I like older computers, the late mini-computer/early micro-computer era. I appreciate the smaller ones—Dragons, Aquariuses, Adams, NewBrains—but I keep returning to the big names: PDP, Commodore, Apple, PC. Part of it comes from ego—I would like to think I could've been a part of the HCC or contributed to early games history—but I know better. I try to appreciate these machines both as progenitors to what I use in daily life, and for the beauty in themselves. There is something special about a machine, so small in its abilities, trying to do its best. This is all philosophizing. I like older computers. They're honest machines. Wozniak said never to trust a machine you can't throw out a window. But from what I've seen, the defenstrable ones can be just as bratty as a mainframe. I prefer the reading of "all the laws of an Old Testament God, with none of the mercy." They expect certain things of you and will happily do it all wrong if you aren't careful with them. They are like dogs in that way, they don't know any better. I like older computers. There are limits that are hard for a modern audience to understand, I think. I am not experienced in programming for them by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a certain beauty is in cutting down an idea to its essentials. Gently helping the computer to process it, to walk it through what you want it to do, and encouraging it to figure it all out on its own. Seeing a computer do something well beyond what it should puts one in awe, and makes you feel a kind of pride over the capacity it has. I like older computers. They deserve love; I try to give it to them.

The Home Computer boom of the 80s was a Damn good time. Of course, in the end, The Oric, the Dragon, The MSX, Newbury Newbrain, Acorn's Electron, all pretty much fell by the wayside. VIC was replaced pretty quick by the '64. Though the Amiga took a little longer to gain traction, but the 16-bit Home Computer wars was pretty much a Two-horse race in Europe, at least until the Games industry decided that the PC was where it was at.

But the 90s is another story, and the rise of PC gaming its own story as well!

Say what you want, but 80s tehcnology was inclusive as hell
