hi hi i just wanted to come here and say that i'm extremely excited for this IF!! i was hooked from the very first time i saw the intro post and it quickly became one of my most anticipated reads. can't wait till it comes out <3
any fun facts you'd like to share about the ROs? :D
Thank you so much!!! I’m so honored to hear that 💞.
Kade/Kara:
Had been in a relationship with you since high school (the later years) but, before that, they were in a relationship with M. (A little bit more context on M’s quote in the pinned post.)
When they were first told that you were missing, and probably dead, they didn’t want to believe it. They were an absolute wreck for two months (refusing to leave the house, crying, etc). They had to be stopped from looking for you in the woods multiple times.
Has a major fear of rollercoasters because of the heights but absolutely loves going rock climbing…
Still wears their wedding ring around their neck, right next to yours as that was one of the only things they found of yours, and refuses to take it off. No matter what.
On your anniversary they visit your grave and watch your wedding video on their phone… reminiscing about happier times when they still had you by their side.
Michael/Margot:
Is a doctor within Aurora and they absolutely love their job. They work with children and have the gentlest touch (one that the MC isn’t really expecting because of how they are with you).
Goes on a run with their dog every single morning (when their schedule allows it) to allow her to stretch her legs. It’s one of the highlights of their day.
Sings along to old show tunes that play on the radio as they’re headed to work every morning. Tapping along with the beat as a bright smile pulls on their lips.
Has a semi-distant relationship with their parents/family for a variety of reasons but they’re not one to share all that much about it.
Their favorite snack is popcorn and they commonly eat it instead of having a nutritious meal (which they’re well aware is bad for them).
Blaine/Blaire:
Is a Pre-K Teacher within Aurora and has an absolute blast creating lesson plans for their students. They have a lot of the art their students have made for them framed in their house.
Is a frequent diner at the local diner within Aurora; always ordering the same thing (a cheeseburger and fries with a strawberry shake). It’s something they always used to do with you.
Used to visit your grave every Sunday in order to pay respects and tell you about their week and what they were excited for in the upcoming one— even though all they really wanted was for you to be there with them.
Loves the taste of cinnamon and gets really excited when their mother makes them cinnamon pie (a childhood favorite).
Still keeps a picture of you on their desk (both at work and at home) because they never want to forget what you look like. And it makes them think that they’re not truly alone.
Wren/Wynn:
Has a personal connection with this case which is part of the reason they want it to finally be solved.
Has an unhealthy addiction to trashy romance books that they’ll commonly read within their hotel room whenever they’re bored or the case gets too stressful.
Is an absolute terrible cook but they’re an amazing baker (scones that you’ll never be able to believe).
Is a highly decorated agent within the FBI and a highly decorated soldier from the Marines. They take honor and duty to a whole other level.
Has a cat back in DC that they absolutely adore more than anything. It’s an old little man that they’ve named Fiji (as they named him after the only bottle of water they had on them when rescuing him).
Nicholas/Natalie:
Is a complete recluse but they’re always kind to people whenever they get lost near their house. Helping them back to Aurora with Beau happily trotting by their side.
Lives out on the lake with their next neighbor over two miles away; it’s something that made them choose their house to begin with. As they didn’t want to deal with the hustle and bustle of living in town.
Is very active; taking Beau running, biking, hiking, kayaking, etc. Whatever N does you bet your ass that Beau is going to be loyally by their side for it all.
Loves to go bird watching whenever the season comes around and they also love laying out on their back deck and watching the stars; having memorized the constellations long ago.
Is very goofy whenever they get comfortable around people and is a fairly genuine person with the few people that they trust. It’s just hard for them to get there.

Lost and Found
So!! This is a story I wrote with mine and @serenitydusk‘s characters a while back now. I wanted to post it because it was really good, something I’m proud of. ^w^
WARNINGS!!!! - blood, angst, torture(mild)
my character’s : Balthazar, Chevelle, Andras, Sydney, Nicholas, Arcturus (Arc), Warrick
@serenitydusk‘s characters: Dusk, Ash, Roan
Tagging: @no-need-to-apply @thejellyflux @sunrisehoneybee @junepop45
Four months. It had been four months and still… nothing. Arc was still gone. Four months ago when he had vanished, it had been a normal day. Kian and Wren had come to visit, all for the world newly in love and it was infectious, everyone had been in the best mood and Annwn.. was normal.
