CalmWriMo Day 29
[11/29/2023]
Update!
Wow, crazy that tomorrow is the last day. (0.0) So that at the very least is exciting. Otherwise today has been a little stressful, but most of that dissolved when I lost the last three hours to the beast that is being zoned while worldbuilding. (>v<) Even remembered that drinking water is a thing! So big plus there.

Blurb: Neocago Fashion
As stated previously: Appearances mean a lot in Neocago. In an instant clothing communicates the wearer's status, cliques or group affiliation, how dangerous they may be, and even simply how cool they are. This coupled with a booming desire for personalization has created many unique styles.
While decreasing in use and availability there is still clothing made from old world fabrics. These are most often handy downs that survived the tests of time, or at least what remains of them as patches to mend other clothing. While some new old world fabrics are still made, it is prohibitively expensive for all except for a select few. Instead most clothing and fabrics are made from nylon or polyester.
Styles:
Patchwear: More of a "pseudo-style" resulting from reusing and splicing pieces of clothing together. It is a common look in the Undercity, Junkyards, and with Nomads as a necessity because new clothing is either unavailable or usually not a higher priority than paying for food or shelter. The Uppercity has a very 'missing the point' type of high fashion that imitates this with perfectly good clothes after a few tourists felt particularly inspired following an Undercity trip.
Neo-Western: This style replicates the old western fashion using newer materials. The style's odd return is more for practical reasons, namely keeping dust common out in the Wastes and Yards off of under clothing and skin. High collars that help protect the wear's face and duster jackets are fairly common. Also for those that dare to venture out during the day a wide brimmed hat is a must.
Night Flash: This clothing came alongside the transition to a nocturnal lifestyle becoming the default. This clothing makes use of electronic lighting, reflective fabrics, and glowing materials atop a dark base to outline features or create designs. While typically the full fledged style is more common with party goers and clubs, other styles steal some tamed elements of Night Flash.
Polar-Grey: By far the most common across the Midcity and sees some use in parts of the Undercity and Uppercity. This style often has a few layers to account for cold winters as well as frequent strong winds coming off the lake. Like the name suggests this style relies on the monotony of the color grey. This is only broken by a single, typically bright, color localized to a couple small spots such as a stripe outlining the lapel or a scarf. Fake fur scarfs and detailing is sometimes incorporated. Polar-Grey is essentially the goto for business casual or streetwear.
Neo-Panasian: For a few decades before the Great Collapse there was a massive influx of Asian immigration to the US. Particularly from countries such as China, South Japan [yes, this is intentional], Korea, and Vietnam. In Chicago these people's settled closely together. In an effort to preserve and celebrate their cultural identities they made it a point to produce and wear the traditional styles of clothing from their homelands. After the Great Collapse this trend persisted, although a steep population drop resulted in a "squeeze" as these groups banded closer together to help each other survive. This caused the eventual birth of the Neo-Panasian style that blends many different traditional styles together along with incorporating some more modern trends.
Brutalist: A style that was directly inspired by the architecture of the same name. It frequently pairs darker colors with a rigid and angular design that commands the space around it in a powerful way. Like the architecture it was based on there is a lack of defining details beyond shape. It is frequently worn by higher ups of corporations for business and certain formal occasions.
Utopian: A very new style of clothing only ever used by the wealthy. It aims for a clean look with white and semi-transparent clothing. It has preference for more rounded shapes which sets it apart from the more angular Brutalist and Polar-Grey styles also frequent in the Uppercity. Inviting and calmer colors such as cyan, blue, green, and yellow are used in it's detailing along with shiny gold and silver trims. This style emphasis an artistic and futuristic approach with arches that lift away from the body among other little oddities.
Idolwear: This is the wild card of clothing. This is often worn by idols who are focused on directing attention to themselves as well as distinguishing themselves from others. While extremely diverse and in constant flux each week, there are some common themes. The two most frequent are exposed skin, which doesn't need much said, and a shoulder perch on at least one side. This shoulder perch is common to provide a place for a cam-drone to dock for both recharging on the go and to give a POV or close up camera angle. Otherwise, Idolwear takes elements from other styles or more unique individual designs.
[Oh boy... Was that a bit much? I didn't even exhaust all my notes... (0.0) Anyways and always, hope you had a lovely day, peace (^.^)v]

🍂 Luciano ; 🌳 Dahlia ; 🌻Mirlande ; 💫 everyone <3
Thank you @gloryride for the ask! 🥰
🍂 Does your OC enjoy hugs? What do they do as a show of affection for; their friends, their family, their significant other(s) or strangers? Overall, what are they like with recieving affection from others?
Luciano is very physical, so he loves hugs. As such he is also very physical with other people, and loves to touch them in any way to show them that he cares. A pat on the arm, a hug, holding hands, arm around shoulders... everything to prove to them that he's there for them. When is comes to strangers though, he is very careful. He doesn't like when strangers touch him, because he doesn't know their agenda. But when it comes to recieving affection, he is a bit wary, because he doesn't really feel like he's worth it. He has done some pretty bad things, and they weigh heavily on him. It takes a while for Kerry to break through, but when he finally does, Luciano know that they are for real.
🌳What is your OC's favorite way to relax after a stressful day? Do they have a favorite book to curl up with? A hobby? Or do they have a nice bubble bath and have an early night to bed?
