Jalen Ngonda Announces Debut Album & Drops Video For Come Around And Love Me

Jalen Ngonda starts summer with the '60s soul-styled single "Come Around And Love Me" from his forthcoming debut album. The Daptone Records artist released the video today vide that he stars in with his guitar. The Marvin Gaye influence is a warm throwback feeling that Ngonda confidently brings into the 21st century. He describes the tune in a press statement: 
"It was written in late 2021 as soon as it was possible to fly to the USA after lockdown I jumped on a plane and we got to work! The song is about taking a chance in spite of the surrounding doubts.”
The DC native who makes London his home, recorded "Come Around And Love Me" in Brooklyn with producers and arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires. Ngonda's proudly claims his love of Motown and classic soul and those sounds will be on his debut. The album is also named Come Around And Love Me and has a release date of September 8th. He is going on a tour of some European cities this summer more than 20 North American cities in the fall. Tickets are available for both tours.

Going through the motions of 2021′s shitty NF season, it was a given that the critical mass of the “2020 returnees” competing the selections in these would win them hands down. 
So given how much i DISLIKED the offensively boring abomination “What love is”, and how PAINFULLY inevitable Uku’s victory in a decent Eesti Laul (um spoiler for NF corner?) seemed to be, It’s actually a shock I ended up liking Uku? But I do, lol and I’m not apologizing, sorry boos. 
In fact, I was rooting for Uku to win EL as soon as I saw his performance in the semi. “The lucky one”, which suffered from Aggressive Autotune + Forgettable Melody (we need a name for this. I propose Roxen Syndrome?), is legit good live and harps back to the (admittedly better) “Pretty Little Liar”, and that’s good enough for me. 
Of course, I am aware of the obvious ~*SOULLESS HIMBOT FROM THE DREAM FACTORY*~ label attached to this this entry (written by Uku and something called “Sharon Vaughn” are we certain this person isn’t just Kontopoulos in drag?), don’t worry. I rank him twentieth, not seventh. 
Fortunately, Uku is a mandroid from the SAME sweatshop that gave us Lucie Jones a few years back - in other words omfg he’s barely functional. 😍 Droning robot turned incompetent DRAMA KING <333333 The amount of EFFORT that needs to be thrown in to keep a ~pretence of competence~ is the most tangible in the backing vocals, which trail Uku’s like a shadow and STILL his voicecracks come through at key intervals <3

The pathos of Uku throwing in high votes he cannot sing and then his voice breaking over the strain each time, gets me, okay? He doesn’t need a crystal ball to show me, baby it’s clear that you don’t know him :SOB:.  So dramatic, so inept, so unintetionally comedic, so Uku <3 
In other news, this lockdown had better end soon because with each passing day I feel like I’m turning further into a cat lady.

NF Corner - Eesti Laul 2021
Finally a decent Eesti Laul, lol. I wish I could say it was good, but it had one of the weirdest semi split’s I’ve ever seen. EL’s first Semi was without exaggeration the WORST show in the entire season, and the second was a contender for the BEST one across all NFs???? I suppose EXTREME Evil and EXTREME Good balance each other out in blistering adequacy? 
Anyway, I’ll now proceed to ignore Koit and Egert and Karl Killing and Hans and all the other bad (non-Linna/non-Kéa) entries from semi 1, and proceed to an NF Corner composed ENTIRELY of semi 2 songs :-)

It was between Sissi and Jüri for the Token Superfinalist Contender slot on this list, and Jüri is infinitely more notable. Sorry, Sis ur time (to win Eesti Laul?) will come once you figure out to write good music :(
Anyway, what can I even say about Jüri because lmfao what a baffling entry. Registered BARITONE JÜRI POOTSMANN coming back with a an experimental lounge jazz song that is song almost entirely in falsetto. 😍 The camera angles <3 the fact that this already INCREDEBLY short song includes 10 seconds of Jüri standing on the stage looking bored <3 what a fucking baffling entry, I have no opinions, only exclamations of surprise.

