No Such Thing As Filler

Okay, so yes, this is another post based on something I saw that irritated me, but it seems like this idea keeps coming up, so I need y'all to internalize this. There is no such thing as filler in good writing. None. Do not approach your work thinking you have to fill space in a story, I will beat you with this wiffle bat. Don't ask me where I got the wiffle bat. Don't even worry about it.

The idea of filler comes from a very particular place - when an anime or TV show has to fit in a certain number of episodes, but doesn't have enough content (hasn't caught up with the manga, the source material isn't long enough, etc) to cover those episodes. An episode has to be written, but the characters can't really progress, and so are given something else to do. Many a trope has come from these episodes, and they're sometimes necessary. Filler in this context is something that makes sense.

The dark side of filler is the idea that you need some space between Big Event 1 and Big Event 2 in your story, therefore you need throw anything in there to take up space and make your word count. This is a mistake I've made and I've seen plenty of other writers do it too, but it's a huge waste of your time. You do need something between those big action scenes, but you should always be writing to accomplish something.

Instead of thinking of that writing as filler, try to approach it with three things in mind:

Move Forward With Character Development and Backstory - Your characters barely survived a huge gunfight, and they won't encounter the big bad again for another few chapters. How do your characters decompress from that gunfight, and what does that say about them? Did a cocky character go in guns blazing, only to be deeply shaken by how a real fight works? Did that fight spark a moment of deep trauma for the main character that they have to reflect on afterwards?

Filling this space with meaningless scenes is a huge waste of opportunity. Think about how to dive deeper into your characters.

Move Forward With Plot and Subplot Development - The bad guy beat the heroes to the stolen gem, but they left behind a clue to why they want it. However that clue could reveal some painful truths about the protagonist's beloved great aunt... Carmen Sandiego???

A major goal following a big action scene is having the characters figure out what to do with what they've learned and what to do next. It's where romance subplots or secret relative subplots make progress, when truths are revealed and next steps are taken. You can absolutely do this in any setting - a flirty conversation while at the battling cages, a tense moment of feelings while hunting down a wayward chicken - but your main goal is making progress for both the characters and plot.

Move Forward With Worldbuilding - Worldbuilding has it challenges, believe me. You don't want to write a chapter on how an airship works only to have to cut it later. But you should still try to flesh out your world, and you should do so with the perspective of how to use that worldbuilding to your benefit. Maybe a critical scene hinges on the main characters knowing how that airship works, or that lake your main character often stares at is the setting of the big Act 3 Boat Battle. The weather can play into both perspective and emotions. Knowing what the main character's house and car looks like can reflect a lot on their personal character or backstory.

When you're struggling with a scene or a chapter, rather than writing filler, take a few steps back and think. What can you establish with your worldbuilding? What can you reveal about your characters through their dialogue and actions? What subplot could you explore or add in these between moments?

Filler from a fandom perspective - Now let me make this clear - if you're writing a fanfic just to have a cute moment between the characters you like, or you really want to force everyone to do that weird Twilight baseball scene, that's fine. You don't need a grand goal to achieve for every story, there's no need to justify your fanwork in any way other than you wanted to do it.

But I'd also argue fanwork doesn't fall under the filler label either - something you create, be it a character snapshot or a 'what if the gang meets Slenderman' parody, isn't taking up meaningless space. It's something fun you did that you and others enjoy, and there's nothing wasteful or pointless about that.

Lake - Infinity Train (non-canon)

it's not canon but you cannot tell me that Lake isn't an allegory for trans/nb people. her arc is so beautiful and her character resonates with me so much!

i have to admit, i actually kinda hated her in the beginning because of how aggressive and rude she was, but she actually gets good character development and you can also understand why she was the way she was, being a good representation of a minority who is constantly suffering because of the social norms she’s forced into. also i don’t ship her with jesse but i do like the idea of them in a qpr or just being platonic besties.

(i use she/her pronouns for Lake because that's what they use in the series, but also because not all non-binary people use they/them, and it's kinda weird to see people insist on using they/them for Lake just because she's nb-coded. she has never shown an aversion to bring referred to with she/her pronouns.)

