a lil history lesson for @highnessaisling​ ( and @ anyone else who wants 2 know a bit more abt britain dkjgfkfgj ). a pre-warning, this got long so i’m v sorry! fellow brits pls @ me if i got anything wrong bc i studied this years ago and it’s highly possible i forgot smth!

ok so i just wanted to say that britain is actually the worst when it comes to this bc counties here are reorganised and created as areas have been abolished or whatever reason ( it’s rly confusing, i’m not abt to get into that dfkjfgkjngf ) but essentially, most british counties named after some sort of city or river that’s in them ( i.e. york is in yorkshire, lancaster is in lancashire ) and there are 48 counties, most of which have been around since anglo-saxon times, and a lot of them are the shires ( which if ur not from britain will probs confuse u a lot fjgnfkkgfj ). they were initially created for legal reason, taxes and military organisation, but then were used for local government reasons and elections. they can be split into four categories by name!

shires

in simple terms, shire comes from anglo-saxon times and is french for the word “county”, which is why most of the counties ( 19 of them to specific ) have the word “shire” as a suffix, which is just tagged onto the name of what the county is named after. if u want a list, the shires are bedfordshire, buckinghamshire, cambridgeshire, cheshire, derbyshire, gloucestershire, hampshire, herefordshire, hertfordshire, lancashire, leicestershire, lincolnshire, northamptonshire, nottinghamshire, oxfordshire, shropshire, staffordshire, warwickshire, worcestershire, and yorkshire ( east, west and north ridings, south ) ( that’s a lot of shires skdfgndsfg )

so these ones don’t end in shire which is probably where it’s gonna get confusing, which relate to the tribes that settled there. first we have essex, middlessex, and sussex ( east and west ), which were eastern, western, and southern areas where the saxons  settled. surrey means “southern district. there used to be a wessex but it cover a big part of southern england so it was broken up into different counties. then there’s norfolk and suffolk, which literally mean “north folk” and “south folk” ( we think we’re funny kjnkfjg ) which came out of the kingdom of east anglia. then there’s kent, which was an anglo-saxon jute kingdom deriving from the celtic british word for “border” ( cantus ). julius ceasar called it “cantium”, but now it’s just kent. last we have northumberland, which is a modern way of saying “kingdom of northumbria. historically, it used to be known as northtyneland.

these counties are named after the tribes that settled there. somerset and dorset are old english names meaning “people of somerton” and “people of dorchester”. devon derives from a celtic tribe call the dumnonii, which basically means “valley dwellers”. good ol’ cornwall gets the first part of it’s name from a local anglo-saxon tribe, the cornovii; “wall” comes from the old english word “weales”, which means “foreigners”. cumbria used to be cumberland, which has links to the welsh and comes from the celtic tribe, the crymry; cumberland meant “people from cumbria”. last we have rutland which is named after a guy named rota.

odd ones

west midlands are basically just the west midlands lmao. county durham is literally just taken from it’s county city durham. then there’s merseyside, tyne & wear ( icr where these came from ajsdndkjsf ) and the ones named after their cities; greater london, greater manchester, bristol. then there’s the isle of white, no explanation needed. it’s just that.

This survey was conducted in February and posted on two UK-centric subreddits as well as /r/samplesize. I believe based on post engagement this is mostly /r/casualuk responses. 670 responses were accepted, with most rejections being respondents who gave multiple locations. England was drawn on Ceremonial Counties (except the City of London which counted in Greater London), Wales on Preserved Counties which fulfill much the same purpose, Northern Ireland on the six historic counties, and Scotland on the 8 government regions which existed from 1975 to 1996 (Scottish counties typically have far too low a population to justify seperate recording in this survey). Responses were accepted from all areas bar Rutland, Gwynedd, County Down, Borders, Central Scotland, the Western Isles, Orkney, and Shetland. Scotland as a more urbanised country in which most people live in the central belt posed more problems in creating a thorough geographic spread.

Looking at the regional returns figures, it would seem that Scotland and Wales were represented roughly proportionate to population, Northern Ireland was slightly under represented. Generally speaking, London and the South East were under-represented while the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East were over represented. Some anomalies such as Dumfries and Galloway registering Mayonnaise are probably caused by small sample sizes, if I could do this scientifically (please give me funding, government, this is really important) then I would use a far wider sample to remove these discrepancies.

