Hollywood flurry lifts Greek film industry hopes
ATHENS
A burly man in a buzz-cut crosses a busy street, nearly running into a passing cab. Nearby, two Miami police officers monitor a bustling crowd beside their squad car.
The man is Spanish actor Antonio Banderas and standing in for the Magic City is Greece’s northern metropolis Thessaloniki where Millennium Media, producers of "The Expendables" series, are shooting their latest action flick.
Banderas' new outing, "The Enforcer", is one of several high-profile shoots taking shape in the midst of an uncharacteristic flurry for Greece’s film industry, which reopened from a pandemic lockdown just in May.
The busy summer schedule includes Bond star Daniel Craig in the sequel to the surprise 2019 murder mystery hit "Knives Out" under director Rian Johnson, and David Cronenberg's sci-fi whodunit "Crimes of the Future", starring Viggo Mortensen.
Disney+ had earlier shot scenes in Athens for "Greek Freak", a biopic about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s early years as the son of poor Nigerian immigrants before catapulting to NBA basketball stardom, while Netflix wrapped "Beckett", an action thriller starring Denzel Washington’s son John David.
Veteran Greek producer Panos Papahadzis said this season's film wave is a "crash test" for the local industry after years in the doldrums.
"For 20 years we have been calling on the state... to turn Greece into a film-friendly country," Papahadzis, whose company Argonauts is co-producing "Crimes of the Future", told AFP.
"There have never been (as many productions filming simultaneously) in the history of Greek cinema," adds Vasiliki Diagouma, communication and PR manager at the Greek national centre of audiovisual media and communication (EKOME).
Greece has a long history of missing out on foreign films -- even Greek-themed ones -- for reasons including "bureaucracy and a lack of knowledge among decision-makers," Diagouma said.
"Five years ago, it would be inconceivable to shut down entire areas for film shoots," added Papahadzis.
In 2004, the year Athens hosted the Olympic Games, the Homeric epic Troy was filmed in Malta and Mexico, while Morocco scooped Oliver Stone’s Alexander.
Later sword-and-sandal films were shot in Hungary and Bulgaria.
"Forty percent of tourists choose destinations they have seen in movies," noted Papahadzis.
The final insult came in 2016 when an Athens riot scene set for Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne spy thriller was shot in Spain.
A year later, the Greek government introduced a law to attract foreign productions with cash incentives.
Foreign films, TV series, documentaries, animations, and digital games made on Greek territory are now entitled to a rebate of 40 percent of eligible expenses -- including travel, fuel, and leading cast fees.
The scheme took a while to take hold. But in the past two years, nearly 150 projects including more than 70 international productions have signed up for a combined investment of over 180 million euros ($210 million), according to EKOME.
"We may be late-comers to the game, but we have adopted the best practises in the industry," Diagouma said. "We are one of the few countries to offer (such a broad rebate)."
The sailing has not all been smooth.
In an open letter last month, the union of Greek cinema and TV technicians complained that the Banderas movie, produced by Millennium-owned Nu Boyana Studios in Bulgaria, was leaving "minimal" benefits in Greece.
"Not a single professional cinema technician taxed in Greece is working on the movie," the union said in a letter to state officials.
Nu Boyana Studios "is getting a Greek tax rebate whilst leaving minimal tax (earnings) in Greece," it added.
Liberal Kathimerini daily wrote that "almost all specialist jobs" in the movie had been staffed by "low-paid Balkan workers".
Asked about the issue, Diagouma insisted that the projects vetted by EKOME "leave behind not just money, but also expertise, good cooperation and professional connections".
"When one person is employed, this creates jobs for another 15 people. People are earning a living, this is very important for our country especially after 10 years of crisis," she said.
Nu Boyana has also pledged to create a film studio in Thessaloniki, but the project has been held up by the pandemic.
Arthouse actor Alexandros Logothetis has just returned from shooting a TV series in Ireland. He says the differences with the Greek industry couldn’t be greater.
