Big thing I’ve got from my study of disability in the early modern period in Britain, including dissertation research?
Poor relief that gives money out to the poorest people is probably the most benefit per amount of money, but it’s *massively*, *massively* resented by wealthier people. Not only because it’s redistribution of wealth, given it was usually raised by local taxation, but because it takes both control and opportunities to benefit from them.
The big thing money gives is options, choice, and freedom. Wealthier people value having that and massively resent poorer people having it. They much prefer giving charity to paying their taxes because a) giving charity lets them keep control of the money, even at a remove, and b) they usually find a way to benefit more directly from it.
This is basically why we have the current social security systems we have, where so much more is spent on control and policing of the behaviour of poor and disabled people than actually helping. Universal benefits were popular when the systems were set up for a variety of reasons, including reducing resentment by wealthier people, but largely because means-testing is *more expensive* and *less efficient*than universal benefits.
Wealthier people screaming for more means-testing are doing so because they prefer to have more money spent on tormenting people who are struggling with the conditions that those wealthier people create and maintain because it benefits them than that money actually reaching them.
That’s not how they parse it in their heads, I’m sure, but it *is* the reality of the situation.

Hello besties
First things first, happy new year! I've been super busy ever since I've started my master's degree in France, (still waiting for my bachelor's degree to get sorted out by the unis.........) so I haven't been able to be online much.
I also haven't really drawn anything in a month, simply because I've had so many things to do irl
Either way, I'm currently chilling with @cheeseballs-sao and I'm going back to Germany on the 4th and then I'll have to be in France again the next day. Hopefully my life becomes less stressful during my second semester 😭 It's definitely better than the 3 semesters I did in France during the bachelor's program but it's still very exhausting, lol
Been waiting for the office which approves the state scholarships to get back to me since September, they've just ghosted me and I kinda need money 😐 been living off of my savings for 4 months and I don't want to wait any longer tbh
Either way, onto an easy 2024 hopefully 👌🏼 I don't have the strength for another turbulent year

I've had to correct so many people on this in the last couple days so, in case you were also unaware...
james cameron is an actual, very legit authority on deep sea submersibles, especially in relation to the titanic. he is one of the top authorities on it. in the entire fucking world. yall seem to conveniently forget how much of his life and his money has gone directly into research and development for deep sea exploration. he went to the challenger deep and only two people ever had been before him and it was over 50 years before. i'd go as far as to say we owe most of our data on the deep sea of the last 20 years almost directly to cameron. he's worked on solutions to help clean up ocean oil spills, he's helped nasa with the mars curiosity rover, he runs a green and sustainable business (with peter jackson even!!), he researches alternative energy solutions, he personally paid ransom money to save Guillermo del Toro's father beause that was his friend and he could help. he is one of the very few rich white guys that actually puts his money where his mouth is and one of the even fewer who says when he knows something, he actually really fucking knows it.
so yeah. there's a reason why he's been interviewed so much about it all and why people actually care about his opinions and facts.

Behind F1's Velvet Curtain
This article by Kate Wagner on her INEOS sponsored trip to the Austin GP at COTA last year was commissioned by Road and Track magazine and then taken down. Presumably because Kate has was pretty staunch in her opinions about what was essentially a paid trip.
It is exactly the kind of thing I have wanted to read about the felt experience of the money business of F1. It doesn't get into technicalities and does not produce any spreadsheets for reference. It's just, her experience of the presence of wealth in the sport.
She starts off by talking about how she has been covering cycling and NASCAR for a while now and both of those, in comparison, are scrappier sports with smaller sponsors and cheaper tickets.
What I also especially loved was how fascinated she was with the cars themselves, and how they seem like a true marvel of human engineering. She almost described the cars like these alien beasts that came into this dimension out of nowhere and were being constantly monitored and dueled with to furnish wins and glory (and shareholder value for sponsors).
I think I always had an understanding of the weird myth making surrounding F1 and the kind of media attention it attracts, but someone like Kate (who I have loved reading for a while now) putting it into perspective really made it click for me. This sport thrives off of the kind of cocoon it has built around it and understands exactly the certain exclusiveness it needs to maintain to keep the story alive.
Anyway, give it a read, especially because Road and Track is trying to bury it to not piss off sponsors.
#I think matt oxley was talking about how motogp has been struggling with money and hence dorna is trying to woo the American market#and the american tech sponsors#but bikes don't require as much data driven performance engineering as f1 cars do#Ducati is probably leading the operation in this regard because they have audi behind them#anyway I knew motogp does not produce the same level of wealth but I still decided to check numbers#Marc's net worth is $25Mn and he is arguably the best driver of his generation with enough sponsors behind him#Max's net worth in comparison is $165Mn easily over 6 times that of Marc#Vale's net worth is $200Mn but he is still somewhat of an outlier because his popularity far outweighs that of motogp itself#Lewis is still around $300Mn and he hasn't even retired yet#Schumacher was around $800Mn#I know net worth is a very stupid number to consider but driver net worth is an easy way to translate impact ig#the current Max to Mercedes rumours caused Merc valuation to rise by $11Bn#Billion! 11 of them!#honestly I frequently get desensitized to money just purely as a number because I am exposed to businesses with large valuations but#I still wanted a moment to reconsider how much money rides on this sport#and how that ties to how rich people function#just made me remember that Ocon is the last driver from a working class background#Fernando and Lewis are the only other with working class beginnings and both of them are over 35 and ridiculously talented#its not a sport for regular people to break into#Vale also started with karts and had to shift to bikes#anyway I love Kate Wagner please read this#and talk to me about money and F1#Kate wagner#f1#formula 1#road and track magazine#lewis hamiton#mercedes amg petronas f1 team#Mercedes#INEOS

It's kind of crazy to me how proud some people are to not know anything about taxes or income brackets in their own countries. very "I am morally correct for hating dentists because they are the ruling class (nothing to do with them poking my teeth)" kind of attitude

Important to remember: net worth does not equal money owned
It's mostly about the current price of the things they own- mainly stocks and property. So it's always changing, because the stocks are always changing. That's how you lose millions in a day.
Also that's how you avoid paying taxes-physical wealth is taxed, but stocks ownership and trading are not. Trust funds, even those going into tens of millions of dollars, are also not taxed.
That's the way they make money: keep it in a bank (and get a premium because banks like to have some liquidity on hand and want to keep their most profitable clients, it's very competitive), get an ultra low-interest loan with some stock as collateral and buy some property in a very desirable place, then sell it some time later, profit
If you have enough money, it's multiplying by itself.

