WTNV quick rundown - 67 - [Best of?]
This is a very interesting episode. For starters, we meet the previous radio host before Cecil, Leonard Burton who is voiced by James Urbaniak.
The sun is actually cold. It’s cold and empty and all is lost. Greetings from Night Vale.
Leonard informs us that this episode will be about the 'highlights' of Cecil's career from intern to tenure whilst Cecil is on holiday. Somehow he has clips of these broadcasts, beginning with a teenage Cecil.
Cecil's first broadcast was a live report of the very founding of NV itself (in 1745, as we learnt before). Lee Marvin (who turned 30 that day) was apparently there. He wore a soft meat crown and was apparently the leader of the rest of the group. Cecil sees nothing wrong or weird about this (where are you reporting to and from, Cecil?) and does the community calender before giving the broadcast back over to the Leonard of that time.
Cecil in his early 20's does a report about things being devastated by the aftermath of a blood-space war. Also, Lee Marvin is turning 30 and celebrating it by opening his seventh eye and incinerating people with the holy light which comes from it. In the children's fun fact science corner Cecil says he went to Europe and met Guglielmo Marconi, the inventer of the radio. The inventer of the radio, who had just invented the radio, an invention which Cecil doesn't understand and apparently...isn't using to make the show right then...this would put them in 1895 or so. Anyway I think Cecil had intercourse with this man who, quote, showed him 'all sorts of things'.
In 1934, a slightly disgruntled still an intern Cecil reports on a new years party. They apparently have so much champagne they're using it to fill pools, with compacted caviar as pool floats. Josie Ortiz (old woman Josie, as a young girl) is there doing magic tricks and telling minor prophecies. Lee Marvin turned 30 this year.
Cecil's first broadcast as a full-time radio host came during the height of America's involvement in WWII. NV apparently produced a lot of explosives during this time. Cecil says that Leonard had retired and that this is a proud day for him. He assures us that this is probably a proud day for his mother who has been hiding from him for decades. Cecil says that since noone can leave NV they can't actually join the war physically, but can do things like chant in Bloodstone circles which is really what will win the war.
Leonard finds some Fidelipac cartridges which he doesn't remember preparing. They look very old. The report is from Cecil about the destruction of their sister city, Nulogorsk. It is 1983 and the world is ending. Josie is now middle-aged. Lee Marvin just turned 30. Cecil laments that he never found a special someone to give his life meaning.
There is a static, then Cecil speaks again. It is 1983. Josie is holding a benefit at the Old Opera House (tickets are $100). Simone Rigaudeau, professor of Earth Sciences is experiencing both this reality and the one we heard about before and feels her mind shattering.
The last recording has a piece of duct tape on it in which someone has shakily written NO. He is reporting Leonard's awful, brutal death. Something with a lot of blood, with pulling and a snap and fingernails. Something that might attract Street Cleaners so everyone needs to hide. Cecil is absolutely devastated and traumitised by this event. Clinton is president. Lee Marvin is turning 30 and is also senior political analyst. Leonard is, rightfully, highly disturbed by this story.
Weather: "When Can I Say That I Love You" by Kyle Fleming http://soundcloud.com/kyle-fleming-7
Leonard deeply wishes on multiple occasions during this episode that change wouldn't happen and things would just stay the same.
Stay tuned next for less of the best and more of the same. It's been a pleasure to fill in this week, in my old job, Night Vale. Cecil will be back soon. Until then, this has been Leonard Burton. And as always "See ya, Night Vale. See ya."

Before spring break, we had another book report, and I had to do it on another WTNV book. This time, The Faceless Old Woman novel
Y'all can have the art and poem, but not the obituary cause I never finished it :P
Kinda spoilery btw
"A woman with no face"
Washed away by the ocean
Wiped clean by the mist
Singed by the explosion
Missed by the fist
Furrowed and bloody
Stabbed a man with no crime
Left her fiance
Love takes too much time
Saw the grand sea
In search of the bull
No clue it was he
Who had made her life full
Orange trees ashen
They bear no more taste
She remembers his words,
“Where is her beautiful face?”
It’s not in the orchard nor the estate
It’s not in the deadly escape
Of pirates and monarchs, of whom she relates
But knew far far too late
Not in the sea, on the Wasp, or at home
For on the road, home isn’t known
Not with friends, in Gwo dziec, Paris, Toledo
Not Nulogorsk at Ground Zero
She sees his face all throughout time
And she thinks to herself,
“My face isn’t mine”
“But you’ll remember it still
All your descendants will
For each one I must kill
So my revenge is fulfilled”
#wtnv#welcome to night vale#wtnv fanart#wtnv novel#the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home#fr the best NV novel#shoutout to André!!!#im a poet btw... i dont think I've told y'all that

yall, I’m secretly a five year old, I don’t know how words or spelling work so all of my posts are just random letters that happen to make words and comprehensive sentences, I live in Svitz but I often visit Nulogorsk
Just saw someone ask for someone's irl age in their bio for "safety" or some shit and--
Friends, I'm telling you: this is the internet. There should be no expectation of access to your personal information.
Say nothing! Or if that doesn't work for you, fucking lie. Use a pseud! Say you live in a snail's shell off the coast of New Brunswick! Answer every info-gathering question asked of you with a different, less comprehensible answer! Tell anyone who says you've got to put your real age in your bio that you're 85, ta ever so, and they're very rude to bother you with this!
But your first step to internet safety is to say nothing.
Make it harder for bad actors to find you, manipulate you, or steal all your shit.
The good actors won't fucking ask.