The UNPLUGGED Meiekündimees MADNESS of it all, now condenced into a equally nonsensical song that is basically like “X is a wooden town but NONE OF THEM ARE AS WOODEN TOWNY AS TARTTU. *incoherent kazoo noises*” 😍😍😍 Once got the chorus stuck in my head at the zoo as I was watching the penguins getting fed and it was one of the most bizarre synesthesic experiences I’ve ever had lmfao <3

If you’re wondering what the sort of music I listen to Eurovision is like - this is it. INCREDIBLY good and addictive and EMOTIONALLY tangible 80s New Wave is my fucking jam, can we have entries like this in EVERY selection from here on out? WELL DONE Kristel... on composing this wonderful song, less so on the Kazka-esque vocals that caused it to tragically NQ in the semi. 🙄 Still, BRING THEM BACK (and restrict Kristel to a songwriter only role, plz.)

IT WAS HARD DECIDING BETWEEN SUURED TÜDRÜKUD AND KADRI THOUGH. But given that Charlotte Perelli is guaranteed to appear in Sweden’s NF corner (um is she? :counts on fingers: Clara, Evas, Dotter... ehh sure I’m committed now I guess), it would be best NOT to post Dagmar & Kaire as they fucking clown her lol <3 But their song WAS pretty antiquated schlager...
Kadri otoh... absolutely breaks all records for me by delivering a unicorn: an entertaining stripped-down piano ballad. For the most part because she has incredible emotional delivery that serves personality on a fucking pyrotechnical level, like onn-stop “Loudmouthed Oaf Energy” in the form of a introspective jazz ballad <3 Can you imagine Estonia actually picking this? They could have come left-handside. 
But will Uku do well? :o

He won’t come top 10, if that’s what you mean by “well”.😂 If you mean “qualify for the Grand Final” then... potentially? Semi 2 is less of a crapshoot than the first semifinal however. At this stage, it’s pretty much “okay, so these twelve acts can qualify... but which ten will?”.
Fortunately for Uku, he is one of aforementionned twelve possible qualifiers. (the others are: san marino, czech rep, greece, moldova, iceland, serbia, albania, bulgaria, finland, switzerland and denmark). UNfortunately for Uku, he’s one of the candidates for the two NQ slots inside that group of twelve.
The problem with Estonia is that their entry is a televote-friendly ballad, stuck in a really televote-UNfriendly slot (#02), in a semi where the jury vote will very likely put them outside the top 10. If we add in a dark stage and Uku’s shaky vocals, they don’t look particularly secure. 
However, I also think Estonia can qualify relatively easily because “televote-friendly ballad” is a unique niche inside that semi; the other ballads (Switzerland is NOT a ballad), won’t be getting many votes and Uku’s appeal as a handsome man with a dramatic song will make him stand out in spite of his spot in the running order, as LONG AS his vocal delivery (or that of the prerecorded backing vocals) remains adequate enough. If not, he’ll be swiftly forgotten and NQ.
Another thing that can cause Uku to qualify is if at least two others of the twelve underwhelm (my money for that would be on Albania, Denmark, San Marino and/or Czech Rep), making Uku the lucky one as he’ll ascend in the ensuing powercreep.
At any rate, it’s really difficult to gauge how well Uku would do since I haven’t really thought about the other BL qualifiers’ odds enough. His televote should be strong enough to avoid bottom 3, I think, and I think it’s safe to say he won’t come top five. Between those values, pffffew, who can possibly tell? I’m not burning my fingers on that. 
Projected placements > Qualifier Tier: Borderline > Semifinal: 6th-14th (out of 17) > Grand Final: 17th-22nd (out of 26)

