It’s Nexus Leadership and Personnel Appreciation Week and of course I’m celebrating my absolute favorite, Tiran Kandros.

Kandros can remember the first time he saw her, image etched into his mind permanently. Running on fumes, no hope, his closest friend in a new galaxy gone rogue, taking what felt like half the station with her and leaving a trail of death and devastation. All that and the arks hadn’t arrived, probably wouldn’t- he faced his own death with as much dignity as he could manage, but none of this was what he had signed up for.

Then she appeared, trailing a sheepish worker who had been welding the heart of the Nexus back together. In a world so long tinged with darkness of power outages and the gray sheen of faces who had lost hope, she was so colorful, so bright. Her armor was almost blindingly white, but he had to admit it was her hair that he first fixed on, a color of lavender that should have been seen in flowerbeds throughout the Nexus but was sadly absent.

His second thought was less charitable. This woman- this girl- was calling herself to the human Pathfinder, but even he knew that it was supposed to be Alec Ryder, Jien Garson’s right-hand man, filled with experience and wisdom and a sort of contagious zest for exploring their new home. She had none of this; she was small and uncertain, chin jutting out in defiance against the world, confusion furrowing her brows.

She represented everything the Nexus had been hoping and waiting for, and yet she was just human, not even his age. It felt like too much to place so many lives on her shoulders, but he needed to unburden his own. And maybe, if he looked back now, maybe he loved her a little bit even from the beginning.

For Nexus Leadership and Personnel Appreciation Week, I really want to talk about how much I like Foster Addison. Spoilers for Nexus Uprising.

First, I like that she's very brash and doesn't really apologize for it. I like that she counts in her head before replying to some questions because she might explode if she doesn't. She sighs a lot as if to say "I am so tired of dealing with idiots but unfortunately I can't move back to the Milky Way..........................." I like that the codex specifies that she wants a position of responsibility without being put in the spotlight so much. I can relate! And we know from Nexus Uprising that she imagined herself sipping wine with Jien and some diplomat from a new species once in Andromeda. She never wanted to be such a visible or powerful Nexus leader. 

Once in Andromeda, she's found by Sloane but she's hurt and has a concussion. They stumble into a place full of dead people a few minutes later. Addison starts saying "no, no" a lot. She's obviously shocked and upset. But what does she do next? She takes a deep breath to steel herself and try to find survivors. I like that she has all those different reactions and eventually faces her fears and moves on. She does this in a big way in Nexus Uprising. To be honest, I'm very critical of the decisions the leaders make in the book but I see nothing malicious or cruel coming from Addison. She tried hard to work with Tann and Sloane. They both hated each other and she was in the middle, having to be diplomatic when we know it's not exactly her thing.

She's also painfully aware of the consequences of all the choices she and Tann have made but believe they tried their best. When Sloane stares at her in Nexus Uprising after telling her exactly what went wrong with the leadership, Addison gives her a look of apology, worry and anger. That seems very Addison to me. All those emotions mixed together. And the thing is, I see her as very committed to the mission. She takes it to heart and it influences all her decisions. To me, it explains many things, including her sending the scouts when it was too dangerous and doomed to fail. It also shows that once she has a bit of hope, she holds on to it and refuses to let go.

All that to say that I like grumpy "I want to hide in my corner but no one is letting me" Addison :)
