Simple Joys
An 'It's Who We Have' Oneshot
Tumblr media
Summary: after a few months, Billy ventures outside of London to feel somewhat normal, and brings her along for the ride | Word Count: 2k~ | Warnings: just fluffy
A/N: my boyf took me to goose fair to cheer me up and I couldn't help but think of my favourite pair 😭
When she thought of her life in London, the first word that came to mind was busy. Always busy. Rubbing shoulders with people everywhere you go, fighting for your life running around tourists and least of all the incessant beeps of rowdy taxis and weaving out the way of electric bikes.
So the first thing she thought when Billy said he wanted to take her up to Nottingham one cold October evening, she thought it might be the same.
And yes, while there was a certain hustle and bustle about the place, it was like a breath of fresh air. Billy had been uncharacteristically quiet since they left London, a small, secretive smile on his lips as he glanced around the familiar city centre.
With their hands linked, fingers intertwined, she caught him looking at her, his eyes twinkling with amusement. His hair pushed slightly to his forehead from the hat he was wearing to cover his ears from the chill. Equally, she was grateful for the thick scarf around her neck. The midlands was bitterly cold.
“What you looking so happy about, eh?”
Billy shrugged, his arm moving to casually drape over her shoulders. “Just excited to show you a bit of my world. You’re always dragging me to your fancy London spots, figured it’s my turn now.”
He leaned in close, his lips brushing her ear. “You ever heard of the Goose Fair?”
She furrowed her brows at him, half amused, “assuming there are no geese involved?”
Billy chuckled, his breath warm against her ear. "Not a single one, surprisingly," he said with a smirk. "Over 700 years, and not a goose in sight. But I promise, it’s a hell of a lot more fun than it sounds. Rides, games, all the dodgy fair food you can handle."
She grinned, shaking her head. "You really know how to sell it, Billy."
He walked in front of her, the Council House coming into view behind him as he walked backwards. He seemed so aloof that she couldn't help that warm fluttery feeling in her stomach. “Proper day out with the locals.”
She found herself smiling, excited not just for the fair, but for the chance to see this side of Billy, the carefree, playful part of him that rarely had a chance to surface.
As they approached the Goose Fair, the air thickened with the scents of sugary doughnuts, frying onions, and the rich aroma of caramelised popcorn. The sound of distant screams from the towering rides mixed with the low hum of chatter from families, couples, and groups of friends wandering the packed fairgrounds. Bright lights blinked from every direction, illuminating the sprawling rides, food stalls, and game booths, all surrounded by the hustle and bustle of one of the oldest fairs in the country.
Billy’s hand found hers, squeezing it gently as he pulled her through the crowds, using his body as a sort of meat shield.
“First things first,” he beamed, his tone playful, “you’ve got to try the mushy peas.”
“I’m fairly certain I’ve tried mushy peas, Billy,” she laughed, raising an eyebrow. But she didn’t protest as Billy led her toward a food stall, handing over a few coins in exchange for a steaming polystyrene cup, thankful then for her thick gloves.
"You’ve got to have mushy peas," Billy said, holding out a forkful with a grin. "It’s a Goose Fair tradition."
She eyed the peas suspiciously, then sighed and took the bite, trusting his enthusiasm. As the taste hit her, her eyes widened in surprise, and she froze mid-chew. “It’s minty?!”
Billy burst out laughing at her reaction, barely holding the fork steady. “You should see your face.”
She shook her head, still processing, blinking at him with amusement. “I was not prepared for that at all.”
"Hey," Billy said, feigning offence, "this is fine dining where I’m from. Just wait until I get you on one of the rides after all this. You'll be thanking me when you’re dizzy and full of carbs.”
She laughed it off at the time, but Billy was not joking. And as they stepped up to the dodgems, she realised she might’ve underestimated him.
The ride roared to life, and within seconds, Billy’s eyes gleamed with the mischievous focus of a man on a mission. He gripped the wheel, glancing at her with a wicked grin. "Hold on tight," he warned, just as they lurched forward.