Hi there! Can I ask what resources you're using to learn netting and filet lace? I usually use youtube for learning a new fiber art, but a lot of what I'm seeing is crochet to mimic the filet look. Or, like, it's in French. Any websites, videos, books, etc you've come across would be super helpful!
Hey!! I’m gonna go under the cut for this because I started typing it out and it got. Long. Anyways, here we go!!
My favorite book for netted lace (and for learning the netting techniques themselves) is netted lace: techniques and patterns by Margaret Morgan!! It teaches basic netted shapes, and it’s got patterns for lace doilies, as well as larger pieces too I believe. There are also some filet lace patterns there, but no instructions for the technique itself
Filet lace is… unfortunately a little bit harder in that I haven’t found something that actually definitively walks me through it in a way that I’d be able understand but I definitely do not speak for everyone there, so I’m gonna point you towards what I think are gonna be the best bets:
First off: Lacis, practical instructions in filet brodé or darning on net by Isabel A Simpson!! That one’s on internet archive so it’s pretty easy to access too. It also has a pattern that shows you the path that the thread is supposed to take when you embroider, and I’m hoping that that’ll kickstart a better understanding of how the actual technique works
Other than that, I’m gonna say The Technique of Filet Lace by Pauline Knight, also on internet archive- not entirely relevant but that one actually directly quotes the previously mentioned book, and both of them mention the lack of written instructional literature on the subject, so if nothing else were in good company adjsks. Also, as a warning, an issue I’ve been having is that a lot of instructional books spend a not insignificant amount of time teaching the netting technique itself which definitely makes sense but can also be a bit frustrating if you’re looking for the embroidery technique
The Priscilla netting book (if you look it up then the university of Arizona should have a free pdf) has a lot of good decorative stitches!! It can be a little hard to parse though
For a tutorial walking through two small patterns, there’s filet lace tutorial by elinor’s crafts on Wordpress!! I’m going to hyperlink that at the bottom of this because I came back to add this section and do not want to risk losing everything by rearranging alsdkdk
Luckily, patterns themselves are way easier to find- i’d go to antique pattern library for those, or again internet archive, where I usually just look up filet lace and have at it. I don’t think the language barrier will be as big an issue once the technique is down, or at the very least that’s what I’m hoping sjsjjs
I’d also very much recommend checking the back of any instructional books for like a bibliography kinda thing and using that for additional resources. Makes for a good jumping point!!!
And unfortunately that’s about all I’ve got!! As with anything self-taught, there is a very real possibility that there’s a HUGE gap in my knowledge that I am just outright unaware of so if that’s the case then I apologize in advance- that said, I hope this helps a bit!!!
Edit: if you have anywhere from $100-160 then there’s filet lace: introduction to the linen stitch by Marie-jo quinault. I absolutely cannot vouch for quality because I do not have $100-160 and the closest thing I’ve found to the content is a thirty second video of someone flipping through it but this one’s like my white whale ok supposedly its very detailed and illustrated and very very out of print from the looks of it. Pour one out, etcetera. It’s SO so expensive

the endless lists of things i need to do this year and on top of that going out of work for like two months this year, paying off my debts from tuition (it will be about 4K because 7.1% is brutal), buying gifts to people, keeping myself afloat, pass my assessments/exams, pass my two months placement, set aside a thousand each paycheck, contribute to an endless construction of whatever house stuff my entire family decides to build, fund my cravings, daily allowance if i am generous to myself, give mama some money, keep my relationship with people that’s hardly working because i just don’t have the time and energy to respond, and whatever else that i can hardly keep up with just thinking about it stresses me out. i need to work a full 72 hours before next placement every fortnight if i intend on surviving
#maybe i should look for jobs in the hospital now#it’s been months since i become a nurse#i doubt my references even remembers me at this point#or i can just stay in my job that’s stable right now and find a different job next year#oh have i mention i need to pay my insurance cover#because bestie is working and needs a safety net especially dealing with people#bruh#why am i not born in a family with generational wealth#also have i told you about how i complained to my mum of wether i can ever buy my own house because everything is getting expensive and she#was like just find a sugar daddy#my life is about to become an endless fanfic plot#should i start selling my feet#fuckin adulting#ugh#also i have the holidays to look forward to this year#after that on next year#what am i going to look forward to ???#how will i be surviving then ???#the only reasons or like one of the reasons i am barely getting through this year is because i have the holiday planned#ticket booked and my house getting prepared#also just fuckin hoping that my next placement comes earlier otherwise idk what i’d do with myself#that would be another set of paperworks and lialising with a fuck ton of people to just have my placement a bit earlier#in my own opinion#a headache i’d rather not have#if i do not buy or do those things i listed above#what am i going to wear#also i just want to bring mama’s sister at home too#just because shes getting older and it would be a good opportunity to bring the entire family together in one place

Society would rather ignore homeless people exist than to allow space for any semblance of a sense of responsibility in the wealthy to help them and all those in need, or allow even a sense of guilt for choosing to do nothing.
