I need your help...
If you don't know me, hello, I'm Accalia, I go by Tali Sidekick online on Youtube, Instagram, and on the rarest of occasions Twitch. I'm a 29 year old transgender woman from Canada, who came out and began socially and medically transitioning in 2021. I stream largely on Youtube and on the rare occasion I make videos (it's been over a year since I last did that).
I could use your help affording my legal name change. I've been trying to afford it myself but I'm unable to for reasons I'll get into below. The link is in my blog description, but I'll post it here:
Recently, while walking home from work (I don't make enough to afford public transit or my own vehicle or a bicycle) I got attacked by a middle-aged man in a dimly lit residential neighbourhood. I got away, and thankfully I didn't give him enough time to do more than grab me by the arm. However, I had to file a police report, which gave me two options: use my legal name which at current is my deadname (ie. a name I no longer wish to use) which would be distressing to say the least, or submit it anonymously. I chose the latter which unfortunately does little besides let the public know that someone dangerous with a vague description is in their area. I wish I could have put my name on that report but using my legal name as it stands now is ... I can't.
To add to this, I was saving up, but unfortunately the student loans I owe decided to charge me during an appeal process (they weren't supposed to) and when the charge partially bounced they denied my appeal (which isn't supposed to happen under the contract agreement I signed) because of "outstanding payments". The appeal process also only looked at my gross income for one month, specifically the month I got paid 3 times in (it happens only once a year) and decided to combine all three payments into an equal 2 and evaluated my paycheck at around 25/hr when I only make 16/hr and has thus denied me reduced loans payment (I'm working on this but it's adding to my stress). So at current, the $300 I had extra got eaten by the National Student Loans Services Centre (NSLSC) again and from previous experience even though I should be reimbursed once this is cleared up, I won't be.
I would have also had more (remember that extra third paycheck?) but my health insurance stopped covering me because despite being signed up to a provincial pharmacy program they decided I wasn't, and forced me to buy my hormones and ADHD meds out of pocket. They only -just- reinstated coverage, but getting reimbursed will take over a month possibly 2.
As such, I have exactly $48 in savings and $7 in my basic checking account.
I want to get my name changed, I've been trying for over 2 years, and it's been impossible. Every time I have the money to spare, the NSLSC eats it and doesn't give it back, some medical thing comes up, or some unforseen cost rears its head and consumes my meager savings. The cost averages out to about $450 because it requires Finger Printing for a background check, Notary Fees, Processing Fees, and Reprinting Fees for my Birth Certificate, Drivers License, and Marriage License.
And if the $450 goal is exceeded, any excess getsput towards affording the $6000 surgery cost of getting SRS/GRS (Sex Reassignment Surgery/Gender Reassignment Surgery). I have until December next year before my government will no longer cover the cost of the surgery supposedly.
If I can get help here, I really want all my legal doccuments to read "Llorelei Accalia [Lastname]". I'm so tired of having to explain to people that I'm transgender because the name, face, and (somehow) voice don't match.
Currently at:
$50/$450

