“Bold Highway Robbery On Schumacher Road,” The Porcupine Advance (Timmins). March 17, 1920. Page 01. ---- Speedy Capture of Three Men Who Robbed Mill Superintendent ---- About ten o’clock last night Joseph Gingror was concerned in a ‘hold-up’ for a few minutes, and about ten o’clock this morning, he was ‘sent down’ for five years. Louis Giroux, young fellow of about 21 or 22, who was in the crime with Gingrorm was sentenced to three years at Kingston, while the third in the party of highwayman, Alphonse Fietu, a lad of 19 or 20, was sentenced by Magistrate Atkinson to two two years less one day in the Ontario Reformatory. Mr. Dorfman, mill superintendent, of the McIntyre Mine, was in town yesterday and had drawn a goodly sum from the bank, receiving the money in bills of one denomination consecutively numbered. After transacting some business here he started to walk home before 10 p.m. The three men, who perhaps, had seen him get the money at the bank or in some other way learned that he had a roll, overtook him on the road and invited him to get into their cutter and ride on his way. He thanked them and accepted the ride. At the top of the Hollinger Hill, however, they suddenly assaulted him, throwing him into the snow and jumping on him. While he was struggling with them they got his money, and upsetting him in the snow drift, jumped into their cutter and drove away. Mr. Dorfman phoned Chief Wilson, but could not give a very detailed description of the highwaymen. Chief Wilson and Officer Laporte, however, did good work very promptly. They figured that a livery rig was sued and so made enquiry at the livery stables. There they found a young fellow returning a rig, and questioning him closely, confirmed the ‘hunch’ that he had a hand in the deal. On closer questioning he admitted his part and implicated the other two men. The three were soon safely lodged behind the bars. About $100.00 had been secured by the robbers, and of this $50.00 was recovered last night by Chief Wilson, this amount in new bills of consecutive numbering bein pad by one of the men to his landlady for board. In the police court this morning the three men pleaded guilty and were sentenced as above by Magistrate Atkinson. Gingror, who was evidently the ringleader, and is a man of 33 year of age, was given the five-year term, while the two younger men were more leniently dealt with, the younger of the two escaping with a two-year term in the Reformatory. The other cases dealt with this morning at police court were chiefly ‘drunks,’ there being a couple of town cases, while Constable Raycroft of Moneta had A. Tanson and Steve Sinclair on ‘drunk’ counts, the former being fined $50.00 and the latter $10.00.
