It’s my first Nevada Day living in Nevada; I had to draw *something* epic! (As if I don’t also draw Nevada for the other 360-odd days a year 😂)

I’ve had this idea for awhile but finally got around to it. Sunglasses reflecting the duality of the state: the darkest of skies and endless miles of remote desert wilderness…vs. Las Vegas, bright lights, crowds, the chaos of the city…

The song itself doesn’t (literally) scream “Nevada” like some of their other songs so, but that part specifically really sums up the state to me:

This is actually a great summary of Nevada’s history (in this essay I will—): The mountain (mining industry) gives and takes, in an endless cycle of boom and bust. But “paving the streets with good times,” a.k.a. legalizing gambling, prostitution, etc, etc, ensures that the prosperity doesn’t end.

There’s plenty of weird shit out here, the name’s very ironic. I’ve seen it to believe it. You’re right, I’m a lil’ bit new here, so hey! Any local history I should know about?

People should know about what they’re getting into if they live/move near Perdition, Arizona, even if people don’t want to talk about it.

I haven’t been to Nothing-To-Fear, myself, but I know of it. An Uncanny Valley community in Nevada, “uncanny valley” here being a term for small extranormal communities that pop up across the country. Usually the entire population is extranormal in the some way or at least knows about it. Glamours are typically totally optional if not outright frowned upon. I remember the motto for Vender’s Gamble, Tennessee being “come as you are,” and they mean it. Typically they’re small and rural, and thus kind of …underprivileged, but there’s exceptions like Jackdaw in Washington State. Very rich planned community there.

I’m trying to choose my words carefully. A lot of uncanny valley communities are insular, and have a distrust or dislike of outsiders and especially the Office. Sometimes this is because of unfortunate events in history, and in those cases I don’t blame them.

In Nothing-To-Fear’s case, I don’t see a lot in my records to indicate we’ve done much aside from our nearby site in Arizona to keep an eye on Perdition. We’ve had a hands-off policy with a lot of uncanny valleys lately, so that’s not super surprising.

The Ghost of Bugsy Siegel

One of the few original hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada that remains today is the Flamingo Hotel. This hotel has a very famous ghost residing in its Presidential Suite. At 10:30 P.M. on June 20, 1947 Benjamin Bugsy Siegel a well-known gangster was shot and killed at his girlfriend’s home in Beverly Hills, California.

Siegel rose from the poverty-ridden slums of Brooklyn, New York to become a famous racketeer. Ben as he liked to be called, was tall, charming, athletic and handsome. He had the gift of gab, was a sharp dresser and it was said his piercing blue eyes were fearless. From his early teens Siegel was a successful criminal.

Siegel was also the classic textbook sociopath. He took what he wanted without a thought for his victims. He was a master manipulator of people. He had a long history of robbery, rape and murder. His fellow criminals dubbed him Bugsy because he was known to take jobs others wouldn’t take. He became the mob’s most feared hit man. Bugsy is a fitting nickname because Siegel often would go bugs with anger if others crossed him.

Yet Siegel is not remembered for his crimes but for his flamboyant lifestyle, which included many mob connections and Hollywood friends. He is also remembered because he was one of the first to see the opportunity that Las Vegas, Nevada presented. Because of this his name is synonymous with gambling in Las Vegas. But it would be his association with this town that caused his death.

Siegel seeing Vegas’ potential convinced his mob and Hollywood friends to invest in a project that he assured them would result in quick profits. He started to build a hotel/casino called the Flamingo. The project turned into a money pit costing over 6 million dollars. This drained his mob friends treasury dry. To add insult to injury his mob friends back east, including Meyer Lansky, learned that Siegel was skimming money from the building budget and putting it in numbered Swiss bank accounts.

The mob decided to put a hit out on Siegel. Lansky, who was a close friend of Siegel because Bugsy had saved his neck on several occasions in the past convinced the Syndicate to hold off. He convinced them that the Flamingo was going to be a moneymaker therefore they could get their money back. At its first opening the Flamingo flopped but months later when Siegel reopened the hotel it was a success. But this did not save his life. To this day it is not known if the Syndicate fulfilled the hit contract they had out on Siegel or if other enemies had him killed. His murder was done mob style. The Syndicate did take over the Flamingo after Siegel’s death.

Las Vegas is no longer owned by the mob. The Hilton Corporation owns the Flamingo Hotel and Casino today. In 1997 the Flamingo celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is the fourth largest hotel in the world with more than 3,500 guest rooms. Siegel was not mentioned during the anniversary celebration. As one writer put it:

“…the lesson that the life of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel imparts on us: a killer with a good idea is, after all, just another bum.”

But the sightings of Siegel’s ghost indicate that he is pleased that his predictions for Las Vegas came true. Since his death, many witnesses have seen Siegel’s ghost at the Flamingo Hotel. For four years before his death in Beverly Hills, Bugsy lived in the Presidential Suite at the Flamingo. Guests that have stayed in this room have reported many strange encounters.

