Tips and best practices for optimizing your smart home
You’ve figured out the basics of setting up your smart home, now it’s time to raise your game. I’ve spent years installing, configuring, and tweaking dozens of smart home products in virtually every product category. Along the way I’ve figured out a lot of the secrets they don’t tell you in the manual or the FAQs, ranging from modest suggestions that can make your smart home configuration less complex, to essential decisions that can save you from having to start over from scratch a few years later.
Here’s my best advice on how to optimize your smart home tools, top tips and best practices.
1. Choose a master platform at the start These days, an Amazon or Google/Nest smart speaker or smart display can fill the role of a smart home hub (and some Amazon Echo devices are equipped with Zigbee radios).
There are three major smart home platforms on the market, and your smart home will probably have at least one of them installed: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Home Kit. The industry now revolves around these three systems, and virtually every significant smart home device that hits the market will support at least one of them, if not all three.
These platforms are different, of course. Alexa and Google Assistant are voice assistants/smart speakers first, but the addition of features that can control your smart devices has become a key selling point for each. Home Kit is a different animal, designed as more of a hub that streamlines setup and management. But since Home Kit interacts , it too offers voice assistant features provided you have your iPhone in hand or have an Apple Home Pod.
All three of these platforms will peacefully coexist, but you definitely don’t need both Alexa and Google Assistant in the same home, and managing both will become an ordeal as your smart home grows larger. It’s also completely fine to use Home Kit for setting up products and then using Alexa or Google Assistant for control. If you have a Home Kit hub device (either an AppleTV or a Home Pod), you’ll want to use it, as it really does simplify setup.
2. You don’t necessarily need a smart home hub In the early days of the smart home, two wireless standards, Zigbee and Z-Wave, were going to be the future. These low-power radios offer mesh networking features that are designed to make it easy to cover your whole home with smart devices without needing to worry about coverage gaps or congestion issues.
The main problem with Zigbee and Z-Wave devices is that they require a special hub that acts as a bridge to your Wi-Fi network, so you can interact with them using a smartphone, tablet, or your computer (while you’re home and when you’re away, via the internet). Samsung SmartThings is the only worthwhile DIY product in this category at present; its only credible competitor used to be Wink, a company that is now on its third owner and which has a questionable future at best. The Ring Alarm system has both Z-Wave radios onboard, but it’s much more focused on home security than home control.
As simple as Smart Things and Ring Alarm are, you’ll still face a learning curve to master them, and if your home-control aspirations are basic, you might find it easier to use devices (and the apps that control them) that connect directly to your Wi-Fi network and rely on one of the three platforms mentioned above for integration. It’s worth noting here than the 800-pound gorilla in the smart lighting world—Signify, with its Philips Hue product line now offers families of smart bulbs that rely on Bluetooth instead, so they don’t require the $50 Hue Bridge.
That said, however, you’re limited to controlling 10 Hue bulbs over Bluetooth. The Hue Bridge is required beyond that, and it’s also required if you set up Hue lighting fixtures, including its outdoor lighting line.
The bottom line on this point: Unless you want to build out a highly sophisticated smart home system, I recommend sticking with products that connect directly to your network via Wi-Fi, rendering a central hub unnecessary.
3. Range issues can create big problems
The downside of installing Wi-Fi only gear is that everything in the house will need to connect directly to your router. If your router isn’t centrally located and your house is spread out, this can create range issues, particularly in areas where interference is heavy: the kitchen, bathrooms, and anything outside.
Your best bet is to check your Wi-Fi coverage both inside and outside the house before you start installing gear. Make a map of dead zones and decide whether you can live with them. If not, you’ll want to consider relocating your router or moving up to a mesh Wi-Fi network with two or more nodes. You can read more about mesh Wi-Fi networks here.
Interference can also be a troubling problem that changes over time. If your next-door neighbor upgrades or moves his router, you may find that an area of the house with a once-solid signal has suddenly become erratic. You can tinker with the Wi-Fi channel settings in your router’s administration tool, but deploying a mesh network is a more sure-fire solution. Netgear even has an Orbi mesh node that can be installed outdoors to cover your backyard.
4. You don’t need smart gear everywhere
Many a smart home enthusiast has dreamed of wiring his entire home from top to bottom with smart products. A smart switch in every room and a smart outlet on every wall sounds like a high-tech dream; in reality, it can spiral into a nightmare.
The biggest problem is that while smart gear can be amazingly convenient, it also adds complexity to your environment because all of it must be carefully managed. Does installing 50 firmware updates sound like a great way to spend the weekend? Or troubleshooting that one switch that just won’t suddenly connect properly? Deploying smart speakers all over house, so you don’t need to yell for one to hear you, sounds like a great idea, too—that is, until the speakers have difficulty deciding exactly which one you’re talking to.
Devices such as Leviton’s Decora Smart Voice Dimmer with Amazon Alexa make it easy to put Amazon’s digital assistant in every room, which sounds like a great idea until they start fighting each other to answer your commands. In choosing where to install smart gear, think first about necessity. The hard-to-reach socket where you always plug in your Christmas tree is a perfect place for a smart outlet that can be set on a recurring schedule. The kitchen is a great option for voice control, so you don’t need to touch anything with dirty hands. My living room feature is lighted by three lamps which would normally have to be turned off and on individually; with smart bulbs and Alexa, it’s easy to power them on with a couple of spoken words. But does the overhead light in the master closet really need to have any of these features?
And finally, there’s the obvious issue: Smart gear isn’t cheap, and outfitting a large home with smart gear can quickly become exorbitantly expensive. Think about what happens when your gear becomes outdated (and out of warranty)?
The bottom line: While it’s a great idea to install everything you think you’re going to use at the start of your project, don’t overdo it. You can always add on to your system down the road. Install smart gear only where you legitimately know you will use it.
5. Consolidate vendors It might sound like common knowledge to suggest you try to stick with a single vendor when it comes to all your switches or light bulbs, but it’s easy to be wooed by a product that promises new features or better performance. Avoid taking the bait: Over time, bouncing from one vendor to the next will leave you managing multiple apps, and you’ll likely get confused about which one goes with which device.
Many smart outlets and switches don’t carry a visible brand logo, so it isn’t always as easy as just checking the hardware itself to see where you should go. (Making matters worse, many smart products use a management app with a name that that has no relation to the hardware’s name.) And while most HomeKit-capable apps can control other vendors’ Home Kit devices, you’ll still usually need the official app to get things set up initially and to perform regular maintenance.
The good news is that Tech Hive has plenty of buying guides in almost every smart home category to help take the guesswork out of figuring out which brands to build your home around, so you needn’t experiment to find the best products on the market.
6. Give your gear short, logical names By default, many smart products will give themselves a name during setup that consists of generic terms and random digits, none of which will be helpful to you in identifying them later. It’s best to give your gear a short but logical and easy-to-remember name when you first set it up.
Start by giving all the rooms in your house a name in the management app, even if they don’t have any gear in them. (You might install equipment there later.) “Bedroom” is not a good name unless you only have only one. You’ll want to use the most logical but unique names possible here: “Master bedroom,” “Zoe’s bedroom,” “Guest bedroom,” and so on.
Now, when you install a product, standardize names using both the room name and a description of the item—or what the item controls. For example: “Master bedroom overhead lights” for a wall switch or “Office desk lamp” for a smart plug connected to said lamp. In rooms where you have multiple products, you can use a longer descriptor, numerical ID (1, 2, 3…), or something similar. In my living room, the three lamp smart bulbs are named Living room lamp left, center, and right, so if one isn’t working in the app, it’s easy for me to figure out which is which.
Doing this work up front will save you time if and when you connect your gear to a voice assistant. Not only does having a standardized, logical naming system make it easy for you to remember what to say, changing the name of a product in its app generally means having to re-discover the product within your voice assistant app, which is a hassle.
7. Wiring never looks like it does in the pictures
Manuals and online guides always make in-wall wiring look like a standard, well-organized affair, but I can assure you that many an electrician has taken some significant liberties with the way that switches and outlets are wired in the average home. Don’t be surprised to find multiple black line/load wires when you expected to find just two, strange in-wall hardware that doesn’t look like the picture, and wiring that simply doesn’t make sense.
The neutral wire required by the vast majority of smart switches and outlets is typically white. So which of these two white wires is the neutral? Of course, you can always experiment as long as you’re patient. There’s little risk of damaging the product if you miswire it the first time. Just make sure you’re turning the power off at the circuit breaker before you touch anything.
As a last tip on wiring, note that neutral (typically white) wiring is essential for most of the smart switches on the market. If there is no neutral wire in the electrical box where you want to install a smart switch, you’ll need to seek out the handful smart switches and dimmers that don’t require a neutral wire, like these C by GE models or certain switches.
8. Expect problems to emerge without warning
You know how your computer suddenly starts crashing every day, or your printer abruptly vanishes from the network? The same kind of things happen to smart home gear, which, after all, are miniature computers of their own, all prone to the same types of issues. Expect the occasional product to abruptly disconnect from your network, vanish from the management app, or stop working altogether—even after months or years of otherwise trouble-free operation, without any discernable reason. In many cases, you’ll need to manually reset the product to get it to reconnect to the app. Sometimes the app will guide you through this process, otherwise a quick Google search can get you squared away.
9. Pay attention to battery life
Devices not attached directly to the grid rely on battery power to operate. Door/window and motion sensors, smart locks, smart doorbells, many cameras, smoke alarms, and more are all likely to require regular battery replacements or recharging, and while many devices claim to last for multiple months or even years, the reality is often shorter than that.
Take stock of the batteries each of these devices use—some are truly oddball cells that you won’t have in the junk drawer—and keep spares on hand for when they die. Devices that use a rechargeable battery like the Ring Doorbell are supposed to alert you via the app when the battery is running low, so you can recharge it before it goes totally dead, but my experience is that these alerts are rarely actually delivered (or end up being ignored).
If your Ring Video Doorbell’s battery is dead, you’ll never know if someone’s ringing the bell (which, in my case, usually means a “missed delivery” slip from FedEx). I check my Ring’s battery life in the app once a week (it’s under Device Health), and when it hits about 35 percent, I remove the cell and charge it back up (you can also buy spare Ring batteries and just swap a dying battery for a freshly charged one).
10. Dimmers can be particularly problematic
Electrical dimmers like the old-school wall-mounted dial type work by lowering the amount of electrical current being sent to the load device, which will, say, lower the brightness of an incandescent bulb or slow down a fan. Unfortunately, dimmers pose particular problems for many devices. Smart home devices are especially problematic when dimmers are attached, because they contain electronics and radios that simply won’t work if the power isn’t coming through at full strength. As such, it’s a bad idea to connect devices like smart light bulbs to circuits that are connected to a dimmer.
On a similar front, you’ll need to be especially observant if you replace an old toggle switch with a smart dimmer. As a shortcut, sometimes switches are wired with pass-through circuitry that is meant to pass along current to other devices (such as a nearby power outlet). If you swap out this switch with a dimmer, you might inadvertently connect the dimmer to those outlets, causing them to lose all or partial power, making for a complex troubleshooting session.

