Do not fear Trump
Steve Schmidt
Donald Trump is riding high, but soon he will be weighed down by the one thing he has shown over and over again in his life that he does not do well with: responsibility.
Soon he will be in charge, and his MAGA movement will control government.
Everything that happens next will be on their watch.
Everything.
Because Trump has surrounded himself with a creature cantina of unfitness, depravity, weirdness and nuttery, when the moment comes — and it will — where wisdom is needed, there will be none in the room.
Disaster will follow misjudgments that will be compounded by a mix of arrogance, certitude, incompetence, stupidity and epic ignorance. The American people will pay the price for believing the lies of a liar, who was made credible by the failure of America’s political elite over the last 25 years to do the things that they said they would do and make wise decisions.
[...]
Meanwhile, the great supplication and appeasement rolls along at Mar-a-Lago.
The parade offers important lessons about the cost of personal debasement in the pursuit of self-interest dressed up as something else.
Whether it is Justin Trudeau or Joe Scarborough, Trump devours weakness. He preys on softness. When his foes come calling they seem to do so with a bag full of quibbles, quivering and whining, while trying to play a version of Trump’s game. It never works. Ever.
Everywhere right now there is a spirit of accommodation, appeasement and supplication in the air.
What Trump plans to do demands opposition that does not relent, and does not tremble. The terrible abuses, corruption and malice demand resistance. The test ahead will be both political and moral.
Americans are a tough people. No wonder they hold the media in such abject contempt. People always reserve their greatest disdain for the people who treat them with contempt, and signal with each breath their smugness, superiority and arrogance. It’s basic human nature.
More than anything else, right now, Americans deserve leaders who are less worried about themselves, and more focused on the wellbeing of the American people. Fearful people can’t lead because cowardice, like courage, is contagious. When integrity, conviction and honesty are called for, cowardice is a cancer.
When Donald Trump takes power he will seek to stifle dissent, intimidate media companies, threaten opponents, journalists, and anyone who asserts themselves in opposition. This must be opposed loudly, fiercely and effectively. It must be confronted relentlessly without fear or panic.
Do not fear Trump. Do not give him that power. Instead, take it from him.
In time, he will fear the American people who will turn on him after a short season of abuse.
The greatest political failure of the last 80 years was the 2024 loss by Democrats to Donald Trump. Period. Don’t let anyone ever tell you this race was unwinnable. It was lost. Understanding the how and why of that is of the utmost importance because three short years from tonight we will be closing in on the home stretch of the New Hampshire primary. What comes next doesn’t need to remind anyone of what came before.
The political situation in America will be very different after 100 days of Trump. The time for pretending will have long passed by then.

Geographical Overview
Gorak Shep is located within the Sagarmatha National Park, home to the Sherpa people, renowned for their skills as guides and mountaineers. It is the final stop on the most common trekking routes to Everest Base Camp from Lukla (2,860 m), following what the Dalai Lama has called “the steps to heaven.”
This route takes trekkers from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and finally to Gorak Shep. Most trekkers spend the night there since their trekking permits do not allow them to camp at Everest Base Camp.
Additionally, Gorak Shep serves as the best “launch pad” for the ascent of Kala Patthar, which resembles a giant dune looming over the lakebed. For many trekkers, the summit of Kala Patthar, at 5,550 meters, offers the best views of Everest that most will achieve without a climbing permit, which must be obtained in Kathmandu at the Nepal Mountaineering Association.
The climb begins early in the morning when visibility is usually better. It takes about four hours to reach the summit and return. The hiking time from Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the weather, acclimatization, and individual fitness levels.
When to Go
The best times for trekking are in spring (March and April) and autumn (October and November), when mountain visibility is ideal, and temperatures are not excessively cold. However, in autumn, competition for lodging can be intense, though trekkers can usually sleep on the dining room floor.
During winter, from December to February, trekking is possible, but the vast majority of accommodations are closed, trails are snow-covered, and the cold is extreme.
Historical Notes
Gorak Shep was the original Everest Base Camp, used by Swiss climbers during their attempt to scale Everest in 1952. The camp was later moved closer to the mountain, just below the Khumbu Icefall.

