Northern State University Basketball

This past weekend, I drove from Kansas City to Aberdeen, SD. It’s a long drive (roughly eight hours, if you don’t stop), and there’s not much between Kansas City and Aberdeen. As I drove North, it got cloudier, and I began to see more and more snow - and blowing snow across the highway. (Over the next couple of days, it got snowier, colder and I saw more ice and accumulation). It was a bit of a different world.....

Aberdeen is a city that has roughly 25,000 residents. It’s very remote. This isolation and remoteness seems to create great pride and hospitality. Northern State University is located in Aberdeen.....and there is a wonderfully crazy and passionate fan base for Northern State. They love their Wolves!

From a basketball standpoint, Northern State has led all of NCAA Division II in attendance for 13 consecutive years. The have the largest center-hung video board in the state of South Dakota. They have the pep band, and inflatable tunnel and smoke and pre-game video, and cheerleaders and dance team...... Northern State does game-day so, so well. Northern State basketball is an “event” in Aberdeen. It’s a big deal in the community. The players and coaches are celebrities in the community. Frankly, it’s really neat to witness.....

I went to Aberdeen for several reasons. We will be launching the Small College Basketball Champions Classic at Wachs Arena (home of Northern State) this coming November 18 & 19. I went to tape a video piece to announce the teams and matchups (we’re planning to send out the press release, along with the videos, and launch the webpage, tomorrow (Thursday, January 27). I also want to tour the facilities, get a feel for the hotels and talk through the details of the event even further. Additionally - of course - I wanted to watch a couple of games, both because I’m a basketball junkie, and because I wanted to get a feel for their game-day operations. Ohhh, and it wasn’t an accident that I went for the wild and wonderful tradition known as “I Hate Winter”. The whole experience was great! Game day is really something special in Aberdeen.....and this is a combination of the tremendous community support, along with great organization and planning from the staff at Northern State.

I am grateful to Head Coach Saul Philips, along with Austin Hieb and Ashley Gauer, who treated me so well. They were tremendous hosts, and I am grateful.

Saul Phillips was just so good to me...... I was well aware that he was very busy, in the midst of the conference season and had two conference games while I was in town. I wanted to be sensitive to this reality......yet he is so personable, and he took the time to drive me around town, take me to his house to meet his wife, show me around the facilities, welcome me into their video session and shoot-around. It was wonderful, and HE was wonderful.

I am so excited that we’re partnering with Northern State University for the SCB Champions Classic. I think that we’re going to be able to create a special experience for the student-athletes, coaches and all of those involved with this event.

It was a wonderful trip, and I look forward to my next trip to Aberdeen, where they are just so passionate about college basketball and so proud of their community. Thank you, all, for being so good to me.....

15 teams that can get a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament

Baylor and Kansas are two of the teams fighting for an NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed. But they’re far from alone in the race. | Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

The 2019-20 season has been wild so far. And that means there are some unexpected names in the crowded race for the top four spots in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Did you realize that Selection Sunday is now less than two months away?

Seriously, I didn’t notice it myself until about 9 p.m. on Wednesday — when it struck me that it really was January 15th and that the second half of the season was indeed well underway. At this time last year, I examined the cases of the 14 teams most likely to end up on the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 seed line eight weeks in the future. Indeed, four of those squads — Gonzaga and a trio of ACC squads in Duke, North Carolina and Virginia — found themselves atop the bracket’s four regions on March 17th. Similarly, four of the 11 squads featured in 2018’s version of this exercise, namely Kansas, Villanova, Virginia and Xavier, anchored regions in that season’s tournament.

So, at this point of the season, it’s a rather simple exercise to whittle the top seed race from 353 teams to a dozen or so. However, the, um, uniqueness of the 2019-20 season so far means our group of contenders is a little larger — and more flawed — than usual.

Teams are grouped by conference, starting with the Big 12.

Baylor Bears (14-1, 4-0 Big 12)

NET ranking: 1 SOS rankings: 67 (overall)/162 (non-conference) Quad 1 and 2 records: 5-1 vs. Quad 1/2-0 vs. Quad 2 Best wins: No. 2 Kansas (away), No. 7 Butler (home), No. 15 Arizona (home), No. 20 Villanova (neutral) Loss: No. 45 Washington (neutral)

Baylor first served notice that it might be a national contender on November 24th, when the Bears took down Villanova in the Myrtle Beach Invitational title game. Since then, Scott Drew’s club has put together one of the most impressive collections of victories in the country, capped by Saturday’s road win at Kansas. While 2020’s version of the Big 12 isn’t quite as fertile from a Quad 1 victory perspective as 2019’s, particularly when considering home games, Baylor has a great chance to improve upon its top-tier victory total the rest of the way. After all, it gets both Kansas and West Virginia in Waco and has already won at both KU and Texas Tech. That means the Bears aren’t likely to be intimidated in any remaining road environment, save perhaps Gainesville, where they lost in the 2018 Big 12/SEC Challenge, and Morgantown, site of their regular-season finale.

