Now that Saint Nicolas Day is being celebrated on the QSMP, I'd like to tell some things about how I usually celebrate it! (By the way i hope this post cuts off I don't know how to do that, someone help)
Saint Nicolas Day is a holiday celebrated mostly in Europe (but I bet other places as well). Frankly, I don't know that much about how other countries celebrate, so I'll be talking mostly about the Netherlands, but I reckon some of it applies to other regions as well.
The holiday is called Sinterklaas in the Netherlands (short for Sint Nicolaas), and we celebrate it on either the 5th or the 6th. The evening of the 5th is called pakjesavond (presents eve) and it's usually when people come together and get gifts for eachother, christmas style.
Sinterklaas is very much alike to Santa Claus, in the sense that children have no idea that their family is buying the presents.
Sinterklaas is a holiday for kids above anything, and it's not uncommon for people to stop celebrating it when all the kids in their family know "het geheim van Sinterklaas" (the secret of Sinterklaas). Kids usually find out around 3rd or 4th grade, sometimes earlier, sometimes later, but everyone knows by the time they reach 7th grade because that's secondary school and also kids are bad at keeping secrets.
By the way, Sinterklaas, Santa Claus, they're basically the same person. We celebrate both a lot of the time.
So, somewhere in november, Sinterklaas and his Pieten (Piet is a common Dutch name, all the Pieten are named Piet. It's a whole thing. They work for/with Sinterklaas and there's some discussion about that but I think they're pals) leave on the boat from Spain with all the presents.
Around this same "het Sinterklaasjournaal" starts (the news but all about Sinterklaas). They make up little stories each year about what happens with Sinterklaas and the Pieten, and elementary schoolers watch this religiously (all you need to know is "Het Sinterklaas journaal, met Dieuwertje Blok"). These things change each season. Sometimes it's useful stuff, like making up special rocks the Pieten can use to open doors to bring presents, as a general explanation as to how they can get in and parents don't contradict each other.
In the past though, they would enter through the chimney, but not many people have chimney's anymore.
Other times it's shit like "We think Sinterklaas and the Pieten have fucking crashed and drowned". They've done this more than once.
Then after like a week or so they arrive in the land. Legit every city picks a day and has an "intocht". I have no idea how to translate this, but it's basically a parade with Sinterklaas and the Pieten. It's just random people though. I played Piet once and it was awesome. I put on Heelys and kids loved it.
During the Intocht kids get stand at the sides with their family and hold open bags. The Pieten put all sorts of sweets in there, but mostly pepernoten en kruidnoten (which are often also called pepernoten. I don't make the rules). You're all missing out by the way, kruidnoten are the absolute best.
After Sinterklaas has arrived in the country, kids get to put one of their shoes at the chimney or another designated place every night, usually with a piece of vegetable in it (commonly a carrot) and then they get a very tiny present in the morning.
The carrot is for Sinterklaas's horse, I'll get to the horse in a bit.
Then the 5th is pakjesavond, and the 6th it's Sinterklaas's birthday, so he and the Pieten go home again. Most people celebrate pakjesavond the 5th nowadays, but in the past it would be celebrated the morning of the 6th. People then said Sinterklaas dropped off all the presents in the night. All the kids used to get the day off from school as well the 6th, but that was a WHILE ago. Now, basically all the festivities are on the 5th, and elementary schools make a fun day out of it.
Then they all leave again and we put the christmas trees up within like 2 days.
SO, about Sinterklaas's horse. It used to be (and in many local places, still is) a white horse named Amerigo, but on the Sinterklaasjournaal they said that horse was retiring. Fine. I guess. Now it's "O Zo Snel" (O So Fast). Yes it's a dumb name, but there's a Sinterklaas-song that says "op zijn paardje, o zo snel" (on his horse, o so fast), so that's where they got it from. THE SONG DID NOT INTEND FOR IT TO BE A NAME I AM FUMING
Anyway, I think that's it. I'm very glad the qsmp is talking about it, really pleasantly surprised. Also if you made it this far I'm honestly impressed. This took me like an hour to type out not even kidding.

Right! So:
Do you do any rituals or celebrate any holidays/festivals? Yes. Many. MANY. I should make this its own post.
It's been a fair while since I took stock of my personal liturgical calendar, so let’s look that over, shall we?
(Fair warning: I have Cyclothymic Seasonal Affective Disorder, so I track time in a fair bit of detail - this isn’t remotely all of it! You did ask!)
January:
Holiday Season Closes – Take a few deep breaths and REST. January with CSAD sucks pretty hard core.
February:
Brighidsmas - AKA "dodge the low-flying Brighid and hope it's coherent this year". Often involves being crafty, lighting candles, and/or singing.
Lesser Ghede Season Opens – That’s not a technical term, nor is it any kind of established tradition. I’m just personally not supposed to deal with my Papa between late November and early February, largely for my own psychological health. Winter is difficult enough without trying to keep up with a loud dead guy, I guess. It wasn’t His idea – Damballa and Ayida Wedo ordered it many years ago when They saw how sick I was getting.
Waking Freyr - Like many Vanatruar, I find that Freyr spends the winter in the mound of the kings. Mid-February is when it's time to go wake him up. I do have a group ritual for this, based on a very detailed dream I had years ago that shaped the ritual we use in Autumn to honor his entering the mound.
Cherry Bloom – I live in dwindling orchard lands, and the most immediate lands have cherries and apricots. The cherries blooming are really obvious, and quite beautiful, and mark impending spring.
March:
Daylight Saving SPRING FORWARD – Suddenly I get a whole extra hour of SUNLIGHT in my day! Woohoo! Goodbye SAD! I can ramp down my winter depression meds now. If I stay on them year round, I get extra panic attacks in the summer.
Ostara - OSTARA IS THE SHINIEST EVAR OMG HAVE YOU SEEN MY EGG COLLECTION LOOK AT ALL THE FLOWERS WHERE’S MY CAMERA?! CAN I HAVE MORE BUNNIES PLEASE?
April:
Christian Holy Week, Easter The last few years, Holy Week has really hit hard, and I'm still not entirely sure why, but figuring it out and riding it out has been kind of a thing.
Walpurgisnacht - Mostly dedicated to the Germanic witchy goddesses.
May:
Beltaine - My observances of Beltaine have varied a fair bit the last many years. Since I joined a coven, it's settled into meeting with them and doing whatever we've got scheduled there.
Festival Season Opens
Last Spring Rains – Well, usually. About 1 in 3 Memorial Days is rainy around here, and yet somehow everyone is shocked by it every time.
June:
Anniversary with Chien - As he's an atheist, this is not a religious celebration. But it's very important to me, and thus a major marker on my calendar. We’re coming up on 23 years now!
Midsommer - Ideally, we dance the Midsommerstangen, which is made from the trunk of last season's Yule Tree. The last few years it's been a tall branch I have handy as backup, as I haven't had a Yule tree recently.
Necklacing Anniversary with Ayida Wedo - I am meant to, at the very least, meditate, make offerings, and, if necessary, re-string my Necklacing necklace. The actual practice on this is very hit-or-miss since I left AMUH several years ago.
July:
4th of July – I don’t really have a sense of that being a big holiday, so much as everyone around me does, one way or another, so it always gets marked. Nowadays this coincides with:
BayCon – Not religious in the formal sense, of course, but it is very much a gathering of MY Folk.
(This makes it look like the summer is less busy. This is a bald-faced lie. It’s just the things in the summer vary from year to year.)
August:
Lughnasadh - As of last summer, my relationship with Lugh is now formalized, so I expect Lughnasadh to be effectively an Anniversary celebration for me henceforth.