Le Chevre x El Topo - Carmen Sandiego (canon)

they are side characters who don't play a huge role in the narrative but they are a really cute couple and have been confirmed to be canon! even without the confirmation, it’s clear that they were written to be a romantic couple.

mild spoiler: after the series ends, they stop being antagonists and instead put up a food truck together! it’s the cutest thing, i swear

Ryan x Min-gi - Infinity Train (non-canon)

my OTP through and through! i say non-canon but the romance is so heavily implied, you cannot ignore it.

they're a good example of childhood friends who had a complicated relationship where both individuals did something wrong, but in the end, they grow as people and manage to mend their relationship together.

Moomin x Snufkin - Moominvalley (canon)

i have only read one of the books and watched a few clips of these two characters but from that alone, it's clear that they were written as lovers (and the author is queer too!)

they are a beautiful portrayal of long-distance relationship where both individuals have different needs in life, but still want to be with each other regardless.

Terrestrius / Terry - The Dragon Prince (canon)

Terry is canonically transmasc and they actually manage to explain this in the series, without making it sound too forced or expository. he's such a sweetheart too, and his relationship with Claudia is actually really sweet, despite the fact that she's one of the villains.

Carmen x Julia - Carmen Sandiego (non-canon)

again, i say non-canon but it is heavily implied that they have feelings for each other, especially in the extra interactive episode, where Carmen leaves a bouquet of red roses for Julia, and Julia is shown to blush when receiving them.

Amaya x Janai - The Dragon Prince (canon)

what’s that? it’s actually possible to write an enemies to lovers romance that is healthy and not extremely abusive?

Amaya and Janai have such a good relationship in S5 (and Amaya is also a great disabled representation!) Janai actually learns sign language to communicate with Amaya, and there are no unnecessary miscommunication plots or drama, they’re just a really loving wlw couple.

Benson x Troy - Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (canon)

when i say we need more mlm ships in animated media!! i’m so glad us sapphics are getting a lot of representation but it’s time cartoons started including more queer men.

benson and troy are just a really sweet couple with a good relationship that doesn’t have a ton of pining or unnecessary angst. while i love complex and tragic queer relationships, i also think that it’s good to show teenagers just being teenagers sometimes.

this opinion seems to be scarce in the queer community, which really annoys me tbh.

Raine x Eda - The Owl House (canon)

i cannot believe that given the popularity of TOH, Raeda is still such an overlooked ship. this might be an unpopular opinion but Raeda is better written and has more chemistry than Lumity and Huntlow.

just within the span of Raine's introductory episode, they managed to establish a clearly romantic past between these two characters, and also an interesting dynamic. and even though they didn't have much screentime, they still turned out to be the best ship in the series. (again, just my opinion, don't come at me)

i think it's so important to show older queer people in media, just as it is important to show younger queer characters. it helps establish the fact that queerness has always existed and isn't some newfound trend that social media invented. not to mention, raeda is one of the very few canon ships that include a non-binary character.

SPARKLY MISSION

The city lights twinkled like a million tiny stars against the night sky, casting long shadows on the rooftops. You stood on the edge of a tall building, the cool breeze tousling your hair as you kept your eyes on Crackle. He was a few feet away, checking his gear with the kind of confidence that came naturally to him. Tonight’s mission was like any other VILE operation: infiltrate, extract, and vanish without a trace. But this time, there was a difference—you were partnered with Crackle.

“Ready to rock and roll?” he asked, his voice dripping with that familiar cocky edge. He moved closer, his presence as electrifying as his name suggested. The corner of his mouth curled up in a sly smile that was half tease, half challenge.

“Always,” you replied, your tone calm, but your heart was already pounding a little faster. “The real question is, are you ready to do this without getting us caught in some sort of electric mess?”

He chuckled, a sound that sent a shiver down your spine. “Where’s the fun in that? I thought you liked a little excitement.”

You couldn’t deny it—missions with Crackle were never dull. His unpredictable nature, his sharp wit, and the way he could make any mission feel like a high-stakes game kept you on your toes. And though you’d never admit it out loud, you found his cockiness a bit…charming.

Crackle moved to the edge of the roof, peering down at the balcony several stories below where your target was located. “So, who’s going first? You want me to show you how it’s done, or are you gonna surprise me?”

“I’ll let you take the lead,” you said, a teasing grin playing on your lips. “I want to see if the legend matches up to reality.”

“Oh, so now you’re calling me a legend?” he shot back, his eyes gleaming with mischief. “Careful, keep talking like that, and I might think you’re starting to like me.”

