we must stay up-to-date on the latest advances in our field. This can be intellectually stimulating and rewarding!
Varied career paths: There are numerous specializations within medicine, which allows doctors to pursue a career path that aligns with their interests and strengths
Respect and prestige: Doctors are often held in high regard by society, which can provide a sense of respect and prestige
Collaborative work environment: Neurosurgeons work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as neurologists, radiologists, and nurses, to provide the best possible care to their patients. This collaborative environment can be both challenging and fulfilling
Deathbed phenomena: As a neurosurgeon, I am frequently confronted with the reality of death. Many of my patients come to me in critical condition, and while I always do my best to save their lives, sometimes the outcome is not what we hoped for. Working with dying patients has given me the opportunity to explore the intricacies of the human body and mind during the dying process. It might sound morbid to some, but understanding the physiological and psychological changes that occur in a person's brain as they near death is a fascinating area of study. It's not just the physical processes that interest me, but also the psychological and spiritual aspects of death. I'm currently working with my team to gain a better understanding of what happens in the brain as a person approaches death, and how we can use this information to provide better care for our patients and their families
CONS
Long working hours: (OMG, how much I hate the night shifts!) We often work long and irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. This can make it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance and can lead to burnout, and it becomes even more challenging when you have young children at home
High stress: The job of a doctor can be incredibly stressful. We are responsible for the health and well-being of our patients and may have to make life-or-death decisions on a regular basis
Emotional toll: We are often exposed to the suffering of our patients and their families. This can be emotionally draining and can lead to compassion fatigue. As a doctor, it feels like a personal failure when I am unable to save someone's life. I often experience intense remorse and replay the entire situation in my head, on and on. I constantly question whether there was something more I could have done? Maybe I could have applied a different medication, or ordered another blood test? The what-ifs can be exhausting, but they drive me to constantly learn and improve so that I can provide the best possible care for those in need
High expectations: Doctors are held to a high standard of performance and are expected to be knowledgeable, skilled, and compassionate. This can be a lot of pressure to live up to 🤷‍♀️
High cost of education: Becoming a doctor requires a significant investment of time and money. Medical school and residency programs can be very expensive (I would like to express my gratitude to my beloved grandmother here, who sadly passed away last year. Her unwavering support (also the financial one), encouragement, and unwavering faith in me have played a significant role in getting me to where I am today. Despite doubts and skepticism from others, including my own parents, she never wavered in her belief in me. She often told me, "If you ever think about giving up on your dreams, just remember that I'll be watching you from the other side, so make sure to think twice before making any rash decisions - or I'll come back and haunt you until you change your mind." Thank you, Nanna ❤️❤️❤️)
So, that's the end of my long rant. For those who made it through to the end, I want to say thank you for reading!

Writing and surveying were essential to the existence of urban civilization, and Nisaba is thereby honored as the one who makes cities possible: “the place which you do not establish, there humankind is not established, cities are not built.” Other goddesses were also involved in such learned occupations. Amageshtinanna, who composed laments for her dead brother Dumuzi, was also called "mistress of scribes, and the goddess Nintu is also called the "great knower who knows everything." But it was primarily Nisaba who filled this role, honored by the scribes who ended their compositions with the short sentence, "Nisaba be praised!"
The scribes praising Nisaba were generally male. Why, then, did they imagine their profession to be under the tutelage of a female? And why did the singers and healers, many of whom were also men, pray to and praise their patron goddesses? The answer lies in the skilled nature of these activities and the contribution of women to their development. The cultural arts are learned occupations which require the accumulation of technological knowledge. They are wise activities and, as such, are attributed to wise women. Part of the reason that women were considered wise is psychological, for women were the chief caretakers of nursing children. This meant that the child developed in the presence of what seemed to her an all-knowing, all-powerful mother of early childhood, the "goddess of the nursery." There is another historical factor that should not be overlooked. Men were engaged in strenuous large-muscle occupations for which their superior upper-arm strength and generally heavier musculature was needed. In early Mesopotamia, they spent their time ploughing with oxen, digging ditches for irrigation, and building city walls for defense. Women, on the other hand, were tending children at home and producing basic goods by cooking, cloth making, and beer brewing. Such activities are technologically sophisticated and complicated and must have appeared particularly intricate in comparison to the activities in which most males were engaged. The skilled nature of women's activities must have reinforced from early childhood the psychological impression of the wise mother. These two factors contribute to an image of the female as accumulating, utilizing, and dispensing expert knowledge.
