I fear that “he’ll submit if you tell him to” line was massively misinterpreted, because the point of that line was to show how fucked up the nest/the ravens/Jean’s existence there was, and everyone took it to mean he’s just naturally submissive. We see over and over and over again that he is not. He tells us he is not. Submission was demanded and required if he wanted to survive. The only time Riko lost interest in sending him off to those players was when he stopped fighting back. And I constantly see people say he won’t defend himself because of this, but we have seen it. He picked Lucas up by the throat and threw him on the floor.

I also do not get where this submission to Jeremy idea is coming from considering he argues with him the whole book, and then picks up Jeremy and throws him on the floor. The idea that this relationship will work if one half holds the power and the other half has none is crazy. The idea of taking the leash and handing it from Riko to Jeremy is crazy.

To me, Jean read like a inactive volcano about to blow. He wrecked Neil’s entire dorm with his bare hands. He constantly bites back thoughts of violence, and sometimes, biting them back is not enough. He put it in his contract, because “soon enough his nature would get the best of him”. He is angry and he is about to blow and I really cannot take this interpretation of him as this submissive little thing that the Trojans just push around. The point of this series is to give him back his voice. And if that voice is this angry, I cannot wait to see him snap.

I do love though that so many of Jean's survival mechanisms and trauma responses are harmful to others. He's not a docile sweet little uwu boy, he's someone who's been through a lot and survived it by, among other things, helping torture someone, and now occasionally reacts instinctively to triggers by being verbally cruel or physically attacking others. He's really messy and while he does tend towards staying silent and dealing with trauma by hurting himself more than anyone else, he doesn't always. cause like you do what you have to to survive but recovery can be messy and inconsistent too.

A little over a month left before we get to read The Golden Raven. And as impatient as I am, I want to give a reminder to enjoy this time in the fandom as well. After we read it, we will never again not know Jeremy's backstory. We will never again not know how Jean and Jeremy's relationship progresses. We will never again not know if Kevin Day makes it out of this book unscathed.

I've been enjoying the chaos and seeing everyone make predictions way too much. I'm gonna love reading the book, but I'm also going to miss the speculations, the fear, the predictions.

like every aftg stan, tsc destroyed me and i can't stop thinking about it but there's definitely one thing that makes me go feral and it's when riko is about to hurt Neil and Jean grabs the tv as if he can take Neil out of riko's reach and then begs for Andrew to run to save him... like???? The way neil-kevin-jean protect each other??? The way all of them suffered in a different way but somehow understand each other so well???