Ideally, you would want to record the results to have a side by side comparison. To visually see the difference, you will need to conduct multiple speed tests one with just your WiFi connection and the other with the WiFi booster. The first sign showing that the booster is working is experiencing better signal in the weak zone and dead zone areas.īut, if you are a person of numbers and prefer actual proof, speed tests are great tools that can be used to analyze WiFi signal improvements. How would I Know if the WiFi Booster is Working? Doing so will degrade the WiFi booster's range and power, which might cause unsatisfactory results. Rather than wirelessly connecting the devices to the booster, you would use ethernet or gigabit ethernet cables to wire the device to the booster.Īs long as you have a wireless signal in your home or business, WiFi boosters are guaranteed to improve the signal's range.įor optimal results, don’t hide the booster behind furniture, in a gap between your living room couch and the wall, or place it near appliances that can interfere with the signal. The setup process would be slightly different than the one discussed earlier. The majority of boosters have at least one ethernet port that can be used for printers, computers, smart TVs, and gaming consoles. WiFi boosters work with wireless and wired devices. Once connected to the booster, you will be able to enjoy a reliable internet connection in places that originally received poor signal strength.ĭo WiFi Boosters Only Work with Wireless Devices?

The password might be the same as your current network, or you might've created a different one during the set-up process. To do so, you would go into the WiFi settings on your wireless device, click on the WiFi booster's network name (SSID) and enter the password. The last step would be to connect your phone, laptop, tablet, and smart home devices, to the WiFi booster. Of course, different WiFi signal booster manufactures (Netgear, Tp-Link, Linksys, D-Link, Asus, Orbi, and Eero) might require additional steps.Īfter completing the setup process, the booster can start working its magic it will grab the existing WiFi signal and extend its coverage area. Simply press the button on both devices and the WiFi booster will connect to the router. Many utilize the WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button, which makes the installation process super-fast. Most WiFi boosters have pretty simple setup processes. Ideally, you should look for the area that doesn't have a strong WiFi connection and plug the booster into a wall outlet halfway between the target area and the router. You want to place it close enough to the access point to receive a signal, but far enough away to cover the problem areas. The location of the WiFi booster is extremely important. Usually, boosters are coupled with stronger antennas that help broadcast the signal further and cover larger areas. The WiFi booster grabs the signal being transmitted by the access point and amplifies it for better use. WiFi boosters wirelessly connect to an access point, such as a wireless router or hotspot. On the other hand, dual-band WiFi boosters use both GHz frequencies to transmit data one band solely communicates with the router, and the other band talks to the wireless devices. Single-band boosters only utilize one frequency band (2.4GHz or 5GHz) to transmit data.
Frequency Bands: There are two types of WiFi signal boosters – single-band and dual-band.
Depending on the WiFi booster model, on average they can increase the range by 300-2,000+ sq ft. Any device outside that range will experience connectivity issues.
Range: Most routers have a range of 150-300 feet.
Some simply plug-in to a power source and are great for improving the signal in one room, while others sit on a desk, table, or shelf and use stronger external antennas that are capable of improving the signal in multiple rooms.
Wall Plug or Desktop Design: There are two different types of booster styles available.
As a result, you will no longer have to deal with poor WiFi in your home or business.ĭifferent types of WiFi booster models are available they vary in design, range, amplification power, and frequency band usage. WiFi Boosters (also known as internet boosters) expand your WiFi system's coverage area by boosting or amplifying the wireless signal and broadcasting it into the desired areas.

