In Transmogrify!, you’ll embark on fourteen different adventures alongside unforgettable characters who embody many different genders and expressions and experiences—because magic is for everyone, and that is cause for celebration.
Featuring stories from: AR Capetta and Cory McCarthy g. haron davis Mason Deaver Jonathan Lenore Kastin Emery Lee Saundra Mitchell Cam Montgomery Ash Nouveau Sonora Reyes Renee Reynolds Dove Salvatierra Ayida Shonibar Francesca Tacchi Nik Traxler
Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee Dylan Tang wants to win a Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake-making competition for teen chefs—in memory of his mom, and to bring much-needed publicity to his aunt’s struggling Chinese takeout in Brooklyn.
Enter Theo Somers: charming, wealthy, with a smile that makes Dylan’s stomach do backflips. AKA a distraction. Their worlds are sun-and-moon apart, but Theo keeps showing up. He even convinces Dylan to be his fake date at a family wedding in the Hamptons.
In Theo’s glittering world of pomp, privilege, and crazy rich drama, their romance is supposed to be just pretend . . . but Dylan finds himself falling for Theo. For real. Then Theo’s relatives reveal their true colors—but with the mooncake contest looming, Dylan can’t risk being sidetracked by rich-people problems. Can Dylan save his family’s business and follow his heart—or will he fail to do both?
Hurt You by Marie Myung-Ok Lee
Moving beyond the quasi-fraternal bond of the unforgettable George and Lenny from Of Mice and Men, Hurt You explores the actual sibling bond of Georgia and Leonardo da Vinci Daewoo Kim, who has an unnamed neurological disability that resembles autism. The themes of race, disability, and class spin themselves out in a suburban high school where the Kim family has moved in order to access better services for Leonardo. Suddenly unmoored from the familiar, including the support of her Aunt Clara, Georgia struggles to find her place in an Asian-majority school where whites still dominate culturally, and she finds herself feeling not Korean “enough.” Her one pole star is her commitment to her brother, a loyalty that finds itself at odds with her immigrant parents’ dreams for her, and an ableist, racist society that may bring violence to Leonardo despite her efforts to keep him safe.
Hurt You is a deep exploration of family, society, and the bond between siblings and reflects the reality that people with intellectual disabilities are far more likely to be the victim of a violent crime, not the perpetrator.
Last Canto for the Dead (Outlaw Saints #2) by Daniel José Older
Two gods-turned-teenagers wage simultaneous battles in the Caribbean and Brooklyn in this sequel to Ballad & Dagger.
Healer. Destroyer. Creator. Mateo Matisse and Chela Hidalgo are not just two teenagers in love–they’re powerful gods in human form. Powerful enough to have saved their Brooklyn diaspora community from the wrath of an ancient enemy and to have raised their once-sunken native island of San Madrigal from the sea. But soon they discover that their problems are far from over. On the shores of San Madrigal, two creature armies are battling for survival. And on the streets of Brooklyn, a once tight-knit community is divided, with two sides at each other’s throats. But worst of all, a heartbreaking prophecy rips these two young lovers apart, sending Mateo back to the city, where cops are now patrolling the streets, and keeping Chela tethered to the island, where chaos and death lurk around every corner.
Healer. Destroyer. Creator. As gods, their powers know no limits. But as teenagers–separated, desperate, grieving–what will become of them? And what will become of their people? Join their battle and witness their love in this thrilling conclusion to the epic saga that began with BALLAD & DAGGER.
Venom & Vow by Anna-Marie McLemore and Elliott McLemore Keep your enemy closer. Cade McKenna is a transgender prince who’s doubling for his brother. Valencia Palafox is a young dama attending the future queen of Eliana. Gael Palma is the infamous boy assassin Cade has vowed to protect. Patrick McKenna is the reluctant heir to a kingdom, and the prince Gael has vowed to destroy.
Cade doesn’t know that Gael and Valencia are the same person. Valencia doesn’t know that every time she thinks she’s fighting Patrick, she’s fighting Cade. And when Cade and Valencia blame each other for a devastating enchantment that takes both their families, neither of them realizes that they have far more dangerous enemies.
Rubi Ramos’s Recipe for Success by Jessica Parra Graduation is only a few months away, and so far Rubi Ramos’s recipe for success is on track.
*Step 1: Get into the prestigious Alma University. *Step 2: Become incredibly successful lawyer. But when Alma waitlists Rubi’s application, her plan is in jeopardy. Her parents–especially her mom, AKA the boss–have wanted this for her for years. In order to get off the waitlist without her parents knowing, she needs math tutoring from surfer-hottie math genius Ryan, lead the debate team to a championship–and remember the final step of the recipe.
*Step 3: Never break the ban on baking. Rubi has always been obsessed with baking, daydreaming up new concoctions and taking shifts at her parents’ celebrated bakery. But her mother dismisses baking as a distraction–her parents didn’t leave Cuba so she could bake just like them.
But some recipes are begging to be tampered with… When the First Annual Bake Off comes to town, Rubi’s passion for baking goes from subtle simmer to full boil. She’s not sure if she has what it takes to become OC’s best amateur baker, and there’s only one way to find out–even though it means rejecting the ban on baking, and by extension, her parents. But life is what you bake it, and now Rubi must differentiate between the responsibility of unfulfilled dreams she holds, and finding the path she’s meant for.