Family Beach House – Growing up my Dad and StepMom almost always spent a week or two at a beach house in the late summer, and took as many of the 5 of us kids as schedules allowed. The last many years they've started to host a family gathering each year at a beach house again. I go when I can. Any visit to the shore is an opportunity to sing to the various powers of the Waters.
Summer Dysphoria - tends to be worst at the end of August.
September:
Labor Day Weekend – It’s not that I celebrate this day in particular, but I always mark it as the transition from Summer to Autumn from a school-schedule perspective, at least.
SAD Watch – This is around when I start ramping up my meds against winter depression.
Anniversary with @AuntieAshleyDark – Our next will mark... 12 years, I think? Woo!
Mabon - I never really clicked with it before, but this is celebrated with my coven now.
Greater Ghede Season Opens
Renaissance Faire – I often don’t get to it until October, actually, but I try very, very hard not to miss entirely, because I’ve only ever missed three years in my entire life since before I was born – literally.
First Rain – The first rain in September is the beginning of the darker half of the year far more than the Equinox is. I’m told the first full moon after the first rain in September was once the liturgical New Year for one of the local native peoples who based their year on the cycle of the CA Live Oak. Miwok maybe? I’m not sure. But my Mom and I have observed it ever since.
October:
General Spooky Season - GHEDE IS THE SHINIEST EVAR OMG HAVE YOU SEEN MY SKULL COLLECTION LOOK AT ALL THE GRAVEYARDS WHERE’S MY CAMERA?! CAN I HAVE MORE CALAVERAS PLEASE?
Second Summer – The mid-autumn in California is always a second heat wave after the rains begin. Sometimes it’s hotter than August.
Festival Season Closes
Freyr Enters the Mound - We have a ritual based on a detailed dream I had many years ago. As it requires a group to practice, and places one human spiritually in the mound with Freyr for the winter, which can be a heavy load for them, we haven’t practiced it the last few years.
Halloween - Mostly hanging out, eating candy, watching bad horror movies, and answering the door for adorable children in costume, when possible.
Samhain – These days Samhain is with my coven. In the past, I've been a guest at others' gatherings, or held a quiet reverence on my own, with a dumb supper or such.
November:
Dia De Los Muertos – Living in California amongst Pagans and a very strong local Mexican community, Dia De Los Muertos is another of the ancestor reverent holidays around this turning of the wheel. No, they’re not interchangeable, they each get touched on in their own way, but this is definitely one of them. This is the one I don't much myself practice, so much as witness. The graveyards where I do much of my work honoring the dead have large Latino Catholic populations connected with them. It’s beautiful to visit at this time of year.
Personal Holy Week - My birthday is exactly a week after Halloween, and I have found the week from Halloween to my Birthday tends to be pretty intense for me, spiritually.
Daylight Saving FALL BACK – OH NOES SAD ATTACK! No, seriously, to whatever degree I wasn’t already feeling it, the time change suddenly shifting sunset up an hour hits me like a ton of bricks every year now. This is also when I experience going into the mound with Freyr. I’m clear that for others He goes in much sooner, correlating with harvest season more than light levels, but He has made it quite clear that this must be the marker for me, and that cyclical time and linear time interact with a certain amount of wiggle room.
My Birthday – Yep, I’m a Scorpio. If I don’t mark my birthday, the winter sucks a LOT more. It’s my annual celebration of ME, and I generally hold a 10-12 hour open hospitality party at my house, inviting as many layers of my friends as I can handle that year, from the closest outward.
Headwash Anniversary with Papa Ghede – A small private observance honoring my having taken an initiation to my Papa Ghede in the Umbanda House.
Greater Ghede Season Closes – No more talking to Papa Ghede until early Spring.
Winternights – This can be celebrated any time between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice as far as I can tell. In the Vanic Conspiracy it goes with our November meeting. We celebrate by filling our glasses and taking turns telling stories about our beloved dead. Everyone gets a turn. No limit on the species of the beloved dead. Preference given to stories of those lost in the last year. Preference given to personal stories of dead we knew while they were alive.
Holiday Season Opens – From a commercial perspective, I guess it’s more like open season on shopping.
Thanksgiving – This is a family gathering in the usual US tradition. I consider it a celebration of my family, my ancestors, and an expression of gratitude to the landspirits, as well as a day of respect and mourning for the people of the land, who have lost so much at the hands of too many of my ancestors.
Advent begins - My CoPartner has been enjoying rediscovering Advent as a celebration their ancestors practiced. We've been having something of a modified Christo-Pagan celebration the last several years. It's contemplative and peaceful.
December:
Oh dear gods, the Holiday Season! This list doesn’t come close to covering all my actual observances and obligations in December, but it highlights the ones that are actually holidays.
Sankta Lucia’s Day – When I can manage it, which is less often than not. But Sankta Lucia is very important to me, so I really try to honor Her, if only by enjoying the Lucia buns my CoPartner bakes for us.
Coven Yule - We usually celebrate on the Saturday closest to the Solstice.
Solstice Vigil – I tend to spend Solstice proper with a group of dear friends, staying up all night. The last decade or so, it's been consistently with my Girlfriend Ashley's household.
Christmas Eve – Every year with my Mom and my Sister. These days we include my Brother-in-Law, Nephew, and Niece. This is also the last celebration of Advent with my Partner and CoPartner.
Christmas Day – Usually with Mom's side of the family.
Boxing Day – Every year with Dad’s side of the family.
Vanic Conspiracy Yule – The list up until this point should make it clear why we hold this on whichever Monday or Friday is available between Boxing Day and New Years. So much more relaxing not trying to compete with all the other Yule, Solstice, Christmas, and Hanukkah celebrations! We burn the Yule log, feast, and gather for local charity. We missed it this year. It remains to be seen how future years will go.
New Year – Whatever party I have the energy for happens. I try not to spend it alone, at least. The last many years it's just been hanging out at home.
I also have monthly meetings with various groups, especially including my Coven lately. And there’s plenty of seasonal markers that I notice when they come and go, but can’t easily mark on a calendar. I pay attention to the phases of the moon, and which plants are in bloom, when the trees grow their leaves and when they drop them, which animals are active, etc.
@shiny-speedy-devotee’s
Polytheism Asks
What’s your least favorite myth? I don’t really look at it that way. I’m certainly not fond of the ones involving consent violations.
What’s your favorite myth? Again, I don’t really look at it that way. I suppose I like the ones that are just plain weird.
What pantheon(s) do you worship? I’m effectively an omnitheist. Depending on how one itemizes pantheons, I’ve had at least brief contact with more than I’d like to try to count. But the pantheons I relate to consistently enough to have permanent marks on my body for are: Vanir, Aesir, Orixa, Loa, Irish, Welsh, Hellenic, Kemetic, and an infinity symbol for the Whole That Is Divine. I’m also an animist.
Who is your least favorite ancient poet/philosopher/old guy who said “smart” things? Probably Thomas Aquinas. Not that he had much to say about my faith, really. But I had to read some of his work in my Religious Studies and Philosophy classes in university and am definitely not a fan.
What’s your favorite snack to share with the gods? (Curtesy of @luminarycanary) Honey is sacred to nearly all of them. I collect varietals.
Do you pray daily? If so, do you have a prayer schedule? I don’t have a schedule. I have everyday prayers, but I say them as the impulse arises, not literally every day. They go well before a meal, and before undertaking ritual work. But they’re specifically centered on the Vanir, who are Family/Home to me, so I have other set prayers/songs for other purposes, as well as whatever extemporaneous expression arises.