“Starting?” you scoffed lightly, but your heart skipped a beat as you watched him. “You wish.”

He flashed a grin that was equal parts arrogant and endearing. With a graceful leap, he vaulted over the ledge, landing silently on the balcony below with the agility of a cat. He looked up at you, his grin never fading. “Your turn, if you can handle it.”

Rolling your eyes with a smile, you followed suit, landing beside him with ease. As you straightened up, your shoulder brushed against his, sending a wave of electricity through your skin. It wasn’t just his abilities that could shock, apparently.

“You okay?” he asked, his voice softer, almost concerned, though the playful glint never left his eyes.

“Perfect,” you replied, trying to steady your breathing. “Just didn’t expect you to actually stick the landing.”

He leaned in a little closer, his breath warm against your ear. “Oh, I can stick all sorts of landings,” he whispered, his tone low and teasing. “But I’m guessing you already knew that.”

A flush crept up your neck, but you refused to let him see you flustered. “I’m not here for your... gymnastics skills, Crackle.”

He smirked, clearly enjoying the back-and-forth. “Really? Because I could’ve sworn I caught you checking me out earlier.”

You scoffed, but you couldn’t help the smile tugging at your lips. “Maybe I was just wondering how you manage to fit that giant ego through the door.”

He chuckled again, a deep, rumbling sound that made your stomach flip. “It’s not easy, but somehow I manage.”

Before you could respond, a noise from inside the building caught your attention. Crackle’s hand brushed yours as you both instinctively moved closer to the wall, hiding in the shadows. The contact was brief, but you swore you felt a spark—more than just his usual electric touch.

“Stay close,” he murmured, his voice suddenly serious, but still tinged with that playful tone. “Wouldn’t want you to get lost.”

“I can handle myself,” you whispered back, trying to ignore the way your pulse quickened at his proximity.

“Never doubted it for a second,” he said softly. “But just in case… you know I’ve got your back.”

You nodded, grateful for the darkness that hid the heat rising to your cheeks. For a moment, you let yourself feel the thrill of it all—of the mission, of being this close to him, of the danger and the flirting that danced between you like a live wire.

Crackle pressed a gloved finger to his lips, signaling for silence as he moved toward the balcony door. With a deft flick of his wrist, he disabled the lock, the faint crackle of electricity illuminating his smirk in the dark. “Ladies first,” he said, stepping aside with an exaggerated bow.

You rolled your eyes again but couldn’t suppress a smile as you slipped past him. “Such a gentleman.”

“Only when it counts,” he replied, following you inside.

The room was dimly lit, shadows casting long shapes on the walls. You both moved silently, your footsteps perfectly in sync as you made your way towards the display case in the center. Inside was the artifact—an ancient necklace rumored to possess powerful abilities.

“Looks like we’re almost there,” you whispered, but Crackle’s eyes were on you, not the prize.

“Yeah,” he murmured, his gaze lingering on you a moment longer than necessary. “Almost.”

You felt your heart race again, but you focused on the task at hand. With a quick glance around, you nodded to Crackle, who stepped forward, his fingers dancing over the alarm system. Sparks flew, and the system short-circuited with a satisfying pop.

“Nice work,” you said, genuinely impressed.

“Thanks,” he replied, his voice low. “But I think we both know the real challenge is yet to come.”

You arched a brow. “Oh? And what’s that?”

“Getting out of here without causing a scene,” he said, but his tone was suggestive. “Though, if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t mind causing a little trouble… with you.”

You laughed softly, shaking your head. “You’re impossible.”

“And you love it,” he shot back, his grin widening.

“Maybe,” you admitted, unable to stop the smile spreading across your face. “But let’s get out of here first, okay?”

“Deal,” he agreed, but as you moved to grab the artifact, his hand brushed yours again, lingering for a moment too long.

You glanced up, meeting his eyes. For a moment, the world seemed to slow, the mission forgotten as you stood there, caught in the electricity between you.

Then, with a knowing smile, Crackle pulled back. “Come on, partner. Time to make our getaway.”

You nodded, your heart racing for reasons that had nothing to do with the danger around you. Together, you slipped out of the room, back onto the balcony, and into the night, leaving the thrill of the chase—and the tension between you—hanging in the air.

As you made your escape, you couldn’t help but glance back at Crackle, who caught your eye and winked.

“Until next time,” he murmured, his voice full of promise.

