Telling the hours in Japanese

The unit of an hour is called じ (kanji: 時 / Ji) in Japanese. If you want to say a certain time, you say “number + じ / 時 (ji)”. For example: One o'clock = いち じ (一時) Ichi Ji It's two o'clock = にじです (ニ時) です Ni Ji Desu Three o'clock = さんじ (三時) San Ji

*Not only 4 (Yoji) is a irregular (it's not YonJi), but also 9 (Kuji) is not it's most common form (Kyuu). In the case of 7, you could either say Shichi (しち) Ji or Nana (なな) Ji. Both are ok, but people tend to avoid Shichi (しち) Ji because it may be confused with Ichi (いち) Ji.
*時 (ji) is a unit and 時間 (jikan) is a counter for time. So, you use "時 (ji)" when you're telling the hours, as in "It's two and thirty right now", but use "時間 (jikan)" if you're talking about a specific time-frame, as in "It took me two hours to do that".
Now, look at the first chart again. The unit of minutes is called ふん (分 / fun). So, if you want to say "two minutes", you say にふん (二分 / nifun). But, if you want to say "one minute", you say いっぷん (一分 / ippun).
Numbers 1, 6 and 10 all use ぷん (pun) instead of fun;
Numbers 2, 5, 7 and 9 all use ふん (fun);
And numbers 3, 4 and 8 accept both forms.

5:05 = ごじ ごふん || 五時 五分

Practice Sentence #1
Note: With any language I learn, I occasionally make practice sentences in the language for practice. Because there are so few Okinawan resources out there, I thought I could post some of my practice sentences out there to give you guys something to read to check your understanding (even if I use grammar structures I haven’t explained yet in our main lessons). 
ガーナーまーさんどー! 日本うぅてぃ一番好ちなチョコレートやっさ! ガーナーまーさんどー! にふんうぅてぃいちばんしちなチョコレートやっさ! Gaanaa maasan doo! Nifun wuti ichiban shichi na chokoreeto yassa! Ghana is delicious! It’s my favorite chocolate in Japan.
ガーナー・Gaanaa = ガーナ + や
ガーナ・Gaana = Ghana (Both the chocolate brand and the country)
や・Ya = topic particle
まーさん・Maasan = Delicious
日本・にふん・Nifun = Japan (see below)
うぅてぃ・Wuti = particle marking location
一番・いちばん・Ichiban = Number one, Favorite, Best
好ち・しち・Shichi = Like
な・Na = na-adjective particle
チョコレート・Chokoreeto = Chocolate
やん・Yan = state-of-being copula
On Nifun: Nifun is an Okinawan word meaning “Japan,” but you may have heard of the word 大和・やまとぅ・Yamatu, which also means “Japan.” So, what is the nuance between the words? This is my conclusion based on observations on how yamatu and nifun are used:
大和・やまとぅ・Yamatu — Used to refer to mainland Japan (excluding Okinawa). It is often used to reference Japan when talking about Japan historically, particularly before the reversion of Okinawa to Japan in 1972. Yamatu is also used to talk about “Japanese” things that don’t apply in Okinawa (or the Ryukyu Islands). Things that originate in the mainland that aren’t naturally part of Okinawa use yamatu (specifically, I’m thinking of yamatuguchi, the word for the Japanese language). Yamatunchu refers to a Japanese person of Yamato ethnicity. While yamatu might be less of a loaded word than the Okinawan Japanese term naichi, the geography of what is covered by “yamatu” and what is covered by “naichi” is roughly identical (I’m sure a semantic debate could be made over whether or not Hokkaido fits into either of those two terms or not). However, like naichi, there’s an underlying connotation that yamatu is NOT Okinawa.
日本・にふん・Nifun — Used to refer to Japan as a nation (including Okinawa). It is often used to refer to Japan in the context of nationwide-phenomena (events, culture, experience, etc) or in the context of international relations/events, especially after the reversion of Okinawa to Japan in 1972. Looking at the example sentence here, we can note that the Ghana chocolate bar can be found throughout (the nation of) Japan, from Hokkaido to Yonaguni. Because it can be found nationwide and is not necessarily unique to Yamatu over Uchinaa or Uchinaa over Yamatu, Nifun would be the best word to use. Talking about Japan in the Olympics, nationwide coronavirus statistics, the number of Shinto shrines across the country — All these would be the context to use nifun over yamatu. Especially when talking about modern day Japan, unless you’re specifically talking about mainland Japan in the context where it is important to separate it from the Ryukyu Islands, nifun appears to be the go-to word. 日本人・にふんちゅ・Nifunchu is also a word, referring to a Japanese person - That is, both ethnic Yamato people and ethnic Ryukyuan people. An Okinawan person is uchinaanchu, a Yamato person is a yamatunchu, and both are considered to be nifunchu. That being said, there is no 日本口・にふんぐち・Nifunguchi. The Japanese language is still the language that originated in yamatu that was brought over to Okinawa after the Okinawan language was around and so, the Japanese language is still Yamatuguchi. Now, let’s say in a hypothetical world where Japan wrote official documents in both Japanese Okinawan. For “nationality” (in Japanese, 国籍), the Okinawan version would use Nifun as “Yamatu” is more of an ethnic homeland than it is a politically-existing country for legal citizenship classification. 
When talking about “Japan” throughout history, it might be helpful to know when nifun can or cannot applicable. 
Before 1609 — ONLY Yamatu
1609-1879 — As the Ryukyu Kingdom was still nominally independent, Yamatu is still the only appropriate word to use here. 
1879-1945 — This is a tricky point in time, especially given the cultural changes happening within Okinawa at the time. Though the amount of shared phenomena between Okinawa and mainland Japan during this time period was less as abundant than it is now, Nifun is an option available to you assuming it’s in the correct context though the chances for that context to pop up is lower than if you were talking about Japan today. For example, the term to use for “Japanese casualties” in the Battle of Okinawa, including both Japanese military and Okinawan civilians, might be Nifun. 
1945-1972 — As Okinawa was separate from Japan during this time period, Yamatu would be the only appropriate word to use for referencing Japan during this time period. 
After 1972 — With Okinawa returned to Japan, when referencing Japan during this time period, Nifun is an option available to you assuming it’s in the correct context. 
This was much longer than I expected it to be for a post about how I like chocolate, but I tried to be as thorough as I could here to give the best explanation as to the difference between Yamatu and Nifun. I hope I helped somewhat in that regard. Likewise, I hope other practice sentences can help you in the future.