Do you do any rituals or celebrate any holidays/festivals? Yes. Many. MANY. I should make this its own post.
How often to you make offerings, and what is your most common offering to give? The most common offerings are a candle, a libation, or a song. Candles happen several times a week these days, if only for the Community Well Being Altar. Libations are less common. They used to be several times a month, but the reasons for that have fallen away over the last few years. Still, at least monthly. Songs are connected to specific prompts, which have also fallen away over the last couple years. Those, too, are closer to monthly right now.
How many altars do you currently have up, if any at all? Uhhhhhh *counts* 8-12, depending on how you count altars, I think? Some people distinguish between altars and shrines, at which point I’d have to say most of those are shrines. If I itemize the individual deities, I have easily dozens, but they’re mostly clumped together by pantheon or domain. I have one, maybe two working altars going most of the time lately.
Have you ever made a travel altar? In the sense of making a specific small portable altar/shrine thingy, no. In the sense of packing up a small box of whatever it seems like I might need for travel, many times. I’m not opposed - it sounds like a fun craft project. But what I need with me varies a little too much, beyond what I carry in my purse all the time anyway.
What deity do you think your taste in music best represents, regardless of who you worship? Probably Brighid. With a side of Ghede.
What has been your favorite interaction with a deity so far? I have absolutely no idea how to answer this.
What is your favorite devotional act? Singing!
Would you say there’s a certain “type” of deity you follow? Or are you more broad, without rhyme or reason? Most of the gods I work with at all frequently are on the Life/Death axis, or are Tricksters. But I will work with almost any deity who drops by, if there’s a reason for it. Magic is also a pretty common domain around here.
Have you ever worked with a deity? As opposed to what? Well, regardless, by just about every definition that might have been meant by this, yes. Working with deities is pretty well my job. I’m ordained Vanatru clergy, a spirit worker, dreamworker, oracle, and witch.
Have you ever been to a religious site (for your deities)? Several. It seems like every time I get to go on vacation, the Powers find a way to turn it into a pilgrimage. Gamla Uppsala in particular was wonderful.
Do you have any UPGs? Quite a few. Mostly about the Vanir.
What is your favorite way to communicate with the gods? Possession trance is extremely helpful, but there’s a lot of places to introduce error into the process, and it can be damaging to handle it poorly. Still, ecstatic trance states in general are a major focus of my practice, when possible.
Do you just worship deities, or do you worship heroes, spirits, etc. as well? My practices include animism and ancestor reverence. I tend to focus less on “heroes”, and more on personal connections, and general interconnectedness.
What’s something new you want to try in your worship? Herbalism. Fragrance blending. The overlap between my list of craft interests and my list of worship interests is very high.
What would your ideal practice look like? I wish I knew! The last few years have changed a lot, and I’m frankly at a bit of a loss now. It’s been exhausting. I can’t keep up what I had to build during lockdown, and the extended community practices that supported me before don’t work anymore. Figuring out what I and we need to do henceforth is a big, big task on my plate right now. More than I can really address, yet.
Have you ever received a dream/a big sign from a deity? I’m a dreamworker, so my sense of scale for this is probably skewed. But yes, several times.
Are there any new deities you want to contact? I already have more deities on my list than I know what to do with. I won’t refuse newcomers, but I’m not seeking them out.
How do you define devotion vs worship? “Worship” is the expression of love for divinity. Forms of worship correspond to “love languages”: praise, offerings, services, etc. “Devotion” is a deeply personal relationship with a specific entity. They’re different points on a continuum. Roughly the emotional difference between enjoying a party to honor a member of your community you think well of but don’t necessarily hang out with much personally, vs. paying personal attention to your best friend, lover, sibling, etc. Either way, the point is the relationship.
What is your favorite symbol of your deity(ies)? I am rather fond of the Vanatru Boar symbol.

10/01/22
Wow did September really just fly by like that? Feels like just 2 weeks ago I was doing this for August but heres my self accountability post for the end of the 9th month of 2022
Lets start with the ol resale business. Historical Days was a big success. I got rid of a lot of my old stock from the shed and made a nice profit on the weekend. Really wish I could get to more festivals and markets. That was a goal for this year that I am failing at. eBay had gone cold since the first week of September but I had 3 sales this week. With 4th quarter starting now hopefully it will be getting even better. I learned a lot last week at eBay open, lets see if I can transform that into sales. I also am looking into a booth at a local flea market that is open on Fridays. Possibly going to open there in November. Its a risk and a big step but it just may be time.
Classes started Monday in my Ag science and organic growing classes. Its been a challenge this week but I feel im back in the flow. I even got my first week assignment done early, y'all know thats a big one for me.
Things around the Homestead are winding down into what I refer to as hibernation time. The garden is ready to be put to bed, hopefully I get to that nexg week. Pears and apples need picked. Gotta dig potatoes yet and see how that harvest is. Lots of little things but its about over.
I didn't have a single Wrestling show this month. We did do our company picnic last Saturday but besides that nothing. The quiet is killing me. October has a couple but November is really bare. Gotta do something about this.
My TV back log has gotten worse. Im weeks behind on Wrestling. Its really ridiculous lol. I haven't watched any of She-Hulk or House Of Dragons. Seems everyday I add on another episode or 5 of the network shows that I try to catch as much of as possible like FBI or Law & Order. I haven't even seen the new Thor yet. I am caught up on Andor of course and am still working through my rewatch of Fear the walking dead. For someone that completely cut the cord this list is nuts!
Speaking of cutting the cord lets discuss my "off grid" life as it is. So many projects and ideas I had for the summer went unstarted. I really had hoped to have a little wood stove set up but not even close. I did get a bucket washing machine built for hand washing and of course my water collection system grew nicely. But still im way behind even though im far better than I was last year at this time.
My health has been good and ive really been doing well at eating. Im near my calorie goal almost everyday. Cooler weather really helps as does less time spent working outside. Now to finally start regular workouts again.
With just a month to go its time to start really planning and working on the upcoming holiday season here and at the Santa House. All while trying to enjoy spooky season too. Its a juggling act sometimes.
The personal life thing is pretty much as wacky as always. Mom and Dad have both been doing good. Dad has a bum shoulder but he says it is feeling a little better. Tyler has been coming around a little bit more now that he has Whiskey to take out. She sure is a cutie and becoming a good pal of mine. I been thinking again about a new cat or dog. Maybe near Christmas? My special person and myself have had a difficult time of getting together. Always seems to be something come up. Its hard with busy lives and a bit of a distance between us. We have plans for next Saturday so hopefully.... It was great to hang out with the Wrestling family last week, tomorrow I get more of that plus the Town Meeting crew. Having a small social life is sad at times but it makes me enjoy it more when it happens. A goal for 2023 is more interaction with friends and family and less alone time!
I think thats enough for tonights book. If you made it through thanks for reading. These things are always kinda hard for me to do but I really feel that they along with you who do read help me keep myself in check.

1st Pandemic Hanukkah, 1918
WWI soldiers mark Thanksgivukkah
The 5th of our first-ever 8 days of Hanukkah Tumblr series featuring surprising Hanukkah-related National Archives records. By Miriam Kleiman, Program Director for Public Affairs.

Not only did Jewish soldiers in 1918 have to mark the holiday during a war and a pandemic, they also had to combine the Festival of Lights with the Festival of the Harvest. Pictures follow from the combined 1918 Hanukah/Thanksgiving celebration at the Jewish Welfare Hut in Seward Park, NYC.