She barely had time to register what was happening before Billy veered sharply, locking his sights on a pair of unsuspecting kids in a bright red car. He slammed their car from the side with a cackle, sending them spinning. “Got 'em!” he shouted triumphantly.
“Billy!” she gasped, wide-eyed and laughing at the same time. “You’re going after children!”
He only smirked in response, dodging another car and steering straight for a teenager who had been too cocky behind the wheel. “No mercy,” he muttered, tapping the accelerator.
She gripped the side of the car, laughing through her protests. “I thought you’d be... I don’t know, charmingly bad at this or something.”
It was so so nice to see Billy happy. Carefree. No furrowed brow or distant gaze, no shadow of the weight they'd been carrying for so long. Just him, fully in the moment, grinning like a kid between lovesick glances. For so long, they had been in survival mode. From that horrific day at Cranstead Fields to the fallout that followed, every step had been a fight to just stay afloat. But today… today, it felt like they were finally catching their breath.
It was strange to think it had only been that July it happened. It felt like a lifetime between then and now. She couldn’t help but smile as she watched him laugh, a thick swallow of emotion easing her shoulders, his whole body relaxed in a way that had been rare to see. He was healing. They were healing.
Her heart swelled at the sound of it, his laugh, unguarded and free.
It was here, she thought with amusement, that he had a competitive streak, something rarely seen in any of his interactions back in London. And she saw the twinkle in his eyes reignite as they stopped by a ring-toss game booth. “Right,” he said, rolling up his sleeves, “time to win you something.”
She shot him a sceptical look, arms crossed. “Billy, these games are rigged.”
He smirked, grabbing a ring with a confident twirl. “Maybe for the average bloke,” he said, winking at her.
His confidence was admirable, and the first few attempts were predictably off-target, much to her amusement. But Billy, determined not to be outdone, narrowed his eyes and focused, launching the final ring with precision. It sailed through the air and landed perfectly on the peg, causing the stall worker to give a resigned, tight-lipped smile.
“All right, mate,” the worker said, handing Billy a tiny plush toy shaped as a goose. “She’s yours.”
Billy turned to her, a wide grin spreading across his face as he held out the stuffed goose. “Told you I’d win something.”
As the night wound down, they found themselves standing in front of a massive ride, The Stargazer, a swinging chair ride that took riders high up into the sky, offering a breathtaking view of the fair and the city beyond.
“Up for one more ride before we call it a night?” he asked, already knowing her answer.
They strapped in a loveseat, and soon, the ride lifted them high into the cool evening sky. As they soared through the air, the fair spread out beneath them like a sea of twinkling lights, the city glowing softly in the distance. For a moment, it was just the two of them, floating above it all, the wind whipping through their hair.
Billy looked over at her as his hand slid around her waist, his heart swelling with something that felt both terrifying and exhilarating. The glow of the lights reflected in her eyes, and for a moment, everything else disappeared, the past, the chaos, the danger. It was just her, the night, and this feeling.
“I’m glad we came,” he said softly, his voice almost lost in the wind. “It’s nice, having something… normal.”
She smiled, leaning into him, her head resting on his shoulder. “Yeah, it is. We deserve this.”
He let the words settle between them, a quiet acknowledgment of everything they’d been through. Now, here they were, sharing something simple, something normal, like a ride under the stars. And somehow, that made it feel even more precious.
Billy pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head. “We do.”
They were drunk on the night, on each other, intoxicated by the simple joy of being together, of having survived so much and still finding this lightness in the world.
“I can’t believe you took me to a fair,” she murmured, glancing up at him with a soft smile. “It feels like a dream. And you! Driving like a maniac on the dodgems?”
Billy chuckled, his grip around her tightening as he kissed the top of her head. “Hmm…impressed though?”
She laughed, shaking her head. “Yes, baby, consider me thoroughly impressed.”
The path they walked together slowly became quieter, pulling them into a quieter, more suburban part of town, where they'd be staying with Billy's Aunty and Uncle for the weekend.
“You think your Auntie Jean will still be awake?” she asked, stifling a yawn as they approached the house.
Billy grinned. “Oh, she’ll be waiting up. Probably with tea and biscuits, knowing her.”