Observations include a distinct 'Gravy Belt' extending further than stereotypically imagined, curving into Mid/West Wales. I was a little surprised to see Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire be part of this, they are often said to be more Curry Sauce areas. Likewise, West Yorkshire, County Durham and Tyne and Wear would have been expected to be Gravy areas on this cultural assumption. Oxfordshire was an unlikely addition to the Mushy Peas belt, but we had enough responses to say this probably isn't an outlier. Cornwall's association with fish and chips by the sea as a coastal county with a large tourism sector probably explains their membership, while Nottinghamshire, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire were expected to generally be Mushy Peas areas in any case. Ketchup was broadly more popular in London and the Home Counties, with some popularity in the South West as well. Cheese did best in remote rural areas such as the Scottish Highlands.

A small country road in rural Lincolnshire bears the pastoral and scenic name of Tom Otter lane. Conjuring the farming scenes and agrian nostalgia found in the 18th century poems of John Clare, or William Wordsworth. The truth however to the naming of the stretch of country lane is far more gruesome and involves a murder, and execution and a family of birds. On the 22nd November 1804, in Eakring in Nottinghamshire twenty-eight-year-old Tom Otter married Martha Rawlinson, their first child being born a month later. Looking for work Tom crossed the border shortly after into Lincolnshire, leaving his wife and child. It is not known whether he intended to return or not, however his actions play out the fact that he may not have intended to. After a short period he seduced Mary Kirkham, while passing himself off as a widower using his mother's maiden last name of Temporal. Mary became pregnant, and the local authorities forced his marriage to the local girl, who was eight months pregnant. The marriage took place on the 5th November 1805, a little over the first year anniversary of his marriage to Martha. After their marriage they were seen in The Sun Inn at Saxilby, where on the road from Saxiby and Drinsey Nook, Mary’s body was discovered the next morning in a ditch; her skull was so badly battered that it had nearly been detached by the severity of the blows, by a club that was also found a short distance from the body. The British Wildlife Photography Awards exhibition at Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle in East Sussex never fails to surprise. Monty Python fans might remember glimpsing this  perfectly moated medieval marvel in the film Monty Python & the Holy Grail, where it was the exterior of Swamp Castle. Moving from films to stills, this pint-size castle is currently hosting the 2019 British Wildlife Photography Awards exhibition.

Bodiam Castle is of the first venues on the national tour of 2019 winners. The crenelated walls, soaring towers and surrounding moat provide a stunning backdrop to a spectacular series of photos that capture British wildlife and landscapes in all their power and  glory.

It was an overcast day when we visited, and the National Trust volunteers were getting up to speed with the diverse locations of the exhibition. This included the first floor of the West Tower which we understand was opened to the public for the first time especially for this exhibition. It was rather extraordinary climbing up the narrow, steeply spiralling stone stairs and stepping into a small circular tower room to see the most astonishing photographs of British wildlife.

The work of both amateur and professional photographers is displayed in the north east, north west and west towers. Somehow these rather magnificent photos of Britain’s bucolic landscape and abundant wildlife sit well against a backdrop of the castle’s ancient blocks of stone – story-tellers themselves across the centuries.

The details captured by the photographers were extraordinary. Daniel Trim’s Sinister Cargo shows a European Beewolf  – “tenacious little wasps” – carrying a paralysed honeybee to its burrow, where it will become the unwitting host for the wasp’s egg… and ultimately dinner for the newly hatched larva. And I just love the expression on Golden Boy, Kirsty Andrews' fine portrait of a blenny.

Highly commended, Breakfast Bug by Peter Bartholomew – a dipper tucks into a juicy bug in the Cairngorms.

There's food for thought too. For example Breakfast Bug,  Peter Bartholomew's photo of a dipper perched on a plastic bottle draped in what looks like fishing net, shows how nature adapts to its changing surroundings. "Over several weeks I observed that the dipper had adopted various pieces of plastic waste as perching spots in preference to the usual stones and branches."

We visited Bodiam Castle this time mainly for the exhibition. But of course Britain’s most photogenic castle provides multiple opportunities to shoot stunning photos, whether you use a camera or your phone. (The photos accompanying this article were all taken on a Huawei P20 Pro smartphone). So after visiting the exhibition rooms in the three towers, do climb further up the spiral stairs to the top of the towers to the reward of fantastic countryside views.

