You loved the frat brothers of Nu Chi Theta, you really did. They had welcomed you with open arms, they made sure to clean (kind of) when you went over, at least one bathroom was left spotless for your use in the frat house, most, if not all, of them were friends for a life time, and they treated you like you were one of their own. Which meant that frat outings, fundraisers, events, and bonding activities also included you.

Most of the time you loved being included, you loved the camaraderie, you didn't feel left out or out of place in any way, but sometimes, like today, you wished they could just leave you out. Realistically speaking, why did you, Fratboy!Jaehyun's girlfriend, have to be on the frat bonding hike that started at six in the morning? Did Taeyong, Johnny, Haechan, and Jaehyun all technically emotionally manipulate you into coming? Yes. Were you promised a large coffee and a huge breakfast for free after the hike? Also yes, but that didn't mean the act of hiking so early was going to suck any less.

Honestly speaking, everything was fine. Once you woke up with the cold air and got your muscles, moving you were doing fine, but it was summer. That meant that the cool air lasted for all of an hour before the sun started to heat everything up and make everyone sweat and stink. Plus, Jaehyun looking absolutely yummy in a backwards baseball cap motivated you enough to keep going. Luckily, before it got too hot, you had all reached the peak and were making your way back down.

You and Jaehyun were at the back of the group, Haechan and Mark just a few feet ahead while Johnny and Doyoung led the crew back down the trail. It was more leisurely heading back down, and you took this opportunity to admire the beautiful nature around you. The trees were huge and towered over all of you and led up to the right blue sky. Luscious shades of green surrounded you all, and the fresh air mixed with the earthy scent of dirt and pine filled your lungs. You had also slowed down since you and Haechan had a little prank up your sleeve...

Jahyun's hand was clasped tightly with yours as he led you over a rough patch of the trail. "God, it's so beautiful out here," you exhaled dreamily which led to Jaehyun mumbling out an agreement. You kept your hand tightly encased with his, keeping your voice light and happy, "no one would hear you scream." You even slow your gait so you fall behind from the group just the slightest bit.

Jaehyun's eyes widen as he stumbles over a hole and picks up his speed, "what the hell did you just say?"

You smile at him, squeezing his hand, "I said it looks like a dream."

You hear Mark and Haechan laughing, the latter wheezing and stopping in the middle of the path. You try to keep your own laughs in as you both come to a stop behind Haechan. Mark stops a few feet ahead of you guys, taking a sip from his water before grabbing Haechan's and handing it to him.

"He's taking up the path, want to take a short cut back?" you ask Jaehyun in an all too happy tone.

His eyes widen and he struggles to pull his hand out of your hold, "fuck no, I mean- no. No, we better stay with the group. I need to stretch my legs some more. Let's get going. Mark! You're with me now, you and Haechan in front of us. I need eyes on you at all times, sweetheart."

You shrug nonchalantly and begin walking ahead of Jaehyun and Mark. Haechan walks beside you for a few minutes, all of you enjoying the serenity that comes with being out in nature. You inconspicuously lean into Haechan, keeping your voice low, "did you get it?"

"Absolutely," he answers while showing you the video in his camera roll, ready to be sent to you to post.

For the rest of the day, Jaehyun keeps an uncharacteristic amount of space between the two of you. He doesn't even get annoyed or upset that you and Haechan are attached at the hip. At breakfast, he gulps as he watches you pour everyone their coffee at the diner and then waits until everyone has had a sip before he even thinks about drinking from his own. He makes Mark take a drink from his mug and when Mark doesn't react strangely, he breathes out a sigh of relief, finally drinking his own coffee.

By the end of the day he's been so weirdly on edge around you that he just feels his nervous energy changing his overall vibe. You enter his room, wrapping your hair in a towel as you toss your dirty clothes into his hamper, mumbling something about doing the laundry before you head back to your place.

"You wouldn't actually do anything to me right? Like anything scary?" Jaehyun asks you suddenly.

You freeze, turning to him with furrowed brows, "not unless you asked me to and we both agreed to it, why? Or maybe if it was like Halloween or a prank."

