Some words are already familiar to me from elementary school Spanish classes and the Tagalog language 🇵🇭 has some Spanish vocabulary. I'm mainly relying on Spanish YouTube and the website Dreaming Spanish to learn, which uses the Comprehensible Input hypothesis of listening 👂

There's an EU initiative going on right now that essentially boils down to wanting to force videogame publishers with paid games and/or games with paid elements such as DLC, expansions and microtransactions to leave said games in a playable state after they end support, or in simpler terms, make them stop killing games.

A "playable state" would be something like an offline mode for previously always online titles, or the ability for people to host their own servers where reasonably possible just to name some examples.

I don't think I need to tell anyone that having something you paid for being taken from you is bad, which is a thing that routinely happens with live service and other always online games with a notable recent example being The Crew which is now permanently unplayable.

Any EU citizen is eligible to sign the initiative, but only once and if you mess up that's it. You can find it here. (https://eci.ec.europa.eu/045/public/#/screen/home)

Even if you're not European or you signed it already, you can share this initiative with anyone who is, even if they don't care about videogames specifically because this needs a million signatures and there is different thresholds that need to be met for each EU country for their votes to even count and could also be a precedent for other similar practices like when Sony removed a bunch of Discovery TV content people paid for. EDIT: There are also some things people outside the EU can do, as well as additional things some people in specific EU countries like Germany and France can do that aim to solve this same issue as well. (Note: There was a petition for UK people but the recent politics stuff there means it's on hold and has to be resubmitted and that may take some time.)

Eurovision 2005 - Number 14 - Son de sol - "Brujería"

For reasons best known to itself, TVE in Spain ditched Operación Triunfo as their vehicle for selecting their Eurovision representative in 2005. It had been hugely successful in launching the careers of young Spanish artists, but it hadn't produced a song or singer that came close to winning Eurovision, although the results hadn't been bad. The show continued, but for 2005 it had shifted to a summer slot in the schedules meaning it was time to launch a new selection show. Eurovision 2005: Elige nuestra canción was that show.

The submission window stretched a whole tens days from 31 January to 10 February for a show that took place over two days from 4-5 March. It all feels a bit rushed. Nevertheless they got over 100 songs submitted and from those, twelve were selected for a semi-final. Six were selected by televote for the final the next day. Squeaking the win in the final with 24.2% of the televote were Son de sol, three sisters from Écija in Andalucia and a song ostensibly about witchcraft.

Those three sisters are Soledad, Esperenza and Lola León whose parents were heavily involved in the cultural life of the Andalucian region, notably with flamenco. The band were taught traditional music and dance from an early age. This Eurovision appearance represents their first major push into the world of the music industry and their national final win was perhaps something of a surprise.

The song Brujería (Witchcraft) is by Alfredo Panebianco but perhaps more importantly was produced by Queco aka Manuel Ruiz, the brains behind The Ketchup Song. It is not a song about witches or witchiness. It is instead a torrent of unslaked lust burning at temperatures hot enough to melt steel. These girls are obsessed, captured by love magic to the point where ropes are no longer need to keep them bound, apparently. A little light bondage in your song never did any harm.

It sounds like surf-flamenco. It's exactly the sort of song I can imagine Quentin Tarantino using in a future film. Punctuated by the occasional Tom & Jerry xylophone sound effect and aiaiaiai from the male backing singers, the three sisters belt out their passion and unnaturally heightened physical desire in rapid fire, harmony-less matched voices. It's furiously fast and hot. Their voices could be heard as hard to listen to, but that's just part of the flamenco style paired with the distinctly un-Spanish surf guitars. It feels like it's escaped from an underground garage club in southern California in the 1960s.

I love it, but the Eurovision votes didn't. It finished twenty-first, though it was the best performing of the Big Four - all of whom were unceremoniously dumped at the bottom of the scoreboard. It seems the wider Spanish public didn't enjoy it much either as the single didn't perform well at all. As the Wikipedia page for the band says directly "Son de Sol have not enjoyed commercial success in Spain". After their second album, they were dropped by their label.

They have gone on to open and run a dance academy in their home town of Écija.
