We Might Still Get Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker for the Switch

 ***Disclaimer: I am not a trademark lawyer. I am only a regular person trying to make sense of the numbers. I am not making a formal stance as I may be reading the information wrong.***

***Warning: This is going to be very long with lots of pictures.***

A lot of people are bummed about there not being a Zelda All-Stars for the 35th anniversary. Some are even thinking that Skyward Sword HD is all we’ll get since it is already so close to the anniversary. But I’m here to say that we could probably still get it, or at least Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker separately. Here’s why I think that and it’s the same reason why I knew Skyward Sword was coming: The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). You can also find the same information on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database.

What’s so important about trademarks? I don’t know, but I know they are important enough that the government is involved with regulating it. All I know it essentially means you have ownership over that mark. Remember when the Fine Bros tried to trademark “React”? (link) The USPTO and WIPO database are public to search for any trademarks in any category.

A few months ago when people were starting to guess what Nintendo was going to come out with for the Zelda 35th anniversary, I happened to remember that you can use the USPTO database to figure out if a new product was coming out. I decided to look some things up. The first thing I searched was Skyward Sword. **Tumblr ruined the quality of the images, but if you click on it, the quality should be better.

Edit: Clicking on the image will NOT work if you are on desktop and directly on my blog because Tumblr sucks. You can right click and hit view image, but that will take you from the page. You can also zoom in with your browser controls if you don’t want to go back and forth between my page. Both options may still be hard to read, so right clicking, view image, then zoom may be be the best option.

A trademark for Skyward Sword? With the priority date (apparently when Nintendo filed in a different country), filing date (apparently when Nintendo filed application in the U.S.), and registration date (apparently when USPTO allowed it) all being in 2020? And in the “recorded electronic game programs; downloadable electronic game programs; recorded video game programs; downloadable video game programs; video game cartridges; and much more categories” categories and more? Why would a divisive game that is a decade old get a trademark in 2020? So that’s how I knew the game was coming to the Switch.

So what about the other games?

Ocarina of Time?

Also a 2020 trademark under the same category that Skyward Sword was in. Should note that the priority and filing dates are in 2020, but the registration date is in 2021.

Majora’s Mask?

Same as Oot and SS, but we have some differences. Priority and filing dates are in 2020, but there is no registration date. It does have published for opposition listed for 2021.

Wind Waker?

Same position as MM. Priority and filing dates are in 2020, but there is no registration date. It does have published for opposition listed in 2021.

Twilight Princess? *Spoiler: It doesn’t seem promising.

Yeah the years on this are 2007/2008. It does have a renewal date in 2018, but it is listed under the category of compact discs and other distinct categories. The other ones are under downloaded games or video cartridges categories. There seems to be no overlap.

Off topic, but when I search twilight princess, only two things pop up: TP’s trademark and that huge monstrosity of a filing. Like look at how many words they tried to trademark?! And it’s from one person! Edit: Turns out it is around 660 words! Apparently she went to court about it, too, if you are curious. (link) Back on topic.

I should note that I could not find a separate listing for Zelda All-Stars, but I also can’t find a separate listing for Mario All-Stars. Only Sunshine has a 2020 trademark listing; 64 has a 1996/2000 trademark with a 2020 renewal and Galaxy has a 2006/2007 one with a 2017 renewal. Again, I may be reading a lot of things wrong here. All that’s on the USPTO database; I’m getting more info on the WIPO. 

On WIPO, I did not find listings for Mario or Zelda All-Stars. 64′s active trademarks are from the late 90′s. Sunshine has 2020 trademarks. Galaxy has some active 2018 trademarks but not in the US. So It seems like there is some differing info. Let’s see about the Zelda games.

Skyward Sword has 2020 trademarks with some pending in Canada (CA), New Zealand (NZ), etc and some active in Australia (AU), Japan (JP), United States (US), etc. All filed under video game categories similar to the ones listed with USPTO and Skyward Sword’s trademark. Not surprised it is active in the US because if we compare it to the USPTO, SS has a registration date (when USPTO allowed Nintendo’s trademark).

Ocarina of Time has 2020 trademarks with some pending in CA, NZ, etc and some active in AU, US, JP, etc. All under video game categories. Not surprised it is active in the US since in the USPTO, it has a registration date.

Majora’s Mask has 2020 trademarks with some pending in CA, NZ, US, etc and some active in JP and AU. All under video game categories. It is pending on WIPO in the US and it also does not have a registration date in the USPTO database.