“Yeah,” you whispered back, a smile playing on your lips. “Until next time.”

CARMEN SANDIEGO? In 2024? It's more likely thank you think! Please excuse the shit quality for some reason I wasn't allowed to upload the normal pdf and I had to upload a fucking screenshot???

So my friend convinced me to watch Carmen Sandiego and since he's watching ALL of Ninjago for me I thought it was the least I could do to watch four season of a show with a pretty decent concept but uh... yeesh, don't get me wrong the show is really fun but lord have mercy does it have problems especially the last two seasons which were just so wildly disappointing to me. It went from a show with an interesting look on morals to pure pro-cop and mostly black and white thinking so quick (that not mentioning the breaking up a found family full of people with abandonment issues) it was honestly just so disappointing so me and the friend who introduced it to me decided to rewrite it! (I will not be animating nor do I plan on doing more than MAYBE a comic or art piece here and there because my chronic pain ridden ass can not handle that much lol)

The main goals are to:

1) Flesh out characters that aren't Carmen and actually give them reactions based on their lived experiences and how they might realistically react instead of what the show needed to move the plot along

2) Having characters other than Carmen be actually relevant to the plot the main one being Chase Devineaux who we're gonna kind of have as a parallel to Carmen (trust me yall) as kind of a "What if Carmen didn't have her friends/family to ground her and fall back on" but for all the Chase fans out there (gods I hope there's some other than me) he will be getting a happy ending but bro is getting put through the RINGER first

3) Have both A.C.M.E (now standing for Administration for Containing and Monitoring Evil) and V.I.L.E be the bad guys. Also just as an extra bit of fun we're making VILE a full blown cult, they were very cult like in the show so we're just gonna make it one. Both are going to be very morally questionable and while it'll take a bit longer for ACME to show it's true colors don't you worry they definitely will ;)

4) We're doing canonical lgbtq+ rep, I know the show teased a lot of relationships and really only gave yall background gays not to say thats bad but we can do better than just a brief shot of a damn taco truck. I mean like come on in a story about a young woman going against the government for the greater good why not put some rep into it ya know!

5) We're making it light sci-fi, not like SUPER high tech but definitely beyond what we've got currently, as shown with Carmen's prosthetic, and don't worry I'm doing my research as a disabled person I know how it feels to be misrepresented or ignored so I want to make sure I'm being realistic

6) PLAYER ISN'T GOING TO BE A CHILD! I don't know if this bothered anybody else but to me it was really weird that this 16 year old's only friends were in their 20s!

Alright I think that's what I'm gonna say for now, I'd love it if yall tuned in for updates if your curious since this is a passion project for me and my friend and we're having a blast writing it!

Team Red: A Carmen Sandiego AU I came up with yesterday

Basically, Sheena, Gray, Jean-Paul, and Antonio (Tigress, Crackle, Le Chevre, and El Topo) all defect from VILE with Carmen.

Sheena and Ivy are a couple

Gray's got asthma, it's really tripped him up on some cases

They tackle VILE's crimes in groups of two or three, so that they can get extra work done

The boys are CONSTANTLY competing over who's got the nicer home country. Whenever Carmen goes to Brazil, France, America, or Australia, Jean-Paul, Zach, Antonio, or Gray is constantly yapping about how great it is.

Player, Ivy, and Sheena think it's the stupidest thing in the universe

Since so many of them quit at once, VILE is trying harder to get them all back. This means the Faculty and the Cleaners are out in the field more.

I don't plan on actually writing too much with this, so by all means, make content of it so long as you tell people who made it.

I am full into Carmen Sandiego Mood lately and love the Series and its complex Characters. So i wrote a little Oneshot about our beloved Dr. Bellum and a femal child reder (platonic of course!)

Little Lucky Charm

You were one of the few children on Vile Island.

Not created because someone found you, but rather brought into this world through a genetic experiment combined with dark science and the brain experiments of Dr. Saira Bellum.

A creation that should not have existed from an ethical point of view. But when you are born on Vile Island… or created like in your case, such a detail does not count.

The annoying baby phase was skipped and you saw the light of day at the age of 2, fully developed with the vocabulary of a toddler and the emotional ups and downs.

Some might say you are a little spitting image of Saira and Dash Haber. You inherited your 'mother's' bad eyesight and your father's gray hair, your eyes are blue-gray. You have a curious character but your parents taught you early on what behavior and following rules mean. At the age of 3, you are always very proud when you can help your mom with one of her experiments.