* * *
* * * Продолжение следует.

From Nulogorsk with love
Reading the news and getting angrier and angrier, but you know there’s little I can do about terrible things that keep happening. I’m sure you can’t relate.
Welcome to Night Vale, ep. 155 - The Heist, part 3
Once again WTNV finds just the right words to summarize my whole existence in Russia right now.

Okay, wow. While trying to quickly answer this great poll, I found myself developing the following hypothesis:
Night Vale is for The Stranger what The Archivist is for The Eye.
Feel free to see me elaborate after the cut. (There will be spoilers for TMA season 4.)
So, as we know since the devastatingly depressing finale of TMA season 4, poor Jonathan Sims was an unfortunate lil project of That Gorgeous Asshole Elias Bouchard Jonah Magnus, servant of The Eye, to perform a Mass Ritual to have The Fears wreak their havoc upon poor earth all at once. For this, poor Jon, himself an avatar of The Eye, had to be marked by agents of all other Fears.
And Night Vale, in my brand-new favourite head canon, is the same kind of Mass Ritual, but this time devised by servants of The Stranger. Maybe Breekon & Hope? I mean, WTNV's the man who is not short and the man who is not tall seem to be perfect incarnations of these two delivery men, just minus the cockney.
And just like Magnus' ritual has a general atmosphere related to The Eye, Night Vale has very, very strong The Stranger vibes all around (so I can of course clearly see the point of this poll), but with other Fears sprinkled in to leave their marks.
Like, The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home. Seeing all you do, knowing all about you? Mocking you for the things you wouldn't want anyone to know? She quite clearly is an agent of The Eye.
Or Tamika Flynn and her teen militia? Perfect The Hunt vibes for me!
And The Smiling God? An all-devouring entity, described as a living light, of great warmth? Maybe that's The Desolation.
And, speaking, of The Smiling God, Desert Bluff's radio host Kevin is giving quite some The Slaughter vibes to me. As does Station Management, back when it was in office.
And Night Vale's Russian sister city Nulogorsk that's seemingly stuck in 1983, because the rest of its world is seemingly destroyed in a nuclear war? I'd like to think of The Extinction being involved.
Remember Radio Jupiter? I think she might be connected to The Lonely.
The Sand Wastes might be linked to The Vast, right? I mean, why not? (Disclaimer: The Vast is my absolute fav Fear, so I really had to try to find a Night Vale counterpart.)
The abandoned mine shaft where people get sent to when they voted wrongly might be connected to The Buried. Although I admit that I'm really just spitballing by now.
Finally, Id like to mention Dr. Janet Lubelle and her University of What It Is. Because in the Stranger-dominated world of WTNV, her pseudo-scientific "explanations" might be the best approximation to how The Spiral works. Also, she really creeped me out, so she deserves a final mention.
I admit that not all these ideas are bulletproof. But they don't all have to be correct for my hypotheses to work. And neither do all Fears have to have counterparts in Night Vale for it to work (I know that my little list is incomplete). The ritual does not have to be complete. On the contrary, it better is not yet complete. We don't need another Post-Change AU.
Woudl the town of Night Vale from Welcome to Night Vale be a manifestation of the Stranger?

(i have only heard the main podcast and im still reading the books so idk if this gets addressed elsewhere sorry) not counting the legal merging, do you think original Desert Bluffs was a Night Vale, or do you think EVERY Night Vale has a Desert Bluffs? And what about the other towns in the desert, like Red Mesa?
this is one of those things i've grappled with a lot while trying to understand wtnv's world building.
what we know is that huntokar ripped nv out of time to save it from nuclear war. this created a collapsing or black hole effect where all nvs in all timelines are either mixed, overlapped, or connected
what we also know is that nv is connected to some earth in some way that allows for 1. carlos (and the uowii) to come to town, 2. the man in the tan jacket, jackie fierro, and the craytons to move between nv and king city, 3. cecil to travel to europe, a tropical island, and the big city, 4. allow silas and mino to travel between it and the real world
night vale is simultaneously in its own pocket dimension sucking in all the other fractured night vales into a singularity AND a town with a location in the united states where people can travel (even before the events of 190)
that being said
in book 1 we learn that night vale is infectious. my assumption is that the surrounding towns were infected just like king city was and became Weird due to proximity to and inter-mingling with night vale.
(there's also much to be said about the history of nv and how it was weird even before huntokar hurt it, and how there ARE so many Weird towns all over the world. i personally love the idea that pre-1983 nv and other weird towns were all locked down by the world government to keep the rest of the world safe, but in order to keep the citizens from know they're trapped they're kept stupid about the outside world and are only permitted to interact with the other Weird towns. and then huntokars meddling just made things worse, but i digress.)
i don't think the other Weird towns are alt-timeline night vales because of how kevin and cecil function as doubles.
the a matter of blood arc gives us a clear understanding of how doubles are meant to work in terms of timeline shenanigans, and kevin and cecil don't fit that understanding. the danas were all clearly from different timelines and had to travel to the primary timeline. desert bluffs and night vale are within drive time, they're rival high school sports teams. kevin and cecil have different names! the events of the sandstorm do not perfectly parallel - vanessa and dana did not have the same experience.
whatever kevin and cecil are they aren't doubles like the danas and the kareems and the joseph finks. bulk has a lot of really good musing on them as mirrors instead of doubles, but i'll let them speak to that.
so no, i don't think db and pine cliff and red mesa and stone meadow and cactus park and the big city and king city and svitz and luftnarp and franchia and nulogorsk are alternate night vales. i think they're their own cities with their own rich lore and back stories and are interconnected with night vale by virtue of being Weird and therefore isolated and i don't think we've been told how yet
#im only half way thru the fow book which is a great place to get lore on the Weird european towns#wtnv#wtnv meta