Laptop and Laptop Stand Deals
Be sure to read our Best Laptops, Best Cheap Laptops, Best MacBooks, and Best Chromebooks guides for more of our recommendations. Our How to Buy a Laptop guide also offers lots of advice if you’re unsure on what processors and RAM to choose.
Samsung Galaxy Chromebook.
Photograph: Samsung
This is last year’s Razor Blade 15 (our favorite gaming laptop), but it’s still a plenty powerful portable gaming rig. The configuration on sale here pairs a 6-Core Intel i7 with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 graphics card.
Alienware’s M15 is one of the best gaming laptops you can buy. It’s sleek (for a gaming laptop), powerful, and has an eye-popping screen (with a 240-Hz refresh rate). The only catch is it’s expensive, but this deal takes some of the pain out of the price. We reviewed a similar version here.
It’s not the sleekest Chromebook around, but you get surprisingly decent performance with the 10th-gen Intel Core i3 processor inside. It has a 360-degree design, so you can flip the screen all the way around, which is handy for drawing or using the 13-inch touchscreen with Android apps.
Asus Chromebook Flip C434
Photograph: Asus
This is a match of the lowest price we’ve ever seen. The Flip C434 is our favorite Chromebook at the moment. The display is bright and sharp, the battery lasts more than a full work day, and the Core M3 chip is decent enough for standard-fare everyday tasks. (If you frequently have more than 25 tabs open, you may want to opt for something more powerful, like the Galaxy Chromebook below.)
Samsung’s original Galaxy Chromebook remains a powerful machine with a gorgeous screen. If you’re looking for a top-tier Chromebook this is one of the best we’ve used. The only problem is the battery life, which is pretty bad—you’ll rarely get more than 5.5 hours out of its battery. Also keep in mind that this has been selling for less than $800 for many months now (and it has dipped even lower before).
The 14-inch Acer Swift 3 is our favorite budget laptop. This model uses an Intel Core i7 chip, which means you can get a more powerful chip for less than the price of the configuration in our guide (which has an i5). It also has 8 gigabytes of RAM and a 256-gigabyte solid state drive (SSD), with a Full HD IPS LCD display (IPS is a little nicer than some types of LCD).
Moft Z Sit-Stand Desk
Photograph: Moft
Stop craning your neck and staring down at your laptop screen. Get a stand to elevate it! We like this one from Moft, which you can configure to five different positions. It can get up to 10-inches tall, so if you want to stand and work for a bit, the option is there. The best part is that this model is so lightweight and thin, you can take it anywhere.
No, I’m not sure I know what this company’s name means, but I really like this mini laptop desk for when I work in bed or on the couch. It offers up a large surface area that can fit bigger laptops, and you can tilt the main platform up, which is especially handy if you’re sketching on an iPad. There’s a tiny little drawer you can use to store cables or other tchotchkes. It’s hovered between $40 and $50 since the pandemic began.
The Lenovo Yoga 9I is 14-inch convertible ultrabook. This configuration features an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and a 256-gigabyte SSD. It also comes with a stylus, which packs away in a handy storage slot.
Flexispot Standing Desk
Photograph: Amazon
You’ll need to click the coupon to see the deal at checkout. I’ve tested and really like Flexispot’s EN1 standing desk, but this version goes a step further by adding USB charging ports (two USB A and one USB-C) and a drawer so you can clean up your desk clutter. There are four height memory buttons, so you can preset the perfect height for when you sit, stand, and configure it for others in the household. This one even has a child lock that prevents kids from operating the desk.
Click the on-page coupon to see the discount at checkout. I’ve been using a similar version of this desk for more than a year and it has served me exceptionally well. This one doesn’t have folding legs, but it’s spacious at 63 inches, and still takes minutes to set up. The desktop is particleboard and nothing special, but it feels solid.
This is one of the most popular standing desks around, and for good reason: it’s pretty much the best. (WIRED reviews director Jeffrey Van Camp uses it and agrees.) The bamboo top is exquisite and eco-friendly, and there are a myriad of ways to customize the desk to your liking. You get a 15-year warranty on all the desk frame components, as well as the mechanical parts, motors, and electrical components, which is rare.
We haven’t tested the monitors in this section, but we’ve cross-referenced reviews from around the web and tried to stick with reputable brands we are familiar with. Looking for more options? We have a few options we’ve tested and recommend in our Home Office Gear guide.
BenQ Curved Monitor
Photograph: BenQ
Sure, you’ve probably used a 24-inch monitor before, maybe even a 27-inch one. But what about a 32-inch monitor? There’s enough room to fit two browser tabs side by side. You also get a high resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) on this VA panel, support for AMD’s FreeSync if you plan on gaming and need a fast response, and the monitor itself supports a 144-Hz screen refresh rate. The array of ports on the back include HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, USB-A, plus a headphone jack, and it can be VESA mounted if you want to ditch the stand. It has dipped to this price before, but not frequently.
OK, hear me out. Sometimes you just don’t want to switch tabs. It’s 2021, people! This super ultrawide from Samsung has a screen so large and wide, it will probably hang off of your desk. But it can probably fit three full-size spreadsheets side by side. For some folks, that’s worth $900. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for this monitor. The VA panel has a 120-Hz screen refresh rate, it’s curved, gets incredibly bright, and has a whopping 5,120 x 1,440 pixel resolution. Just know that you may need a fairly powerful PC to run intensive apps and games on this behemoth of a screen.
Want a large screen that can reasonably fit on your desk without spending too much? This Lenovo monitor has positive reviews around the web, a 2,560 x 1,440-pixel resolution, and a 75-Hz refresh rate that works with AMD’s FreeSync platform. You get an HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity, plus a 3.5-mm headphone jack on the back. VESA mounting support means you can reclaim some space on your desk. This is the lowest price we’ve seen yet.
If all you need is a simple, external screen, then this 24-inch monitor should do the job. My partner has been using it for a year with no issues. It has VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports, along with a 1,080p resolution. It doesn’t have VESA mounting capabilities.
Vissles Portable Monitor
Photograph: Vissles
If you’re itching to go back to working out of a coffee shop but got used to the luxury of a monitor hooked up to your laptop, well, here’s the solution. We tested and really like this portable 1,080p touchscreen monitor (9/10, WIRED Recommends). It has dual USB-C ports as well as Mini HDMI, so it’s easy to connect it to an array of devices, and it’s slim enough to stow it in a backpack.
This is an elegant monitor mount if you want to ditch the stand to clear some space on your desk. I’ve been using it to hold up my 34-inch ultrawide for the past two years and it hasn’t failed once. We haven’t tested it, but Fully’s Jarvis monitor arm is also discounted for $89 ($20 off).
This HP monitor doesn’t have as high a screen resolution as the Lenovo above (it’s just 1,920 x 1,080 pixels), so you might see more pixels, but it has built-in speakers, can be VESA mounted, and has HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA ports.
We have plenty more picks in our Best Keyboards and Best Gaming Mouse guides.
Razer Huntsman Mini
Photograph: Razer
If you’re like me and want a compact mechanical keyboard to save on desk space, then try the Huntsman Mini, which is also in our keyboard guide. It has 60-percent of the keys normally found on a regular keyboard, so there’s no NumPad or even arrow keys. Nice, small, and simple.
This is as subtle as mechanical keyboards come. Yes, it has RGB lighting like almost all gaming keyboards these days, but you can turn it off if you prefer. WIRED reviewer Jess Grey says the keys are durable, quiet, and you get a full-size number pad.
Want no wires at all? This is the way. I’ve been using this Vissles mechanical keyboard for a few weeks and it is excellent. It’s clicky yet quiet, sits slightly sloped toward you, and has a wonderful layout (with arrow keys, too!). There’s RGB lighting, hot-swappable switches, and Bluetooth means you can pair it with five devices and switch between them quickly. Enter the code V84 at checkout to see the discount.
SteelSeries Apex Pro Keyboard
Photograph: Steelseries
We love this keyboard because you can customize the type of mechanical switches in each key for a truly personalized typing experience. There’s also a nice LED display for system alerts, volume, and other things you can configure with SteelSeries’ software. And, of course, RGB.
This reliable wired mouse is frequently on sale, but this is one of its lowest prices ever. It has customizable RGB lighting, quick response times, and two extra buttons on the left edge.
I used this mouse for more than two years with no problems whatsoever. It’s simple yet well built, with a reliable and speedy connection as well as no noticeable input lag. The single AA battery it requires usually lasted me three to four months before it needed replacing, and that was with my heavy use.
For an upgraded mouse experience, this used to be our top gaming pick. It was recently supplanted by the SteelSeries Prime Wireless, but still has industry-leading response times, optical switches, and wireless connectivity. Unlike many wireless mice, you don’t need batteries. It comes with a dock you can plop it on for wireless charging. Better yet, it’s ambidextrous, so it’s a great option for righties and lefties.
Headphone and Headset Deals
These are just a small selection of our favorite headphones and mics. For more, read our Best Wireless Headphones, Best Cheap Headphones, Best Podcasting Gear, and Best Wireless Earbuds guides.
Bose Noise Cancelling 700
Photograph: Bose
These usually dip to $278-$298 when they’re on sale, but this is the lowest price ever on our favorite wireless headphones. These Sony cans have long battery life, a comfy fit, and some of the best sound quality for the price. They also excel at noise canceling—important if you need to drown out the construction happening outside. (They’re also our favorite ANC headphones.) In this version, Sony also improved call quality, which makes them a solid choice for Zoom meetings.
Like the Sony pair above, this is the lowest price ever for these Bose headphones. They’re an especially excellent pair if you make a lot of phone calls—even if you’re in a noisy coffee shop or the kids are yelling in the next room, they’ll silence the world around you so the person on the other end will hear you clearly.
The Cloud Flight S is one of our favorite wireless gaming headsets, but it’s great for anyone that wants headphones with a built-in mic that comes up to your mouth. WIRED reviewer Jess Grey says you an excellent soundstage, 30 hours of battery life, and the microphone is detachable. It doesn’t look too obnoxious, unlike some gaming gear, and the comfy earcups mean you can wear ’em for a while.
Understated design is something we appreciate in a gaming headset, especially when it’s going to serve double duty as a pair of work and/or Zoom meeting headphones. SteelSeries has always been great at providing headsets that don’t look out of place in a home office. The Arctis 5 is one of our faves for PC gaming (the mic is quiet on PS4). It fits comfortably for long periods of time, has an excellent microphone that hides away inside one of the earcups when not in use, and produces rich, resonant sound.
If you want to spend less, the excellent corded SteelSeries Arctis 1 is $35 ($15 off), and it’s our favorite headset under $50.
1More ColorBuds
Photograph: Joseph Shin
These are our favorite earbuds (8/10, WIRED Recommends) for most people. That’s because they’re affordable (especially on sale), offer up a comfy fit, are sweat-resistant so you can use it for your home workouts, and they manage to sound pretty great for the price. They hold six hours of battery life, but you can pop ’em in the case, which holds another 16 hours.
These earbuds have gone on sale at this price two other times since April, but they made our list of best workout earbuds, so we’re including them. If you want a single pair to transition from your Zoom meeting to the gym, this is it. Jabra improved the microphones so call quality is great, and they sound good, too. They have a two-year warranty, a comfortable fit, and have physical buttons so your sweaty hair won’t switch tracks automatically mid-run. Read more in our review.
Charging, Cables, and Hub Deals
Satechi USB-C Multi-Port Hub
Photograph: Satechi
Plug this USB-C hub into your laptop and you can now connect an array of accessories. There’s an Ethernet port for faster internet, HDMI to hook your laptop up to a monitor, and even a MicroSD and SD card reader if you need to transfer photos or other documents. We’ve tested similar hubs from Satechi and they’ve worked well. This is a match of the lowest price this hub has dropped to. Belkin has a similar hub (with similar ports) also on sale for $50 ($50 off).
I tested and like this dock, which lets you plug in and charge multiple gadgets through one system. That means saving up on the number of outlets you need. It’s not going to charge your iPads or bigger devices as quickly as usual, but it’s still really convenient. The front area is also a wireless charging pad for your wireless earbuds case. Satechi is offering 33 percent off other work-from-home tech gear if you want to take a look.
This hub from Anker is made for MacBooks. It’ll take up two USB-C ports on your Apple laptop, but in return, you get access to nine other ports. This includes two USB-A and two USB-C ports, an HDMI, Ethernet, MicroSD and SD slots, plus a 3.5-mm headphone port. It can passthrough power to recharge a MacBook Pro.
Razer Charging Pad
Photograph: Razer
This is the lowest price we’ve seen on this wireless charger, which is in our guide to the Best Wireless Chargers. It’s a well-designed pad you can pop your Android phone or iPhone on, but what makes it special is the RGB lighting underneath. You can plug the USB-C port into your PC and download Razer’s Chroma software to activate unique lighting effects, too.
Charging adapters are getting smaller and smaller while outputting more power than before. This dual-port Anker charger should be sufficient enough to recharge an iPad Pro and even a MacBook (maybe not a MacBook Pro under heavy load). It comes with travel adapters, which is nice.
Webcams, Tablets, and More
Read our Best Tablet, Best iPad, and Best Webcam guides for other options.
iPad Air
Photograph: Apple
Apple updated the iPad Air in 2020 to make more powerful than the standard iPad, but not quite as luxurious as the iPad Pro (learn more in our iPad guide). It can even use the second version of the Apple Pencil, meaning the stylus stores and charges magnetically. It’s powerful so you can crank out some work on it thanks to iPadOS, which is getting more robust with every update. You also still get some old-school features like Touch ID (it’s integrated into the side power button).
I tested and like Lenovo’s slightly newer M10 HD, but this tablet should work similarly well. It’s not very powerful, so don’t expect snappy performance, but it’s one of the few good cheap Android tablets out there. Unlike Fire tablets, which also run on Android, you can access all the apps in Google’s Play Store, just like any Android phone. This one’s handy to have around the house, whether it’s for following cooking recipes or joining a Zoom meeting in another room.
Webcams were hard to find last year, but they’re finally in stock (and at reasonable prices). This one from Logitech will give you 1,080p quality and has a privacy shutter so you can block the camera when you’re not using it.
You probably are running out of outlets in your home. We haven’t tested this power strip from Anker, but you get six outlets, two USB-A ports, and a USB-C port. That’s pretty much all most people need to plug in at a desk, if not more. The USB-C port is rated for 30-watts, which means it can charge an iPad Pro just fine.
Dealing with large files? If you need to move them around from the office to your home and don’t want to deal with long upload times, this portable SSD is your solution. It can store up to 2 terabytes and includes a USB-C-to-USB-A or USB-C-to-USB-C cable so you can plug it into your devices. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen it.
This isn’t a huge discount, nor is it the lowest price we’ve ever seen (it dipped to $59 in 2019), but webcam prices have been inflated due to demand during the pandemic. We’re finally starting to see things go back to normal, and this is still a good price for the best webcam we’ve tested. It even has a built-in ring light!
The best part about the iPad Mini is the 8-inch screen, which is perfect for browsing in bed after a long day at the desk (or for travel). The Mini supports the first-gen Apple Pencil, which makes it great for jotting down notes during Zoom meetings or doodling in the cafe as you procrastinate. Not sure which iPad is right for you? See our guide to choosing the perfect iPad. Amazon may also end up matching this deal from Walmart’s rival “Deals for Days” sale.
Router, Security, and Home Deals
Nest Wifi
Photograph: Google
Working remotely means you need good Wi-Fi. WIRED reviews director Jeffrey Van Camp uses and loves the standard Eero mesh Wi-Fi router in his home. This deal is on the Pro version, and this is a match of the lowest price it’s ever been. Amazon, which owns the Eero brand, says the Pro is more than twice as powerful as the standard model. There are two Ethernet ports (one for the router and the other for hardwiring it to another device like a PC). This 3-pack lets you place the routers around your home to create a mesh system for robust coverage everywhere. If you already own several Wi-Fi 6-enabled gadgets (lucky you), the Eero 6 is also on sale for $181 ($98 off), also the lowest price ever. (You can read our Wi-Fi 6 explainer here).
If you want a more aesthetically pleasing router, we like Google’s Nest Wifi—even though it spells Wi-Fi wrong. This deal is on the two-pack, which includes two full Nest Wi-Fi routers (not the mesh extender), and it’s the lowest price we’ve ever seen. It’s dead simple to set up, has great guest network features, and is rated to cover up to 4,400 square feet.
For a more traditional (mesh-less) router experience, this is the one to get. It supports Wi-Fi 6, so you can connect more devices than ever and still maintain a good connection to all of them, and you get five gigabit Ethernet ports built-in to hook it up to your primary devices.
Working from home means you don’t necessarily get the same security protections your office used to provide. This security key lets you keep your accounts secure with two-factor authentication. Pop it into the USB-A port of your laptop and PC to authorize access, or tap the NFC end to your phone. Just know if you use the LastPass password manager, you’ll need to upgrade to a YubiKey 5. If you’re unsure how it works, we have a guide.
If you’ve upgraded your home office with more and better equipment, you’ll want to make sure you keep it protected. Wi-Fi-enabled security cameras have their own host of privacy concerns, but if you follow the best practices we mention in our Best Security Cameras guide, they should give you some peace of mind. We like this one from TP-Link’s Kasa brand. As the name suggests, it can pan and tilt and you can control it via the app. You get 1,080p video quality, motion detection, and it works with Google Assistant and Alexa, so you can view the feed on select smart displays. It’s not the biggest discount, but this is a match of the lowest price it’s ever been.
Roborock S6 MaxV
Photograph: Roborock
Working from home can mean juggling a lot of tasks. One of those doesn’t have to be vacuuming the house. Get a robot to do it for you instead during your lunch break! This is the lowest price ever for this robot vacuum. It’s in our Best Robot Vacuums guide, and you can read more about it in our review, but if you have a pet, it’s a no-brainer. It has powerful suction and has cameras that can identify and avoid obstacles (even pet poop).
We are coffee snobs here at WIRED. We have guides on the Best Latte and Cappucino Machines, cold-brew coffee makers, coffee subscription services, coffee grinders, portable coffee makers, rugged French Presses for the outdoors, portable espresso makers. But maybe you just want your daily caffeine fix without any effort and miss the ease of pushing a button on the office Keurig. If that’s you, this model should satisfy. You’ll need to supply your own K-Cup pods, which are now recyclable—for what that’s worth.
WIRED writer Arielle Pardes likes this under-desk treadmill. It helped her log 8 miles walking on it on her very first try, all while emailing, responding to Slacks, and writing. If you’re using a standing desk and want to feel more active, this is a great solution. This is almost a match of the lowest price we’ve seen for it (but that was before the pandemic).
Coway Airmega 200M (about 2 feet tall)
Photograph: Coway
Since you’re spending so much more time at home, you may as well keep the air clean. This is our favorite air purifier for small rooms. It’s small, so it will fit pretty much anywhere, and it is rated for spaces up to 361 square feet. There’s an included air quality monitor that will turn the machine off when it doesn’t detect pollution.