"Almost the entire film crew was Irish. Whereas with the Banderas movie in Thessaloniki, the crews were brought in from abroad... this is a mistake. There should be safeguards and specific quotas for Greek labour," Logothetis said.
Diagouma argues that even though Greece’s second city is not specifically mentioned in "The Enforcer", "there is no better promotion for tourism in Thessaloniki... all it takes is a single tweet by Banderas."
Banderas obliged on July 7.
"Shooting in #Thessaloniki. Quiet on set!" the 60-year-old tweeted alongside a picture of himself enveloping film director Richard Hughes in a bear hug.

Gerard Butler Will Portray Mike Banning Once Again
This will be the fourth time Gerard Butler will save the people of America as he is set to return as Mike Banning in the fourth “Fallen” film titled “Night Has Fallen.”
According to a report published by Deadline, Gerard Butler will return as Mike Banning in the fourth “Fallen” film. Even if you don’t like the “Has Fallen” title, you have to accept that the franchise is one of the rare film series in Hollywood that has been able to create four action feature films. It will be the only Die Hard imitating franchise that will become a quadrilogy once Millennium Media launches its fourth film at the virtual AFM by the end of this week.
As far as Die Hard is concerned, the Bruce Willis starrer franchise has released five films up until now, and that includes the much-hated 2013 film “A Good Day to Die Hard.” The uncertainty about the highly disputed Die Hard film has pervaded for years now. Some frantic fans have suggested that the title has been decided (McClane”), and the production team might hit the floors soon. We cannot know for sure when the sixth film will be released, and if at all, it will be released despite the fact that a commercial for the DieHard batteries might have already given us hints for the things to come.
Tumblr media
Now coming back to our topic, Ric Roman Waugh, who is renowned for directing the best film of the franchise-“Angel Has Fallen,” “Snitch,” and “Greenland” (which also starred Gerard Butler), is set to return to the franchise to helm the fourth film.
Gerard Butler is at that point in his career where he needs stability, so he should keep Ric Roman Waugh close to himself because the likes of Dwayne the Rock Johnson, Liam Neeson, and others are always looking for directors like him. I am saying this because there are plenty of examples that suggest that if the actors do not remain careful, directors tend to look the other way. One of the prime examples is Liam Neeson and Jaume Collet-Serra’s fallen partnership.
The franchise had started with a decent 2013 film “Olympus Has Fallen,” which had earned $268 million globally on a $70 million budget. Its sequel “White House Down” received mixed responses from critics. It was the recipient of underwhelming affluence at the box office, which amounted to $205 million globally but on a much higher, $150 million budget.
Last Year’s film “Angel Has Fallen” has been regarded as the film of the franchise by both the fans and the critics and was well received at the summer box office. It attained a staggering $215 million in response to a meager $40 million budget.
Morgan Freeman is likely to return, but other than that, we barely know anything about the “Night Has Fallen.” The script of the film will be penned by Robert Kamen in the company of Ric Roman Waugh, and the filming will be done at Nu Boyana Studios in Bulgaria.
The film’s cast, plot, and release date have not been revealed yet.

'The Hitman's Bodyguard' Review | Hollywood Reporter
http://styleveryday.com/2017/08/11/the-hitmans-bodyguard-review-hollywood-reporter/
'The Hitman's Bodyguard' Review | Hollywood Reporter
Ryan Reynolds tries to convince Samuel L. Jackson he needs protection in Patrick Hughes’ late-summer action-comedy.
Having directed nearly every other male action star (and a slew of top-billed non-stars) in The Expendables 3, Patrick Hughes adds Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson to his stable in The Hitman’s Bodyguard, an action-comedy that takes the Midnight Run template to The Hague. The tweak here, as one will guess from the title, is that this tale’s protector (Reynolds) may be redundant given the lethal skills of the man in his care. That question prompts much bickering in this diverting but hardly thrilling romp, which fails to develop much chemistry between its stars despite their individual charms.
Though likely to perform much better than that 2014 Stallone/Willis/etc./etc. flop, the pic won’t sate those who in Deadpool found Reynolds to be a perfect mixologist of violence and self-aware comedy. Jackson’s admirers may have a better time, if only because it’s one more chance to see him play someone other than Nick Fury.