It wasn't until the evening fell and everyone in their ever growing family gathered at Dusk's home for a meal that.. something felt wrong. Roan kept rubbing his chest, it ached and he naturally looked to Arc who.. wasn't there? In fact it had been hours since he had decided to go train and Roan excused himself to head out after his male. As if sensing that he was worried, Ash headed out with him. He tried to tell himself that the hot headed flame wielder that stole his heart had once again just.. lost track of time. But his footsteps spurred on faster.
The training ground was a bit secluded.. and usually close enough to the house to warrant being safe.. but what Ash and Roan found there was a warzone. There were bits of charred earth, trees and grass. The discarded weapons and clothes said that Arc had been here but.. one guard was dead near the path, having most likely been keeping an eye on the male. Ash claimed that it had been an ambush.. the guard taken out first then… whoever it was fought.. and took Arc. They must have excelled at concealing magic for no one to have sensed it.
Roan didn't really remember much about what happened after that. He had been so enraged, so filled with panic and pain and anger that Arc was in danger and maybe hurt that.. he blacked out for a moment… It was raining when he came too. Ash calmed him down gently and told him that he had to be strong.
~~~
That was four months ago… and they had pulled all they had, every resource, every single favor.. to find him. Roan was exhausted.. mentally, physically, and emotionally drained.. they even went to his father which proved in vain as well. It wore on everyone, Ash and Kian widened their search to cover every inch of Annwn though.. if Arc was there then Dusk should have sensed him but there were always blind spots. Nic and Andras were putting out favors and calling in more, checking with all they knew in the human world to see if any leads turned up. How the hell anyone got into Annwn and took out a member of the royal guard and then left without a word of it… was a mystery that had royally pissed off Ash and Dusk. They had done… all they could...
It was exhausting..
Roan was sure he looked as shit as he felt when he sat at the kitchen table, too early to be fully awake -not that he slept much, if at all- but also too late to even try heading back to bed. Hair a mess, his normally bright blue gaze dulled to an almost angry black color, and he was pale. The dark circles under his eyes didn’t add to help any of that. He cradled a cup of coffee, watching the steam and not caring that it didn’t have an ounce of sugar or creamer. He had been so zoned that it almost startled him to have Dusk pad barefoot into the room, or heard that she had spoken to him.
“I’m fine.” Was that even his own voice? Did it matter? He had to contact Sydney.. See if she had found a proper locating spell and-
“Roan.” Dusk stood in his way as he stood and abandoned his coffee. “You need to rest. You do no good to him if you push yourself too far.” Her voice was a gentle scolding and full of concern and.. Anger bubbled up.
“I said I’m fine.” He didn’t need to be coddled, but he could see the stubbornness in her face.
“...Roan.. I know..-”
‘I SAID I’M FINE!” He roared, the coffee in his cup and the water in the kettle blasting out in a hot scalding spray that both of them were taken off guard with but Dusk had manages to freeze the spray before it hit them. There was silence… Roan’s shoulders hunching in as he realized.. He’d just yelled at Dusk… “...I’m… Gods.. Dusk.. I’m sorry…” He choked and then she was holding him as he buckled and sobbed. She held him as he broke and when he was done, he was half in her lap on the floor of the kitchen as she stroked his hair. He and Dusk were close and often with them, touch was comfort.
“There is no need to apologize Roan.. We’re all here for you and none of us will stop looking for him… but you need rest..” There was no arguing that tone and he was too tired to do so. Another presence filled the kitchen and Chevelle appeared from shadow and darkness, curling around them. He nuzzled Dusk and then scooped Roan up like he was no more than a doll. A part of him wished he had the strength to protest but instead he curled into the soft black fur and felt himself being carried away. He was asleep before he made it to his bed.