Apple Remote Desktop however only works within the same Network, and not over the internet. It is less than accurate yes. However for ARD to work over the internet several settings need to be applied on the remote router so ARD requests are forwarded to the correct machine, which may or may not be possible. Control your iPod, iPhone or Mac with this Apple remote. On your iPod or iPhone, the Apple remote lets you connect your device to speakers and then control the sound and select different tracks. When you use this Apple remote with your Mac, easily skip through DVDs and shuffle songs from a distance.
Remote access to Mac, anywhere
Jun 06, 2016 With TeamViewer installed on a Mac and the TeamViewer: Remote Control app downloaded, you can remote-control the Mac from an iPad. (TeamViewer is a free app if you're using it in a non-commercial. iTunes Remote is the best way to control Apple Music, iTunes, or the Apple TV app from anywhere in your home. Simply download the app to your iPhone or iPad, and connect directly to Apple Music, iTunes, or the Apple TV app on your Mac or PC. With iTunes Remote you can:. Access your Apple Music, A.
Get Screens and work across multiple remote Macs.
While many countries are on a lockdown due to COVID-19, remote work is becoming a lifestyle. Remotely accessing a Mac is designed to be easy. Apple has spent a lot of time ensuring anyone can log in to their Macs — both desktop and laptop — from any other Mac device, anywhere. And, besides, there are a variety of third-party apps ready to help with that too.
Still, remotely managing their Mac sounds overly complicated to a lot of people. From how you connect to sharing files or screens to using your Apple device as a remote mouse, we want to demystify the process in the easy-to-follow guide below.
Best Remote Access Apps for Mac
There are times when you want to access your Mac remotely, and there are many different solutions to remote access your Mac. Best utilities in one pack, give it a go!
How to access your Mac from another location
There're two ways: you can allow remote login to your Mac from another computer, or allow others to access your computer using Remote Desktop (it's available from the App Store).
Allow remote login to your Mac from another computer
For devices using the same macOS, you can allow remote Mac login using a Secure Shell (SSH). This enables Mac remote desktop access using a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).
To set up Remote Login:
Go to System Preferences > Sharing
Select Remote Login.
Choose which users you want to have remote access or the ability to control your Mac.
You can either select All Users, which means any other device on your network, or any Mac you own, can access and connect, or click the plus sign to pick the exact users.
When you want to remotely log in to your Mac from another device, you need to know your username (the name that appears when you login) and your computer's IP address. Write them down and keep them safe, as allowing access to your Mac does make it potentially less secure, especially over cellular or public Wi-Fi networks.
Accessing, controlling, or viewing information on your Mac can be done with a built-in Terminal or any other SSH app using your username and IP address.
Allow others to access your computer using Apple Remote Desktop
With macOS remote Mac access and control is even easier. To set up it:
Go to Menu > System Preferences > Sharing
Select Remote Management - it should appear as a checkbox.
Now you can select who has remote desktop access. Either select, All Users, which means any other device on your network, or Mac you own, can access and connect, or click the Add button(+), which gives you the ability to select who can have remote access and/or control.
If you are using a VPN or VNC viewer and want to access your Mac remotely, you will need to setup a password first. It is also possible to use iOS devices, such as an iPhone and iPad, through Apple Remote Desktop, available from the App Store.
How to stay on the same page with Screens
Collaboration has become of utmost importance to today's workplaces. And with more and more people working remotely, being on the same screen (ahem, page) is a must.
Screens allows you to work remotely with any computer regardless of your location. Whether you are on a business trip or traveling, stay confident knowing you can access any file on your home computer at any time.
This robust screen sharing tool for Mac supports:
Multiple displays
Drag-and-drop file sharing
Hiding your remote screen while accessing it
Accessing other computers (e.g. colleague's) as a guest
Alternative shortcuts (useful when connecting Mac to PC)
Custom actions in case of disconnection
To start using Screens, get the app from Setapp and configure the following:
Remote login and remote management (as per the guide above)
Install Screens Connect helper app and create a Screens ID on every machine you'd like to connect to in the future
Use your Screens ID in the Screens app and it will automatically determine which of your computers are available for connection
Remote desktop client for Mac
Control any computer remotely – a perfect way to access your Mac from anywhere without limitations.
Share files between devices
Today we have plenty of ways to send and share files. But ask someone to send something, and you are likely to get it through email. Due to the ubiquitousness of email, it's still the default method for file sharing, despite its obvious flaws and constraints.
Fortunately, there are much better ways:
Scan for a mac address on the network. The place I work at has a kind of messy network in that we have Netgear GS105 managed switches providing ports for groups of desks as the building has migrated from a chicken egg place (in the past) into cold stores into offices, so there aren't enough wall ports available.Actually since starting to write this I've had a conversation and those switches are on a different subnet to the main network (layer 3?) - I'm not very experienced with all this can you tell?I'm quite confused now and might have to do some extra reading. It provides mine and a collegues connectivity.
Native macOS File Sharing
Few people know that their Mac has native file sharing functionality built in. To use this feature, activate it in the Sharing pane of System Preferences by checking File Sharing. If you only want to share specific folders, add them to the Shared Folders list. If you only want specific users to access the folder, add them to its Users list. Otherwise, everyone will be able to access it.
AirDrop
Although not the most reliable solution, AirDrop works fine for occasional sharing a file between Apple devices. In the Finder, choose Go and then AirDrop on both the sending and receiving Mac. As soon as you see the receiver's user icon, drag the desired file onto it to send.
Ipad Remote Control For Mac Download
Read more about how to use AirDrop
Dropshare
If you don't want to send files Mac-to-Mac directly but rather through a cloud storage, there is no easier way than Dropshare. The app works with numerous cloud providers, from Dropbox to Google Drive, and saves your files for sharing by simply dragging them onto its menu bar icon.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
The most technical but also the most robust way to share files from your mac is to use FTP, which you could do either through Terminal or an FTP Client, the latter being much more user friendly.
There are a few popular FTP clients one could choose from. The robust file managing app ForkLift covers most of the FTP functionality but takes it to the next level and could be a viable replacement for the Finder altogether with its quick search, instant previews, and file comparison.
DCommander is another full-featured file transfer app for Mac that combines speed and reliability, able to handle thousands of files, schedule backups, and even automate transfers.
At last, when it comes to sharing the same files on different devices, an app like ChronoSync Express becomes invaluable.
ChronoSync Express is powerful tool for sharing and transferring files from Mac to Mac, or any another Apple device. With a feature called Synchronizer Document, you can select which files need to be automatically synchronized and shared between devices, just like that:
Create a new synchronizer document for each folder synchronization you'd like to perform
Name the synchronization
Change the Operation to Synchronize Bidirectional
Select folders to sync on the left and right
Test with a Trial Sync
Do you need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)?
Whether you are working on your Mac directly, logging into your Mac remotely, or sharing access with someone else, security should be on top of your mind.
As a rule of thumb, you should always use a VPN when connected to a public Wi-Fi network, as someone could log in and see the information you send just as easily as you do.
And with remote access — even in the View Only mode — someone can see every file and document on your Mac, except those that are password protected. Unfortunately, if you leave passwords in a visible document, you expose yourself to immense risks.
A secure VPN client for Mac like Shimo is well worth using to stop unwanted eyes from lurking around, especially if you are sharing sensitive files, financial records or customer data.
However, for extra peace of mind and security, consider firing up your VPN automatically on all networks you are not 100% sure about to keep your emails, bank accounts and personal documents safe.
To share your Mac with someone else, download a remote Virtual Network Computing (VNC) app like Jump Desktop. With full remote access and Mac remote control, the other person — or yourself connecting to another Mac — can have the same level of control as the person using that device. Except for Admin level access, since it's password protected.
Starting with Jump Desktop is easy: either yourself (gaining access) or the person you are giving a remote view or control access to your Mac, needs to add details of the device and the password.
Secure your access with VPN
Get a VPN client for Mac to avoid privacy infringement while connecting remotely. It's secure and free to try.
Free office 2010 download full version. Office is activated and ready to use. Tip: If you see an error that says the Microsoft Office installer.pkg can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, wait 10 seconds and move the downloaded file to your desktop.
Once permission is granted at the other end, remote Mac screen sharing or control (whereby you can use the iOS device as a remote mouse) becomes possible.
How to use your iOS device as a remote mouse
If your remote work starts on a patio hammock somewhere in east Asia, you should note that Apple iOS devices, such as an iPhone or iPad, can be used to control a Mac remotely, much like a mouse can control a desktop or laptop. Apps that make this possible work on VNC.

Remote Mouse is the easiest, most effective way to turn your iOS device into a wireless remote control for your Mac.
Although remote access through a local network would be most effective, since the closer you are to the device the quicker the connection, it's also possible from anywhere in the world, providing the network is secure and fast enough.
Ipad Remote Control Macbook
Setting up and granting access to the iOS device is the same process as when someone wants to access using a Mac. Except you need to give them a password. And make sure it is different from your primary Mac or iOS (App Store) one.
So working together or checking on your devices can be done from anywhere in the world and there are lots of ways to do that, from sharing screens and files to having complete access to a system set up far away. How can I extend my Wi-Fi range without losing speed? How do I extend my Wi-Fi signal at home?
There is no need to expend much money for extending your Wi-fi range, go through the tips which boost your wi-fi range for free:
Move your router to another place
Simply, find an open area and place your to that location don’t place your router closet or a desk drawer or in the closed room. Place that in the dining hall study room or any spacious place then the router will continuously provide the internet without any interruptions.
2. Analyze your Wi-Fi network and neighbours network
If you are having a Wi-Fi analyzer like Netspot, you can easily survey your network and your neighbour's network. If both of them are using the same model network then maybe their network overlaps your network. In that case, you have to buy another band network to get a speed Wi-fi network. Because it’s a technical fact that when you are installing the wireless networks and your neighbour network signals are the same then it can cause issues.
3. Update your Firmware Software
It’s strongly recommended that you should have to use the updated software. Now, these days manufacturers build auto-update features in their router models. Whenever your firmware software goes out-of-date then it automatically gets updated which helps a lot to maintain your Wi-Fi range
you can go through the following steps:
Open your system, now open the existing browser
browse routerlogin.net link in your browser and fill the login credential
you will get redirected to the admin panel of the Netgear router
Go to Wireless setting> Update your firmware
4. Switch your router Frequency
Dual-frequency routers offer two bandwidths 2.4ghz and 5ghz bandwidth respectively. By following the above-mentioned steps, you will get logged in to your router login page, there you can easily change the network band-width setting from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz and increase your Wi-fi range capability
You can extend your Wi-Fi range by installing other equipment with your router, Let’s see those tools which help you out to extend your Wi-Fi range:
1. Install Another router
You can use the other router as an extender which helps to reach the dead zonal coverage area. You can connect them through wired mode but if you want to use wi-fi in the wide-area then you have to install it in wireless mode.
2. Wi-Fi Extender
Same as the router, you can extend the existing wi-fi through an extender you can place your extender near the location of your router once the setup gets established you have placed it in equal distance from the router and dead zone area. You can connect your extender through WPS or without WPS for to get acknowledge about how to setup Extender with a Wi-Fi router you can visit the domain: www.routerlogin.net .
3. Mesh Network
Mesh network can provide 1000 sq. ft. coverage area network. Mesh Network gets installed in the Large Wireless Network (LAN area network) where you don’t need to install your wi-fi network for a particular floor or room. It can easily get installed in a multi-floored or single-floor building.

