IT'S ALIVE! \o/
Here's the art I had the pleasure to develop for Nullus Anxietas, the 9th Australian Discworld Convention! \o/
Some of you may remember that Igor design I posted a while ago? Very well, it was part of this bigger project that I'm happy to show today. (I just made the art. Text was later added by the event staff)
It was a great pleasure to participate and to be present at it in some way. I wish those who attend a really NICE event!

Nullus Anxietas 9 - Australian Discworld Convention Announcement
https://karenjcarlisle.com/2024/03/30/nullus-anxietas-9-australian-discworld-convention-announcement/
I’m a long-time attendee of our Aussie Discworld Conventions. They’re held every two years and alternate between Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney. 2024 is Adelaide’s turn. I booked as soon as tickets became available.
I came to Discworld by a different route than my Dearheart. He’d always loved the books, and we have all of them on our shelves. I first came to them via a chance meeting with Sir Terry at the 1999 World Con (Science Fiction) in Melbourne. We attended the event as part of our honeymoon.
Since then, I’ve learnt more about Sir Terry’s work and his ‘quirky omniscient narrator’ style via writing courses, after which I read some of his books. (Death is my favourite character. Writing his dialogue in ALL CAPS is genius at directing my internal narrator.)
I met Sir Terry again in Sydney 2011, at the last Australian Discworld Con he attended. To my shock, I’d won the ‘raffle’ for those booking early attendence, and got to sit with him at the gala dinner. What a conversation! He was an insightful and intelligent man, and I’m honoured to have met him personally – not once, but twice. So I suppose you could say I became a fan of the author and his writing before his Discworld characters.
I’ve been invited to be a Guest Author! So I was a bit surprised (and totally excited) to be asked to be one of this year’s guest authors for Nullus Anxietas 9. (Squee!) We’re still working out the details, but I thought I’ll tell all my patrons first! I’m definitely a judge for the Masquerade. It looks like I’m also doing an author talk (or workshop)- mostly likely on world building, aimed for those who write stories or create roleplaying worlds. I’ll be on an author panel (I’m just a tad excited about who may also be on the panel – shh… spoilers) and possibly hosting a Klatch (I’m more comfortable in smaller groups). I also hope to have my books available to purchase. If you’re a Pratchett fan, you can book your ticket HERE.
Patron Celebration Treat
To celebrate, I’m also inviting top-tier patrons (Adventurer Extraordinaires and Time Travellers) who are in Adelaide over/around 12-14th July to join me for lunch or dinner; my treat.

I think Neil Gaiman once did a piece
Wait instead of hedging whether or not it was real, I just went and found the article
Anyway anything anywhere, it's about what burned inside him
I met Terry Pratchett at a Nullus Anxietas convention when I was about sixteen.
I think it was either just before or just after his diagnosis became public knowledge
He talked, in depth, about gold-plated bees
Any waythingwhere, here's the article
i know you arent this type of person but your humor has about the same rhythm and style as those people who insist dantes inferno and paradise lost are fanfiction
Youre right and I have a whole rant about this exact thing.
I saw down and re-watched Metalocalypse recently. I had this realization of "Oh my god, this is what every Adult Swim/newgrounds/YouTube flash cartoon has been trying to emulate for the past 15 years." It SOUNDS like it's just four bros fucking around in a recording booth, but Brendon Small clearly put a massive amount of time, energy, expertise, and practice, into the writing and performances of that show.
I think a similar thing happened with "English major internet humor" and the prose of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.
Comedy prose is all rhythm and voice. I think folks pick up on how Pratchett structures a joke --what with the asides and em-dashes to control the pacing-- but they lack the self-importance and show-offishness to actually pull off what is, at its core, scathing and spiteful metacommentary, often at his own expense.
There is a journalistic rage at the core of Pratchett's comedy. I think it deserves innovation rather than compounded imitation.