As Long As We’re Together by Brianna Peppins A heartstring-tugging, uplifting, modern spin on Party of Five — a love letter to family, hope, and finding strength in unexpected places.
Even though she has six siblings, sixteen-year-old Novah still knows what it’s like to feel lonely. Her friends never remember to invite her anywhere because they assume Novah will be too busy overseeing dinner, baths, and homework — tasks that fall to her when her parents are at work. She wouldn’t mind it so much if her “perfect” older sister, Ariana, wasn’t always excused from helping out. She’s the star of the volleyball team, and their parents don’t want anything to jeopardize the scholarships she’ll need to become the first member of their family to attend college.
Needless to say, Novah feels like she’s been given a raw deal, especially when she’s forced to cancel a maybe-date with her crush, Hailee. Then one terrible night, their parents don’t make it back home. A car accident takes their lives and leaves seven heartbroken kids on their own. The Wilkinson siblings have no grandparents, no aunts or uncles. Since Ariana has just turned eighteen, she manages to convince the judge to give her temporary custody. If she can keep her family running smoothly, they’ll get to stay in their home. If not, they’ll be placed into foster care.
Novah will do whatever it takes to keep her family together but finds herself in a constant power struggle when Ariana refuses to take her advice, even once it becomes clear that they are all in way over their heads. Will Novah find her voice and summon the strength to do the impossible? Or will she be forced to say the hardest goodbyes of all?

— spotted in the streets of brooklyn, it’s MATILDA MASON. they have lived in the city for THIRTY YEARS, working as a SURGICAL RESIDENT. the 30 year old will probably be seen around PARK SLOPE a lot, seeing as that’s where they live. people say they can be a bit SKITTISH and SELF CRITICAL, but friends know them to be ARTICULATE and AMBITIOUS. you know for sure you’ve found them when you’ve come across PENCILS WITH CHEWED ENDS, LOUDLY SUNG SHOW TUNES, AND SELF TRIMMED BANGS. welcome to brooklyn, it’s been waiting for you!
Anxiety tw, panic attack tw
Matilda was born in New York City as the third child in the Mason family. A loving family but she watched her older siblings excel in the medical field when she was younger and it didn’t take long for her to decide she wanted to explore the same career path. Only problem was Matilda was your classic case of a perfectionist and thus weighed herself down with an immense level of expectation to excel to the top of everything she did. Grades ruled her life long before they should have been important, after all no one expects a third grader to burst into tears over one B. Still it was okay because she was a naturally curious child so reading everything and anything she could get her hands on was what she wanted to be doing anyway, it allowed her to escape into fantasy worlds and fill her brain with facts, she almost found it addictive.
Graduating top of her class in high school she left New York in order to attend Yale University. So she didn’t go far, only to Connecticut, a two hour drive is hardly groundbreaking. Still while she was there Matilda applied herself so intently to her schoolwork she would only really come home a couple of times a year. Christmas, maybe in the summer where she’d spend her time practicing sutures with her older brother on lemons, but mostly she was there with her head in a book with ambitions to become Valedictorian, something she succeeded in. Her speech at the graduation ceremony full of hope and optimism for where her future was going to go, large brown eyes bright with excitement. Ready to go off an begin her residency program in general surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital with the aim of eventually specialising in Neurological Surgery.
With an apartment not far from her family in Brooklyn and being able to reconnect with them after her stint at medical school, Matilda was in a good place. Thriving at work enjoying being in her element. At least that’s how it was at the beginning, until those self applied expectations got heavier on her shoulders, weighing her down to an almost impossible level. Nights where she stayed up late turned into not going to bed at all, being diligent about her patients became an obsessive need to be across every element of their care, an impossible task in itself, but still she pushed forward determined that it was just a blip and soon she would return to herself.
That wasn’t to be the case.
November 11th 2024 she was in the operating room assisting on a routine Anterior cervical discectomy when everything started to crash down around her. Not literally, but it did literally cause her to crash down onto the floor in a heap. Her blood pressure soaring she was taken into a patient room to be checked over, all the while begging her colleagues not to tell her family about anything that was happening. And from there is just got worse. Panic attacks, her hands shaking uncontrollably, burning into tears for no apparent reason, becoming physically sick under the stress she’d put her body under for so long. Matilda was signed off on sick leave until she was cleared by the board - something she still hasn’t told her family. As far as they know she’s still working her shifts at Mount Sinai and everything is going according to plan. They know nothing of the mandatory psychology examinations she’s had to take or the therapy sessions she’s attending. The way her blood boils because she’s literally trained to fix the human brain, and yet hasn’t got the tools to do it for herself, no matter how many books she’s reading about it.
Overall Matilda is a sweet, if slightly intense, young woman. Scrappy in that she cuts her own hair, has a love for musical theatre you wouldn’t see coming, and prides herself on focusing on the care of her friends over herself at all times. She loves to bake, often known for bringing treats into the hospital for her coworkers or bringing cakes to family events, it’s calming for her. The process of putting together a recipe with its precise measurements. She finds comfort in knowing what’s coming. From her bright smile and kind disposition you'd never know on first glance that she's trapped inside her own internal prison. She'd rather snap again than have it impact those she loves, that's for sure.