As Dahlia works for Netwatch and is surrounded by technology most all day, she tends to want to go basic when she's finally off work. Curling up with a captivating mystery book is a perfect way to spend an evening in, especially with a steaming mug of organic tea straight from the UK. She also enjoys a long, hot shower and then sit curled up on the couch with Bryce and just talk.
🌻What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasure do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?
Mirlande's parents left Pacifica for the Aldecaldos when she was four years old. This has caused her to see wonders where most people see nothing. A sandstorm? It's just amazing that the wind can pick up so much sand, and isn't it amazing that no matter how hard we try, we can't tame nature? A shower after a hot day? Refreshing and delightful. Sitting under a starry night sky with Saul and just talk? That's everything. Happiness for her is the little things; a grateful smile from a friend, laughter, jokes, hugs. Things that make people who they are.
✨️What is your favorite fact about this character and why?
Silver Bennett: the fact that she's tenacious. She's been through so much shit, but despite her struggles she tries to keep a positive mind and keeps on fighting.
Neo Bennett: the fact that he's such a lousy driver it's almost hilarious. I also love the fact that River has just accepted it and, since Neo lives with him, just drives him everywhere. I think it's mostly for his own peace of mind of not having to worry about the thought of Neo behind the wheel.
Zander Carter-Collins: Zander once tricked Judy into a driklnking contest, which he won solely because Matteo poured water into his glas, but tequila into Judy's. He did it solely because Judy had promised that if he won, she'd teach him how to dive. Which, in and off itself, is weird, seeing as Zander is afraid of the ocean.
Luciano Rossi: he once finished a gig by accident, solely because he mistook his target for someone else. So when he picked the man's pocket, he accidentally found the shard he was going to steal anyway. Once he also managed to send Tyger Claws on a hunt by accidentally knocking a lamp over, which allowed him to sneak though, upload a virus to their computer and sneak out. Padre calls him 'Lucky Luca' because of it.
Dahlia Moore: she once turned down an offer to work for Arasaka solely because she disliked their attire. She may have left British aristocracy, but some things is harder to shake. Like fashion taste, for example.
Ximena Maddox: they're famous amongst the Nomad clans for once having managed to lose a tail of fifteen border patrol vehicles by driving into a sandstorm, stop their vehicle and then let them drive past them. They is actually surprised themself that it worked, but then again, patrol agents aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.
Mirlande Louissaint: her parents were adamant that she'd learn to speak creole fluently, because even though they'd left Pacifica, it was her heritage. But being Nomad, it's not often she gets to talk it, but people know when she's pissed, because she always swear and mutter angrily in creole when she is. And the Bright family is so used to it that they don't even react anymore - they just shrug and continue with what they're doing.

Thinking Like a Craftsman
Dedicated to the ideas of libertarian communism, libcom.org is a website that pursues the “political expression of the ever-present strands of co-operation and solidarity.” In March 2009 a contributor posting under the alias “Kambing” ventures the interesting thought that “the artisan” may qualify as “a rather attractive concept for a post-capitalist subject—it certainly beats the bourgeois star artist or proletarianized designer as a way of organizing creative activity.” However, “Kambing” continues, the concept of the artisan is at the same timedoomed as an attempt to overcome capitalism, as it can be so easily drawn back into capitalist processes of accumulation and dispossession. This is precisely the problem with a lot of autonomist (and anarchist) strategies for resistance or “exodus”—including some forms of anarcho-syndicalism.5This skepticism is only too familiar by now—any candidate put forward for the new revolutionary subject will be quickly rendered inappropriate, deficient, co-optable. The reasons for such pre-emptive skepticism, popular even among the most hard-line autonomists, anarchists, or anarcho-syndicalists, are manifold. However, a central argument for this co-optation is linked to the awe-inspiring malleability and adaptability of capitalism as such, accompanied by post-political renderings of “democracy,” helpful in reducing politics “to the negotiation of private interests,” as Slavoj Žižek puts it in his discussion of what he considers to be a symptomatic proximity between contemporary biopolitical capitalism and the post-operaist productivity of the multitude: “But what if, in a parallax shift, we perceive the capitalist network itself as the true excess over the flow of the productive multitude?”6The Fable of the Hedgehog and the Hare. The structure of the argument has been so thoroughly rehearsed in past decades that it has assumed a somewhat mythical truth. Capitalism is the shape-shifting creature-beast always already ahead and above—regardless of which revolutionary force tries to overthrow or subvert it—as it continually vampirizes any signs of resistance. It may be necessary to deploy the perceptual model of the parallax, as Žižek does, in order to maintain the structurally paranoiac—if absolutely legitimate—belief in capitalism’s shrewdness, which sometimes seems to resemble the clever hedgehog family in the Grimms’ fairytale “The Hare and the Hedgehog.” Its remarkable ability to re-invent itself and stay alive even as the current full-fledged crisis in interlinked systems of state and corporate capitalism turn capitalism-as-such into a transcendent miracle and/or metaphysical force with increasingly violent repercussions on the ground, with its most recent turn being the recruitment of state and legal powers. Referring to Carlo Vercellone’s 2006 book Capitalismo cognitivo, Žižek points to how profit becomes rent in postindustrial capitalism.7 The more capitalism behaves in “de-regulatory, ‘anti-statal,’ nomadic, deterritorializing” fashions, the more it “relies on increasingly authoritarian interventions of the state and its