In lesson 10 we learned how to say 6 o'clock or how to say 6:30 AM in Japanese. But how do we say 6:15? Combined 時間【じかん】 the meaning is 'time span' = hours. The same character is used when we talk about weeks. The Kanji character for 'week' is 週【しゅう】, combined with 間【かん】 it becomes 'weeks'. I lived in Tokyo for four weeks. ➜ 私 は 四週間 東京 に 住んでいました。 わたし は よんしゅうかん とうきょう に すんで いました。

Ukuhlupheka kwabo ngenxa kaNkulunkulu kungenxa yentshiseko yabo kanye nombono wabo omuhle ngezinto. Nakuba bekholelwa kuNkulunkulu, abayiqondi futhi abayazi intando Yakhe. Lokhu kungaba namuphi umvuzo? Ngisho noPetru, owayazi uJesu, wayengazi ukuthi angakhonza kanjani ngendlela efeza intando kaNkulunkulu. Kwaze kwaba sekupheleni, lapho esemdala, lapho aqala khona ukuqonda. Lokhu kusho ukuthini ngezimpumputhe ezingakaze zibhekane nalutho ezingakaze zibe namuntu oziqondisayo? Abakaze bahlupheke nakancane, kodwa ngaphakathi abamazi nhlobo uNkulunkulu. Abakaze bayigcine imicabango yabo emidala, imibono emidala, amasiko enkolo, nokuqonda komuntu, kanye nemibono yomuntu. Lokhu akukhona nhlobo ukuqonda okusha kubo. Akukho ngisho nokuncane ukuqonda ngoNkulunkulu okuyiqiniso noma okunembile kubo. Abayiqondi kahle intando kaNkulunkulu. Ingabe lokhu kungaba ukukhonza uNkulunkulu? Nokho benimqonda uNkulunkulu esikhathini esedlule, uma ningakwazi ukuqhubeka nakho namuhla futhi niqhubeka nisekela ukuqonda kwenu uNkulunkulu emibonweni kungakhathaliseki ukuthi uNkulunkulu wenzani. Lokho kufana nokuthi ungabi nakho ukuqonda okusha ngoNkulunkulu futhi wehluleke ukwazi umfanekiso wangempela kaNkulunkulu nesimo Sakhe seqiniso. Ake sithi ukuqonda kwakho uNkulunkulu kulawulwa iqembu labantu, imibono engenalo iqiniso futhi kuseyimicabango nezimfundiso zomuntu. Uma kunjalo, khona-ke kusho ukuthi awukanqotshwa. Enikudinga kakhulu ukuba nizihlomise ngamazwi kaNkulunkulu, okusho ukuthi nizihlomise ngokugcwele ngeqiniso nangombono ongaphambi kwenu manje, bese niqhubeka futhi niwenze. Lokhu kuyisibopho senu. Anginiceli ukuba nifune nokuba nizuze ukukhanyiseleka okukhulu. Okwamanje aninaso neze isiqu esingokomoya salokho. Okudingeka kini ukuba nenze konke eningakwenza ukuze nidle futhi niphuze amazwi kaNkulunkulu. Kudingeka niqonde umsebenzi kaNkulunkulu nendlela enakheke ngayo, isiqu senu esingokomoya, nokuphila kwenu okudala. Kubalulekile nokuthi nikwazi ukubona imikhuba yakudala eyiphutha nendlela yenu yokwenza. Ukuze nishintshe, kumele niqale nishintshe ukucabanga kwenu. Qale ufake umcabango omusha esikhundleni somdala, uvumele ukucabanga kwakho okusha kuqondise amazwi nezenzo kanye nokuphila kwakho. Yilokhu okucelwa kumuntu ngamunye kini njengamanje. Ningenzi noma nilandele ngobumpumputhe. Kufanele nibe nesisekelo kanye nomgomo. Ningazikhohlisi. Okufanele ningene kukho manje ukuba niphakamise ukuphila kwenu futhi niphakamise izinga lenu. Ngaphezu kwalokho, nidinga ukuguqula indlela endala enanibheka ngayo izinto esikhathini esedlule, niqugule ukucabanga kwenu, futhi niguqule imibono yenu. Impilo yenu yonke idinga ukuvuselelwa. Lapho ukuqonda kwenu izenzo zikaNkulunkulu kushintsha, lapho ninokuqonda okusha ngeqiniso lazo zonke izinto ezishiwo uNkulunkulu, futhi lapho ukuqonda kwenu kwangaphakathi kuthuthuka, ukuphila kwenu kuyoshintsha kube ngcono. Ingabe lokhu akusho yini ukuthi ukuliqonda kwakho sekuguqukile? Uma manje ubheka uhlu lozalo lukaJesu olunikezwe eVangelini likaMathewu, uzothi, “Uhlu lozalo