H E A D C A N O N S
maddie is the youngest of three, born and raised in san diego. daughter of a psychologist with a phd and a divorce lawyer, emotions were always talked through. however maddie never truly thought hers were as valid as the rest of her family's.
with a 10 year gap between her and her older brother, ethan, maddie always looked up to him. he was always the golden son, straight a student and quarterback that got him a scholarship to ucla. after that, there was med school, a surgical residency and a family of four.
she worked really hard throughout her teenage years to get in her dream school and follow her brother's footsteps. in high school she was the cheer captain and the president of the fashion club that she founded herself. while academically she didn't have the same aspirations as her brother, as the youngest she was also allowed to dream out of the box.
fashion and arts had always been something maddie loved from a young age. it was normal to find her painting or sweing outfits for herself, sometimes for her sister.
amber and maddie never saw eye to eye and would spend days fighting. amber was always a free spirit in the family and very opinionated. maddie would often dime her light to let her sister shine.
by the time she graduated high school, maddie had gone through a bad break up that changed a lot of the way she thought. she ended up deferring from her first year in ucla and against all odds, she went backpacking across the globe.
from southest asia to australia where she stayed for longer than she anticipated and lived to the fullest, away from all the expectations of home. her last stop was south africa for a month before heading to south america where she volunteered teaching english at schools and learned spanish fluently.
by the time she returned to the us, she had found her own person and went to college to study fashion. it was during this time that she got closer to her sister and after she graduated, they both moved in together in a little apartment in santa monica.
the fashion job market was really hard to get in and maddie started working in social media, styling small influencers for exposure and doing content creation on the side herself. it didn't work out the way she thought it would and she ended up working for a social media agency for 2 years.
she was almost giving up when the dream opportunity found her and she moved to new york city to be an assistant at a fashion magazine known world wide.
living in the city for the last 2 years with a roommate that has become like a sister, teagan wilds, less than a hour away from her brother and her twin nieces, maddie can't complain about her life right now. she's waiting on a promotion to become a stylist at the magazine but she wants to keep herself grounded in case it doesn't happen as soon as she's expecting it.

Breaking Into Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Technology
Exploring Elon Musk's Competition
Tumblr media
Are you fascinated by the remarkable advancements in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and Elon Musk's venture, Neuralink?
BCIs is evolving rapidly, and it's essential to understand the landscape before diving into the intricacies of this cutting-edge field.
Elon Musk's Neuralink Milestone
Elon Musk recently made headlines by announcing the successful implantation of Neuralink's brain chip, aptly named "telepathy," into a human patient. This achievement marks a significant step towards Musk's vision of enabling individuals to control electronic devices using their thoughts.
Despite the buzz surrounding Neuralink's breakthrough, it's important to recognize that the field of BCIs has been active for over two decades, with several other players making notable strides in the development of similar technologies.
Meet the Competition
Let's take a closer look at some of the notable players in the BCI arena, each contributing distinct innovations and applications to this transformative field:
1. Blackrock
- Blackrock Neurotech, established in 2008, has been a key player in the BCI domain, pioneering the Utah Array, an implantable electrode smaller than a thumbnail. Their devices have empowered individuals with severe forms of paralysis to regain independence by controlling devices and accessing the internet using their thoughts.
2. BrainGate
- BrainGate, a consortium that originated from Brown University's research in the late 1990s, introduced the first implanted BCI for human use in 2004. Their devices, about the size of a baby aspirin, have enabled paralyzed individuals to communicate and even play video games through the power of their thoughts.
3. Synchron
- Synchron, based in Brooklyn, has developed a minimally invasive BCI called the stentrode, successfully implanted in several individuals globally. This innovative BCI sits inside the blood vessels of the head, transmitting brain signals wirelessly to control devices, presenting a unique approach to BCI technology.
4. Academic Institutions
- Numerous universities and research institutions worldwide are also at the forefront of BCI research, conducting one-off surgeries and trials to explore the potential of BCIs in enhancing the lives of individuals with paralysis and other neurological conditions.
 What Neuralink Must Prove
While Neuralink's recent achievement is indeed remarkable, it's crucial to acknowledge that the company is at the initial stages of operationalizing its BCI technology. Successfully enabling individuals to control devices using their thoughts is just the beginning of a longer journey.
The competition in the BCI space is robust, with each player offering distinct technological innovations and addressing unique applications and user needs. As Neuralink and its counterparts continue to push the boundaries of BCI technology, it's imperative to closely monitor their progress and the impact of their innovations on individuals with neurological conditions.
Final Thoughts
The emergence of BCI technology presents a promising frontier in the intersection of neuroscience, medicine, and technology. As Musk and his contemporaries strive to harness the potential of BCIs, the future of these innovations holds the promise of significantly enhancing the quality of life for individuals with paralysis and other neurological challenges.
As the field of BCIs continues to evolve, it's an exciting time for tech enthusiasts and professionals to witness and contribute to the transformation of this groundbreaking technology.
So, are you ready to delve deeper into the world of brain-computer interface technology and witness the unfolding innovations that could reshape the future of human-computer interaction? The journey may be complex, but the potential rewards are undoubtedly worth the exploration.

How to Secure Competitive Rotations for International Medical Students in the USA
Tumblr media
If you are an international medical student who wants to pursue a career in the US healthcare system, you might be wondering how to secure competitive rotations that can enhance your chances of matching into a residency program of your choice.