Kansas Jayhawks (12-3, 3-1 Big 12)

NET ranking: 2 SOS rankings: 1 (overall)/1 (non-conference) Quad 1 and 2 records: 7-3 vs. Quad 1/1-0 vs. Quad 2 Best wins: No. 6 Dayton (neutral), No. 8 West Virginia (home), No. 9 Stanford (away), No. 20 Colorado (home) Losses: No. 1 Baylor (home), No. 5 Duke (neutral), No. 20 Villanova (away)

Potential Quad 1 games remaining: 4 (0 home, 4 away) Potential Quad 2 games remaining: 8 (6 home, 2 away) Most important remaining games: Tennessee (January 25th), at West Virginia (February 12th), at Baylor (February 22nd)

The strength of the Big 12 and a typically stout non-conference schedule keep Kansas a in the chase even after Saturday’s loss to Baylor. One factor that works against the Jayhawks is a backloaded Big 12 schedule. They’ve yet to meet Texas Tech and must play both Baylor and West Virginia on the road after splitting their home games against the pair. Also factor working against Bill Self’s squad: an uninspiring matchup with Tennessee for the Big 12/SEC Challenge. If the event used a Bracketbusters-style flexible scheduling model, we probably wouldn’t have gotten an Auburn-Kansas rematch, as the Tigers are also slated to play at home, but an LSU-KU contest would have been a possibility.

West Virginia Mountaineers (14-2, 3-1 Big 12)

NET ranking: 8 SOS rankings: 2 (overall)/3 (non-conference) Quad 1 and 2 records: 3-2 vs. Quad 1/6-0 vs. Quad 2 Best wins: No. 17 Wichita State (neutral), No. 18 Ohio State (neutral), No. 32 Texas Tech (home) Losses: No. 2 Kansas (away), No. 74 St. John’s (away)

Potential Quad 1 games remaining: 7 (2 home, 5 away) Potential Quad 2 games remaining: 6 (4 home, 2 away) Most important remaining games: Missouri (January 25th), Kansas (February 12th), at Baylor (February 15th), Baylor (March 7th)

West Virginia has recovered nicely from last season’s 15-21 campaign that ended in the College Basketball Invitational (after a run to the Big 12 Tournament semifinals). Bob Huggins’ club has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2019-20 season and non-conference wins over Wichita State (in Cancun) and Ohio State (right when it looked like the Buckeye were set to ascend to the top spot in the polls) established them as national contenders. But with the Buckeyes falling back down to earth and a questionable loss to St. John’s in the Big East/Big 12 Battle, the Mountaineers really need a true top-tier win or three to establish themselves as a true No. 1 seed threat. The Big 12 schedule provides that with a visit from Kansas and pair of games with Baylor. But an SEC Challenge game against a Kentucky or LSU would have been preferable to a contest with Mizzou.

Duke is the first of three ACC contenders — and the gap between the trio and the rest of the 12 teams in the conference could really damage all of their chances at the top line. It’s a good thing that the Blue Devils own two of the best non-conference wins possessed by the lead pack, as they won’t have many chances to add to their Quad 1 win total the rest of the way. That’s thanks to the league’s collective struggles and an unbalanced schedule. At this point last season, Mike Krzyzewski’s team had more than twice as many Quad 1 win opportunities available, nine, than the four currently on the schedule. Plus, as Tuesday’s setback at Clemson illustrates, Duke will always be in danger of picking up questionable losses — and they already have two. Keep adding to that total, and the chances of consecutive No. 1 seeds will drop.

Florida State Seminoles (15-2, 5-1 ACC)

NET ranking: 14 SOS rankings: 29 (overall)/45 (non-conference) Quad 1 and 2 records: 3-1 vs. Quad 1/4-1 vs. Quad 2 Best wins: No. 13 Louisville (away), No. 31 Purdue (neutral) Losses: No. 47 Indiana (away), No. 80 Pittsburgh (away)

Florida State was expected to be decent this season, but an Opening Night loss to Pitt led many to believe the Seminoles would take a step back following two straight trips to the NCAA Tournament’s second weekend. But Leonard Hamilton’s squad routed Florida in its next game and hasn’t looked back, other than in an 80-64 loss at Indiana in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Victories at contender Louisville and over struggling Virginia in the past two weeks have cemented FSU’s status in the lead pack. However, the lack of a true marquee non-conference win means the ‘Noles will likely need to win at Duke and complete a season sweep of Louisville to enter the ACC Tournament with a shot at securing a shocking No. 1 seed.

