In "Long Walk to Freedom", Nelson Mandela said:
"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
~~~~~
His tombstone has no name.
He was called "a man of a great many ethics, and very intense about his human rights beliefs, causes he could never put down."
Before his journey, however, he did and said things he would later regret.
He was born in 1943, two days after July 4th.
Growing up in a conservative environment on military bases in Georgia and South Carolina, he admitted he was a "white racist" and a homophobic.
“I spent most of my life putting others down,” he said.
He was part of the crowd shouting, "2 - 4 - 6 - 8, we don't want to integrate."
He said he "idolized the Confederate flag . . . [it was] a symbol of the past and the way things were and they should still be. Not necessarily slavery, but the white of white—the right of white oppression.”
He also subscribed to the myth that “to be gay it meant that I had to wear a woman’s dress, I had to molest little children, and I had to go in bathrooms and watch people.”
“I had a low self-image of myself. So if I could have someone who was lower than I was, the Black American… even . . . Jewish people in general . . . as long as I could put someone else down, then I wasn’t the lowest person on the totem pole. So I spent most of my life putting others down.”
“I’d use the word queer and fag*ot and put gays down,” he admitted.
~~~~~
"He followed his father’s footsteps into the Air Force in 1963 at the age of 19 and served three tours in Vietnam," according to writer David Roza in June 2021's Task and Purpose military news.
Despite the beliefs he grew up with, he became a hero.
He earned a Bronze Star for killing two Viet Cong soldiers attacking his post while he was on sentry duty, according to the Washington Post. He later earned a Purple Heart for being wounded after stepping on a Viet Cong land mine.
At that time, he still was wary of anyone different than him and still believed in the stereotypes he grew up with.
In the military, outside in the world, however, he started questioning his previous beliefs and those stereotypes.
He became friends with a Vietnamese interpreter and learned about other cultures.
He then became friends with a Black colleague.
After getting to know his Black friend, he told himself, “‘he’s different, he’s not like the rest.’ And then I met another Black who was different, not like the rest, and then another one who was different, not like the rest. Until I began to look around and see so many different individuals.”
He also started learning about himself.
"Over time, his bias against homosexuals began to fade, along with his bias against African-Americans, who he found himself serving alongside and taking orders from during his time in the Air Force," wrote Roza.
“One stereotype after another stereotype started to crumble,” he told The New York Times.
Learning about others led him to learn more about himself.
He realized he went to Vietnam to prove he was masculine, he said, but instead he became something more.
He found the courage to be himself.
He said he always knew, but had continued to deny it.
“In September 1975, a stunning issue of TIME magazine hit the newsstands,” according to writer Kay Tobin Lahusen. “On the cover was the photo of a young man wearing his Air Force uniform."
“I am a homosexual” read the title in bold under the airman’s uniformed portrait.
"His name tag said 'Matlovich'."
Leonard Matlovich.
The Peace Page has previously shared stories of Leonard Matlovich, but this story includes some rare insights, including words from Matlovich himself.
~~~~~
When Matlovich appeared in Time, “It marked the first time the young gay movement had made the cover of a major newsweekly,” according to author Randy Shilts in his 1993 book "Conduct Unbecoming", about discrimination against lesbians and gays in the military. “To a movement still struggling for legitimacy, the event was a major turning point.”
“Even the most hardened homophobe had to take pause when he reviewed Matlovich’s record,” Shilts wrote. “Credentials such as a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and twelve years of outstanding service meant something that civilians could barely imagine.”
Matlovich's media appearances had a big effect on America,” according to David Addlestone, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union. "He was a patriotic, conservative middle-class war hero. He destroyed the popular myth of homosexuality."
Matlovich, the LGBTQ rights pioneer, was the first gay service member to purposely out himself to the military to fight their ban on gays, and perhaps the best-known openly gay man in the United States of America in the 1970s next to Harvey Milk.
He was “inspired and guided by gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny, who had been looking for a test court case to challenge the military’s ban on homosexuals," according to Making Gay History.
“He … was the epitome of a perfect soldier, one of those people that stuck his neck out, and he was proud to be the person to challenge that law,” Jeff Dupre, a longtime friend of Matlovich, told NPR in 2015.
He “was the kind of serviceman the air force prided itself on,” according to writer Naveena Kottoor.
When he finally came out, at the age of 30, he was warned that he would be throwing “away 13 years of military service and a pension", according to Addlestone.
When “an Air Force attorney asked him if he would sign a document pledging to ‘never practice homosexuality again’ in exchange for being allowed to remain in the Air Force,” he refused.
