im watching this guy on youtube who makes chemistry videos of him doing random experiments, and he’s got some concerning safety procedures (or lack thereof) with most of the stuff he does, but the most appalling one, in my opinion, is how many vials he just sticks his nose in and sniffs. this man has a college degree in biochemistry with a minor in pharmacology. does it not occur to him to waft an unknown chemical instead of just sniffing it?!?

brought to you by him burning his nostrils by taking a huge sniff of a liquid (he was *pretty* sure he’d made cherry flavoring. apparently whatever it is smells and burns suspiciously like hydrochloric acid. wtf dude. waft.)

(wafting is a safety procedure in chemistry where you want to smell something in a safer way. you use your hand to fan the air above the vial/beaker towards you and you sniff that air. you do not sniff it directly, especially if it is an unknown chemical)