You don't understand that these are evil experiments that harm other people. For you, everything your mother does is exciting, much more exciting than the strange things that Aunt Cleo collects or the questions that Uncle Gunnar, asks you while grinning so strangely and writing something down on a pad of paper. Your mom also likes cat videos. Cats are soooo great!

That's why one of your favorite students at the Vile Academy is Tigress. She has a big cat costume and every time you run into her, you call out loudly and for everyone else to hear - big kitten - before you try to hug one of Tigress' legs. Most of the time, however, Tigress uses her acrobatic skills and her speed to get to safety from you. She's not really the person who likes children. But that doesn't bother you - you still like the big kitten. Even if she's not one of your mother's favorite students.

That would be Crackle - also known as Graham - but you don't find him half as nice as Paper Star. One of Uncle Gunnar's favorites. Which of course doesn't mean that you don't have a favorite among the male students at the academy. Even though he doesn't speak and speaks a completely different language, he understood exactly what you wanted to say with your toddler sounds and words, especially in the first few months after you were created. If you had to choose, your very best friend on the entire campus would definitely be Mime Bomb. You like him and he is currently trying to teach you his way of communicating.

You have a rather mixed relationship with your mom's other friends. After all, the last child on the island was Black Sheep - unfortunately, your paths never crossed.

You were created , after Black Sheep left the island. Countess Cleo was not good with children and once refused to look after you for a few hours at your mother's request, because Saira had to go to an international villain meeting in Seattle and the other Vile chairmen were busy and your father was on an outside mission in New Zealand. Luckily, Coach Brunt took on the task and gave you a cupcake. She is like the cool, strong aunt to you. Even if her outbursts of anger sometimes make you seek protection behind Uncle Gunnar. Similar to Cleo, Shadowsan also kept you at a distance and was always strict with you. Perhaps also because he didn't want an incident like the one with Black Sheep to happen again.

"Daddah back soon? Miss Daddah soooo much!" - you spread your arms to make it clear to Dash , in your video call via the tablet how much you miss him. It had been so many nights since you said goodnight to the moon and indirectly to Dash too, of course, and so many listening cd´s , that your mom put on for you to help you sleep while she was still working overtime in her lab and researching new inventions.

Sometimes your father didn't want you to call him that in front of the other Vile members, because it was actually just the DNA that Dash had thrown together with Saira's DNA. But you saw him as your father and didn't care if he would pull a dramatic face when Aunt Cleo made a nasty comment.

"I still have a lot to do. You will be a good girl for Dr. Bellum?" - Dash's answer sounded cold , but there was a spark of compassion in his eyes.

"Good girl, yes! Help Mommy! By by Daddah!”, you wave once into the camera as your father has to end the video call and then run out of your room with the tablet in your hand to your mother , to give the tablet back. Saira was careful not to give you too much screen time.

"There's my lucky charm! Come to Mommy, you can help me and Professor Maelstrom with an important experiment!" - with these words, your mom picked you up and you quickly dropped the tablet onto the sofa , before you automatically wrapped your arms around her neck and were curious about what kind of experiment it was.

You can help? How great! You're a good helper! A good girl to be proud of. Maybe there will be muffins or cupcakes for that later?

You were put down on a table in your mother's lab and Uncle Gunnar came into the room followed by Crackle. Crackle , was told to sit in the chair… it didn't look like a normal chair… not really like your high chair either, which you were less and less keen to get into. Was it a new chair?

“…..it won't happen again…I can get better!”, - said Crackle as the arm straps closed.

“Was Crackle naughty....bad?”, you asked curiously to Uncle Gunnar as your mom approached the now immobilized Crackle with a small device.

Gunnar stood next to you at the edge of the table, partly because you leaned forward curiously and threatened to fall down - he grabbed you and put you down on the floor….the cleaners, had enough to do, they don't have to remove blood stains from a toddler.

“Oh indeed. Crackle broke the rules and now has to face the consequences”, - said Gunnar with a devious undertone.

“Bad Crackle! Don't break rules! Time out,” - you said, making clicking noises with your tongue.

“Oh my little lucky charm, I don’t think our Crackle can make up for this rule breaking with a time out” - your mother laughed, almost in a delusional manner, and then turned to Crackle.