He replied that “he couldn't live a lie" any longer.
In October of 1975 - despite his exemplary military record, tours of duty in Vietnam, and high performance evaluations - Leonard Matlovich was ruled unfit for service and discharged, according to Back 2 Stonewall.
“In 1980 he finally won reinstatement, which he declined; the Air Force upgraded him to an honorable discharge,” according to "Gay Alternatives".
~~~~~
“Throughout American history, LGBTQ+ citizens have fought to defend our rights and freedoms -- from the Founding of our nation to the Civil War, from the trenches of two World Wars to Korea and Vietnam, and from Afghanistan to Iraq,” said Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III in the Opening Remarks at DOD Pride Month Event, June 9, 2021.
“They fought for our country even when our country wouldn’t fight for them . . . Even as some were forced to hide who they were… or to hang up their uniforms.”
~~~~~
Matlovich’s case inspired other enlisted gay and lesbian people to fight for their right to serve, including Navy officer Vernon E. “Copy” Berg, according to Making Gay History.
“Matlovich’s LGBTQ activism did not end with his court case. He lent his voice and influence to several battles against homophobia: Anita Bryant’s anti-gay crusade; California Proposition 6, which sought to ban gay and lesbian teachers from public schools.”
In June 1987, Matlovich was one of 64 demonstrators arrested protesting the White House’s AIDS policies,” according to the Washington Post.
“He also contributed to the founding of Affirmation, an affinity group for LGBTQ Mormons, and forced Northwest Airlines to end its discriminatory policy regarding passengers with AIDS.”
“Matlovich [is also] lovingly memorialized on the AIDS Quilt."
In June 2019, Matlovich was one of the inaugural 50 American “pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes” inducted on the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor within the Stonewall National Monument (SNM) in New York City’s Stonewall Inn, the first U.S. national monument dedicated to LGBTQ rights and history, and the wall’s unveiling was timed to take place during the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
~~~~~
Matlovich said that his fight was inspired by Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. whose portrait he had in his home.
"He explicitly gave credit to the black Civil Rights Movement, and Martin Luther King Jr. specifically, for giving him more courage to understand that gays were a minority group and they had not just the right, but the obligation to fight for their own rights," said Michael Bedwell, Matlovich's best friend and estate executor.
Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", which his widow Coretta Scott King reminded everyone of, when she spoke out for gay rights.
In an interview with Studs Terkel, Matlovich said, "the debt I owe to Black Americans, and probably the debt that America owes to Black Americans, probably will never be repaid. Because they have shown us that through perseverance and determination, the laws can be changed, and attitudes can be changed.”
It inspired him to be a race relations counselor, easing racial tensions in the service.
"He was brilliant at it," said Bedwell. "At his discharge hearing, one of his supervisors that was African-American testified he was one of best race relations instructors they had."
Some of his strongest supporters were Black.
"Out of the 20-some witnesses that came on my behalf, there were three white witnesses and about 19 Black," Matlovich said. "And it seemed—to me, it was a little shameful to me that, I remember back in my white racist days, that the very individuals who I put down came to my aid when I needed it the most. I guess people can forgive and forget, and people can change . . . You’re never too old to change and to become enlightened and to change."
~~~~~
Matlovich said the most difficult part of his journey was having to tell his parents, especially his father.
“He cried when he first heard about it. It’s, it’s hard to have a child that’s gay in America today because they are so discriminated against.”
But, in the end, he supported his son, saying, “If he can take it. I can.”
~~~~~
“Just to love and be loved, I think is very, very beautiful,” Matlovich said. “And that parents growing up today will give our little children guns, and we are very proud of them when they play Cowboys and Indians and run around. But when they show emotions and, and love. . . people get uptight, and they’re so afraid that their child may, may love. It’s very sad.”
Growing up and realizing he was gay, he said in an interview with the New York Times in 1975:
"I cried. I wept, hoping it would change. I believed absolutely that homosexuality was terrible and degrading."
In the interview with Terkel, he said:
“Jesus said that you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. And I believe that truth is who you are and what you are. And once you know those things, you are set free. And once you can accept who you are and what you are, then you can love others. You can’t love others until you love yourself, and as long as you hate yourself you’re gonna hate others.”