Louisville Cardinals (14-3, 5-1 ACC)

NET ranking: 13 SOS rankings: 10 (overall)/72 (non-conference) Quad 1 and 2 records: 1-3 vs. Quad 1/4-0 vs. Quad 2 Best win: No. 28 Michigan (home) Losses: No. 14 Florida State (home), No. 32 Texas Tech (neutral), No. 38 Kentucky (away)

Potential Quad 1 games remaining: 5 (0 home, 5 away) Potential Quad 2 games remaining: 4 (3 home, 1 away) Most important remaining games: at Duke (Saturday), at Florida State (February 24th), Virginia Tech (March 1st), at Virginia (March 7th)

Louisville is the final potential ACC contender and the one with the longest odds, thanks to a relative lack of quality non-conference wins — the Cardinals’ second best came against MAC-leading Akron. That means they may rue a Jimmy V Classic loss to Texas Tech and overtime setback at Kentucky as major missed opportunities on Selection Sunday. Making matters worse for Chris Mack’s club, while they have five Quad 1 win opportunities left, none of those are set for the KFC Yum Center.

The Big Ten has the opposite problem of the ACC: a ton of depth (thanks to the presence of 12 teams in the Top 50 of both the NET and KenPom rankings) ,with a dearth of contenders for the top line. It hasn’t always been like this in the 2019-20 season. Back on December 2nd, Michigan State, Maryland, Michigan and Ohio State all resembled serious challengers for both the Big Ten title and No. 1 seeds. But the final month of 2019 wasn’t kind to three of those teams, leaving the Spartans at the top of the heap. However, an inexplicable blowout defeat at Purdue last Sunday knocked Tom Izzo’s team down the seed list a bit. The good news for Michigan State is that conference play will give them plenty of opportunities to rebound. The bad news is the conference’s depth could result in the Spartans picking up too many losses to be seriously considered for a top seed.

Wednesday night’s game at Hinkle Fieldhouse might have just changed both the trajectory of the Big East and No. 1 seed races, as Butler entered its showdown with Seton Hall in the driver’s seat and left it having ceded control to the Pirates. Still, all is not lost for the Bulldogs, thanks to the copious Quad 1 win opportunities this season’s conference slate provides, though they’ll need to do a ton of work on the road to take advantage of them. But not everything is guaranteed in the quality win department, as I’m not sure Stanford will remain as highly-ranked as it is now. If that changes, the loss to the Pirates and a 53-52 defeat at Baylor could leave LaVall Jordan’s team in the lurch in two months’ time.

Seton Hall Pirates (13-4, 5-0 Big East)

Seton Hall served notice of their intentions on Wednesday, long after many fans had assumed the Pirates were not a national contender thanks to four early losses, with consecutive defeats at Iowa State and Rutgers the most damaging (particularly since the Hall had defeated the Cyclones in the Bahamas just 10 days earlier). But Myles Powell missed most of that game in Piscataway (along with a pair of subsequent wins) and Sandro Mamukelashvili hasn’t played since breaking his right wrist early in Ames. If Kevin Willard’s Pirates can keep it up, and they get back to full health, the Selection Committee will evaluate them as a whole unit. And that means the door is open for the Hall to earn a surprising No. 1 seed.

Stanford Cardinal (15-2, 4-0 Pac-12)

The original draft of this article featured two Pac-12 teams, but Oregon sleepwalked its way to a loss at Washington State on Thursday night — their fourth of the season overall and second against a sub-100 team. So, now only Stanford represents the conference on this list. And the Cardinal’s hopes are more fanciful than anything, thanks to a lack of Quad 1 non-conference wins. Sure, Jerod Haase’s team could pick up a few more in conference play, but Stanford would likely need to finish with zero-to-two Pac-12 losses to be considered a legitimate threat. And with the conference much improved when compared to the last two seasons, that’s highly unlikely.

That will change as conference play unfolds, so the Tigers still have their fate in their own hands.

So, LSU appears here alongside the other three power-league unbeatens, despite four losses and a NET ranking that’s closer to 30 than 20. Will Wade’s Tigers do have one thing working for them, particularly when compared to their conference rivals from the Plains: a pair of Top 25 wins. However, the Bayou Bengals will have to avoid slip-ups in SEC play to become a more serious contender. And that won’t be easy considering the quality win opportunities left — particularly away from Baton Rouge.

Like the Big 12 contenders above, both sets of SEC Tigers are probably wishing they had stronger opposition waiting for them on January 25th.