When we meet Reynolds’ Michael Bryce, he’s on top of the world: head of a personal-protection empire that works like clockwork and is (as we’ll hear ceaselessly) “Triple-A rated.” Then he somehow lets a Japanese arms merchant catch a bullet through the forehead, and things fall apart.
Two years later, Bryce retains his skills but is working for peanuts, wearing a busted watch and shuttling clients around in an economy car that (as we’ll hear ceaselessly) “smells like ass.” But he’s about to get a shot at redemption.
Bryce’s old girlfriend, Interpol agent Amelia Roussel (Elodie Yung, Elektra in Marvel’s Daredevil), has learned that a mole in the organization compromises the safety of a prisoner entrusted to her. She needs someone completely out of the loop to take care of Jackson’s Darius Kinkaid — and who’s less in the loop than Bryce, who blames his disgrace on her? After she promises she can get him back in the good graces of high-rolling clients, Bryce agrees to help.
Kinkaid needs protection because, despite being in prison for innumerable counts of murder-for-hire, he’s the star witness in an International Criminal Court case against Belarusian war criminal Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman), who has an army of goons intent on killing him before he testifies. In a preposterous contrivance, Dukhovich is going to be set free by the ICC if Kinkaid can’t make it from London to court in The Hague by 5 p.m. that afternoon.
From the start, Kinkaid displays an eagerness to leave his custodian behind and kill his would-be assassins by himself. But he’s never looking to actually escape: He’s willing to serve out his life sentence for his own crimes, so long as officials will keep their promise to pardon his also-imprisoned wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) if he cooperates. (In a dopily amusing flashback, we see how force-of-nature Sonia won Darius’ heart in a cantina brawl years ago.)
Though they’re at each other’s throats throughout, the two men obviously need to work together if Kinkaid is to testify and Bryce is to relaunch his bodyguard firm. Tom O’Connor’s screenplay works hard to stretch their feud out to sustain second-act conflict, but its banter is uninspired, hardly distracting us from the cookie-cutter nature of the underlying plot.
Even with the relative novelty of Dutch settings (which allow for a boat-cars-motorcycle chase sequence in Amsterdam), the picture feels far more generic than its A-list cast would suggest. A couple of scenes that ironically employ soft-rock standards suggest that the filmmakers were shooting for a more smart-ass tone, but Atli Örvarsson’s overheated score works strenuously against that effect, as does Hughes’ pedestrian direction. The Hitman’s Bodyguard offers more than enough shoot-’em-up to keep multiplex auds munching their popcorn, but sharper talents behind the camera might have made it considerably more enjoyable.

A Place for Everything
My Role: Spark
Director: Barnaby Boulton
Director of Photography: Matthew Lewis and Svillen Slavov
Brief Overview of the Story: A Place for Everything is a short story about a man who when at work misplaces his stapler, when he goes to look for the stapler he comes across an odd chap that runs lost and found. He quickly discovers he isn’t there to find his stapler.
Pre-Production: I wasn’t involved with pre-production on this project.
Production: This production was at Nu Boyana Film Studios in Bulgaria, just outside of Sofia. We arrived on the first day and scouted all the locations and had a look at brief blocking explanations. Second day we pulled the lighting gear from the storage and took it to our main base which was Studio 5 where 2 sets had already been built for us.
Once we had all the gear out and sorted we cracked on with pre-lighting the first scene we were shooting which was the ‘caretakers office’ scene. They wanted a low-key, warm fell with pools of light. I had done pools of light with Misandrist the previous week so I knew we’d be using Source 4′s and I knew how to rig them. We used two Source 4′s, one over the desk of the caretaker, one in the middle of the room between the elevator and the desk.
Tumblr media
Myself and Adam rigging the Source 4 in the middle (Photograph by Alex Fountain)
They DP’s wanted some interest on the background so asked if we could attach dedo’s and 300w tungsten heads to the rig and pick out some interest. I made a suggestion of putting practical lamps in all the spaces around the edge of the set, they loved this idea and went for it.
