Summary: You attend a party with Nicholas and he gets wrapped up in his conversations, he wasn’t intentionally ignoring you although it feels that way.

Nicholas had been ignoring you for more than half of the party now. It had been three hours of watching him work the room, mingling with Hollywood executives and shaking hands with everyone important, meanwhile, you were standing against the wall, all alone.

You grew tired of nursing your Shirley Temple and wanted to leave. Your eye searched for him, it didn’t take long to find him. His laugh was distinct and you could hear it a mile away.

He made eye contact with you, giving a sympathetic smile as he could tell you were growing exhausted waiting around for him.

He always made this promise to you, “come with me! This time will be different!”

It never was.

Nicholas has good intentions of course but you weren’t an actress and had nothing in common with the people around you. You weren’t in the industry at all, and that made it easier for you to fall into the background. Nicholas was too blinded by the Hollywood lights to even notice.

“Stop, please! I’m sorry!” He followed you out of the crowded party. He had only whispered the words loud enough for the two of you to hear, the last thing he wanted to do was cause a scene.

The thought of losing you made his stomach turn, his entire face was boiling and red as he was quick on your heels. You had only been dating for six months but he intended to make it last far longer than that.

The intense sense of panic was sinking in, he had done it again. He had isolated the one person who truly understood him, for a night of fake laughing and strategic handshakes and the guilt was setting in.

You heard him but ignored him anyway, starting to walk down the street. You were unsure of where you were going, considering you hadn’t driven there and you had no idea where you were.

“Baby- please!” His voice was louder, garnering the attention of the people in the front yard of the party. Nicholas hated making a scene, he didn’t want that type of negative attention but he was so desperate to get you to listen to him that in the moment he didn’t care to risk it.

The tone of his voice made you freeze, you could hear the emotion behind it. Nicholas has never cried in front of you before, and you’d feel guilty if the first time he ever did was when he had an audience of his peers staring back at him.

You half smiled at the onlookers, grabbing his hand before leading him down the street to a secluded area. The two of you sitting down beside one another on a lonely park bench.

“I’m sorry, you know I don’t mean to-“

“I was standing alone in the corner of that party for hours Nicholas! Hours!”

You never called him by his name, it was normally something cutesy. He loved your pet names, but hearing his actual first name was a stab in the heart.

“Why did you even bring me? To embarrass me? To make me feel alone? Why do you always do that?” Your voice finally cracked, letting him know just how hurt you were by it all.

“No! Not at all!” It was in his nature to be naturally defensive, something he was trying to work through. A sigh escaped him as he closed his eyes to center himself.

“I love you, and I’m sorry. I just get so caught up in the moment and five minutes turns to ten and then suddenly it’s been two hours and-“

“Did you just say you love me?”

He had never said it out loud before, at least not to you. He hadn’t even realized he said it now until your eyes widened and the look on your face completely changed from pensive to a smile.

“Yes,” he sighed again, this time relieved to finally have gotten that off his chest.

“I love you and I’m going to do better at showing it.”

“That was the point!” The two of you stood on the porch, simply enjoying each other’s embrace for a minute before you whispered. “I’m so proud of you.”

He relaxed at that, slowly pulling away to look at you properly. “Thank you.”

Before you could say anything else, your attention was drawn to the man standing at the doorway. It only took a second for you to recognize him.

“Oh! This is Nicholas. Nic, this is my sister,” Cooper said, stepping back to introduce you two.

You smiled, nodding at him.“Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you, too,” Nicholas nodded, although his eyes lingered over you a little bit longer than they should have.

Cooper cleared his throat, putting his hands together and smiling. “Okay, come in, come in!” He ushered, pulling you inside with them.

“I hope I’m not interrupting,” you say as you walk into Cooper’s house, entering the living room.

“Oh, not at all. We were just hanging out,” Cooper explains, sitting on the couch and patting the spot next to him. You joined him, Nicholas taking the spot on the other side of you. “So. Fill me in. What’s new and exciting?” He asks, smiling at the cliche question and picking his drink up.

You chuckled, shaking your head. He knew how much you hated when your relatives would ask that after a long period of not seeing them. “Same old, same old. School, work, sleep, and repeat, y’know?”

“Nothing new at all? No new friends, more than friends?” Cooper teases, nudging you and sending a wink your way.

For some reason, the question makes your cheeks flush. You knew this was just Cooper being Cooper, but something about Nicholas sitting next to you made it awkward. “You’re acting like we haven’t spoken in months, I texted you yesterday,” you laughed, shaking your head. “You would already know.”

He smiles, nodding his head. “I know, I know, just teasing you. Do you want a drink?” He asks, moving to stand.

“Uh, maybe just water?” You ask, thanking him as he moves for the kitchen. Nicholas takes this opportunity to speak up.

“What school do you go to?” He asks, and it’s clear his eyes have been on you since he sat back down.

“Oh, University of California San Diego,” You nod, smiling at him. It was nice of him to fill the silence, because you know you wouldn’t have the courage to.

“Really? That’s cool. What do you do there?” He asks, sipping at his drink.

Fuck. You knew he’d ask that. You clear your throat, suddenly finding a loose thread in your shirt very interesting.

“I’m an anatomy major.”

Nicholas chokes on his drink, immediately bringing a hand up to his mouth. You can’t help but chuckle, seeing him struggle to swallow it. He laughs once he does, nodding and wiping his mouth.

“Anatomy, really?” He asks, the two of you chuckling again.

“Yup. Gonna do something in the medical field, not quite sure what yet.”

He nods slowly, putting his drink back down. “You gotta be pretty smart to do that, huh?” Nicholas asks, smiling at you.

It takes you a minute to respond, finding yourself hypnotized by him. His pretty smile, eyes, hair. Everything, really. Your smile sticks until you remember he asked you something. “Oh! Yeah. I mean, I guess. It’s not easy work,” you ramble, trying to recover from that awkward silence, feeling your face heat up again.