But considering the Bulldogs have a pair of Quad 1 wins in hand and the possibility of picking up anywhere between two and four more depending on how they, BYU and Saint Mary’s navigate the best West Coast Conference in many years, Mark Few’s team is in position to follow a formula that’s earned it No. 1 seeds in two of the past three NCAA Tournaments. However, with Gonzaga’s non-conference schedule ranking so lowly, the margin for error in the Bulldogs’ remaining games might be a little tighter than in 2017 and 2019.

Gonzaga has some competition in the “best non-power-league team on the West Coast” category this season — the nation’s lone remaining unbeaten. To earn a No. 1 seed, San Diego State will more than likely need to keep winning all the way through the Mountain West Tournament. That’s because the Aztecs did most of their heavy lifting in non-conference play — as their win at BYU and the two power victories recorded at the Las Vegas Invitational will be far better than anything they’ll record in conference play. While Gonzaga is navigating the strongest WCC in years, just one Top 100 team currently appears on the remaining schedule for Brian Dutcher’s squad (though New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado State are all close). That gives the Bulldogs a slight advantage in the race to claim the West Region’s No. 1 seed.

And with no Top 30 wins on the Flyers’ profile and no prospect of picking one up in an improved, but still not great Atlantic 10 (with five teams ranked between 50th and 62nd in the NET), they really needed to reverse one of those defeats to have a serious chance at a No. 1 seed. But if Anthony Grant’s squad can run the table in the Atlantic 10, it will have hope.

An to rebound awaits the 76ers (27-16) Sunday at Madison Square Garden, as they face the New York Knicks (10-32).

Despite a triple-double from Ben Simmons and a 30-point performance from Jimmy Butler, the Sixers felt Joel Embiid’s absence Friday (right ankle soreness), falling to the Atlanta Hawks in the final seconds, 123-121, at The Center.

Brett Brown said afterwards his team can do better, and Sunday’s trip to New York offers a chance to bounce back and build momentum with a difficult stretch of the schedule looming ahead.

The Sixers have won their last six matchups against the Knicks, including decisive victories in the teams’ first two meetings this season. Brown commended his club, particularly his bench, after it won its first meeting with the Knicks, 117-91, on November 28th.

“I thought the guys that came in held the floor,” Brown said. “I thought they played organized basketball, competitive basketball.”

T.J. McConnell was a plus-25, producing six points and six assists, while Mike Muscala tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Sixers shot 54.0 percent from the field, and out-assisted the Knicks, 34-14.

Most recently, the Sixers topped the Knicks, 133-109, at home on December 19th. Ben Simmons had a triple-double (13 pts, 12 reb, 10 ast), and Joel Embiid finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

1. The Big Ten conference recorded nearly $759 million in revenue for the 2018 financial year. This figure represents a year-on-year revenue increase of 48% for the Big Ten and exceeds any comparable annual figure amongst its NCAA rivals. A major factor is this boosted revenue is Big Ten’s new television rights deals which resulted in payments of around $54 million to the 12 longest-standing schools of the conference’s 14 teams. Maryland and Rutgers received smaller revenue share amounts but this was topped up with loans from Big Ten against future revenue shares. Compared to other NCAA athletic conferences, the Big Ten is way ahead in terms of revenue. The SEC reported revenues of around $660 million for 2018, with an average of $43.7 million afforded to each of its 13 member schools. The Big 12’s revenues didn’t even reach half the value that the Big Ten generated, with the conference securing $374 million for 2018. TV rights remain king, as shown by the Big 10 data and the recent announcement that Conference USA has made a 4-year deal with the NFL Network for a 10-game package of C-USA football games.

2. Indy 500 has a new broadcast partner: NBC. Viewership for the crown jewel of American racing events has been on a steady decline since 2015, but all of that may change with a new partnership. All IndyCar broadcasts will now be shown on NBC networks and will cover the racing series with improved marketing and a bigger approach to race-day coverage. According to Indianapolis Business Journal, the network has run dozens of IndyCar ads since March — many for the Indy 500 – and TV ratings have been up. IndyCar ads have been running during other major sporting events such as the Kentucky derby and the NHL Playoffs with a new approach to grab some more casual viewers. Thank to the new partnership, viewership is up 21% for the first four races. Under NBC’s contract, eight IndyCar races will be on broadcast TV this season, up from five last year on ABC. Indy has started to also market to a younger demographic as the sport owns one of the oldest audiences across all major us-sports; to date, its has been paying dividends.