The Jewish Welfare Board was formed on April 9, 1917, three days after the United States declared war on Germany, to support Jewish soldiers in the U.S. military during World War I. See related records in our online catalog.

Simon Snow’s Guide to the Best Diwali
AKA, all the delicious Diwali food that Simon would love. ❤️
Here’s a teaser...
And the rest is below the cut!
Let’s start off with an overview of Diwali! (Pronounced Di-VAH-lee.) Celebrated on the night of the new moon, usually in late October or early November, Diwali is the festival of lights and a commemoration of the triumph of good over evil. During this holiday, people decorate their houses with festive colors, light hundreds of candles and oil lamps, and set off firecrackers into the night. It is the largest and most widely celebrated holiday in India, with a variety of colorful customs.
Rangoli are colorful designs crafted at the entrance of homes to welcome the goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi, and usher in the New Year. Rangoli features in my zine fic for Let it Snow!
Diwali has its origins in Hindu mythology with the story of the Ramayana. Rama (Rahm) was a great king and warrior who completed a hero’s journey and returned home after a 14 year exile. However, there was no moon that night, so the villagers set out thousands oil lamps to light the path home.
Diwali is celebrated over 5 days; Diwali itself is the 3rd day, and the 4th is the Hindu New Year! Read more about Diwali here.
Alright, now for the fun part.
Simon Snow would love Diwali because one of the core traditions is exchanging food and sweets as gifts with your family and friends. Every year, we spend a few days making mithai (milk sweets) or baked goods, and then it’s like the world’s best secret santa. We receive platters of assorted sweets and savories throughout the entire week leading up to Diwali!
Let’s start with the sweets. The main desserts eaten during Diwali are mithai, various milk sweets that usually include gram (chickpea) flour and nuts or coconut. They are vibrantly colored and usually arranged beautifully on platters! There is a huge variety—here are some examples of arrangements.
Most are simply a combination of condensed or powdered milk, sugar, and gram flour or nut flour. In addition, they’re flavored and adorned with ingredients like rosewater, cardamom, saffron, and even pounded silver.
Here are some of the more popular types!
Kaju Katli: Cashew mithai, always cut in diamond shapes, and topped with real thin-pounded silver. A classic!
Ladoo: Chickpea flour or semolina condensed milk sweets, rolled into balls. They’re amazing, and the texture is unrivaled. Chickpea flour is fine and gritty, so it’s like biting into a ball of kinetic sand... but actually edible. When I was a kid, we used to make ladoos with coconut and use food coloring to make the Indian flag! Here’s the mix we received this year from a friend:
Barfi: Milk squares that can be made with various flavorings, like coconut, almonds, walnut, etc. So soft. So delicious. Sometimes they’re bright pink.
Soan Papdi: chickpea flour squares that flake away in strands when you bite into them, like if you condensed candy floss into a bar.
Peda: I don’t even know what’s in these, they’re just fucking delicious.
Alright, onto the other sweets!
My personal favorite: gulab jamun. Soft, perfectly round dumplings made of like, magic. Basically. They’re sweet, fried, flavored with cardamom, soaked in a sweet rosewater syrup, and served warm. If you haven’t tried these, you’re missing out—Indian grocery stores, and certainly some normal ones, sell them in big cans and you can heat them up on the stove.
Rasmalai: my other favorite. I don’t know how to describe these—happy spongy dumpling disks served cold in a sauce that’s basically ice cream, but better. Pistachios, delicate rosewater, and sweet creaminess. It’s basically heaven.
Two photos, because they’re that good. (These are definitely Baz’s favorite, by the way.)
Jalebi: Essentially, batter is piped into pretzel shapes, like how you make a funnel cake, and then fried, and then soaked in sugar syrup. You bite into it with a satisfying crunch, and then the syrup floods out and it becomes chewy. It’s a dentist’s worst nightmare. I mean, look at this shit:
Who even came up with this? I don’t care, I love it. Tis the season for tooth rotting.
Kheer: Indian rice pudding... or sometimes it’s made with vermicelli. With almonds, and saffron, and... agh. I dream about it.
Last but certainly not least, gajar ka halva.
This stuff could build a cult following if it wanted to, I swear. It’s like if carrot cake one day said fuck it and stopped pretending it was healthy. It’s ground carrots, sugar, ghee, milk pistachios... so good.
I almost posted this without even going over the savory foods. Who even needs them?
...Okay, fine.
Diwali food is traditionally vegetarian, and it’s pretty standard fare: naan, rice, samosas, daal, paneer makhani, etc. The appetizers are top notch. It’s literally all fried.
That spiral thing is a chakli, jalebi’s savory friend. Just... a fried spiral. Various crispy things are eaten. It’s great.
Brb, might actually cry from how hungry I am right now.
Simon would love aloo tikki, a north Indian specialty... imo, the best way to make potatoes.
Pakoras, too: mixed vegetable fritters served with chutney.
Pani Puri/Golgappa: The best street food. You take a baby puri shell. Crack the top. Fill it with a spicy potato mix, and then add mouthwatering tamarind sauce.
Paneer Makhani (butter paneer) would be Simon’s favorite veg dish. Soft cheese in butter sauce... sounds right up his alley. 😂
There are a ton of other different dishes made with various vegetables and sauces and spices, like four types of daal, and if I continue this will go on for ages. So I’ll just do a special shoutout to chicken tikka masala, the national dish of the UK lol. ❤️
Shoutout to Penelope Bunce as well for being half-Indian and thereby giving me a totally valid reason to write a thousand-word rant about Indian food on Tumblr and claim it’s fandom. Shoutout also to Simon Snow for his canonical love of Indian food. 😂
If you’ve made it this far, I hope you enjoyed, found this educational, and most of all... I hope you’re really hungry now. 😂 Go eat some Indian food to celebrate. I know you want to.
Happy Diwali, everyone! ❤️❤️❤️

So because fall is just around the corner, I thought I’d tell you guys what some of the Necromancer AU’s holidays are!
Festival of souls:
A holiday/festival in celebration of Vale and Vacuo giving freedom and sanctuary. Usually celebrated with pumpkin carving, candy making, and with plenty of little soul decorations.
Another tradition is to use ghost plants (revived plants) as garland! It lasts about 2 weeks from October 15th to 28th
There are plenty of things to do in the festival of souls:
Pumpkin carving
Lantern lighting
Dressing up in costumes or fun outfits
Candy/food making
Buying things at the festival stands
Among other things!
Lights out:
Being exactly what it sounds like, it’s a scheduled time where the power is turned off in the major cities and where the citizens sit on top of buildings to admire the stars. This has cultural significance for many new necromancers who had just arrived from atlas, being the first time they’ve ever really seen stars.
Takes place on the 31st of august
It’s a relaxing time to gather with friends and family and lasts about 2-3 hours
Glynda’s birthday!:
Takes place on the 27th of August
Qrow’s birthday!:
Takes place on the 4th of November
Valian Talent Festival:
A festival celebrating the talents of its citizens, music fills the streets even more than it normally does, food is sold along with other items such as jewelry and art.
Celebrated on November 1st - 7th, lasts a week
Appreciation:
A celebration similar to thanksgiving in which it’s a day to give appreciation to those around you, it’s celebrated with gift giving, a big meal, and plenty of friends and family. The people of Vale are also known for letting strangers join their meals so that they aren’t alone on the holiday. It’s a good time to make friends!
Celebrated on November 19th

Interest Check Results are in!
We got a total of 97 responses!
Thanks to everyone who filled it out and for all the sweet comments 💞 We are super excited about this event too!