legal and other apparatuses.”8 While the “general intellect” in reality doesn’t appear to be that “general” or shared—with the products of the innumerable and increasingly dispersed multitudes becoming copyrighted, commoditized, and legally encapsulated as part of the accumulation of wealth by way of “rent”—the unity of the proletariat has split into three parts, following Žižek’s Hegelian idea of the future: white-collar “intellectual laborers,” blue-collar “old manual working class,” and the “outcasts (the unemployed, those living in slums and other interstices of public space).”9 Any possibility of solidarity amongst these factions appears to have been foreclosed, and in many respects the separation seems absolute. The liberal-multicultural self-image of the cognitive workforce doesn’t rhyme particularly well with the populist, nationalist position of the “old” working class, and both are further ostracized by the unruliness, illegality, and poverty of the outcasts who alienate white collar workers and blue collar workers alike, as they seem to indicate through their fate how imperiled their remaining privileges of citizenship may be.But Žižek’s Hegelian triad of postindustrial proletarian factions is debatable. The identities (intellectual laborers, working class, outcasts) are much too unstable, much too fluid and transient for a theorization of the (im)possibilities of overcoming capitalism. And it remains doubtful whether their insertion into the discourse provides more than a paralysis characterized by deadlock, tribal oppositions, and endless desolidarity. In fact, these and other identities shift according to (but also against) the self-transformation of capitalist institutions enabled by various neutralizations and recuperations. And these self-transformations entail wars of position, to use Gramsci’s term. As Chantal Mouffe put it a few years ago in pre-9/11, pessimism-of-the-intellect/optimism-of-the-will style: “although it might become worse, it might also become better.”10 Even Žižek—who has always endorsed a strong idea of capitalism, evincing a certain obsession with the task of proving capitalism’s fascinating, horrifying, and stupefying superiority as one that could only be seriously challenged by a return to the Leninist act—is himself looking for other actors and different processes now. Currently, his hope lies with the hopeless, the people fooled and victimized by “the whole drift of history”—in other words, the very “outcasts” from the proletarian triad mentioned above, those who are forced into improvisation, informality, clandestinity, as this is supposedly all they are left with in a “desperate situation.”11To rely on the desperation of others for one’s own idea of a successful insurrection is of course deeply romantic and utopian. Žižek may be right in asserting that waiting for the Revolution to be undertaken by others has been the fundamental error of too many leftists. However, would he count himself or anyone in his vicinity to be “desperate” enough to act, especially in a spirit of voluntarism and experimentation that would effectively dissolve the constraints of “freedom” as it is granted by neoliberalism? The “artisan” evoked by “Kambing,” though immediately disregarded as allegedly “doomed” to fail in the face of capitalism like so many others, may be an interesting figure to reconsider here—less out of interest in revolutionary politics than in envisioning alternate ways of organizing “creative activity” to replace and/or evade capitalist modes of production. As Raqs Media Collective have pointed out in their essay “Stubborn Structures and Insistent Seepage in a Networked World,” the figure of the artisan arrived historically before the worker and the artist, before “the drone and the genius,” while it enabled the “transfiguration of people into skills, of lives into working lives, into variable capital.”12 “The artisan,” Raqs claim, “is the vehicle that carried us all into the contemporary world.” However, after the artisan’s role in “making and trading things and knowledge” had been replaced by those of the worker and the artist, by the ubiquity of the commodity and the rarity of the art object, the artisan now seems to be returning, but in different guises—the migrant imbued with all kinds of tactical knowledges, the electronic pirate, or the neo-luddite, many of whom are immaterial laborers, pursuing processes of “imagining, understanding, and invoking a world, mimesis, projection and verisimilitude as well as the skillful deployment of a combination of reality and representation.”Interestingly (and similarly), “Kambing” distinguishes the “artisan” from the “bourgeois star artist” and the “proletarianized designer.” However, one may also imagine these distinct figures aligning—with each other and with others beyond themselves. These alignments or fusions would depend on an ability and a willingness to recognize and accept difference and diversity not only in one’s own social surroundings, but also within oneself as a subject. To acknowledge the fact that one may simultaneously inhabit more than one identity leads almost inevitably to co-operation with others that would go beyond the model of the homogeneous community. But, in Capital, Marx is highly skeptical of “co-operation” as a way out of capitalism: “Co-operation ever constitutes the fundamental form of the capitalist mode of production.” Its power isdeveloped gratuitously whenever the workmen are placed under given conditions and it is capital that places them under such conditions. Because this power costs capital nothing, and because, on the other hand, the labourer himself does not develop it before his labour belongs to capital, it appears as a power with which capital is endowed by Nature—a productive power that is immanent in capital.13A standardized bumper had been installed at the end of each car stall. It looked sleek, but the lower edge of each bumper was sharp metal, liable to scratch cars or calves. Some bumpers, though, had been turned back, on site, for safety. The irregularity of the turning showed that the job had been done manually, the steel smoothed and rounded wherever it might be unsafe to touch; the craftsman had thought for the architect.14The labor of modifying and repairing the work of others is certainly not groundbreaking in terms of anti-capitalist struggle per se. However, the physical skills, the attitude of care and circumspection, the inscription of a hand that performs “responsible” gestures, and so forth, all engender a shared authorship—in this case a cooperation between the absent architect’s and/or construction company’s work and the subsequent, careful labor of detecting and correcting the building’s design problems. This cooperation is neither contractually negotiated nor socially expected, but instead results from a specific situation in which a problem called for a solution. It is inseparable from local conditions and constraints, and should not be taken as a model for action. Yet, on other hand, it is intriguing, as it displays relationalities within material-social practices that usually remain unnoticed, and whose resourcefulness is thus overlooked.Paris scene with a goldsmith's shop , detail of a miniature from "La Vie de St Denis", 1317. Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. In some respects Sennett’s concept of “thinking like craftsmen” resembles a definition of “design” that Bruno Latour introduced the same year The Craftsman was published. Speaking at a conference held by the Design History Society in Cornwall, Latour differentiated “design” from the concepts of building or constructing. The process of designing, according to Latour, is marked by a certain semantic modesty—it is always a retroactive, never foundational, action, always re-design, and hence “post-Promethean.” Furthermore, the concept of design emphasizes the dimension of (manual, technical) abilities, of “skills,” which suggests a more cautious and precautionary (not directly tied to making and producing) engagement with problems on an increasingly larger scale (as with climate change). Then, too, design as a practice that engenders meaning and calls for interpretation thus tends to transform objects into things—irreducible to their status as facts or matter, being instead inhabited by causes, issues, and, more generally, semiotic skills. And finally, following Latour, design is inconceivable without an ethical dimension, without the distinction between good design and bad design—which also always renders design negotiable and controvertible.15 Here, at this site of dispute and negotiation, especially on an occasion in which the activity of design is “the whole fabric of our earthly existence,” Latour finds “a completely new political territory” opening up.16

Everything You Need to Know About Dressing for St. Patrick’s Day
How to Wear Green for St. Patricks Day
Sure and begorra, it’s time to cue up “Danny Boy” on the old bagpipes; take a wee shot of Jameson and head out the door for the parade dressed in your St. Patricks Day Suit, plastic bowler, and a lot of swagger. And if you don’t get brawl on your pub crawl, we’ll just assume you have the luck of the Irish … ’cause you sure don’t have their style. Don’t confuse tired old St. Patrick’s Day tropes with the modern way most Irish today celebrate their proud heritage. We tell you all you need to know about what to wear on St. Patrick's Day.
RELATED: St. Patrick's Day in Ireland
Irish Green Really Is a Thing
Why do we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day? “The color green is a symbol of our patriotism, a color found in our tricolor flag, while also linking to our country’s reputation for having plenty of green-drenched landscape,” explains Andy Collins of Dublin-based store Indigo & Cloth.
The green, white, and orange flag was originally developed to represent peace (using white) between Irish Catholics (green) and Protestants (orange), which, admittedly, has had a somewhat rocky history. If you want to wear that bright green, look for spring or Irish green. Emerald green and kelly are also both completely acceptable hues, but don’t get too hung up on specifics. As Collins said, grass, lime, cypress, and other hues from nature are also right. (Just don’t wear every green thing in your wardrobe, all at the same time.)
Compliments the Color Wheel
Focus on one or two shades, and then contrast with spring’s other bright colors, such as yellow, blue, or purple, grounded in neutrals. Keep things peaceful, though, and refrain from wearing green’s complementary color, orange. While it’s not exactly the insult it once was, it is considered to be the color of the “Unionists,” those Northern Irish who remained part of the United Kingdom; and, as mentioned, Protestants, who after all, don’t venerate saints at all.
From a fashion standpoint, green is also a key color for Spring 2019. Shop carefully and you’ll be on-trend for seasons to come, no matter your religious affiliation or country of origin.
“With wellness on everyone’s minds, green and green-cast neutrals are prominently featured throughout 2019,” says Brian M. Trunzo, senior trend consultant with fashion consultancy WGSN. “We’ve declared ‘Neo Mint’ the color to watch in 2020, and as a precursor to that, expect to see some dusty and washed out greens — think reimagined pastels — throughout the market.”
Using the Emerald Isle’s favorite tint as a foundation, the perfect holiday get-up might also include some Irish heritage in terms of those classic tweeds and cable sweaters, but don’t stand on tradition.
“The modern Irishman is now a well-traveled, globalized consumer,” says Collins. “Dublin nowadays is regarded as a very multicultural city, showcasing a wealth of international taste in terms of fashion. There’s a much greater sense of freedom with style, too. [My store] Indigo & Cloth is a testament to that, stocking a variety of international, sought after brands that locals and visitors can equally enjoy.”
RELATED: How to Dress in Your 20s
For suggestions on what to invest in for the St. Patrick’s Day parades and parties you’ll be attending, we gathered a few ideas to serve as inspiration.
Don’t Rain on the Style Parade
When it’s time to hit the streets for St. Patrick’s Day, do a quick check on the weather forecast and be prepared for anything. It’s spring so temperatures can yo-yo, and rain can come up unexpectedly. Rely on smart layering to get you through the day looking bleedin’ massive. Collins recommends a packable rain jacket as well as a lightweight knit and a T-shirt. Try this green K-Way Le Vrai Windbreaker that comes in it’s own handy fanny pack pouch. Toss that on with a pair of dark jeans for a look that’s sporty and functional. If it’s a little cooler, be prepared with a cheerful yellow Todd Snyder + Champion hoodie, or a J. Crew cotton sweater.