“It won’t hurt, you’ll just be a little dizzy… and then the happy days will follow!”

The next thing you saw was your mom putting the strange device on Crackle’s head, turning it on and then Crackle letting out a few panicked screams , before his body remained sitting on the chair, asleep and without the energy to defend itself. Apparently he had fainted.

Your mom starts to laugh evilly, Uncle Gunnar starts to laugh amusedly, so it must be something good… the evil Crackle has learned that you should follow rules… so you giggle childishly once and clap your hands several times, you adapt to the mood of the adults. Because they know what is right and what is wrong.

“That’s my girl! Just watch careful, then one day you'll be just as wonderful a scientist as your mommy!” - your mother said happily, first putting the strange device away and then picking you up again.

“Your thoughts and brain experiments are getting better . And Crackle won't remember anything?”, said Gunnar as the two were on their way to the meeting room, where the other chairmen of Vile were already waiting for them. You had now rested your head tiredly on your mother's right shoulder and your eyes half closed, you would soon be asleep.

“I guarantee that Crackle won't remember anything , that has to do with us, the island or Vile… but I will never forget my boy,” said your mom.

Half asleep, you pat your mom's left hand and the glove.

“My mommy! Me mommy's favorite”

Uncle Gunnar's amused laughter penetrates your ears like cotton wool as you get increasingly tired.

But you hear your mom's answer and loving words very clearly before you slip into a gentle sleep.

"Of course you are mommy's favorite, my favorite girl…my favorite lucky charm. Forever"

Every time i rewatch Carmen Sandiego (2019), all i see a show that had huge potential that was watered down to be a kids show

Carmen Sandiego 2019 really had great potential, but the way the writers decided to write it had the perfect goal in mind, but the execution to get that goal fumbled. The Character introductions felt empty, allot of logical questions were left unanswered, the story was a jumbled mess, etc etc I think it's safe to say that this being meant to target kids is what held the show back. why? because its dark topics really pulled the show to progress. but at the same time, they had to tone it down because the target audience wasn't the matured audience there's so many topics i can bring out because of how long i've been trying to analyze this show. the psychology behind each character and the show itself, how i think the story actually makes sense despite the show writers leaving us hanging, how their dynamic works and what their breaking points could be. the fact that the things that we can literally see in the show makes little sense makes it hard for its viewers to understand how deep this story really is. like it's a fucking iceberg man, the amazing art style and femme fatale lead barely scratches the surface. only those who REALLY try to delve deeper into CS are those who can see it clear. but let's be honest, not everyone will be THAT invested in deducting this themselves. not everyone is willing to make time to try understand why the show is as is. and it makes me sad because of the things people are missing out on

Tumblr keeps recommending me posts with some of the worst takes on Catra’s character. Always an//ti//Catradora posts. (Like, did we watch the same show? We couldn’t have possibly watched the same show. Why the fuck would anyone compare her trauma to Hordak? Because they are on two entirely different character journeys, at wildly different age ranges and maturity, and with wildly different amounts of time to grow and change. Never mind the constant outside negative authority influences on Catra all the fucking damn time, that Hordak never has to deal with until season 5. And fortunate for Hordak, Prime doesn’t allow him the free will to choose a path, so Hordak gets a free pass, his character growth and budding humanity remain intact.) Don’t get me started on this, I could write a whole critical analysis on why Catra is a wonderfully written complex character, and why comparing her to Hordak is fucking ludicrous. Honestly the lack of comprehension about writing, character, fantasy, narrative and trauma astounds me when I see some of these Catra hate posts pop up in my recommended feed.

Tumblr, hopefully your algorithm gets this, but I LOVE Catra. I love her. I love this tortured mess, I love the writing that went into her character, I love her waffling precarious hold on sanity and reason. I love how she struggles to cope with her trauma. I love the realism put into her character despite the fantasy setting. But I also love that they didn’t push the realism too far, because it is at the end of the day a fantasy story. I love the delicate balance they wove into her character. I love the complexity and thought put into her entire character arc through the whole series. (And before anyone comes to crucify me, I say I love Catra, as a person who suffered immense parental trauma and manipulation. As a victim of some of the worst of it. I shouldn’t even have to mention my own trauma to justify appreciating a FICTIONAL character. But here we are.)