WTNV Quick Rundown - 40 - The Deft Bowman
This episode was co-written with Zack Parsons. This episode also debuts Lauren Sharpe voicing Lauren Mallard and truly sees the pick up of the 'StrexCorp Arc'.
The riddle says he walks on four legs in the morning. He walks on two legs at midday. And at night he slithers from dream to dream, effortlessly, like the air we breathe. And we love him. Welcome to Night Vale.
A submarine has arrived, somehow, in NV. It is from a 'Russian fishing village' called Nulogorsk. Cecil reveals that NV and Nulogorsk were penpals for many years, until Nulogorsk became stuck in 1983 thus preventing NV from discussing the complexities of Michael Jackson's evolving career, so NV ended the exchange. The NV PTA are concerned that the arrival of the submarine may be an attempt to start up arguments about 'how to use a calendar' once more.
The SSP's genderless spokesbeing (who is described as having smoothly beautiful features, a voice which charms animals and milk-glass eyes) tells a story about how the past is the past and now is now to try and dispel these concerns.
When the submarine is investigated they find (shortly after a junior investigator goes in, screams and is prematurely aged by several years) an enormous bald-headed man with floral tattoos missing his left hand. There is a note in Russian which lists a number of items (himself included) but most concerningly the front page of a newspaper written by Leann Hart explaining that Nulogorsk was decimated by nuclear attack in 1983.
Cecil expresses concern, as they continued to talk to 'Nulogorsk' beyond that. He has Intern Zvi pull up that same newspaper headline from archives, which is different completely to the one found on the submarine. He wonders what this all could mean.
The man found on the submarine answers a rotatory phone that was with him, speaking into it in Russian. When the call is traced, it's discovered that Megan Wallaby is on the other end, calling from the recently fixed telephone near the TacoBell. Megan apparently talks about her loneliness to him. The man states in English that he is a gift from Nulogorsk and wishes to be a whole body donor for Megan.
The surgery is a quick and complete success, though with much therapy in her future, the consciousness of Megan is entirely within her new full body. Cecil enthuses that she is beautiful and will finally get to live the life of average little girl that she always wanted to, without being restrained by her 'congenital hand-bodiness'. This suggests, rather nicely, that having a enormous adult-male body is not going to stop Megan being seen as the young girl she actually is/identifies as.
Weather: "Offering" by Black City Lights. blackcitylights.bandcamp.com
There is a jade statue of a Cat Who Hums Almost Inaudibly in the Sheriff's Secret Garden.
The new NVTB's slogan is “We Will Show You Fun In a Handful of Dust,” as the director Madeline LaFleur insists that tourists don't need anything at all to have a good time and should visit NV just because.
Cecil is still receiving texts from Dana. The recent ones tell of her finding a mountain with a lighthouse upon it that has a blinking red light coming from it.
When Cecil tries to reply, his touch screen shows a photograph of his face that begins to slowly rot, the eyes deepening until they are sunken holes, long white hair growing rapidly, insects crawling from his slackened, decayed maw. And then the words "undelivered text" in all caps appear below it.
Lauren Mallard is the 'programme director' of the station under Strex's new management. Cecil describes her with genuine enthusiasm as being the kindest, most gentle manager he's ever had and 'a delight'. Lauren is very complimentary of Cecil and his show, but leaves very suddenly as soon as she's gotten Carlos' name out of Cecil after lamenting about the money they lost due to Carlos breaking the story about the danger behind their oranges.
Stay tuned next for live coverage of college basketball, as two universities select a dozen students to perform unnatural physical tasks on a wooden rectangle inside a cavernous scream-chamber. Good night, Night Vale. Good night.
Proverb: You can't get blood from a turnip. Listen, you need some blood? I can totally get you some blood. Set that turnip down and follow me to the blood. There’s a lot of blood.