K-WAY Le Vrai Windbreaker, $100 at Nordstrom.com
J.Crew Cotton Crewneck Sweater, $49.50 at JCrew.com
Todd Snyder + Champion Terry Popover Hoodie Sweatshirt, $138 at ToddSnyder.com
Aran Sweater Style
The Aran sweaters Collin refers to have a tale attached, that Irish fishermen's wives knitted recognizable patterns into the pullovers so the drowned bodies of sailors could be more easily identified. That’s been certified as bunk, so we can give that old trope a rest, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a great addition to your wardrobe. Inis Meáin (pronounced innish man) is one of the Aran Islands for which the sweaters are named. The Inis Meáin Knitting Company has been making sweaters there since 1976, infusing the heritage of the island with cutting edge technology and the very finest yarns. Grab one of its bright lime linen shirts or simply a classic Fisherman style sweater to make a modern Irish style statement that will look just as great on St. Patrick’s Day as it will come cool evenings this summer. Pair either with camel 5-pocket pants or classic navy dress trousers.
Inis Meain Linen Shirt, $390 from InisMeain.com
Kerry Woollen Mills Aran Wool Sweater, from $96 at Amazon.com
Abercrombie Cable Knit Sweater, $39 at Abercrombie.com
Irish Style, Woven In
Margaret Molloy, of WearingIrish, a marketing initiative to introduce Irish fashion to the U.S. market, says “Irish fashion is all about sustainability and provenance, important trends in fashion right now that work well with the artisanal nature of Irish product. I recommend that guys focusing on wearing creations by Irish designers and be less literal about the color. To my mind, wearing Irish is a sophisticated way to wear green! That said, though, green is a very flattering color on all complexions.” Case in point, Ireland’s Donegal tweeds. The handwoven woolen fabric has been produced for centuries in County Donegal, and is renown for its softness and warmth.
RELATED: 5 Basic Color Coordination Rules
Molloy recommends checking out Magee 1866. (The company’s owners are so cool they sit on the Facebook’s small business council.) Check out the brand’s khaki washed linen Grandfather shirts and green country check Donegal tweed trim-fit blazers. Pair those with a technical chino, like these olive Nomad Proof trousers for a sophisticated look that will carry you throughout the day.
Magee Country Check Donegal Tweed Jacket, $440.25 at Magee.com
King & Priory Luxury Hunter Green Donegal Tweed Bow Tie, $19.99 at Amazon.com
Magee Herringbone Donegal Tweed Flat Cap, $50.56 at Magee.com
Accessories in the Bag
If you find yourself wanting a slighter showing of green, there are plenty of options that are much more subtle and can be incorporated into your wardrobe everyday without reminding you of any specific Irish celebration, good or bad.
Ties, socks, and bags are an easy way to infuse a little of the grassy hue when you are looking to go a little more festive, but maybe not a lot. Be careful to add one green accessory, not many, so that you don’t run the risk of looking like you went overboard with the color. One pair of stylish casual socks such as these from Arvin Goods, or this cargo stripe tie from The Tie Bar add just a hint of green to an otherwise neutral outfit. If you are really looking to invest in a green piece that will last for many St. Patty’s Days to come, this olive Bleecker backpack from Coach should do the job nicely.
If green just isn’t your color, but you do want to do your part to celebrate the day, try De Bruir, an Irish leather company offering some quite inventive leather bags and accessories. We particularly like the Parachuter bag and the quilted folio. They may not be olive (or chartreuse, or forest, or moss), but they will have everyone around you turning green with envy of your charmed taste.
Arvin Goods Casual Socks, $14 at ArvinGoods.com
The Tie Bar Cargo Stripe Tie, $19 at TheTieBar.com
Coach Bleecker Backpack, $750 at Coach.com
Irish or not, Catholic or not, St. Patrick’s Day is always one of the most fun holidays on the calendar. It reminds us that spring is just around the corner, and that coming together as a community for a parade, a party, and some music—and maybe a wee drink or two—are some of the luckiest things we can share with each other. Dressing in the many shades of green, the color of new growth and life, is all just part of the fun. Erin go Bragh!

A Brief History of Persian Architecture
Rooted in the traditions of nomadic tribes, the vast Persian Empire stretched from North Africa to Asia. Under the guidance of bold rulers, like Cyrus the Great, ancient Persians wrangled Mother Nature to further civic developments and fashioned sophisticated architecture still celebrated today.
Early History
Though strict historians date the original Persian Empire between 550 B.C. and 330 B.C., cultural evidence dates back to 5000 BC. Over decades, archeologists have discovered vibrant ceramics, 3D art, and animal imagery and sculptures from Persepolis and Susa, two cities that thrived between 3500 B.C. and 1200 BC.
Egyptian and Greek Infiltration
By the empire’s official start in 550 B.C., Egyptian and Greek culture infiltrated Persian artistic and architectural expression. Known as the Achaemenid Era, it’s marked by massive structures, square towers, bell-shaped columns, porticoes, and elevated terraces. Notably, artisans and architects of the time continued to incorporate animals into their work.
The death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. ushered in new aesthetic notes. Stone became the preferred building material, and craftsman furiously sculpted Hellenistic heads, which builders dutifully used to adorn public structures and private palaces. Stucco also rose to prominence at this time.
Enter Islam
Around the seventh century, regional residents embraced Islam, which corresponded to an increase in square brick buildings with domed tops. Pottery and metalwork also rose in popularity during this time, as did art featuring enamel and leaf gilding.
