Hailing from Late Triassic North America, Caelestiventus hanseni turned what we knew about pterosaurs on its head. Before its description in 2015, it was thought that all of the early pterosaurs of the Late Triassic were small coastal animals, feeding on fish and insects by the shore. But Caelestiventus lived in a desert, 65 million years before other known desert-dwelling pterosaurs. Also, up until its discovery, only some pterodactyloid pterosaurs were known to he desert-dwellers, but Caelestiventus was a dimorphodontid. Dimorphodon itself being found in the Early Jurassic, this puts the origins of the dimorphodontid family much further back than originally thought, and in North America. Caelestiventus is also the oldest known pterosaur from North America.

While most Triassic pterosaurs are very small, Caelestiventus was (comparatively) large with a 17.8 cm (7.0 in) long skull and estimated 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) long wingspan. The only known specimen is a subadult, so it’s possible Caelestiventus could have grown larger. It had three different tooth shapes: long fang-like spikes, large "leaf-shaped" blades, and tiny blades, which it may have used to catch and eat lizards and small insects.

Found in the Nugget Sandstone Formation, Caelestiventus would have of course lived in a large desert full of sandy dunes, dotted by seed plants of the extinct, cycad-like order Bennettitales. No other named fossils are known from this area, though theropod tracks have been found, and indeterminate fragments of theropods, sphenosuchians, drepanosaurids, sphenodontians, and lepidosaurs are known.

This is the beautiful Lower Jurassic Nugget Sandstone Formation from the Glen Canyon Group. An excellent example of stratigraphy, the more recent Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation is visible in the distance!

Okay my time in Hawaii has given me some AMAZING ideas for an update/mod

The main point: Tropical Island biomes. Found in lukewarm and deep lukewarm oceans, these huge islands are home to a smattering of new items. First and foremost: The palm tree. This new kind of tree adds:

Coconuts, that can be eaten/drank after being harvested and cracked to instantly heal 1 heart and 1 hunger bar. Coconuts can also be turned into Tropical Drinks with pineapples (Explained later)

A new kind of yellow-gray wood called Palm Wood that can either be turned into planks, or used as a substitute for bamboo in scaffolding. The palm tree's leaves can also be turned into strands (which can be used as a substitute for wheat in hay bales only) or be used in various crafting recipes that I'll explain later.

But that isn't all! Also added into the tropical island biomes would be new things such as:

A new kind of stone called Lava Rock that comes in a smooth and rough variant. The rough variety is porous and allows water to pass through it, and the smooth variety can be smelted into iron nuggets!

A new kind of natural formation, a volcano. The volcano is made entirely of stone, sand and lava rock, and at its top is a large crater, either dormant (full of rough lava rock and stone), or active (full of lava and smooth lava rock).

New kinds of sand and Beach Glass! Black, pink and green sands all have a chance of appearing on the shores of tropical islands, and when dug up, they can be used either for smelting into their respective stained glass color, or for making new colored sandstones! Pink and green sandstone wouldn't have a chiseled variety, but the black sand would have all-new designs, all based on real-world petroglyphs (a turtle, a zombie, a person holding a sword, etc). As for the beach glass, upon digging up a block of sand with a shovel, it instead has a chance of dropping a randomly-colored chunk of beach glass! This material can either be turned into a stained glass block (fill all 9 squares in a crafting table with the same color of beach glass), or it can be used in other crafting recipes (which I'll, again, explain later.)

A new mob, the goat! The goat is a neutral mob that can be milked, tamed, and ridden like a very, VERY slow horse. The goat, being neutral, will charge at the player with its horns if attacked. The item used to tame it is either wheat or palm leaves, and it'll instantly be attacked by any untamed wolves. It also drops leather when killed. Not like anyone would do that, though!

PINEAPPLES!! This new fruit grows exclusively on coarse dirt (which gives it a purpose, finally), and it has 3 stages. Bush (the first stage), Small Pineapple (a little flower with a red baby pineapple growing out of it), and Full Pineapple (hitting the plant at this state reverts it to Bush and gives you 1 pineapple.)

A new hostile mob, the Eel! The eel lurks in the tropical waters offshore of the islands, and will attack you if you come within 10 blocks of it. Upon killing the eel, you get the eel hide, which can be used in crafting scaffolding (I really like making substitutes for existing recipes) and other recipes.

Driftwood! Are you tiring of having nothing on the tropical island but palm and oak wood? Lucky for you, off the shores of the island and on the beaches, random logs of assorted wood will have dropped off! Classed as (Wood) Driftwood, i.e Dark Oak Driftwood and Birch Driftwood, these blocks will only haul 3 planks when put into your crafting inventory, but hey! It's better than having nothing but palm and oak!

But again, that isn't all! Some new items that could be crafted consist of:

A snorkel! Crafted with 4 iron ingots in the cardinal directions, a glass block in the middle, and 4 eel hides in the diagonals, this item allows you to breathe underwater indefinitely... So long as you don't go more than 2 blocks down. It also allows the player to instantly see everything underwater without a night vision/water breathing potion. This item would take up the head slot and have a variety of enhancements behind it, such as using different colored glass to see the world more a e s t h e t i c a l l y, making the range of breathing longer by adding more iron ingots, etc.

A tropical beverage! Crafted with a glass bottle, a coconut, and a pineapple, this tasty beverage heals 2 hearts instantly, gives Regeneration II for 3 seconds, and heals 2 entire hunger… hams. However, drinking more than 3 before you eat/drink anything else gives you a nasty surprise: Hunger, Poison, and Nausea for 10 seconds. (You know, for balancing purposes!)

Hot Coco! Crafted with a coconut and cocoa beans, this simple beverage heals 3 whole hunger points and Speed for 5-60 seconds, depending on how many cocoa beans were added.

A longboat! This new boat can be crafted by making a boat, then surrounding it with palm planks. This particular boat is slightly slower than a normal boat, but it can hold up to 4 mobs/players in it. Perfect for mob transport and/or multiplayer worlds!

A sail! Crafted with 9 dry palm fronds (palm leaves after being smelted in a furnace), this item can be put in either a boat or a longboat to make it go by itself! It's perfect for when you want to chill out in your inventory or leave your keyboard but you need to travel over an ocean quickly!

A slingshot! Crafted with 4 wood planks in a Y, and with 1 string in the middle of the Y, this item is a step below the bow in terms of damage, however, it also charges quicker, shoots farther, and allows the player to shoot anything in their offhand! Got a stack of seeds? Use your slingshot to kill zombies with them! Got some smooth lava rock burning a hole in your pocket? Fire it off with the slingshot! Got a bow, shield or sword in your offhand?? Fuck it, put it in the slingshot! (Note: Any and all non-consumables such as armor, swords, etc will be dropped on the ground after firing.)