I wonder if you´ve seen that Run Rincewind run short movie made for the Australian Discworld convention - and if you did, what did you think about Rincewind? :D
I watched the Nullus Anxietas (No Worries!) video and I’m in love with that Rincewind! The video is funny and at least Rincewind’s age is the correct one (for me) and not like in the other adaptation where he was an actual grandpa.
I heard the Snowgum Film is working on another short movie about the story “Troll Bridge” and it looks amazing!
Here’s a picture with Rincewind and the Creator:
I mean, look at them!

I know what I want my next tattoo to be (granted, it'll be quite some time before I get one) I want Nullus Anxietas written on my arm so I can look at it when I need to be reminded: No Worries. And I'm a huge nerd so it'll crack me up when I need a chuckle.

I was lucky enough to hear this read by Pat and Jan Harkin at Nullus Anxietas 9 in Adelaide this year. Along with a presentation about how they found the stories that are collected in a Stroke of the Pen.
READ: The final of Terry Pratchett's lost stories - Arnold, the Bominable Snowman - was discovered after the hardback publication of A Stroke of the Pen, and included in the paperback edition.
It is also now available for all to read, for free, here.

Costume number 1 this year is Moist Von Lipwig! I did the hat for the last Discworld con I went to in 2012, but this year I decided to go the full ensemble. First step is making his waistcoat. Discworld fans will know he wears this suit to pretty much be centre of attention, and the fabric is certainly eyegrabbing. It's a gold brocade that's been tricky to work with (frays to nothingness easily) but I'm really pleased with the result. I learned how to make welt pockets, and they turned out pretty well. I also think I pattern matched the front pretty well. It doesn't photograph real well in my unit, hopefully once I've finished the lot I can get some shots in natural light Rather than make the pants, I decided to buy them off alixpress. They are certainly eye catching, and I don't want to imagine how they'll feel after wearing them at a con for a while, but they provide a good contrast to the waistcoat. I'm going to make a frock coat to go with it, which I'll match fabric wise to the pants as close as possible...maybe not as weirdly stretchy a material though.

Unseen University was built out of stone -- so built out of stone that in fact there were many places where it was hard to tell where wild rock ended and domesticated stone began. It was hard to imagine what else you could build a university out of. If Rincewind had set out to list possible materials he wouldn’t have included corrugated iron sheets. In response to some sort of wizardly ancestral memory, though, the sheets around the gates had been quite expertly bent and hammered into the shape of a stone arch. Over it, burned into the thin metal, were the words: NULLUS ANXIETAS. “I shouldn’t be surprised, should I?” he said. “No worries.”

You know, I think the best part of Nullus Anxietas last year were the members of the Beggars Guild. The Assassins were pretty cool too, especially since you could hire them to assassinate people. OH MAN THAT'S RIGHT
THE BEGGARS GUILD, THOSE SNEAKS. One of them hired the assassin's guild to take out the entire alchemist's guild, AND THEN SPREAD A RUMOUR IT WAS A THIEVES GUILD MEMBER WHO DID IT.
MAN THE GUILD WARS WERE FUN. According to my passport I got assassinated three times!
I also spent half the weekend being Explosia, the goddess of explosions. I hung out with my buddies the god of being late and forgetting to do things and the goddess of awkwardness, as well as my sister, the high priestess of explosions (she didn't want to be a god).
Oh wait, the point of this was that the Beggars Guild were hilarious with their begging and their outfits and their King who went around asking for a 20 room mansion or a feast for a 100 people, because that's what the king of beggars begs for. He was also cosplaying Duck Man, which was great but he probably got tired of people asking about his duck and having to say "What duck?" all the time
SIGH it was a lot of fun. I wish I could go next year. I would also totally be in the beggars guild next time around.

As promised, archchancellor Bill Rincewind will send his cousin a jumper that will never fit (and a package of Roo-beer).
And it seems even Scrappy wants to wish his mate a merry Hogswatch.