3. The 2019 NBA playoffs have been lacking in action and ratings. According to The Atlantic, this year’s playoffs started on April 13 and won’t end until sometime in June making it roughly as long as Major League Baseball and the National Football League's playoffs, COMBINED. Through the first two weeks of the 2019 postseason, the rating numbers were down by 18 percent. One reason for the decline is the absence of now Laker, Lebron James, who missed the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade. However, the boost of second round ratings, which were the highest TV numbers since 2012, indicate that fans are still compelled to tune in to more competitive matchups. Another issue with extended playoffs is the stress and fatigue it puts on the players: the Golden State Warriors won their last series against the Portland Trail Blazers without Kevin Durant due to injury. Although adding extra games may draw in more money for the league, the long term effects of losing fans to “boring” playoffs may seriously hurt. The NBA may need to start looking into reverting to the previous 5 game format for first round basketball playoffs to help quell the extensive playoffs or potentially give a bye-round to the top ranked teams in each division.

4. The Blues win the West to create a rematch 49 years in the making for the NHL. The St. Louis Blues are marching into the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in decades and have revived expectations for the team in the midwest. The Blues were one of the bottom teams in the NHL as of January 3 and now they are in the Stanley Cup Finals. According to The Star, the turnaround came after Craig Berube replaced Mike Yeo as coach in November and Binnington took over as the starting goaltender in January. St. Louis has went 0-12 in its three previous Stanley Cup appearances. The last time these two teams met in the Stanley Cup, the Blues dropped the series 0-4 with an enshired goal from a flying Bobby Orr that is still one of the greatest hockey pictures of all time. The Bruins are the likely favorite to win the cup after having come in second overall in the regular season. The St. Louis Blues are the oldest active team to never have a Stanley Cup win and in a year where the improbable has happened for a last place team entering 2019, a win against the Bruins could seal one of the greatest turnarounds of all time.

5. NBA Playoffs help to display big tech and provide a glimpse into the future of sports in Seattle. Seattle is getting an NHL franchise and a high-tech arena in 2021. According to GeekWire, tech executives from companies based in the Pacific Northwest have been attending private VIP events for potential season ticket holders. Meanwhile, during Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals at Oracle Arena, Google displayed its voice assistant to help “turn down the lights,” play music, and provide stats for the Golden State Warriors. After the game, all 19,596 fans walked away with a free Google Home Mini device. At $1 million, it was hailed as “the largest and most valuable giveaway of a Google product at a live sporting event in history.” Silicon Valley plays a big role in the Warriors’ success as players like Kevin Durant, Steph Curry and Jonas Jerebko all noted the region’s forward thinking as a partial reason they chose to play with the team; they all have investments in a range of tech ventures. Looking at the success of the Warriors, the new NHL team in Seattle would provide an opportunity for the region’s tech companies, like Amazon and Microsoft, to further plunge into sports.

6. The NFL draft is headed to Cleveland in 2021 and Kansas City in 2023. In conjunction with the relocation of the Oakland Raiders and opening of their new stadium, the 2020 draft was awarded to Las Vega. Now, the Browns will be celebrating their 75th anniversary with the draft events taking place around FirstEnergy Stadium in 2021. According to ESPN, the Kansas City Chiefs plan to host the draft near Union Station and the National World War I Museum and Memorial for their draft in 2023. Since last holding the draft in the traditional New York location in 2014, the NFL has taken the event on the road to five different cities. The league still has not moved on bids for the 2022 draft, saying about 20 cities are interested in hosting that year. This year’s draft in Nashville, Tennessee had more than 600,000 people attend over the three days which marks a dramatic increase from 250,000 in Arlington the year prior.

7. NASCAR acquires ISC for $2B with a dozen more tracks. NASCAR announced the $2 billion purchase of International Speedway Corp. which will give it control of key racetracks and set itself up for sweeping changes that could save America’s popular racing series which has been in decline for several years. This deal should close by year’s end. ISC is one of two major facilities companies that host NASCAR races, along with Speedway Motorsports Inc. According to AP News, NASCAR gaining control of a dozen tracks would seemingly make it easier for the racing league to alter its schedule, including the possibility of hosting fewer events in order to maximize its profit. The parent company of Speedway Motorsports made an offer last month to acquire all its outstanding common stock, which would privatize SMI and make it better positioned for an anticipated NASCAR overhaul. Many big sponsors have left NASCAR in recent years — Cup Series title sponsor Monster Energy is in the final year of its deal — and television ratings hit all-time lows at 26 events last season. Because NASCAR is a private company it won't have to publicly report attendance revenue and other financials allowing the company more leeway in their attempt to rebuild the iconic racing series.