Sure enough, as they approached the front door, a soft light flickered in the window, and the smell of something sweet drifted out from the house. For a short moment he refrained from knocking on the front door, and simply held her beneath the dim glow of the porch light.
With a quiet exhale, Billy reached out, his fingers brushing against her cheek, cold from the night but warming under his touch. Her breath hitched slightly as his thumb traced along her jawline, and she felt the warmth bloom in her chest, the kind that only he could stir.
It reminded her of the time he'd kissed her in Cranstead Fields that summery evening. Except this time, she doubted he tasted like WKD.
He gently tucked a strand of windblown hair behind her ear, his hand lingering as his thumb grazed her skin. Her cheeks tingled, not from the cold, but from the tenderness in his touch, the quiet love that had been growing between them for so long.
“You’re beautiful, you know that?” Billy’s voice was low, barely above a whisper, but the sincerity in his words hit her like a wave.
She felt her heart skip as she met his gaze, her hand sliding up to rest against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her fingertips. How alive he felt. “Only when you look at me like that.”
Billy’s smile widened, and without a word, he leaned in, pressing his forehead gently to hers, their noses brushing. His breath mingled with hers, and for a moment, they stood there, wrapped in their quiet intimacy.
“I’m so lucky,” he whispered, his lips brushing hers as he spoke, the words carrying a weight that made her heart swell.
And then, softly, tenderly, he kissed her. It wasn’t rushed or urgent, but slow and full of all the hardship they’d carried through every moment, every challenge. It was a kiss that promised something real, something lasting.
When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads still resting together, both of them breathing softly, she smiled, her eyes sparkling with quiet joy.
“Let’s go inside. Get warm,” she whispered, though neither of them seemed in any rush.
Billy grinned, his thumb tracing her cheek one last time before he reached for the door. "Yeah," he said softly, still holding her close. “After you, baby.”
The warmth hit their bones instantly, and even past the incessant questions from Auntie Jean between offers of cups of tea and something to nibble on, she and Billy would meet eyes across the room, and it would still manage to make her blush the way he looked at her.
There was no need for words. This kind of love, friendship, everything, had no need for declarations. Just the simple, undeniable truth that they were meant to be here, together.

[In February, 2023], a small warehouse in the English city of Nottingham received the crucial final components for a project that leverages the power of used EV batteries to create a new kind of circular economy.
Inside, city authorities have installed 40 two-way electric vehicle chargers that are connected to solar panels and a pioneering battery energy storage system, which will together power a number of on-site facilities and a fleet of 200 municipal vehicles while simultaneously helping to decarbonize the UK’s electrical grid.
Each day Nottingham will send a combination of solar-generated energy — and whatever is left in the vehicles after the day’s use — from its storage devices into the national grid.  The so-called “vehicle to grid” chargers deliver this energy just when it’s needed most, during peak evening demand, when people are home cooking, using hot water or watching TV. Later, the same chargers pull energy from the grid to recharge the vehicles in the wee hours of the night, when folks are sleeping and electricity is cheaper and plentiful.
“We are trying to create a virtual power station,” says Steve Cornes, Nottingham City Council’s Technical Lead. “The solar power and battery storage will help us operate independently and outside of peak times, making our system more resilient and reducing stress on the national grid. We could even make a profit.” ...
After around a decade, an EV battery no longer provides sufficient performance for car journeys. However, they still can retain up to 80 percent of their original capacity, and with this great remaining power comes great reusability.
“As the batteries degrade, they lose their usefulness for vehicles,” says Matthew Lumsden, chairman of Connected Energy. “But batteries can be used for so many other things, and to not do so results in waste and more mining of natural resources.”
The E-STOR hubs come in the form of 20-foot modular containers, each one packed with 24 repurposed EV batteries from Renault cars. Each hub can provide up to 300kW of power, enough to provide energy to dozens of homes. One study by Lancaster University, commissioned by Connected Energy, calculated that a second life battery system saved 450 tons of CO2 per MWh over its lifetime...