Cenni geografici

‘How Lekki Free Zone Is Boosting Industrialisation, Tackling Unemployment In Nigeria’
Tumblr media
The country head, Nigeria, Alaro City, Yomi Ademola has said that the Lekki Free Zone (LFZ) has become a ray of hope for local and foreign direct investments (FDIs) and a way to address the problem of unemployment in a significant development for Nigeria’s economic landscape.
Disclosing this at a media parley in Lagos, Ademola stated that the presence of industrial plots in the LFZ, along with simplified regulations and investment incentives, is attracting foreign investments and domestic capital, resulting in the development of a thriving industrial ecosystem.
He said, “Every business wants to reduce their costs and increase their profitability. At the end of the day, that is what capitalism is about. We’re a free market economy. We want people to bring those jobs and invest here. Most multinational companies who have left Nigeria, have significant relationship with the ports. Nine out of 10, if not 10 out of 10 would prefer to have their companies situated close to the port.
The Lekki Deep Sea Port is already generating more revenue for the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) than Apapa. Meanwhile, the largest ship coming into Apapa is roughly 4,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) capacity. On the other hand, the ships coming into Lekki Deep Sea Port are 16 to 18,000 TEUs – three and a half to four times more.”
Speaking on the Alaro City project, Ademola said the city will help to bridge the housing deficit that is linked to the industrializtion drive in the free zone.
He said, “Alaro City is designed to accommodate everybody. We have residential homes and the other size of the city is for industrialization. We have completed about 200 units, out of the 576 units of apartment. We want more SMEs in Nigeria and foreign investors to take advantage of these unique opportunities.
“For instance, Aerial Foods, which produces ready-to-use therapeutic food, is situated at Alaro City. The company not only produces for Nigerians, but is currently exporting to other countries. For a company that needs to be efficient, looking to reduce costs, without compromising jobs or value proposition to their customers, then LFZ is the place for you.
“If you can bring down the amount of money you need to borrow from banks at high interest rate to pay for your working capital, including significant duty bill by locating in a free zone, that transforms the prospects of your company’s outlook, because you are saving millions of naira, that you would have spent on transportation, levies, duties, as companies situated in the LFZ are exempted from paying income tax, withholding tax on dividends, Value Added Tax and customs and excise duties, among others. Because of these benefits, we are attracting foreign investments, we are attracting new jobs and new opportunities.
Moreover, we can generate hard currencies by exporting to other countries. So, with the LFZ, we are bringing technologies, new jobs and attracting foreign investments into our country.”

Ola from Portugal! We're in the Algarve for the long weekend and are soaking up the beautiful views and super sunny weather ☀️.
We arrived yesterday and spent some time in Albufeira (first 4 pics), the most touristy city in the area and best known for its nightlife. I think it's obvious that I did not book accommodations in Albufeira 😜. The beach was really pretty though and the warm weather enough of a hint that we would need hats all day every day - very pleased Rob is wearing a hat for maybe the first time ever although we joke he looks like a 'dad tourist' now 😂.
Today we did a 12-ish km hike from Lagos to Luz (pics 5-7 show the views along the way). We started the walk just before Ponta da Piedade, an area full of cliffs, rock formations, and caves. Wildflowers were in full bloom too, so the trek was extra colourful. Afterwards we walked through the centre of Lagos - I loved the cobbled streets and random coloured / tiles buildings.