Clinical rotations are an essential part of medical education that allow you to apply your theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and gain exposure to different specialties and patient populations. However, finding and applying for clinical rotations in the US can be a challenging and time-consuming process, especially for international medical students who have to deal with various requirements, eligibility criteria, and challenges.
In this blog post, I will share with you some tips and strategies on how to find and apply for the best clinical rotations for international medical students in USA.
What are clinical rotations and why are they important?
Clinical rotations are short-term (usually 4 weeks) clinical experiences that allow medical students to explore different specialties or subspecialties under the guidance of a preceptor, who is a licensed physician or a resident.
Know more: best medical doctor in brooklyn 11213
Clinical rotations can be divided into two types: core rotations and elective rotations. Core rotations are mandatory rotations that cover the basic medical disciplines such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, etc.
Tumblr media
Elective rotations are optional rotations that allow students to choose a specialty or subspecialty of their interest such as cardiology, neurology, dermatology, radiology, etc.
Clinical rotations are important for several reasons. First, they help you improve your clinical skills such as history taking, physical examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, procedures, etc., by giving you the opportunity to practice them in real-world settings.
Second, they help you learn about the US healthcare system and culture by exposing you to different types of hospitals, clinics, patients, and colleagues.
Third, they help you network with potential mentors and colleagues who can provide you with valuable feedback, guidance, and support.
Fill the Patient registration form for Clinical Rotations
Fourth, they help you earn letters of recommendation (LoRs) from your preceptors, which are crucial for your residency application.
Fifth, they help you prepare for the USMLE exams by familiarizing you with the clinical scenarios and questions that you might encounter.
What are the requirements and eligibility criteria for clinical rotations in the USA?
To apply for clinical rotations for international medical students in usa, you need to meet certain requirements and eligibility criteria depending on the type of rotation and the program or institution that you choose. Some of the common requirements include:
Academic performance: You need to have a good academic record and GPA in your medical school. Some programs or institutions may also require you to have passed or taken the USMLE Step 1 exam or equivalent.
Letter of enrollment or good standing: You need to have a letter from your medical school that confirms your enrollment status and good standing. The letter should also state that you have completed or are currently enrolled in the required core rotations in your home country.
Health records: You need to have proof of immunization against certain diseases such as hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, etc., before you can start your clinical rotation in the US. You also need to have a negative test result for tuberculosis (TB) or a chest X-ray if you have a history of TB.
You should check the specific requirements of the program or institution that you are applying for and make sure that you have all the necessary vaccinations and tests done in advance. You can use online platforms like Passport Health or Travel Clinics of America to find out what immunizations and tests you need and where to get them.
Malpractice insurance: You need to have malpractice insurance that covers you for any potential liability claims that might arise from your clinical rotation in the US. Malpractice insurance is a type of professional liability insurance that protects you from lawsuits or damages that might result from your negligence, errors, or omissions while providing medical care. Some programs or institutions may provide malpractice insurance for their students or allow them to purchase it through them.
Criminal background check: You need to have a criminal background check that verifies your identity and criminal history in your home country and any other country that you have lived in for more than six months. A criminal background check is a report that shows whether you have any criminal records or convictions such as felonies, misdemeanors, arrests, warrants, etc. Some programs or institutions may require you to submit a certified copy of your criminal background check along with your application.
Others may ask you to complete an online form or questionnaire that authorizes them to conduct a criminal background check on you. You should check the specific requirements and procedures of the program or institution that you are applying for and make sure that you have a clean and clear criminal background check before applying. You can use online platforms like Certiphi Screening or Sterling Volunteers to order and obtain your criminal background check.
These are some of the common requirements and eligibility criteria for clinical rotations for international medical students in usa. However, they may vary depending on the type of rotation and the program or institution that you choose. Therefore, it is important to do thorough research and compare different options before applying for any rotation. You should also prepare and submit all the required documentation in advance and follow up with the program coordinators or preceptors regularly and politely.