Enter Mongols
The 13th century brought the Mongol invasions, and countless, priceless artifacts were lost to war. However, by the 15th century, Persians had started construction on the iconic Maidan-I Shah complex while Chinese influences crept into area art.
The Safavids and Neo-Achaemenid
By 1501 A.D., the Safavid Empire had acquired the Persian throne and reigned for nearly 300 years. A cultural powerhouse, the Safavids commissioned large scale mural paintings, lots of portraiture and presumably the venerated Shahnameh paintings. The style of the time can be summed up with two adjectives: elaborate and ornate.
As the 17th century stepped up to bat, European and Indian influences digested distinctly Persian styles and regurgitated a hybrid culture. Starting in the 20th century, however, architects of the Neo-Achaemenid school resuscitated the ancient Persian aesthetic. Today, several public buildings in Tehran serve as exemplars.

Blending fine-grained case studies with overarching theory, this book seeks both to integrate Southeast Asia into world history and to rethink much of Eurasia's premodern past. It argues that Southeast Asia, Europe, Japan, China, and South Asia all embodied idiosyncratic versions of a Eurasian-wide pattern whereby local isolates cohered to form ever larger, more stable, more complex political and cultural systems. With accelerating force, climatic, commercial, and military stimuli joined to produce patterns of linear-cum-cyclic construction that became remarkably synchronized even between regions that had no contact with one another. Yet this study also distinguishes between two zones of integration, one where indigenous groups remained in control and a second where agency gravitated to external conquest elites. Here, then, is a fundamentally original view of Eurasia during a 1,000-year period that speaks to both historians of individual regions and those interested in global trends.
Victor Lieberman. "Volume 2. Mainland Mirrors: Europe, Japan, China, South Asia, and the Islands." Strange Parallels: Southeast Asia in Global Context, c.800–1830. Cambridge University Press, 2009. 976 pages.
The typical Southeast Asian realm remained what I term a “solar polity”: a system of quasi-sovereign satellites in orbit around a central sun whose gravitational pull, in lieu of fixed borders, ebbed with distance. Insofar as each planet had its own moons, which in turn had their dependencies, each satellite replicated in miniature the organization of the solar system as a whole. Moreover, the most distant tributaries might owe allegiance to more than one overlord, while in the rugged interior scattered hill peoples (including refugees from the valleys) often sought to escape entirely the attention of lowland rulers. Although these patterns persisted throughout the period under review, over time the gravitational pull of each sun increased markedly. That is to say, hill people became more sensitive to the cultural and political influence of lowland centers; distant, once independent states were reduced to tributary status; tributaries were converted to intermediate provinces; intermediate and local dynasts with independent military forces. As soon as the capital seemed vulnerable, provincial heads typically sought either to seize the capital and place themselves at the head of the imperial system or to break away from the system entirely. In fact, the sustained independence that many former provincial centers enjoyed during postcharter disorders arguably rendered their sovereign pretensions more credible than during the charter era itself. In both Burma and Siam the late-16thcentury collapse was precipitated by the joining of ambitious provincial leaders with foreign invaders to attack the capital.
Largely in response to these disasters, in the late 1500s and early 1600s the reconstituted empires of Burma and Siam undertook administrative experiments designed, as it were, to strengthen the gravitational pull of the capital. As negotiated with local power holders, who were among the first to recognize the need for more effective central coordination, and as elaborated by the mid-17th century, these reforms rendered the king more ceremonially remote; replaced august viceroys in the provinces with more docile nonprincely governors; insisted that the crown, rather than governors, appoint subgubernatorial officials at major provincial towns; markedly increased the capital’s military superiority over provincial centers; and strengthened patronage links between capital officials and quasi-hereditary local headmen. In close cooperation with the latter, sometimes termed the “gentry,” royal officials extended censuses and cadastres into the provinces, multiplied written communications, and used the resultant information to systematize taxes and to enlarge the ranks of hereditary or quasi-hereditary servicemen (ahmu-dans in Burma, phrai luang in Siam) obliged to provide the crown with specialized military or civilian labor.31 In the interest of military mobilization and fiscal extraction, service reform in turn required more elaborate efforts at social regulation, extending in Burma to an insistence on endogamy among ahmu-dan service units. Burma and Siam also eroded the autonomy of tributaries and retained, in some cases tightened, postcharter curbs on Buddhist monastic landholding and ordination.
[...]
At first sight, administrative trends in Vietnam appear less linear than in Burma or Siam. In the late 1400s the Neo-Confucian revolution introduced a full-blooded Chinese-style bureaucracy, complete with civil service exams, elaborate written communications, novel maps and military itineraries, three layers of appointed officials, and increasingly effective curbs on Buddhist landholding. From the late 1500s, however, oligarchic pressures, military exigency, and non-Chinese cultural influences combined periodically to erode Sinic practices in favor of more patrimonial, more characteristically Southeast Asian forms. This was true in the north for long periods and more especially on the southern frontier. Yet even in the latter zone, as the influence of Chinese ´emigr´es and local literati increased, Neo-Confucian techniques gradually acquired normative prestige. In the early 1800s, after unifying the entire Vietnamese-speaking world, the southern-based Nguyen regime again openly embraced Chinese-style provincial administration in an ambitious effort, by no means unsuccessful, to integrate its fissiparous, elongated domain. In this sense, albeit by looking more directly to China than to north Vietnamese precedents, the Nguyen resumed and intensified Sinicizing trends apparent in the 15th and 17th centuries.