lukaJesu? Suka lapha wena! Lolu uhlu lozalo lukaJosefa, hhayi lukaJesu’. Akukho ukuhlobana phakathi kukaJesu noJosefa.” Uma ubheka iBhayibheli manje, ukuliqonda kwakho sekwehlukile, okusho ukuthi ukubona kwakho sekuguqukile, futhi usunezinga eliphakeme lokuqonda kunezifundiswa zenkolo zakudala. Lapho umuntu ethi kunokuthile okukhona kuloluhlu lozalo, uzophendula uthi, “Kuyini lokho? Qhubeka futhi uchaze. UJesu noJosefa abahlobene. Awukwazi lokho? Ingabe uJesu angaba nalo uhlu lozalo? Kungenzeka kanjani ukuthi uJesu abe nokhokho? Kungenzeka kanjani ukuthi abe yinzalo yomuntu? Inyama yakhe yazalwa uMariya; uMoya Wakhe uMoya kaNkulunkulu, hhayi umoya womuntu. UJesu uyiNdodana kaNkulunkulu ethandekayo, ngakho angaba nalo uhlu lozalo? Ngesikhathi esemhlabeni akazange abe yilungu lesintu, ngakho kungenzeka kanjani ukuthi abe nohlu lozalo?” Lapho uhlaziya uhlu lozalo futhi uchaze ngokucacile iqiniso, uhlanganyele ngalokho okuqondile, lowo muntu uzomangala. Abanye abantu bazocaphuna eBhayibhelini bese bekubuza, “uJesu wayenohlu lozalo. Ingabe uNkulunkulu wakho wanamuhla unalo yini uhlu lozalo?” Uzobatshela ukuqonda kwakho okuyiqiniso kakhulu. Ngale ndlela, ukuqonda kwakho kuzoba sekuthole iphumela. Eqinisweni, uJesu akahlobene nhlobo noJosefa futhi akahlobene ngisho no-Abrahama. Okuwukuphela ukuthi uJesu wazalwa kwa-Israyeli. Kodwa uNkulunkulu akayena umIsrayeli noma inzalo yama-Israyeli. Ngoba nje uJesu wazalwa kwa-Israyeli, akusho ukuthi uNkulunkulu unguNkulunkulu wama-Israyeli kuphela. Kwaba kuphela ngokwenjongo yomsebenzi Wakhe okwenza wathatha lesi sinyathelo sokuba abe semzimbeni wenyama Ngokwakhe. UNkulunkulu unguNkulunkulu wayo yonke indalo esendaweni yonke. Impressive SEKIRO Speedrun Cuts Through All Bosses in Under 4 Hours

     Halt, you there! Have you played SEKIRO? I’m Famitsu’s Kitaguchi Toho Nifun. As part of a special project, Famitsu streamed a speedrun (a style of play where you try to complete a game as quickly as possible) of SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE on Niconico Live as well as YouTube Live. I love watching speedruns, so I figured I need to give it a try myself occasionally (previous to this I did Romancing SaGa 2 but failed to clear it within 6 hours).
  With that out of the way, the regulations for this speedrun were as follows: 
  •In the first run-through, defeat all the bosses/mini-bosses up to Sword Saint Isshin Ashina.
•Defeat one Shichimen Warrior and one Headless.
•Don’t need to defeat Great Serpent or Great Colored Carp.
•To make it a smooth playthrough, use Sekiro’s power-ups actively (and take detours depending on the situation).
  Immediately after beginning this speedrun, I suddenly died after falling from a high place, was killed by Leader Shigenori Yamauchi and had a mess of a time, but I found my rhythm after defeating the tutorial boss Genichiro Ashina and somehow managed to clear the game within four hours. The original plan was to clear it within six, but I actually managed to surprise even myself with how fast it went. Practicing seriously paid off. I sure am glad for that.

  By the way, the video we took was my fifth consecutive playthrough. I didn’t do anything too incredible in the video (there are more skilled players who could clear it faster), but on the other hand I did use Prosthetic Tools a lot in order to clear the game, so there should be a lot you can use as reference for your own gameplay.