8. OTT platform FuboTV and FanDuel form a sports wagering partnership in New Jersey. According to Deadline, the deal makes FanDuel the exclusive sportsbook, online casino, exclusive advertiser, and horse racing and daily fantasy sports partner of the live TV streaming service. It will also expand FuboTV’s sports offering for consumers when FanDuel’s betting data is integrated on the Fubo platform. Initially, odds and other gambling information will only be added to the mix in New Jersey, though general sports data will be integrated more broadly afterward. Additionally the TVG and TVG2 horse racing networks affiliated with FanDuel will be available to Fubo subscribers nationwide, joining the 90-plus channels in the $55-a-month base package. TVG2 will be on the Sports Plus tier, which brings more than 20 additional channels for an extra $9 a month. This is huge as it is the first real push for a OTT sports platform to incorporate sports wagering into its properties and could open the floodgates for others to follow suit.

Duke vs. Kansas: Takeaways on the Blue Devils and Jayhawks after opening night

Here’s what we learned about Duke and Kansas in the Champions Classic.

A year ago, Duke blasted Kentucky to begin its season in the Champions Classic and set the tone for the age of Zion Williamson. Williamson is in the NBA now and Duke has a new team of highly touted freshmen in his place. There weren’t as many fireworks this time around, but the Blue Devils still handled No. 3 Kansas 68-66 in Madison Square Garden.

Duke took control of the game in the second half with a balanced scoring effort led by sophomore point guard Tre Jones, who finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists on 5-of-14 shooting. Duke only shot 36 percent from the field in the win, but its defense wrecked havoc with ball pressure to hold onto the lead throughout the second half.

Kansas turned the ball over 27 times in the loss. Sophomore point guard Devon Dotson was impressive scoring the ball in defeat, finishing with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, but you can bet head coach Bill Self will talk to his team about taking better care of the ball.

These were our takeaways from Duke and Kansas to after one game.

Duke has impressive depth, but no clear star

Mike Krzyzewski is known for riding short rotations into March, but he’s going to have a dilemma trimming it down this year because he has so many capable players at his disposal. On opening night, Duke’s rotation went nine deep with every player attempting at least three shots from the field. The days of Duke relying on the superhuman efforts of one or two players appears to be over.

Duke has a nice veteran core this year, with Jones drawing most of the headlines after choosing to return for his sophomore year. There’s also Jordan Goldwire to provide some playmaking and defense in the backcourt, as well as Javin DeLaurier and Jack White in the front court. Add in the talented freshman class, and Coach K will have some time and flexibility to play around with his lineups before March.

Duke’s freshmen are still effective even if they aren’t superstars

There is no freshman on Duke’s roster this season that will be as productive as R.J. Barrett or as tantalizing as Cameron Reddish, let alone as superhuman as Williamson. In their place is another esteemed collection of talent that can be effective if not nearly as magnetic.

Cassius Stanley finished with 13 points and might have been Duke’s best player in the win. He is a monster athlete on the wing with a 46-inch vertical who looked great in transition and as a slasher on opening night. Matthew Hurt — likely Duke’s top draft prospect — also showed off his inside-out game to finish with 11 points and three three-pointers.

There’s also Vernon Carey Jr. (11 points, six rebounds), and Wendell Moore (two points on 1-of-6 shooting) who both profile as major contributors down the line.

Everything runs through Udoka Azubuike for Kansas

The biggest matchup problem in college basketball is Kansas’ Udoka Azubuike, a statement that works both literally and figuratively. The center is back in Lawrence for his junior season, and he remains every bit as massive (listed at 7-foot, 275 pounds) as he’s ever been. Hulking big men like this may be outdated in the NBA, but until KU meets a team that can run him off the floor, expect almost every Jayhawks’ possession to run through Azubuike in the halfcourt.

Azubuike battled foul trouble throughout the night to finish with a modest eight points and nine rebounds, but his presence loomed over the entire game. It’s already apparent Bill Self’s preferred offensive attack will start with getting the ball to his big man in the post. Kansas has a bit of a space crunch inside with the similarly huge David McCormack (6’10, 265 pounds) starting next to him, but there isn’t a player in America who can stop Azubuike from getting two points if he gets deep post position and finds single coverage.

Kansas might not have enough shooting

Azubuike’s gravity inside would be more meaningful on a spaced floor with shooters dotting the arc. That isn’t the kind of team Kansas has. The Jayhawks shot just 4-of-11 from three-point range, putting too many non-shooters on the perimeter to make teams pay for doubling Azubuike.

Sophomore guard Devon Dotson projects as the only reliable shooter in the starting lineup. He’s flanked by Marcus Garrett who went 12-of-49 (24.5 percent) on threes last season, and Ochai Agbaji, who hit 30 percent of his threes last year on just over three attempts per game. There isn’t a ton of shooting on the bench yet either, though freshman Jalen Wilson could provide some as the season goes on.