~~
It was… strange. To realize you were most definitely dreaming but.. Not really knowing how or why you know it. Roan stood in the middle of a long hall. It was it ...somehow and there were doors for as long as he could see down either direction. He didn’t really know if he should pick a way to go or not but before he could, a familiar black beast rose up, white skull materializing to stare at him. Ah. That’s how he knew he was dreaming.
“Chev..? Why are we in the dreamscape?” He asked, moving closer. Chev hunched so that he could be closer to the siren.
“You needed rest… and I… need to show you.” He spoke low and gravely. Show him? Show him what? Even in the dream he seemed to feel tired but Chev motioned for him to follow down the hall and the world around them changed. It was colder here… darker. Chev stopped and Roan looked around the area. He couldn’t see anythi-
He froze, heart thudding as he saw the male. At first.. He had thought it was Arc.. but the stubble and the bulky shoulders….
“Warrik?” He gasped and the ghost flickered, a tired smile crossing his face. Arc’s older brother was faded, nothing like how he had appeared before and it sent dread through him.
“We don’t have much time….” Chevelle said, causing more panic to fill him. A soothing warmth wrapped around him as the beast hugged him. “It took… far too long.. This place.. the in-between.. The space between dream… and death…” The words did nothing to reassure Roan but Warrick flickered again and spoke up.
“Roan… They’re killing him.. Slowly..” He said, his voice faint and it was all Roan could do to hold onto Chevelle as he shook.
“Who? Tell me where he is!” Roan’s voice was hoarse. “My clan.. Like the beast said, we don’t have much time. I will show you where it is.. I can give you the knowledge but you must hurry.. He’s… he’s weak.” Warrik reached out and with an icy cold touch, images and knowledge filled his brain. In an instant, images and thoughts that weren’t his own filled his head. He knew how to get to Arc and… oh gods.. Oh fuckin gods what had they done to him...? The next instant, Warrik pulled back, eyes clearly weak and filled with sorrow. “I wish… I could have kept you from seeing that.. But he won’t last much longer.” Chevelle pulled on Roan and the world began to fade.
“Warrik! Tell Arc! I’ll find him...” and like that, Roan was gasping awake in his bed, Chevelle perched like some great cat at the foot, watching him. A million things wracked his brain as he tore from the bed to get Dressed. Chevelle’s voice made him pause.
“I am sorry… that it took so long… to find him.” A sad smile graced Roan’s features.
“But you found him Chev. Thank you.” He said, pushing past to find Dusk and realizing he’d slept through the whole day.. Though it had seemed like only minutes….
~~
Finding where the hidden village was cloaked was fairly easy, the tip of northern Ireland and blanketed with a field of magic so thick that they had all but skipped it twice. Once they found it however… the hard part was getting in. Roan explained to Nic, Balthazar, Andras, Ash, Dusk and Kian that they needed blood from the clan to open the gate. They didn’t have time to weed out one of the followers that could be.. literally anywhere… but they luckily didn’t have to.
“Nic.. what do you remember of your father..?” Roan stared at the vampire lord and Nic frowned.. But quickly caught on.
“To be honest.. I don’t really. But My mother said my use of magic came from him...Are you saying my bloodline is tied to that clan? Will it work if I’m.. a vampire? From what I hear they hunt our kind.” He mused, one hand smoothing over Dusk’s almost as if it were compulsion. The stress in the room was high.
“We can only hope. What choice do we have..?” Balthazar answered but Roan clenched his fist.
“I won’t lose him.” Roan said, his voice held no argument, the ache in his chest an almost permanent fixture. Silence was his answer, a steel resolve set among them.
~~
Chaos.. Utter chaos. The humans were.. Well equipped. They wielded magic and weapons, the air stunk of death and iron and blood and… worse. However well equipped they were, none of them could have prepared for the onslaught of the fae, vampire, and demon alike that paved the way for Roan and Dusk. They made it, the underground bunker area that smelled like a furnace and felt like hell lay behind the doors. And when they finally came into the dank blackness….