What kinds of monopolies does Buffett love? Well, if you can't afford dialysis or if you lost a loved one to opioids, chances are Buffett made a buck. A classic Buffett moat is health/pharma, which are easy to monopolize thanks to the captive audience and/or addiction.
If your town only has one newspaper, that might be Buffet's doing - and if not, it was the doing of one of his buffettistas, using his playbook to buy one paper and then crush its rivals with anticompetitive tactics.
If you own a mobile home and lost money the instant you bought it and get worse off every year in a trailer park, that's probably Buffett, who understands that when someone is desperately clinging on at the brink of homelessness, you can really squeeze 'em.
If you own a .net or .com domain that you're paying big bucks to renew every year, that's Buffett, working through Verisign, one of the world's most profitable companies, thanks to its government monopoly on the to biggest TLDs.
If your favorite craft brewer was driven to its knees and bought up for pennies by the Brazilian private equity firm 3G, that was Buffett, who drove the purchase of beer monopolist AB Inbev. Buffett's also behind megamergers like Burger King/Tim Horton's and Kraft/Heinz.
And while Buffett rarely buys tech businesses, he was big, early on Amazon: "I had to understand the product and business." Dayen translates: "he understood the monopoly that Amazon was putting together, so he purchased a large share of their stock."
Buffett's also big on Moody's part of the hyperconcentrated bond-rating market: "I know nothing about credit rating. The only reason I bought it is because there are only three credit rating agencies and they serve the whole country, and they have pricing power."
Buffett's ideal investment is a monopolist, one that makes money so reliably, irrespective of poor quality or high prices, that "even your idiot cousin could run it."
Buffett doesn't just seek out monopolies: he creates them, he cheerleads them, he normalizes them. Buffett, perhaps more than anyone else on Earth, has legitimized the idea of monopolies.
As Dayen points out, "Buffett would be the best informant for an antitrust authority that you could find, because he's already looked into the economy and found the companies that have the most inordinate market power. And so all you’d need to do is subpoena him and say, all right, tell me about this company that you bought and why you bought it. And you would say, well, they have this incredible pricing power. Well, there you go."
Monopolies esoteric, so let's put some sinew and blood onto those bones. Zephyr Teachout's new book "Break 'Em Up" has a great chapter on "chickenization," the labor practice named for the way the poultry-processing monopolists do business.

If you're a poultry farmer, here's how your life works. The three poultry processors have divided up America so there's only one processor in range of your farm. That processor tells you how to run your business.
They design your coop. They sell you your chicks. They tell you when and what to feed them. They tell you when to turn on the lights and when to turn them off. They tell you which vets to use, and which meds the vets can prescribe.
They experiment on you: some farmers are given experimental chick breeds, or experimental feeding or lighting schedules.
But through it all, they don't tell you how much they're gonna pay you.
You find that out when you send your chickens to the plant - they just...decide. If the price is too low, you go broke. Chickenizers tune the process to keep farmers at the brink of bankruptcy. If you complain, they stop buying your chickens.
If you complain in PUBLIC, they tell all the other farmers that if they do business with you, they'll stop being able to sell their chickens, too.
Chickenization isn't just for chickens. It's the Uber model, the Shipt model, the model of any "gig work" that tells you what you have to buy and spend, but not what you will earn, with the pretense that you are an "independent contractor."

Chickenization is coming to vast swathes of the workforce, and lockdown will accelerate it, because if your job can be done anywhere in the world, your employer can shop for the cheapest labor, anywhere in the world.
And even though you're working from home, bossware lets your employer (excuse me, the company you "contract to") control and script your movements down to the keystroke, watching your facial expressions and listening to your mic.

The Last Kingdom: Netflix tease fourth season of show
The Last Kingdom season four arrived on Netflix in 2020 as fans said goodbye to some of the main characters. Actor Toby Regbo played the antagonistic lord Aethelred in the historical drama, and he was killed off in a dramatic scene. The star has just been cast in a new role and Express.co.uk has all you need to know about where he is now.
Where is Toby Regbo now?
The Last Kingdom is a popular Anglo-Saxon drama series inspired by real figures from that renowned time period. Aethelred of Mercia was married to Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), the daughter of King Alfred (David Dawson), in the series. He treated her appallingly and even plotted to have her killed, but she was able to fight back against him.
In the fourth season, Aethelred was injured in battle and his wife had to take over as leader. On his deathbed, he realised all the pain he had caused his wife and made amends with her. Sadly he was killed by his commander Eardwulf (Jamie Blackley), who had been plotting to overthrow him.