In his last public speech before he died, Matlovich tearfully said, “I want you to look at the flag, our rainbow flag, and I want you to look at it with pride in your heart, because we too have a dream. And what is our dream? Ours is more than an American dream. It's a universal dream. Because in South Africa, we're black and white, and in Northern Ireland, we're Protestant and Catholic, and in Israel we're Jew and Muslim. And our mission is to reach out and teach people to love, and not to hate. "
~~~~~
Matlovich said, “I knew, for example, that when Americans went to the Vietnam Memorial to remember and honor those who gave their lives fighting that horrible war, it never occurred to them that some of those who were the strongest, bravest and most heroic were also gay.”
He was buried with full military honors at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The inscription on his tombstone, which he wrote himself and is meant to be a memorial to all gay veterans, has no name.
It simply reads:
"A Gay Vietnam Veteran"
and the words . . .
"When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one."
~~~~~
“It’s a crazy mixed up world we live in," he said, "when we’re rewarded for killing and hating, and punished for loving."

Eagles Training Camp Preview: Defense
Let’s get it back to the Eagles.
Training camp starts tomorrow at NovaCare and we’ll soon have the opportunity to overreact to every completed pass and dropped ball and bobbled hand-off. But as divorce lawyer Joe Cordell would say, “that’s okay,” because we’re talking about the defending Super Bowl champions here. Of course people are gonna be excited and probably overdo it.
We took a look at the the offense yesterday in part one of our training camp preview.
Today we’re looking at the defense.
Safeties
Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Chris Maragos, Tre Sullivan, Ryan Neal, Jeremy Reaves, Stephen Roberts
Two sure bets in the starting roles and not much behind them. There’s still a chance the Eagles bring back Corey Graham to be the third safety this season, a theory/rumor that picked up a bit of steam yesterday when the Birds waived CB Randall Goforth. Graham got 367 defensive snaps (36%) and 180 special teams snaps (39%) last year, so I think he played a bigger role than most people realize.
At the top, Malcolm Jenkins is coming off his second Pro Bowl in three years. He really is the prototypical strong safety, able to get down in the box and make tackles, match up with slot receivers and tight ends, and do a bit of everything on the defensive side of the ball.
McLeod has been a solid free safety these past two seasons, but I can understand if people want to see more from a guy on a five year, 35 million dollar contract. He’s going to bring a big cap hit next season, so he might he in line for the Mychal Kendricks treatment unless he has a career year in 2018.
The rest of the group is rather raw. Sullivan had some great moments last preseason before winding up on IR and the practice squad. Reaves is interesting as a converted corner and aggressive playmaker coming out of South Alabama. Neal and Roberts are in the same boat, undrafted free agents with a shot at earning that third safety gig behind Jenkins and McLeod.
And of course Chris Maragos is coming off the week six knee injury. I’d think the ace special teamer will only be called on to play safety in the case of a heavily depleted roster.
Questions:
do the Eagles re-sign Corey Graham?
does McLeod step up his game this year?
does one of Sullivan, Neal, Reaves, or Roberts impress during camp?

— EaglesFootball 247 (@PEF247) August 11, 2017
Cornerbacks
Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, Sidney Jones, Rasul Douglas, D.J. Killings, De’Vante Bausby, Avonte Maddox, Chandon Sullivan
The biggest question at corner is probably the biggest question for the entire defense at this point: who plays the slot?
Patrick Robinson really was excellent in that role last season, playing 69% of the snaps as the Eagles operated much more out of their nickel look vs. the 4-3 base defense. You probably remember Robinson wasn’t even named the starting slot corner until very late in last summer’s training camp, and there really were a lot of questions surrounding that decision, which he answered with relative ease.
So I have no clue who replaces him there. Sidney Jones is healthy now, but he was an outside guy in college. Rookie fourth round draft pick Avonte Maddox looks like a candidate for the gig. I really think Jalen Mills would do a good job in the slot. Maybe they just do it by committee and rotate guys in their nickel package based on what the offense gives you. That means you maybe have Jenkins come down on the slot receiver and let Mills and Darby and Jones take the rest of the receivers while going single high safety (think about what Seattle will throw at you with an empty set). I think the whole slot thing is gonna be similar to last year, where the Eagles just take their time and experiment throughout camp.
Otherwise, it’s a solid group. Jones looks like a player. Mills and Darby showed more than enough quality last year, even if they had some iffy moments. Douglas was a guy I watched in college who I think improves in year number two. And Bausby seems like a guy that the Eagles are high on, someone who made plays in the spring and could push the whole unit in camp.