New York City Schools Handcuff and Haul Away Kids in Mental Crisis — Even 5-Year-Olds
en New York City Schools Handcuff and Haul Away Kids in Mental Crisis — Even 5-Year-Olds An investigation by THE CITY and ProPublica found that New York City schools continue to call on safety agents and other police officers to manage students in distress and unless a parent arrives in time to intercede, cops hand kids off to EMTs, who take students to hospital emergency rooms for psychiatric evaluations. By ProPublica 20 nyc schools kids mental crisis feature /*Miss a day, miss a lot.* Subscribe to The Defender's Top News of the Day . *It's free.*/ *By Abigail Kramer* It was almost time for school pickup when Paul’s mom saw the text on the classroom messaging app: Paul — her 7-year-old — “ended up running out of class today and it escalated rather quickly.” Someone at the school had called 911. Paul’s parents could contact the main office for more information, the message read. Paul’s mom remembers the physical feeling of dread, like ice under her skin. Paul — that’s his middle name — has a neurological disorder. He loves to cuddle with his mom and help take care of his baby sister, and he’s wild about Greek mythology. Like a lot of kids with developmental disabilities, he also has very big tantrums, hitting, spitting and throwing things when he gets upset. Since the end of first grade, he’s been in a special public school classroom in Brooklyn that integrates disabled and nondisabled kids. The day of the message, in early December, Paul’s mom was so panicked that she couldn’t fully make sense of what it said. Why had the school called 911 instead of calling her? Was her child hurt? Had something gone terribly wrong? She wanted to run the last few blocks to the school, but her legs felt frozen. It was hard just to walk. When she made it into the school building, she found Paul lying facedown on the floor of a computer room, his whole body heaving with sobs. She touched his back, and he screamed and tried to scramble away. Then he recognized his mother’s voice and jumped into her arms. “Mommy, don’t let them handcuff me,” he begged. “I said, ‘What are you talking about? No one is going to handcuff you.’” But that’s when she found out: Someone already had. That afternoon, Paul had a meltdown that started in his classroom and spilled into a hallway. When he didn’t calm down, someone called a school safety agent — an officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD) who is stationed full-time in the building. Paul knocked off the agent’s face mask and glasses, and that’s when it happened. The agent pulled out a pair of Velcro restraints and forced them over Paul’s hands. Looking now, Paul’s mom could see red marks where the handcuffs had rubbed Paul’s wrists raw. But she felt more bewildered than ever. She must be misunderstanding, she thought. Who would handcuff a 7-year-old? New York City officials have promised for years to stop relying on police to respond to students in emotional crisis . Under the terms of a 2014 legal settlement, schools are only supposed to call 911 in the most extreme situations, when kids pose an “imminent and substantial risk of serious injury” to themselves or others. And yet an investigation by THE CITY and ProPublica found that city schools continue to call on safety agents and other police officers to manage students in distress thousands of times each year — incidents the NYPD calls “child in crisis” interventions. Unless a parent arrives in time to intercede, cops hand kids off to EMTs, who take students to hospital emergency rooms (ER) for psychiatric evaluations. In close to 1,370 incidents since 2017, students ended up in handcuffs while they waited for an ambulance to arrive, according to NYPD data. In several incidents, those kids were 5 or 6 years old. *Schools called the police on students in emotional distress thousands of times* Note: 2017 is the first year that the New York Police Department released data on all incidents where a school employee called 911 over a student in emotional distress, known as child-in-crisis incidents. Data Source: NYPD quarterly School Safety Act report. Credit: Lucas Waldron, ProPublica Ten years ago, in the runup to the 2014 settlement, a group of parents sued the city’s Department of Education, claiming that schools violated their children’s constitutional rights and broke federal law by sending them to hospitals when they weren’t experiencing medical emergencies — in many cases in response to behavior that resulted directly from a student’s disability. The experience was traumatic and humiliating for the kids, the plaintiffs claimed. Students were terrified to return to school; 6- and 7-year-olds thought they were being arrested. Two schools filed child welfare reports on parents who didn’t allow EMTs to put their children in ambulances. Meanwhile, the hospital visits served no useful purpose, plaintiffs claimed. Students missed crucial class time only to wait for hours in the ER — sometimes with seriously mentally ill adults — and then be sent home. At least one parent lost her job because she was repeatedly forced to leave work to rush to the hospital, and then she was stuck with bills for ambulance trips and ER services her child didn’t need. As part of the 2014 settlement, the Department of Education issued a regulation that requires schools to make every effort to safely manage students in distress without involving police — including by deploying trained crisis response teams and allowing parents to speak to their children by phone if possible. Schools are never allowed to use 911 calls as a punishment for misbehavior. When cops do get involved, they must use the “minimum level of restraint necessary .” Despite the promises and regulations, New York City public schools call 911 on students in emotional distress as often as ever, an analysis by THE CITY and ProPublica of NYPD data shows. Prior to the lawsuit, city-run and charter schools saw an average of 3,000 child-in-crisis incidents per year from 2005 to 2010 and an average of 3,300 incidents in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years, according to court documents. Since 2017 — the first post-lawsuit year for which the NYPD reported complete data — schools have seen an average of 3,200 incidents per year. (The analysis excludes 911 calls made in 2020 and 2021, when schools operated on a remote or hybrid schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.) Schools are far more likely to call 911 on Black students, who make up less than a quarter of the student body but account for nearly half of the child-in-crisis incidents and 59% of instances in which students were handcuffed since 2017, the analysis shows. And schools continue to call the police to respond to young children: Last year, more than 560 child-in-crisis incidents involved students aged 10 or younger. In five cases, the kids were 4 years old. *Black students are disproportionately handcuffed during child-in-crisis incidents* Black children, who make up a quarter of students in New York City schools, accounted for 59% of handcuffed students. Note: Data for all New York City child-in-crisis and handcuffing incidents covers 2017 to 2022. Data for student population demographics includes school years 2017-18 to 2021-22. Data Sources: New York City annual student enrollment snapshot and New York Police Department quarterly School Safety Act report. Credit: Lucas Waldron, ProPublica “The things that needed to change did not change,” said Nelson Mar, an education attorney at Legal Services NYC who represented the plaintiffs in the 2013 lawsuit. That’s partly because the Department of Education fails to hold schools accountable for not following its own regulations, Mar and other advocates said. Schools are required to file occurrence reports after calling 911 on students, but they don’t have to show that they took the mandatory steps to manage a crisis first. Unless parents have a lawyer or a paid advocate, they rarely know the reports exist, much less get the opportunity to contest a school’s account of an incident or to object if they believe school