Moving cold spots are reported and objects vanish or are moved around the suite. Witnesses have seen his apparition in the bathroom and near the suite’s pool table. It is reported that he appears to be happy and content to still be present. Some witnesses state he looks to be pleased about something. Maybe he is happy that Las Vegas turned out how he envisioned it.

Casinos are an aspect of human culture by now. They have become a popular form of entertainment for many people, offering a variety of games and experiences. Many lives were made and lost at a casino table. As the industry continues to evolve with advancements in technology and changing consumer preferences, ever-growing in the online world. The Design

A History of Crime

Casinos have been linked to organized crime, with early casinos in Las Vegas and Macau dominated by the American Mafia and Triad syndicates. In fact, studies have showed that crime incidence at a local level often doubles or triples within three years of a casino’s opening.

A 2004 US Department of Justice report found that the percentage of problem gamblers among arrested individuals was three to five times higher than in the general population. Economic studies showing a positive relationship between casinos and crime often fail to consider the visiting population, overstating the crime rate. This methodology is used due to the lack of reliable data on tourist count.

The Rise of Online Casinos

The online gambling industry began with the launch of “The Gaming Club” in 1994, powered by Microgaming, and the first online poker room, “Planet Poker,” in 1996. The early years were marked by controversy due to unregulated practices, leading to issues like lack of fair play and money laundering. In the late 1990s, Antigua and Barbuda passed the first online gambling legislation, allowing for casino licensing and paving the way for industry growth.

The industry continued to grow in the early 2000s, with more countries passing legislation to regulate and legalize it. ☝️ request to me was to get his stories out there. That is why I work so hard getting on the history of my Dad and the SR 71 out as much as I do because it was his last request .

My father was a navigator /bombardier in the B- 47. Remember that movie “Strategic Air Command”with Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson? Yes, that is the movie that my parents watched on their first movie date..This movie introduced B- 47 as the newest fastest bomber in the world. This aircraft was ready for serious business, armed with a MK 28 1.1 Mt atomic bomb.

My parents Dad, Richard Sheffield, and my mother, Rosie Chard, met each other on a blind date in Sacramento, California. Dad had a really nice bright red Oldsmobile that he bought the day he graduated from Cadets.

He had sold an old car a few years before while he was a college student at Wheaton. With no plans to get married and certainly no plans to start a family, the monthly payments were hefty. He wanted to treat himself with the car of his dreams. He agreed to go on the blind date reluctantly because his Buddy did not have a car. My mother also did not want to go on a blind date. Neither one of them had ever been on one before. A blind date is when you’re set up by your friends to go out with a stranger that your friends approve of but you’ve never met. When Dad saw my Mother, he knew she was the one for him. It was love at first sight. My mother had an excellent job as a secretary at Procter & Gamble. She was also going to modeling school. She looked like a movie star; after dating each other for four months, they eloped and got married at Reno,Nevada.

A year went by..My young parents are both 23 years old when they were anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child. ( myself) Alone in a southern town without any family the agreement was my mother and the baby would stay in the hospital until my father came back from flying bomb runs in Europe.

The Air Force could not wait for my mother to go into natural labor. This was a matter of national security. The doctors induced my mother into early labor, so that my father could see his firstborn child before he left for two weeks. The Air Force song I heard thousands of times during my childhood starts like this ….🎼off we go into the wild blue yonder flying high into the sky.

It was my destiny and honor to be born into the wild blue yonder. The Air Force was new and B 47 was new, and so was I.

When the alpha arrives at that place he is greeted with a pleasant smell of milk that is all over the house, curious about the aroma he discovers that it comes from the living room and when he enters the room he is surprised to see his childhood friend and love interest breastfeeding a blue-eyed, jet-haired baby. Mika married Guren and they had a child!? Yuuichiro can't help but feel jealous.

Summary:  “At 8 in the morning, Mikaela was the first to leave the apartment.  The light was much clearer at that hour, so Yuichiro allowed himself a peek into the living room.  He started looking around the walls, being attracted by the picture frames that, for some reason, were turned around; he approached one of them and held it in his hands. In front of his eyes, there was nothing more and nothing less than a photograph of him, one in which he apparently held a cheerful expression next to Mikaela;  they were both sitting on the grass somewhere that he cannot determine, but what caught his attention the most in the photograph was that between their intertwined hands, they both wear a pair of matching rings on their ring finger. 

The emotions evoked were nameless: surprise?, nostalgia?, confusion?, surprise? People had already warned him about the relationship he used to have with Mikaela, but he didn’t expect that seeing a photograph would shake his feelings so much.  He wanted to cry of sheer frustration at that moment, but he stopped himself.  After all, there was no use in thinking about what it was.” 

[Or, Mikayuu have been victims of amnesia shortly before their wedding. Maybe it was an opportunity to reconsider their choices?]