Battery repurposing and recycling is set to play a massive role over the coming years as the automobile industry attempts to decarbonize and the world more broadly attempts to fight waste. The production of EVs, which use lithium-ion batteries, is accelerating. Tesla, for example, is aiming to sell 20 million EVs per year by 2030 — more than 13 times the current level. In turn, 12 million tons of EV batteries could become available for reuse by 2030, according to one estimate.
“Over the next decade we are going to see this gigantic wave,” says Jessica Dunn, a senior analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists. “Companies are recognizing this is a necessary industry. They need to ramp up infrastructure for recycling and reuse.”

The Hound of the Baskervilles: Three Broken Threads
Hat tip to @myemuisemo for another excellent post that covers much of what I was planning together:
Data protection was not really a thing back in 1889. However, paper hotel registers would be something filled in by the front desk staff, not the guest. They would contain details of extra charges incurred as well, all stuff generally done by computer, but you can still buy paper copies today. Particularly for the Indian market, where less than half the population have Internet access. These registers are generally mandatory and in some countries, the data will still be passed to the police when it concerns newly arrived foreigners. That's why they ask for your passport.
Newcastle upon Tyne, the one people generally talk about as opposed to Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, was at the centre of a major coal mining area in North-East England, the Durham and Northumberland coalfields being in close proximity. The industry was still employing children - boys as young as 12 could work in mines - and was still a pretty dangerous, not to mention unhealthy industry.
The British economy was heavily reliant on coal, especially the newly built electric power stations. While the railways had a big coal trade for internal transport for domestic purposes, boats also played a big role, either going via canal or down the East Coast of Great Britain to the London Docks. This route would become vulnerable to German attack in the World Wars, particularly in the second war from fast torpedo boats known to the British as "E-boats"; the East Coast convoys are a lesser-known part of the naval war, with Patrick Troughton having served with Coastal Force Command.
The Mayor of Gloucester, like most civic mayors in England, is the chair of the council, elected to a one-year term by their fellow councillors. The current holder is Conservative councillor Lorraine Campbell. It's a mostly ceremonial role involving going to various events while wearing a red cloak and a big hat:
Gloucester's Deputy Mayor is called the Sheriff of Gloucester. There is still a Sheriff of Nottingham, by the way.
The Anglophone Canadian accent was historically noticeably different to an American one and of course had its own varieties. They've gotten closer over the decades, especially due to television.
Sir Henry would have limited luggage space on the ship over, so three pairs of boots would be reasonable. He'd have to ship over anything else at further cost, so it could be cheaper to buy new in London.
Deliveries of telegrams that weren't in the immediate area of the office cost extra. Bradshaw's Guide for Tourists in Great Britain and Ireland would state the nearest telegraph office for a town, as the 1866 edition demonstrates:
Sir Charles' estate was worth around £80m in today's money, but that would not even get him onto The Sunday Times Rich List, which starts at £350m (Sir Lewis Hamilton, i.e. the F1 driver). It tops out with Gopichand Hinduja and his family at an estimated £37.2 billion, whose conglomerate is many focussed on India, but also are the biggest shareholders in US chemical company Quaker Houghton.
Westmoreland was a historical county in Northern England; it was absorbed into Cumbria in 1974, but its area became part of the Westmoreland and Furness unitary authority in 2023.
"Entailed" means that Sir Charles has stipulated in a legal document that the Baskerville estate would have to pass to Sir Henry's heir intact. This was a feudal era practice that has now been abolished in most jurisdictions, with limited remaining use in England and Wales. Simply put Sir Henry is not allowed to sell the house or the land, even part of it. He can do what he likes with the cash and probably the chattels, the movable property like the candlesticks and the toasting forks.
This page covers it in relation to the works of Jane Austen with relevant spoilers:
Borough is another name for the area of Southwark. It got a Tube station in 1890, when the City and South London Railway opened, now the Bank branch of the Northern line. It also is famous for Borough Market, then a wholesale food market under cover of buildings from the 1850s. Today it is a retail market for specialty food; kind of like a farmers' market.