Jim Schwartz said this about Bausby during OTAs:
“He’s a competitive player. He did a really good job for us on the scout teams last year. He was ready to play for us last year if need be. He did a great job not just on the practice field but in the meeting room, being up on the game plan. We were fortunate that we didn’t have so many injuries there that he needed to go. But he was ready, and he had the confidence of the coaching staff. He sort of spread his wings a little bit, working in some different positions. He’s a very, very competitive player. He’s got good size, but his competitiveness stands out. You guys will see that.”
As far as Maddox, the 4th rounder, he had 7 sacks and 8 interceptions last season as a gritty and maybe undersized player for his position. He did play mostly on the outside at Pitt, but on a sequence like this one, I love how he’s able to hold the line, shed a block, and make a play on Saquon Barkley:
Absolutely love Avonte Maddox (slot). My favorite fourth rounder on my board. #NFLDraft #DraftTwitter pic.twitter.com/gCwBUsxL6w
— Bradley Ylitalo (@BradleyYlitalo) April 21, 2018
As for Sullivan, he’s another UDFA coming from a smaller school. A four-year starter at Georgia State, he got combine and Senior Bowl invites and played slot in the spring for the Eagles.
Questions:
who plays the slot?
how does a healthy Sidney Jones fit into the secondary?
Linebackers
Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks, Corey Nelson, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Nate Gerry, Asantay Brown, Joe Walker, LaRoy Reynolds, Kyle Wilson
I’m high on Nigel Bradham, probably more than the rest of the Crossing Broad dudes, but whatever. I thought he was phenomenal last year and really stepped up in a play-relaying/leadership way when Jordan Hicks went down.
Speaking of Hicks, can he stay healthy this year? He’s played just one full season since turning pro.
They need him to remain healthy, because there really aren’t any sure bets behind him. Last season the Eagles were able to roll with Bradham and Mychal Kendricks and play a ton of nickel to limit their usage of Najee Goode and Joe Walker, but the Birds no longer have a reliable option at the second OLB spot.
Paul Worrilow was a candidate, but he tore his ACL in OTAs and went on IR. Corey Nelson looks like he’s gonna be the front-runner to play the weakside, a former 7th round pick who came over from Denver in the spring.
Tune in now as Corey Nelson meets with the media. https://t.co/Zxv2phwdw2
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) March 15, 2018
Gerry and Grugier-Hill are both interesting as important special teamers who converted from safety to linebacker. Same with Brown, the undrafted free agent out of Western Michigan. I’m not sure if any of those three push Nelson out of the spot, but it’s definitely wide open heading into camp.
Walker might have his work cut out for him. He got the nod after Hicks went down last season and never really did anything to stand out or impress. Wilson is a long shot to make the roster and Reynolds is going to be a special teams player who can be a backup at linebacker, similar to what Goode did last season.
Questions:
can Jordan Hicks stay healthy?
who wins the other OLB job?
Defensive tackle
Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Haloti Ngata, Destiny Vaeao, Elijah Qualls, Aziz Shittu, Winston Craig, Bruce Hector
I guess I’d start out by reiterating that the Eagles do move guys around on the d-line. Brandon Graham was actually lined up at tackle inside of Chris Long when he stripped Tom Brady to seal the Super Bowl win.
They’ll show some stuff like that again this season, specifically on third down and likely also with Michael Bennett, who can play the interior in the same way that Graham does.
The biggest question at tackle is replacing Beau Allen, a player who we all sort of described as a “third stringer” behind Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan. But the fact of the matter is that Jernigan only played 70 more snaps than Allen last year, and the split behind Cox was a lot more evenly distributed than I think most people realize. It’s probably more fair to say that Cox was the #1 last year, while Jernigan and Allen were 2a and 2b.
The second biggest question is plugging the gap until Jernigan returns from back surgery. He’s supposed to be out until at least November, so you’re looking at Cox, 34-year-old veteran Haloti Ngata behind him, and then one of Vaeao or Qualls getting legit #3 snaps unless Hector or someone else really impresses in camp.
Eagles’ starting DT Timmy Jernigan underwent surgery on a herniated disc in his back last week and is expected to be out four-to-six months, league sources tell @FieldYates and me.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 3, 2018
We know that Jim Schwartz loves to rotate his line and get fresh bodies in the game, so it’s safe to say that the 4th and 5th DT options are going to get something like 200 and 100 snaps next season, just going by what the Birds did this past year.
Questions:
what does Ngata have left in the tank?
can Vaeao hold down the fort until Jernigan returns?
do the Eagles line up some ends at defensive tackle to address the lack of depth?
