Masterpost: Index
Now that it’s no longer possible to experience OTAM as a “dose a day” math fix, I figured I’d try to get around to making a somewhat more accessible organizational scheme. This post is obviously something of a hack, but it was good enough for printed books for hundreds of years it can be good enough for little old OTAM. I’ve split post this into two parts:
First comes a list of significant tags. This means reasonably small collections of posts but contain a high density of the most interesting posts.
And second, underneath a readmore, comes a list of posts (or drafted posts) which are significant in their own right but cannot be easily found from the tags. [The eight posts in this list marked with stars and italics are, in my opinion, the absolute highlights of this blog.]

It looks you three lead the pack by a longshot; I had some ideas but ultimately I couldn’t find anyone doing better than Maria Gillespie who has 123 45 with the last two being a little bit iffy. But if you don’t count that then it looks like it’s just lots of people tied at three posts
(I thought Brubaker had four but apparently not; Dmitriy Bilyk also has three, with a weak but not totally implausible claim on six).

Journalist travel grants for Heidelberg Laureate Forum
From September 22-27, 2019, recipients of the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize will gather in Heidelberg to meet with 200 young researchers from all over the world at the 7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF).  To get mathematicians and computer scientists some more recognition, the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) is giving travel grants for journalists to cover the event. Grants cover travel costs as well as board and accommodation during the stay in Heidelberg from September 21-28, 2019.

Nevanlinna Medal Update
Hey, I know some folks have been asking about what happened with the IMU meeting about the Nevanlinna Medal. For those of you who missed it last time (and are too lazy to click on links), here is the short version:
The Rolf Nevanlinna Prize is the highest honor given by the International Mathematical Union to mathematicians in the information sciences.
It is good that this sort of work is being recognized and valued in our community. But we believe Rolf Nevanlinna— ardent supporter of Hitler and chairman of Finland’s voluteer SS division— is not the right person to represent this honor.
The Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union will meet in April; one of the items on their agenda is to consider a name change for the prize.
Until recently, I haven’t had any information at all, and I’ve just had to say “Sorry, we won’t know for a while.”
That’s still the case, but there is a little bit more data now, in the form of the following email from Alexander Soifer, the man leading the charge behind the name change, about two weeks ago:
------
Email
Hello, Eric,
The meeting took place in London on April 1-2, 2017.
At the end of April, I asked the president for information.
Here is his reply:
Dear Prof. Soifer,
We did discuss the issue regarding the Nevanlinna Prize at our recent EC meeting, and we made a decision.
But, as I am sure you understand, we need to discuss this with the partners involved.
Before we have reached an agreement with them, we will not go public.
We ask for your understanding of this way to proceed.
Best regards,
Shigefumi Mori
IMU President
I am not a fan of their secrecy regarding the date-location, and moreover of the decision. IMU should not act like FBI. The latter has reasons for secrecy, IMU does not.
He still today refuses to tell me what they decided. It may be time to collect e-mails of the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize winners, so that we can inform them on the person, whose profile they received.
Would you please collect their e-mails (the list of winners is on the IMU site). I will then write to all of them.
Best wishes,
Alexander
(fin)
------
I’ve gone ahead and sent him those emails, of course. The list was a lot shorter than I realized, actually, which gives me some hope: if we do have to re-lobby the IMU, it probably would only take one or two previous winners to put some real pressure on the organization.
Soifer and I were both unable to track down who these “partners” might be; if you think you have some insight into that, don’t hesitate to let me (or him!) know. Otherwise, when it becomes clear that we have useful action items again, you’ll be the first to know.
Also, I never formally thanked all you folks who reblogged, sent emails, and engaged me in the follow-up. Consider this a huge thank-you: we really appreciate your support :)

Then in 2012, Daskalakis and Weinberg, together with another of Daskalakis’ students, Yang Cai, developed an algorithm that can efficiently find the optimal auction design regardless of the number of items being sold. And over the next couple of years, Daskalakis and two more of his graduate students, Alan Deckelbaum and Christos Tzamos, pushed this analysis further in the case where there’s only one buyer (for instance, an individual choosing among different cell phone packages). In that setting, Daskalakis and his students were able to characterize, for any selling mechanism, the exact settings in which that mechanism will be optimal.