staff called 911 to punish a student they were fed up with. In an emailed statement, Department of Education spokesperson Nathaniel Styer wrote that, if parents believe a school called 911 in violation of city rules, they should contact their school district’s superintendent, who oversees school leaders and can provide additional training. “Situations where young children are in crisis and/or are at risk of harming themselves or others are among the most difficult for our educators and school staff,” Styer wrote. “Nevertheless,” Styer continued, “whenever there is evidence the policy hasn’t been followed, it will be reported and investigated, and we review every case where 911 is called to ensure that it was necessary and complied with our policy.” But thousands of children are still being forcibly removed from schools each year, which means the oversight clearly isn’t working, said Amber Decker, a public school parent who was a plaintiff in the 2013 lawsuit and now works as an advocate for parents of kids with disabilities. If schools were being held accountable for unnecessary 911 calls, “the numbers would have gone down,” Decker said. As it is, “there’s no consequences other than the ones you push for until you’re blue in the face or banging your head against the wall.” To understand why police are so involved in New York City schools, you have to look back to the late 1990s. Rudy Giuliani was mayor, and schools were at the junction of two of his biggest campaign promises: to slash crime and to fix the education system. For students, that meant a “zero tolerance” approach to school misconduct. In 1998, the city created a new division of the NYPD, transferring school safety operations — which had previously been managed by the Board of Education — to the police department. Agents were allowed to arrest students for all kinds of misbehavior, including spitting, talking back to teachers and cutting class. Eighteen years and two administrations later, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio presided over a city that approached young people and police very differently. According to a 2016 mayoral task force that included the commanding officer of the NYPD’s School Safety Division, overly punitive practices weren’t making students safer; they were pushing vulnerable kids out of schools and into the juvenile justice system. The task force pointed to child-in-crisis incidents as part of the problem. “With little mental health experience or training, and scant access to mental health professionals , ER overuse is the norm,” the task force wrote. De Blasio promised to transform the city’s approach to school discipline by reducing the role of police and dramatically increasing the mental health resources available to students and teachers. “We’re revolutionizing our school system ,” he said in 2019. The revolution never materialized. In 2021, after New York City students experienced some of the longest school shutdowns in the country, the city hired 500 new school-based social workers to help respond to trauma connected to the COVID-19 pandemic . De Blasio’s was “one of the first administrations to recognize that schools are where kids with mental health problems land,” said Peter Ragone, a longtime de Blasio adviser. But while the hiring push put the city ahead of many other jurisdictions, New York City schools still have just one social worker for every 475 students — close to double the National Association of Social Workers’ recommended ratio of 250 students per social worker . The city’s current mayor, Eric Adams, announced a sweeping mental health plan in March that includes a “Mental Health Continuum,” a project that was conceived under de Blasio and rolled out last year to connect schools directly to mental health clinics and mobile crisis teams. But Adams’s proposed city budget, released a month later, included no funding for the project. “It’s mind-boggling,” said Dawn Yuster, who directs the School Justice Project at the group Advocates for Children. “This would expedite care for young people with the most significant needs. If you’re going to say it, fund it.” The mayor’s office did not respond to questions about the Mental Health Continuum, but Patrick Gallahue, press secretary for the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, wrote in an emailed statement that a new teletherapy program for high schoolers will “connect even more young people with services by reaching them where they are.” Meanwhile, in 2022, City Council members acknowledged the need for more oversight of child-in-crisis incidents, introducing a bill that would have required school safety agents to document that school staff tried to de-escalate a crisis before involving police. But the bill never made it out of committee. (Neither Councilmember Diana Ayala nor Councilmember Rita Joseph, both of whom sponsored the bill, responded to requests for comment.) When school staff doesn’t get the support they need from mental health experts, they often resort to punishing kids for behaviors they can’t control, Yuster said. It might start with “calling parents every day about a student’s behavior. Then they up the ante, calling to say, ‘We’re suspending for five days, and next time we’re going to call EMS if this behavior continues,’” said Yuster. Not only do the escalating punishments violate city rules but they also destroy trust between students and schools, said Crystal Baker-Burr, an attorney who directs the Education Project at The Bronx Defenders, a nonprofit public defense agency. “Even if a school is at their wit’s end,” Baker-Burr said, “sending a student to the ER is not going to help the situation. Getting police involved, handcuffing them, it doesn’t make anything better at school the next day.” Three years ago, Baker-Burr saw the impact of 911 calls up close — on her 7-year-old nephew, Ethan. (Ethan’s family asked us to identify him by just his first name.) In 2019, Ethan was a second grader at P.S. 157 in the Bronx. He was a gentle and sweet kid at home, but he got overwhelmed and acted out at school, said his mom, Jacqueline De Jesus. He’d hit other kids or run out of the classroom. Sometimes he’d bite himself. This was before he was diagnosed with autism , and his parents were still trying to figure out what to do. De Jesus asked the school for help, she said, but teachers told her that Ethan didn’t need to be evaluated for educational services because his schoolwork was at grade level. Instead, De Jesus said, Ethan, who’s Black and Latino, got punished. Teachers yelled at him and sent him out of the classroom. He wasn’t allowed to join music or sports clubs or sign up for the after-school program. The school constantly called his parents to pick him up early. De Jesus felt like the message was clear. “They didn’t want to deal with him,” she said. It seemed like the school was making it as difficult as possible for Ethan to stay. P.S. 157’s principal did not respond to a request for comment. The Department of Education declined to comment on Ethan’s experience, even though De Jesus signed a release allowing it to share information with THE CITY and ProPublica. In April 2019, De Jesus got a phone call that shocked her. It was the school secretary, saying that an ambulance was on its way to take Ethan to the hospital. De Jesus was at work in Manhattan — a 40-minute cab ride away — so she called Baker-Burr, who went straight to the school. When she got there, Ethan was curled up in a ball underneath a desk, rocking back and forth and sobbing. His face was swollen and red from crying for so long. Two uniformed police officers were “standing over my very small nephew,” Baker-Burr said. “They were saying things like, ‘Don’t lie to us, Ethan. When you’re older, we could arrest you for things like this.’” Read the full article

"Yeah, tell me about it. I'm mostly from the city. Ain't too much about Brooklyn that translates to being out here in God's Country." There had been the years before Brooklyn, of course. But Ike didn't bother bringing that up. The only thing his history needed to contain, so far as anybody knew, was New York. "But we adapt, don't we?"