Defensive ends
Brandon Graham, Michael Bennett, Chris Long, Derek Barnett, Steven Means, Danny Ezechukwu, Josh Sweat, Joe Ostman
You’ve got a known quantity in Graham, two solid veterans in Long and Bennett, and a sophomore edge rusher in Barnett who should get a much bigger role this season.
Thing with Graham is that he’s coming off ankle surgery and heading into a contract year at age 30. It should be a really intriguing season for him. Bennett, of course, has the legal issue, which I think will probably get tossed out. Long is 33 and will cede some of his snaps to Barnett, who will assume Vinny Curry’s role.
Behind those four, Means has found a way to stick around despite being a healthy scratch on most game days. Sweat is the highly-rated FSU rusher who overcame a horrendous high school injury. He’s got the measurables and the tape and all of that, so he was seen as a bargain as a fourth round selection:
Ostman had 14 sacks and 3 forced fumbles during his final year at Central Michigan. Ezechukwu was a linebacker/d-end hybrid at Purdue and comes in as a UDFA who will have a tough time making the roster.
Questions:
how does Derek Barnett handle a bigger role?
when does Graham get back to 100% health?
do Long and Bennett regress at all as they approach their mid-thirties?
does Sweat make a training camp push?
Time’s yours.

NFL rushing leader Gurley inactive as Rams rest starters
December 31, 2017 (AP)(STL.News) —NFL rushing leader Todd Gurley of the Los Angeles Rams is inactive for Sunday’s home regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
Gurley will finish the regular season with 1,305 yards rushing. Also resting for the playoffs are center John Sullivan, left tackle Andrew Whitworth and defensive tackle Aaron Donald.
The Rams clinched the NFC West title last weekend and first-year coach Sean McVay is opting to rest several of his stars. Quarterback Jared Goff is expected to get the day off but is active as the backup to Sean Mannion, who will make his first career start.
Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart is inactive for the first time this season against Atlanta. Stewart had seen a diminished role the past two weeks. He had only seven carries for 19 yards in last week’s win over Tampa Bay, but was still listed as the Panthers’ starter. Stewart’s exit leaves Christian McCaffrey as the probable starter.
Jacksonville is locked in as the third seed in the AFC, but is sitting only two starters against Tennessee: left tackle Cam Robinson, who left last week’s game with an abdominal strain, and receiver Marqise Lee (ankle).
Derrick Henry is getting the first start of his two-year NFL career with DeMarco Murray scratched for the first time since joining the Titans. Murray is out with an injured right knee.
Denver running back Jamaal Charles will sit out against Kansas City, his former team. Charles was a four-time Pro Bowler with the Chiefs, but never found a groove with the Broncos this season. His past month reads like this: No carries in two games, inactive for two games.
Rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes will start for Kansas City in place of Alex Smith. Inactives for Sunday’s late games:

Green Bay Packers full roster update
As all 32 teams in the NFL are in the midst of selecting their 53-man roster, the Packers have completed the process.
The Packers continued to make roster moves on Sunday as they placed offensive lineman, Don Barclay, on IR to clear the space for linebacker Ahmad Brooks.
*All players in bold made the roster.
*All players in italics have been released.
QB: At quarterback, the team will, of course, have Aaron Rodgers, as well as Brett Hundley. They released both Joe Callahan and Taysom Hill.
RB: For the running back position, Ty Montgomery has been penciled in as the starter. The former wide receiver will be joined on the roster with Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones, Devante Mays. Kalif Phillips was cut.
WR: In a competitive wide receiving core, there were no surprises. Rodgers will have a slew of weapons with Jordy Nelson, Devante Adams, Randall Cobb, Jeff Janis, and Trevor Davis. The talented Geronimo Allison was placed on the reserve/suspended list. DeAngelo Yancey, Michael Clark, Malachi Dupre, Max McCaffrey, Montay Crockett were released. However, Yancey and Clark have been signed to the practice squad.
TE: Martellus Bennett, signed in free agency, will lead a tight end core of three along with Lance Kendricks and Richard Rodgers. Aaron Peck and Emanuel Byrd were cut.
OL: Big questions surround the Packers offensive line with T.J. Lang now a Lion. Starting it will be David Bakhtiari, Bryan Bulaga (depending on his injury), Lane Taylor, Jahri Evans, and Corey Linsley. Also making the team are Jason Spriggs, Kyle Murphy, Lucas Patrick, Justin McCray. The ones released include Thomas Evans, Geoff Gray, Adam Pankey, Kofi Amichia, Robert Leff.