Agbaji did hit two three-pointers vs. Duke, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Kansas is huge inside with fast guards and slashing wings. But if a team can’t shoot, it’s hard to win it all the way the game is played today.

It’s been a long week since Auburn Basketball last took the court but we’ve made it through and now we get rewarded with back to back nights of Auburn Basketball in Brooklyn!

Auburn has made their way to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and tonight, the Tigers take on the 5-1 New Mexico Lobos out of the Mountain West Conference. Auburn will face either Richmond or Wisconsin on Tuesday pending on how tonight’s results pan out.

Get to Know New Mexico

The Lobos only blemish on the year came at UTEP when what would have been a game tying half court 3-pointer was ruled no good because time had expired. Otherwise, the Tigers could be facing an undefeated New Mexico team tonight. This Lobos team also is coming off a 1-point win at New Mexico State Thursday night. The Lobos scored 90+ in their first 4 games and average 85.5 points a game coming into tonight’s matchup. New Mexico’s roster is made up of several players who have transferred from other Power 5 schools.

The Lobos are led by senior guard JaQuan Lyle (#5) who began his career at Ohio State. Lyle is playing outstanding after missing the last 2 years due to the transfer and then rupturing his Achilles forcing him to miss all of last year. In his first 6 games this year, he is averaging 19.8 points, 5.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds a game. He is shooting 43.8% from 3 this year (14-32). He also averages 5 turnovers a game so one of the keys to this game will be can the Tigers continue to play great defense and force Lyle into turnovers that he has been susceptible to so far this year. I expect to see Isaac Okoro on him throughout the game tonight.

Senior forward Carlton Bragg (#15) has spent time at both Kansas and Arizona State in his career before making his way to Albuquerque. He is 3rd on the team in scoring averaging 11.8 points but also averages 9.8 rebounds a game. His matchup in the paint against Austin Wiley and Anfernee McLemore will go a long way in determining the outcome of this game.

Junior forward Makuach Maluach (#10) is the 4th Lobos player averaging double figures averaging 11.5 points per game. Rounding out the Starting 5 are juniors Texas A&M transfer J.J. Caldwell (#11) and UConn transfer Vance Jackson (#2). Jackson averages 6.7 PPG and Caldwell 5.3 PPG with Caldwell adding 5.3 assists a game.

While the Lobos go primarily with an 8-man rotation, they get solid contributions from their bench. Senior forward Corey Manigault (#1) began his career at Pittsburgh and while he doesn’t start, he’s 2nd on the team at 12.3 points a game. Junior guard Zane Martin (#0) who started his career at Towson averages 10 points a game off the bench so 2 of the 5 Lobos leading scorers come off the bench for Paul Weir’s group.

Keys for Auburn

Did the Headband make the trip to Brooklyn for Samir Doughty? He’s averaging 26.5 points a game in the 2 games in which he’s worn the headband. He’s also been a viral internet sensation over the last week for destroying Jordan Burns of Colgate on this play last time out.

All kidding aside, Doughty is putting together a really good year so far leading Auburn with 18.8 PPG. He’s played great on both sides of the ball and scored in a variety of ways. While Doughty played his role well last year, he has stepped up so far this year as a leader on this team. With Doughty being from Philadelphia, this is almost a home game for him so I have a feeling Samir’s going to step up big once again wanting to play well close to home.

I feel like Danjel Purifoy is due for a breakout game as well. While he’s 3rd on the team averaging 11.2 points a game, he’s gone about his business somewhat quietly as Doughty and Isaac Okoro have gotten the headlines. The last time Auburn played in New York City, Danjel put up 27 points and it seems like the bright lights bring out the best in Purifoy. If Samir isn’t tonight’s leading scorer, I’m thinking it could be Danjel.

Prediction

I’d be lying if I wasn’t a tad nervous about this game. The Lobos have played well to start the season and are riding high after knocking off New Mexico State. Auburn is the better team but we’ll see which Tigers team comes out after a week off. I think Auburn wins the game but I fully expect this to be a close game.

The Best Players And Biggest Upsets Of 2018 In (Almost) Any Sport

As 2018 draws to its conclusion, we wanted to look back at the year in sports — the best (and worst) teams, the results that surprised us most and the athletes who inspired us. On Friday, we covered the best and worst teams of 2018, so now it’s time to look at the best players and upsets of the year.