Although fans despised the character, they were gutted to see Regbo leave the historical drama. Thankfully, they have been able to watch him in his other ventures and he has just landed a role in a popular fantasy series.
News has just been released confirming he has been cast as the character Jack in the Sky and Prime Video series, A Discovery of Witches. The 29-year-old star said he was excited to be joining such a fantastic cast, and work will start on the new season soon.
He had joined the cast of The Last Kingdom in 2017 and played Aethelred in a total of 15 episodes. Aethelred may have only been a recurring role, but he was one of the most memorable of the series.
In 2019, Regbo went on to star in the historical drama Medici: Masters of Florence. He also played a young Albus Dumbledore in the 2018 film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
A Discovery of Witches will be his next venture, but a release date has not yet been announced.
In September 2020, Regbo spoke to The Screen Chronicles about what it was like leaving The Last Kingdom. He said he enjoyed being a part of the huge battle scene, seeing as his character had spent so much time "sitting on a throne". Following his injury in battle, Aethelred started to come to terms with his demons and Regbo said he was a "scared child" who did not want to die.
He said: "It was really nice to end on that quiet note, especially as when you are leaving a show it is kind of a death. "It's the end of something you have worked on for quite a long time, I love everyone who works on that show. "Getting to say goodbye in that way, I was really grateful for that. If I was to die in that ditch, I wouldn't have been able to say 'bye everybody'." He admitted his character would have been "terrified" in his final moments, which is partly why he reconciled with Aethelflaed.
One fan had commented: "This guy is an outstanding actor. His death scenes in The Last Kingdom is the best death acting I’ve ever seen in Movies. I’m sure Toby will have a long career. All his scenes in The Last Kingdom as the King of Mercia were fantastic."
Since the coronavirus lockdown, the star has taken up a passion for art and has been showcasing his drawings on social media. He studied art at school but did not put his skills into practice until recently.
Commenting on his creativity, one fan said: "You certainly are a Renaissance Man. You are able to master it all."
He has been keeping fans up to date with his other work projects and has posted plenty of behind the scenes shots from The Last Kingdom. The actor was also due to star in the Game of Thrones prequel series, but the pilot was never picked up.
Needless to say, fans are excited to see him in his upcoming role as the adopted son of Diana (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew (Matthew Goode) in A Discovery of Witches.

I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough. 
TV Series
01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).
02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?
03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock. 
04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives. 
05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end. 
06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!
07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting. 
08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**
09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!
10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening. 
11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux. 
12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed. 
13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be! 
14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