Results under the cut!
— How interested are you in this event?
📍 62 marked 5! (63.9 %)
📍 32 marked 4! (33.0 %)
📍 3 marked 3! (3.1 %)
— How would you like to contribute to the event?
🔨 Writer: 47 (48.5%)
🔨 Artist: 30 (30.9%)
🔨 Beta: 15 (15.5%)
🔨 Pinch Hitter: 6 (6.2%)
— What should the minimum word count be?
🖊️ 3k words: 62.9 %
🖊️ 5k words: 36.1 %
🖊️ 7k words: 1.0 %
Based on this, we've decided to set the minimum word count for the Bang at 3,000 words.
There won't be a maximum word count, but all works should be finished by posting dates.
— How long should the creation period be?
⏱️ 3 months or less: 35.1 %
⏱️ 4 months: 40.2 %
⏱️ 5 months or more: 24.7 %
Based on this, we've decided to set the creation period at 4 months.
We want to clarify that the 4 months for the creation period will be counting from the moment the teams are announced (October 4th) up to the start of posting (Feb 1st). Therefor, in theory, writers that sign-up from the start (July 26th) would have a little over 2 extra months to work on their fics.
This is due to writer sign-ups lasting one (1) month, the 2 weeks we give for writers to work on their summary before submissions and the rest of September being for summary submissions, viewing, selection and making of teams.
Since there were some that raised concerns over the duration and/or overlapping with other events/life in general, we want to clarify that, if you squint, you could have around six months to work on this project as a writer. Furthermore, taking into account that November and December are busy months for a lot of people because of school, work, holidays, end of year festivities, etc, the creation period will include the entire month of January as well.
— What other types of artwork, beside illustrations, should artists be allowed to submit?
🖌️ Videos: 61.9 %
🖌️ Edits: 63.9 %
🖌️ Music: 49.5 %
🖌️ None of these: 17.5 %
We've decided to accept those above 60%, meaning videos and edits will be accepted as artworks alongside illustrations.
We received other suggestions too! We'll ask about them later on.
— Do you have a discord account / are you willing to make one?
Since 94.9 % answered 'yes', we will keep discord as our main channel of communication.
Only collaborators will be asked to join for their sign-ups to be complete. Everyone else is welcome to join too if they want 💛
Sign-ups open July 26th!!

Hey! Since we've just passed Halloween, which holidays do you think are face's favourite? I can imagine Art really getting into bonfire night and everyone else being really confused lol
Haha, I hope you had a nice Halloween! And yeah, I can totally see Arthur doing that as well. I imagine Arthur typically only enjoys holidays that require zero effort on his part. If he has to be a host or buy gifts, etc., then it’s a hassle for him. That’s also why he enjoys it when Alistair throws a Burns supper and invites him over -- because he can just arrive for the free food and recite poetry.
Alfred makes a big deal out of every holiday and can’t pick a favorite. He’s the most festive one of the family. He starts buying Christmas gifts and cards in October and puts up his Christmas lights the first week of November. Even as a grown man, he’ll go trick-or-treating and wear a costume for Halloween. He also adores Thanksgiving but obviously doesn’t do any of the cooking. He expects everyone around him to host the holidays. He’s the kind of guy who goes running off to Walmart right after Thanksgiving dinner for the early Black Friday deals. That said, although he normally isn’t one to be a host, for the 4th of July, he always throws a big barbecue and is a good cook when it comes to whipping stuff up on the grill. He also makes his own honey barbecue sauce from scratch, and it’s to die for.
Matthew loves Thanksgiving. Of course, he celebrates Canadian Thanksgiving in October, and he enjoys inviting the whole family over and cooking for them. He puts his turkey in a maple and brown sugar brine, and it comes out exquisite and tender. For dessert, he makes his famous pecan pie. Matthew’s house is the place to be for an amazing Thanksgiving feast. As for other holidays, he also gets really into Christmas celebrations. He puts a great deal of thought into Christmas gifts, and sometimes, it can be really agonizing for him. He doesn’t want to give a friend or family member a gift they won’t like, and feels awful if someone feigns excitement or joy. He wants to make sure he genuinely picked something that they will be able to make use of.
Francis enjoys Christmas Eve, as that is the day when he makes a big meal for the family and attends church service at night. He wants nothing more but to spend time with his loved ones and enjoy good food with them. He doesn’t mind being a host at all. Like Matthew, you can count on him to serve you a fabulous feast. He’ll plan what he’s going to make for Christmas Eve dinner weeks in advance and tries to spice things up every year. His favorite main course to make is a roast goose with orange glaze. And if you want some lovely champagne or wine with your dinner -- look no further, Francis has you covered.

Some random headcanons for the holiday
Before OS the only times Ben and Gwen saw each other were Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the 4th of July
The extended Tennyson family are 100% those people that decorate for every Good Old American Holiday, trying to be something resembling a postcard
The Bellwood plumbers do not do this. They used to, way back when, but then Devin showed up, went ‘oh so we can decorate for our holidays’ and started doing so and encouraging others to do so and by the time the Plumbers Kids parents were joining the lot holiday decorations had been banned entirely because 1) it turns out between the various cultures there were always decorations going up, 2) Devin’s decorations included things like animal bones, and 3) how dare people expect the higher-ups on Earth to openly acknowledge alien and non-white-Christian cultures
Kevin has celebrated Thanksgiving maybe four times in his life, all of those were with his stepfather’s family, he has not eaten turkey in late November since he was nine (“It’s not my fault, turkey season ends back at the farmhouse in fucking October”)
For a 1-3 week span in late-November/early-December he gets together with one-to-all his relatives on his mom’s side, they head into the woods, and you don’t see them again until their allotted time is done or they’re delivering game to a soup kitchen
The non-meat parts get divided up and either used by the family, sold directly, or smuggled offworld where you can get more for them (“So many people look at smuggling like it’s a one-way thing, but if you’re smart-”)
Argit generally spends the time doing his own thing or with Kevin
Rook generally spends the time with the Tennysons, occasionally talking about harvest festivals back home (would it be nice to celebrate that instead? yes. is he going to do so before Rayona moves to Earth and starts setting some fucking boundaries? no because the only person he knows who would come is maybe Argit) (Kevin has standing plans, sorry, and the Tennysons... are the Tennysons)
The rest of the Plumber Kids Thanksgiving things vary
Alan’s family goes out to his maternal grandmother’s every year, it’s very traditional, he will fight you over a sweetpotato casserole (and has fought his brothers)
There’s generally three turkeys at the event- one smoked, one roasted, one deep-fried- all of which are raised by Alan’s grandparents. They don’t raise much anymore, their children having taken over for the most part, but they insist on raising the turkeys and always cook the meal out of their own garden
Cooper spends the weekend with the Albrights
Thanksgiving for the Wheels family kinda got absorbed into a Kinet feast day earlier in the month celebrating the end of the stormy season where people get the chance to fucking breathe a bit
What they serve varies, it’s generally a big assortment of shit from their various cultures and sometimes the timelines match up and Kevin’s family sends them some fresh game
The Armstrongs celebrate it, some. It’s not a big deal but there’s a few extra sides at dinner and generally some sort’ve ‘exotic’ meat for the main (sometimes they go for alien meats, which are much more expensive but also Manny’s mother really appreciates when they get shit from home)
(Manny also has not had a turkey in late November in many years. You would think, with his family owning a butchershop, this wouldn’t be the case, but that shits for customers)
Elena’s taken to spending the holiday with the Armstrongs
Mike hasn’t had a Thanksgiving since his father died and has mixed feelings about the situation (on the one side, Thanksgiving is massive amounts of high calorie food, on the other, no having to listen relatives he only saw once a year make snide comments about how much he’s eating because apparently if you’re a mutant three servings of potatoes is excessive)

Chance the Rapper
Chancelor Johnathan Bennett (born April 16, 1993), known professionally as Chance the Rapper, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and activist.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Chance the Rapper released his debut mixtape 10 Day in 2012. He began to gain mainstream recognition in 2013 after releasing his second mixtape, Acid Rap, which gained critical praise. He then released his third mixtape, Coloring Book, in 2016, which garnered further critical acclaim and attention. It earned him three Grammy Awards, including the award for Best Rap Album; upon winning, it became the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy Award, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. His debut studio album The Big Day was released on July 26, 2019.
