Nekrotronic, 2018 I enjoyed this Australian film about necromancer demon-hunters. It had some good A-Team and Hellboy vibes. Good cast, solid fun. Recommend!!

This is the behind the scenes makeup and prosthetics for a 2018 Australian comedy/horror called NEKROTRONIC, the amount of work and detail that went into creating the creatures for the film was amazing. It was also interesting to see the creation of a full body prosthetic.

Nekrotronic (2018)
Genre: Horror/Comedy/Sci-Fi
Who’s In It: Ben O’Toole, Monica Bellucci, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich, David Wenham, Epine Bob Savea
Who Directed It: Kiah Roache Turner
Plot:  A man who discovers that he is part of a secret sect of magical beings who hunt down and destroy demons in the internet.
Running Time: 1 Hour 39 Minutes
IMDB Score: 5.4
Why I Watched It: The cast and did hear some buzz off of Twitter, always good to follow people who like the same genre and kind of films you do.
How I Watched: Shudder Canada
Random Thoughts: This one flew under my radar, did see it get added to Shudder but I hadn’t heard of it and it looked odd but in a good way and so I had heard some people on Twitter saying they liked it so I gave it a go.  The one thing about all these streaming services is you have a good chance of checking everything if you know where to look.  Also I should add this is an Australian film.
What I Liked: This is one of those films that is hard not only to describe but also say what it is, it’s mostly three genres just thrown together but I do think they’re mostly going for a Cult vibe and they hit it no doubt.  Nekrotronic is one of those films where you’re either on board or you turn it off after 15 minutes.  I think it mostly worked and one of the main reasons is the cast, this is a very tricky movie to pull off and the cast are so game and also so likable they pull it off for the most part.
The tone of the film is mostly light, well if not light cause the subject matter isn’t but they go for a black comedy vibe and even some of the gross action stuff is going more for laughs than horror.  I liked that the main idea is demons are real and the evil master mind has basically corrupted the internet and they have a demon version of a Pokemon game.  That part was clever and it worked.  Now let’s not get into the plot cause it’s way out there and I will say Monica Bellucci gets to camp it up she’s over the top and around the corner but still sexy that women just oozes style and sexiness even in this very weird role.
Cast wise I really liked Caroline Ford and Tess Haubrich, they almost steal the movie to the point they should have been the leads.  David Wenham was good to but he’s barely in it.  Ben O’Toole is fine, he’s charming but I wasn’t a fan of his character but O’Toole at least makes him human and mostly likable.
The action goes for it and I will say the film on the whole is bonkers in a very good way and is a bunch of fun.
What I Didn’t Like: They might have tried too hard to be quirky and a Cult film, I’ve written this before you can’t make a cult movie, it becomes one with the public if that makes sense.  It played a little too self aware for my liking.
The only major thing I had with the film is the lead character is that boring old troupe “The chose one” yet he doesn’t know it, yup like Harry Potter.  The problem here is they didn’t need that character we have Wenham, Haubrich and Ford as this demon hunting family and they work so well and are so much fun, and very bad ass the film loses it’s speed once Wenham leaves and we have O’Toole lead, and the fact that he doesn’t and really the character brings nothing, he makes the film less bad ass and more comedy and I think it hurt the film.
The pacing is also too loose for this type of film, they easily good have lost 8-10 minutes and made it leaner and tighter.  Also wish they kind of went more over the top effect wise.
Final Thoughts: I liked it, it was flawed but I had fun with it.
Rating: 7, this is more a 6.5 but I liked it enough to push it to 7.  It’s a must watch for genre fans who like their genre weird.

Australians in Film is pleased to announce the finalists of its 10th anniversary Heath Ledger Scholarship.
The finalists are: Aaron Glenane (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Danger Close), Bethany Whitmore (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Girl Asleep), Charmaine Bingwa (Little Sista, upcoming Nekrotronic) Kipan Rothbury (Significant Strangers), Brenna Harding (Puberty Blues, Black Mirror), Ezekiel Simat (High Life, upcoming Lambs of Gods), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Doctor Doctor, Thor: Ragnarok), Nicholas Denton (Glitch), Harvey Zielinski (Starting from...Now) and Gemma Bird Matheson (Neighbours).
"2018 saw a record number of applicants, and the judges agreed the standard was extremely high. Narrowing it down to just 10 was tricky, but following great deliberation and vigorous discussion, we have shortlisted an incredible lineup of Australian actors who reflect the amazing and diverse talent we have here in Australia," said Kirsty McGregor, President of the Casting Guild of Australia and HLS10 Judge.
The finalists were announced live via Instagram by Australian actor and 2018 HLS Ambassador Eka Darville (Jessica Jones, Empire). The recipient will be announced on Thursday, September 20 at the iconic Chateau Marmont