First, take a look at the very equivocal position of the Democratic leadership. One little noted detail is important. An amendment inserted in the lame-duck legislation that enshrined the “Swaps Pushout” weakening of the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill in January 2015, made it easier for big donors to funnel much larger sums of money to the national party committees. This has, I think, made it even easier for blocs of big donors to control those committees, even as small contributions sometimes surge. Not only in 2018, but in the 2020 primaries, I think this mattered.
As a result, the Democratic National Committee has not been subordinated to the Biden campaign, at least not yet. The surge in the southern Democratic primaries that destroyed the Sanders boom involved many big Democratic donors along with many black congressmen and women, together with the political and financial networks of former president Barack Obama and the Clintons. It was a coming together of the entire Democratic establishment to stop Sanders. Congressional black leaders were thus heavily identified with the “Stop Sanders” movement, too.
But with the combined economic collapse and the pandemic revealing the bankruptcy of the traditional establishment, the whole top of the party has had to scramble. How they have responded is very interesting. Thanks to the dissemination of so many videos, the realization about the racism that black Americans face — and not just by so many police — is very widespread. The revulsion is deep and real.
In response, the Democratic establishment is taking a leaf from the past — not the late ’60s, when groups highly critical of the Democrats became prominent, but the early ’60s. Joel Rogers and I described the process in our book Right Turn. When the civil rights movement emerged, major foundations, prominent business leaders of major multinationals, and foundations allied to them heavily supported that groundswell. John F. Kennedy famously called Martin Luther King in jail, while prominent Wall Street lawyers flew down south or otherwise helped represent civil rights campaigners who were under legal attack. That’s what’s happening right now, with groups closely allied with the Democratic Party helping to raise money. There will be tensions now, as there were then, between the party and the movement, but that’s the basic direction things are taking.                
So how does this play into the election?                                   
I think the basic script each party is following is evident. Democrats are hoping for a repeat of 2008. In that election, policy was hopelessly bungled by the Republican leadership. After Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, nobody in opposition had to say very much. Democrats could just sit and watch John McCain flail helplessly.
Donald Trump, by contrast, is clearly copying the Nixon playbook, though because he’s in power, 1972 is closer to the mark than 1968. His administration’s heavy-handed appeals to “law and order” are obvious, and so are the ways he tries to bait protesters. The “law and order” mantra is looking a bit thin, though, partly because the videos and protests so clearly touch a chord with many members of the public. But it is also apparent that the US military wants no part in quelling domestic protests, so that the best Trump is likely to be able to do is to try to irritate protesters and hope for strong public reactions. Attorney general William Barr is also pitching in, in spectacular fashion.
The other thing the White House is bent on doing is finding a way to levitate the economy. In 1972, Richard Nixon famously relied on Arthur Burns at the Fed to engineer a legendary political business cycle. Today’s Fed certainly reacts to pressures from Trump, but the drastically different world situation severely limits its room for maneuver. It can hardly do more than it has even if it wanted to.
This is why the president and the vice president are trying so desperately to downplay the pandemic. They want to drive people back to work and push up the GDP. Vice president Mike Pence is plainly encouraging state leaders to talk up their successes and downplay bad news, including spiking COVID-19 cases in the South and West. The White House thinks they have to get the economy moving again or Trump will be toast in November.           
How different is this from what the administration was doing earlier?  
It represents a doubling down on policies that Trump and his camp wanted to promote earlier and did for a while. As the pandemic hit, all over the developed world, prominent business figures and conservative economists warned about the dangers of a long lockdown. Some, including an occasional central banker, even talked sotto voce about how such policies would reduce state pension obligations. In the United States, the UK, and other European countries, advocates talked up the idea of “herd immunity.” Trump’s “kitchen cabinet” of business figures, including prominent private equity managers, were repeatedly cited as pushing the president to take a “go slow” attitude on lockdowns.
After the publication of the Imperial College estimates of the death rates such policies would entail, though, enthusiasm waned. The UK changed policy. The switch definitely affected the Trump administration’s attitudes. It helped, along with the ghastly reality of what was happening on the ground, especially on the East and West coasts of the United States, to force the administration to accept lockdowns and sheltering in place. Both in the United States and in the UK, though, pressures from business groups for rapid reopening remained very strong. Conservative groups have even urged reopening without establishing a viable testing regime, which is exactly what the administration has now done.
Clear camps are forming within business, and those look to be seeping into politics. Many small companies whose business models rest on low wages, along with financiers — meaning private equity first and foremost — whose strategies depend on buying and breaking up firms, continue to plump for rapid reopening.
By contrast, many firms in the rest of finance, and especially in high-tech and capital-intensive industries whose strategies do not rest on low wages, are less heedless of the dangers of quick opening. Many tech firms enthusiastically promote their products as solutions to the problems the pandemic creates — as is obvious with many internet and software companies. Robert Rubin called for joint panels of medical professionals and economists to decide when reopening was feasible and for contact tracing; even robotic assistance has been touted.
Where the rubber meets the road, though, is the critical question of worker safety. Trump gutted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Not only is the number of inspectors way down, but key appointees are plainly uninterested in regulating on the issue at all.
It seems to me that this is a potentially fateful intersection between the movement growing out of Minneapolis and the Democrats. Calls to reopen quickly are basically demands by affluent white-collar managers who can work at home. They want to send blue-collar workers back to work under conditions the senior executives would not accept for themselves. Many of the blue-collar workers are, it is important to add, black or Latino. Though you would never know from reading any major newspaper, wildcat and other strikes have soared since Minneapolis. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of them, as Mike Elk’s Payday Report website is documenting. It seems clear that the protests have inspired many black and Latino workers to demand safe working conditions.
I don’t have much to say for the classic financial bailouts the United States has pursued — they protect the wealth of those that have it, while the government does something, but not much, to protect the livelihood of average citizens. But it would make a great deal of sense to move onto the national balance sheet the costs of redesigning work to make it safe. That would be a really good use of public resources.                              
So how does this play out in the election?                                                   
Right now, COVID-19 cases are soaring in many Southern and Western states, whose Republican governors had followed the White House lead and pretended the pandemic was over or would somehow never reach them. As a result, you can feel a seismic tremor in Trump’s support: the fabled 40 percent or so base level for him that people thought could never be breached is being broken.
But I remember 1988 very well, when Michael Dukakis was almost 20 points ahead of George H. W. Bush in late summer. A lot can happen to change what looks like an all but insurmountable advantage. One needs to remember that Biden looks good mostly next to Trump; the Democratic candidate doesn’t generate much enthusiasm from voters on his own. How the Biden campaign can tap the energy that fueled Sanders, and, to some extent, Warren, is not clear yet. The terms of trade between the camps are still being worked out, and the effort could fail. If Democratic elites are dumb enough to believe the claims so many have made that 2016 had nothing to do with economics, they could repeat that disaster.
I have a hard time believing that people who are out of work and watching how the government is allowing insurers to slip out of covering the costs of COVID tests will be inspired to vote for Biden without something far stronger than a “public option” for health care instead of Medicare for All, for example.
Plenty else can go wrong, too. Let’s just bracket the possibility of some foreign crisis, especially in the South China Sea, since it’s also clear Trump right now is still hoping that a big trade deal with China might come through. Otherwise, there are the old reliables for the GOP: efforts to hold down voter turnout and giant flows of big money.
This year, though, there’s a wrinkle to the first one. Trump’s campaign against the Post Office may have started out as a fight with Amazon, but right now, it’s clearly turned into something else. Empirical evidence from the Wisconsin primary is clear that voting in person led to several waves of new COVID infections.
As a result, interest in mail balloting is way up. Of course, Republicans are mostly opposed to that, though empirical evidence up to now does not suggest that mail ballots have strong partisan advantages one way or the other. But, of course, a broke Post Office won’t be delivering much of anything. My guess is that you’ll see Trump dig in ever more obdurately on this issue as election day approaches.
Which brings us to the money question. Here, I don’t have much to add to what my colleagues Paul Jorgensen, Jie Chen, and I wrote earlier in the year. In 2016, we found that Trump floated to victory on a big wave of late money from large private equity firms, among others. We also conjectured that the perfect correlation for the first time in American history between Republican success in Senate elections and the outcome of the presidential vote in states was not an accident. That turned out to be true. Trump did a bit better in states with Senate races. We’ve now shown how late money turned around those Senate races, when prospects just weeks before the election looked hopeless. That example is instructive. Democratic candidates who lost elections in those final days have told me how they watched the inflow of money turn around what had seemed a favorable situation. Problems with even counting ballots are, I think, likely to make 2020 very tense, no matter what polls say now or even the day before. Whether we live in a pre- or a post-apocalyptic era might be tested.