Tumblr media
As you can see in the picture the spots of light dotted around the edge, they really come into their own in the film (Photography by Alex Fountain)
We lit the elevator with Kinos and celebs, pushing the spill from the lift (the blue spill at the bottom of the photograph above) with another kino as you can see in the photograph below.
Tumblr media

Once we finished in this area we moved to the American house, which was just one in a street of several American style houses. We were shooting a dream style sequence in this house to being the DP’s wanted strong sunlight coming in so we used 2 x 4k HMI’s with half CTO to warm them up slightly through different windows and set up a 20 x 20 blackout to stop direct sunlight coming in.
Tumblr media
Me making sure the window was fully covered from direct sunlight (Photo by Alex Fountain)
We then boosted the light inside by putting a celeb above the table that the action is based around and a 575 HMI in the corner shot through 250 diff to really soften it.
Tumblr media
This photograph shows the finished feel from inside the house (Photograph by Alex Fountain)
We used this set up for 2 scenes of the film.
The night scene in this house was interesting as its the first time i’ve rigged something in a cherry picker. We put a 4k HMI in the cherry picker with full CTB over it, I then went up in the cherrypicker and directed the operator to position it, once positioned I was brought back down to the ground and it was sent back up. This was the ‘moonlight’ source for this scene. Inside the room we rigged dedo’s to the rafters and picked out small details in the room aswell as having two small practical pink flowers that made some nice shadows on the wall.
Tumblr media
Talking to Matt, one of the DPs, about gel’s to use before I went back up in the cherry picker (Photograph by Alex Fountain)
The props house was where things really got going, Adam headed down their early whilst we were still shooting the circus scene to get the cabling sorted so all areas were fed with 16amp. Then when I got down there they wanted to shoot within 40 minutes, so me and Adam got as many small tungsten heads and dedo’s we could and started rigging them on top of the racking that were holding all the props. We had a time limit in the props house, which was 1 evening - 5pm until midnight. The DP’s wanted pools of light for the characters to walk though, I think we achieved this rather well, we lit areas where the stopped a little brighter and passage areas dimmer.
We had to rig, de-rig and re-rig as we went because of the amount of heads we had. As soon as they had finished one section, we would get the lamps down and re-rig them for the next section. This method had helped me get quicker, which is a great advantage.
Tumblr media
The caretaker just got a message from a pipe, Dedo’s in the background lighting the door behind him and some of the props around. (Photograph by Alex Fountain)
There were several other scenes that we lit using similar techniques that I’ve already explained, slightly different effects because of the situations and diffusions we’d use. Below is a link to the final cut on Google Drive, the scenes described and more can be viewed here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bzi__lNMVkA1N1BrWkxIZm54UHc/view
What i’ve Learnt: I think this is a project that I learnt an unbelievable amount on, such as the following:
- I learnt how to set-up and use lights I had previously not used before. For example, Joker Bugs and Pocket Pars which are both really useful little lights that are punchy and versatile.
- I learnt how to rig a light in a cherry picker, although I only observed but I am now aware of the process and safety surrounding it.
- Working quicker, safer and more efficient. Because of the nature of the job and the lack of people in the lighting department we had to be aware and responsive at all times, this really helped me to get quicker and better at being a spark.
- Also working wth people you’ve worked with before can be an advantage. You learn how each other handles situations and how you both work together. It’s a good advantage in an environment like film.
- I found out that trusting old gear isn’t always advised. I struck up an old ARRI daylight head and within 3 minutes the bulb blew when I was right next to it. I was fine but there must have been a fault with the bulb or head because I did everything by the book. (I also learnt that the studio doesn’t care why the bulb, they still expect the production to pay for it)
Testimonial:
Tumblr media
Next Time: Because of the range of set-ups that were used in this film I will have so much more knowledge to take forward, which is amazing. I also need to get a good pair of shorts for sparking next time, sometimes it was too hot in jeans and I would have had more storage in cargo shorts.