Would I have loved one extra season to really explore her redemption more thoroughly? Yes of course. An extra season would have been delightful to explore a lot of the character relationships more thoroughly. But we didn’t get that, and what the show creators did give us was still wonderful and satisfying. (Even if I have some critiques on some things.) the writing of the show at the end of the day is still smart, and tight, and so so competent. (Looking at the myriad of other story driven cartoons and shows that fall apart in the later seasons or just have an overwhelming amount of inconsistencies and botched writing. **coughs** Voltron, Miraculous, YGO, Netflix Carmen Sandiego, Bleach, many animes in general, just to name a few. Not that I didn’t love and adore most of these shows too.) the fact that She-ra (2018) stayed consistently tight and snappy and smart with their writing, narrative, and characters from beginning to end is a treasure.

Anyway. Catra is great. I could write a character analysis going into why from a writing and storytelling standpoint. But honestly I don’t think anyone cares that deeply, and I don’t exactly have followers who are particularly interested in She-ra. Tumblr, you god forsaken windfall apple, please stop suggesting an//ti//Catra and an//ti//Catradora posts. I don’t want to see them. I support the canon relationships. And I support the non canon ships too. What I do not support is hating on shippers who like other ships. It breeds contempt in a fandom, and leads to a fandom canabalizing itself until there are no fans left. Also letting hate and disdain take up such a large amount of time and space in your brain, leads you down some dark paths mentally.

FrozenWing's 2024 Fanfic Overview

Saw @itsdappleagain and @mmaricarmen23 doing this and thought it'd be fun!

Words Written: 96,928 (full disclosure though: some of the fics I posted last year were written in 2023. But since a lot of the writing I did in 2024 never got posted, I think it all evens out)

Total Fanfics Posted: 20! And I hit a few milestones, like 70 fics published, then 80 (...holy smokes that many?!?)

Fandoms: Carmen Sandiego 2019 (of course), Tangled: the Series, and Frozen; nothing new there.

Events Participated In: Player Week, where I did 5 of the 7 prompts. I also managed a fic for the '12 Days of Christmas Challenge' and Writer's Month (a fic I wrote several years ago but it still counts; I did write something new but it didn't come together in time). I wrote a really cute Carmen sickfic for Sicktember, but I...uh...got stuck on the ending and never posted it. Whoops.

Fanfic I'm Proudest of: Fading Crimson! I still have no idea what compelled me to write that, but I'm so happy I did. It was hard to write; the emotions are intense and were hard to put into words, and getting the progression of events just right so the drama of the final act feels earned was hard, but the effort was well worth it. It stands apart in my mind from the rest of my fics and feels extra, extra special.

Other Fics I'm Proud of: Really everything I posted. But if I were to pick three:

--'Fading Crimson's' companion fic 'It Isn't Fair!'. It was challenging at times to write; Player's emotions were pretty complex, but I love how it turned out.

--'Waterloo, or Laundry Day,' simply because it makes me laugh.

--'Coincidences.' it's as fluffy and fun as 'Fading Crimson' is sobering and angsty, and I just feel happy reading it.

--Bonus: the two Olympic fics; I just had the best time watching the Paris games and am reminded of that every time I see them. 😊

2025 Projects: More fics set after 'Fading Crimson;' that fic unlocked ideas for a slew of follow-up ideas fics that I can't wait to share (hoping to get the first one out soon!). I also have a bunch of one-shots I started last year that I'd like to finish (like the Sicktember one), as well as a 5+1. I'm also looking forward to just finding some new ideas and exploring those.

Anything Else: 2025 will mark five years of me posting fic to Ao3! Not a huge anniversary, I know, but it marks the first time I really started sharing my writing (outside of, you know, school, but that's mostly APA formatted research and thus totally different). Considering just how much anxiety I had about taking that plunge (I legit considered deleting my account in a moment of "WHAT THE HECK DID I JUST DO?!?"), I'm pretty excited I made it this far.

There's several events I'm looking forward to: Player Week! (already planning some stuff!). There are some others I want to try and participate in, like Writer's Month (of course) and Sicktember. How much I participate in those is iffy; I'm changing academic tracks and aren't really sure how much time I'll have to write, and the Muse is fickle besides, but I at least want to make an effort.

Most of all though I'm looking forward to another year of writing with y'all! I love seeing everyone's ideas and fics and just sharing in the joys of creating fic. Here's to 2025! 🥂