Wind Waker has 2020 trademarks with some pending in CA, US, NZ, etc and active in JP and AU. All under video game categories. Again, pending in the US and no registration date for the UPSTO.

Twilght Princess has 2006-2008 trademarks with them being active in JP, US, KR (Republic of Korea). All under video game categories.

What does this all mean? We already know that Skyward Sword is coming. So maybe Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker will be coming soon but I don’t know when. I think pending/registration dates may be a factor as to the timeline, especially in countries with a big gaming demographic. But again, there are still decent size countries with pending status for Skyward Sword, so there may be more to it. I don’t think Twilight Princess will be coming soon considering all the evidence and especially since it was already got ported in 2016 onto the Wii U, but maybe one day TP fans. I have been sitting on the USPTO info for a while and wanted to let somebody know, and now seems like the time.

Again, I am not versed on trademark terminology. Any extra information that isn’t directly from the databases came from a quick google search and my skimmed over analysis of it.

Edit: Ignore the next paragraph. I was an angry gremlin by time I finished this and was venting.

If there are any errors and I was not clear, I have been working on this for five hours. I also realized that WIPO was a thing while making this, so I had to go and research it. Tumblr glitched and ruined half my progress. It is also 5am where I am. I am tired.

League Battle Basics

Hey y’all. Corey here, and I wanted to chat a little about one of my favorite Splatoon 2 features: League Battle.

To open up League Battle, you just need to rank up to B- in any of the three Ranked Battle modes.

What IS League Battle? Read on to find out!

We first introduced this feature in a Nintendo Direct (which you can watch HERE), but a simple way to describe League Battles is that they are highly competitive series of battles that you play with friends in two-hour chunks. It’s possible to play in League Battle for less than two hours, but if you play the full session, you’ll have the potential to achieve a higher score.

After two hours, the stages change, signaling the start of a new League Battle session. Your wins and losses during a session get reflected in a single statistic called League Power. And the teams with the highest League Power at the end of a session earn top honors.

While the mode uses Ranked Battle rules (Tower Control, Splat Zones, and Rainmaker), your actual rank won’t change. So it’s a great opportunity to test out new strategies without risking a decrease in your personal rank. It’s also a chance to go up against some of the most skilled squid squads from around the world and learn from the best! Sure, you may suffer a few terribly lopsided defeats against elite teams every now and then (for this reason; we recommend keeping your windows closed so your neighbors aren’t alarmed about the yelling coming from your living room). But you’ll be surprised how much you can improve your individual and team skills by playing League Battles with a group of friends.

League Power

This important stat expresses your team’s performance. When you first start out a League Battle session, you won’t have any League Power. After seven battles, you’ll get assigned an initial League Power, and from the eighth battle onward, you’ll see it increase and decrease based on wins and losses. As you might expect, defeating teams with a high League Power is a quick way to increase your own League Power. And the only thing that matters at the end of the session is your maximum League Power, so if you go on a losing streak and nosedive towards the end of the session, it’s totally cool.

The first seven games in a League Battle session determine your initial League Power.

Two or Four

You can join League Battles as a pair or as a team of four. Joining as a four-squid team gives you more options to communicate among all of your teammates, especially when combined with the voice chat feature of the Nintendo Switch Online app. On the flip side, when joining as a pair, you get matched with a different pair every match to create various four-squid teams and battle against other teams comprised of pairs.

Within the League Battle menu, you can view past records or join a new session as part of a four-squid team or a pair.

Results and Position

About ten minutes after a session ends, you’re able to see how your team stacked up when compared to other teams in the session. Players with the highest League Power will earn gold medals, and other top teams will earn silver and bronze medals. These medals won’t translate into in-game bonuses, but you’ll still earn experience and in-game cash from battles, not to mention potential bragging rights.

You can see your results by going to Past Records within the League Battle menu. In this session we scored a bronze medal, just on the cusp of silver!

In addition to being able to see your League Battle result in-game, you can also find additional detailed stats using the SplatNet 2 feature of the Nintendo Switch Online app. Here you can see the total number of medals you’ve earned, as well as the top 100 teams from each session. You can even see the weapon compositions used by each team, which might come in handy when forming future strategies.

If you tap the globe icon in the upper right, you can sort your performance by region. In the above session, our squad didn’t break the global top 100, but we did rank 34th among North America and AU/NZ! Room for improvement!