Summary:  On his way back from a funeral, Mika finds a black cat abandoned in a carton box with the name “Yuuichirou Hyakuya” scribbled on it. He takes the cat home, unaware that he is about to be swindled of all his cash in under 24 hours… If Yuu can sneak away without “the cat getting out of the bag”, that is. (AKA yuu can turn into a cat but his attempts to steal from mika and run away are thwarted by circumstances time and time again)

That person is Yuuichiro Amane, the towns local mechanic. 

Mikaela immediately drops all of his work to follow Yu around. And whilst leaving secret notes for eachother, Mikaela and Yuuichiro build a relationship. Only problem: Mikaela isn’t sure how to reveal his identity. 

Will being Cupid interfere with their love lives? Or will true love prevail?

Summary: Yuuichirou Amane is a powerful necromancer, and he wishes more than anything that he was not. He keeps his powers a secret from the Hyakuya Church - the religious organization that took him in after an accident that killed his parents - and from his best friend Mikaela, another orphan taken in by the Church. Seven years after coming to the Hyakuya Church, Yuuichirou is sent on a mission with Mikaela, but their small caravan is attacked en route by vampires, and Mikaela is killed in combat. Witnessing this, Yuuichirou has a necromantic meltdown that kills the remaining vampires and priests in the caravan…and revives Mikaela as a vampire. The two are taken in by Guren Ichinose, a necromancer who used to serve the Yuuichirou’s family as his tutor, who has been in hiding with his partner, Shinya, since the fire incident. A necromancer creating a vampire is an unprecedented occurrence, and so the two are tasked with researching connections between vampires and necromancers and experimenting together to test the rules of this strange new magic.

Being stuck together in an elaborate Gothic magic library-turned-laboratory brings up some issues between the two that can no longer be avoided, and the fallout leads to some exciting sensual discoveries.

Despite his biological parents abandoning him when he was one years old, William never lived without love. Adopted soon after, William was raised by Percy and Simon York in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was definitely an untraditional upbringing and being raised by two father’s was only a small portion of that. The biggest portion was that Will’s fathers own a popular casino and resort in the heart of Vegas. Lesser known than the big names, Franny’s Resort & Casino (named after Percy’s mother) was a lively place to grow up and exposed Will to all sorts of folks, especially the ones who had extended stays. William’s childhood was filled with fun and probably too much attention from his Dads, both of them always worried about him not having a traditional childhood and the bullying he experienced from his peers around their presence in his life. But Will hardly let it phase him, always pretty aligned with his morals and also much more interested in the gossip and going ons of the casino than anything else. It was in running through the casino (with the watchful eyes of security guards and trusted companions) that Will found his one true love: money. 

Will never really knew what it was to be without money but that didn’t decrease his obsession in the slightest. He loved the life his fathers had given him, but he was much more reserved than them, a bit more private with his emotions and aspirations. He was a quiet and quick study as a kid attached himself to the hips of many of the folks who worked the tables and slots and taught him the ins and outs of each game. Percy and Simon’s favorite party trick would be when a young Will would beat everyone at poker without even flinching. It made them proud of him instead of worrying about what it would lead to. They supported him in whatever he wanted to do and were grateful that their lifestyle hadn’t led him towards resentment but celebration. 

But a bit after William’s 12th birthday, Simon was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In an effort to have a slower life, Percy and Simon moved the family to nearby Tonopah Valley and left the casino and resort in the care of their trusted staff. Percy would still travel back and forth but for the most part, the York family stepped into a slowed down version of life for William’s teen years. So, of course he was bored out of his mind. Percy and Simon weren’t so taken with the idea but it was also through Syd that Will learned that Franny’’s Casino and Resort had been doing work for the Sons for years. They had done it so well that even Will, who lived on site, had been completely oblivious to it. But it was what made him realize that maybe he had just naturally fallen into the family business. 

So he made a deal with Simon and Percy and he did two years of community college to get his Associates degree in finance before he officially became a prospect at the age of 21 with one of Syd’s brothers as his sponsor. And William, who had become pretty okay with being an only child, realized for the first time in his life what he had been missing out on. Turning his love of money into a love of seeing the Sons thrive was easy to do, especially when it was something he didn’t have to hide from his family. If anything they encouraged him, and felt comfortable that in some way they could still look out for him and still maintain an honest and supportive relationship with their son. The first time his MC patch frayed, it was Simon that helped sew it back on and it’s not unusual for Will to bring folks from the MC over the house to hang, especially in the summer. 

Will got his job at the Vineyard as a way to have some separation from his normal life. Quite simply put: William loves his life and while his first love used to be money, his true love is his family. Simon and Percy but also the Sons of Silence and there is no doubt that he lives for them and would die for them without hesitation. 

Will has had his sights set on being the SOS Treasurer since he was a prospect. It was the only job he ever wanted, knowing that he could double the MC’s profit if someone would just let him get his hands on the books. So when the current Treasurer was arrested, Will didn’t waste any time in putting his name in the ring to be next up. He takes pride in his work and takes even more pride in his brothers seeing the profit of their hard labor.