DL: Calvin Heurtelou, Izaah Lunsford, and Brian Price did not make the roster. While Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Ricky Jean Francois, Christian Ringo, Montravius Adams can celebrate.
LB: Ahmad Brooks was signed this week after being cut by San Francisco, he will join a shaky group made up of Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Jayrone Elliott, Kyler Fackrell, Jake Ryan, Blake Martinez, Joe Thomas.
CB: Davon House, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, Kevin King, Josh Hawkins, LaDarius Gunter, Lenzy Pipkins were the corners to make the roster. This will be the group to keep an eye on after being the biggest black eye a season ago. Daquan Holmes fell short of the 53-man team.
S: Safety should be a strong area for the Packers this year. With a core of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Morgan Burnett, Josh Jones, Kentrell Brice, Marwin Evans. Two were cut: Aaron Taylor and Jermaine Whitehead.
ST: Mason Crosby, Justin Vogel, Brett Goode will make up the team.

What to do at wide receiver?
The Green Bay Packers are facing quite a decision when it comes to the final roster and their plethora of wide receivers. Complicating the situation is the fact that two of the players competing for roster spots are also being counted on as key players on special teams. I can see seven receivers being kept again this year as the Packers can ill afford to be caught short of weapons on what could be a Super Bowl caliber team.
The top three of Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams and Randall Cobb appear to be locks, only Cobb might possibly be in trouble due to his high salary and limited production the last two years. And not only that, last year Jordy played a lot from the slot, which is Cobb’s primary position. I don’t think they will cut him but it wouldn’t be a total shock to see him traded.
The general consensus is Geronimo Allison has had an excellent camp and even with a one game suspension, he will be the fourth. After that things get really interesting. The people’s champ, Jeff Janis is a special teams ace but can’t really be counted on to player wide receiver. Same for Trevor Davis, the second-year man out of Cal who was supposed to add speed to the group but was a non-factor last year. Davis, however, is being groomed as the number one punt returner. A couple of muffs lately might cost him that job and if it does, his roster spot might go with it.
Then there is Max McCaffrey, who has had a solid camp and has produced in the games as well. He’s smart, and catches everything thrown his way. He looks like the most polished receiver amongst those fighting for the last few spots. Then there is Michael Clark, the rookie out of Marshall who has turned heads in camp, as well as DeAngelo Yancey, Malachi Dupre and Montay Crockett still on the roster.
If Davis and Janis make the team for their special teams contributions, that would be six, but with only four that can really play receiver. The key will definitely be Davis, if he is the punt returner then they have to keep seven. I think the seventh should be McCaffery. I think I would keep McCaffrey even if they decide to part ways with Davis and only keep six. I think Clark is definitely in the mix for a roster spot, the rest are likely practice squad material, especially Yancey and Dupre, who were draft picks this year. Online betting enthusiasts will be keeping tabs on these players, as their inclusion or exclusion could change team dynamics.
Maybe the Packers can trade one and get something in return, because they no doubt will be losing some good young talent if they can’t get them to the practice squad. Going to be fun to watch.

Geronimo Allison of Inexperienced Bay Packers suspended a person recreation
Inexperienced BAY, Wis. — Geronimo Allison, the Inexperienced Bay Packers‘ 2nd-12 months receiver who made a astonishing contribution as a rookie, was suspended for the to start with recreation of the typical year for violating the NFL’s compound abuse policy, the league declared Wednesday.

Allison pleaded no contest in April, when he compensated a $330.50 great to lower the demand from a misdemeanor to an ordinance violation, according to Wisconsin circuit court docket data. He will be suspended devoid of fork out, indicating he would drop a person check — or $31,764. His $540,000 salary is not guaranteed, so he would only be compensated for game titles in which he’s on the 53-male roster.
Allison will not rely on the roster all through his a person-week suspension. He will be allowed to practice all through teaching camp and engage in in preseason game titles.
Allison grew to become an significant participant for the Packers midway by past year following accidents strike their receiving corps. The undrafted rookie out of Illinois was promoted from the practice squad on Oct. 24, and considerably less than a week later caught his to start with NFL landing pass versus the Atlanta Falcons. He finished with seventeen catches for 267 yards and two touchdowns in thirteen game titles, which includes playoffs.
The Packers drafted a pair of receivers — Purdue’s DeAngelo Yancey (fifth spherical) and LSU’s Malachi Dupre (seventh) — and kept seven at the placement on the roster to open up past year. Allison put in most of the offseason techniques as the No. 4 receiver at the rear of Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams and Randall Cobb.
