Would love to hear about the books u read in 2024, surprise bests, biggest disappointments?

I think I will do a multi part post over the coming weeks with reviews of all the books I read since I have about half of them written up already. For now I'll just say my two absolute favourite reads of the year were Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock and Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. Two very different books but both of them permanently altered my brain chemistry.

Below are my ratings for all the books I read and as I say, I'll try to post more in depth reviews over the next few weeks. My aim this year is to try and do proper reviews of the books I read as I'm reading them instead of having to go back several months later lmao.

Oh, and because it's something I'm always looking for specific recs for, I've highlighted the books with queer rep (that I remember) in pink, and the extreme horrors/books I advise checking trigger warnings for are marked with a lil skull.

Fic Summary

The Second Coming looms large. Supreme Archangel Aziraphale vows to fix Heaven without asking the impossible from Crowley. As their effort is complicated by unexpected friends, a guileful Metatron, and a Heavenly floor full of the Blessed Dead—Aziraphale and Crowley find navigating their relationship is not mutually exclusive from saving the world from Armageddon.

It went on like this, water falling like silk as Crowley pulled each limb out to canvas and admire it; the occasional caress teasing out frisson and occasional twitches of pleasure. Crowley's eyes would glow—molten—and melt Aziraphale until he couldn’t tell where the water ended and he began. The demon studied every hair and goosebump, every doughy curve and every taut muscle. Sometimes the demon would smile. The act would send jolts through Aziraphale’s corporation, and when the shockwaves returned to Crowley, he only smiled harder.

round 2 stats

while we wait out a week of voting to see who will be advancing to round 4, here's some numerical neatness from round 2!

total votes: all together, the 27 polls of round 2 received a total of 16,454 votes. hot damn!

largest percentage of votes: we didn't see quite as many astronomical defeats as we did in round 1, with only one PC winning more than 90% of the votes in any one poll (unsurprising, the choices get tougher every round!), but there were still some pretty large disparities to be seen.

Riz Gukgak (90.8%) - still only the third most brutal beatdown in the competition so far!

*Neverafter: while Gerard lost his poll against Rue, he was passed on by virtue of being the most successful losing character for the sake of keeping the pool even for round 3, meaning that Neverafter passed on 100% of its remaining characters by technicality.

1700s WOMEN - PART 1

The commencement of the 1700s saw women's hair styles stay fairly demure, but it wouldn't take long for them to become much more elaborate. The popularity for wigs in men's styles crossed over to women, and as such hair styling opened up to wider experimentation. The development of heated curling tongs - paired with wool pads and wire supports - helped achieve the voluminous dos synonymous with the era. CC links and reference images under the cut.

I tried to include most female characters in these ship lists, including some newer characters from Season 5.

All main girls get at least one or two pairs, but some are more popular in this chart than others. Once again, f/f starring older female characters are double-booked to allow more pairings.

First Talent makes it so that she gains 1 SP for every enemy she defeats during skill duration after the skill ends (up to a limit)

Second Talent gives an ATK buff to all Guards when she is deployed

Skill 1 makes her next attack deal increased damage and can hold charges, if she falls under abnormal status like Stun/Freeze/etc while holding a skill charge she will immediately cleanse herself when an enemy walks into her range and perform an attack

Skill 2 expands her attack range, increases her ATK and ASPD and makes her attack enemies within range randomly, subsequent skill activations grants her more ASPD (up to a limit)

Skill 3 increases her ATK and attack interval, enemies hit by her attacks will get Stunned and her main target will get Stunned for even longer, after every few attacks her ATK and Splash radius will increase (up to a limit)

Showcased Narantuya, a 6* Loopshooter Sniper that specializes in being in the frontlines to maximize her damage output

Second Talent grants her Physical & Arts Dodge and decreases enemy Physical and Arts Hit Rate within the 8 surrounding tiles

Skill 1 is stance change skill that reduces her attack range in exchange for making her disk jump to nearby enemies (up to a limit) before returning

Skill 2 makes her attacks deal a certain amount of Physical damage and inflict Slow, the disk will pierce her main target and increase in size before returning, hitting every enemy on the way back

Skill 3 allows her to throw multiple disks at once and when she retrieves her disks she deals Physical damage to a number of enemies in the 8 surrounding tiles

Showcased the event mechanic, tiles that reduce ally ASPD/increases enemy movement speed, these tiles can be cleared by attacking them rapidly (uses hit based HP), the tiles will disappear when all connected tiles have taken sufficient hits so players can choose to either deal with small chunks or intentionally connect the tiles with a deployable device to clear out a massive field at once

Announced an expansion for RA2 Tales Within the Sand with a number of new additions

You can capture certain enemies using special devices after weakening them enough, you can bring them to the base and keep them there and even deploy them in battle and have them fight alongside your operators

Added a "peaceful" difficulty setting where enemy raids will be disabled

New gamemode "Vector Breakthrough", looks to be an improved version of Interlocking Competition, you gain buffs depending on the operators you used in the side nodes

Announced the first expansion for IS5 adding a new starting squad and the fourth ending

Final thoughts

I enjoyed the book. The bad guy caught me off guard. I'd forgotten about him. What Lesley did to Peter was terrible. I liked Abigail and I’m glad she’s going to be part of the story more.