Enjoy a leisurely tour of Bodiam Castle

This inspiring BWPA exhibition is a reminder of the riches that nature gives us right on our doorsteps. Indeed the castle grounds are home to a variety of wildlife within its wetlands, wooded areas, trees, and grasslands. It is also one of the most important bat roosts in the south east of England.

Bodiam Castle is just 5 miles from the five-bedroom holiday rental Barnfield House, which is the perfect base for families interested in exploring the attractions of Kent and East Sussex.

The exhibition is on until Sunday 5 January 2020 (closed 24 & 25 December).

You wend your way across the meadow’s open expanse as the early sun casts its glow upon the toadstools and the tumbled leaves. The chill air catches at your throat as you breathe deep. Negativity disperses with the puther of each expelled breath.

For a time, you stop and sit beside the pond, allowing your thoughts to pool like the waters of the stream. A robin warbles from the concealment of tangled beaches. It’s song sounds melancholic, as if in remembrance of lost summer days, but still it continues to sing, undaunted by the months of cold that lie ahead.

You take your leave of the pooling waters as an icy wind begins to rise, and you follow the pathway through the trees. Branches bow in courteous arches over the trail, clad in fragile garb of green and gold. You bow your head in return, bidding farewell, knowing that you will return again soon.

I only made it out to the meadow, woodland and stream / pond on one occasion during November, and unfortunately I didn’t stay out for long – the wind was incredibly cold and it was forecasted to get much worse as the day went on. Which it did. I expect that the trees would have had far fewer leaves by the end of that day! I did manage to take a few pictures during the short time I was there, however.

The NIHR Clinical Research Network East Midlands (CRN EM) provides a world-class research infrastructure embedded in the NHS to support participation in NIHR Portfolio research studies across England. Gamelyn vs. Robin Hood

By A. E. Chandler The most famous English outlaw is Robin Hood, but he was by no means alone in the forest. Other outlaws, both fictional and real, can be traced throughout medieval England. Some of these outlaws influenced Robin Hood's legend, whilst others have faded from history. Gamelyn's story shares many similarities with Robin's; it's also its own kind of animal.

Gamelyn is the youngest son of a knight who bucks tradition and on his deathbed divides his land amongst his three sons, rather than giving all to the firstborn. Growing up as his eldest brother's ward, Gamelyn develops incredible physical strength, though he must stand by and watch as his lands go to waste. At last he gains control over his inheritance following an argument with his brother. Soon after, Gamelyn competes in and wins a wrestling match, inviting everyone at the fair to follow him home to celebrate at his brother's hall. When his brother bars the gate, Gamelyn is able to kick it in and break the defiant porter's neck with one blow, throwing the body down the courtyard well. The other servants, knowing Gamelyn to be a friend to themselves and his tenants, don't try to resist his wishes. The guests feast for seven days and nights, at the end of which Gamelyn's brother manages to chain him up in the hall. The brother holds a feast for some wealthy churchmen, all of whom refuse to help Gamelyn. Instead he is freed by a servant named Adam the Spencer, and the two beat everyone with staffs, breaking the brother's back and placing him in Gamelyn's chains. The sheriff gets involved and, after initially driving him off, Gamelyn and Adam flee to the woods where they meet the King of the Outlaws and his seven-score men. The brother heals, becoming the new sheriff. Gamelyn's lands are confiscated, and he becomes King of the Outlaws when the former man is pardoned. At the shire court, Gamelyn is imprisoned, but his middle brother Ote comes and bails him out. Gamelyn returns to the forest, stealing from passing churchmen. On the day of the assize, the eldest brother declares that Ote will hang, as Gamelyn has not fulfilled his court date. Gamelyn then makes a dramatic entrance, freeing Ote and placing the corrupt sheriff, justice, and jury on trial, hanging them all. The King pardons Ote, Gamelyn, and all the outlaws, making Gamelyn Chief Justice of the Forest. The historical note at the end of my novel, The Scarlet Forest: A Tale of Robin Hood, borrows from my academic research when it discusses why we can date the existence of Robin Hood's legend to the early to mid thirteenth century, whilst the first written stories we have of him come from the fifteenth century. Gamelyn's story was composed in the mid fourteenth century, in between Robin's origin and his first known extant written tales. From the dialect used, Knight and Ohlgren have speculated that Gamelyn's story was likely written in Leicestershire, or perhaps Lincolnshire, both of which are near Robin Hood's territory of Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and both of which have connections to Robin's legend. The Tale of Gamelyn is found in twenty-five early manuscripts, whereas four of the five medieval tales we have of Robin Hood survive in only one. (The fifth, A Gest of Robyn Hode, survives in five fragmented copies, and these are all printed, rather than handwritten. No handwritten copy of Gest is known to exist.) Gamelyn owes this larger number to a vague association with Geoffrey Chaucer, suspected by some of intending to include a version of Gamelyn in The Canterbury Tales. As a side note, William Shakespeare later wrote the play As You Like It based on Thomas Lodge's 1590 Rosalynde, which was in turn based on Gamelyn.