In 1888, the 10:30 from Paddington would get to Exeter at 15:35, a journey of five hours. @myemuisemo provides route maps. I would add at this point, GWR services to SW England went via Bristol, adding a lot of time to the journey, while the LSWR route from Waterloo was a lot more direct. Wags dubbed the former "the Great Way Round". The construction of two cut-off lines allowed the GWR to go via Westbury and Castle Cary.
I will cover the modern day condition of the route in my Chapter 6 post.
The GWR still had some broad-gauge track at 2,140 mm(7 ft 1⁄4 in) left that Brunel had favoured, but this would be finally eliminated in 1892.
Finally, Holmes is referencing the sport of fencing when he learns the cabbie has been given his name. The foil is the lightest of the three swords used in competitive fencing, such as the Olympics.
In an age before electronic fencing equipment, point scoring relied on the eyesight of the umpire... and the honesty of the competitions.
I was in my fencing club at university. I can't say I was that great. I preferred the epee, which doesn't have the priority rules...

Electric (Overhead Pickup) Trolleybus
A trolleybus (also known as trolley bus, trolley coach, trackless trolley, trackless tram Introduced in the 1920's is an electric bus that draws power from dual overhead wires (generally suspended from roadside posts) using spring-loaded trolley poles. Two wires, and two trolley poles, are required to complete the electrical circuit. This differs from a tram or streetcar, which normally uses the track as the return path, needing only one wire and one pole (or pantograph). They are also distinct from other kinds of electric buses, which usually rely on batteries. Power is most commonly supplied as 600-volt direct current, but there are exceptions.
Currently, around 300 trolleybus systems are in operation, in cities and towns in 43 countries. Altogether, more than 800 trolleybus systems have existed, but not more than about 400 concurrently. There are no longer any public Trolleybus services operating in the UK. Those that are running are in preserved Transport museum sites.
This image shown is of a preserved Trolleybus as operated by Nottingham City council now running in a transport museum.

EE adds over 400 new small cells to increase 4G capacity and reduce congestion in the busiest areas
Tumblr media
EE has now successfully deployed over 600 street-level mobile sites, known as small cells, across the UK, delivering on its commitment to add hundreds of new sites to the 200 announced just over one year ago. A further 411 small cell installations are now delivering enhanced capacity in high demand areas, including in major cities such as Birmingham, Brighton and Sheffield, ensuring customers can take advantage of download speeds of up to 300Mbps even at the busiest of times. Other new locations to benefit from EE’s ongoing small cells deployment include the cities of Swansea, Leicester, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Southampton and York. Meanwhile a host of seasonal hotspots have also received a timely connectivity boost ahead of the Summer, including Newquay, Paignton, Salcombe, Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea. Small cells take advantage of existing street assets, such as BT’s iconic red telephone boxes, to help enhance street-level mobile coverage in busy areas where it’s impractical to build larger sites, such as city-centres and transport hubs. As well as being located on phone boxes, lamp posts and CCTV columns, EE has installed approximately 60 small cells on BT’s innovative new digital Street Hubs, further maximising the benefit of these assets to communities. EE’s 611 small cell sites currently carry 20TB of data traffic every day – the equivalent of streaming 8,000 hours of HD video or 280,000 hours of music – demonstrating the substantial value they offer to customers in high demand areas, as well as the importance of EE’s strategy to build prior to the arrival of any congestion whenever possible. Sites are identified via advanced network analytics, which highlights specific locations that would most benefit from the performance boost enabled by a small cell. Then, working alongside Nokia, EE deploys a 4G small cell solution which couples its licenced 1800MHz and 2600Mhz spectrum with unlicenced 5GHz spectrum to deliver standout speed and capacity.