Mac Mini For Photoshop
The entry-level Mac mini offers a 3.6GHz quad-core i3 processor for £799/$799 which may not fulfil the needs of the typical designer, but the £1,099/$1,099 version offers a 3.0GHz 6-core i5. Apple FINALLY updated their Mac Mini product line late in 2018 (with a minor update in March 2020), making it a pretty good option for photographers to run Lightroom and Photoshop. This buying guide provides insight into which model and what configuration options photographers should consider. The best budget Mac for photo editing is the 2019 Mac Mini for about $900 and the best budget PC is the Dell Inspiron 3670 for about $650. Add the ViewSonic VA2719-2K-SMHD 27 Inch display for about $220 and a 4TB hard drive for another $100. So you are a photographer on a tight budget in need of a computer to run Lightroom and Photoshop. Hi John - The PA272W-BK-SV 27' 16:9 IPS Monitor with SpectraViewII from NEC comes equipped with the NEC SpectraViewII color calibration tool and features enhanced color accuracy covering 99.3% of the Adobe RGB color space, 94.8% of the NTSC color space, and 146.4% of the sRGB color space. With a variety of input connectors including DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI-D Dual-Link, you.

What is Final Cut Pro X like running on a new Mac mini? We take a look at the new model, its features and how well FCPX performs. It even beats an iMac Pro in one of our tests!
Before we plug the new Mac mini up, it is important to understand that this version of the unit has changed. Changed a lot.
Back in 2005, the Mac mini was designed for switchers from PCs. It didn’t come with a screen, keyboard or mouse and keeping the price down helped make the transition to Mac OS 10.3 Panther and a PowerPC processor as painless as possible.
Times and technology have changed, no need now for the DVD slot or a spinning hard disk for storage.
The switchers of today are buying MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros as their first Macs, not the mini.
So this gives Apple a chance to change and retarget the use of the Mac mini. Consequently, that’s exactly what they have done with the new range of models.
But instead of offering (To quote Steve Jobs) a ‘stripped down Mac’ they’ve actually put the logic board on steroids!
The fourth generation Mac mini now has a choice of quad and 6-core processors, up to 64GB of Ram, up to 2TB of SSD storage and the option of a 10GigE port over the standard GigE.
There are also four USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports fed from two controllers, an HDMI port that supports 4K and two USB 3 ports. So yes, you can plug your own keyboard and mouse in without having to buy any adaptors.
Can the user upgrade the RAM in the new machine? Yes, it is possible, but it is not a case of flipping up a slot and exchanging the cards out.
You have to remove the cooling fan and then slide out the logic board. Make a mess of it and you’ll invalidate the warranty, so it is best to stick to an Apple approved centre for the upgrade. Should you want to get your spudger out and see the insides of the new Mac mini, head over to the excellent iFixit site.
The machine on test is a 3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7, 32GB 2666MHz DDR4, Intel UHD Graphics 630, 1TB SSD storage and the 10 Gigabit Ethernet option.
If the colour of the Mac mini looks familiar, it is exactly the same as the iMac Pro and (after seeing them side by side) the Blackmagic external GPU. This also makes sense of the decision for Apple to sell the black keyboard and mouse and also probably hints at the new Mac Pro colour. (And possible footprint- a skyscraper sized oblong trashcan?)
Connecting it up
I’m lucky to have 2 10GigE connections on the back of my QNAP NAS. Final Cut Pro X needs fast drives to be able to build the ‘always live’ waveforms and thumbnails.
Plumbing the Mac mini into the edit system is easy and I’ve detailed how to do point to point 10Gig connection before if you haven't got a router/switch.
If you need the internet on the machine, a cheap USB to Ethernet adaptor from Amazon for $15 works as well as anything else. Run a speed test to make sure you are accessing the NAS via the higher speed route.
I powered a 4K monitor from the HDMI port; this works well and avoids any more dongles having to be bought.
After 25 years of Mac ownership, I have enough keyboards and a spare mouse to finish off the system!
Power On
The machine comes with Mojave installed and defaults to dark mode on the now silent boot. The machine is very quiet and can’t be heard over the fan of the nearby QNAP, which isn’t that loud either. This machine could easily sit on your desktop and not annoy you or your co-worker.
I read a recent review that the sound was pretty terrible out of the Mac mini. I’d disagree. It isn’t great, but it isn’t bad either. I’d say it was better than the old cylinder Mac Pro, but not in the league of the Mac notebooks. You wouldn’t want to use it as edit monitoring.
The Mac mini does have a headphone socket and I can see many editors sitting in offices with the machine on the desk and headphones on editing all day.
Although I worked the machine hard with rendering, the shell didn't get too hot. However I did feel the warm rush of air out of the back of the machine which caught me by surprise when the mini was angled away from me.
I wouldn't have it in this orientation for continuous use, ie situated under a central monitor post with cables pointing at you. Instead I suggest putting the cables and heat exhaust to the back. It will make plugging the headphones in a bit trickier, but I hate sitting in draught!
Final Cut Pro X Performance!
Let’s give it a real test and put it up against an iMac Pro!
I thought I’d dive straight in with a 4K Project and use a Library with a short minute and a half sequence with large still images, transitions, multiple title and adjustment layers.
It is in a Library that I duplicated to both machines with the media staying on the QNAP. The cache was set to both desktops respectively as the RAM in both runs at up to 3Gig speed.
Mac Mini For Photoshop Cs6
Although I didn’t time it, it felt like the thumbnails were taking a longer time to draw than I’m used to on the iMac Pro. All render files were deleted before all tests.
Unrendered, the Mac mini played the sequence back in Better Performance, but dropped frames on Better Quality. The iMac Pro played back in both settings without a problem.
Skimming seemed just as fast as the iMac Pro and it didn’t feel underpowered when navigating the timeline or browser.
The iMac is an 8 core machine with 64GB of RAM and more importantly a Radeon Pro Vega 64 GPU.
Both machines are connected to the same storage via 10GigE and renders and exports went to the respective desktops. (Ok I know it is NBase-T which supports 1Gb, 2.5Gb, 5Gb and 10Gb)
Render time Mac mini 7’03” iMac Pro 1’43”
Mac Mini For Photoshop Software
4K ProRes 422 Export Mac mini 6’45 iMac Pro 1’40”
As expected here as FCPX uses the GPU for image processing, the much lower powered Mac mini takes a lot longer.
Compressor Convert to HEVC 4K 8Bit Mac mini 54” iMac Pro 55”
Well, the Mac mini beat the iMac Pro! This is because all of the conversion is done on the CPUs.
Not really worth testing for Motion as apart from a few things like particles, Motion almost lives on the GPU.
Compressor Clusters
No, not a new breakfast cereal, but Compressor allows you to share the work out over connected machines.
I didn’t realise that the ability to set up a cluster of machines running Compressor was easy to do. Well, when I say easy my first attempt failed, but that might be down to my slightly quirky network topology with the QNAP.
To build a cluster, on the machines you want to add, open up a copy of Compressor. In the preferences, turn the option on for other computers to process batches.
Then on the host machine, make a cluster from the available machines in the list. Here you can see we have got something very wrong! We will be revisiting this topic with the issue fixed when we have more time.
Then having named your cluster (or other single machine), you can then toggle the processing destination in the dropdown menu on the bottom of the host machine's Compressor GUI.
To work properly and fast, all the machines need to be connected with 10GigE via a 10GigE switch. The costs of this networking is now a lot cheaper, Netgear and QNAP make a suitable budget switch.
There is no limit to the amount of Mac minis you can have in a cluster. You'll probably run out of switch ports first!
One note here. For distributed processing, it has to be a self contained movie that gets automatically diced and sliced and sent off to the cluster machines.
Conclusions
Not what I expected. I guess I was in the state of mind thinking that the Mac mini wasn’t a serious machine for anything other than web browsing, Plex serving or basic Photoshop.
It’s a lot more than than. It is a component in building a modular system, which is a new thought considering that Apple has been criticised over the past few years for lack of upgradability in the Mac Pro and iMac Pro.
There are two reasons for this new direction. The first are Thunderbolt 3 connections giving the option of using an external GPU and therefore factoring out the limited onboard Intel offering.
The second is the option of a 10GigE port. Being able to connect to high speed shared storage without going through an adaptor is a huge plus.
Why? Take sever centres for example. Every App on the iOS App Store has been compiled on a Mac. Rack up rows of Mac minis connected with 10GigE and you have a facility that can get apps ready quickly. No need for costly large GPUs here, all the work will be done by the CPU cores. Once set up, the Mac mini is more than happy to run in a headless mode. I've worked with a few producers like that.
This is also true of building a small Mac mini cluster to do the hard work of making all the different deliverables of an FCPX exported finished movie - while you carry on editing something else with your main machine. It would make sense for a large production or facility house to have a rack of these that everybody could access when needed.
Put five or ten of these together in a rack and you have a very fast DIT tool for making proxies and dailies on set. The Mac mini above gets its first on set DIT experience tomorrow!
I’ll leave you with a final thought.
Spec up a 6-core Mac mini with 32GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage and the soon to ship Blackmagic RX Vega 56 eGPU and you have a machine that’s not too far from the base model iMac Pro, wait for it... with over £1,200 left spare.
Granted, you’ll have to supply your own monitor, keyboard and mouse, but if upgradability is important to you, this could be a very clever way of getting the power with the flexibility.
Hopefully we will have an eGPU to test soon :)

LETS STOP AND DISCUSS CURRENT DAY MODEMS
You might be able to achieve faster internet speeds and avoid wasting cash every month along the way if you buy your very own cable modem, rather of renting one out of your Isp (ISP). ISPs and cable the likes of Cable One, Comcast Xfinity, Cox, Optimum, Spectrum (formerly Time Warner), Suddenlink, and WOW are attempting to make an income. Many of them charge a regular monthly modem-rental fee around $10 every month. Therefore we researched 10 different modems to get the best ones which will basically purchase themselves over time. All of them is less costly compared to annual rental charges you’d accrue out of your Isp. Despite the fact that we've selected cable modems which are suitable for all major Isps, book together with your local carriers before purchasing. In situation you’re not aware, a modem is really a small box which brings the web to your house. It’s diverse from a router, which rather brings the web to any or all your devices (wirelessly for most of us). As lengthy as you’re this is not on a DSL or fiber internet plan, you may need a router and modem to connect with the web. However, there are router/modem combos available on the market, we don’t recommend buying them (nor does CNET) because they’re hard to fix if something goes awry. However if you simply absolutely insist upon purchasing a combo unit, the Motorola MT7711 is the best choice. So, shop our top modem picks below, reduce your cost, and get individuals faster speeds you deserve!