Neither of them recognized the man chained to the concrete and steel. “Arc….” that broken whisper left Roan’s lips. If Warrik hadn’t shown him this image… he’d have sworn that man wasn’t his mate… but it was and his heart knew it.
On his knees in the middle of an Iron contraption, they had pierced his hands and bolted him to a concrete block. There were chains connected to a collar around his neck that also served as a muzzle over his mouth and nose… and his hair shaved off to reveal dead eyes that didn’t even blink when they entered. The worst… was the machines they had hooked to him as he took labored breaths, skin ablaze and the heat was… suffocating. Dusk could feel how weak he was and.. Gods if they didn’t get him out now he wouldn’t make it another night. She wasn’t in Annwn… and she was surrounded by metal that clogged her throat but she pushed it away and stepped forward. She called earth to her the land that was Ireland… and it answered, rolling and cracking the stones, she reached out to Ash so he could aide in quelling the fire that Arc wielded.
Arc… couldn’t remember how to think.. All he felt was pain.. All he knew.. No… he knew he had to stay alive.. He had.. He had to stay strong.. For Roan… Roan. he heard voices, felt more pain surge through him as he was moved, his body protested and he screamed, fire pushing out only to be quenched.. Stilled. It felt.. Oh it felt familiar.
“Arc! Baby.. stay with me.. Listen to me.. Breathe..” Oh.. oh that voice. He tried to move, to fight, He had to get to..
Everything went black.
~~
Days flew by… six to be exact, since they got him out of there. He was.. Roan hung his head,, swallowing harshly. He was still asleep, washed up and mostly… mostly healed. Four months he’d been in their hands and the damage… looking back up, his first reaction to make sure Arc was still breathing...but what caught his eye was a pair of pale ones staring back.
Arc was sure that he’d died this time.. Roan.. Roan was there so close. His vision blurred and he tried to move, to wipe his eyes but he was so slow, so sluggish. And it didn’t matter because in a heartbeat, his love was on him, cupping his face and rubbing the tears away.
“Mo chridhe. Arc..” he sighed, clinging to him carefully, as if he might shatter like a dream. Arc could only tremble, grasping weakly at him.
“Roan…” He whispered, voice hoarse and rough and deeper than the last he’d remembered. “Am.. am I in heaven…?” he asked. There was a second where he watched pain and joy streak across Roan’s face, tears falling and his love probably didn’t even notice. Those words had been the first thing Arc had said when Roan found him washed ashore.
“No.. No mo chridhe, you’re alive..” Roan moved Arc’s scarred hand to his chest, feeling the weight and the thump of his heart. “See?” his voice broke and then he was sobbing into his boyfriend’s arms, Arc holding him as tight as he could.
“I’m sorry… I’m so.. I never..” Arc shushed him, his own body trembling as he cried silently. He didn’t have the voice right now to tell him that the only thing that had kept him alive that whole time was the thought of him, the ache in his chest that let him know Roan was looking for him. The two ended up in the same bed, touching each other and pressing kisses to every inch of skin. Roan helped him drink water and Dusk had cried when she came to check on him. Now Roan ran a hand over the fuzz that covered his head instead of the wild mane of golden hair.
“.....I’ll grow it back…” Arc’s voice was soft. It was timid and Roan knew that tone… it would take a while to heal from what was done to him but the first thing he wanted to remedy.
“You’re beautiful Arc..” He lifted his chin so he could see those pale eyes. He could see the disbelief there. “You are beautiful to me.. Always… and mine.. I won’t let you go again.
McMansion Hell Does Architectural Theory (Part 3): British Palladianism
Hello Friends! Today we’re going to talk about a rather short-lived movement in late 17th, early-18th century architecture: British Palladianism, which is v “Palladio is great and I, an aristocrat, will only pay you if you design in reference to his style.” Of course it goes deeper than that, so, let’s begin!
Background
In previous installations of this series, we’ve talked about the Italians and the French, but what the heck was happening in Britain all this time? Well, the answer is:
Seriously. The dang Brits were at war all the time - colonializing everything, sinking all of Spain’s ships, creating their own cool church bc their king wanted a son etc.