How To Legally Transition in British Columbia, Canada
A while ago I said I would make a guide on this so here. Every other guide I found was either outdated for specific to another province so here is an updated one. Mainly writing this for my trans BC friends but anyone can use it. To those who aren’t from BC you can also use this as sort of what to expect if you choose to legally transition as it may be similar in other places. Important: You need to be 19 years old to change your legal name and gender marker in BC without parental permission. Things you will need: - Your original birth certificate. - Two pieces of government issued photo ID. - If you’re from outside Canada, resident or citizenship cards. - If you’re married, marriage certificates. - Photocopy of your receipt for criminal record checks. - A notaries person to also sign your application. Cost: Expect to pay at least $440, that’s how much I spent in total and includes the costs of updating IDs (including passport). Step-By-Step: 1: Criminal Record Check The province of BC requires all applicants to get digitally fingerprinted during the process. This can be done at any RCMP station, no appointment necessary. If you don’t want to be around police then you can find an accredited agency in your area instead, however they may be more costly. Mine costed $55 and it was done by the police. If they ask you why just say you are trans and don’t elaborate further as your response will be recorded if done by police. Once that’s done, ask for a photocopy of your receipt, that’s what you need to send to the government. You will need two pieces of government issued photo ID for this. I used my BCID and Passport as I don’t have a driver’s license.
2: Name Change Application Once you have the receipt you need to send it within 30 days. You can find the applications on the BC Government’s website. If you’re over 19, not married, born in Canada and have no kids then you can apply online here: https://ecos.vs.gov.bc.ca/ Everyone else can apply here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/forms/vital-statistics/vsa529_fill.pdf Once you’re done that, print all necessary documents but don’t send it yet. You need the gender marker change application still. This part should cost $137. If you are under the age of 19 you will also need to write a hand-written letter about why you want to change your name.
3: Declaration Witness Before you can mail your application for your name change you need someone who is qualified to do so to witness you signing your application. I had a lawyer for mine only because my mother is a lawyer. Anyone from a notaries public is qualified for this stage. You can find one here: https://snpbc.ca/
4: Gender Marker Change Application As of January 2022, you no longer need a diagnosis in BC to change your gender marker if you’re over the age of 12, so this process has been made so much simpler. Application: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/forms/vital-statistics/vsa509a_fill.pdf Cost can range depending on what you choose, mine was $54.
5: Mail Your Applications Now that you have everything you need, you must mail it to the Vital Statistics Agency in Victoria. The address will be on your documents. Please remember to include your original birth certificate, photocopy of criminal record check receipt and the signed document given by your witness. If you’re not from Canada then a copy of your permanent resident or citizenship card. After this you now must wait.
6: What To Do After After a while you will receive a letter stating your gender marker has been changed and you must surrender your now old birth certificate. Do not worry, it was already surrendered as it was needed for the name change too and should’ve been sent. You will also receive one from Ottawa about your criminal record check and they will send you a copy of whatever the RCMP or whoever did your fingerprints sent them. After about 10-15 weeks you will receive your Change of Name certificate and your new birth certificate, this is important as you’ll need it to update your IDs. With it will also be a list of everything that will need to be updated afterwards. I am updating my IDs first as everything else will require updated ID.
It is a lot of work but it is so 100% worth it! I hated having to explain why my ID said I was female when the photo clearly had a man on it. I also hated having my full deadname be displayed on my Paypal when dealing with commissions. It’s so freeing not having that burden anymore. I hope this was helpful and if anyone has any questions do feel free to ask :)

(US centric advice) if ur on government benefits you'll need to individually notify the county in addition to the social security administration and your health insurance.
update your pharmacy accounts, as well as your accounts with lab test results.
in college and university, you need to triple check your name is updated with administration and financial aid, they often have different systems that don't update simultaneously. Your FAFSA will also need an update, and it needs to match the name on file for the institutions you receive financial aid/loans from, otherwise your payments will be delayed as they issue corrections.
you need to inform the credit bureaus each individually of the name change.
If you have student loans or an ABLE savings account, each institution will have their own process for name changes. In California, CalABLE requires a notary to notarize the name change, and they will need your state ID/driver's license to do so. notarization costs about $25 if you use an online service like Notarize [link]. Notarize will let you type in the chat and will type back if you tell them you need it. I haven't tried calling in with an ASL interpreter yet, but they say on their website that is welcome.
If you receive paratransit, you will need to update your name with them to receive an updated identification. You will also need to update the Department of Rehabilitation/Vocational Rehab of the name change.
If you are also changing your gender marker, there will be hurdles at the pharmacy and diagnostics labs (e.g. Quest Diagnostics and similar). be prepared for wonky results as they try to figure out which set of normal lab values to apply to your results, and conflicts with insurance over hormone prescriptions.
i'd recommend also updating payment methods on subscriptions and websites where you have saved payment info after you update it with your banks. this can be a surprising slog if you dont prep for it in advance.
things to update after a legal name change!
Social security card
Driver’s license
Passport
Birth certificate
Employer HR
Bank account
Credit card company
Car insurance
Health insurance
Utilities
Cell phone account
Voter registration
Your school
Professional organizations (for nursing, bar, teaching, etc.)
Doctor’s office & other health specialists
TV & internet
Paypal
*Please add to this list if you can think of anything else!!!