[...]
One could also argue that by facilitating long-distance interactions with diverse peoples, nomadism promoted effective strategies for controlling the logistical and cultural challenges typical of large-scale empires. By contrast, Song (and to a lesser extent Ming) cultural and physical distance from the steppe left them less able than their Sui and Tang, not to mention Mongol and Manchu, counterparts to forge extensive tribal alliances in general, and to acquire desperately needed cavalry mounts in particular.Without steppe allies or reliable purchase of frontier horses (China proper could never compete with the steppe as an environment for breeding and raising horses), Chinese dynasties were obliged to surrender strategic control of the steppe frontier. We shall find that a similar dependence on imported horses disadvantaged agrarian India.
Yet as in Southwest and South Asia, cavalry would have been inadequate to ensure Inner Asian dominance were it not combined with systematic borrowing from agrarian cultures. In explaining the success of the most durable Inner Asian empires, Thomas Barfield was surely justified in emphasizing the combinative role of mixed ecological and cultural zones, what he termed “Manchurian” states, on the interface between Inner Asia and China proper. Here, beyond the reach of Chinese armies, frontier polities like that of the Qing could experiment with elements from both worlds, wedding Inner Asian cavalry and tribal organization to Chinese economy, military techniques, administration, and ideology.217 Now, as Nicola Di Cosmo has shown, in part Inner Asian state formation reflected internal rhythms – he posits a recurrent progression from economic crisis to charismatic leadership to centralized organizations to a search for revenues to sustain those organizations – that did not depend directly on developments in sedentary societies. We find powerful Inner Asian confederations during periods of Chinese political cohesion as well as fragmentation, of economic expansion as well as contraction.218 But over the long run Inner Asian resources and cultural repertoires also benefited substantially from a secular expansion of trade and population along the Chinese/Inner Asian frontier. During China’s first commercial revolution, c. 800/900– 1270, for example, the growth of Chinese settlement and trade provided Tanguts, Khitans, Jurchens, and Mongols with invaluable revenues, administrative and financial expertise.219 Shortly after the start of the second commercial revolution, Iwai Shikegi argues that Manchu power fed on the booming exchange of Inner Asian horses, livestock, furs, and ginseng for Chinese textiles, farm implements, grain, and silver. Because New World silver entering at the coast flowed disproportionately to the northern frontier to pay Ming garrisons, commerce was actually far livelier in this sector than in much of the Chinese interior. Early Manchu commercial monopolies not only provided income, but allowed Manchu leaders to bring within their political orbit a mixed population of Jurchens (amalgamated to form “Manchus” in 1635), Koreans, Mongols, and Chinese. In somewhat similar fashion, I suggested, Tai entry into Southeast Asian lowlands in the 12th and 13th centuries owed much to growing commercial and cultural exchange across charter-era frontiers, while in South Asia between c. 1000 and 1300 and again between 1550 and 1700 we shall find that economic expansion drew together arid-zone warriors and arable-zone cultivators both within the subcontinent and along the interface between India and Inner Asia.220

Test Drives: It’s Summertime & You Need These Palettes
Summer is officially in full swing which means that there’s plenty of fun and bright makeup that’s just perfect for the season. Whether you’re channeling a bold look for a wedding or tropical vibes for your honeymoon, I’ve got a few fun palettes—plus some other goodies I used in today’s look—that are perfect for everything bridal from weddings to bachelorette parties to your honeymoon. As usual, I’ll highlight what was gifted to me by the brand versus purchased and full makeup details will be at the end!
So today’s look was a fun little play into color for me thanks to the wig on top of the very bright and glittery eye that I created. This weekend was the 37th annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. While I didn’t attend, I decided to create an aquatic vibe to pay homage to an NYC tradition. Even though I used a few different things to create this look, today’s Test Drive is highlighting the following palettes: Crown Brush Cosmo Collection (top), HipDot Rio (right), Coastal Scents Creative Me (not pictured), and Nomad Harajuku (left). And as you can see above, I have a few random shadows and a lip color there—those are some unnamed items that I’m working on for an influencer makeup collab with a cool indie brand. Details on that to follow as it rolls out. :) So, let’s dig in!
Crown Brush Cosmo Collection (purchased)
I picked this goodie up at The Makeup Show for a ridiculously low price. I want to say I probably only paid like $5 for this massive 28 shade palette. It’s definitely out of my comfort zone since it’s so focused on bold hues, but that’s exactly why I bought it. While I originally planned to use more color from this, I ended up solely using one of the warm taupe shades as an all over base for my lids because I knew I wanted to use a bold blue-green from my upcoming line and I didn’t want this to compete with it. I’ve used Crown’s other palettes before in a previous Test Drives post and I know that they’re amazing in terms of blend-ability, minimal to no fallout, and bold color payoff.
While not promoted here, my upper lid features a color from another Crown Brush palette, the 10 Color Fuego Palette that I also bought at The Makeup Show. P.S. The Cosmo Collection palette is currently on sale on Crown’s site for $4.95 so at a price like that, you really can’t go wrong with this one.
