Der Lukas Moodysson tok for seg hippiebevegelsen, satt i sosialdemokratiske rammer, tar nå Jens Lien og Nikolaj Frobenius for seg krysningspunktet mellom den samme bevegelsen, og den rebelske punkens oppblomstring i en dramakomedie som ikke har sin like innen norsk film. Det har krevd solide porsjoner med mot både foran og bak kameraet.  På slutten av 70-tallet går vi direkte inn i en kjernefamilie. En familie med tre barn som lever i et slags limbo mellom hippibevegelsens frisinn, representert i far Magnus (Sven Nordin) , og en småborgerlig nostalgi igjennom moren Lone (Sonja Richter). Eldstesønnen har flyttet hjemmefra, mens de to yngste, Nikolaj og Thomas, fortsatt bor hjemme. Familiesituasjonen blir snudd totalt på hodet når moren dør i en ulykke, og i vakuumet blir yngste sønn Thomas sendt til onkel og tante, da far ikke klarer å ta vare på familien sin. Igjen sitter altså far og mellomste gutt, Nikolaj (Åsmund Høeg). Han har et stort behov for tilhørighet og for å finne utløp for sitt sinne. Inn kommer punken, en bevegelse langt fra far Magnus sitt inkluderende, naive og åpensinnede kultur. Sønner av Norge gjør en storartet jobb med å fange tidsånden den beveger seg i. Filmen baserer seg på Nikolaj Frobenius sin halvveis selvbiografiske Teori og Praksis. En barndomsskildring utenom det vanlige. Ikke fordi historien er så unik, men fordi de som befolker denne verden er alt annet enn etter normen. Det er mange følelser å spore i historien. Sven Nordins farsrolle er et slags juv av følelser, fra den frittenkende og løse hippien, til det store åpne såret i hans fundament som kommer når kona dør. Nikolaj er litt vanskeligere å putte fingeren på. En ekte rebell, viser det seg, men filmen har litt problemer med å gi oss en troverdig “reise” til sinnet han viser. Det satt til side har vi med et nærmest perfekt portrett å gjøre, i norsk sammenheng. Nordin gjør rollen som far fremragende. Det er et meget modig stykke arbeid han har lagt ned i rollen, og som generasjonen han tilhører, eier han heller ingen skam. Der gjør også filmen en genistrek, for selv om både portrettene av frisinnede hippier, nudister og til og med “harde” punkere ofte kan tippe over i det uønsket morsomme, klarer Sønner av Norge å bevare all troverdighet i behold, på tross av at det er en reell “putefilm” (dvs. du holder puta opp til ansiktet pga egen beskjedenhet). Lien har laget sin sterkeste film med Sønner av Norge. Der Den Brysomme mannen var en reise i forundring, er dette et befriende portrett uten å engang ense tilbakeholdenhet. Karakter: 4/5