The Swift Rise of Elevator Companies in Nigeria: A Growing Industry with a Promising Future
In the ever-expanding urban landscape of Nigeria, the demand for modern infrastructure continues to soar. As cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt grow taller and more sophisticated, the elevator industry has found itself at the forefront of this transformation. The swift rise of elevator companies in Nigeria is a reflection of the country’s dynamic growth, especially in its real estate and construction sectors. With rapid urbanization, increased building heights, and a growing emphasis on modern amenities, the elevator industry in Nigeria is undergoing a significant boom. In this blog, we’ll explore the factors driving this growth, the key players in the market, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for elevator companies in Nigeria.
The Growth of Urbanization and Building Developments
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has seen significant urbanization in recent years. According to the World Bank, more than 50% of Nigerians now live in urban areas, and this number is expected to rise. As the country continues to experience population growth and economic development, the demand for modern infrastructure, including high-rise buildings, commercial complexes, and residential towers, has surged.
High-rise buildings and skyscrapers are becoming more common in Nigeria’s major cities, and with these tall structures comes the need for elevators. Whether for residential, commercial, or public spaces, elevators are no longer a luxury but a necessity. This rapid rise in building developments has created a perfect storm for elevator companies to thrive.
Key Drivers of the Elevator Market
Booming Construction SectorNigeria’s construction sector is one of the most significant contributors to its GDP. With real estate development increasing across the country, there has been a corresponding demand for vertical transportation solutions. Developers and architects are keen to provide amenities that meet international standards, and elevators are now an essential feature for most modern buildings.
Economic Growth and Middle-Class ExpansionAs the Nigerian economy continues to grow and the middle class expands, there is an increasing demand for comfortable and convenient living conditions. Elevators, particularly in residential buildings, are an important part of this trend. The rise in the number of high-end residential buildings, malls, hotels, and office spaces all require efficient elevator systems to accommodate growing populations.
Technological AdvancementsThe elevator industry in Nigeria is also benefiting from advancements in technology. Modern elevators now offer more than just convenience—they are also more energy-efficient, require less maintenance, and come with advanced safety features. This technological progress has made elevators an even more attractive investment for building developers and property owners in Nigeria. Additionally, new digital innovations such as smart elevators and predictive maintenance systems are becoming popular, further driving the market’s growth.
Public and Private Sector InvestmentsBoth the public and private sectors in Nigeria have been investing in infrastructure development. Government policies favoring the construction of modern office buildings, residential towers, shopping malls, and hospitals have increased the need for high-quality elevator systems. Private investors, particularly in the real estate sector, are also contributing to the demand as they seek to build more luxurious and modern properties for sale or rent.
Key Elevator Companies in Nigeria
Several companies have positioned themselves as leaders in the Nigerian elevator market, offering a variety of services, including elevator installation, maintenance, and modernization.
Kone NigeriaKone is a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry and has established a strong presence in Nigeria. The company provides cutting-edge elevator solutions with a focus on energy efficiency, safety, and reliability. Kone’s expertise in providing modern and high-quality systems has made it a preferred choice for both residential and commercial developers in Nigeria.
Schindler NigeriaSchindler is another major player in the Nigerian elevator market, known for its innovative elevator technologies. With a reputation for providing top-notch lift solutions in commercial and residential buildings, Schindler has a significant market share in Nigeria. Their offerings range from standard elevators to more advanced systems for skyscrapers and high-rise buildings.
Otis NigeriaOtis is one of the most recognized elevator brands globally and is a strong competitor in the Nigerian market. Known for providing state-of-the-art vertical transportation solutions, Otis has become a preferred brand for some of the country’s tallest and most prestigious buildings. Otis offers both installation and long-term maintenance services, ensuring that their systems operate smoothly for years.
Lift Technologies NigeriaA homegrown player, Lift Technologies Nigeria has emerged as a major competitor, providing cost-effective elevator solutions to a variety of clients. The company offers installation, repair, and modernization services tailored to meet the specific needs of the Nigerian market. Their focus on customer satisfaction and competitive pricing has helped them build a solid reputation.
Thyssenkrupp Elevator NigeriaThyssenkrupp is renowned for its high-performance and efficient elevator systems. The company’s innovative technology and service offerings, including high-speed elevators and eco-friendly solutions, have made them a popular choice for developers and builders in Nigeria’s growing real estate sector.
Challenges Facing the Elevator Industry in Nigeria
Despite the rapid growth of the elevator sector in Nigeria, there are several challenges that the industry must overcome:
Power Supply IssuesOne of the most significant challenges in Nigeria is the unreliable power supply. Frequent power outages can disrupt elevator operations, leading to downtime and inconveniences for building occupants. To address this, many building owners invest in backup generators, but the cost of maintaining these generators can be high.
High Cost of MaintenanceElevator maintenance can be expensive, especially for high-end, sophisticated systems. Given Nigeria’s economic realities, some property owners may struggle to afford regular maintenance services, which can lead to reduced elevator performance or even breakdowns.
Import DependencyA large portion of the components used in elevator systems are imported, making elevator companies dependent on foreign suppliers. This dependency exposes them to currency fluctuations and import duties, which can increase the cost of elevator systems.
Skilled Workforce ShortageThe elevator industry requires a skilled workforce to handle installation and maintenance. However, there is a shortage of qualified professionals in Nigeria, which poses a challenge for elevator companies to deliver quality services consistently.
The Future Outlook for Elevator Companies in Nigeria
The future of the elevator industry in Nigeria looks promising. With continued growth in the construction and real estate sectors, along with ongoing urbanization trends, the demand for elevators is set to rise. Companies that embrace technological innovations and focus on providing energy-efficient, cost-effective solutions will have a competitive edge in the market.
Moreover, there is an opportunity for local players to expand their market share by investing in skilled labor, reducing dependency on imports, and offering personalized maintenance services. The key to success in Nigeria’s elevator industry will be to address the challenges while capitalizing on the growing need for vertical transportation solutions.
In conclusion, the elevator industry in Nigeria is positioned for a bright future, driven by urbanization, technological advancements, and increased demand for modern infrastructure. With the right investments in innovation and customer service, elevator companies will continue to rise alongside Nigeria’s expanding skyline.