HipDot Rio Pressed Eye Shadow Palette (gifted)
Okay, there’s a lot to love about this palette. First as you can see, these are bold tropical colors. But what really drew me were the three glittery hues. I fell in love with that rich teal glitter shade (palms) and wanted to use it as an accent. Even though this is a fairly chunky glitter as you can see from the top picture, it was actually very easy to apply and didn’t get all over the place—which can normally happen with bold glitters like this.
Second, I love the way this palette opens. It has a built in mirror, but it opens in a Z-shape so that the mirror is naturally propped up and you don’t have to manually hold it open to use the mirror. Third, while I did use Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas, I didn’t use a setting spray since I wasn’t planning on leaving the house. But I’m now more than 6 hours post application and the glitter is staying in place with no real transfer to other parts of my lid or face overall.
Coastal Scents Creative Me Palette (purchased)
I bought this during Black Friday last year and I’ve used it once or twice in a previous Test Drives article. As you can see, this is also an ultra bold palette. So I opted to use the bottom right hue as my lower lid base and used a blue-green shimmer shade from my upcoming palette as the center lid accent. I’ve been a fan of Coastal Scents for a while because in addition to being budget friendly, their products are very well made. The shades are bold, richly pigmented, and provide true color with minimal to no fall out because they’re finely milled.
Nomad Harajuku Palette (gifted)
Okay, I was super hyped when I got this palette last weekend. First of all, you guys know I’m obsessed with Japan and especially Tokyo. And Harajuku is the district to visit if you’re into alternative fashion and that Tokyo street style (looking at you Tumblr users). And just like the HipDot palette, this particular one also features 15 colors but with five of them being glittery hues. I ended up using Otaku the lower right pan as an accent for my inner corners. What’s interesting about that glittery shade is that it basically takes on the color of whatever shadow is under it. It looks like a cute soft pink hue in the pan, but it’s really more of a sheer shimmer overlay option.
Notable Mentions:
While I didn’t include them officially in this round up, I also used the CTZN Nudiversal lip in Mexico City which I mixed with a liquid lip from my upcoming collection. I’ll feature CTZN in a future Test Drives article because this was a pretty awesome hue and in terms of being able to find a nude that actually works for your skin tone, CTZN hit the mark very well.
Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas is definitely an awesome primer. I’ve been playing with it for a week or two now but it deserves its own Test Drives feature as well.
So clearly, I loved everything I used today. And I ended up using way more palettes than I had originally planned—but it still came out looking pretty fab. If you’re curious how this makeup look would appear when contrasted against more natural hair colors, I also took a pic of this look with my actual hair out.
One of the main inspirations for the color story I chose today was the wig I’m wearing. And of course, if you love the wig and want to make it your own, you can shop for it here.
It’s a fun little synthetic wig I bought on Amazon and I didn’t even spend more than $30 for it. As I’ve mentioned previously, I don’t buy human hair if it’s a fantasy color that I know I’m not going to wear consistently. But I’m still spoiled by quality full lace wigs so I can’t wear a synthetic wig that doesn’t at least have a natural looking part.
Anywho, for more on fantasy color hair, check out my previous article which also links to some of my other hair color articles. And keep scrolling for more info on my makeup look.
Check out more Test Drives here.

Breaking News: 2019 - Don wants presidential aspirants to make literacy a campaign promise
New Post has been published on https://www.thisdaynews.net/2018/07/06/breaking-news-2019-don-wants-presidential-aspirants-to-make-literacy-a-campaign-promise/
Breaking News: 2019 - Don wants presidential aspirants to make literacy a campaign promise
Rashid Aderinoye, a professor of Literacy and Open Distance Learning at the University of Ibadan, has urged aspirants in the 2019 presidential election to make literacy a cardinal campaign programme.
The don also recommended that the years 2021 to 2025 be declared as “Campaign to free Nigeria of illiteracy.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that Aderinoye spoke on Thursday while delivering an inaugural lecture at the university entitled: “Literacy and Sustainable National Development: A Tripod of Intervention.”
According to him, Nigeria being one of the nine most populous nations could only overcome its illiteracy problem if greater attention is paid to distance education as a national strategy.
He said literacy and adult education had been much neglected at the expense of the formal education system.
“Mr Vice Chancellor sir, it is a serious catastrophe, that 72 years after the very first literacy initiative in Nigeria, about 75 per cent to 80 per cent of the Nigerian populace are still regarded as illiterates.
“Also, the World Bank group report for 2018 specifically stated that only 20 per cent of young Nigerian adults who have completed primary education can read.
”This should get us thinking in its implications for building a knowledge-based economy,’’ he said .
Aderinoye said literacy for individuals and families boosts human capital, improves economic opportunities, promotes health and expands the ability to make effective choices.
He advocated the need for media support for the delivery of literacy and adult education programmes.
“Some countries such as Cuba, Niger, Togo and Tanzania painstakingly canvassed for the inclusion of radio, television and other print materials for delivering of literacy and other adults education programmes,’’ he said.
The don, who was a former Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Nomadic Education, said with the support of the African Development Bank, more than 200 nomads were made functional neo-literates.
“The people were trained in beekeeping, shea-butter production and fashion design under the functional literacy programmes of the commission.
“If this effort is sustained Nigeria will be a leading producer of honey as well as shea-butter oil, ” he said.
Aderinoye also canvassed for a university each from six geo-political zones to be adopted as literacy research and documentation centre to develop the needful for the free Nigeria of illiteracy campaign.