Clint wasn't exactly twitchy -- he could hold still for ages, Ike had noticed that about him -- but there was something endlessly unsettled about him. Restless under that skin, an itch, a paranoia, a hypervigilance. He'd mumble. He'd run his words together. He'd talk down into his chest and it would deepen his already low voice, almost to the point of it being unintelligible. There were plenty of reasons why that would be, but Ike knew of a few that seemed to overlay themselves easiest over Clint.
He'd seen it, in so many of his clients. Trying to make themselves inconspicuous, forever watchful for something to take a sudden turn into violence, talking quiet so they wouldn't be noticed. Yeah, it was all over Clint.
And Clint was undaunted to find that his first guess about the military wasn't right, asking again about what kind of leadership position Ike had held in the past, which was -- pretty fuckin' admirable. Most people were so allergic to not being right all the time that they'd give up, not ask anything else, prefer not to know at all rather than chance being wrong again. So Ike gave a little.
"I had addiction problems," he said. "Through most of my twenties. A little beyond. It messed my life up--" Ike breathed in, looked around at the trees, scanned for anything trying to sneak up on them. "So, so bad. The only thing that got me out of it was going through detox, a couple of times, and getting consistent help after." He rubbed at his elbow, the inside of it, though the old faded track marks were hidden under his long sleeves. "I stayed in the system and got work there and when the world fell, I was managing a place. A halfway house for people who were working on getting sober."
Tumblr media
Ike tucked away the strip of jerky he had left, saying, "We should get moving again. Being outside the walls like this you don't wanna stay still too long, but you know that." Ike tapped the head of his barbed-wire bat against the ground, grinding it a little before lifting it to his shoulder. "A lot of my guys, they had ... comorbidities, is what it was called. A fancy way to say that along with the need for the needle, there was other shit to deal with. Health stuff like liver conditions or neurological impairment or being hard of hearing."
He hitched up one side of his jeans. "Being out here with one other person, you gotta be able to trust that you're both on the same page."
"Yeah, y'could say something like that." Clint responded and watched as the other fed Luna the jerky which she was more than happy to accept, with the offer of food, Isaac would become a favorite in Luna's eyes. The salt was what worried Clint since so much was used to dehydrate the meat, but she should be okay with a couple pieces without getting diarrhea all night, something he was trying to avoid. Blue hues watched the other as he spoke of the experience from his childhood helping him in these end of times. "It was helpful at th'start, but moving further up north, y'gotta adapt what y'know, Southern Louisiana and West Virginia might as well be different countries in terms of th'land, th'climate, everythin'." Though he had to admit, having a point of reference to start from was helpful but to be honest the circumstances in which he came by that point of reference wasn't something he enjoyed reminiscing on.
Isaac was... a god damned enigma. To Clint he touted the line between being likeable and an asshole, those dark brown eyes of his always seemed to be looking right into your soul which set Clint on edge, he was the kind that had no filter and spoke his mind regardless of anything else, in normal circumstances Clint would appreciate that, but normal circumstances hadn't existed for he world for the past several years. Isaac, Ike... whatever he liked to be known as was a ticking time bomb to Clint and he wasn't quite sure how to approach.
A smile pulled at the corner of Clint's lips when Isaac denied any military involvement in his life, so he was waaaaay off after all, Clint didn't get the feeling he was lying. "Y'had to be in some sort'a leadership. Leading people in th'most dangerous profession here. Trustin' people to have each other's backs under pressure, not anyone can do that." He didn't know what it was, but leading came too naturally for him to not have come from the before times and while this world forced people to go outside their limits, some things couldn't be taught in so short a time.
And then his question came, seemingly out of the blue. At first he was confused, not picking up what the other was putting down but when he expanded on the question, he was glad there was no food for him to choke on. What made him think that? People questioning his deafness, that was something he anticipated, he couldn't help but overcompensate for that, but the drug abuse of his early to early-ish adulthood? He wasn't expecting that. Clint had an expansive history with drugs and alcohol, but it was something he had felt was so much a part of the 'him' of the past... maybe that wasn't one hundred percent the case, he would be lying if he didn't still have those urges, those demons pulling at him, he did better with alcohol, only drinking in moderation, keeping tabs on it during the few times he did drink, but in the back of his mind he knew it was only a matter of time when those demons would overwhelm him, he could only do his best to prolong that inevitable moment. He didn't know what he would do if he came across the harder stuff, the thought of both terrified him.