Name Change Process in England and Scotland
Name change process is a significant step, and both the UK and Scotland have established processes to make it official. Though there are similarities, Scotland and the rest of the UK have some differences in their procedures. In the UK, excluding Scotland, the name change process is straightforward. The most common method is through a Deed Poll, a legal document that proves you have changed your name. This allows you to change your name on official documents such as your passport, driving license, and bank accounts.
You can create your own Deed Poll or apply through a solicitor or online service. Once signed and witnessed, the document becomes legally binding.
Enrolling the Deed Poll
You can enrol your Deed Poll in the Royal Courts of Justice to make it part of the public record. This step is not mandatory but is often used when applying for visas or residency in other countries.
After receiving the Deed Poll, you can use it to update your personal details on official documents.
Name Change Process in Scotland
In Scotland, the name change process is slightly different. It can be done through the Registrar General or by statutory declaration.
You can swear a statutory declaration before a solicitor or notary public, which confirms your intent to change your name. This is a formal process similar to the Deed Poll in the rest of the UK.
In Scotland, if you were born there, you can apply to the National Records of Scotland to update your birth certificate. This is not a common practice in other parts of the UK.
After your name change is recognized, you will need to notify relevant authorities such as HMRC, banks, and passport offices.
Both systems ensure that your new name is legally recognized and can be used for all official purposes.

I'm learning I'm incapable of being bored.
I've been on vacation from work for 3 days. Not even a full long weekend yet. And I'm taking the online notary public training course. Why? because it's free (well $40 for the license) and it will look pretty on my resume.
ADHD is silly.

How to verify immigration consultants for Canada PR?
Verifying immigration consultants for Canada PR is essential to avoid fraud and ensure that you receive accurate and lawful guidance.
Here's how you can verify an immigration consultant:
1. Check for ICCRC/CICC Membership
- ICCRC/CICC License: Ensure that the consultant is registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). Every authorized consultant must have a RCIC (Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant) number. You can verify this by searching their name or RCIC number on the CICC official website.
Read for more information: What is ICCRC (Now CICC)?
2. Verify the Consultant's RCIC Number
- Visit the CICC’s website and search the consultant’s name or RCIC number. This will show if they are legally authorized to provide Canadian immigration services.
3. Look for Authorized Representatives
- Only three types of representatives are authorized to give Canadian immigration advice:
1. RCICs (Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants).
2. Lawyers and paralegals who are members in good standing with a Canadian provincial or territorial law society.
3. Notaries who are members of the Chambre des notaires du Québec.
4. Read Client Reviews and Testimonials
- Research online reviews and feedback on platforms like Google My Business, Trustpilot, or social media pages. Look for verified testimonials from genuine clients.
5. Verify Office Location
- Reputable consultants typically have physical offices. Be cautious of consultants who only operate online without a verifiable physical address. A genuine office provides credibility.
6. Check for Transparency in Fees
- An authorized immigration consultant should provide transparent fee structures. Avoid consultants who ask for exorbitant fees upfront without a proper agreement or breakdown of services.
7. Beware of Red Flags
- Avoid consultants who:
- Guarantee visa or PR approval (no one can guarantee this).
- Ask you to provide false documents.
- Pressure you to make hasty decisions without clarity.
8. Ask for a Written Agreement
- Ensure that you have a formal contract outlining all services, fees, and timelines. A professional consultant will always provide a Retainer Agreement. Verifying your consultant properly will ensure a smooth and secure Canada PR process.