Thus far, NJPW has not announced any cancellations or changes to any upcoming shows due to the new lockdown order. That said, Pro Wrestling BASARA, a now-independent spinoff of DDT, has announced their show on 5/5/2021 from Itabashi Ward in Tokyo has now been cancelled due to the facility being closed under the emergency order. To my knowledge this is the first, and so far, only, cancellation announced. So this is still a possibility, especially with the first three Road To Wrestle Grand Slam shows in Korakuen Hall. We’ll keep you posted.

Last night’s episode of NJPW Strong on NJPWWorld featured the grand finale to the New Japan Cup USA 2021, and with it, the first-ever crowning of the NJPW Strong Openweight Champion. Indie wrestler Wheeler Yuta also made his NJoA debut on this show.

Tomorrow night at Impact Wrestling’s Rebellion PPV (I know the graphic says its today, they changed it, shush), Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr. will defend the Impact Tag Team titles against the team they beat for them, “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows. I have a feeling they won’t be holding on to them, as the overriding story right now in both Impact and AEW is How Unstoppable The Fauxlet Club Are. The main event of the show is AEW World Champion Kenny Omega v. Impact World Champion Rich Swann in a Title v. Title match, and that result was a foregone conclusion the second they announced it. There’s always room for a swerve however. Anyway, it’s on PPV, probably on FITE TV, tomorrow night, if you want to check it out.
The tour is off tomorrow, but resumes Monday with a show that will be shown live on NJPWWorld. The feature matches are two special singles grudge matches between LIJ v. United Empire. Might be sneaky good.