'I used to.' Isaac's words stuck out to him, he was an addict too? This guy who seemed to have so much confidence in himself? Upon closer inspection, he could see it, his tone was from experience, not condescending, not judgmental, not overly sympathetic, but from a place of deep understanding. Fuck... if he was lying... if this was all horse shit and he was being too naïve, this could really fuck him over.
Clint was quiet for a moment, trying to think of the best course of action, the best way to respond. 'Don't give too much, don't appear weak, don't make them doubt' kept repeating in his head. "Nah... never been to nothin' like that." While it was the truth, there was denial in it and he knew, with the others gaze boring down on him, there was no point in that. He chewed on the inside of his lower lip before he added. "End of th'world has a habit of makin' ya quit cold turkey. 'Least with most things..."

Difficulty falling asleep or insomnia is a common concern among both adults and children. The typical causes of insomnia are high levels of stress, excessive worry, anxiety, depression and use of certain medications. Proper sleep is crucial for good health, and vital for restoring mental acuity and maintaining a proper immune response. The good news is that chiropractic care in Brooklyn can improve quality of sleep.

BACKSTORY !
as an only child and having a rocky relationship with both of her parents, mariana constantly felt alone and secluded. if and when asked who raised her, she gives all the credit to her grandmother. her grandmother was always the one to look after her, care for her, and was always her biggest supporter and number one fan. life wasn’t too bad with her abuela around, but then of course her grandmother moved to california when she was 10 years old. but even with the distance, her grandmother became her biggest inspiration. she was strong, confident, ambitious, hard working, and truly beautiful. she embodied everything that mariana stood for and aspired to be, and she helped to mold mari into the woman she is today.
since then, it was every man, woman, and child for themselves. her parents, a hair stylist and a mechanic, drowned themselves in their work. her mother was always timid, a woman that never understood her true worth, one who always allowed men to claim her value and shit on her. mariana witnessed a lot of abuse towards her mother, and suffered from emotional and verbal abuse herself. it was safe to say their marriage was anything but healthy, causing them both to dedicate all of their time and energy to their work, and mariana was pretty much left on the back burner.
things only got more complicated when mariana came out to her parents at the age of 15, which is when she decided to begin her transition. while her mom attempted to be supportive, her father basically disowned her, and became even more verbally and emotionally abusive. between him and the cruel world of high school, she just couldn’t catch a break.
she began working from the young age of 14, working underground jobs and getting paid under the table to avoid the shitty child labor laws that always held her back. she also did small jobs like shoveling the neighbors drive way, cut the grass, walk dogs, etc. she had always been hard working. finally, when she was just 16 years old, she looked into getting emancipated and began the process. it wasn’t much of a fight, really. her father didn’t want her around, and her mother was too scared of him to fight for her. she craved to get a new start, to get away from the abuse and childhood trauma that she had faced...so right after everything went through with the court proceedings, she packed up a small suitcase and flew out to california to live with her grandmother. and of course, she was accepted with open arms; being loved and supported for who she truly was by the elderly woman.
as she got old, mari’s grandmother began growing more and more ill. she was diagnosed dementia and early alzheimer's before mariana’s arrival, but continued to work to help with the financial burden that came with mari’s transition (at least, she worked as much as she could). because of this mari never finished high school, instead working 70+ hours a week in order to support both herself and her grandmother and obtaining her GED at the age of 17. she completed her transition by the age of 19, which was the same age she unfortunately had to put her grandmother into a locked dementia facility due to how her disease had begin to progress. mariana officially became her health care proxy and her conservator...and this broke her heart. she makes it a point to visit her at least twice a week, and she makes sure that the woman gets the best care.
mariana decided to go back to school for political science and womens studies at the age of 20. but with having to pay for school, her grandmothers care and facility, and just her wanting to live a lavish lifestyle, she realized she needed quick money...and quite frankly, she was growing tired of working like a dog. so, she got into the escorting business. she was beautiful, confident, and had a wonderful personality - so it wasn’t really hard for her to thrive. once she realized that, she never even thought about looking back.
now she’s thriving at egu!! she’s living her truth and is looking to go into law after graduation.
PERSONALITY !
she gives off a lot of “it girl” vibes. beautiful, sophisticated, and charming. knows how to talk to others, and knows how to get what she wants, when she wants. her confidence is one of her strongest assets.
outgoing, knows how to carry out a conversation. secretly loves to have deep, intellectual. who’s gonna get drunk with her and talk about their deepest thoughts
can be a bitch :( while she gives off the “it girl” vibes, she can sometimes give off the mean girl vibes. she can be a bit harsh, and sometimes will get you where it hurts
despite the stressors in her life, mariana is pretty carefree. loves to party, travel...and overall just knows how to have a good time. she’s here for a good time, not a long time.
literally....she’s so sweet ???? and kind ????? literally embodies harry’s “treat people with kindness” persona, but only if it’s reciprocated. basically...she’s not going to be a bitch to you without reason
also she’s humble ???? while she can be a bit materialistic and obnoxious, she never forgot where she came from, and she uses her past to make her stronger. she does not want to end up like her mother, basically. she just comes off as cocky because she knows she’s that bitch