You can read that first article for more detail on the methodology behind our rankings — but the “best players” are derived by taking a similar approach, this time using an all-in-one value metric of choice in each pro sport for which we have Elo ratings1 and ranking every player relative to other individual seasons since 2000. (Again, this includes all stats from seasons that either started or ended in the 2018 calendar year, so some numbers included in those seasons may have been compiled in 2017.) We’re also tracking the best upsets in the same manner, measuring the winner’s Elo-predicted win probability against the most unlikely wins in that sport over time.

Without further ado, I give you the best professional player of 2018 in the NBA, NFL and MLB …

Best player of 2018

Mookie Betts, Boston Red Sox (fourth-best MLB season by wins above replacement since 2000)

In a year that featured a number of standout performances, none was better than that of Boston’s 26-year-old right fielder. Betts earned American League MVP honors by becoming just the fifth player of the 21st century to crack 10.0 WAR in a single season — and he was the rare player to outduel WAR machine Mike Trout for the top slot in the league. Add in Boston’s World Series victory (which Betts punctuated with a home run in the clinching contest), and Betts had himself a year for the ages in 2018.

NFL MVP favorite Patrick Mahomes was a very close second behind Betts, having produced one of the top individual skill-position seasons of the millennium while leading the Kansas City Chiefs’ explosive offense. (And he’s still going, of course.) Behind Mahomes is a mix of familiar names — Trout, LeBron James — and players whose award-winning 2018 performances propelled them into historic territory, such as Mets ace Jacob deGrom and Rockets star James Harden.

Mahomes’s season isn’t the only great individual campaign still unfolding. Saints QB Drew Brees has also produced MVP-type numbers, though they have flagged a bit since the end of November. And amid speculation about where he might play next, Anthony Davis currently leads the NBA in win shares and player efficiency rating, while ranking second in value over replacement player. Finally, despite Houston’s disappointing start, Harden has quietly been playing nearly as well as he did last season, leading the league in VORP.

Still, this is a case where the limits of our analysis — leagues for which we have Elo ratings — miss a lot. If you expand the search beyond the sports in which we track Elo, as ESPN’s Peter Keating did, American gymnast Simone Biles would give Betts a run for the No. 1 slot. In 2018, Biles won gold in every category at the U.S. championships, then fought off a kidney stone to win four more golds (plus a silver and a bronze) at the World Championships. Between Biles’s stellar performance and those of snowboarder Chloe Kim, WNBA star Breanna Stewart, top-ranked golfer Ariya Jutanugarn and swimmer (and FiveThirtyEight favorite) Katie Ledecky, we saw an outstanding crop of dominant female athletes this year.

Biggest upset of 2018

Baltimore Orioles 10, Boston Red Sox 3 — Sept. 26 (No. 1 upset in MLB since 2000)

It’s fitting that the top upset of the year featured our worst team of 2018, the Baltimore Orioles, beating the best, the Boston Red Sox. In baseball, most games are pretty close to a coin flip, with only the most extreme mismatches (usually aided by a disparate starting-pitching matchup) straying very far from 50-50. But in the second leg of a late-season double-header, the Red Sox sent staff ace Chris Sale to the hill against rookie Jimmy Yacabonis. Boston was looking for its 108th win of the season; Baltimore was looking to avoid loss No. 113. Going into the game, our pitcher-adjusted Elo model gave the O’s a mere 18.8 percent chance of winning. And yet, Baltimore hung seven runs on the Sox bullpen in the last three innings (including four on closer Craig Kimbrel) to break a 3-3 tie and seal the historic upset.

It was one of four upsets in 2018 that ranked among baseball’s 10 most improbable since 2000, helping MLB dominate the upset ranking below.2

Now, I know what you’re all thinking: The first 16-over-1 win in NCAA men’s tournament history isn’t the top upset of the year? Perhaps surprisingly, Maryland-Baltimore County’s stunner over Virginia — which had a 2.5 percent probability of happening, according to Elo — was only the sixth-biggest college basketball upset of the 2017-18 season alone. (In terms of raw upset odds, St. John’s knocking off Villanova was about 23 percent less likely.) But it’s still a fair point; there are a ton of random regular-season upsets every year, but far fewer come in the postseason. So here’s a version of the ranking above that looks solely at playoff upsets (excluding the College Football Playoff, which has existed only since 2014):

After making that change, we do see UMBC’s win rise to the top of the list as the most impressive postseason upset of the year. In fact, it was a pretty good year for underdogs all around, from the Philadelphia Eagles’ dog mask-fueled Super Bowl victory to the Vegas Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup Final run as an expansion team (and 200-1 title shot).

While the Warriors won again and baseball’s best got even better, there was still room in 2018 for plenty of surprises and inspiring performances. Here’s hoping 2019 brings fans even more moments to enjoy on the fields, courts, rinks and everywhere else our favorite games are played.