Jaehyun feels a weight off his shoulders, and replies with a deep exhale, "no reason, sweetie."

‣ haechan: nu chi theta's very own wild card! a public relations major, known for his big flirt energy, people love him for his confidence and unapologetically bold personality—he’s just him. literally the life of the party, usually the one who stands out because of how obnoxiously loud he is. music festivals are practically his second home; catch him either riding the rail or vibing back with his frat bros. with him, expect the unexpected; he's always full of surprises.

‣ mark: the frat's resident house dj of nu chi theta, a marketing major who wants to be john summit so bad according to haechan. he literally bought lasers off ebay just for their frat house. he's the guy everyone likes without trying. the frat's laid-back heartthrob, the one that can make everyone feel comfortable even if he's more reserved than his wilder friends. maybe one day he'll be headlining a festival... who knows!

‣ jaemin: the frat's smooth-talking communications major and surprisingly the king of rage cage! the highest body count in the group (insane). with a smile that could probably talk its way out of a speeding ticket, he's the guy everyone crushes on. the resident designated driver because he loves showing off his modded car. he literally wants a girlfriend but is absolutely terrified of commitment... but are we surprised? no.

‣ jeno: the ultimate double threat in the frat: a kinesiology major who's literally a frat bro and a gym bro... double whammy! with his build, who doesn't want a shoulder ride from him? he's the one in charge of bringing the goodies to events or to any party if you know what i mean. the resident rave dad, usually the one who holds the totem and has a fanny pack of just the essentials. vicks? gum? the fan? count on jeno.

‣ jisung: the computer science major who went through the key club to frat boy life pipeline. the smartest in the group obviously; i mean, how is he keeping up with classes with these events? he might be the complete opposite of his big (haechan), but they just mesh so well. if he's not partying, he's gaming in his room! not picking up the phone? just message him on discord.

introducing the gamma alpha class of nu chi theta! these fratboys formed their friend group during their freshman year, when they all rushed for the same fraternity. they bonded fairly quickly during pledge week, going through hell and back to get where they are now. shoutout to our sexy pledge dads jaehyun and johnny for crossing these idiots! from that point on, their lives became a wild ride of house parties, club events, and most importantly: brotherhood. jisung joined the fraternity later on and was picked up by none other than lee haechan, sealing their place as the ultimate big/little duo. now, their days are filled with unforgettable nights of partying, drinking, and endless hookup stories—living their best frat life, one rager at a time.

Therian PSA:

I’ve seen some people say that they are afraid to wear the Theta-Delta out in public or that some anti-therian people have recognized it or questioned it.

In America, if you are college age or older, you can explain your theta-delta as a collegiate Fraternity or Sorority symbol.

Fraternities and sororities are basically socially accepted cults in colleges that identify themselves with names of two to three Greek letters. Examples: Chi Omega (sorority), Delta Delta Delta (sorority), Sigma Alpha Epsilon (fraternity), Sigma Nu (fraternity).

Fraternities are for boys (or can be gender neutral or co-Ed in liberal universities depending on the fraternity) and sororities are for girls.

If someone questions your Theta-Delta and you are not comfortable telling them you are a therian, tell them that it’s the symbol of your sorority/fraternity called Theta Delta. They will say something like “oh I haven’t heard of that one?” And just tell them that it’s a small fraternity/sorority that was local to the area you went to school.

The people that would not be okay with therians are the same type of people that vibe with fraternities and sororities.

Wait... WE can read Greek?!

I was reading a wiki article about ancient artifacts when it shared some Greek words that were inscribed on the artifacts:

Of course, my first thought was that I obviously can't read that... but... I kept looking and realized that I could sort of read some of the greek, thanks to knowing certain greek words and letters, mostly from my scientific interests, but other places as well.

For instance, look at the second word: "ΤΑΥΡΟΣ" Spelled out: Tau-Alpha-Upsilon-Rho*-Omicron-Sigma = TAUROS. The bull, which you may recognize from astrology or from the mino-taur (minoan bull) of mythology.

