summary: after the year you’ve had, you didn’t have high hopes for this summer but one night at the start of camp, succeeded in changing your mind.

constantly being in a cabin full of people could be overwhelming at times. and there was something about nighttime that brought you solace, which you found hard to find at shallow lake. so here you were, sat on a log bench on a chilly summer night, quietly watching the fire dance in front of your eyes.

as you tried to let your thoughts disappear with the flames, you felt someone slowly approaching you, out of the corner of your eye.

“hey.”

nini greeted you, pulling you out of your meditative state. she looked like she was trying not to startle you, and it very well reflected on her face.

“hey!” you looked up and replied, trying to keep your surprise under control.

she smiled and sat next to you, hands in her burgundy cardigan’s pockets. “so, what are you doing here, can’t sleep?”

“yeah, something like that.” you glanced down at your hands. “you?”

“oh, i needed to get some fresh air. felt a bit suffocated inside.”

she chuckled at the end there and you took notice of how her face glowed under the firelight. the more you looked at her, the more you couldn’t ignore the pang of sadness you felt at the sight of her. then, you quickly adverted your eyes, not wanting to cry tonight.

last winter break, you and nini had gotten closer and ended up having a little emotional fling. although it never ended up going anywhere, and you stayed friends, deciding it would be better this way.

still, you kept giving eachother long stares throughout the year, a reminder of the time you spent together, you often thought. you never allowed yourself to think about it too much anyway, falling for her again wasn’t something you could do again. it hurt you too much the last time.

nini watched the fire dance off of your face and eyes, making you look so beautiful that she couldn’t stop staring at you like this. she stayed silent as her eyes slowly trailed over your face, studying your features. she took in every detail, every dip, every slope. took in the way your hair curled around your ear and framed your face.

you were well aware of her staring and a smile threatened to break out on your face. you squeezed the blanket you were wrapped in tight around your shoulders before speaking up.

“you’re staring.” you said with a cheeky tone, watching the fire dance.

she cleared her throat and her eyes left your face the second you called her out, “i was looking at the fire.”

“mhm, you were definitely looking at me.” you said, a smirk on your lips.

she rolled her eyes at your words, a small huff leaving her. “nope, i was looking at the fire.” she lied again, even though you both knew what she had been doing.

you chuckled, “you’re a terrible liar.”

“i’m a great liar,” nini retaliated. she couldn’t help the smile that formed on her face, “you just know me too well.”

you finally looked at her, your head tilting to the side. “yeah, guess i just know you too well.”

the air felt thick and tense as you locked eyes, studying eachother’s faces. neither of you said anything, you only stared back at eachother, too entranced in eachother’s gazes to look away. it was probably one of the longest stares you’ve held.

nini was the one to finally break the eye contact, her eyes lowering after a moment. your eyes followed hers on their way towards the ground. you watched her carefully as she kept quiet and after a few moments of silence, cleared her throath to speak.

“i’m really sorry for everything that happened over winter break.”

you sighed. “you don’t have to keep apologizing, it’s fine.” you replied, your voice soft and reassuring.

nini shook her head. “no i do, i was stupid, i couldn’t let the past go and i hurt you.”

you took a deep breath, moved closer to her on the little bench and nudged her shoulder with yours as a non-verbal way to say that everything was forgiven. she did the same with your knee and smiled.

“i missed you, y’know.”

the words spilled from her lips before she had a chance to stop them. it felt like something she needed to say, she needed you to know that she missed you.

you felt your heart clench at her words, her eyes boring into yours for the very first time tonight.

in the span of a couple minutes, you were transported to the many looks you shared from far away this year. she looked at you the same way just now, like you were across the room only you were right next to her this time.

“i missed you too.” you murmured back, your voice quiet and soft.

nini didn’t even register herself moving after hearing you, it was more of an automatic response, like she had to get to you before it was too late. she leaned in, her hands lifting to embrace the sides of your neck as she looked back and forth between your eyes and mouth.

your heart started beating so fast, you could feel it in your ribcage. surely, she’d heard it as well. and in a few seconds, her soft lips were on yours.

the kiss ended as soon as it started and you lingered near her face, breathing with your mouth open, trying to commit this moment to mind. the tingling on your lips urged you to kiss her again, this time with purpose.

through the kiss, you hoped that the butterflies you’d always felt when she looked at you, she would somehow feel too. you held onto her lips for dear life, like she might disappear if you didn’t keep her on your lips, your hands cupping her face as she kissed you back just as hungrily.

your fuzzy blanket fell on the ground but you couldn’t bring yourself to care. you only cared about how having her so close to you felt.

once out of breath and pulling away, you laughed, hands still on eachother.

“is it hot in here or what?” nini said, trying to break the silence, clearly out of breath.

“yeah, i mean sitting by a fire should warm you up.”

she swatted your arm which earned her an ow! from you, fully exaggerating how much she hurt you. you eyes lingered on her face, before you carried on.