Because of all this dang war, architecture in Britain for a long time was a messy hodgepodge of stylistic elements. Examples range from Henry VIII’s Windsor Castle Gatehouse (OG Tudor, though ostensibly Gothic) to the more classically-oriented but still rather Gothic Old Somerset House (completed in 1552) (demolished). According to Mallgrave’s Architectural Theory (a great anthology), most of the classically inspired elements on pre-17th Century British buildings can be traced to Italian or French artisans. Oh well.
Early English Classicism (Late 17th Century)
It wasn’t until the 17th century (v late) that classicism became a big deal in England. The first real-deal English classicist was the badass-ly named Inigo Jones, who actually went to Italy for a year (1613-14) where he encountered the work of Palladio for the first time -- which, needless to say blew his damn mind. Jones became the first British architect to have designed buildings in accordance to Vitruvian teachings and classical proportions.
The Dude Jones got into architecture through a weird angle: he was first a prominent set and costume designer for several English theatres. His Italian journey proved fruitful for him career-wise - many of the higher-ups were impressed with Jones’ knowledge of Italian aesthetics, and he was shortly appointed as the Surveyor to the Prince of Wales, before hella upgrading to being Surveyor of the King’s Works in 1615.
Jones’ earliest known architectural work (appropriately called Queen’s House), built for James I’s wife, Anne (who died before it was finished), was the first ever classically styled building in England. I mean, it’s great - just look at it.
While Jones would go on to design a smattering of buildings, a great deal of his work was lost both in the English Civil War and in the 1666 Great Fire of London. Despite these minor setbacks, Jones’ is still considered to be among England’s greatest architects whose influence would span two centuries worth of British architectural technique.
Get it? It’s lit? Because half of his stuff got torched? I’m sorry.
As far as architectural theory goes during this era of budding classicism, the closest clue we have is the work of Henry Wotton, the British ambassador to Venice, who got so hellaciously sloshed on Italian architecture while he was there that he decided to write a book about it called The Elements of Architecture (1624), outlining his special interpretation of classical architecture.
Wotton’s book was mostly a translation of Vitruvius with a little bit of Renaissance thought (a la Alberti and Palladio) thrown in. The most well-known snippet is his translation of the Vitruvian triad as “firmness, commodity, and delight” - an architectural catchphrase that often finds its way into contemporary architectural histories, though more accurate translations have been proposed:
Change in this line of thought came with Jones’ later successor, Christopher Wren. Unlike Jones who was rather rigorous in his classicism, Wren was a bit more...capricious. In fact, he even built in the Gothic style at the end of his long career (the dude built 45 churches alone) - a move that would have likely put Perrault and Blondel both in an early grave.
Dude doesn’t even need the sunglasses, he’s throwing so much shade in this pic.
Wren’s ideas about architecture, encapsulated in his Tracts on Architecture (1670s) are varied. In Tract I, Wren opens up with the ballsy af statement: “Architecture has its political Use,” - that is, buildings form the national identity of a country and inspire patriotism amongst its citizens. This itself is a hot take, but it gets even hotter.
Like Perrault, Wren’s ideas about beauty are split into what he calls “natural” and “customary” beauty. Natural beauty consists of geometry, aka Proportions, following in the Platonic tradition® of an absolute beauty or harmony, inherently pleasing to all of us. Customary beauty, however, is more vague - Wren describes it as: “the use of our Senses to those Objects which are usually pleasing to us for other Causes, as Familiarity or particular Inclination breeds a Love to Things not in themselves lovely.”
Basically, we like certain things for some dumb reason like feelings and stuff.
In his second Tract, Wren gripes about architecture being “too strick and pedantick.” This makes sense, because Wren was really into blending a variety of interesting styles together, which was perhaps problematic to some.
Enter the Moralists
One person who was particularly sick of Wren’s sh*t was Anthony Ashley Cooper, Third Earl of Shaftesbury, who, in addition to being an Earl, was also a writer and philosopher. (He was notably taught at a young age by none other than John Locke, the guy you learned about in Civics class once.)