Some of the similarities between Gamelyn's story and Robin's are due to their shared genre of medieval outlaw literature, whilst some are due to one story influencing the other. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to tell which way the influence flowed, due to the scarcity of source material. One instance where we do know that it was Gamelyn's story affecting Robin's comes from the modern period. J. C. Holt, the leading expert on Robin Hood, has argued that Gamelyn is the inspiration for the character of Gamwell, who was added to early modern rhymes of Robin Hood. Gamwell merged with Will Scarlet, creating a relative of Robin's who is on the run from the law after killing his father's disrespectful steward with an overzealous blow to the head. The medieval Gamelyn's vaunted strength, and the emphasis placed on his high-born familial ties seem to have been incorporated into Robin Hood's legend in the person of Will Gamwell. The early modern Robin Hood is closer to Gamelyn than the medieval Robin Hood, though whether this is due to direct influence by Gamelyn is up for debate. As Maurice Keen notes, Gamelyn is loved by the lower classes in his Tale - his tenants, servants, the spectators at the fair, the outlaws - and he in turn consistently earns this love. The medieval Robin Hood is more nuanced; when it comes to the lower classes he has allies, such as the uncle of Much the Miller's son, as well as opponents (such as the potter, and fellow-outlaw Guy of Gisborne). In Gest when the people of Nottingham see Robin leading his band toward the city they try to flee, even old women on crutches, convinced they will all be massacred. The more universal love from the peasantry that Robin experiences in post-medieval tales comes after the idea of robbing the rich to feed the poor was introduced to his legend in the sixteenth century. The sixteenth century also saw Robin elevated to become the Earl of Huntingdon, which inevitably made him a landlord, like Gamelyn, with an automatic obligation of good lordship toward his peasants. The medieval Robin Hood is not a nobleman but himself a peasant, though anyone calling him that likely would receive a punch in the face, as he is a type of high-ranking peasant called a yeoman, and takes every opportunity to remind his audience of his status. The medieval Robin is fiercely proud to be a yeoman, and is just as disinclined toward raising his social status as he is toward lowering it. Gamelyn is constantly struggling to affirm his status, whereas Robin's is always secure. As the son of a knight and as a landlord, Gamelyn's station is much above the medieval Robin's, and so the social issues dealt with in his tale are different.

Gamelyn and the medieval Robin Hood legend do, however, share much in common. One example lies in both Robin and Gamelyn rebelling against corruption, to fight for the preservation of the established social order. Gamelyn hits its audience (and not infrequently its characters) over the head with this theme, whilst in Robin's tales it is used with greater skill. Gamelyn and his eldest brother are stuffed into the roles of outlaw king and sheriff respectively halfway through their story. At its climax, Gamelyn turns the officials of justice into the defendants at their own biased trial, convicting and hanging them as they had already intended to do to him. Robin Hood behaves like a corrupt forester, overzealously enforcing forest law where it should not exist. At the same time, he shows himself to be "the criminal who upholds justice better than the Sheriff . . . the robber who can be more generous than the gentry . . . the excommunicant who shows more devotion than the clergy . . . preserv[ing] what they claim to love by being [his] own hypocrite" as his wife tells him in The Scarlet Forest: A Tale of Robin Hood. In a similar vein, when Gamelyn is faced with cold-hearted clergymen, he simply attacks them at the first opportunity; the medieval Robin Hood is known to rob monks, but he is also extremely devout, especially with regard to the Virgin Mary, and is often shown praying and attending mass. He even (with disastrous results as it turns out) entrusts his life to a nun. Whilst Gamelyn's character is simplistic, the medieval Robin Hood's is more complex. Perhaps this is why The Tale of Gamelyn is concluded to be fictional, whilst the truth about Robin's tales is still up for debate.