This option, which also was named a top pick by the Wirecutter, BestReviews, and Top Ten Reviews. is backed by a robust 2-year warranty. This method is among the first modems to aid the brand new Data Over Cable Service Interface Specs (DOCSIS 3.1), which assists faster speeds (around 10 Gbps) and increases the quantity of data that may be sent over your network. We wouldn't recommend splurging with this modem unless of course you realize your Isp supports Gigabit speeds. DOCSIS 3. modems (almost every other one on the guide) are plenty quick enough for many users, and all sorts of ISPs presently support that spec.
4.

The best Wi-Fi do you need when you're at home? Range Extender can help
https://www.newsunlimit.com/the-best-wi-fi/
The best Wi-Fi do you need when you're at home? Range Extender can help
The best Wi-Fi do you need when you’re at home? Range Extender can help
The best Wi-Fi: In case your router is not sending a powerful sign as far into your property as you need, then a variety of extenders could be precisely what you want. Set one up and set up a wi-fi connection along with your router, and it will use its antennas to amplify the sign to aid you to join.
Between low-cost, plug-in extenders, fancy triband extenders with help for the quickest Wi-Fi 6 speeds, and devoted mesh routers that include their very own vary extenders, you’ve got obtained loads of choices as you store. If that is leaving you feeling overwhelmed or unsure about what to purchase, then you come to the precise publish. This is a fast breakdown of your choices that can assist you slim issues down.

Plug-in vs. free-standing
Essentially the most inexpensive Wi-Fi varies extenders are small plug-in units. They appear somewhat like night time lights or air fresheners, however as a substitute for spreading gentle or lavender by way of your property, they unfold a sooner Wi-Fi connection.
You will discover extenders from all types of producers as you store, however, your finest wager is simply to stay with the large, established names in wi-fi networking, comparable to Netgear, Linksys, TP-Hyperlink, D-Hyperlink, and Ubiquiti. If you could find an extender from the identical firm that makes your router, nice, however, most are designed to work with routers from all types of producers.
Essentially the most fundamental plug-in fashions will not value you greater than $50 apiece, and most will promise to ship speeds of up to a couple hundred megabits per second. That is ok for many. When you can preserve regular speeds above 50Mbps, then you need to be capable to surf the net, examine email, refresh your Twitter feed, and stream HD video.
Like all vary extenders, your finest wager is to position them someplace in between your router and the lifeless zone the place you’d most like to enhance speeds. Until you’ve got obtained a clear line of sight between the 2, then you definitely in all probability will not wish to put it a lot farther than 30 toes away from the router, and ideally with as few partitions as doable between the 2, and between the extender and your lifeless zone.
The identical goes for free-standing vary extenders designed to sit down out within the open on a desk or shelf. These are usually somewhat extra highly effective than their plug-in brethren, some promising to ship speeds of 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) or greater. Costs range, however you need to anticipate to pay wherever from $50 to $200 for an extender like this. You will discover some fancier plug-in fashions in that greater value vary, too, however in case you’re spending that a lot, then you definitely would possibly as nicely get a free-standing mannequin, since they tend to have extra room for antennas, ports, and different hardware.
For many, I feel a less expensive plug-in extender will do exactly effective, however, take into account an extra highly effective free-standing mannequin if you are going to be making loads of video calls, if you wish to play on-line video games or when you’ve got several relations who would possibly wish to stream video on the similar time. The additional oomph of a free-standing extender can go a great distance in conditions like these.

Twin-band vs. triband
One other key factor to search for is the variety of bands your vary extender can placing out. A dual-band extender will characteristic the same old 2.four and 5GHz networks, whereas a triband extender will add in a second 5GHz band at a better value.
Triband is a helpful improvement in case you’ve already utilized a triband router that may dedicate one in all its 5GHz bands to the vary extender alone — that’ll preserve the primary two bands free and clear to your common community site visitors. However in case you aren’t utilizing a router like that and you do not plan on upgrading to at least one, a triband varies extender might be overkill.

Wi-Fi 6 and different options to search for
As for options, you may wish to begin by contemplating fundamentals like antennas and ports. Plug-in vary extenders with the exterior, adjustable antennas would possibly provide a point of effective management over the energy of your connection that you just will not get with a mannequin that packs the antennas inside.
As for ports, you may get the quickest connection out of your extender in case you’re capable of wire your system proper to it with an Ethernet cable. If that is the method you wish to take, make sure you purchase an extender that has an Ethernet jack — some do not.
You will additionally wish to examine your router to make it possible for it has a Wi-Fi Protected Setup button as a result of numerous very extenders use that characteristic to attach. When you do, be happy to purchase from no matter the producer you want, offered that the vary extender has a WPS button of its personal. If not, then you wish to examine your router producer’s web site to see which vary extenders will probably be suitable along with your router — when unsure, simply stick to the identical firm and you have to be effective.
The latest and quickest vary extenders will help Wi-Fi 6 — the most recent, quickest model of Wi-Fi. When you’re an influence consumer who already owns a Wi-Fi 6 router, then an extender like this could value it. Most can in all probability make do with Wi-Fi 5, although. To inform the distinction, have a look at the pace score. “AC” connotes Wi-Fi 5, whereas “AX” connotes Wi-Fi 6.
One final possibility value contemplating: Powerline extenders that go a community connection by way of your property’s electrical wiring, usually with little to no loss in speeds. They seem like plug-in extenders, and you will want at the least two of them — one to plug in shut sufficient to your router so that you can wire the 2 along with an Ethernet cable, and one other to position someplace else in your house the place you wish to enhance speeds. These generally are a good variety in case you’d have too many partitions or different obstructions between the router and your extender to take care of a powerful wi-fi connection. With the powerline method, these obstructions do not matter.

Remember about mesh
When you’re attempting to get higher vary from your property’s Wi-Fi community, it is value asking your self in case you’d be higher off simply upgrading to a multipoint mesh router that is designed for that precise goal. Mesh techniques like these embrace a router and at least one devoted vary extender, and the hardware and software program that powers them is usually way more refined and streamlined than what you may get in case you attempt to piece collectively a mesh of your individual.
Mesh routers are rising in reputation and your choices are on the rise — together with heaps that are not too costly in any respect. A 3-piece, dual-band Netgear Orbi system solely prices $199, which is what you’d pay for a single high-end vary extender. In reality, as of scripting this, the fancier triband model of the Netgear Orbi is on sale for $199, too — although who is aware of how lengthy that deal will final.
When you wish to go all-out with an improvement, search for a triband mesh router that helps Wi-Fi 6.

Working From Home? 14 Sanity-Saving Tools (+ 35 Pro Tips)
Working from home is the dream for many.
For others, having to work from home is a nightmare — a paradigm shift brought on by a career change, personal tragedy, or the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
But dream or nightmare, a full-time switch or a temporary one, work-from-home jobs present unique challenges.
And to help you face those challenges, we’re going to teach you what you need to know. No fluff, no filler — just the necessities.
In This Guide: 9 Essentials for Your Home Office // 5 Apps You Need to Work Remotely // 35 Tips for Remote Workers (From Pros Who Do It Everyday)
Let’s dive in.
Note: There are quite a few referral links in this post, which means we’ll get a small commission if you use them to grab any of the tools or apps we discuss. However, there’s no extra cost to you. We appreciate your support.
5 Home Office Essentials (+ 4 to Consider)
There’s overlap between what you “need to do your job” in an office environment and what you need to do it remotely.
For example, you don’t need me to point out you need a chair. Or a Keurig, since you no longer swing by your favorite coffee shop on the way to work.
But there are items that matter more when you work from home, and they’re things that can make or break you as a remote worker.
Things like…
1. A Dedicated Workspace (Preferably One With a Door)
When you’re telecommuting for the first time, it’s tempting to pick up your laptop, plop down on the couch, and go about your workday.
But unless you’re living alone (and, honestly, even then), this is a mistake.
I should know — it’s precisely what I used to do. I was so happy to be working from home, I made our living room my home office.
“Why would I want to be hidden away on the other side of the house?” I asked my wife. “Being able to see you and the girls is one of the biggest perks of working from home.”
The problem?
It’s difficult to focus on work when you’re setting up shop in the same room your family members are using to dance to the “Frozen” soundtrack.
It’s a lesson I learned the hard way, but to achieve a healthy work-life balance, you have to separate your two worlds. And to do that, you have to be able to get away.
What Do We Recommend?
Pick a room with a door. A room you aren’t using for anything else is ideal, but commandeering a bedroom during the day will work too.
If a closed-off space for your home office isn’t an option, choose an area offering at least a modicum of privacy. This could be your dining room table, your kitchen counter, or the tiny nook under the stairs your kids haven’t yet discovered.
What’s the Cost?
Unless your significant other or roommate “makes you pay” in some way, claiming an area as your home office is free.
2. Headphones (Especially if There’s No Door)
If you used to work in a cubicle, or shared an office with a loud eater, you already know a good pair of headphones are worth their weight in gold.
Working remotely may mean you no longer have co-workers nearby to distract you, but it doesn’t mean you’re free from distractions.
A good headset will help keep outside noises at bay; plus, if you have a job where you’re on a lot of video conference calls, they’re a must-have item anyway.
What Do We Recommend?
Sony’s WH-1000XM3 ($278), the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 ($399), and Apple’s AirPods Pro ($249) are popular — but pricey — options, and they each have built-in microphones for making calls.
If you need something more budget-friendly, Anker’s Soundcore Life Q20 receives high marks from reviewers on Amazon. And, if needed, those old earbuds that came with your phone can work in a pinch.
What’s the Cost?
Anker’s Q20 costs $60. Those old earbuds are free (if you don’t count what you paid for the phone).
3. A Mac or Windows PC (But Not a Chromebook)
Most likely, you already have a laptop. Maybe you bought it yourself, or maybe it’s one issued to you by your employer.
But if you’re in the market for one, and you’re working remotely, take my advice:
Don’t buy a Chromebook (unless it’s your backup).
Three months before I started working at Smart Blogger, I bought a new laptop — a beautiful, shiny Google Pixelbook.
I loved it (and still do). But I wouldn’t have bought it had I known I was weeks away from a new career where I’d be working remotely.
Working from home meant using the Pixelbook for video conferencing, file sharing, and task management. For some apps and tools (Slack, Zoom), it was more than up for the challenge. For others (like GoToWebinar), it wasn’t.
Unless you have complete control over the tools your remote team members use to work together, having a Chromebook as your daily driver is a risk.
What Do We Recommend?
Stick with Windows or Mac for your primary work computer.
What’s the Cost?
The new Macbook Air and Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 both retail for $999. You can find Windows laptops from Dell, Lenovo, HP, and Acer for less (and more).
4. Strong Wi-Fi
When you work in a typical office, Internet connection is rarely a concern.
Small business or large, your employer has a plan that probably costs a small fortune. You go to work, do various online activities for 8 hours, and go home. Everything just works.
But when you work from home, you’re not using your employer’s wi-fi. You’re using yours.
Even if your employer reimburses you, it’s still your wi-fi service — and it probably doesn’t cost a small fortune. If you’re like most, you’re using the cheapest plan your ISP (Internet Service Provider) offers that lets you stream Hulu or Netflix without buffering.
That’s fine if you’re literally watching “Parks & Rec” for the seventh time. But when your job relies on you having fast and reliable Internet access, you may need more.
What Do We Recommend?
The speed and reliability of your wi-fi depends on a number of factors, but we’ll focus on three: your ISP plan, your modem, and your router.
Wi-Fi Plan:
Choose the best plan you can afford. If your employer reimburses you, get the highest plan they’ll allow. If all the plans suck, find a new ISP.
Modem:
If you rent your modem from your ISP, see if you’re eligible for an upgrade. Even better? Stop renting and buy a top-quality modem online (that’s what I did). You’ll get better performance, and you’ll save money in the long run.
Note: If you go this route, make sure you choose a modem that’s compatible with your ISP. Their website will be able to provide you a list.
Router:
To ensure your designated home office isn’t in a “dead zone,” a “mesh” wi-fi system can be a life saver. Personally, I opted for Google Nest WiFi in my home, but the Netgear Orbi is a solid option too. It gives you 4,500 square feet of coverage, and it received solid marks in Ry Crist’s CNET review.
What’s the Cost?
Wi-Fi plans vary.
Modems will cost anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars. Mesh wi-fi systems come in all shapes and sizes, but the two we discussed — Netgear Orbi and Google Nest WiFi — cost $196 and $239, respectively.
5. A Second Monitor
If you’re used to having a dual-monitor setup at work, switching to a single monitor is one of the hardest adjustments when you’re working from home.
Now, if working remotely is your new normal, you may decide to buy a monitor (or two) for your home office. But in the meantime, there’s a chance you already have a second screen at your disposal:
Your iPad.
If you have a Mac using macOS Catalina, you can use “Sidecar” to turn your iPad into a second display. And if you have a Windows PC (or an older Mac), you can use the Duet Display app.
What Do We Recommend?
Working at home doesn’t mean having to live without dual monitors. If you know you’ll be working from home permanently, find a new monitor on Amazon that fits your budget. Or, if you already own an iPad, double its usefulness by turning it into a second display.
What’s the Cost?
Cheap monitors start around $100.
Sidecar is included if you’re using a compatible Mac. The Duet Display app costs $9.99.
An iPad, if you already own it, is free. Otherwise, new iPads start around $279.
Home Office Gear: 4 More to Consider
The previous five items were pretty universal. If you’re working from home, there’s an excellent chance they were relevant to you and your situation.
These next four are a bit more niche, so we’ll run through them quickly:
6. A Standing Desk
In an office environment, there are meetings to walk to, TPS reports to shred, and water coolers to gossip around.
You don’t have those when you’re working from home, which is why many remote employees find themselves sitting for too many hours during the day.
It’s little wonder then why, when providing their expert tips (see below) for this post, two different members of the Smart Blogger team recommended standing desks to our readers.
And a third, yours truly, used a standing desk to write the words you’re reading right now:
Standing desks aren’t for everyone. But, they might be for you. You can learn more about them and their history in this write-up from Art of Manliness.
7. Ergonomic Keyboard 8. Ergonomic (Vertical) Mouse 9. Blue-Light Blocking Glasses
Many remote workers find themselves spending more time — not less — in front of their computers.
Meetings are now virtual…
You’re no longer in a coworking space where you’re snagged by colleagues for “two-second” conversations when you’re on your way to the bathroom…
As a result, a majority of your workday, if not all of it, is now spent staring at your computer screen, typing away on your keyboard, and mousing away with your mouse.
The result?
Strained eyes and sore wrists.
Until I started working from home, I never experienced these ailments. But thankfully, after doing some research, I was able to find tools to help me combat them.
Switching to the Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse solved my wrist pain. Blue Light Blocking Glasses from Swanwick helped my eye strain.
And if I decide to try an ergonomic keyword, Julia McCoy of Content Hacker has great things to say about the Kinesis Freestyle2.
If you find yourself struggling, give these a look.

