My paternal grandmother's parents wanted her to never leave home and take care of them in their old age. She went to nursing school and got a job against their wishes. They didn't want her to marry, but she started dating my grandfather anyway (they met after he came back from a date with her younger sister). She got pregnant, told my grandfather he had three months to decide what to do or she was raising the baby alone. In the 1950s. They got married and immediately moved to Canada to get away from her family. She was a stay-at-home mom for most of her life and had eight children.
I didn't know until I was an adult how much of a bad-ass she was; she was "just" the grandma who taught me how to knit, made delicious cookies, and used to repair my favourite dolls.
#international women's day#he wasn't like dating her younger sister they just went on one date#and I guess he saw her ironing and decided he picked the wrong sister#when I was told the pregnancy part I was blown away#she was ready to be a single mom#personal#they lived in the Netherlands btw#they decided to move to Canada because Canada accepted them right away#the US and Australia had waiting periods

not to be an angry punk on my love and light blog but FUCK MAN i really can NOT take non-jewish (or jewish adjacent like me) liberals seriously anymore with everything going on. you can tell them that news outlets have admitted to favoring palestine and that people in israel are also being killed and yanno suffering from their country being at war, and bring up hundreds of thousands of examples of antisemitism ALL OVER THE WORLD and how (for us americans) we DONT want to leave despite the election because while it's uncertain safety here we at least have our community and wouldn't be STARTING OVER IN A NEW COUNTRY WHERE ANTISEMITIC VIOLENCE IS WORSE THAN WHERE I'M AT and they'll sit there, with their "i'm a good ally" listening face to all of that just to turn around and say
"well yea but what about gaza? there's no excuse for that"
like there's a fucking excuse for all that israel and jewish people everywhere have been going through these past few years
#hearing coworkers takes on I&P and the election has me wanting to rip my hair out and cry#i want to believe they just don't know or understand but im still so hurt#ive been told more times than i can count this week to move to canada or the netherlands cause im trans#AS IF THOSE ARE SAFE SPACES FOR NORTH AMERCAN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OR JEWS#i'm so tired#i have jewish music class and torah study and a meeting with my rabbi tomorrow which is MUCH needed#but still i'm fucking tired#jumblr#jewish conversion#tw antisemitism#jewish vents

every once in a while I lament how the austria hungary imploded before they could fully fedaralize as the united states of greater austria. not bc I love the hapsburgs but bc it would've been so fun to have two USAs
HFIDIDIRKRKRK god imagining what an austrian usa would look like is sending me into hysterics
#not completely unrealted but my friend is moving to the netherlands to a place she described as the alabama of the netherlands#which just lead to me imagining a hillbilly type character wearing wooden clogs in a tulip field#asks#anon#even tho the english r kind of the european americans if u think abt it

Had a little rage moment (privately in my car) after my second day of saddle fitting.
On the second day someone brought in a Tennessee Walking Horse. Me and my team were working on another horse so didn't get much from how that consult went.
Later I heard that the horse was lame as all hell, but that the owner claims that that's "just his gaitedness".
I didn't explode with everyone around me. I just calmly said that that's a severe lack of knowledge of gaitedness, never mind horses in general.
But once I was on the main road where I could step on the gas I screamed out loud, in my car, and hated the world just a little bit, and reminded myself that this is also part of trying to make the world a little better.
Maybe I'm lucky to have ridden quite a few Icelandic horses in my life that I can hear and feel the difference in the varying degrees of tölt a horse can show, and that I definitely know when a horse is lame or even just a little 'off'.
I'm just baffled that people can look at their horse, can have professionals look at their horse, can have a class of people with a collective shit-ton of experience look at your horse and then still, still claim that lameness is simply the gaitedness of the horse.
#I'm kind of grateful I had a wonderful dressage horse as a case study who came in going 'I like my saddle'#and went home with the revelation that the saddle she'd been riding with hindered her horse juuuust that last little bit#that!! that was so amazing!!!!#first we had a dressage horse who was seriously good at what he asked#and then we put on a different saddle with more space for his withers and back#and suddenly that horse did Dressage and had some serious Moves#and his rider went '!!!!'#sadly the saddle in question was already sold to someone else but with a list of brand and size and the number of one of our teachers#that rider went home with some new ideas on what her horse could achieve#that compared to the TWH...sigh#I should add that the TWH scene here in the netherlands is not as big as the icelandic one#it truly might be a lack of knowledge. But also just a serious unwillingness to LISTEN.#so yeah I had a loud rant at myself in the car because how. HOw.>>>>WWWWW

what’s a fun fact about you that people may not guess
i am not anyone's idea of athletic. however since my social circle is like 90% other honors student orchestra losers, i technically qualify as a jock given that i have six years of experience playing field hockey
#i was a goalie though. jysk. lest you think i was actually running around like a fit person or something#sasha answers#infinitelytheheartexpands#i wasn't bad at it actually. though my 12th grade season was squandered by my fucking coach who never let me in varsity games#my team was shit and my teammates hated me. i don't think i ever had an unqualified Great experience playing with them.#by some miracle though i came out of it all actually enjoying field hockey as a sport#both as a player and a spectator#and to this day it's the only sport i've willingly gone to see professional matches of#and will actively sit down and watch the olympic matches of#though they don't often get broadcast here because field hockey in the us is not taken seriously and our teams rarely make the olympics lol#so if i want to watch i'd have to stream it online at odd times. like a netherlands or australian match or something#though the upside of the sport being kind of small in this country outside of specific regions (like where i grew up)#means that going to see literally the us national team play on their home turf is great. the crowd is modest it's not cramped or too loud#lots of fun. too bad they moved their home base though and are no longer in driving distance for us to attend games. oh well#my sister was always way more into field hockey than me. she played in college as a recruited athlete...i just played in high school#mostly cause i had to. but i still somehow enjoy the sport anyway#which i can't really say of any other major team sport#not the ones i've tried to play anyway

#in the midst of another one of my “what do?” moments#where either i just go to tafe and get into library work and live a stupid little existence in sydney#or actually try and move to the netherlands and do a masters (risk as like?? i'll be doing something less employable and its more expensive#tried to talk to my mum about this and she was like “yea i settled for my career bc there was money and i didnt hate it” and i was like?#that sounds AWFUL#anyways sorry for venting on a geoguessr post