“god, you know— there’s this girl who i’ve recently kissed and she’s here at camp. anyway it’s going to be so awkward trying to avoid her and stuff.”

“yeah? i think this girl would love to spend every day of summercamp with you, actually.”

with that, her lips found yours again and you could’ve sworn that your heart did a cartwheel.

HSMTMTS Final Season Spoilers:

Ricky and Gina’s first relationships (Nini/EJ) prepared them for their own trials this season.

The thing about Ricky and Gina going thought similar situations as PW and Rini is to showcase not just why they’re different but that they’ve learned from their previous relationships too.

Because that’s the whole point.

Ricky’s relationship with Nini failed not just because they outgrew each other but because Nini wanted bigger things for herself and didn’t feel like she needed Ricky to get that anymore. She herself said on the pilot that being away from Ricky actually made her come out of her shell and pursue leading roles. And Ricky wasn’t ready to accept that change so in order to protect that relationship he started to become too attached and making Nini feel pressured about balancing YAC and Ricky. He thought he had to put Nini’s dream on hold only to realize not only did it made him selfish but not a version of himself he wanted to be. This is why he corrected all of those mistakes with Gina when presented with the same issues. Not just this final season but last season as well. (X)

It was stablished last season, Ricky’s love for Gina changed what he thought he knew about love. Gina is the representation of change.

For Ricky, the idea of Gina and him growing apart and walking different directions terrified him — he has seen this before and it didn’t end with people choosing him. But he wasn’t going to be the old Ricky that would delete Instagram posts and be like “I want you to leave the movie and stay here with me” and that’s because he now knows that’s not how you love. And he isn’t going to make Gina feel guilty about living her dreams. And that’s why he was the most supportive and attentive boyfriend she could’ve asked for. And Ricky knows it could cost him losing Gina but he is ready to deal with that as long as Gina is doing what she’s meant to do.

For Gina, she was living her dreams but Ricky is also part of her dreams. Gina’s arc has never been just about finding success but finding a place to belong and she found that (with Ricky, with East High). By holding the whole movie offer from Ricky, she understood why EJ did what he did last season and I think it was a very good learning experience for her and closure for the two of them. Gina was very naive and new in her relationship with EJ and going thought that allowed her to understand other points. I feel like if she hadn’t been in a relationship with EJ first she wouldn’t have known how to handle this issue with Ricky. But as opposed to Nini, who basically told Ricky she didn’t come back for him. Gina would fight for Ricky. Because she wants both the fame and him and I’m glad they didn’t have her compromise on either of those.

The contrasts and differences in all of those relationships needed to happen. It would’ve been too easy if Ricky and Gina were just in a perfectly honey moon stage even with all of those circumstances. And I would say they handled it gracefully and better than others would have (including PW and Nini). The thing about Ricky and Gina is not just that they both give the other something they need (stability, propose, ambition, understanding) is that PW and Rini gave up on each other too easy. Maybe because they just weren’t the right person. And if anything the season shows is that whatever happens next Ricky and Gina will find a way to make it work together and unlike Troyella (“who are not a real couple”) Ricky and Gina are.

the contrast between hsmtmts 1x10 and 4x08 concerning Ricky is crazy.

in 1x10 he leaves the performance, quite literally hightails it off the stage because he thinks he’s not good enough for nini. He thinks he’s not gonna be able to help her get into YAC because of how badly he’s messing up (and I mean, he messed up one performance and nini wasn’t even there, so how would he know??) and gives the role away to ej because he thinks “ej is the right Troy for ninis Gabriella.”

then compare that to 4x08 (and by association, 4x07). Ricky has never been more ready for this musical in his entire life. Even after he finds out about Gina leaving (which is almost worse than finding out your mom has a new boyfriend, even though he’s known about Todd since thanksgiving, don’t hurt me ok) Ricky keeps his head in the game and continues to be there for Gina. because he knows her. he knows that he needs to be there for her, in part because of all of his character development and also because Gina is the one. Gina is his person. Gina’s the one who constantly supports him and gets him and is there for him. so he stays with it and absolutely slaps the entire second half of the show. and then and then and then - man literally SPRINTS to the real stage in order to catch Gina before she’s too late. Because while nini had to practically pull Ricky into the aisle to begin their performance (a bit dramatic, but I digress) Ricky runs for his life (after his life / future hehe) so he’s able to give “the audition” (and the performance) “of a lifetime.” (Direct quote from the leaked script, by the way. I didn’t make it up) I dunno I just thought it was interesting how Ricky was one foot in the door the whole first season with nini, never quite committing, but the whole fourth season Ricky is jumping around inside the house being the absolute best boyfriend ever and chasing his future wife down to sing her a song.

I have no idea if this made sense or even if anyone will know what I’m talking about but it’s been on my mind for a couple of hours and I just had to say it

so hopefully it makes sense at least a little bit lol