As a reminder, all online services and features for Nintendo Switch, including online gameplay, are free until the paid Nintendo Switch Online Service launches in 2018, so now’s a great time to jump into the action. I'm sure people know by now that MHST is out~ There has been some funky things going on I hear that certain places in USA would be giving out preorder (hero) pack DLC.. Amazon also had done this, and apparently you are entitled to it from preorder before the 8th but some people are having issues. one friend had contacted amazon for the DLC who promptly redirected them to contact nintendo.. what's the deal? Europe had a preorder for the (hero) set.. including monster pack and artwork book from the e-shop Oceania AU/NZ got nothing from pre-order BUT if you download the game from e-shop (as of right now) you will recieve the (explorer) pack which includes a water rathian and a zinogre (ice?) A little bit of a release day nightmare there!

Buyer Beware!

It turns out that while there seems to be minimal region locking on physical products for the Nintendo Switch, there is for online purchases!

Only they’re so harsh, you need to be in the same country. So for example, an Australian looking to save some money and buying their games from Europe, will not be able to purchase the DLC from the Aussie e-shop, if their Nintendo account is set to Australia.

I just got off the phone with Nintendo AU and they advised to create a second (dummy) Nintendo account, and have that set to the UK so it then it can access the correct e-shop.

My call was about Splatoon 2′s Octo Expansion though Nintendo AU told me they’d also heard cases about the Bayonetta code which comes with Bayonetta 2.

European-bought Games / Codes can only work with European e-shop.

Aussie & NZ-bought Games / Codes can only work with the Aussie & NZ e-shop.

Nintendo Switch: What You Need To Know

Back when it was first announced in October of last year, the Nintendo Switch received much deserved hype due to it’s amazing promo teaser video. Not many details were revealed from then till now. Last night, Nintendo held their first conference fully devoted to their brand new console. Here are the most important details that were revealed last night.

Price & Contents

Let’s get the most important thing out of the way first, the Switch is $299. The box will come with the Switch console, the docking station with HDMI and power cables, a pair of Joy-Con controller and the Joy-Con grip. No games have been announced to be contained within the package, but I would hope that they throw in a mini-game bundle just like they did with the original Wii and Wii Sports.

Innovation & Portability

The heart of the Switch is basically a glorified tablet that can be used to either plug to your TV or take on the go. The Switch can slide into a cradle, which plugs to your TV via an HDMI connection. The cradle will also charge your console (which can also be charged via an USB-C connection), for whenever you use it outside your home. The dock enables the Switch to display 1080p resolution while connected, and 720p on it’s 6.2″ handheld display. The handheld display has a decent battery life, ranging from 2.5 to 6 hours depending on it’s use. As an example, Nintendo used it’s new Zelda game  and announced that the game takes around 3 hours of battery.

The controller also changes, depends on whether you have the console dock or not. While docked, you have the option of using the default Joy-Con connected to a “grip” which enables you to have a more traditional control scheme. When used for portable gaming, the Joy-Con’s slide out of the grip and into the sides of the console. Apart from this, the Switch also supports 2 player gaming by just using one pair of Joy-Cons. Each half works independently from each other and contain the same buttons (check the graphic above) which gives you the option of handing the other half to a 2nd player in your home. The controllers also come equipped with HD Rumble (Nintendo’s newest rumble feedback technology), a accelerometer and gyro sensor which will be used for motion based gaming.

Games

Nintendo will stick with the small cartridge format that slide into the console. No new Mario game at launch, Super Mario Odyssey will come by the end of the year. Instead, we get The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wind which will be the Switch’s main launch title. Other titles included at launch are Just Dance 2017, Skylanders Imaginators, and 1-2 Switch.  1-2 Switch is their mini-game bundle which features an assortment of games including quick draw, boxing, fencing, etc. The Switch’s day one line up looks pretty weak but Zelda will be worth it all.

However, the future looks bright as Nintendo is finally getting the 3rd party support that it’s past few consoles have sorely lacked. This time around many well known developers will work on content for the wii, some of these names include Bethesda, Capcom, EA, Ubisoft and Square Enix. As of now, the Nintendo Switch seems to bring the innovation from past systems with the support that they’ve previously needed. Even if it doesn’t have anywhere near the best graphics or specs in the market, it looks like a fun system that will aim to please gamers who travel a lot. The Switch has promise, but the question remains whether it will deliver it’s full potential or stall like the Wii U did.

Nintendo has announced a special tie-in between the Pokémon Let’s Go games and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If you have save data of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee on your Nintendo Switch, Pikachu and Eevee will become available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as Spirits in the World of Light adventure mode from December 14. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, those with save data for Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu will unlock the Partner Pikachu Spirit, and those with save data for Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee will unlock the Partner Eevee Spirit! They can be unlocked by completing challenges, too.