(*There were a few letters that I was less familiar with: e.g. P = Rho. Basically it's an R without the bottom-right leg. Also remember that there are kind of three "O"s: Regular O = Omicron; Ω = Omega; Θ = Theta, which looks like an O but isn't)

Let's try the 4th word: "ΚΑΡΚΙΝΟΣ"

Kappa-Alpha-Rho-Kappa-Iota*-Nu-Omicron-Sigma = Karkinos = Crab.

(*The expression "not one iota" is bc the letter "i" began as one little tiny line or event a dot. e.g. In hebrew, the letter is known as "yud" and is the smallest and simplest letter. It looks like a comma.)

For those familiar with astrology, they may know this is also known as "cancer", and is the origin for the use of the medical condition as well. (You may have heard about certain foods being "carcinogenic" = carcin generating = cancer causing.)

(Why "crab" for "cancer"? - NPR: "...Hippocrates because he was around very early. And some time about 400 B.C., he was examining many cancer patients with what we'd call today end-stage cancer... And he applied the Greek word karkinos, which means crab. A lot of explanations, all of them equally wonderful and all of them equally difficult to prove, but why did he use that? And if you examine a tumor, if you actually feel malignant tumor, you'll note that it's hard as a rock. And so some have explained that it reminded him of the hard shell of a crab. But others have said it.. may have reminded him of the pain that a malignant tumor induces. It's much like the sharp pinch of a crab's claw. And an even better version is that it suggests the tenacity with which, you know, a crab bites you…")

Ok, next is the 5th word: ΛΕΩΝ: Lambda-Epsilon-Omega-Nu = Leon = Lion (I think this one is easy, but perhaps that's bc my name, Ari, means Lion.)

Next: "ΠΑΡΘΕΝΟΣ" Pi - Alpha - Rho - Theta - Epsilon - Nu - Omicron - Sigma = Parthenos = Virgin Again, astrology fans may recognize the word. Zoo fans may recognize the word from stories about lizards in zoos suddenly becoming pregnant on their own, known as "parthenogensis" - virgin birth. (Christians may recognize the word for similar reasons!) Or you may be familiar with the Parthenon, an ancient greek temple to Athena the "virgin/maiden goddess".

Two words later, #8: "ΣΚΟΡΠΙΟΣ" Sigma-Kappa-Omicron-Rho-Pi-Iota-Omicron-Sigma = Skorpios = Scorpion!

Next: "ΤΟΞΟΤΗΣ" - This one's a bit harder Tau-Omicron-Xi*-Omicron-Tau-Eta-Sigma (*That's a hard letter. There's also apparently a similar letter represented by "X")

= Toxotes. I wouldn't have recognized this as the word for "archer" (technically, "bow") but you may recognize the word as the root for "toxic", which I just learned is derived from the word for archer - either bc it harms like an arrow, or bc the arrows were dipped in poison, making them toxic arrows.)

Ok, let's jump to the last one: "ΙΧΘΥΕΣ" Iota-Chi-Theta-Upsilon-Epsilon-Sigma = Ichthyes

People who've played animal crossing, or maybe just love fish or biology, may recognize this as part of the word "ichthyology" - the study of fish.

By now you may have guessed that the ancient object was a calendar of sorts, and was here listing the various months with their astrological signs.

So it kind of blew my mind to realize that I can sort of read greek.

Clearly this doesn't mean that I can just open up ancient or modern greek texts and start translating - but, I'm a LOT closer to that for greek than for most other languages. And not just me, but all of us. Which is just amazing. If I opened a book in russian or japanese, I'd be totally lost. I can't read the alphabet and I have basically zero familiarity with russian or japanese root words. But as westerns who speak english and use mathematics that both largely evolved from/with greek sources, we are all a lot closer to this ancient language than we probably assumed.

Kinda puts a new perspective on the phrase, "it's all Greek to me".