Shaftesbury hated (!!!) the Baroque stylings of Wren’s late work, as well as the next generation of architects including John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, deeming the pair’s Baroque-leaning Blenheim Palace “a new palace spoilt.” In fact, he wrote a very amusingly scathing essay in 1712 basically saying that Britain was literally *THE BEST* at all of the other arts except for architecture, after which he proceeds to take a huge dump all over the architecture of the day.
Photo by Derova, (CC-BY-2.0)
Shaftesbury tried to sniff out a philosophical basis for Platonic thought regarding absolute beauty and harmonic proportions. What he came up with is essentially moralism, claiming that in order to be able to perceive the naturally good and beautiful ideas in art, one must themselves be naturally good and beautiful on the inside.™ Good taste comes from good inner resolve® to be true to what we know is true beauty and not be swayed by the evils of fashion™ blah blah blah.
The Height of British Palladianism
This line of thought continued within what was now deemed British Palladianism (a movement whose discourse consisted mostly of wealthy Earls tutting at each other). British Palladianism saw several architects (Colin Campbell, Nicholas Du Bois, and William Kent, specifically) launch their own careers by releasing translations or new editions of works by Vitruvius, Palladio, and Jones, respectively with some pithy bits in the introductions haranguing the “ridiculous mixture of Gothick and Roman” of the previous generation thrown in for good measure.
Like all movements, the Palladian movement had its own shadowy figurehead, who funded the work of several of the architects working in the 1720s - Richard Boyle, Third Earl of Burlington.
Burlington was extremely wealthy, and spent most of his time being a total dilettante architect, traveling to Italy to collect manuscripts of Palladio and the like. In fact, Burlington fired Colin Campbell (the English Vitruvius!!) from working on his Piccadilly Villa because apparently Campbell’s classicism was **just not pure enough** for the good Earl, who decided he should just build his damn villa himself.
Burlington’s ruthless aesthetic commitment had a huge impact on the contemporary architects of the day, most of whom he fired. Of the ones he did not fire (aka he did not hire them in the first place), Robert Morris, the most prolific writer of the Palladian movement, is perhaps the most significant. Morris’s work chronicles not only the dawn and spirit of the movement but also its decline.
Morris’s 1728 essay “An Essay in Defense of Ancient Architecture” is about exactly what you would expect:
(((Tutting intensifies)))
The essay of course devolves from tutting critique to legit 17th century fanfiction:
I-Inigo-sama!!! <3
The End of an Era, I Guess
Jokes aside (yours truly used to ship historical figures back in my 7th grade fanfiction days and is not proud), Morris would take a rather different tone in 1739, in an essay commonly cited as a hint to the movement’s end, “An Essay upon Harmony.”
This essay breaks away from the Platonic ideas of absolute beauty, and instead breaks beauty up into several different categories - a relativist aesthetics coming from a contemporary movement (mostly in landscape architecture) called the picturesque, or picturesque theory, which will be the subject of next week’s post.
“In Harmony,” writes Morris, “there are three general Divisions, which may be distinguish’d by the Terms, Ideal, Oral, and Ocular.”
The Ideal is of course numbers and, duh, proportions. Oral harmony is how things are related to each other, with a v Plato allusion to musical harmony. Old news, right?
But it’s Ocular harmony that offers a glimpse into what will ultimately be a much more powerful movement, spanning (serious, not dilettante) philosophy, art, and of course architecture: the picturesque and the sublime, supported by John Locke & Co.’s empiricism (but we’ll get to that).
Ocular harmony is the harmony of nature in its natural state - both “Animate” (animals, insects, also beauty and perfection, apparently) and “inanimate” (hills, woods, valleys, scenery - “noble, rural, and pleasing.”)