5 Apps & Software for Working Remotely
There are lots of apps out there for remote workers. That’s why most “how to work from home” guides inundate you with dozens and dozens of tools that all sound the same and, more or less, do the same things.
It can be overwhelming. And confusing.
So, let’s keep things simple…
The apps and software you need to work from home can be grouped into just five categories. We’ll start with the one you’re probably most familiar with:
1. Video Chat Software
Next to eliminating their daily commute, the thing most people enjoy about remote jobs is “no more meetings.”
Yeah, about that.
While physically sitting next to co-workers might be a thing of the past when you’re remote working, video conferencing is common for many work-at-home jobs.
Plus, let’s face it:
You need social interaction when you’re working from home. You need face-to-face time. Otherwise, eventually, you’ll go stir-crazy.
The video chat app you use — Zoom, Microsoft’s Skype for Business, Google Hangouts — will be decided by your employer or project manager.
Knowing how to use your particular video calls app can save your sanity (and save you from possible embarrassment), so here are tutorials for each:
Zoom Video Tutorials
Getting Started with Skype
Hangouts Help
What Do We Recommend?
We primarily use Zoom for video calls at Smart Blogger. You don’t have to create an account or download any software to use it, which makes it very user friendly. If you have sway over the video chat software your team uses, Zoom is a good choice.
What’s the Cost?
A personal Zoom account is free, and you can host a meeting with up to 100 participants for up to 40 minutes. If you need more, their paid plans start at $14.99 a month.
2. File Sharing Software
Sharing files with colleagues used to be easy. Just save everything to your company’s LAN (local area network) and, boom, you’re done.
But unless your employer has a VPN server, sharing files while you’re working from home is a bit trickier.
Thankfully, we all have access to cloud storage services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. A full-featured collaboration tool like Confluence from Atlassian can work, too, by letting you attach files to pages.
Just like with video chat software, the file sharing app your team uses will be decided by your employer. Here are guides to help you learn the ins and outs of each:
Google Drive cheat sheet
Dropbox video tutorials
OneDrive video training
Manage Files (Confluence)
What Do We Recommend?
We use Google Drive at Smart Blogger. It works on Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS (plus Android and iOS). And, if you use Gmail, you’re likely already familiar with it.
Just make sure you understand how permissions work in Google Drive before sharing folders with your colleagues.
What’s the Cost?
A free Google Drive account comes with your Gmail address, and with it you get you 15 GB of cloud storage. But for sharing files as a virtual team, you should look into one of Google’s paid options. You can get a G Suite Business account for $12 per user each month, and it comes with unlimited Google Drive storage.
3. Task & Project Management Software
You may already be familiar with Kanban boards, integrated master schedules, and the like. Your team may already be using them.
But now that you’re working remotely, you’ll likely be leaning on them more and more.
Project management apps like Asana, monday.com, and Trello help virtual teams stay on track. And even if your team isn’t, there’s no reason you can’t use them to manage your own tasks.
What Do We Recommend?
Start Blogger uses Asana to manage our projects. However, several team members, including yours truly, also use Trello to track individual tasks.
What’s the Cost?
Both Asana and Trello offer free plans, which work great if your team is small (or if you’re using them alone). If you have a larger team, or you need more features:
Asana Premium is $10.99 per user (per month)
Trello Business is $9.99 per user (per month)
monday.com’s plans start at $39 per month (for 5 users)
4. Chat App for Team Interaction
You might be on opposite sides of your city, state, or country (or even the world), but your virtual team still needs to shoot the breeze and interact with each other.
(And no, emailing the entire office isn’t an option. Don’t be that person.)
Chat apps like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts Chat let you and your colleagues build comradery and stay engaged even though you’re miles apart.
In the remote worker’s toolkit, they’re a must-have tool. If you’ve never used them before, here are guides to help you get started:
Top 5 tips for getting started in Slack
Microsoft Teams video training
Get started with Hangouts Chat
What Do We Recommend?
Slack is the tool we use to interact with each other at Smart Blogger, and it’s difficult to imagine working from home without it.
What’s the Cost?
You can get a lot of mileage out of the free version of Slack. If you need to upgrade, paid plans start at $6.67 (and that’s for your entire team).
Microsoft Teams is included in Office 365. The Business Essentials plan is $5 per user each month, while the Business Premium plan is $12.50.
Google Hangouts Chat comes with a G Suite Business account. The Basic plan costs $6 per user each month.
5. Time Management App (to Help You Keep it All Straight)
Yeah, this one is a bit of a cheat.
You don’t have to be working from hope to benefit from a good time management tool.
But, trust me, when you’re working remotely, having one is vital.
Remote work can be deceptive. You think you’ll have all this extra time now that you’re no longer having to commute, do your hair, put on pants, what have you. Then five o’clock rolls around, and you’re suddenly wondering why you didn’t get more accomplished.
Try as you might, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is going to be tricky when you work at home. Laundry, personal errands, and playing with the kids will creep into your workday.
For increased productivity, and to keep all the balls you’re juggling from falling, an app like Todoist or Things can work wonders for your various to-do lists.
What Do We Recommend?
I’ve used Todoist for years. It’s easy to use, it’s packed with features, and it’s available on every major platform and device.
What’s the Cost?
The free version of Todoist gives you 80 projects and up to 5 people per project. If you need more, their paid plans start at only $3 per user each month.
If you don’t like the idea of recurring fees, and you’re an Apple user, give Things a look. The app has a one-time $9.99 fee for iPhone/Apple Watch, a one-time $19.99 fee for iPad, and a one-time $49.99 fee for Mac.