June 8, 2020: King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the High Performance Center of the Higher Sports Council. They wanted to accompany a prominent group of elite athletes from Spain, in one of the first days of reopening after the lockdown. More than a hundred athletes are already preparing for the next international competitions, including the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, postponed by the pandemic to 2021.
Felipe and Letizia have been received by the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes and by the President of the Superior Council of Sports, Irene Lozano, with whom they have held an informative meeting on the current situation and challenges of the CSD, whose headquarters they have visited for the first time.
They have toured part of the 150,000 square meters of sports facilities of the High Performance Center, which concentrates the largest number of high-level athletes in all of Spain, with 42 modalities distributed in the Central Pavilion and in multiple buildings I and II of high competition; where they have been able to witness the training exercises of Carolina Marin, Lidia Valentín, Rey Zapata, Sara Andrés, Mohamed Enhamed, Desirée Vilas, among other Olympic and Paralympic athletes and athletes and male and female teams from different disciplines.
Finally, on the athletics tracks they have had a meeting with the group of athletes present in the CAR today, to whom the Kings with their presence have conveyed their spirit to recover strength and spirit as soon as possible and continue representing Spain, as best sports image of our country in the World.
Don Felipe pointed out "... See you train and also listen to how you have lived this time, which has been so difficult for everyone, is also very encouraging. If you have had an injury and I think that most of those who compete end up having some in their career, you have overcome it and recovered; or you have done everything possible to achieve it. Without getting discouraged, without fainting and with the self-love and self-esteem that characterizes you as athletes and without a doubt also as citizens ... ", and to end Don Felipe stressed that" ...In a team all its members are necessary. You know it well. No one left over. Lean on each other and help those who need it, cover their gap when necessary and without being noticed. In a team everyone contributes their individual condition to make the team much better. More powerful, winner, stronger, more resistant, proud of their achievements and working to improve permanently ... Spain is a team. All the Spanish, the 47 million Spaniards are a great team. General data of the Madrid High Performance Center:
Both the ownership and the management of the High Performance Center of Madrid (CAR de Madrid) belongs to the Higher Sports Council (CSD).
The CAR of Madrid is a set of elite sports facilities and biomedical, academic and human technological means put at the service of Spanish sport as the main tool in improving the physical capacities of athletes, thereby improving the achievement of results that give prestige to Spanish sport.
The CAR in Madrid concentrates the largest number of high-level athletes in all of Spain. Its orientation is sports, prepared for the practice of 42 sports, including Paralympic disciplines. In addition, it hosts high-level, one-off gatherings and training courses.
Its facilities are located on a plot with an extension of 150,000 m2. The construction of its first phase ends in 1992 (covered athletics module). In 1995 the works of the second phase finished (artistic and rhythmic gymnastics rooms, 50-meter pool, gym and combat sports area). In the year 2000 a third phase was completed (fencing rooms, weightlifting, canoeing, triathlon, boxing and combat sports, shooting gallery, gym and sports hall. In 2007 the construction of a new residence was completed (Joaquín Blume) for athletes to replace the old one, with capacity for 310 people (Opening date 07/11/2007).
From 2007 to the present day, the CAR in Madrid has been modernizing and updating its facilities and sports equipment to the new requirements and technological advances demanded by the Ato Nivel.
The budget of the Madrid CAR is € 8 million per year.
The most outstanding services to athletes are accommodation, maintenance, use of top-level sports facilities, medical care and academic care. The Joaquín Blume Residence, located in the same CAR campus, houses in its facilities an extension of the Ortega y Gasset Institute of Compulsory Education, where the following teachings are taught: 3rd and 4th ESO, Adult Education, 1st and 2nd Baccalaureate of Sciences Social and humanities, 1st and 2nd Baccalaureate of Sciences (all baccalaureates can be chosen at a distance), preparation course for access to higher degree cycles. 1st and 2nd Cycles of medium degree: computer networks and microsystems. 1st and 2nd Cycle of Higher Degree: Animator of physical and sports activities-TAFAD, 1st Superior Technician in physical conditioning (TSAF),1st Higher Technician in Teaching and Socio-Sports Animation (TSEAS), 2nd Higher Technician in Animation of Physical and Sports Activities (TAFAD).
Residence "Joaquín Blume"
It houses athletes who reside and train in the CAR of the Higher Sports Council. The residence offers the use of facilities suitable for the overnight stay and maintenance of high-level athletes, having 219 fully-equipped rooms and 11 rooms adapted for disabled athletes, all of which represent a total capacity of 310 beds. It also has rooms for monitors and spacious rooms for medical service and administration. It has all the technological advances and a great variety of common services such as study rooms, library, TV room, hydrotherapy room, laundry, kitchens, dining room for 220 people, cafeteria and garage for 80 seats. It also has classrooms to study through the Institute of secondary education (IES) Ortega y Gasset through an agreement signed between the Higher Sports Council and said IES It also has a cleaning and laundry service.
The work that is carried out is aimed mainly and fundamentally at ensuring that our athletes achieve the best sports, academic and good socialization results at the end of their stay as scholarship holders at the Joaquín Blume Residence Hall .