Tumblr media
James Hope, Director of Mobile Radio Access Networks, EE: “As demand for data continues to rise, small cells are becoming an increasingly integral part of our mobile network. Our partnership with Nokia ensures customers continue to benefit from our fastest 4G speeds even at the busiest times and in the most congested of locations, and we’re proud to pass another milestone in this project as we continue to invest in improving the UK’s best mobile network* up and down the country.” Mark Atkinson, SVP, Radio Access Networks PLM at Nokia: “Nokia has an extensive portfolio of high-capacity outdoor and indoor small cells that deliver premium 4G and 5G network performance in dense urban and in-building environments. This latest deployment will ensure that EE’s customers benefit from seamless connectivity particularly in congested or high-demand areas at multiple cities across the UK. We are delighted to continue our partnership with EE and support their ambition to deliver the country’s best network.” EE’s continued network investment will see hundreds more small cells deployed in the coming months, both in existing and new towns and cities. EE is also trialling the extension of small cells to accommodate its 5G network, with Nokia’s AirScale portfolio able to seamlessly upgrade to 5G. Last year, EE announced its first such small cell deployments, which brought additional 4G capacity to cities including Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Nottingham and Scarborough. In Newcastle, EE has worked with the City Council to deploy over 20 small cells so far, making use of existing street furniture to boost capacity in busy locations including the city centre, Newcastle University, and in proximity to St James’ Park stadium. Cllr Alex Hay, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for a Resilient City: “We’re really pleased to be working with EE to improve infrastructure and increase digital connectivity across the city. Matchdays see more than 50,000 people concentrated in a small area, and anyone who has attended football matches and other large events will know it can be difficult to obtain a mobile signal in those environments. By enabling the use of our assets for EE to deploy small cells, we’re boosting connectivity and giving residents and visitors alike an improved experience in our city. We’re proud of our reputation as a leading smart, modern city and are always willing to work with others to further develop local infrastructure.” *Rankings based on RootMetrics® UK and metro RootScore® reports: H2 2022. Tested with best commercially available smartphones on 4 national mobile networks across all available network types. Your experiences may vary. The RootMetrics® award is not an endorsement of EE. Reports at RootMetrics.co.uk. Visit ee.co.uk/claims for more details. Read the full article

Assistance and Prospects for International Students in the UK.
Tumblr media
The following are the assisting schemes offered to international students in the UK to improve their academic and social experience. An advanced program, ‘the GREAT Scholarships’ is run by the British Council for specified countries where successful applicants are fully sponsored, their tuition fees catered for besides being given an allowance to cater for other expenses in the United Kingdom. First-class universities like the University of Nottingham and the University of Manchester also make their efforts by providing certain preferential scholarships for overseas students, Some of the grants would finance half of the tuition fees. Furthermore, numerous UK universities offer specific fee discounts tailored for international learners.
The Chevening Scholarship which is a prestigious scholarship programme funded by the Government of the United Kingdom to support foreign students’ education, is the best one for funding as awardees receive full tuition fees to attend the university of their wish, a living stipend and return airfare to the United Kingdom. Similarly, the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan offers students from Commonwealth countries, large financial support such as fees, living allowance, and research grants. In conclusion, the UK is not only open to international talent but also increases future value for such talents.
Beyond financial support, international students in the UK can take advantage of various unique opportunities to earn, save, and grow. Many universities offer International Student Ambassador Programs, which enable students to earn money while representing their institutions—a role that combines professional experience with community engagement. For top performers, the British Council’s IELTS scholarship competitions provide not only substantial financial rewards but also valuable professional development experiences.
Transportation discounts also help ease expenses. There is plenty that students can take advantage of when it comes to travelling by train The 16-25 Railcard, for example, is valid to full-time international students and entitles the holder to a one-third reduction on most rail fares throughout the UK. Furthermore, London, Manchester, Edinburgh and other cities offer special travel cards for international students to allow cheap transport means when moving around.
Culturally, integration programs create opportunities for both personal and professional growth. Organizations such as UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) host networking events, cultural exchange programs, and skill-building workshops specifically for international students. These activities promote meaningful connections, enhance cultural understanding, and pave the way for potential career opportunities, resulting in a rich and dynamic experience for students adjusting to life in the UK.

Where to Find Certified E-Waste Recycling Centers for Your MacBook in the UK?
Finding certified e-waste recycling centers for a MacBook in the UK is essential to ensure that your device is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Certified recycling centers follow strict guidelines for handling electronic waste, preventing harmful chemicals from entering the environment and promoting sustainable resource recovery.
Here's a detailed guide on where to find certified e-waste recycling centers for your MacBook in the UK, covering how to identify certified recyclers, key locations, and alternatives if no center is nearby.