Alongside his solo career, Chance the Rapper is a member of the Chicago collective Savemoney, and is the vocalist for the band the Social Experiment; they released the album Surf in May 2015, led by trumpeter Nico Segal. He is also involved in social activism in the Chicago community where he resides.
Early life
Chancelor Johnathan Bennett was born in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Ken Williams-Bennett, was an aide to the late Chicago mayor Harold Washington and then-Senator Barack Obama. His mother, Lisa Bennett, worked for the Illinois Attorney General. Bennett grew up in the middle-class neighborhood of West Chatham on Chicago's South Side. When Bennett was sixteen, his father began to work in the Department of Labor during President Barack Obama's first term. Bennett personally met President Obama in his youth and discussed his aspirations to be a rapper, to which Obama responded with "word". Bennett was originally going to move to Washington, D.C. following Obama's win in the 2008 presidential election, though those plans eventually fell through. Bennett attended Jones College Prep High School where he was a member of the Jewish Student Union.
Bennett's interest in music began with Michael Jackson, who he exclusively listened to on cassettes until the fifth grade. Growing up, Bennett's parents were constantly playing music, including Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke and other artists in the jazz and gospel genres. Bennett began listening to hip-hop after hearing "Through the Wire" by Kanye West on the radio while walking through Hyde Park, Chicago. After finding out the song was on West's debut album The College Dropout, Bennett purchased the album, making it the first hip-hop album that Bennett listened to. Bennett considers West a huge influence on him and has said that he was inspired to begin rapping by West. Bennett and West met each other in August 2014 at Bonnaroo Music Festival.
Bennett began rapping in the sixth grade when his cousin let him start using his studio. In his freshman year at Jones College Prep High School, Bennett formed the hip-hop duo Instrumentality alongside a friend. Many of Chance's earliest performances took place at the YOUmedia Lyricist Loft at Harold Washington Library in Chicago. After placing second in a local songwriting contest, Bennett met then-Chicago Mayor, Richard M. Daley who enjoyed his music. Bennett spent most of his junior year and a small amount of his senior year writing a draft for his debut project, 10 Day, which was later released after Bennett was suspended for ten days after being caught smoking cannabis.
Music career
2011–2012: Career beginnings and
10 Day
At Jones College Prep High School, some of his teachers ridiculed his aspirations to become a musician. In early 2011 during his senior year, following a 10-day suspension for marijuana possession on campus, Bennett recorded his first full-length project, a mixtape entitled 10 Day (also known as #10Day). In December 2011, he released a song titled "Windows", and publicly announced his 10 Day project. In February 2012, Bennett was highlighted as one of Complex magazine's "10 New Chicago Rappers to Watch Out For". Bennett says he spent "about eight months recording, writing, and making connections off of the hunger to put out something". Bennett released the mixtape on April 3, 2012, and it has since been downloaded over 500,000 times via mixtape-sharing site DatPiff. The mixtape was well-received locally and helped Bennett make connections with producers such as Chuck Inglish, Kenny Jame$ and Blended Babies. The mixtape also grabbed the attention of Forbes magazine, which featured it in the publication's Cheap Tunes column.
2012–2015: Acid Rap and The Social Experiment
In July 2012, Bennett appeared on American rapper Childish Gambino's sixth mixtape, Royalty, on the track "They Don't Like Me". Gambino would go on to ask Bennett to join on his first concert tour of North America as his opening act.
On April 30, 2013, Bennett released his second mixtape, Acid Rap, on DatPiff. The record has been downloaded over 1.5 million times. Bennett enlisted guest appearances from Twista, Vic Mensa, Saba, BJ the Chicago Kid, Action Bronson, Childish Gambino and Ab-Soul. Acid Rap was well-received by critics. At Metacritic, the mixtape received an average score of 86, based on 21 critics, which indicates "universal acclaim". It was nominated for Best Mixtape at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards. On May 6, 2013, the song "Paranoia" (produced by Nosaj Thing), after initially being featured as a hidden track on Acid Rap, was released as a contribution to Yours Truly and Adidas originals' "Songs from Scratch" series.
In June 2013, Bennett was featured in a commercial for MySpace as part of their relaunch, alongside fellow American rappers Mac Miller, Pharrell Williams and Schoolboy Q, among others. In July 2013, Acid Rap debuted at number 63 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, due to downloads on iTunes and Amazon. In August 2013, Bennett performed at the Chicago music festival Lollapalooza. Acid Rap was listed on multiple 50 best albums of 2013 lists, including 26th for Rolling Stone, 12th on Pitchfork's list, and ranked 4th by Complex. It was also listed as one of NPR Music's 50 Favorite Albums of 2013. Bennett began his Social Experiment Tour in Champaign, Illinois, on October 25, 2013, lasting until December 19, 2013.
In March 2014, Bennett appeared in a shoppable online video for Dockers, promoting the brand's spring line, in which Bennett talks his style, love for creating music, and how it feels to live in Los Angeles. On May 5, 2014, XXL revealed Bennett was included in their annual freshman class, alongside fellow up-and-comers Isaiah Rashad, Ty Dolla $ign, Rich Homie Quan, Vic Mensa, August Alsina, Troy Ave, Kevin Gates, Lil Bibby, Jon Connor, Lil Durk and Jarren Benton. During Fall 2014, Bennett and other artists participated in Verge Campus tour. In November 2014, Bennett was presented Chicago's "Outstanding Youth of the Year Award" by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
In January 2015, Bennett was listed number 7 on the "Forbes 30 Under 30" 2015 music list. In March 2015, Bennett released a short film called Mr. Happy, which was directed by Colin Tilley. Mr. Happy centers around the main character, named Victor, who is struggling from depression and was attempting to commit suicide. After many failed attempts to kill himself, he discovers Mr. Happy. On April 30, 2015, Bennett gave a lecture at Harvard University's Hiphop Archive & Research Institute. Just before midnight on May 28, 2015, Surf was released for free on the American iTunes store as an iTunes Exclusive. The album received high acclaim from music critics, receiving an aggregate score of 86 on review site Metacritic, which indicates "universal acclaim", based on 17 reviews. In June 2015, Bennett performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in the superjam concert collection. He also made a guest performance with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar, on stage with Earth, Wind & Fire. On July 19, 2015, Bennett and Lil B announced that they recorded a collaborative mixtape. The two rappers released it on August 5, titled Free (Based Freestyles Mixtape).
On October 13, 2015, Bennett released a video for a new song, titled "Family Matters", on his website. The song, which shares the same name as his fall 2015 tour with D.R.A.M., Metro Boomin, Towkio (and Hiatus Kaiyote on select dates), is a rework of the Kanye West song "Family Business" from his 2004 album The College Dropout. A few days before this, a video surfaced online of Bennett performing a new song live, ending the song by saying the words "third mixtape", leading many to believe the wait might be coming to a close for his next release. On October 27, 2015, Bennett premiered a new song, titled "Angels" featuring Saba, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. On December 12, 2015, Bennett performed on Saturday Night Live, on a new song, titled "Somewhere in Paradise".