I'm stealing this because it's too funny: "Bed, bath, and beyond a reasonable doubt."
+
Reading the federal criminal complaint against Donald Trump was akin to a hallucinatory experience, where the words yielded to flashes of imagination that pixilated into grainy images in my mind’s eye. It was like a movie unfolding with Trump and his valet squirreling boxes filled with America’s most sensitive secrets all around Mar-a-Lago — like Lord Grantham and his faithful Bates hiding a surprise from Lady Mary at Downton Abbey. Apparently everyone knew, including the Dowager Countess, and they all cooperated fully with the FBI investigation.
Here is what Trump had in his possession:
The classified documents Trump stored in his boxes included information regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries; United States nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack. The unauthorized disclosure of these classified documents could put at risk the national security of the United States, foreign relations, the safety of the United States military, and human sources and the continued viability of sensitive intelligence collection methods.
The alleged crimes are serious and his breaches are a deep betrayal of Trump’s oath of office, duties, responsibilities and obligations. He did not protect the Americans in harm’s way whom he endangered with his brazen incompetence and malice. It also demonstrated that Donald Trump is an imbecile of the highest conceivable level. He is a supernova of narcissistic idiocy.  The US government literally begged him to return the documents, but he would not. He just wouldn’t do it. He wanted them.
His petulance is simply staggering to comprehend. Donald Trump is a real-life, combined Veruca Salt and Augustus Gloop. He is sloppy, spoiled, self-indulgent, destructive, arrogant, selfish, and ultimately, a cartoon villain who exists in flesh and blood. He is America’s toxic clown, our most dangerous fool and gravest danger. He is the perfect reflection of what is most broken and corrupted in our land. Donald Trump is America’s champion of indecency, dishonesty, treachery and weakness. He is a liar, a nihilist and an extremist, who stands for himself against the ideals that America proclaims — faith and fidelity — but none of this is new.
We have arrived at the tragic destination that was always inevitable. This moment has come because the American people allowed it to happen. We gave Donald Trump political power by choice. The American people elected him in 2016.
Thousands of elected Republican officials at the local, county, state and federal level capitulated to his insanity and venality through a thousand acts of cowardice, appeasement and fearful submission. They allowed him to lie at will, grift at will and abuse his power at will. There was never any bottom because there was never any barrier or net to stop Trump from swimming lower. There was no degenerate statement, no malfeasant action, or disgraceful conduct that would break their devotion, which was built on silence, accommodation and deference to actions they had once disdained and condemned. Donald Trump became more important for them than everything, including their integrity, honor and country.
The evidence is the fanatical defense of Trump against the indictment. Fundamentally, the GOP response is an attack on the American justice system that rivals their collective and years’ long attack on the American electoral system.

Lagos, and Portimao - Portugal.
After walking for a month, it was time to relax. Caught a bus out of Muxia, to Fisterra, then Santiago de Compostela, and a night bus down to Lagos. Not much sleep on the way. Arrived and found the beach. Was a bit cold, but had a dip.
Then into town, found a really nice mini golf course to play, which had frogs on the course that would fire water at you 😂. Managed to get on the leaderboard for the day! Bit of a hassle with the accommodation, but got somewhere to sleep for a couple of nights. Went to Prato Cheio for dinner - really nice traditional food. Had lulinhas (baby squid) and clam cataplana (stew with tomato broth)
The next day, we walked around the southern coast, really amazing cliffs and beaches. Good swimming and relaxing. A couple of days with mainly the beach and swimming was great.
Over to Portimao for a few days. MOC got quite sick, so spent over a day recuperating.
Aside from the beach, I went to a museum, and learned about the sardine industry, and saw a photography exhibit.