1.   Why Use a Certified E-Waste Recycling Center?
Tumblr media
When e-waste is not properly handled, it can release toxic substances, including heavy metals like mercury and lead, into the environment. Certified recycling centers in the UK ensure:
Data security through proper data destruction measures.
Compliance with environmental standards under UK regulations and guidelines from WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive.
Resource recovery by reclaiming valuable materials like copper, gold, and aluminum.
2. How to Identify a Certified E-Waste Recycling Center?
To ensure your MacBook is recycled responsibly, look for centers that are certified under schemes such as:
ADISA (Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance) – ensuring data security and environmental standards.
Environment Agency Certification – in line with UK environmental laws.
WEEE Compliance – which ensures they meet requirements for handling electronic waste in the EU.
Most certified e-waste recyclers in the UK will display their certifications on their website or be listed on official WEEE compliance lists.

5. Preparing Your MacBook for Recycling
Tumblr media
Before taking your MacBook to a recycling center:
Backup Data: Use Time Machine or iCloud to back up important files.
Erase Data: Factory reset the MacBook by following Apple’s instructions to securely erase all data.
Remove Accessories: Remove any cases, stickers, or accessories that may interfere with recycling.
6. Additional Tips
Check for Incentives: Some companies offer incentives, such as store credit or discounts on future purchases, for recycling your MacBook.
Verify Certifications: If in doubt, ask the recycling center for proof of certification or check their standing with organisations like ADISA or the Environment Agency.
Conclusion
Recycling your MacBook at a certified e-waste center is a responsible way to contribute to environmental sustainability in the UK. With numerous certified locations and convenient options, from drop-off centers to doorstep collections, you can find a solution that fits your needs. Crowd Scene . 11 November 2024 . Victoria Station WWI . Bernard Meninsky .1916
Meninsky, Bernard (1891-1950) - 1918 Victoria Station, District Railway Oil on canvas; 76.5 x 50.8 cm.
Bernard Meninsky (25 July 1891 – 12 February 1950) was a figurative artist, painter of figures and landscape in oils, watercolour and gouache, draughtsman and teacher.
He was born in Karotopin now in the Ukraine but raised in Liverpool where he attended the Liverpool School of Art in 1906 after initially attending evening classes in art. He won the King’s Medal in 1911 and went on to study briefly at Royal College of Art in London and the Académie Julian in Paris. After being awarded a scholarship he was able to enter the Slade School of Fine Art in 1912-13. In 1913 he worked for Edward Gordon Craig at his theatre school in Florence, later returning to teach at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
According to Lisa Tickner, the family name was Menushkin, ‘but it was unceremoniously entered as ‘Menisky’ by an English customs officer, whilst Meninsky himself added the second ‘n.’’ See: Tickner, Lisa. Modern Life and Modern Subjects: British Art in the Early Twentieth Century. New Haven; London: Yale University Press, 2000, p 288 (note 77).
During the first world war he joined the Royal Fusiliers, fighting with General Edmund Allenby in Palestine. He was naturalised a British Citizen in 1918 but had a nervous breakdown and was discharged from service after six months as a Ministry of Information war artist.
In 1920 he was appointed as a tutor of life drawing at the Westminster School of Art, where he was renowned as a superb figure draughtsman. In this period he was also associated with the Bohemian Bloomsbury Group and the Garman sisters. In 1940 he moved to Oxford City School of Art, and returned to the Central School in 1945.
Bernard Meninsky held his first solo show at Goupil Gallery in 1919 along with The London Group and the New English Art Club (NEAC). He published Mother and Child: 28 Drawings in 1928 and illustrated the 1946 volume of Milton's poems L'Allegro and Il Penseroso. In 1935 he designed sets for the ballet 'David' for the Markova-Dolin Company.
Meninsky suffered from mental illness for much of his life and committed suicide in 1950.
A Meninsky memorial exhibition was organised by the Arts Council in 1951-52, and a retrospective show was staged at the Adams Gallery in 1958.
His works are on show at the Arts Council, British Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Gallery of Ireland, Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, and galleries in Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield.