How to Work From Home: 35 Tips for Remote Workers (From Pros Who Do It Everyday)
Now for the fun part.
I reached out to some of my colleagues at Smart Blogger and asked them for their best “work from home” tips.
Here’s what they had to say:
1. If you’re single, having a pet really helps with feeling isolated
At Smart Blogger, nearly everyone has a dog or cat to keep them company throughout the day. We also bond over stories about our pets.
2. Schedule time to hang out with friends
Whether it’s a phone call or getting together for happy hour, I always try to have at least two or three “connection points” scheduled each week. For me, it’s usually other entrepreneurs, because I feel like they are the only people who “get” me, but the point is to be a bit more proactive with your social life. There’s a lot less serendipitous hanging out when you’re working from home.
3. Get an air purifier
I recently added an air purifier to my office, and I was shocked at how much it helped with my allergies and even the overall smell of the house.
— Jon Morrow Founder & CEO WFH Experience: 15 Years
4. Set clear boundaries on your time, tasks, and calls
This is one of the first and fuzziest challenges for most people. When you’re working, you’re working, not doing household chores or cooking. Strive to start and end your day at the same times, with a little flex because you can. Tell family and friends you’ll get back to them after work.
5. Shut off audio notifications on everything — phone, social media and email
Put your phone in sleep mode. Use the controls built in to your devices to silence them during your work hours so you’re not distracted. This will also help train those insistent family members and friends who “only need two mintues” that turns into 20 to leave a message. Be prepared for complaints.
6. Set ‘focus time’ when you shut off every form of online communication to work
I coined the term “go dark” at Smart Blogger so I could have several uninterrupted hours to work. I closed out of all programs and set a smiling dark moon face for my “status” in Slack. Works like gangbusters.
7. Use a focus music app with the Pomodoro technique
I use a Focus@Will, a personalized focus music app, but there are many others. My “Pomodoro” sweet spot is 50 minutes, so I set the app with my choice of music for 50 minutes with my coffee and water on my desk and everything else shut off. I’ve trained myself that when the music is on all I can do is work. It’s actually quite enjoyable to have that deep focus time. With breaks of 15-20 minutes between sessions, I can do three or four highly productive sessions in a row.
8. Don’t try to squeeze in household tasks
Other than unavoidable visits from the pest control guy and delivery or repair folks, forget multi-tasking. The distraction from a household task as mundane as laundry will kill your concentration.
9. Get, or create, a standing desk
My first standing desk was stacked cardboard boxes and a hunk of wood. It will save your back, legs and other parts. I upgraded to a height adjustable desk. Don’t neglect ergonomics for even a short period.
10. Don’t eat at your desk
Build in those short breaks from the beginning and eat outside when you can.
11. Wear blue light blocking glasses
This recent upgrade has saved my eyes from feeling fried at the end of the day. Use monitor apps like f.lux that adjust the color balance of your monitor throughout the day.
— Marsha Stopa Senior Instructor WFH Experience: 15 Years
12. Start the day with three important goals
It’s a commonly given piece of advice but it works for me. I write (or type) three work goals under the heading “What would make today awesome?” (I write down some personal goals too.) Not only does it focus you during the day but it also helps you recognize a good day. Sometimes I’ll feel like I didn’t have a great day, but then see that I got my three things done and realize it was better than I thought. And that’s a good feeling to end on.
13. Link healthy habits to fixed points in your day
I wanted to hydrate better and found it fairly easy to start the day with a large glass of water. That became an automatic habit within a week or so. However, I found it harder to keep drinking water later in the day. Now I attach it to other “cues” during the day. For instance, I have another glass of water just before walking my dog Cooper in the afternoon.
14. Extend productive working sessions a little past the point of comfort
If you’ve been “in the zone” on a challenging task but feel yourself flagging, push yourself to do another 10 minutes. I find this gives me an extra boost of motivation/energy and I’m probably still more productive in the tail end of focus time than I would be starting from scratch later.
15. Get a standing desk. And a standing mat. (But sit sometimes too)
Standing desks are great but they’re tough on your feet and knees if you don’t have a proper mat to stand on. Also, standing all day is arguably not much better than sitting all day, so vary things a little. I try to do at least a couple of short sessions sitting at my desk on my laptop. Ergonomically it’s not great, but I don’t do it for hours on end and it breaks up the standing.
16. Vary your equipment
My first career was as a software developer and wrote so much code that I gave myself carpal tunnel syndrome before that was even really a thing. At one point I even had a special foot pedal that worked as a shift key to relieve the strain on my pinky finger! I’m not a coder any more but still suffer from time to time and not just from typing — sometimes end the day with a bad case of “trackpad hand” from too many hours using too limited a range of movement. So sometimes I’ll switch to a regular mouse for a couple of days to change the gestures just a little.
17. Get a gaming monitor (but not for gaming)
After years of using a regular 16:9 monitor I recently upgraded to an “ultrawide” 21:9. Being able to have two or even three full page apps open side-by-side has made a noticeable difference to my productivity.
— Glen Long Chief Operating Officer WFH Experience: 10 Years
18. Learn to recognize when your most productive time is
I work best first thing in the morning and then late at night. During the day there are enough distractions for me to easily lose focus, so unless there’s an urgent problem to solve, I give myself space to do other things mid day.
Experiment with times during the day to see when you feel more productive and energized to do your work. It may surprise you.
Discovering that you are unproductive during certain hours also allows you to give yourself a break at those times, instead of stressing out about “not getting enough done”.
Bonus: If you work with international clients, you may find that your “odd” hours might fit nicely with their “on” hours for communication and appointments. 🙂
— Tim Gary Tech Wizard WFH Experience: 15 Years
19. Stretch and move around
Sitting or even standing in roughly the same place for several hours a day is not something your body will be thanking you for. Sitting for long periods is rough on your back and your behind, while standing is tough on your legs. Take breaks to stretch and move around. Getting your muscles and joints moving in a variety of ways can help prevent repetitive motion injuries like carpal tunnel.
20. Set boundaries with friends and family
Your work is important. Your time is important. It can be difficult for friends and family to understand that just because you work from home, doesn’t mean you aren’t working.
Make sure you set very clear boundaries with your friends and family about what your work hours are and whether or not you can be available to them during that time. You can set rules on what types of interactions are allowable during your working hours and what types of interactions must remain outside of your working hours.
This will help keep your working hours calmer, less chaotic, and more focused.
21. Have a separate space for work
Whether that means an actual home office, a section of your dining room or just a separate workspace on your computer, have a space for work that is separate from the rest of your life.
A separate space makes it easier for your brain to transition from working time, to non-working time. I use separate internet browsers for work and my personal hobbies. This way once my work day is done, I close everything that involves work — tabs, apps, etc. and if I use my computer after work all work stuff is safely tucked away out of sight.
22. Learn a bit about lighting
I’m not a photographer or videographer so lighting isn’t something I ever gave much thought to, but if you are going to have meetings with clients that may involve video it will be in your best interest to learn the very basics about lighting.
If you’re on a video meeting and there is more light behind you than in front of you, you’re going to show up on camera as quite a shadowy figure. Making sure your lit properly helps people see you better and makes the experience more comfortable for everyone involved.
Unless you’re going for a mysterious look…
— Jenn Arman Business Operations Manager WFH Experience: 10 Years
23. Create separate user profiles for your internet browser
If you use the same laptop/computer for both work and rummaging through the Internet on your offtime, you should create separate user profiles on your browser — especially if you, like me, tend to leave a lot of tabs open.
I have a separate profile for private use, for Smart Blogger tasks and for working on my own blog. When I need to start work, I open my Smarty Blogger browser, and it automatically opens the pages I need on a daily basis. Every other page that I frequently use, but don’t need all the time is bookmarked, so they’re only a click away.
24. Get out and catch some sun
When you work from home, you need to remind yourself to get out every now and again to catch some vitamin D. I had a period of a few months where I was spending all daylight hours inside, and frankly, it’s depressing. Take a break to go out for a short walk. It honestly helps keep you sane.
25. Have a routine, but be flexible
When you work from home, it can be harder to beat the procrastination monster. Having a steady routine can help you with this though.
Set a time at which you start each day. If you have a number of recurring tasks, tackle them in the same order. This will help prevent you from procrastinating on which task to start first.
On the other hand, while it’s good to have a routine, don’t forget that flexibility is one of the main perks of the job. You don’t have to be overly rigid. It’s okay to have a day where you start a little later, or you move one of your tasks to the end of the day, because you’re just not in the mood for it.
— Robert van Tongeren Instructor WFH Experience: 6 Years
26. Take mental breaks
Take a break every hour or so to disengage from your work and allow your brain to have a little playtime. Stick your earbuds in, go outside for 5-10 mins, breath, take in the surroundings and allow your mind to think of anything but your work tasks. Think of it as like taking a break between sets in a workout. I often find problems easier to solve, solutions will pop into my head after having a mental break.
27. Have a mobility/stretching routine
Sitting in the same position for hours can wreak havoc on your body, a good place to start is with a book called Deskbound: Standing up to a Sitting World by Kelly Starrett.
28. Level up your skills
Always look how you can improve and add more value for your clients. Ask yourself: How can I be better at my job, what skills do I need to learn or improve? How can I raise myself to a higher level?
29. Stay balanced
Have activities outside of work that you can constantly get better at and that are a natural expression of who you are. This helps keep you balanced. If I’m always working and serving others I end up feeling like a robot who has no time for myself.
— Curt Levey Customer Support Specialist WFH Experience: 4 Years
30. Communicate constantly to friends & family about your work schedule
Working remotely means that your schedule is often more flexible than your friends who work in an office — or are retired. I had to learn to set very clear boundaries: just because I’m at home in front of a computer, that doesn’t mean I can just pick up to go to a lunch date or attend a rehearsal at 2 in the afternoon.
Now that I’ve been working remotely for 10 years, most of my friends get it. But I still have to be clear about it from time to time, and especially when I’m visiting friends or family.
— Felicity Fields Operations Manager WFH Experience: 6 Years
31. Prioritize YOU time on your calendar
It’s so easy to let your calendar get jammed packed and even when you get up from your desk “at the end of the day”, it’s so easy to get sucked back into your workspace — because it’s just right there! So, in order to ensure that you leave time for yourself, to stretch, go for a walk, meditate or anything else that nurtures YOU, it’s critical to prioritize yourself by putting your self-care on your calendar before the calendar gets booked up.
32. Be sure to meal prep
Secondarily, because the above is true, and the community lunchroom isn’t a thing, it’s super easy to neglect eating healthy and it’s super simple to just ‘grab a bite’ which becomes anything handy, VS anything healthy. I mean the kitchen is just right there, right?! So making sure you meal-prep will enable you to ‘grab a bite’ in between all those meetings, but it will be a healthy bite, and your body and energy level will thank you. Besides, it’s easy to let the pounds creep up when you’re wearing yoga pants instead of ‘work clothes’ so it’s a nice way to treat yourself (and your waistline!) nicely. 🙂
— Patricia Sweeney Marketing Wizard WFH Experience: 14 Years
33. Enjoy the days you can work in pajamas, but don’t overuse them
Working in your pjs is one of the great perks of working from home, but it shouldn’t be your go to outfit. Put some time in your morning routine to get yourself prepared for “the office”. It will help you be more productive on your projects and improve your mood by setting the stage for a good day.
34. Make your home office somewhere you enjoy spending time
When you work in a standard office you’re often encouraged to personalize the space so you can feel comfortable. Do the same for your home office. Don’t let it get too cluttered. Make sure you have plenty of light. Splurge on a heater or ergonomic desk setup. Plants, diffusers, pictures, and music will keep you more energized in your workspace.
— Laurie Pillman Executive Assistant to the CEO WFH Experience: 5 Years
And here’s one from me:
35. Make sure you check in (and check out)
The thing I struggle with most as a remote worker is separating “work life” from “home life.” Even with a dedicated office space, it’s easy for my two worlds to blend.
What’s helped me is visualizing one of those old-school “time clocks” people used back in the day.
“Clock in” and it’s work time. I listen to Jon’s latest podcast episode, edit a draft from one of our writers, send an outreach email, etc.
“Clock out” and I focus on my personal life. I’ll look at my daughter’s homework, go over healthcare paperwork with my wife, do the dishes, etc.
Whichever world I’m in, I try to give it my complete and undivided attention.
— Kevin J. Duncan Editor-in-Chief WFH Experience: 1 Amazing Year