Morris’ ideas are ones of subjectivity, blind sensation to what is and is not lovely, rather than dictated ideas of aesthetic morality. He later goes on to say that in architecture, “The Proportion should be with respect to the Situation; the Dress, Decoration, and Materials should be adapted to the Propriety and Elegance of the Situation and Convenience…”
If that’s not the antithesis to Burlington’s objective classicist purity, I don’t know what is. And so, the bell finally tolls on British Palladianism.
Santa kidnapping children and murderous mice were par for the course in the Victorian-era Christmas card tradition.
In the 19th century, before festive Christmas cards became the norm, Victorians put a darkly humorous and twisted spin on their seasonal greetings. Some of the more popular subjects included anthropomorphic frogs, bloodthirsty snowmen and dead birds.
“May yours be a joyful Christmas,” reads one card from the late 1800s, along with an illustration of a dead robin. Another card shows an elderly couple laughing maniacally as they lean out a second-story window and dump water onto a group of carolers below. “Wishing you a jolly Christmas,” it says beneath the image.
Morality and a strict code of social conduct embodied the time period of Queen Victoria’s reign (1837-1901), but the Victorians still had their fair share of questionable practices. They thought nothing of posing with the dead or robbing graves and selling the bodies. Their holiday customs evolved with just as much curiosity. Clowns, insects and even the Devil himself had a place in early holiday fanfare.
“In the 19th century, the iconography of Christmas had not been fully developed as it is now,” says Penne Restad, a lecturer in American history at the University of Texas in Austin and the author of Christmas in America.
Printing and Postage Reforms Trigger Christmas Card Tradition
The first Christmas card, circa 1843.
Christmas didn’t gain momentum until the mid-1800s. In 1843, the same year that English author Charles Dickens created A Christmas Carol, prominent English educator and society member, Sir Henry Cole, commissioned the first Christmas card. Even with an impressive print run of 1,000 cards (of which 21 exist today), full-fledged manufacturing remained only a sideline to the more established trade in playing cards, notepaper and envelopes, needle-box and linen labels and valentines, explains Samantha Bradbeer, archivist and historian for Hallmark Cards, Inc. It took several decades for the exchange of holiday greetings to catch on, both in England and the United States.
“Several factors coincided to produce a broad acceptance of greeting cards as a popular commodity,” says Bradbeer, including a higher literacy rate and new consumerism stemming from increasing levels of discretionary income. But postal reform and advances in printing technologies were the two factors that really pushed Christmas cards into the mainstream.
The Postage Act of 1839 helped regulate British postage rates and democratize mail delivery. A year later, with the passage of the Uniform Penny Post law, anyone in England could send something in the mail for just one penny. Then, in October 1870, right before the holiday season, the British government introduced the halfpenny, making mail service affordable for nearly all levels of society. Standardized rates and delivery soon followed in America.
At the same time, wood cuts and other cumbersome printing processes gave way to the mass production of images. The first mass printing of Christmas cards occurred in the 1860s. By 1870, when printing could be done for as little as a few pennies per dozen, hundreds of European card manufacturers were producing cards to sell at home and to the American public. German immigrant Louis Prang is credited with popularizing the Christmas card in the United States through his Boston lithography business.
Fringe Cards Featured Dark and Bizarre Imagery
19th-century Victorians put a dark and twisted spin on their seasonal greetings. Some of the more popular cover models included anthropomorphic frogs and insects.
As the popularity of Christmas cards grew, Victorians demanded more novelty. “By 1885, unique and even bizarre cards with silk fringe, glittered attachments and mechanical movements were popular, but the more common Christmas card motifs related to flora and fauna, seasonal vignettes and landscapes,” Bradbeer says.
Among the bizarre were a large collection of dark and outlandish designs. An army of black ants is shown attacking an army of red ants on one holiday greeting with the caption, “The compliments of the season,” printed on a tiny flag. Sullen and brooding children, random lobsters and Christmas pudding with human elements made frequent appearances on Christmas cards printed in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
But why did Victorians exchange such eccentric holiday cards, and what do they mean?