2016–present: Coloring Book and The Big Day
In 2016, Bennett was a prominent figure on Kanye West's album The Life of Pablo, co-writing and appearing on several tracks, including "Ultralight Beam", "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1", "Famous", "Feedback", and "Waves". According to West, the album's release was delayed due to Bennett's desire for "Waves" to make the album's final cut. Bennett was also featured on a track titled "Need To Know" on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's album This Unruly Mess I've Made. The following March, Bennett was featured on Skrillex's remix of Hundred Waters' "Show Me Love". On April 16, 2016, Chance and other musicians, including Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monáe, and J. Cole, met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the My Brother's Keeper Challenge initiative.
On May 12, 2016, Chance's third mixtape, Coloring Book (promoted as Chance 3), was released, streaming exclusively on Apple Music. In the first week, the mixtape was streamed over 57.3 million times, which was equivalent to 38,000 units sold, debuting at number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart. It became the first release to chart solely on streams. The mixtape was met with widespread acclaim from music critics, and on review aggregator site Metacritic, received an average score of 89, based on 21 critics, which indicates "universal acclaim". On July 13, at the 2016 ESPY Awards show, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he performed a tribute song titled "I Was A Rock" for the late Muhammad Ali. On August 16, 2016, Chance wrote the single "We the People" paired in a Nike commercial titled "Unlimited Together", a film directed by Hiro Murai. A second commercial was released on October 4, by Nestlé, to promote the Kit Kat bar, with Chance starring in costume remixing their jingle. On September 15, 2016, Chance began his Magnificent Coloring World Tour in San Diego.
Bennett announced the Magnificent Coloring Tour with an event called Magnificent Coloring Day Festival at Chicago's Guaranteed Rate Field, with a line up including Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Skrillex, Tyler, the Creator and Lil Uzi Vert, taking place on September 24, 2016, being the first-ever music festival at U.S. Cellular Field. This one day festival event also featured a surprise appearance by Kanye West. Bennett launched a campaign in conjunction with rapperradio.com to get his music on the radio on August 17, 2016.
In September 2016, H&M solicited Bennett to headline their new campaign. In November 2016, he continued on the Magnificent Coloring World Tour, but cancelled the rest of his shows on the European leg due to personal reasons. In November 2016, Bennett announced during an interview with DJ Semtex that he was working on his debut album. Bennett was offered a chance to sign with Kanye West's GOOD Music in December 2016, though he refused due to his popularity as an independent artist and the freedom of not being attached to a label. In an August interview about his debut album, Bennett said he may sell the album, a departure from his previous projects' free distribution format. After a report was leaked claiming that audio distribution platform SoundCloud was close to bankruptcy and had laid off most of its workers, Bennett had a phone call with SoundCloud CEO Alex Ljung. Following the phone call, Bennett went onto Twitter, posting that SoundCloud is "here to stay". It was later reported that Bennett was just reflecting on what Ljung had previously published in a press release following the leak. Soon after, Bennett released a SoundCloud exclusive track with Young Thug called "Big B's" to benefit the platform, a surprise move that was planned in response to the SoundCloud bankruptcy leak.
In February 2017, Bennett performed at the 59th annual Grammy Awards, receiving 7 nominations and winning 3 Grammys. His performance featured Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann, along with a gospel choir and orchestra conducted by Tom Brooks. On July 13, Bennett performed a NPR Tiny Desk Concert where he recited an original poem. The poem, entitled "The Other Side", was crafted on his ride from his hotel, in Washington D.C., to the NPR music offices and was written with black marker on typing paper. Chance also performed, "Juke Jam", a song off of his album Coloring Book, and a cover to Stevie Wonder's song "They Won't Go When I Go" released in 1974.
In July 2017, Bennett was nominated for an Emmy Award for his song "Last Christmas" that was performed on Saturday Night Live. He shares the nomination with Kenan Thompson, Eli Brueggemann, and Will Stephen in the category for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. In August 2017, Bennett headlined day three of Lollapalooza at Grant Park in his hometown of Chicago. His performance drew record crowds with some estimates making it the largest attended performance in the event's history. In November 2017, Bennett curated and headlined the Obama Foundation community event at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The event capstoned the inaugural Obama Summit event which featured special guests including former President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Andra Day, Gloria Estefan, Aziz Ansari, Lena Waithe, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and more.
In 2018, he featured on "Logout", a song from Saba's album Care for Me and "Best Life" from Cardi B's debut album Invasion of Privacy, and released 4 new songs in July. Bennett performed at Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life on October 31, 2018, a tribute concert celebrating the recently passed rapper Mac Miller. On November 29, 2018, Bennett released 2 new songs, "My Own Thing" and "The Man Who Has Everything", and announced on February 11, 2019, that his debut album would be released sometime in July of that same year. During Super Bowl LII Bennett appeared alongside The Backstreet Boys in a commercial for Doritos with the two artist performing a remix of "I Want it That Way" In May of that year Bennett was featured in Ed Sheeran's song "Cross Me" On July 26, 2019, Bennett released his debut studio album The Big Day.
In 2019, he wrote the song "True Kinda Love" for Steven Universe: The Movie alongside Rebecca Sugar, James Fauntleroy, Macie Stewart, and Julian Sanchez, with vocals being performed by Estelle and Zach Callison. In December 2019, Bennett cancelled his "The Big World Tour" for the second time in order to spend time with his newborn daughter.
In January 2020, it was announced that Bennett will be the host of the reboot of Punk'd that will air on the streaming service Quibi.
Artistry
Musical style
Bennett has stated in interviews with XXL and Complex that Kanye West, James Brown, MC Hammer, Prince, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Esham, Eminem, Souls of Mischief and Freestyle Fellowship have influenced him. When asked about the gospel influences in his music, he also has stated that Kirk Franklin is one of his favorite artists, and his favorite composer.
Bennett's music has been described as versatile and uplifting. His music generally contains jazz-inspired melodies and gospel influences. Bennett's lyrics usually have references to Christian theology, his struggles with his faith and his upbringing. Chance incorporates choirs into his music to attempt to maximize the gospel undertones. Sharde' Chapman at HuffPost has described Bennett's lyrics as "creative" and "colorful".
Bennett often does traditional singing songs, and possesses a light-lyric tenor voice with an expansive vocal range that spans three octaves. Bennett's vocal range reaches its extreme low at the bass F♯ (F♯2), and rises to its peak high at the tenor high F (F5).
Fashion
Bennett's fashion style is a large part of his public image, and he has taken interest in the industry. Bennett has designed hats for the Chicago White Sox. The Hollywood Reporter has said that Bennett is "redefining fashion" with his style of generally wearing overalls and contesting traditional hip-hop fashion norms. Bennett wore a suit that was meant to imitate Michael Jackson at the 2017 BET Awards. Bennett was seen wearing Thom Browne clothing at the 2017 Grammys. Bennett has been known to wear a signature hat with the number three on it. “I’ve rationalized it to myself that it stands for the third mixtape, the Holy Trinity, and the three-pronged family of myself, my daughter, and my girl.” Bennett said in an interview in regards to the meaning of the number three.
