Their name means something like swimming or living jewel koi, given their stunning colorations and their usually friendly and calm behavior. It's literally therapeutic to watch these fishes swimming around and many people keep koi ponds at home to symbolize success, fulfilment, ambition, perseverance, advancement in life, etc. In domestic ponds, they can live from 15 to 35 years, but in optimal conditions, Nishikigoi can live up to 100 years or even longer - there are stories that the oldest koi fish ever recorded was supposedly around 226 years old at the time of her death!

New (old) shoji
Some friends had a surplus set of old shoji from their stash of parts on their modern minka build.
Our local carpenter advised they were 'Osaka-style', with their mid-height windows. Traditionally, a bit too expensive for a plain minka, we stripped them back, relacquered, and added some paper in a semi-nishikigoi pattern to match the traditional red walls of our kitchen.

Nishikigoi, or Koi
Fact from Nippon.com :  In prewar Japan, a residence boasting a garden pond filled with nishikigoi was a symbol of wealth. Nowadays, with large swaths of the Japanese population living in small homes and apartments in cities, nishikigoi have become a rarity. This is not to say, however, that demand for the ornamental carp has fallen. Exports of the fish, a favorite of wealthy foreigners, are booming and producers of nishikigoi have seen revenues skyrocket. Nishikigoi were first produced in the late Edo period (1603–1868) in Nijūmuragō, a district in Niigata’s Chūetsu region that now spans the municipalities of Nagaoka, Ojiya, and Uonuma. The fish were originally farmed for food. The area is known for its heavy winter snowfalls, and in those days communities would be cutoff from vital supply routes for months at a time, making nishikigoi a prized source of protein. Farmers kept fish in irrigation reservoirs in the warmer months, then in winter moved the carp to ponds attached to farmhouses, covering these with lids or erecting stout poles to prevent the snow from accumulating and suffocating the fish. Some farmers even kept carp in ponds dug under the floorboards of their homes.

The legend of the koi fish
Many years ago in Ancient Asia, the River of Heaven and the River of Earth were divided by what was known as the Dragon Gate. To cross, one had to swim against the current and climb a large waterfall. Species of all kinds swam up these rivers, with the koi fish being the only one willing to try to cross from one side to the other again and again.
After years of effort guided by its determination, a single koi fish managed to reach the top. Recognized by the gods, it became a great golden dragon. Thanks to its drive and perseverance, the koi fish represents strength, determination, courage and transformation. They also symbolize perseverance in the face of adversity, fortitude, persistence, patience and longevity.
