In the Heights Adapts Musical Version

Before In The Heights was released as a film, it was a Broadway musical with a dynamic evolutionary history. Its first draft as a student musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda in 1999, took place in his old neighborhood, Washington Heights, a Latino community in Upper Manhattan. The musical numbers combined features from classic Broadway orchestral music with Latin salsa and hip-hop.

Before it opened on Broadway for the first time in 2008, In the Heights underwent multiple revision cycles, during which Miranda clarified the plot. By the time it premiered, it had grown into a story that celebrated the Washington Heights community as a whole, not just a handful of residents. During its run, In the Heights won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Before the film adaptation of In The Heights began preproduction, a couple of studios developed screenplays but did not proceed to production. The film rights were reacquired by Miranda, and subsequently a new version of the script was written by Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes. That script attracted Jon M Chu as director, and the newly repackaged film was offered to Hollywood. Warner Bros. won a competitive bidding war and put the film into production in 2018. The film’s story focuses on a love triangle between Usnavi, a bodega owner; Benny, his best friend; and Nina, Benny's love interest, who struggles to adjust to college life. The film also incorporates contemporary issues that gained prominence since the musical’s release, like gentrification and the experiences of undocumented immigrants.

Wee Hawkin Willie is the pianist at Rory's Shangri-La Café. Everyone seems to agree that he doesn't play the piano that well, and he constantly thinks he's come up with a new hit (such as "Forget Your Troubles, Come On Get Happy" what Isaac "Goodshot" Kelly told Trixie and "Hit Me Baby, One More Time" when Rory asks for more coffee), but doubts himself and says, "Nah."

Morgan Matthews is the younger sister of Cory and Eric, the older sister of Joshua, and the only daughter to Amy and Alan. Mainly used for comedic purposes, the character of Morgan is usually annoying to Cory, and seems closer to Eric. She was initially played by Lily Nicksay, but was replaced by Lindsay Ridgeway in season 3. Throughout the series, it becomes clear that Morgan is a good singer, as shown in Better Than the Average Cory and Shallow Boy.

Boy Meets World premiered in 1993 with Lily Nicksay playing Morgan Matthews, the little sister to Ben Savage’s Cory Matthews. She continued the role through the end of the second season, bidding adieu in the 1995 season finale “Home.” Morgan was nowhere to be seen the first half of the third season, finally returning in 1996’s “A Kiss Is More Than a Kiss” with Lindsay Ridgeway playing the character. The show nodded to the absence, as Cory told his sister, “Morgan, long time, no see!” and she responded, “Yeah, that was the longest timeout I’ve ever had.”

The Evolution of the Directors Guild of America

In the early days of Hollywood, a visionary group of directors sought proper acknowledgment and creative freedom, leading to the establishment of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) on January 13, 1936. Just four days later, 100 directors had eagerly joined, setting the stage for the DGA's impactful journey.

King Vidor became the first president, and the Guild expanded to include assistant directors in 1938, by that time representing an impressive 95 percent of film directors and assistant directors in Hollywood. Frank Capra assumed the presidency in 1939, the year in which the DGA received blanket studio recognition, affirming directors' creative roles and establishing vital working conditions.

The DGA continued to mark milestones, introducing the Directors Guild of America Awards and negotiating its first television contract, recognizing directors' revenue rights. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, a pivotal figure, earned the first Feature Film Directing Award.

In 1964, the DGA introduced a Bill of Creative Rights, solidifying directors' entitlements, including the coveted “Director's Cut.” The 1987 industry-wide strike, lasting a mere three hours, marked a turning point, leading to three-year freelance contracts despite studio pressure.

Under Arthur Hiller’s presidency in 1989 the Guild reached over 9,000 members, moved into a state of the art Hollywood headquarters, and continued its advocacy for moral rights. The DGA’s rich history reflects a relentless pursuit of recognition and fair treatment for directors in the dynamic landscape of film and television.