Activism and politics
Bennett's father, Ken Bennett, has been involved in Democratic Party politics on the local and national level. Ken Bennett worked for Barack Obama as a presidential appointee and as an aide. Ken Bennett also worked on Obama's presidential campaign in 2008, and has worked as an aide to Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel and as 2019 Chicago mayoral campaign co-chair for Toni Preckwinkle. Despite his family's ties to the Democratic Party, Bennett has called himself an independent voter, though he has a history of supporting Democrats. Bennett volunteered with Barack Obama's reelection campaign by phonebanking in Hyde Park, Chicago and has given speeches at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics.
In November 2014, Emanuel named Bennett as Chicago's Outstanding Youth of the Year for his activism. Bennett's work to support Chicago youth includes hosting Open Mike nights for Chicago-area high school students in collaboration with Chicago Public Library, which drew the attendance of fellow Chicago natives and celebrities like Hannibal Buress and Kanye West. In December 2015, Bennett joined with Detroit-based nonprofit group Empowerment Plan to start an initiative called Warmest Winter 2016. The initiative raised money to give 1,000 specially manufactured coats, which doubled as sleeping bags and shoulder bags, and were manufactured by homeless citizens of Detroit, to homeless citizens of Chicago. In June 2016, he hosted the Teens in the Park event, a free youth festival on Chicago's Northerly Island that drew an attendance of 3,300.
Bennett co-created a new nonprofit called SocialWorks in September 2016, an extension of his Open Mike program which aimed to create youth programs for residents of Chicago, among other goals. Open Mike nights and the Warmest Winter initiative later became part of SocialWorks.
Bennett has actively fought to combat gun violence in his hometown of Chicago and in 2014, along with his father, promoted the "#SaveChicago" campaign. The campaign sought to stop gun violence over Memorial Day Weekend. During 2014's Memorial Day weekend, Chicago went 42 straight hours without a shooting. Bennett met with President Obama at the White House on April 16, 2016, to discuss My Brother's Keeper Challenge, an initiative of the United States Federal Government to promote intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice, with other musicians, including Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monáe, J. Cole, and others. Bennett started a Twitter campaign for May 23, 2016 using #May23 to stop gun violence for 42 hours.
On March 6, 2017, after a meeting with Governor Bruce Rauner that did not go well only days before, Bennett announced his intention to donate $1,000,000 to Chicago Public Schools in order to help offset the lack of government funding provided. Following this, a movement arose to try and inspire Bennett to run for mayor of Chicago. This was backed by fellow media personalities including musician Drake.
Bennett is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, having criticized him numerous times and drawn comparisons to former President Barack Obama. During the 2016 Presidential election, Bennett said he was not scared of a Trump presidency. When asked why by GQ, Bennett said "You gotta just understand, like, shit has been fucked-up, right? Like, 'Make America Great Again', that's not a real thing because shit ain't really switched up for [white middle class]". Bennett endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton on October 6, 2016, expressing concerns about the way she was treated in the media and also expressing that she could "fix Chicago" and led a "march" to numerous polling stations with thousands of Chicagoans. Following the victory of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, Bennett said "Trump was going to win, anybody in the world who's surprised by the election of Donald Trump has been ignorant of racism, and the tides and patterns of American history and world history." In February 2017, Bennett posted publicly on Twitter that he was worried President Trump was going to change constitutional term limits. Bennett has compared Trump's fascination with Chicago to "going to war". In August 2017, Bennett claimed to have a "bigger voice than Donald Trump". Bennett also became an outspoken critic of Chicago Mayor Emanuel later in his term, though his father had worked for Emanuel and he himself had earlier accepted Emanuel's support.
Bennett has been an active Twitter user, with several of his tweets on social issues going viral. For example, Bennett garnered attention from Time magazine when he tweeted criticism of an article titled "In Wake of Weinstein, Men Wonder If Hugging Women Still OK". Following Kanye West's Tweets announcing his support of Donald Trump in April 2018, Bennett tweeted in support of West's freedom to choose to be Republican, sparking controversy among his fanbase. Trump later tweeted thanking Bennett for his support of West, though Bennett disavowed Trump's praise.
In July 2018, Bennett purchased the Chicago journalism website Chicagoist from WNYC. The website had been inactive since it was abruptly shut down by former owner Joe Ricketts in November 2017, and Bennett planned to relaunch the website later in 2018. Chicagoist did not relaunch in 2018, and it is currently planning a 2019 reopening, according to its website.
In the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, Bennett was an active supporter of Amara Enyia. Bennett initially endorsed Enyia at a press conference in October 2018. Bennett campaigned with Enyia and made major donations to her mayoral bid. Fellow rapper and Chicago native Kanye West also donated to Enyia's campaign. In the February 2019 election, Enyia finished fifth out of fourteen candidates, and did not advance to the mayoral runoff. Lori Lightfoot and Preckwinkle, who had hired Chance's father as campaign co-chair, instead advanced to the runoff. In the runoff, Bennett endorsed Preckwinkle, criticizing Lightfoot as having worked against the interests of Chicago's black community.
In 2020, Bennett will be honored by Unicef at their annual gala in Chicago with the UNICEF Chicago Humanitarian Award.
Personal life
Bennett lives in his hometown, Chicago. Bennett once shared a house in North Hollywood with James Blake. Describing his time in North Hollywood, Bennett called it "ungodly". After graduating from high school, Bennett attended a community college for a week before dropping out. Bennett has taken numerous recreational drugs during his lifetime, including LSD and Xanax, but has since stepped away from them.
Family
His younger brother, Taylor Bennett, is also a rapper. Both brothers began rapping at the same time and have a similar style. Both the rappers also draw inspiration from Chicago native Kanye West.
In July 2015, Bennett announced that he was expecting his first child with his girlfriend Kirsten Corley, whom he began to date in 2013. In September 2015, Corley gave birth to their daughter, Kensli. Kensli was kept out of social media until December 31, 2016, when Bennett posted a picture of her on Instagram. In May 2016, after they had stopped living together, Corley wanted the courts to declare Bennett as the father of their daughter, requiring him to pay child support.
In February 2017, Bennett's child support case reopened in an attempt to work out child support terms and a parenting schedule as Bennett and Corley moved to separate residences. The Chicago Sun-Times published an article about a dispute between the two in March 2017. Bennett replied to the article saying "Y'all better do y'all jobs and stop worrying about how good my family is. Just a friendly reminder. Don't let anybody get between you and your family." On March 21, 2017, the dispute was settled out of court. Corley and Bennett reconciled, and on July 4, 2018, they became engaged after 5 years together. The two married on March 9, 2019 at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, California with guests including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.
Bennett spends much of his free time with his daughter, and frequently takes her on outings. These have included a Chicago Bulls basketball game, meeting the Obamas and working out.
In September 2019, Chance's wife Kirsten announced they had their second daughter named Marli.
Christianity
Bennett is a Christian and refers to Jesus Christ in many of his songs. Bennett was raised as a Christian by his grandmother but later fell out of the faith. He rediscovered his faith when his daughter was born with atrial flutter. Speaking about the situation, Bennett said "[I just] pray a whole lot, you know, and need a lot of angels and just see shit in a very, like, direct way. And…you know, God bless everything, it worked out well." Bennett wrote on Twitter following the situation on January 31, 2016, "Today's the last day my old life, last day smoking cigs. Headed to church for help. All things are possible thru Christ who strengthens me."
Bennett has labelled himself as a Christian rapper following the release of his mixtape Coloring Book. Bennett believes that God is to thank for his blessings and his success. He has attended multiple dates for Kanye West's Sunday Service, most notably performing his verse on "Ultralight Beam" at Coachella 2019 and in his hometown at Chicago's Huntington Bank Pavilion.