“I think it’s important to understand that ‘festive’ cards as we know them now are very much a 20th-century phenomena,” says Katie Brown, assistant curator of social history at York Castle Museum. According to Brown, although some of the history is lost, designs were made to serve as conversation pieces as much as they were made to celebrate the season. Many Victorian Christmas cards became parlor art or people added them to their scrapbook collections.
Greeting cards, in general, are linked socially, economically and politically to the culture, period and place of their origin and use. “Sentiments and designs that may seem unusual today were often considered signs of good fortune, while others poked fun at superstitions,” says Bradbeer.
Folk customs influenced the design of many Victorian Christmas cards. In British folklore, for example, robins and wrens are considered sacred species. John Grossman, author of Christmas Curiosities: Old, Dark and Forgotten Christmas, writes that images of these dead birds on Christmas cards may have been “bound to elicit Victorian sympathy and may reference common stories of poor children freezing to death at Christmas.”
“I believe the cultural interest in fairies, secret places and strange creatures that developed, maybe beginning with seances, elves and so on, in the Victorian era may have something to do with some of the fantastical Christmas cards,” says Restad.
St. Nicholas Teams Up With the Devil
A German postcard reading "Gruss vom Krampus," meaning "Greetings from Krampus."
An English legend popular during the Victorian era said that St. Nicholas recruited the Devil to help with his deliveries. Together, they determined which children had been naughty or nice. The Devil, who appeared under various guises, kidnapped the disobedient kids and beat them with a stick. Santa is the creepy antihero on a variety of Victorian-era holiday cards, where he can be seen peeking through windows and spying on children. The Devil is disguised as Krampus on some, making off on sleds and in automobiles with the children deemed naughty.
Today, despite the rise of electronic communication and social media, billions of Christmas cards are bought and exchanged around the world each year.
“As artifacts of popular culture revealing graphic, literary and social trends, they provide both visual pleasure and important historic information,” says Bradbeer, even when that information is symbolized by dead birds.
" As much as I'd love to say I'm someone whose fully capable of surviving an apocalypse alone. That would be a HUGE LIE. I. CANNOT. Survive this phenomenon alone, but while I was unfortunate enough to start off on my own, I was lucky enough to come across the people I'd spend the entirety of this world ending event with. " ⇁ D.R.T
WALLFLOWERS AT WORLDS END :
— Depicts the story of an early teen enduring the kickstart of an apocalypse in Canada, aiming to locate his family and surprisingly coming across the closest thing to that.
SETTING :
— Takes place in early 2000s, Pre-apocalyptic and mid apocalyptic circumstances
TAGS :
— Zombie apocalypse, cannibalism, illegal activity, drunk driving, murder, manslaughter, blood, violence, gore, mutilation, dismemberment, decapitation, implosion, major character injury, body modifications, body horror, underage drinking, underage smoking, drug use, implied/referenced overdose attempt, implied/referenced suicide, implied/referenced rape/non-con, implied/referenced infidelity, psychological torture, physical torture, minor character death, teenagers, teenagers being stupid, teenagers being teenagers, angst, slowburn, fluff, found families, platonic physical affection, lgbtq, original story - freeform, original characters
REGULATIONS :
- Avoid reposting the story without credits, especially if it's another app, please do not claim this as yours . I've worked hard on creating the very base of this book.
- Please at all costs avoid sexualizing the underage characters which involve most if not all of the main cast, this includes but is not limited to inappropriate artworks, nsfw fanfictions, explicit shipping, etcetera.
- Refrain from shipping the characters without considering what I am about to express as the author, forcing characters together out of the canon and confirmed isn't something I wish to occur, though I accept it to be inevitable. Keep in mind that the characters are mirrors to real life people that I, personally know, and I hope for you to respect my wishes, and them as well.
- Awfully specific however blatantly shaming or mocking my story is unacceptable, especially if it involves the label cringe, I dont know, it just seems quite unecessary to single out 'abnormal' behavior in teens. Just, why? No one asked you to do it, and I'm certainly not asking you to, so don't go in my inbox/notes just to say something about a character being weird.
- I feel as if these rules won't cover everything, so I'm going to be updating this in the middle of creating the story.