The music throughout the frat house was thumping loudly, Fratboy!Jaehyn could feel the beats vibrating through the floor beneath him. The lights were flashing in a red and green pattern, the vodka was vanilla flavored, peppermint flavored schnapps mixed with everything, and every brother of the frat had a Santa hat on. There was no better way to celebrate the end of finals, the end of the fall semester, and the beginning of winter break than the annual Winter Nu Chi Theta party. It was one of their most anticipated parties of the year, sure all their parties were great, but this was their best party.

A party that was so good that Jaehyun was having a hard time finding you, despite having received your ‘here’ text 20 minutes ago. He was walking around, fighting his way through the crowds of people to try and find you. He stopped and chatted to a few familiar faces, stopped to take a shot- or more, and helped clean up some messes.

This was happening eve before the party had started, the frat brothers were passing around bottles of vodka and schnapps while they hung plastic garlands, fairy lights, and placed Christmas trees on varying surfaces. They blasted Mariah Carey and Wham through the house with no shame, singing along with no shame at all. Needless to say, by the time the party had started they were all more than a little buzzed- some more than others. *cough cough* Haechan.

Finally, he saw your friends and walked up with a smile. “Ho ho,” you turned to face him with a bright smile, “…holy shit, you look good.” Yes, Jaehyun had bought the outfit for you, but it was one thing to see the outfit on a hanger, and another to see it on you. Jaehyun had told you he was going to be dressed as Santa Claus so he wanted you to dress as Mrs. Claus. You had no reason to deny him besides the fact that it would look totally stupid but then he reminded you he would also be dressed up. Well, he wasn’t dressed up.

“This is your Santa Claus outfit? A hat?” You ask with your arms crossed across your chest.

Jaehyun laughs as he hits the pompom at the end of his hat, “duh!”

You roll your eyes, “I should have never let you watch Mean Girls. Are you all dressed as Santa then?”

His eyes widened in happy surprise, “Yes! You understood the reference for your costume!” Looking down at your red camisole and fur lined plastic skirt, you really wondered how you didn’t catch his reference before.

“So if I match with you and all the other frat bros also have so called Santa costumes on, doesn’t that mean I’m also matching with them?” You ask slowly.

Just then a very drunk Haechan stumbles by and does a double take before walking back to you with a drunken wink, “Mrs. Claus! My wife! I sure ho ho hope I’ll see you later for a not so silent night.”

Taeyong tugs him toward his room upstairs with an apologetic smile while you look at Jaehyun with a questioning arch of your eyebrow, “And here I thought your pick-up line was original. Are all of you using them tonight?”

“No…” but then you hear Johnny trying “I’ve got a one-way ticket to the naughty list if you’re interested,” on a girl from your political science class.

Jaehyun blushes but clearly not ashamed enough to try, “Wanna pretend to be presents and get laid under the tree?”

You face palm, snatching the candy cane patterned shot glass from Mark’s hand for yourself. You tilt your head back and shake your head to help with the strong minty flavor, “How many of these pick-up lines do you have?”

“Santa’s lap isn’t the only place wishes come true, baby,” Jaehyun winks dramatically with a kiss blown your way.

You bury your face in his chest while laughing. He’s barely able to hear you over the remix of Justin Bieber’s Drummer Boy, but he managed to hear, “Shut up! They’re getting worse!”

He leans down to whisper in your ear, you can feel his breath, “wanna go up to my room and Scrooge?”

You screech, “Jaehyun!”

You can feel your face heating up with embarrassment while you wrapped your arms tighter around Jaehyun’s waist to keep your face hidden in his sweater.

And then possibly worst of all, “Wanna meet Santa’s little helper?”

You shove him away, your face heating while you fan your face from the immense embarrassment you feel. “Jaehyun, people are going to hear you!”

“What’s wrong with that?” He laughs loudly.

You cross your arms, “I’m going to look like a major loser passing by everyone here on my way to your room later.”

He smirks, “so what I’m hearing is the pick-up lines are working?”

“Unfortunately,” you sigh, “take me to your room?”

Jaehyun smirks at you and guides you up the stairs. He closes his bedroom door behind the both of you while you get comfortable on his bed. Then he turns to you with a cocky smile, “You’d be the first gift I’d unwrap Christmas morning.”
